Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 551:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10)

Well, ♥♥♥♥. I seem to be saying this a lot, but [i]Choice of Robots[/i] ("CoR") really is That Girl™️. It seems to be the only "mainstream" Interactive Fiction game so far, with an Overwhelmingly Positive 1,894 reviews. I can see why. In IF, there's a broad spectrum of stories. On one end are the novels, where there aren't a lot of inner mechanics, and the appeal is the writing. On the other spectrum are games. Or, I suppose, a gamebook? Where the writing and plot is more secondary to the underlying mechanics and player freedom. While respecting both, [i]Choice of Robots[/i] is clearly on the latter end of the spectrum. It's all about branching, choice reactivity, and mechanics. That's not to say it doesn't have good writing—Kevin Gold's prose is simple yet beautiful—but there are glossed over plot points and little character development. I usually champion story above all else, yet [i]Choice of Robots[/i] made me concede a rare point—the medium itself can be the message. Because CoR is a game obsessed with reactivity: choices echo forward, paths fracture and recombine, and the consequences of your decisions are structural rather than cosmetic. Long after the details blur, what lingers is the shape of the world I made—and the uncomfortable clarity that no one else made it for me.

[b][h2]Pros:[/h2][/b]
✅ [b]Branching and reactivity.[/b] CoR is obsessed with reactivity in a way few IFs ever manage. This isn’t a game where choices slightly tweak flavor text or relationships. Chapter 6 has four different climaxes, depending on your story! Paths fracture, rejoin, and diverge again based on early, sometimes seemingly innocuous choices—what dream you picked first, who is funding you, did you give your robot a gun for an arm. I cannot stress enough how [i]everything[/i] matters.

✅[b] Complex moral quandaries.[/b] CoR doesn't do anything new. (I'm thinking of [i]Detroit: Become Human[/i] already playing with human/AI ethics). But what it does is give you is a cute, fun story that quickly accelerates into an emotionally intense and genuine series of dilemmas. I wanted to be a brilliant yet charitable inventor. No violence, I vowed, and no military operations. And yet, when I found myself having to choose between my morals and the need to keep funding my robot, I caved. I'm sorry, I did! While I secretly made my robots more graceful and empathetic, the U.S. Army used my robots only as a support or defence unit. This was fine, I told myself. Every soldier needs a good medic. And my robots are smart, too. I grew extremely wealthy. So my morals weren't actually compromised, right? Except, even small actions—like choosing how your robot handles a minor dispute—can snowball into questions about slavery, war, and the ethics of consciousness. “Doing no harm” is a luxury you can’t always afford.

✅[b] Mechanics and stat systems.[/b] Unlike most IF, Gold strips personality down to the bone. There’s no slider for “sarcastic” or “kind,” no physical descriptions to pin your character to. You’re reduced to a name, a gender, an age, a year—and four blunt measures of success: Humanity, Fame, Wealth, and Romance. It’s almost unsettling how little the game thinks it needs to know about you. And yet, it works. Humanity tends to fall as Fame and Wealth rise, not because the game is cynical, but because it understands tradeoffs. Becoming visible, powerful, and comfortable often means becoming compromised. You’re not “evil," right? You’re just busy, distracted, or insulated.

➡️ [b]The robot, ironically, is where the real complexity lives. [/b]With only four stats—Autonomy, Military, Empathy, and Grace—it feels simpler than a human at first, until you realize how tightly wound those traits are. Empathy makes the robot gentler, more perceptive, but it actively weakens its Military effectiveness. Push it toward strength and obedience, and you sand down its softness. Every improvement is also a subtraction. And everything feels super personal, like I'm raising my own child! When the robot responds coldly, or fails to understand why humans are suffering, it’s hard not to recognize your own fingerprints on it. What did you optimize? What did you decide wasn't worth protecting?

✅[b] Prose.[/b] Honestly, Gold's language is competent, but not "literary" or beautiful. It's quite matter-of-fact, almost history-like as it narrates events in your life. But it's rather charming in its simplicity.

✅ [b]Unique ROs.[/b] I was impressed with the ROs. They are not tropes or even conventional attractive. Each one has their own flaw. My chosen RO, E, was staunchly anti-military and expressed disapproval that I sold my bots to the military. So much so, in fact, that I got broken up with! The fact that a side character had this much agency delighted me. Josh, another RO, is uh. Not a romantic guy and not exactly a traditional, steady romance. [spoiler]You can get with your stalker, so that's fun as hell![/spoiler] Another RO I found is Juliet who works for the military—which opens up a whole can of worms! These aren’t “dateable cardboard cutouts” at all. Push against their morals too much, and they'll be angry enough to dump you. But somehow balancing your relationship and ambition is satisfying, with just enough tension and consequence that it never feels predictable.

[b][h2]Cons:[/h2][/b]
🟥 [b]Glossed over milestones.[/b] This is the biggest con. Because the game spans such a large period of your life, there's always going to be moments skipped over. For example, my biggest issues were when [spoiler]I got imprisoned, got pardoned by the President, got married to my RO, and had a child.[/spoiler] These events followed Gold's vignette style—but suffered as a consequence. While that approach works beautifully for passing years and gradual shifts, it undersells events that should feel life-altering. And none of these moments are badly written, mind you, they’re just over too quickly. I got maybe two pages of exposition and companion reactions, when the significance of the moment demanded way, way more.

🟥 [b]Similarly, your ROs don't ... seem to change much.[/b] While their reactions to your choices can be sharp and immediate, their personalities and core beliefs remain largely static. Even after years of story progression or major plot events, they often respond in the same way they did at the start. E will always be liberal. Josh will always be a capitalist. You and the robot change so much, while the side cast pales in comparison.

🟥[b] Quite a bit of pop culture references.[/b] The age is dating CoR a bit. There were quite a lot of references to past and current (at the time) events. I didn't mind the books or literature, but I was never a big song or movie person. A lot of the references came off as cheesy to me.

First played this almost ten years ago, and I replayed it recently and was amazed at how much I still remembered. It may have subconsciously influenced me because I became a programmer lol. I saw another review describe this as "choice-dense" and that's a great word; the story actually branches out a lot and you can see many different story lines whereas other choose-your-own-adventures stories fall into the trap of giving you choices but having the story still basically play out the same way.
My favorite route is conquering Alaska lol.

I don't really do reviews, but after this game helped me through some hard times by feeling in control in 2017, coming back to the game now feels even more fulfilling. Many paths that I haven't even imagined to get to yet are still a mystery, like rescuing a president is crazy. Put on some music, have some drinks of your choice, and let the story take you. Every choice feels like it has an impact, either professional, military, cooperate, social, or just a bad choice like where I died early on thinking it cant really be a bomb. Check the game out even if its already past a decade (WHAT DO YOU MEAN 2014), its truly an adventure that can have many outcomes (like a cult, I want to start the cult, how!?!?!) Don't actually tell me how, I want to figure out how to be a robot nut job.

Personally, it's just alright. The story covering a lifetime means that there will be occasional years-long time skips, and that makes it hard to ground myself and see the effects of my choices.
I really loved the beginning, when it was more easygoing and it felt like choices had more obvious impact. Going into the war then post-war, it was harder to see if my choices meant anything -- especially with years passing by so quick. Though I can't be too sure, it didn't feel like these latter parts were as fleshed out. It's understandable as, from what I've seen, there's different routes and it'd simple be too much work to expand them all while accounting for past choices.
Regardless, I wish the story dealt more with personal matters, and had more emphasis on the romance and time with the robot companions. It's not bad by any means -- merely not what I wanted.

Я люблю роботів і все, що з ними пов’язане, тому не міг пройти повз цієї інтерактивної новели. Тим більше що відгуки були дуже добрі.

Але мене чекало розчарування. Звісно, кількість варіацій пригоди, яка залежить від рішень гравця, вражає. Проте якість цієї пригоди - не дуже. У першу чергу ти нікому не співпереживаєш. Події швидко пролітають повз, вплив твоїх рішень на розвиток подій може розчаровувати, та й сама подача тексту виглядає так, ніби його написала людина без великого життєвого досвіду. Якби я читав це у 25 років, то не звернув би уваги, а в 40+, та ще й живучи у воюючій країні, дивишся трохи скептично на деякі переживання персонажів у новелі.

Загалом ця пригода може бути веселою, якщо нічого від неї не очікувати, а просто швиденько прокрутити декілька кампаній, щоб побачити абсолютно різні розвитку подій. Але глибини в ній немає.

Choice of Robots is probably the best work in the Choice of Games collection. It is well-written, imaginative, and fun (though perhaps less novel/futuristic now than when it was first released). Plus, the plot actually branches in interesting ways.

While out of scope for a Choice of Games work, I imagine the game would be improved with music and imagery (e.g., as in The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante).

这部写作水平真的很差，文笔很幼稚，也没什么情节可言，就是很机械的“叙述+选择+结果”的流水线，不停循环。小事件之间没有过渡。作为科幻来说甚至完全没有创新性和想象力，读这个的这时间不如去读点pkd或者oe巴特勒。说是可以泡机器人但这个机器人根本没有角色性格可言（其实出场的绝大部分角色都没有清晰且完整的性格）。
之前看评价说反派是中国+科幻题材+十年前的作品，我本来以为能吃一口《黑客军团（mr robot）》的代餐，然而不是随随便便一个人都能达到sam esmail的写作水平。作者写东西像一个反智的民粹主义者，搜了下没想到现在居然还在波士顿大学教书。

I really wanted to love this one, but it just fell too short for me. I didn't have any issues with the prose or writing as a whole, but mostly with the story, I think.

The game promises a robot-centric story with vast decisions and your choices mattering to the overall story outcome. Realistically, it starts out supremely strong and then quickly shoehorns you into a strange military story line that seems to have more to do with government uprisings and war between China and the U.S. You and your robot just happen to end up stuck in the middle of it, even if you took several steps to not be involved at all. Somehow I was thrown in prison for China stealing the schematics for my robot? Interesting. Also China is using my robot who is not built for military purposes whatsoever for, you guessed it, military purposes.

Maybe I played wrong or made bad choices, but the story felt extremely rushed after the first quarter. Half the time I was bemoaning how the outcome of my choices didn't make much narrative sense but that I couldn't go back and change it without restarting the whole story. The game also doesn't read like a fully cohesive story. It just tosses a scenario at you, you make your choice, you get slapped with the outcome, and then there's this disjointed timeskip or lack of storytelling/narrative bridge connecting it and the next scenario placed in front of you.

The romances are also pretty dry. If you came into this game looking for an in depth or interesting romance with the robot at the end, it was just...okay. Not bad but alright. None of the other characters particularly stood out to me. One of the humans seemed to actively get upset with me for getting with the robot instead of them even though I never chose any dialogue expressing interest in them.

This review is a bit discombobulated, just like the game kinda felt. I wouldn't tell you not to buy it. It's fine, it killed about an hour for one playthrough, and it's not expensive. I'd give it a try if the premise interests you and I don't personally regret playing it. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

Great game, very entertaining! Got it when looking for games similar to "The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante". The title doesn't lie, there's loads of choices in Choice of Robots. So far I have died in a failed rebellion against China and died at the hand of my beloved creation. However, choice doesn't equal getting exactly what you've chosen, as per the opening quote: "Some things are in our control and others not". Just a friendly warning.

There's only one sticking point - lack of saving or even simple "undo the last choice". My third playthrough got wrecked by a misclick. Not great, but not damning.

Also: love the writing!

I've finished the game twice, it's an enjoyable story with interesting characters and the choices really have a HUGE impact on the story, which is a nice change from a lot of games that give you choices that just amount to repainting the same outcome. app上玩的，多周目体验非常好，剧情差分非常大，每次我觉得我差不多玩完了，一看成就居然还有很多我从没见过的分支。
游戏内2025年的神展开快要把我笑死，谁能想到14年的小说预言准了这么多呢？
文笔通俗易懂，就是剧情进展比较快，类比下像是大纲流网文。

每个RO都是，突然冒出来然后问你对ta有没有感觉，要不要出去约会。。。你谁啊根本不认识也不想理你。一周目拒绝了所有人，和我的小机器人一起呆着。
感情线很健全。[spoiler]没有cheat或者修罗场，如果你先date了A，又去date B，那么和B在一起后MC会立刻给A打电话断了。[/spoiler]
和机器人的罗曼也很健全。[spoiler]自己养大的小机器人不能date，就是自己的孩子。如果后续开发了陪伴型机器人，可以和这个bot 约会，但恋爱bot出现的特别晚[/spoiler]，塑造也非常少。没有感觉。

I genuinely became attached to the robots I created in this game. The storyline is awesome, and you can really take any path in life based off the multiple choices you're given page-to-page. I want to replay it again already, and I just finished a playthrough. Whether you're creating your robots for war, medicine, or pure sentience, this is a great game.

I found the timescale of many events to be very absurd. Some of the writing, in general, seemed...immature in a sense, but writing a branching story in a realistic way that makes everyone happy and is easy to understand is a huge challenge. Overall, after one playthrough, I found it very enjoyable and would absolutely recommend it for fans of choose-your-own-adventures.

The only regret I have after reading this novel is not having read it before. Once you start, you cannot stop until you have finished it. This novel makes you think about everything, including your own philosophy, moral and ethics. It guides you through a carrousel of emotions and makes you want to keep reading more and more.

Way better than expected, a truly masterpiece that can be read multiple times thanks to the variety of stories you can get depending on your actions. 10/10 I would recommend it to anyone who likes sci-fi novels which makes you think and feel emotions and not only tells you a nice story.

When I first saw the description on the store page, I was interested in the theme, but I thought it would either be too dense to hold my interest to the end, or the pacing would frustrate me, like I have found happens with visual novels.

I was delightfully wrong on both counts. I have had the game for two days, and I've finished the story something like ten times, because I keep restarting to see what could go differently. Infrequently, I will have an unsatisfying conclusion to a storyline, but most of the time I'm touched and thrilled by the outcome of my choices. If the theme sounds at all interesting, I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

This is the ONLY way I will even interact with EBOOKS!

This game is seriously such a unique and thrilling exploration of the self, human society, and various philosophies all while coming in the form of an interactive game.

I'm a big fan of dating sims, specifically visual novels, and this one is by far my favorite of all the free and paid-for dating simulations.

It has the perfect balance of FREE CHOICE and PROVIDED NARRATIVE! I didn't feel like I was continuously reading and not making choices, and my wrist didn't hurt having to make a choice between dialogue that's more two flavors of the same response and not notable differing reactions.

Also, I love how this game kinda condenses a lot of humanity's perspectives on the whole A.I. thing into a huge piece of interactive media. Like, yes, please actual books, but really, this game would be a great way for younger teens to learn a lot about the world through this game; not to mention what they could learn about themselves!

Also Also, I liked how this game really utilized it's multiple-ending mechanic to include futures like the robots taking over, or living peacefully alongside us as lovers or tools. It just felt like I could really make the choices I WANTED to make.

Such a great game, can't wait to get my hands on their other work!

I only completed one play through, but during that story certain parts felt very stiff. I'm not sure how to explain it without saying what exactly happened to me, so SPOILERS AHEAD.

I saw a lady stalking me and she ran away. I found out her name is Tammy. I open a factory and Tammy applies to work there. I interview Tammy and find out she used to work with confidential info for the government. I think shes worth hiring. I call Tammy to tell her the good news. Tammy says I love you after hearing that she got hired. I say I love you back because this is literally my second conversation with this lady and that could only mean its a platonic love. Instead, Tammy and I are now dating. Years pass and Tammy and I get married. The U.S.and China are at war and the U.S. wants my robots. I agree, but only if my robots aren't combatants. Tammy says that she can't work with me anymore since I decided to take this government contract. She can't trust the government to follow their contracts. Our marriage is given zero consideration in this decision, so I say please stay because i like working with you. Tammy gets angry at me and quits. Immediately after I found out my robots are striking because of the gov't contract, so I cancel it. The game says that Tammy has already moved on so its too late to rehire her. We are literally married. How is anything too late?! For the rest of my story Tammy is brought up 3 more times. Once because she wants my help to break people out of prison. I thought that we must be separated based on how it was too late to get Tammy back, so say no because she couldn't compromise for me so i wont for her. The second time is when i make a romance bot. This is when i realize I'm still married to Tammy because she's jealous of the romance bot. I decide to end it there and get together with my romance bot. The last time I hear of Tammy she attacked my romance bot with some thugs and died when the robot defended itself. All of the story points involving Tammy that I reached that didn't stem from our romance seemed to disregard our marriage completely.

If you're new to Choose Your Own Adventure / Interactive Fiction / Choice of Games, I would suggest starting here, like I am. It's funny, easy to get into, and it has a super wide range of choices and outcomes, but you can finish a playthrough in a single session if you have a few hours.

It's okay. Plenty of the writing is captivating, but as time goes on, it seems to become less convincing. There are multiple instances of shoehorning jokes in or using strange descriptors that totally disrupt the flow of reading. The plot isn't particularly inspired, and characters feel flat, maybe with the exception of the robot companion. Overall, the writing feels immature, a bit cliché, and, at times, inconsistent.

That said, it will keep your interest for a while. What makes the game most interesting is that it will likely be a different story for every player. You can be a warmonger, a robot-lover, a successful venture capitalist... Choices indeed matter, and will likely lead to all sorts of outcomes I didn't experience. It could be that I picked a more plain path to take, but frankly, I'm not too interested in trying to find alternate outcomes. Options are numerous and varied, but you'll be exploring them led by incredulous narration and boring characters.

MAAAAAAN, I was expecting something along the lines of "Robot wife novel" sort of experience, which I did get in an ending.
But damn, the writing is pretty decent and may have teared up at some of the topics near the end.
I recommend grabbing this if you want something to read, and also like machines/robot stories.

I have only played one story part of Choice of Robot, this game is expansive with the choices and story that it is crazy how much effort is put into it. It is pick you own adventure game where you create a robot and can do whatever you want with it. From making it a doctor or a death machine it got you covered. It is short but I recommend you pick this up.

I wasn't expecting much from a Choose Your Own Adventure. Choice of Games tends to be cheesy as hell and a bit tropey, in a way that I think will date it in years to come, but I enjoyed a couple playthroughs of this. It's a very reactive choice system, definitely worth getting on sale.

Choice of Robots is one of the best CYOA games I have played, and easily the best title Choice of Games has put out. I will admit that there's some bias because robots are a topic I have great interest in, but what makes Choice of Robots stand out is the multitude of branching paths offered, especially compared to other Choice of Games titles.

Most CYOA titles have poor replayability, with the second playthrough demonstrating that many of your choices didn't matter and you were railroaded to your ending. In contrast, Choice of Robots offers four main diverging endgame paths, with very little railroading: in every mandatory story section, you can decline or opt out of something asked of you (you're never forced to say 'yes'). After getting my honest ending (making the choices I felt I would earnestly make), I went back and played through at least 10 more times to experience the other routes the game had to offer, and I didn't get bored until I was grabbing the last few achievements.

If you like robots in scifi, get this game.

These games, and this one in particular, outclasses any of the movie-"game" slop like Last of Us 2 or God of War Ragnarok that's been coming out recently.

Funny how bare text and one developer can achieve more for the interactive medium and games themselves as art versus thousands of people working in graphics, motion-capture, voice-acting just to make a movie that you need to press X to advance through.

This stands as one of my best "Choice of" games, or any other choose your own adventure style games. In many such games, the choices are largely cosmetic, leading down a generally same plot path. For example, one could put points into skill A rather than B, and in another play through the reverse, and you'd end up with largely the same story, just with some changes in how events unfolded. Nothing truly wrong with that if the story is well written, but the illusion of choice is broken once you reach the second or third playthroughs.

Not so with Choice of Robots. Here, small changes and conscious choices lead your character's story and the world state down wildly divergent paths. This makes the game truly an RPG, with many new things to explore even after several play through (as of this this writing, I've completed about 10 already).

There are a couple of other small things that I appreciate. First is how you can select what kind of dream your character has. These dreams set the stage and mood for the game world in that playthrough, whether it's one of a robot utopia, apocalyptic warscapes, or a love story. It doesn't set your path in stone, but it's nice that you can set up what kind of story you wish to read today.

Second is how the story wraps itself up nicely at the end. There have been some good choose your own adventure stories that I've read before, but some of them end on a cliffhanger, awaiting a sequel that that may never come. This leaves a slight feeling of dissatisfaction for me because I want to know the outcome of my choices in the story, an outcome that (1) I likely won't ever get to read, or (2) having played the first part a few times, forget what character I'm actually playing when moving on to the next part. It's nice that in Choice of Robots, each playthrough is self-contained and concludes itesilf well, lending itself to multiple satisfying playthoughs.

In conclusion, highly recommended!

Replayed this game numerous times now and would never have thought I would extract so much enjoyment from a text-only game. So, I picked up this game a long time ago and have only just recently decided to play it. I spent two hours building up the main character to be just the way I wanted him to be. I roleplayed as him, making sub-optimal decisions for the sake of the story I wanted to have told. And then, at the two hour mark, the game goes and forces my character down a very specific path that was antithetical to my vision for the character. In any other game, I wouldn't have minded so much, but I got really invested in my character.

Choice of Robots is an exquisite choose your own adventure style text game. There are no graphics other than your imagination. There is no sound, other than whatever you choose to listen to while you play it. And yet, it is one of my favorite games on Steam of all time. I've sunk over 80 hours exploring the numerous iterations of the storyline and I still occasionally come across whole blocks of text that I've never seen before. I highly recommend Choice of Robots to anyone who enjoys a good story, especially those with interests in Sci Fi.

Also, on a side note, I've noticed a lot of discussions elsewhere stating that Choice of Robots (and Kevin Gold's other 2 choose your own adventure games) is the only good Choice of Games game.
