Fantastic shmup with really helpful tutorials to guide you on how to play properly without handholding. Players of different skill levels can set different goals so it's both ideal for genre beginners and high skill ceiling for veterans. Great scoring system that incentivizes aggressive but thoughtful play. Amazing replayability with 3 playable characters all with different special weapons. Stellar audio and visual design. Short campaign so can be played in short bursts.
Really fun atmosphere, all the mechanics are interwoven really elegantly and it's a great game to try to clear.
It's impossible to play this game with too many bullets
Despite the presentation being more or less top notch I would not recommend this game. It is simply not fun to play, every time I give it a go it feels like it was balanced to be far too difficult. None of the patterns past stage 2 are fun to dodge, and no matter how much I try I just can't get into it. It feels like it was made solely for veteran shmup fans, and for someone who's only casually into the genre it's just not fun. Sorry.

One of the best if not the best indie shmup on Steam. Extremely well-designed in every area.
Normal mode is easy mode, if you are not new go for Hyper, it's where the game's scoring and rank system shine and you can really see the genius interplay between everything.
Also, the variety of different shot types and weapons and how viable in different ways and how they tie into scoring/survival routing in unique ways is something I've never seen pulled off this well.
It has top in class visibility settings too. Honestly this is pretty much a perfect game, the only thing you may possibly fault is some of the art style, but that is up to individual taste.
BLUE REVOLVER is a good game and hard one at that. Works on Windows, Mac and Linux in my case so that kind of flexibility is great and handy.

Just a great game. Would've been nice if you wouldn't be able to cheese the game so easily by pause buffering (spaming the pause button in difficult parts). Also in my opinion some special weapons kinda break the game because you can just speed kill yourself through difficult sections of the game. Other than that a great game with an awesome soundtrack
Absolute gem of a game, feels good, looks good, sounds good. Playing for score is highly encouraged, and turtling gets you nowhere. Also a great entry point to the genre with normal mode.

A small shmup that packs a whole lot of content, replayability, and fun in it! Please give it a shot, it feels so hard but so fair, even if I get my butt kicked. The characters are cute, the story is light but sets a fun little world to play in, the art is beautiful, the music RIPS, and all in all it's a very fun little time.
I am not very good at SHMUPS nor have I beaten this game after 30 hours, but I just keep coming back to it. Just a fun experience. The soundtrack is amazing. The graphics and 120hz mode are kino. The three ships are unique from each other. I have beaten this on free mode, but that doesnt count. I'm having fun trying to beat this on normal. That last stage is tough but it atleast has the best music track lol.
Nearly perfect modern arcade game and a great way to get into the genre. One of those games that you'll always be able to come back to for just one more quick run (but it's never just one is it?).
There's a lot of content between working up the difficulty using practice mode, learning characters + loadouts, and XP-Mode with its silly experimental weapons like my favorite bouncing kinetic orb. The scoring rank and flourish system is it's own game and you can easily compare your routes with replays off the leaderboard. Excellent.

Extremely polished and challenging shoot em up that pushes you to your limits with plenty of fun mechanics to spice up your gameplay. I really like how the boss enemies and mini bosses have these smaller breakable parts for more score. They're like hectic tiny puzzle during your run. The variety in ship types and weapons is really great and you can play in the way most suitable for your playstyle.
The legibility options in here are a gold standard as you can customize the visuals saturation, brightness and color very extensively making the bullet visibility as good as you need it.
The music is amazing and I often find myself syncing my movements to the blood pumping beats and it actually helps me to lock in.
But most importantly the game is so much fun and every failure feels like carving a path towards victory.

Incredible shmup. I've cleared the game on Hyper difficulty without continues after about 17 hours of gameplay, so I like to think my two cents hold a bit of weight:
Game is very accessible thanks to settings such as "transparent player bullets" so you can focus on enemy fire, or you can also change the colours of enemy bullets if you have visibility problems. There's also a normal mode with autobombs, so people newer to the genre can give it a try too.
The scoring is very fun and allows for intricate, yet also surprisingly intuitive routing. Some other review said "it's DoDonPachi" which is pretty far from the truth. The chaining and usage of the flourish mechanic set Blue Revolver and DoDonPachi very far apart, and the same can be said for how resources work in this game. Even if you clip a bullet, if you have space for it in your "inventory", you get bombs back for scoring. As such, running into a bullet is a viable strategy sometimes. You'd never see that in DoDonPachi. Though, I will say that Mae's ship looks very similar to the one in DoDonPachi and her having a laser (if you decide so!) is pretty funny, but I see it as more of a "nod" than anything else. Blue Revolver has plenty of its own DNA, in fact it oozes of it.
The music is powerful and contributes to this game being an utter hype machine from the very start, but still building up that hype and the nerves as the run progresses. Even just a normal survival run gets very addicting that way.
I genuinely can't think of anything bad about this game, honestly. Worth full price, and if it's on sale and you love shmups, especially danmaku, this is a must try.

It's DoDonPachi. With all of its pros (there aren't that many) and cons. And if there's a series in the genre that has historically had some of the most questionable game design choices - it's (Do)DonPachi. Unfortunatelly, Blue Revolver follows in its footsteps and does the exact same mistake I hate DoDonPachi for with a passion: the colors of every single object are somewhat muted and blend in together to the point it's really hard to track the bullets (or see anything distinctly for that matter). It's the case of artstyle over substance that, in my opinion, should not be present in year 2025. On top of that, Blue Revolver, just like DDP, heavily leans into 'pure memorization' territory instead of reaction based gameplay, making your first playthroughs quite miserable and not fun.
That said, the OST is absolutely leagues ahead of its source materal and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was the sole reason I had the game on my wishlist and I was not disappointed to receive it as a gift. The visuals are also nice and pleasant to look at, but the colors don't do the artstyle any justice. What a shame.
My advice to casual players like me: buy the OST - ignore the game. There are way better shmups with a much smoother difficulty curve that don't force you to strain your eyes to see things, be it Radiant Silvergun, The Touhou Series, Mushihimesama or any other non-memorization based shmup for that matter. You're not going to enjoy this unless you're a hardcore CAVE fan which I'm not.

This my favorite SHMUP. There are many SHMUPs, but this one is for me.
Blue Revolver has a beautiful visual presentation with bright art style and detailed yet clean sprite work, great soundtrack (both original and DA remix). Three playable ships with different styles of shots and additionally multiple special weapons for each ship, enabling multiple play styles. Unlocks like screen filters and palettes, ship recolors, alternative music tracks. Many customization options.
But what really sold me on this game and got me hooked for dozens of hours is the scoring system. Basically, with regular shots you build a multiplier up, and then you can use special shots to "cash out" so to speak, making enemies killed by special weapons drop "coins" amount of which is dependent on your multiplier, and greatly increase your score. And certain special weapons may force you to adjust your playstyle to "cash out" and maximize your score. However you have a limited supply of special weapon ammo. And ammo sometimes drops from enemies, and also bomb kills always reward you special ammo. Certain score milestones give you tangible bonuses, for example reaching 5,000,000 gives you an extra life, which will certainly help you until you master the game enough to 1CC it (I'm still working on it). It's a very engaging scoring system that motivates you to be strategic, git gud and eventually compete for high scores. And a lot of challenge missions also utilize this scoring system with great success.
In addition to that, mini bosses and bosses have a Break mechanic, which basically gives you huge score bonuses for destroying certain parts of bosses in sequence or under certain conditions, (like for example, destroying small turrets before the main one).
All this makes Blue Revolver Double Action's scoring very engaging and extremely satisfying to pull off.
There are many little things you could discover constantly replaying the game. Like for example sometimes you might want to sacrifice extra life on purpose, because respawning will refresh your bombs, and bomb kills drop ammo for your special weapons. But for that, you need to get extra lives by scoring high. You see where this is going?
All in all, it's a great SHMUP. As someone who was never big into nor good at them, this one finally clicked and made me understand the genre in general. And also became my favorite SHMUP.

Difficult but not in a fun way.
The playfield perspective feels like this was made for a handheld, feels smooshed given the size of enemies and big thicc boi bubble butt bullets.
The pale easter egg color palate makes bullet tracking more difficult than need be, and the alternate bullet color scheme is even worse (green, black, red).
The levels feel long and repetitive. Level 2 has a sections that keeps tossing the same easy to kill enemies on the screen, 3 at a time, kill, then wait 4-5 seconds, here's 3 more bouncy enemies, wait 4-5 secs, kill them , repeat for liker a minute , and they provided no challenge, and I'm like how long are we going to draw out this bland parallax background? Sorry, I am just finding it boring.
Maybe if the levels were broken up with mid-level bosses to make it a bit more memorable, then that would help.
I guess you only get 3x lives and there are no continues? Maybe the option can be unlocked?
Kinda sucks bc some bosses are rather difficult. There's a mech dude that keeps zipping around the screen, and you can only get a few pew pew sprays on him until he jets off leaving a spray of bullets. I just ended up bombing the crap out of him to end my misery despite being able to dodge the patterns.
The music feels tacked on and doesn't add to the dynamic of the game (sounds like 90s techno dribble).
there are missions and an XP mode that needs to be unlocked, but from what i can tell, it is just replaying the same 5 stages.

Even though I might not be in love with everything about it, it's still up there with the best of the best of modern shooters.

As a shmup scrub I found Blue Revolver to be quite difficult even on normal. But it's challenging in a way that makes me want to keep playing and improving. I really like the flourish & break scoring systems. Earning an extend because you kept a good flourish chain going feels so damn good.
Between the variety in characters, special weapons, and alternate modes, this feels like an extremely easy recommend for anyone even remotely curious about shmups.
It's a very awesome game. Very fun scoring system, intense patterns, great music, and top-class bullet visibility options.

Blue Revolver is one of those rare games that taught me how to love an entire genre. As a newcomer, it’s easy to pick up and immediately find fun in weaving through patterns and hitting break bonuses for stylish kills. While there are no continues, the practice options and adaptive difficulty modes are a great way to make incremental progress while building skills like scoring, resource management, and routing. The game builds toward a pinnacle challenge that demands mastery of the game’s systems and the discipline to push through failure as you craft and execute the perfect 30 minute run. It’s a strangely compelling type of journey that I once assumed was not for me, and Blue Revolver changed my mind.
Pretty much everything I could ever want from an indie shmup.

This is probably the best bullet hell I've played yet. Very fun, good music, decent challenge but not too difficult either. Highly recommend if you like Bullet hells.
An amazing game that is nothing else but pure passion for the genre
Literally everything about this game is amazing from the music, to the levels, to bosses, the enemy designs etc (You could list just about everything in this game).
This feels like a golden standard when it comes to indie games with all of its customisation options that are available, the leaderboards and replay system, the stellar practice modes, the ship choices and each ship having several weapons to choose from to even all the extras and guides that are within the game itself just goes back to what I said at the start of the review of this game being full of passion from the developers. There's also a 120hz option which is just awesome and more shmups should have this.
The scoring system in this game is also really fun which really helps with replaying the game, it also great that each weapon and ship has its own leaderboards too so you can compare to other players who use the same kit as you.
I gotta say that I wasnt a big fan of the default voice that the game has which is "Mae", but the game lets you change basically everything in the settings so you can just switch it there.
The developers themselves are really awesome too and I recommend checking out interviews from them.
The programmer Danbo is also from Scotland which is really cool as Im from there too
Phenomenal SHMUP. Great difficulty that fits both veterans and beginners without being boring and numbing, fun scoring system and amazing soundtrack. A must buy if you even have a slight interest in bullet hells.

It's like the amazing CAVE games of old, so It's incredible. It goes a bit too far on the pastel coloring, everything looks like it could be on an ice cream box, but it emulates how CAVE games play. If you want a true unfiltered amazing bullet hell experience like this one, try DonDonPachi!
tl;dr - An absolute recommend to all STG enthusiasts, new and old. Blue Revolver: Double Action represents the definitive version of the game to play.
I feel like it's time to finally write about this brilliant game. Sorry for the long review, but my rambling turned a bit passionate. From the early dev streams in 2015, the fun stage 1 community score attacks in early iterations, the v0.45 disc distributed at Touhoucon by woof that year (which came with a fantastic OST promotional minimix by Dyzphazia that I still listen to), to the eventual release in late 2016. While I wasn't keeping a keen eye on the game's development leading up to its release, when the game finally released its impact on the scene was large - marking what I believe was a pivotal point in the indie and doujin STG scene and contributing to the renaissance of the genre's future.
When Blue Revolver first came out, the game was like a breath of fresh air. Easy-to-grasp scoring mechanics, brutal rank-based difficulty, a killer aesthetic thanks to woof's art style and Qygen & Novaturtle's soundtrack. While the game did commit to a pixel style in-game, the flair of woof's artistry was preserved through the simplicity of the sprites and choice of colours, aiming to offer a seamless transition between the two mediums. The music offered a mix of electronic hardcore genres like techno and psytrance, high tempo and high BPM to match the high octane pacing of the gameplay. As an indie shoot 'em up, Blue Revolver offered one of the most complete packages of its kind.
The gameplay was everything you could expect from a bullet-hell STG: a large number of bullets, small player ship hitbox, evade and destroy them all to win the game. Easier said than done, of course. The game's scoring system is where the more intricate and technical aspect of the game lies. Destroy 8 ships (or objects) to max the hit counter, then cash it in by using your special shot to destroy things with a multiplier. Simple enough to understand so that new players wouldn't have to think too much when integrating it into their approach, but those seeking the elusive score extends may want to sit down and route out the optimal enemies to cash in on in the stage. The first set of extends are fairly obtainable without too much effort, with the score requirement subsequently increasing each time. The design isn't anything new but it offered a fun little taste for the lesser or uninitiated to try and push for more to increase their chances of survival.
To make the scoring feel less stiff, the game introduced hidden "Break bonuses" throughout the run. They're a callback to a classic retro school of thought: If you perform some hidden requirement, you'll be offered bonus points. The number of Break bonuses in a stage are denoted by the Break counter at the end of a stage - with the exception Stage 5 which omitted the stage result screen (likely an intentional design to drive players like me insane on if we had found every Break). In similar fashion to the extends, the requirements for these hidden bonuses are usually lenient and new players will easily perform them on accident without any prior knowledge. This coupled with the Break counter in the stage result encouraged the player to try and approach sections differently and experiment, loosening the flow of the scoring system just enough so that they didn't feel completely anchored down when learning a level.
The game was not without its flaws, however. Rank (dynamic difficulty) had always felt weird to me in the original iteration. In typical STG fashion, rank increases based on how well your perform/score and decreases when you die. While Normal and Parallel difficulty lock ranks at their respective values, Hyper took control of the full scale to provide a dynamic-feeling of difficulty. For me, I found that rank always raised faster than I could even hope to control it and often times I found myself wondering why I should even play Hyper when I usually found my rank in the realm of Parallel difficulty. To make things worse, certain sections of levels were designed a little too tightly to the core scoring system. This grew especially evident in the later stages where speedkilling would often result in "dead air" - an awkward state where you're waiting for 5-10 seconds with nothing to do until more enemies appear. At the time, I tolerated it, but as more indie/doujin STGs released, Blue Revolver unfortunately became the kind of game I could only recommend to genuine enthusiasts of the genre; there simply were better STGs out there. Blue Revolver walked so they could run.
danbo, the developer for Blue Revolver, was aware of the inherent problems in some of the game's flow. Perhaps "aware" is an understatement; true scrutiny of a work can only truly be done by its creator. If anyone was aware of its issues, it would be him.
Thus, Double Action was announced as a free arrange mode update, originally aiming to shift the gameplay of Blue Revolver and hopefully alleviate some of the problematic elements of its gameplay. To be included was a remixed soundtrack done by Exemia and Hagane. It sounded like it was going to breathe new life into the game.
But Double Action was delayed.
Forgive me ahead of time, I am far too lazy to do my research here and I didn't follow the development of Double Action too closely. I don't even recall when Double Action was announced other than it being what felt like ages ago, and soon my hype for it faded. The few glimpses I did see from danbo on twitter, however, made it clear that he was going through a rough patch in life. This was, in no doubt, exacerbated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic which shook our world and changed a lot of how we lived our lives. I'll refrain from the digression, but the simple explanation was that many things were preventing danbo from fully realizing Double Action. To me, the arrange mode would release when it was ready.
Years went by and I completely forgot about the game. My life took a turn for a new career path and I was back in college in 2024 - when suddenly a public beta branch went up for Double Action, labeled as v1.50a (likely a reference to CAVE STGs having their infamous 1.5 rebalance). I played it for a run or two and really liked it, but my life was busy so that was as much as I played. Blue Revolver: Double Action released as a free update in November 2024 but I simply didn't have the time and completely forgot about it.
Nearly a year later, I finally sat down and put in some decent time into the game. What was previously envisioned as an arrange mode turned out to be a full game rebalance. Although the core scoring system remains the same, extends, rank values, special cash-in timings, and much more were adjusted to allow the game to be much more freeform. Additionally, some stage sections and bullet patterns were completely redone, with stage 5 feeling like a completely new game. Hyper difficulty no longer quickly ramps up to some pseudo-Parallel difficulty mode and extends. Normal and Hyper have extends every X-million points, which encourages an engaging gameplay loop. Score hard, intentionally die to have more resources to score harder and get even more lives. Parallel's difficulty retains the fixed extends but with a bomb awarded every 10-million points, cementing its identity as a difficulty where resources are plentiful but dying is a very real consequence.
Blue Revolver: Double Action became far more than just an arranged mode - it's the definitive version of the game to play. Double Action has pushed the game out of its pitfalls and secured itself alongside other shoot 'em ups in the hall of timeless masterpieces. Between the wonderfully vibrant visuals and choice of colours, it's robust, energetic, and pulsing soundtrack, and the rewarding scoring system amid its cut-throat gameplay, Blue Revolver has established an ageless identity for itself.
And to me, that is true success.

Drew me immediately and I couldn't stop playing for a while. Game provides sufficient challenge if you are a touhou veteran. I played on controller but part of me wants to try it out on keyboard for better refined control on dodging in higher levles
Hard sometimes for me to visualize enemies from bg, so I would run into them a lot in the level. Eventually you learn, but that's tough in the first time runs.

Got a clear on Normal like the day after I bought this, then like 10 months later I was finally able to get a clear on Hyper after getting taunted by Scrandle for so long. I've been looking for a shmup that would finally give me "The Itch" that unlocks my brain's ability to really get into a shmup. That still hasn't happened, but it felt really damn good to finally get that Hyper clear on a run where I had plenty of lives to spare after learning boss Breaks and not falling into a panic after hitting ranks 4 and 5. I didn't even know rank 5 naturally counted down over time. The 5 went down to a 4 and my life counter went UP instead of DOWN because I got an Extend during all that madness? Guess I learned something from all those attempts after all.
Now even when I lose in Scrandle, I've won in Danbo's eyes. Maybe. I don't know them like that.

This game is very hard and very pretty looking. Very well made too. Has all the fundamentals of a great bullethell with its own unique chaining mechanic where once you chain 8 enemies you can cash in your chain by using your super weapon to get BIG money by using it on a crowd of enemies. Its really fun. Games really gorgeous too
