Bought for the art style but got bored within a few minutes. I do enjoy a good shmup but this one wasn't for me. Such is the gamble you take with Steam sales.
Commendable for the art, but the gameplay is lacking and buggy in places.
I've invested a little under three hours and I'm just... done. [Edit to mention - based on my last progress achievement (again after less than three hours of play) only being gained by 8% of players, it appears I'm not alone in this]. Although the preview videos show side-scrolling play, so far it's been pretty non-existent. As far as the side-scroll shooter part goes (which is most of the game), it's simplistic and frankly boring. Just hold down the button and avoid projectiles. Boss battles (which happen around every five stages) take ages and aren't very challenging. All this is made even worse if like myself you spent your currency on projectile weapons that forget to fire bullets half the time. It's a game that looks like a ton of effort was put into the art, but feels like some of that should have been redirected towards developing the actual gameplay.

Cripplingly slow progression and economy will force many players to grind well past the point of enjoyment to see past the initial offerings for equipment.
I have never seen another video game that uses ballpoint pen for its entire art style, please play this.
Ballpoint Universe is a pretty good western shoot-'em-up, though way too grindy if you want to get all of the ship customization stuff unlocked without cheating. I did cheat once I beat the game to try a bunch of the weapons I'd never gotten unlocked during my playthrough, and completed all achievements (even if several of them didn't unlock properly for me) in about 6 hours.
It also has a platformer-styled worldmap between the shoot-'em-up stages. This has utterly terrible controls even after you switch to keyboard controls, but thankfully it never asks you to do anything extremely hard and there's no penalty for failure, and the worldmap is very pretty.
All in all a solid recommendation, especially for the artstyle. It's also dirt cheap.

This is a sidescrolling shooter for weirdos (affectionate). Boasting gorgeous hand-drawn pen art, the shooting is unremarkable and the mouse-based platforming goofy, but the sheer passion and care on display outweighs any possible criticisms I might have.
Skip the endless mode initially, you're going to bounce off the game if you do. Start exploring and basking in the well-crafted world on display here, you won't regret it.
It has a few good shmup ideas, and the visuals look cool overall. But the platforming sections felt pointless and have extremely bad controls unless you switch to keyboard. They're also buggy and can easily lead to softlocks. Many of the shmup sections, meanwhile, are too repetitive and easy. And the final stage's visuals are so chaotic and overwhelming that it can be hard to see any of the enemies and bullets.
ボールペンで描かれた独特の世界が魅力的な作品でした。
最初は何が何だか分からないまま物語を進めてゆくのですが、様々な住人達との会話を通じてこの世界で起きている異変と主人公のするべき事が徐々に分かってゆくというストーリー展開も良いものでした。
ゲームとしてはアクションステージで世界を探索し、各地にいる住人達の依頼を受けてシューティングステージで戦うという内容なのですが、最初は自機が弱すぎる上に自機をパワーアップさせる為に必要なインク（このゲームの世界のお金）もなかなか貯まりづらく、最初はもどかしい思いをするかもしれません。
しかしゲームを進めて自機が強くなってゆくとどんどんシューティングステージが面白く感じるようになるので根気強くプレイしていただきたい作品だと思います。
蛇足ですがアクションステージでは初めから世界のほぼ全てを回れる上に世界中に隠された「ゴールデンスケッチ」というアイテムを手に入れるとボーナスのインクが入手できるので、それを利用してまずは自機強化に努めると効率よくプレイできるかもしれません。

I'm not a huge fun of this type of games (shoot 'em up) but I liked this one. I was more fascinated at the whole art syle tbh. Very unique. Grats to the devs for making something as cool as this.

Nice little game! The art style does make it a little hard to parse what's happening in a few levels, but it's very pleasant to look at. I enjoy the emphasis on melee attack options, and the ship upgrade options make for a fun meta-progression.

Even in 2024 this game is pretty unique and fun, if you like shoot 'em ups and platforming this game took me about 2 days to 100% and I enjoyed my time with it. The shoot 'em up sections are definitely the highlight especially if you're playing with mouse, you move as fast as your mouse moves so the skill ceiling is pretty high, with the later waves in endless mode getting pretty challenging. Platforming with the mouse definitely sucks but thankfully you can switch the control method on the pause screen so switching back and forth helps a lot. There's a story as well but nothing mind blowing there, if you want to spend a few non-stressful afternoons with some decent gameplay and visuals I definitely recommend this game.
For whatever reason it took me longer than it should to 'get' this game. I thought it was some sort of quirky notebook paper platformer. Maybe one with a goofy story to draw me into the inventive world the creator has made, but no.
This is a shoot 'em up at its core. One loosely held together with some minor platformer segments and hardly a story to tie anything together.
All in all, once things clicked, I really enjoyed this one. It's super cheap and I'm glad to have played it.

Before I begin, one disclaimer. This is an Indie game on a budget price, and the developer "studio" is really just three dudes who love making games together - as it says right there in the About section. So I will cut them slack for the janky mouse control in the platformer part of the game that everyone is complaining about. Yes, it was annoying, and I did waste some time getting used to it/redoing stuff, end of story.
WIth that off the chest, I'd give a 10/10 for game art, the concept, and uniqueness of lore. You're a doodle in an artwork Universe, and as you finish missions and beat bosses you unravel the whole saga of [spoiler]Geometry Logicians vs Doodles[/spoiler] and earn ink, with which you upgrade your battleship. That's some concept!
The shooter part of the game is near-perfect in gameplay, with just a couple quirky interactions with some bosses, nothing significant. The variety of upgrades actually matter, and you can 100% the game with whatever options you like and prefer as per your playstyle (as long your choices are within reason, duh!). The well balanced upgrade tree was surprising in a game of this scope.
BP-U is 1 part puzzle-platformer and 4 parts arcade shooter, all-in-all a pretty fun package that I would recommend!

O jogo se divide em duas partes aonde uma é um jogo de plataforma aonde conta a história e a outra é um shoot'em up.
A arte do jogo é bem legal em um estilo desenhado a mão, simples e bem desenhada. A trilha sonora do jogo é bem legal também e divertida.
A parte de plataforma 2d não a muito o que o fazer a não ser aprender um pouco sobre a história que apenas dá um sentido ao jogo, o ruim é só pra controlar, tanto no mouse quanto no teclado em alguns momentos ficou ruim de controlar.
A parte shoot'em up é a principal do jogo, nela você tem uma nave e com ela você destrói os inimigos e absorve as tintas que eles deixam, com a tinta você consegue melhorar a nave podendo equipar duas armas, dois acessórios que dão habilidades a nave. As armas são bem variadas entre estadas, lanças, armas de projéteis, revolver, fuzis, lança mísseis e escudos.
A jogabilidade é boa e desde que você tenha as armas certas e as melhorias dá pra jogar tranquilamente, na minha opinião é melhor de se jogar com o mouse. Tem as missões que você encontra pelo jogo com um objetivo e tem o modo infinito aonde você vai jogando até perder todas as vidas.
No geral o jogo até que é divertido, pode se tornar entediante se você não tiver as melhorias certas e o jogo acaba ficando frustrante, no meu caso comecei com as armas spiker blade e a chain spear, e depois o beam rifle e o lightining spear, com essas consegui matar todos os inimigos sem nenhum problema e como acessórios os magnets para absorver as tintas e o Ace que atira ondas de energia que destroem os inimigos e os projéteis que eles lançam. COm essas armas passei o jogo todo sem ser muito fácil mas também sem ficar frustrante.

Decent arcade shooter, gimcrack platforming. The ballpoint aesthetic is only cute for a bit before it feeling overbearing. Exploration of the platforming levels was good, if it only wasn't stippled with weird doodled collectibles (I didn't like this even on Psychonauts, thanks) and some rather awkward platforming controls. I enjoyed the shooting levels, it's responsive and snappy, and has the right amount of difficulty.

It would've never crossed my mind to add a melee weapon to a shoot em up, But I'm so glad they did that. Thanks to it the game play turns into a risk reward situation where you gotta choose if you wanna be aggressive and get coins or stand back and not kill as fast. Not to mention the beautiful artwork everywhere you look. Love this game, deff recommend

A blend of a platformer and shmup that ends up having more style than substance.
The artwork is beautiful and the bullet hell parts are accessible in that the screen isn't overwhelmed.
But I encountered a game-breaking bug after the logicians level where if you return to the home garden and then try to enter the doors to return to the side scrolling areas, the game shuts down. I can no longer progress in the game, wasting about 7+ hours of my time.
Plus, in general, the platforming sections are miserable with the controls. There is no precision in moving your character which causes more frustration and missed landings than reasonable.

Alright game. As other reviews say, game is split into two parts, a platformer where you learn the story and a 2D side-scrolling shmup where the bulk of your time is spent. The platforming isn't great, but it's not very long, and there's tons of checkpoints in the final area between each annoying spot. The shmup is fun for what it is, biggest complaint is the game has a ton of weapons but you'll never have enough money to actually get any of the end-game ones unless you spend a bunch of time grinding the same level.
One of my biggest complaint is that in infinite, the bosses HP is jacked up, which is fine, but there's no indication of how long you've got to go for a given boss, which just makes the entire thing seem a bit more tedious.
But for the price of admission being so low (and better if you can snag it in a bundle), there are worse ways to spend a handful of hours, and the artwork and story is fun and cool.

Na grande maioria das vezes, quando uma desenvolvedora possui a pretensão de oferecer uma experiência artística diferenciada, acaba pecando horrores no quesito gameplay/jogabilidade, e esse é o caso desse jogo.
Ballpoint Universe - Infinite é basicamente um joguinho ruim de flash em todos os sentidos, o gameplay consiste em andar pelo cenário à procura dos npcs, e cumprindo os desafios propostos por eles (fase de nave).
A jogabilidade é bem ruim, e a última fase é um desastre em termos de planejamento, inclusive pessoas com epilepsia fotossensível (aquela doença envolvendo o Pokemon) não devem jogar o jogo pois na última fase acontecem diversas explosões de luzes com flashes contínuos, que inclusive prejudicam a performance nessa fase.

O jogo é bem descartável, jogabilidade é precária (padrão jogos de flash), e também não é divertido, portanto não o recomendo.

a unique-looking shmup. controls are a bit weird, but the game is not that challenging
Well, the game looked good at first touch. Peculiar style and well designed. The shooter part is funny but not sure on how to deal with the platformer session, so I'm missing the plot or story to develop and upgrade the character I guess.
Deserves a second touch pretty soon, overall more than worth a try.

画风挺有趣的，这个是主要的亮点。射击手感一般，特别是射击位置和近战位置高低不一样，玩起来有点不舒服。难度就还行，比较轻松就可以过关。

这游戏总之就是玩起来莫名其妙的不舒服，可能是近战自动操作和射击手动操作的分离原因。
这是一个横版飞行射击为主，探索收集为辅的游戏，难度上比较温和，初始5条命，有血量，能续币，还能升级武器，再不行还有练习挑战，然而本作贯彻的是[b]”神风精神“[/b]，虽然血量能抗子弹，但是碰到敌人就会被秒。从卡牌里的神风飞机[spoiler]这神风飞机还是逻辑军的，真讽刺[/spoiler]和提供的日语，也能猜出是个什么尿性。
圆珠笔画风确实吸引人，但相对的制作经费有限，敌人略显单调。声称是无尽模式，但来来去去就那么几关，可能前两关打过的boss，下两关还是这两个，唯一的不同只有堆怪和堆血量，越到后面对火力的需求越大。然而本作最强武器——跟踪导弹有个bug，会一直锁定一个版外的目标，但是子弹打到版边是会消失的，所以导弹永远打不死这个不进版的目标，也永远不会打其他敌人。在天上掉果实的那种图尤为严重，而且这张图是三面大量出怪，就很蛋疼。
Nice game with an [b]absolutely wonderful ballpoint art[/b]. Very original, though it can get boring pretty fast and the lack of guide can be confusing too. I did enjoyed it as casual play from time to time between other games. It alternate between exploration and side-scroller battleship battle. I recommend the mouse control as the better way to play, by the way. Music is ok but repetitive, there are few tracks only. Gameplay is smooth and nice. It could have been more but it's not so bad either.
Lo que me llamó la atención y es el absoluto protagonista de este juego, es su [b]diseño artistico hecho a mano con bolígrafo[/b]. ¡Espectacular! El encanto lamentablemente se pierde rápidamente con todo lo demás. La música es repetitiva y hay pocas pistas, así que...
Los controles y la jugabilidad están bastante bien. Lo cierto es que las batallas de naves en scrol lateral están genial. Para jugar partiditas sueltas entre otros juegos, perfecto, pero poco más.
El juego alterna entre exploración y las batallas de nave; la falta de guía hace que Ballpoint Universe sea confuso y se vuelva aburrido con rápidez. No es mal juego, pero podría haber sido bastante más de lo que es.
¿Lo recomiendo? En oferta, es curioso y entretenido. Pero no espereis mucho de él.

Ballpoint Universe
Very interesting hand drawn art style, silly game play and comical narrative overall.
I enjoyed the 20-30 mins of game play, usually I don't write positive reviews with so little game play but I did find it unique within steams library.
Because of this it gets a recommendation to buy, I don't think I will come back it though as it just was not fully for me, fun for a short while and the game is not expensive to pick up.

A short interesting shoot em up mixed with a bit of platforming here and there. It has a very trippy art style and it looks and feels solid to me. Not super long and priced just right for it. Great little game!
Great game. Has a nice feeling to it, great story, immersive world, interesting graphics, exciting and enticing, short enough. Only downside is when you're playing the character not the ship, it feels like he's drunk, high, and slipping on bananas/ ice cream every time you try to move him. 9/10, fully recommended even at full price!

This is a bad sidescroller game trapped inside an even worse platformer game.
Awful controls and game design.
A fun horizontal shoot'em'up with some platforming in the mix. As the name suggests, the art style is based on drawings using a ballpoint pen.
I finished the game in just 2 days, so it's not a long game. It has a few bugs but it's a fun game and it is re-playable through the infinite mode. As long as you have patience for bugs and wonky platforming, it's a fun shoot'em'up.

- The art style is interesting, Using doodles was a great idea.

- Hard to figure how to upgrade. At least took me a while. You need to drag to switch weapons. The mouse scroll does not work.
- The platforming part is wonky, boring and pointless.
- The story is not very interesting. Too much talk about [spoiler] creativity vs logic, without much of a conclusion. [/spoiler].
- The lack of colors makes it somewhat bland to look at.
- There's no way to find all stickers easily since there's no help at all. Using a walk-through is necessary.
- There's not much to do after getting all weapons besides collecting all items.

- Sometimes some guns don't fire at all (e.g., shotgun).
- There are bugs that may get you stuck, forcing you to restart.
- Restarting a level to get all gold is not fast. Talking and choosing weapons is required.
- Achievements don't work at all on Linux.

Obtenido en un paquete de claves aleatorias, Ballpoint Universe me ha parecido un juego sencillo y simple, que puede ser una buena opción para pasar el rato sin consumir muchos recursos de nuestro PC.
Es un juego con una estética única, ya que gráficamente, tiene la impronta de haber sido realizado mediante diseños dibujados a bolígrafo, y la verdad es que no conozco muchos juegos que compartan esta característica.
Estamos ante otro juego que ignora al segmento panhispánico de jugadores, siendo un punto negativo, ya que no entenderemos bien la trama del título al carecer de traducción a nuestra noble lengua.
Manejamos a una especie de monigote narigón, picudo y de grandes ojos sobre un escenario 2D, donde deberemos saltar si es menester, e interactuar con objetos y personajes de diversa índole que van apareciendo en pantalla. Pronto daremos el paso de manejar una nave espacial armada con una ametralladora y una especie de espada en forma de apéndice, con la que deberemos dar muerte a una serie de engendros dibujados con tinta, incluyendo jefes finales.
Es un juego que destaca por su estética, con una música que rápido se vuelve cansina y reiterativa, siendo este, bajo mi punto de vista, su aspecto más nefasto.
No obstante, en general, el juego me parece bastante decente e ideal para jugarlo e ir superando los retos que no propone, con una jugabilidad aceptable y un desarrollo bastante rápido de la acción.
Otro punto interesante es la posibilidad de ir mejorando ciertas facetas de nuestra nave de ataque, y de ir recogiendo gotas de tinta según matamos a los enemigos para gastarlas como moneda del juego.
Tiene un precio adecuado, y si te llama su aspecto o ambientación y te motivan este tipo de juegos, puede ser una buena opción el añadirlo a tu biblioteca.

A very unique game and an interesting combination of genres. Nothing groundbreaking but when you need to see and experience something new and maybe revisit retro shooters of old at the same time, this would scratch that itch.
Although it has some bugs and not the best controls, you can tell that this game was made from a place of passion and heart. It is relatively short, but has great replay value.
