Finally got to play a game from my childhood! Old school but brilliant. The puzzles were tough but with a little help from the walkthrough, managed to complete the game which I abandoned all those years ago! Feeling accomplished now :)

This game does have a lot of nostalgic charm, as many reviews have already stated. This game is from a bygone era and it comes with all the good and bad of puzzle games from that time period.
The good comes in the form of the full motion video. The acting is over-the-top which is exactly what this game required. I particularly enjoyed the performance of Dirk Benedict. The humor is a plus also.
The bad comes in the form of the puzzles and the navigation. Many of the puzzles are not logical in their solution, so the game devolves into a "use everything in your inventory on everything you encounter" mindset. The navigation can be frustrating at times....there are quick travel devices which could have been more conveniently placed. Trying to determine which areas can be visited or which things can be interacted with relies on very precise cursor placement.
All that being said...if you enjoy cheap older games and are willing to put up with looking at a walk-through at some point then, by all means, give this one a try.;

Out of all of the graphical first person adventure games set in the Zork universe after the fall of Infocom, this one best captures the feel and fun of the original text adventures. Phenomenal game, even if you only play it once. Great fun.

Если любите смешные квесты, где каждая смерть дарит тебе смешное описание, как ты сам сиганул в пропасть или вошел в палатку со стражниками, то не проходите мимо х)

the opening cutscene proudly proclaims there are no more grues in Zork. Within two minutes, you can climb down a dark well and be eaten by a grue. 10/10 no notes.

All I can say, one of the - if not the - best Point&Click adventure games. It is rather old, but this game was my first of its kind. The magical world is crafted with love and humor. This game holds so many good ideas, that, at least in my opinion, still hold up today!

If you're after a short, weird and wonderful game, you'll like this. Save often though, as some actions need to be done in a certain sequence else you can't continue with the game, I had to redo some parts.

This was my favourite Zork game as a kid and put a smile on my face the whole way through playing it again. The asset resolution is a bit rough to view now. Some areas required backtracking and mousing around the screen as it can be easy to miss additional direction arrows with the speed of the camera panning. Love the challenge of figuring out how to progress without much hints as was a feature of these old Zork games. Anytime I felt stuck i'd come back to play fresh and solve/find what was needed. And of course all the humorous ways in which you will die are all part of the charm and content. Save often!

For how old this game is, it was a fantastic addition to the Zork series. Dirk Benedict from A-Team and Battlestar Galactica was awesome! Rip Taylor was also a wonderful cast member. It was funny, well made, and had a good storyline. I recommend the entire series, which with some help, can still be played today and most of the Infocom text series can be played online. The best, funniest, and almost first adventure series for PC. (we do have to mention Scott Adams text games for Commodore and Vic20 tho)

Classic Zork style puzzle game that challenges you to think outside the box. Loved this game when I was younger still love it now.
I grew up playing this game sitting next to my Dad on a Windows 98 computer. This is extremely nostalgic for me and a huge memory that I share with him--so needless to say I'm so happy to see it having been ported over to Steam. Back then it would take me hours to beat the two disc game, but now it only takes me 30 minutes to an hour. (But then again I've played it so much that I practically have everything memorized.) I always recommend this game to my friends just because of the fond memories I have of playing it--and to this day I /still/ quote lines from this game. Too bad nobody really gets what a Grue or Frobozz Electric is.

WHAT IS A ZORK? Zork is a humorous fictional fantasy universe that was created in the earliest days of computer gaming. The games span several centuries, much like the 'Fallout' universe, albeit, a very, very, different type of a game and universe.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS GAME? Only for fans of interactive fiction and those who are well versed in the Zork universe. Also, people who hate pixel hunting (more on this below). However, chances are, most people who love these games, are probably from an older generation, like myself, who played these games before computer graphics even existed.
UPON RECONSIDERATION... I'd also like to recommend this game to anybody who has played the second and/or third 'THE JOURNEYMAN PROJECT' games, assuming you liked your companion in those games. In Zork Grand Inquisitor, you have a 'virtual' companion that is very similar to your companion in those games.
WHAT IS INTERACTIVE FICTION? If that sounds confusing, look up 'interactive fiction'. Once upon a time, back in the 80's, the publisher, INFOCOM, made a whole catalog of games that were 'text only'. In other words, you would read a description of a location and then order your character in the story to do something by typing in a command. Sound complicated? Not really... games could only understand a limited set of commands, very similar to point-and-click adventures such as examine, use, move in a direction, etc.
CAN I PLAY THIS GAME WITHOUT HAVING PLAYED THE PREVIOUS ZORK GAMES? Yes you can. You do not need any knowledge (nor will it give you any advantage) of the previous games to solve the puzzles. The problem is that you will miss out an almost all of the humor, as well as the multitude of shout-outs and nods to previous games in which essentially every location is based on.
IS IT DIFFICULT? Yes, it is. But not on the level of 'expert' level. I'd give it an Infocom 'Advanced' rating. If you are not a veteran of point-and-click adventures or interactive fiction (which can be extremely difficult, for those who aren't familiar), you will find this game to be very challenging.
ARE THE PUZZLES FAIR. WHAT ABOUT PIXEL HUNTING? The best part of 'Grand Inquisitor' is that the puzzles, while difficult are fair and there is essentially no pixel hunting. The areas that you need to know about are very clearly shown over a large area indicated by your pointer.
WHO WOULD I NOT RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR?: Anybody who does not specifically love point-and-click adventure games as well as people who do not like the graphics on older generation games.

I played this as a kid and I was surprised how much I remembered. Even then, I got stuck a few times. Don't feel bad if you have to look something up. There's occasionally very small details that are easy to miss. Explore! There are clues in various places too. Have a notepad nearby... sometimes writing the puzzle down was all I needed to see what I needed to do.
Also, I highly recommend playing in windowed mode. I could only get this to work with Alt+Enter once in the game. This will give you a small window, but the graphics will look significantly better this way (since this is closer to the game's native resolution).
Relax and enjoy the game. You can get it done pretty quickly (~6 hours for me, but again, I recalled a lot).
Lastly, SAVE OFTEN and DO NOT throck the grass!
Well, This game has some nostalgic vibes, as being one of many '90s games I played when I was in my teens. Zork Grand Inquisitor just hold up today, been a very charmful point-and-click adventure, If this is your first time playing this and you're looking for a great time and to use all 100% (I'm Kidding) of your brain power solving those puzzles then i wholeheartedly recommend this game for you, you won't regret it.
I played some of this game years ago and stopped. I played through it 100% recently and would recommend the game. The Zork text adventure concept was one of the first games to be put on a computer, worth looking into.
Aside form the frustrating point and click interface (which lacks the specificity of natural language in the original Zork games), this is a fun return to the Great Underground Empire. Great characters and voice work, and much dopamine in solving the puzzles. Hint: You'll need a lamp or you might be eaten by a grue!
This game was a bit different from the others, one particular part the soundtrack touched my heart. I'd say if you like the Zork series go ahead and get this one. Yes it's different but I liked it. I think Return To Zork is still the best one.
The final Zork game to my knowledge. As a long time fan of the original text adventure classics, I remember sort of poo-poo'ing these mid-90s high budget graphic point and clicks. There were a lot of boring games of the same ilk around at the time. But I'm so glad I came back to Nemesis, which was apparent immediately, and this one which didn't become apparent until I solved a few puzzles. Grand Inquisitor is much more in the spirit of the Infocom games. In the same fashion that Beyond Zork was, Grand Inquisitor is almost more a continuation of the less well known, but equally, if not more amazing Enchanter/Sorcerer/Spellbreaker trilogy. It even, to my great elation, brought back the e/s/s magic system. If you enjoyed the Infocom games, I consider this one a must-have.
If you are new to Zork, maybe heard a lot of things wanted to try slogging, this game is going to seem like a weird old broken piece of nonsense......for the first maybe half an hour until you start solving things. It really snowballs. Really, wait until you get underground to pass your judgement on this title. If you are a Zork noob, start at Zork 1. That will tell you if you're down.
Of all the Zork ports on Steam, I think this one works the best. Beyond Zork is still the king of the series in my opinion, so get the old ones too, whatever, but those are missing the peripherals you will need to actually beat the games.
This game is a classic, When I got my gateway computer i spent hours on this game. I have looked for it forever and finally found it. This game is old school and you will def enjoy this classic
Good classic point and click adventure, from the days of when DVD-Rom was new and cool with awesome VGA quality cut-scenes. The game its self has aged really well and still looks really good, brings back a lot of memories from when we got out gateway in 98 and this game came with it to show off all of the awesome graphics of the time. Didn't take me long to beat, but that is because I remember most of it from beating it as a child.
This runs even better than it when I got this game included with a Gateway computer purchase back in the 90s. Was great to play through again!
A fun little point and click with 4/10 rating puzzles. The writing is 9/10 and is still extremely funny and holds up to this day.

This game is an absolute delight. If you love janky old wacky hilarious FMVs then this game is definitely a good purchase. The controls are shockingly decent for this type of game. Once you get used to it, it's honestly not bad, unlike some FMVs that are nearly impossible to adjust to *cough Tex Murphy cough.* It's still a point and click but you get a bit more free movement and there are shortcuts to spells and items at the top of the screen if opening the menu is too much work for you. Some of the puzzles are obtuse but honestly could it even be called an FMV if there wasn't at least a handful of outrageously ridiculous puzzles that no normal human would figure out? I thoroughly enjoyed this game and played it all the way to the end. Great ending too. Overall the game had me laughing more than I was stuck. Fun time. Recommend.
The puzzles are clever, if mostly very easy. The graphics are admittedly dated. But the humor in this game is fantastic. It's so rare that videogames are funny, that when you find one that is legitimately funny like this game, it makes it truly a classic. Michael McKean as Dalboz of Gurth is hilarious.

I've play this game when it first came out - graphics were great for its day however, they do not hold up now. Still an amazing story line, clever dialogue, funny interactions, and overall a great point and click adventure game.

Enjoyable throwback game
I played this so many years ago and, though, I don't remember much of it, I do remember that the ending left me with a really good feeling. I hope to have that same feeling again. As Maya Angelou said, I don't remember what was said, but I remember how it made me feel.

What really raises it above most adventure games is Michael McKean as the talking lantern, helping the player throughout the game.
Another very important aspect is Mark Morgan's ambient music. The atmosphere in this game really sucks the player in.
If you're into Zork generally, this one really goes to town when it comes to lore. You even get to visit the white house and fiddle with the mailbox.

Being the last of the Zork Games (unless you count the now defunct Zork online game, but I don’t), Zork: Grand Inquisitor stands to be a perfectly fine sendoff to the series.
Like the other point-and-click Zork games, the game retains quite a bit of charm, despite its age. The graphics are serviceable even now, and the overacting and cheesiness of the character hamming it up lends to the charm and quirky nature of Zork, even if some moments can get grating. There are also quite a few references for those that played the older games (and the Enchanter trilogy), and it's also fun to try the different magic spells you get throughout the game and see what happens.
The difficulty seems to be much more forgiving. While it is possible to die and get a game over, hints are pretty common considering you've got a companion with you for most of the game. It's overall a more relaxed, more forgiving Zork game compared to the previous entries.
Overall, Zork: Grand Inquisitor can be dated and even annoying at times, but it is also charming, humorous, and a good send-off to the Zork series. It's easily worth your time, and an enjoyable experience for both first and longtime Zork players.
Also, there’s a free text adventure called Zork: The Undiscovered Underground, a short and free "prequel" to this game that's easy to find on the internet and is also a decent supplement to this game.
It only takes about 4-4.5 hours to complete if you've played it before, a bit more if you've never come across it. I hadn't played it since the 90s but still remembered a good bit of it. It's a short game, but it's fun and nostalgic. Even my kids (4 and 6) loved to watch me play it.

This is the last and the best Zork adventure game. The humor is awesome and no one has lived until they have fallen into the bottomless pit (don't forget to save first.). Lots of fun and a pleasant memory of a gaming era gone by.
Zork has always been a fun game, but with the additional comedians and actors, it is hilarious.
If you like 1990's stars (especially the A-Team) you will really enjoy this game. It is not anywhere near as sophisticated or clear video GUI, but the plot is great fun. Use a walk-through to assist with the steps as clues and indicators are in the old version of "Ops, I forget this sixteen steps back and have re-run the steps all over again...", no do it later and complete it. Save often and follow the clues.

This is truly a jem among Adventure games, I consider it a masterpiece.
Style as follows: take Mysts mythical landscapes and fill it with the bizarre LucasArts humor.
Funny and remarkable puzzles, use of different spells as actions, likeable characters. Some of the jokes and phrases made it into my/our running gags years after, not many games can claim such.
I want a sequel to this soo badly. I played other Zorks too, but this one is by far the best.

The nostalgia is strong with this one. Amazing puzzles, a good, deep sense of humor, and beautiful landscapes in an all time classic. Zork Grand Indquisitor was my very first graphic adventure game as a child, and finding it on Steam and replaying it after more than 20 years has been a blast. It's graphics are clearly outdated, but the depth is still there. Runs great with almost no crashes. Very fun game!
So I really like this game. Super cool story, and the mechanics are pretty good for a game made in the 90's. My only issues with this game is there are some glitches in the game and it crashes. As long as you take the game slow and don't try to speed through it, the crashes stay to a minimum. Overall, worth the money for a pretty fun and funny game.

Les personnages sont fabuleux et on retrouve des acteurs des années 80/90 qui se prennent au jeu pour rendre l'aventure plus vivante. les énigmes, sans être d'une grande complexité vous feront malmener vos méninges et le scénario est digne d'un film des Monty Python. Pour finir, enfin une jeu pour toute la famille ce qui est de moins en moins courant aujourd'hui.

I met the developer of the panorama technology for this game when I was working on a similar game back in the 1990s. He told me he was jealous because our tech was better than his. I wish I'd played this game back then, because I would have told him that his game was MUCH BETTER than ours. Our graphics were smoother. But the storyline, the acting, the puzzles; everything else was great for those times.
I especially love that this game does not take itself too seriously. Only a few jokes are outdated. I actually did laugh out loud a few times.

This is a classic of the point and click adventure genre. It has a wicked sense of humor similar to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and it has aged well. I'll admit I may have some rose tinted glasses, but I think that more people should experience this game, and at such a low price, how could you not.
I had GI on gog. When installed I tried to play the game but it had technical issues. Ie the screen would go blank and no options but to quit. I now downloaded it from Steam and it has a mouse issue when playing it. I am done trying to play this game with so many issues as to not enjoy the experience! Hopefully someone will make it run right without jumping thru hoops.

The adventures of AFGNCAAP!
PROS: As far as point & click adventures go, the visuals are wonderful. Most pop out to help display a picture of the areas that you're in. The music does a decent job conveying the mood. The standouts are the voice actors & the FMV's. Erick Avari & Michael McKean deserve special mention for their charismatic, humorous, and charming rolls at Mir Yannick and Dalboz of Gurth, respectively, selling their roles as the villain & the hero's...assistant, I suppose. The humor is also on point, especially for those who are fans of Monty Python styled human mingled in with classic Zork moments.
CONS: As with many games from this era, bringing it up on modern equipment can be lacking. There are little to no option adjustment options, & the visuals have a fair bit of artifacting around them. The major problem would be a bit of a divide between it's puzzles, as the game is a fair bit easier than many point & click adventure games of it's time, but still has the occasional odd puzzle that can throw one off, unless they've been checking everything they can. For me, it falls on the easy side of things. Added onto the fact that, like many games in this genre, it's a one & done experience. A single play through can show you everything in the game, leaving no real reason to go back to it.
FINAL: Zork Grand Inquisitor is a wonderful finale for the Zork series, going back to more light-hearted roots after the surprisingly dark Zork Nemesis. With simple gameplay, solid humor, & a well acted strip, ZGI is easily a game that any fan of point & click adventures should play at least once.

Nun hatte ich endlich die Möglichkeit dieses Spiel wieder zu spielen.
Es hat eine heute nicht mehr vergleichbare Grafik, wer es aber noch von früher kennt, kann sich daran gewöhnen.
Leider ist es keine deutsche Sprachausgabe, aber wer englisch kann, der sieht über diesen "Mangel" hinweg.
Ein typisches Point&Click Game, dass noch zum Knobeln und Kombinieren einläd.

Zork: Grand Inquisitor is a point and click adventure game that allows the player to have a 360 degree view of the majority of the pre-rendered locations. You find yourself outside of Port Foozle where a inquisition has begun. Magic has been banned and those who practice it are being totemized. Your quest is to find three magic items that will restore the empire to it's formal glory and defeat the tyrannical dictator, Mir Yannick.

The last pro is also listed as a con. The reason being, there are many puzzles in this game, most of them have a logically solution, but there are some that just don't make much sense. Fortunately, they are in the minority. One or two of them, however, are absolutely stupid and had me shaking my head in disbelief.
I played this game on the heals of Zork Nemesis, the predecessor of Grand Inquisitor, a much more serious game. It seems to me that some of the players didn't care for some of the adult material in Nemesis because the text versions where some what comical. So the developers took that to mean, 'Lets make this game on the level of slapstick.' Unfortunately, it didn't play out very well... at least in my opinion it didn't.
Along with the over the top comical attempt, you have to deal with some of the most annoying voice actors on the face of the planet. Don't get me wrong, as with the senseless puzzles, these people are in the minority as well but they will in chime in with the same line every time you change position. The part that stands in my mind is when you're in the mouth of the dragon.
At first, I downvoted this game but I had a change of heart. It did keep me busy for 11 hours and I did have some fun playing it.
At the time of this review, Zork: Grand Inquisitor was selling for $5.99. If it weren't for the over the top silliness, I would have liked this game much MUCH better. But if your in the mood for a goofy, challenging game, then this game is for you.

Only issue I have is with mouse sensitivity. The pointer will randomly jump to the other side of the screen. Otherwise, a fun game overall.
A classic you simply got to love.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. It's hilarious to the extreme, clever, and seriously fun. IT is also probably the absolute best entry in the Zork series. I played this so many times as a kid that the discs wore out. I was ecstatic to see that Steam had ZGI available, and even more so to find out that it WORKS! It doesn't crash, there's no errors (that I've found anyway), and it plays smoothly.
PLayed it as a kid, still love it as an adult!
