One of the strangest boomer shooters I've ever played from the classic era. Still, it's pretty interesting in its uniqueness, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to do. This remaster does run smooth and plays great, and at least for me on my modern system, I'm not getting any DOSbox jank.

this game is pretty obscure, but i like it, reminds me a lot of star wars demolition with large open terrain, this game apparently has a story that i dont really care about, in every level you get a briefing thats tied in to the story, which explains the many enemies you encounter along the game then you get dropped in the level with 2 or more weapons, you manuever around large open maps fighting stuff such as robots, mechs and turrets, if you know boomer shooters will you might think this one will have outdated controls, that is not the case, this game was polished a republished by nightdive the best company at restoring classics besides new blood, its very fun
I would have never guess to see this game again in my life. I first saw this on some old CD called over 1000 games in the late 90's. Lots of games mostly shareware and demos that you could order back then. ZAR was one of those games and level 1 Water World was its demo.
I just so happen to only recognize this game via the screen shots and doubted if this was that game. Now this is not some high budget FPS game like today. This is definitely an obscure title. Simple straight forward blow em up. Does this game have a story? Yes but honestly who cares. Some crap about Zones of Artificial Resources or whatever. Again who cares. You mostly spend your time blowing up robots, and facilities. There are a couple of annoying missions like the escort type and there are small factories that constantly build robots that are best destroyed before you run out of ammo to pick up off the map.
One of my favorite things about this game are the physics and super jump. Jump real high and fire a canon and watch yourself float back. Also blowing up the ground and making ravines with the tornado gun was fun. I have to admit dying in the game is not bad. You essentially become a soul and can recon the map. This can be used to your advantage if you fail a mission and come up with a better approach. I am surprised there is very little support for this game. With mods that I have seen for this on youtube this can be one cool game.
Fun for the Nostalgia, but it is not a FPS that has aged gracefully.

Да даже в сравнении со своим вдохновителем в лице Doom игра не выдерживала конкуренции, а ведь между ними разница почти 5 лет. И всё же игра получила какую-никакую популярность на местном СНГ-рынке и таки заслужила право переиздаться в Steam. Достойна игра этого или нет — вопрос открытый, а вот стоит ли простым игрокам щупать это переиздания в 2025-м, мы с вами попробуем разобраться в рамках данного обзора. Приятного чтения в общем ;)

- [b]Z.A.R.[/b] или Zones for Artificial Resources (Зона искусственных ресурсов) представляет из себя очередной Doom-подобный шутер, в котором, попадая на уровень с определённой задачей (вроде уничтожь базу, колонну техники или конкретного болванчика), мы, уничтожая орды инопланетных супостатов, стараемся с поставленной задачей сдюжить. Сохранять же прогресс позволяют между уровнями, заодно рассказывая сюжет...
- Мол, к 2097 году добыча минералов и иных природных ресурсов полностью автоматизирована и контролируется суперкомпьютерами. Планеты, которые разрабатываются для иберия(минерала, нужного для предотвращения загрязнения на Земле), называются [b]Z.A.R.[/b]В центральный компьютер, который контролирует всех горнодобывающих роботов, получает удар метеоритом и из-за чего впадает в неистовство. Он организует строительство боевых роботов, намереваясь взять под контроль как можно больше планет. А мы, будучи очередным супер-пупер-солдатом, должны всё это дело остановить и спасти мииииир.
- Из интересного уровни в игре сделаны в виде целых планет (Да Тодд Говард ты со своим [b]Starfield[/b] опоздал лет на дцать.) карликовых конечно но всё же.Каждая имеет свой уникальный ландшафт который можно не много под себя переделать путём разрушений.На этом интересности закончились и начался...

- Steam-овское переиздания на борту имеет убогий DOS BOX, а это значит вылеты, лаги и прочие неприятности ждут вас, играя в [b]Z.A.R.[/b]
- Также игра не имеет поддержки широких мониторов и запускается в очеееень маленьком разрешении, из-за чего разглядеть что-то вдалеке не представляется возможным.
- Несмотря на то, что игра отказалась от Doom-овской формулы «собери ключи», менее репететативной она от этого не становится. Нет, в начале игры вам может показаться, что игра менее занудна, ведь задачи, что игра даёт, весьма разнообразны, но за 33 уровня, представленных в игре, они будут повторятся не раз и не два. Да, задача с выслеживанием одного конкретного робота на карликовой планете, как по мне, по занудству не сильно уступает поиску дурацких ключей в лабиринтообразном нечто. Да и чем ближе вы будете подбираться к последнему уровню, тем более затянутыми их будут делать.
- Ограничение патронов тоже может сыграть злую шутку. Если вдруг так окажется, что вы остались без них, то можете смело перезапускать уровень, вы его уже не пройдёте.
- Ну и раз это старый дефолтный шутер, куда тут без отвратительного баланса, часть уровней можно пройти пяткой левой ноги, а иные и прямыми руками пройти весьма затруднительно. Так мало того, в начале каждого уровня игра капитально зависает, из-за чего вас уже в начале уровня мобы могут потрепать.

- [u][b]Z.A.R.[/b] — это душная, скучная и, что самое главное, плохая игра. Таковой она была на момент релиза, а в переиздании благодаря техническим огрехам, связанным с DOS BOX, стала только хуже. Если вы в данную игру никогда не играли, то и не стоит начинать, если же когда играли, то данная версия игры вряд ли подарит вам те тёплые чувства, что когда-то дарила, советую поискать её в другом месте.[/u]

Игра сложная. Мне понравилась карта, реально хорошая тема. Крутые пушки. Но ♥♥♥♥♥, эти прыжки, эти горы ебучие, просто ♥♥♥♥♥♥. А эти самолеты ебанные, где миссия с водой, как их ♥♥♥♥♥ уничтожить спокойно можно? Игра требует конечно ремастера, нужен порт на пека. Тут вам и башенная защита и ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ тир от 1-го лица. Игра однообразна, но привыкаешь. Представляю как наши деды в 97 году ахуевали с этой игры, ведь без прицела это ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Музыка, ну это огонь, правда заебывает уже под конец эта долбежка, но музыка очень хороша, роцк! Рубилово полное! Ставлю данной игре 5 баллов из 10. Проходил в рамках ивента Game Killer: FPS, а так бы даже и не узнал наверное о такой игре. Что для меня Z.A.R? Это кнопка "TURBO" и повышение тактовой частоты, это ЭЛТ монитор с далеко не плоской трубкой. В конце концов это мой первый 3D шутер на личном ПК. И играл я на каноничном пеньке MMX 200Мгц.
i dunno how i feel about this. on one hand i want to recommend this game because it's a pretty fun shooter, but on the other i feel like i can't because the game has a few frustrating issues.
one thing the game does is it doesn't retain your weapon inventory between stages in favor of restricting your inventory and forcing you to use weapons that aren't very good for the mission at hand while there are other weapons that would be much more useful but can't be used.
some missions are straight forward where you have to search and destroy stationary targets, other missions require you to find mobile targets that are much harder to find and because none of your targets show up on your map you'll often find yourself wandering the map aimlessly until you find them or die trying.
it's a functional game but it's got a lot of quality of life issues that make it an all-around enjoyable game. Because of these things I cannot recommend this game.

An odd FPS game featuring low gravity, voxel based terrain, robots that shoot projectiles and weapons that span between decent and awful in the context of usability. The planet terrain repeats itself so you can go any direction and make a trip around the stamp sized world while shooting robots. The music is good and the sprite art has a distinct style.
There are about 33 different maps with variety despite being only outdoors. If you like boomer shooters then definitely pick this up, there's no need for any configuration except the graphic settings.
This game is worth buying just for the soundtrack. Really good guitar riffs! The game is pretty fun too. The controls are actually very modern and responsive, and unlike many old games you can just jump in and play with no reading through manuals. It's simple shoot-em-up gameplay, and the graphics are blocky, but the terrain design is pretty cool and you can see it's technically very well programmed. They've achieved something worth playing even 27 years later.

I got a lot of enjoyment from this obscure and odd DOS game. The destructible voxel terrains have a unique otherworldly feel to them. 😌 How did this get on Steam? Has someone from Nightdive also played this from a demo disc 25 years ago? :)
On my first playthrough, I got stuck after few missions, got frustrated and gave up. Then I gave the game a second go on my Pentium III retro PC (thanks for including the BIN/CUE, by the way) and it finally clicked. This is a rather unconventional shooter and you need to know a few things in order to enjoy it:
• YOU HAVE A MAP, it's crucial for finding weapons and ammo and for not getting lost
• the worlds are relatively small and wrap around
• you can turn on the crosshair with backspace and you need to shoot in front of the enemies - all the projectiles are slow
• read mission objectives - they're at the very bottom of the mission briefing page (use page down for quick scrolling), also F5 during the mission brings up the goals
• play on easy - the difficulty is all over the place and even medium can be punishing
• use regular jump - super jump should be used sparingly and its falling damage can be negated by landing into water or on a high ground, shooting some weapons can propel you when in air

Не ожидал увидеть эту игру в стиме, и, разумеется, купил ее. Купил чисто из-за ностальгии - многие игроки не поймут старые игры наподобие этой и к покупке я бы не рекомендовал. Поймут те, кто собирал компы еще в 1999-2001 годах, когда игра шла вместе с видеокартой (так же получил и Механизмы). Если и решитесь покупать эту игру - лучше дождитесь скидки. А так из конкретных минусов я могу вынести однотипные задания и отсутствие маркеров на уничтожение, которые бы очень помогали (хотя бы с 5 единиц показывался бы) - но это все современные придирки - в те времена на это внимание вовсе не обращалось.

Didn't know about this one until I took a look through Nightdive's backcatalogue and picked it up purely on impulse, knowing basically nothing about it, with the last fifty cents in my account - and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised.
It's this mech-suit sci-fi shooter out of some no-name Russian studio back from 1997, and it's got a bunch of cool fun weapons to play with, fully destructible terrain courtesy of a custom engine, a really rockin' soundtrack, it ran perfectly on my machine with no hiccups whatsoever freshly installed, and has one of SOVL menus I've seen in a long time.
You should get this.
Interesting and sometimes even fun, Z.A.R. isn't the type of game you'd expect, but it feels more like a experimental game where you control your own separate character in a sea of an RTS-like battlefield.
You definitely need your rose-tinted glasses for this one.
Feels like someone tried to retrofit Descent into a more conventional first-person shooter. It’s a very bare-bones game, definitely an emphasis on quantity over quality. You’re basically launched into these missions -- hilariously short ones, just a couple of minutes long. Just about as long as it takes you to read through the briefing text right before.
Anyway, there’s nothing interesting in how the game operates. You’re just plopped into these huge barren landscapes filled with enemies. Almost like one of those battle simulator games. Kill enough enemies, and the magical exit appears.
I mention Descent because of how floaty everything feels. Projectiles move slowly and often explode, making aiming and firing a bit more of a calculated operation than just point-and-click.
It’s pretty bad. Play it on easy if you’re forced to play it at gunpoint.

Gra mojego dzieciństwa, kupiona za 10zł jako "gra z kosza przy kasie". Zapomniana przez lata, a jednak się odnalazła. Za dzieciaka, cieszyłem się, że można strzelać i jest prawie jak "DooM". Dzisiaj, cieszę się, że jest na Steamie, bo wygodnie uruchamia się na współczesnym systemie, z automatu obsługuje wygodne sterowanie myszką i dzisiaj jestem w stanie ją w pełni świadomie przechodzić. No i hej, muzyka jest mega super ❤.
This game is very simple, but fun and quite impressive for the time that it came out, but $6 is a crime for this title. I would wait for a sale, and get it for $1, or maybe $2. Great art direction, interesting weapons, and destructible voxel landscapes were the highlights for me.
Z.A.R will put you in the shoes of a soldier from the future who is trying to stop an artificial intelligence that seeks to dominate planets with its abominable technologies and weapons. During the 33 missions, the protagonist is sent to various planets to put an end to this destructive creation. A few things to bear in mind before buying this game are its non-existent aim, which puts you in an atmospheric collection that is almost non-existent and hardly strategic, requiring intuitive aiming and often, in certain areas, the character's jump on the slightest occasion can injure you, once again leaving you to think intuitively about when to jump and when to walk a tightrope. However, its setting and its sound and atmospheric environment turn this unknown title into a reasonable 90s fps for the entertainment of lovers of the genre.

Если развернуто, то по порядку:
-Самый большой недостаток данной игры-это, собственно построение миссий. Поиск десятка врагов на большой карте можно,конечно сделать интересным, но разработчики изо всех сил старались сделать обратное. Не нравиться бегать по большой, пустой локации без миникарты( карта есть, но враги там не отображаются и она зациклена, так что понять, где ты был можно по строениям, а если их нет по ландшафту)? Ну так на тебе непрозрачную воду, где враги могут прятаться. Мало? Сделаем воду ядовитой, чтобы время поиска было ограничено. Еще хочешь? Вот тебе туман и т.д.
-Враги вертлявые, быстро двигаются, а в летающие цели попасть практически невозможно.
-Ограничено кол-во боеприпасов. Казалось бы сохранись и пробуй сколько угодно, но игра не позволяет сохраняться посреди уровня только между ними, и если все патроны кончились на последнем самолете, то всё-проходи уровень заново.
-Система пониженной гравитации. За каким чёртом она вообще нужна, если ГГ получает повреждения приземляясь? Кстати, о хрупкости ГГ-объекты и противники, уничтожаясь, разбрасывают вокруг себя осколки, и да ,ГГ получает повреждения, если случайно на такой наткнется. Логика сюжета при этом становится для меня просто недоступной-зачем было посылать на опасную миссию самого хрупкого человека в галактике?
-Ужасная графика. Вроде, где-то есть то ли патч, то ли версия с улучшенной графикой, но увы в стим такую не завезли.
Есть впрочем ложка мёда-саундтрек. Звучит действительно круто и динамично.
Итог: Худший шутер из всех виденных мной. О чем думали разработчики создавая это издевательство мне неведомо.
Z.A.R. is a fairly obscure first person shooter that not only hasn't aged well but was probably not overly great to begin with. Nostalgia aside, it's a fairly basic shooter with surprisingly good terrain mapping/destruction and not much else going for it. It also has escort missions, which are annoying but kind of unique for the time. The re-release isn't that great either; it's not one of Nightdive's better efforts like Quake. You get a simple dosbox and that's pretty much it.

Присутствует небольшой терраформинг. Но геймплей однообразный, меняются только враги и ландшафт. Уничтожить, защитить, сопроводить на разных планетах. Сопровождение ужасно - медленно и геморройно. Очень сложно убить быстролетающих врагов.
Баланса в главах нет: некоторые уровни легко проходишь, а некоторые можно пытаться пройти полтора часа на том же уровне сложности. Патроны не бесконечные, закончатся - рестарт; поэтому воевать нужно аккуратно.
Передвижение как на планетах с пониженной гравитацией - утомляет очень.
При воспроизведении музыки с начала, игра на секунду зависает - это может быть критично во время боя.
И в это даже можно играть, я прошёл это преимущественно на нормале, но некоторые уровни на лёгком. Но за последний уровень просто куча дизлайков разработчикам. Я раз семь наверное просто не смог добежать до телепорта после завершения миссии (убийства всех врагов).
Если хотите старую однообразную сложную (в плохом смысле) игру, то пожалуйста. Иначе лучше потратить своё время на лучшие игры.

The use of voxels in this is brilliant. Mixing this with an open terrain and lots of mech variety makes this a must play in my opinion. i love the weapons and the music is good. the crusty VGA visuals give it a awesome nostalgic feel to the gameplay. would highly reccomend playing this game if you like early 90s FPS & Mechs.
The sprite animations remind me of rollercoaster tycoon 2 a bit. very impressive for DOS. 9/10

ZAR is a FPS in which you are dropped into an open area and have to gather weapons to blow stuff up.

ZAR is absolutely dreadful. There's no depth to any of it and balance is completely absent. Even the original 1993 Doom is vastly superior in every way, and ZAR was released in the same year as Half-Life! This may actually be the worst FPS i've ever played, and that includes several asset flips and "games" that barely qualify as beta versions. And they want €6 for this?! Wow.
Best game from my childhood, spent days in it
I recommend this game but that's not to say it didn't p-i-s-s me off from time to time. Some lvl's can be very fun to play and others can be very aggravating to the point where I had to lower the difficulty for a select few.(beat this game mostly on Normal) Did finish the game and ultimately was a great experience, especially for old school shooter fans.
--A few things I would like to note--
-The sprite work is absolutely fantastic, all the robots are all unique and have nice animations. Some really cool designs here especially the "factories" that make more robots.
-Autotarget DOES NOT MEAN autoaim!!!, its only good in some situations and can actually really hurt your aim in others ESPECIALLY when your trying to shoot down flying bots, which is the exact OPPOSITE of what your thinking I know. If your not good at leading your shots your going to have a hard time with this.
-The destructible world aspect is neat, but almost never has any impact on the gameplay with a few exceptions like ice and lava planets. To have basically designed the game around full destruction in mind and then not really utilize it much is an odd choice... Could have just done away with it entirely and had more detailed environments.
-The fact you take fall damage in this game is idiotic, it makes the super jump almost useless unless your trying to get up a hill quicker (there is a normal jump also)
-For everybody complaining about how *Space* sends you flying into the sky Id like to ask why in the world you didn't go into the control options and change it? What, every new game you get you just go in with whatever default setup there is without even bothering to look? Really... You can remap the buttons... on pretty much every singe PC game within the last 30 years.... It baffles me that you wouldn't at least check...

Сразу скажу, что покупал я игру из-за чувства сильной ностальгии, но я постараюсь быть объективным в своем обзоре. И так, есть много мнений, хорошая ли это игра была для своего времени, или же все таки нет. В ру есть только один отрицательный обзор, если же вы посмотрите на обзоры всех языков, то обнаружите, что все не так однозначно. Ну да ладно, меня все вышеперечисленное подтолкнуло на мысль, хоть сколько то объективного обзора, но черт возьми, я все равно ставлю лайк этой игре.
1) Графика - да, бывают проекты которые выглядят и получше, даже того времени, но здесь открытая местность, возможность повреждать землю, а так же вода и облака, которые худо-бедно как-то двигаются, все это отражается на качестве картинки
2) Уровни - уровни реально поражают разнообразием... Пока ты не понимаешь, что это все те же яйца, только в профиль. Но ты это понимаешь только к уровню 25, все остальное время ты реально веришь в разнообразие уровней, жаль конечно, что в итоге на них ничего другого не надо делать, кроме как подобрать пушку и валить врагов, а разнообразие по типу "защити колонну", "уничтожь колонну", "сделай так, что бы враги не уничтожили вентиляционные сооружения" это все лишь фантики, которые заставляют тебя либо обойти врага с другой стороны, либо просто поспешить.
3) Сюжет в нем нет ничего выдающегося, кроме очень грамотно написанного текста на русском языке.
4) Оружие - огнеметом, по совместительству самым крутым по моему мнению оружием в игре, дают воспользоваться всего на паре уровней, остальные оружия, под номерами 1,3,4,6,9,0 дают воспользоваться чуть чаще, но все это оружие применяется лишь для того, что бы сэкономить патроны на основном оружии, с которым впрочем тоже есть проблемы, такие как рандомные задевания земли и последующее нанесение себе урона, впрочем об этом позже.
5) Сложность - она здесь крайне не равномерная, некоторые уровни после 20-ого проходятся с первой попытки за 5 минут, какие-то имеют просто зубодробительную сложность. Я всю игру прошел на среднем, кроме 32 уровня, который своей монотонностью и сложностью меня утомил через 30 минут игры.
Итого, не лучшая графика, даже на момент выхода, миссии скатывающиеся к +- одному и тому же действу, скачущая сложность, оружие, которое в большинстве своем нужно вам как собаке пятая нога, сюжет есть, но он не яркий и не влияющий никак на следующий уровень...

Откровенно говоря с графикой можно смириться, у игры есть стиль и она его придерживается, сюжет в шутерах тогда был вообще вещью из ряда вон, так что даже такой сюжет можно считать успехом, оружие, пусть и насильно, но заставляет порой вас изобретать что-то на ходу и идти на риск. Геймплей топорен, где-то не удобен, но он интересен и хардкорен, у вас есть задача, победить врага, а из оружия только говно и палки. Есть много нападок, что мол квака и анрил быстрее этой игры... Ну так обе этой игры были сделаны для сетевых заруб, а эта игра больше про одиночку, поэтому то, она и медленней, лично меня это вообще никак не смущает. Гранатомет, задевающий землю это конечно отдельный вид бесилова, тут я никак не могу защитить эту игру. И самый главный вопрос, посоветую ли я эту игру? Нет, только если из чувства сильной ностальгии, как и не посоветую кваку или анрил, не буду советовать играть и в первый кризис или far cry, все эти игры сейчас покажутся жутко не удобными и костыльными, это надо понимать и ЗАР не будет исключением.
33 levels of frustration and boredom. If you are wanting to check out this game make sure you play on easy difficulty as Normal and Hard are brutal. Enemies can drain your health in the first few minutes making you need to play hide and seek later on. Enemies can shoot you from out of draw distance, the controls are too floaty and I don't know if it was my pc but everytime I "jumped" with spacebar it would rocket me into the air and then take about 16 health from FALL DAMAGE!!!!!! The fall damage alone will kill you faster than most enemies will. Convoy mission (escort ones) are boring and there are 3 in the game, mainly because they take FOREVER to get to the end of the long level. It's not fun. The weapons were interesting to use although its frustrating to only get like 3 weapons in a stage and then scramble the whole stage to get ammo hoping to not get hit and die. There are parts were your gun will kill you because of the way gravity works in this. The only way to get health back is from killing enemies and that maybe gives you between 3-20 health which is maddening. Enemies explode when they die which hurts you, which is fine, but the debris does exploding damage also meaning you have to wait to rush in for health, which sucks in the middle of a big fight. The story is confusing as hell, but I mean its probably more of an excuse for gameplay, damn is it longwinded though.
Some good things the game has going, it still looks good for a game from 98. The weapons were interesting although some were completely useless and never used other than when I ran out of ammo. The terraforming is unique, the soundtrack is great.... and thats about it.
DO NOT BUY THIS!!! Unless you are really into FPS games from the 90's and just want to try it, but man is it pure torture. It's not even worth it at $6.
This one should have stayed buried. I purchased ZAR after recognizing it as one of the many games I played from demo disks in the late 90s, thinking it would be a fun, nostalgic romp. Unfortunately, the game is very frustrating to play. Terrible controls (even if they are arguably intentional), annoying game mechanics (like small bits of rock or debris from explosions causing damage long after the explosion has ended), and repetitive levels make this a game I cannot recommend.
An obscure shooter gem I somehow missed out on. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy classics!
Langweilig und immer Wiederholbaren Aufgaben, indem ich schon mit meinen Geduld gespielt habe.Das Z.A.R. anders sein wollte, hat man gemerkt: Offener als anderen FPS-Shooter Spielen die inden 90's erschienen sind, jedoch hat das Spiel mich nie gepackt.
Doch trotzdem wollte ich nicht sofort Aufgeben, also habe ich bis Level 32 gespielt....Ja, meine Ausdauer war hoch ich denke, das ich sogar mehr als die Hälfte durch war aber keine Motivation mehr hatte.

Fazit:Trotz altes Spiel hatte ich bloß,zwei Spieltechnische Problemen bekommen (Crash) ich spiele gern Retro Zeugs, aber diesen wurde ich nur für jemanden empfehlen, der gerne mal das ganze 100x das gleiche tun wurden und daran noch Spaß empfindet. Ansonsten Nicht!

El juego está dividido en misiones individuales, que pueden ser repetitivas, pero los distintos planetas que visitas no dejan de ser interesantes. Los mapas en general son muy abiertos y usar el relieve del terreno a tu favor es clave para tener éxito.
No hay armas hit-scan en el juego, todas son a base de proyectiles o explosivos y algunas son bastante creativas.
Una crítica que se le puede hacer es que puede llegar a ser frustrante, dan poca munición y hay algunos enemigos muy difíciles de golpear. Además esto no es un source port ni corre nativo en Windows, sino que utiliza Dos Box.

A true classic. I really encourage everyone who is doing millions of frags in second with one finger to try this one and play it on hard. The high jumps will damage you (and most surfaces are at low gravity), no +30 and +50 medikits and no health regeneration, sure enemies are dropping healing orbs (energy orbs) but those will only allow you to barely survive not completely heal you. The game aged but can be run on really high resolutions (the steam is forcing everyone by default to play on small window probably to be 100% sure of compatibility) by changing dosbox configuration file (just keep in mind to keep 4:3 scale). Of course, there are some better games out there, but I found this really refreshing. Sure, the game can get dull, but still there is a wide selections of missions: destroy everything, seek target, destroy convoy, protect convoy, defend location, and surroundings changes significantly as well. Open space, that can be also damaged is usually something rare to see as well.

If you like good ol' games definitely give it a shot.
Back to the 1990's! Z.A.R. is a 21 year old game which uses primitive Voxels like the old Comanche: Maximum Overkill game (which means the graphics look almost exactly the same). A pretty cool technology for the time, but it didn't catch on (although it may see a resurgence one day).
However, unlike Comanche, Z.A.R. is a Doom/Quake style FPS where you have a range of weapons and you shoot various generic robot enemies. As far as games from 1997 go, it hasn't aged so badly (in a large part thanks to the voxels). It's not worth judging the game for not having widescreen support, since it runs in DOSbox. The game even supports mouselook and strafing, so it's moderately playable. Unfortunately for some reason when you jump, you catapult into the air and then take damage when you fall, and there was no way I could see to avoid it. Plotwise, there's not much reason to play this either.
Due to those strange flaws, lack of story, and $6 price tag, it's too hard to recommend, considering other retro games like Quake are free.
i cant say itz necessarily a really REALLY bad game... but it waz quite bad... i know itz an old and i played alot of old gamez but this reallly did irritate me and gave me a headache like u would not believe... easy to run out of ammo and so hard to find at time... way to repetitive whether it just be just plain shooting in a small area or chasing something to shoot... jumping up and on a spot can hurt u... who knew...

К счастью современные процессоры ничем не уступают стареньким интелам, а с лавкой Габена отпадает необходимость в цд роме (что это вообще такое?) И конечно же хвала DOS-эмулятору.
Эта уникальная, трехмерная игра, движок которой рендерит графоний напрямую через логический процессор, минуя видеокарту. Процесс прохождения уровней прост: есть задача на уничтожение либо какого-то нного кол-ва объектов, либо техники. Геймплей довольно олдовый: на уровне разбросаны оружие и патроны. Последних ограниченное количество. Противник бъет больно, целевые объекты взрываются еще больнее. Осколки дамажат очень больно, благо из всего этого выпадают некие сферообразные энергетические "хитпаки"пополняющие здоровье.
Что еще можно сказать об этой игре. Эта игра из 1998 года, которая имеет на борту поддержку VR. Ага, того самого обожемой нового будущего, которое в общем то уже не новое. Технологии равзе что развились лучше. Интересно, какой-нибудь Oculus Rift можно приручить под эту игру, и что из этого выйдет, кек.
Брать или не брать? Тут дело вкусовщины. Если ты старпер, обожающий все старое (обвисшее и дряблое) то однозначно брать и ностальгировать. Ну а если ты из мира будущего, то такой прикол едва-ли будет понятен, я думаю.
Если бы я не застал эту игру тогда, то сейчас бы наверное прошел мимо.
Писать о старых играх задача мало того, что сомнительная, так и еще и непростая на самом деле. Конечно, можно утонуть в собственной ностальгии и рассказывать истории: "О, господи, игра детства, ура" - не обращая внимания на то, что ни вы уже не ребенок, ни те немногочисленные, кто могут вас прочитать. Или даже опуститься до давно опостылевшей и раздражающей фразы - "10 несмешной ерунды из 10".
Так вот, я придумал полезный шаблон для всякого старья. В нем надо ответить на 3 вопроса:
Это было хорошо? Это все еще хорошо? Стоит ли ее покупать и где?
По-моему, несложно.
Итак, было ли это хорошо? Нет, Z.A.R никогда не был хорошей игрой. Этот отечественный шутер вышел то ли в конце 1997, либо начале 1998, т.е. практически одновременно со вторым Quake и не выдерживал никакой серьезной критики. Пожалуй, он не выдерживает критики в сравнении почти ни с одной приличной игрой того времени. Ведь умудряется быть более примитивным чем первый DOOM.
Дело не в сюжете, который сначала подается, как история об очередном взбесившимся ИИ, а в итоге оказывается набором простейших заданий - убить 15-20 роботов, уничтожить 10-15 зданий. А в том, что на больших открытых уровнях нет больше ничего. Никакого интересного взаимодействия с окружением, да и окружения то нет - 10 деревьев на огромную пустошь. Собери патроны, расстреляй врагов, если найдешь - бывает, какой-то один единственный робот, которого по заданию надо обязательно убить, может затеряться в местной территории надолго. Лучше пусть уж коридоры с поиском ключей.
Все еще хорошо? Естественно нет. Большие холмистые локации с лунной гравитацией, героем очень сильно боящимся высоты (т.е. прыгать надо аккуратно) и весьма меткими противниками. Такое скучное, однообразное и неудобное действо не было нормой ни тогда, ни сейчас.
Не могу себе представить ни одного человека, кроме не прошедших через это в свое время, не испытывал бы явного дискомфорта.
Покупать? Если игра очень старая и при этом ее нет в GOG - это уже повод задуматься.
Ну, может вам как и мне неизвестно зачем понадобилась цифровая, лицензионная копия - запускается и работает в стиме? Да и без проблем, только такое "высокое" разрешение как 800 на 600 тормозит. Ладно, притворюсь, что у меня старый, слабый компьютер и запущу в 480 на 320.
А вот кому покупать? Кроме тех людей, которым как и мне не повезло купить, мать его, Z.A.R вместо Quake 2 - скорее всего никому. Даже в целях культурологических раскопок не годится - ощущения как будто люди делали свой DOOM, но затянули с выходом и выпустили что-то совершенно оторванное от реальности, которая ушла намного вперед.
Все подвержены ностальгии, и я не меньше - я не просто так ее купил. Запущу, немного постреляю под неплохую музыку, удалю, через год-другой опять.
Но рекомендовать и хвалить ее невозможно. Вдумайтесь, практически любая старая игра в стиме это сплошь положительные отзывы и не важно хорошая она или нет. В результате нет совершенно никакой возможности отделить классику, в которую до сих пор можно играть и рекомендовать (из отечественных, к примеру, это Аллоды/Rage of Mages, вышли в том же году) от слабого и проходного.
Аналогии ничего не доказывают, но их удобно применять, чтобы выразить мысль. Эта игра похожа даже не на старые фильмы с Ван-Даммом, а с каким-нибудь Майклом Дудикоффым (я надеюсь правильно написал фамилию). Т.е максимально дурацкое, глупое и безгранично наивное зрелище - всё вместе даже, в какой-то степени милое. Кто-нибудь хочет Американского ниндзю посмотреть? Вот он в стиме, в виде игры за 149 рублей.

A meteor impact sends sci-fi humanity's galactic AI rogue and it's up to the player in his suit of power armor to retake the planets in the name of humanity! The storyline is interesting although why the earth military would send a single solider to quell a galactic uprising is questionable, and the shooting has it's moments. It also features a "CD" quality soundtrack, whatever that means. The game has a lot of annoying ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ though which definitely hurt the overall gameplay.

Z.A.R. is a [b]retro FPS from Russia with a sci-fi[/b] setting; an interplanetary AI has gone rogue and you have to stop it. It consists of [b]four episodes divided into eight levels each[/b] and you take the role of a soldier in some sort of power armor with an array of interesting weapons. You’ll get teleported to different planets to deal with the AI’s defense system, and although these locations vary slightly from each other, they feel very similar and some areas are more annoying than challenging.
The enemies you’ll be encountering are mostly boring turrets that can hit you from long distances with high accuracy taking different chunks of your health depending on the projectile they fire. [b]There are no medkits or health items in this game[/b], you have to pick up the energy dropped from destroyed machines or enemies and be quick about it, because [b]it disappears quicky[/b]. Did I mention that shrapnel causes damage? So [b]beware of explosions near you[/b]. There is also some mechs, submarines, tanks and hovering vehicles but you’ll only face them in a couple of missions.
The controls are not very smooth and [b]movement feels floaty[/b], some areas of the game have lower gravity or snow and you will find yourself slipping like the floor is covered in vaseline. The high jump is a double edge sword, as falling deals damage especially if you happen to jump from an unsuspected cliff into a pit. The map serves little navigational purpose, although you can locate certain items in it. Speaking of which, [b]whenever you start a mission you must track down weapons and ammo IN the map[/b], you don’t start with any sort of defense at your disposal which kinda sucks, since most of the good guns may be hidden in the most inhospitable place.
I started on the normal difficulty but got frustrated midgame and switched to easy because some of the terrains in the game are so unforgiving, aiming is terrible, falling and shrapnel damage is ludicrous, ammo is scarce and the missions are repetitive and uninspired. I’d say [b]give this one a go if you’re a hardcore fan of 90’s Doom clones[/b], otherwise you’re not missing much.
Highlights include the music, ocean and lava planets, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gun that fires tornadoes and the cool live action intro.

TLDR: Sort of an unfinished showcase level of depth alpha build on an outdated engine.
Think open world doom1 with mouseaim on large featureless barren islands of ugly brown texture. You get to shoot heavily pixelated robots and solar panels that barely move at all. You constantly run out of ammo and you do not get a melee or freeammo weapon. There are no landscapes or anything to hint at where you must go for objectives. The low gravity causes exaggerated jumping but then you still get fall damage.
This is a cool little gaming artifact of the late 1990s. Coming out a year after BioWare's premier game, Shattered Steel, it has numerous similarities—outdoor maps, deforming terrain, a story about AI gone rogue, a rather tank-like feel, etc. But, it is a little more Quake than Mechwarrior, in that it has a 1-through-10 weapon roster, health pickups, and just-slightly-archaic-for-the-time sprite based enemies.
It's hard to say that it's a better game than the average for the time, but it does have a good sense of focus and style, dropping a lot of cruft that began to appear around this time (e.g., overly elaborate mission briefings and loadout screens), and embracing cinematic cutscenes and a throbbing CD-audio soundtrack.
Also, it's a Russian game about a collectivist industrial AI gone wrong, so that's some neat flavor right off the bat.

[h1]Les plus :[/h1]
- Le gameplay est basique (en même temps, en 98...) mais il y a des petits trucs qui font qu'il est très plaisant à jouer. Tout d'abord la physique, qui est très réussi ! De plus, on se retrouve toujours dans des environnements à faible gravité, rendant les combats biens marrants ! Ensuite, il y a la déformation du terrain, à savoir, quand on tire dans un batiment, le sol ou autre, et bien... Ca fait des trous ! (On peut même se faire un tunnel dans une montagne avec assez de munitions et du temps ^^)
- 10 armes différentes, avec leurs caractéristiques. Pour les avoir, on les trouve sur la carte de chaque mission.
- Une bonne durée de vie, environ une 10aines d'heures, avec 33 missions au compteur !
- Le jeu a une certaine difficulté, même en Normal, donnant un peu de challenge.
- La bande-son est super ! (Bon, y'a une seul musique, mais elle est bien.)

- Devient un peu répétitif à la longue, les missions se ressemblant, ayant toujours le même principe ou presque.
- Des micro-freezes apparaissent quand le musique revient au point de départ...
- Certaines missions sont trop longues, comme l'avant dernière, qui nous demande d'escorter des vaisseaux sur une map hyper grande. Le problème est qu'il y a un nombre fixe d'ennemis, donc si on les tue tous dès le début, bah, on attends pendant 20 minutes.
- Assez dur de distinguer quelque chose à longue distance avec ce genre de graphismes...
- Vendu 5€, je trouve ça un peu abusé, vu l'âge.

It's actually still decent and perfectly playable after 20 years. It's very simple, but for 97 it was pretty impresive, with terrain deforming with explosions and really nice, detailed sprites.
Absolutely not for 5$ tho, it's fine for buck or two - still much better and inifitely more fun than modern Unity asset flips, but 5$ is rip-off. Come on publisher, it's not a Quake or Doom, don't sell it at what basically was release price for this title. Still - surprisngly, fun!

This is an intersting fps from the late 90's. It presents some neat concepts, but ultimently fails to devolop them.
Pros -
Voxel Based Terrain that wraps around like a planet
Shrapnel from enemies can actually cause damage

Extremely sparse ammo

Bottom Line -
This game came out during the same time as Quake II and Half-Life. While the voxel terrain is cool, there's no reason for the rest of the game to be as unpolished as it is. Boring enemies and atmosphere make this game a snooze. If you have it boot it up to see a neat old voxel engine, otherwise just disregard.
Sadly the retro feeling could not comfort me over major issues this game has. The level design is awful, don't get me wrong, it's not graphics or anything, but you feel that by level 2 the devs just sprinkled the maps with pickups, it feels bored and rash. The super jump ability is useless, if you use it, it will hurt you. Firing weapons while jumping will fling you uncontrolably through the sky. Every gun is autoaiming. Ammo pool is minimal. It just is not a really good fps at all...

It's a Russian version of Quake/Doom/Duke nukem, so you know it's going to be a sh!tty knockoff. Basically every level is the game, just a giant open area of hills and valleys, whose color changes on some levels. You run around these hills shooting tanks, turrets, and planes, that's it. Enemies are boring and repetitive. It's super ugly and the draw distance is terrible, as you can't see anything in the distance. The map is terrible and unhelpful. The worst part is the mission design. Most levels you are just supposed to kill a certain number of machines. What this ends up being is you kill 16 of the 20 you are supposed to kill, and spend the next 10 min continuously wandering around the same hills looking for the final 4. Because all the enemies are spread about without rhyme or reason it can be very frustrating. Since the map has no enemies on it, and theres no waypoint or marker on your HUD, and every hill and valley looks the EXACT same without any structures or landmarks, you are screwed. This happened multiple times and feels like lazy design. You use the same 3-4 guns, a rocket launcher, gattling gun, grenade launcher, and annoyingly unhelpful tornado thrower. Enemies take tons of hits to die. Finally after the 5th level of wasting 15 min running around the open area looking unsuccessfully for 1 guy I saw the game for what it is, a lazy Russian POS, like most products from their. It does have destructible environments though. 3/10.
Good old and underrated fps, actually it can looks like a russian version of the first Quake.
i played the demo of this game when i got my first real computer and i kind of liked it back then.
but i forgot about it and just picked it up recently when it came up in a bundle.
it's a nice game and fun to play. it's not unfair but can be quite challenging, after all it's an old school game so don't expect some auto heal or any other of that casual cr4p.
if you remeber this game from the old days then go and pick it up.
if you don't then you might want to skip it.

Lets start with the fact this game is 18 years old. It is a rather weak clone of Doom or ROTT in a quasi open world, which for the time was innovative.
Otherwise if you have played original doom or Rise of the Triad (ROTT), it won't surprise you much, except how strangely the AI behaves.
I got this in a bundle, and I hope you do too. It is not recommended otherwise, not even for nostalgia purposes.

In 1997 I got a disk in the mail labeled 250 Arcade Games, with this being one of the games. It's a fun retro shooter that still holds up well in my opinion. My only complaint is that you jump really high and take fall damage from your own jumps.
Retro game. Spirit of the original doom, but different.

Игра старой механики, когда тебе дают всю карту, враги будут со всех сторон, а на твоей стороне - ловкость и интеллект. Разве что медленновата, особенно на фоне вышедших в следующем году Q3 и UT.

An ancient FPS from 1998 Z.A.R. appears to be anti-green energy propaganda.
In the end however, this game doesn't receive a recommendation due to it's age and the odd choice to not provide the player a cross-hair.
I actually hadn't heard of this game until I saw it on Steam and it looked interesting.
Having played through the entire game now, I mostly enjoyed the game, but it had some quirks I found very annoying from time to time.

[*]The game lets you replay any previously completed level at any point. It also keeps track of what difficulty you beat the level on.
[*]The intro FMV is pretty hardcore.
[*]The "Battle Show" function lets you spectate battles between the robots with 7 scenarios to choose from while some of the badass music plays in the background.

[*]You are way too vulnerable and have to kill enemies to get any health back in extremely small doses. A single hit can usually do double the damage a health pickup from an enemy would give you.
[*]Defense and escort missons.
[*]Enemies are a bit too resilient and accurate. I usually lost most of my health in the first minute of most missions and had to play peek-a-boo with the rest of the enemies, hoping one doesn't shoot me from a mile away past the draw distance.
[*]Anything you destroy creates debris, getting hit by the debris hurts you. This kind of makes sense, but it makes quick maneuvering to health drops a pain.
[*]Many escort missions.
[*]The physics are too floaty and unreliable, you slide around a lot and get knocked around really easily, especially if you're already in the air. Jumping sometimes doesn't work without having to jackhammer the button like a horny monkey.
[*]There are sometimes too many enemies and not enough cover, especially with a specific homing mine enemy.

I have played the demo to this as a kid and I only had 2 levels. Having replayed it now, as an adult, I realise in one of the missions I was shooting everything that moved when in fact some were enemies some were allies :)

go for medium dificulty, easy might be too easy.
I am now 6 hours into the game and i haven't finished it yet.
-1 for the modern age you might argue the graphics is outdated - but you can play it on 800x600 which is more than decent for a game over 18 years old.
-1 you might argue that it can be repetetive at times - some missions are similar to the others
-1/+1 the name of the planets - I think there is one named "pointless planet" and others with name among those names - not much inspiration or puns intended.

Very, very early/barebones FPS with levels that are extremely bland and empty. Think a literal desert, with 5 enemies slowly patrolling around waiting to get shot.
Awesome intro cinematic though, it's delightfully 90's.

I don't know how this game has eluded me for such a long time...I don't know how many of you have played Q.A.D. (Quintessential Art of Destruction) another unknown game, but when I entered to play Z.A.R. my thoughts rushed to that world style of QAD :).

It won't blow your mind, but Z.A.R provides some solid (if simplistic) old school fun, with challenging combat, charming voxel landscapes (that can be deformed with explosions!), and a surprisingly enjoyable soundtrack. Most of all, it's just plain awesome to see such an obscure title show up after all these years.
In 1997, I received a demo disc with an issue of PC Gamer, and on that demo disc was the one-level demo of Z.A.R. The game, even then, struck an impression on me due to its advanced voxel engine and open-concept gameplay. But, every month thereafter I'd look at the various PC game sales sheets in the back of PC Gamer, and I never saw Z.A.R appear there, or ever on store shelves. To my knowledge, it was never released here, and for 18 years I wondered what happened to this game. At least now that curiosity can be put to rest; so after 18 years, how does it stack up?
It's very much a game of its time. It's something akin to Terminal Velocity meets Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri. You play a soldier airdropped into each level. Each level consists of a terrain type, one or more objectives, and ammunition scattered about sparsely over the play area. Missions range in type from search & destroy, defending a point, or escorting a convoy of transports.
How you go about accomplishing your objectives is completely up to your own approach, but the fact that weapons and ammunition are scarce, means that there has to be a bit of planning in terms of your rationing of supplies. Do you waste those rockets trying to down aircraft bombers that have you targeted? Or do you use your machine gun and save the rockets for an enemy spawn-point? Herein lies half the difficulty of the game, and you're never shortchanged, you're always given just enough to approach and succeed however you desire, but it's not a cakewalk. You'll likely be limping along at the end of each mission...
Which brings us to the other half of the difficulty; there are no health pickups save for very minute energy packs dropped by the enemies you fell. This means that you need to be fast, accurate, and keep moving if you want to survive without taking massive amounts of damage with little way to replenish your health-- because the enemies in this game don't whittle you down; a single rocket can easily knock off 75% of your HP. Sometimes, it's almost punishingly unfair when you spawn into a mission with multiple enemies locking you down, meaning you need to be alert and moving before you're even able to get your bearings. Luckily, you don't lose anything by dying and retrying the mission, as your loadout resets to nothing with every new map anyway.
The maps are a mixed bag. Some maps do inventive, awesome things: One map, for example, has the player assaulting a stronghold situated on an island, and the only way to storm it is over thin ice. However, the island's defenses include grenade launching pods, and as you start to assault across the ice, the grenades begin blasting the ice apart (showing off the game's terrain deformation), making it all the more likely you'll fall through into damaging ice-water. Another map has tides that roll in and out, exposing more land and more enemies that were concealed in the water. Yet another has a trench with supplies inside that slowly pumps full of, then empties of toxic sludge, giving you limited windows to restock your ammunition before it fills up again.
But for every exciting angle, I eventually ended up feeling like too many map scenarios were repeated, with only slight variations on a theme. They all end up boiling down to "spawn, walk across mostly empty terrain, scour for ammo, shoot the bad things and keep the good things alive." Which, you know, taken in context of a game from 1997 isn't all that awful. The game ultimately tries to be something more than just another corridor shooter as was so popular for the time. It joined games like Rebel Moon, Terra Nova, and Terminator: Future Shock in being more about objectives and missions than just about indiscriminately shooting-- and it's not like the variety of mission types was anything close to standard at the time.
But, that criticism is based on judging it from a 1997 standpoint. It's no longer 1997. In terms of games today, it's going to feel sparse and empty. It's not easy to aim when all the objects are sprites despite a fully 3D voxel engine. The physics are slippery and muddy (especially so on the ice levels, but that's intended). The maps wear too thin and end up repeating themselves for the sake of making the game longer; they feel like filler. But beyond all those criticisms, there is fun to be had in Z.A.R. The challenge is engaging and rewarding, skirting by with 10 HP and a single round of ammunition left me with my adrenaline pumping in a way that felt like I was able to pull it off due to my own skill and rationing-- not game mechanics designed to keep me from losing. Playing Z.A.R gave me a sense of overcoming challenges, just on Normal, that I haven't felt from a game like this in a long time.
18 years was worth the wait, despite its flaws, and I'm glad to have played it.
Recommended, especially for those who are fans of old-school shooters.

Решил заглянуть в новинки Steam и был приятно удивлён появлению там MadSpace: To Hell and Beyond, но эта приятность не идёт ни в какое сравнение с тем чувством, когда я обнаружил в новых релизах Z.A.R. Это был просто крышеснос! Игра из детства! Я рубился в неё с друганами до одури! Лучший отечественный шутер из 90-х! Оригинальная, с набором нововведений (не характерных для игр той эпохи) и ещё с потрясающей музыкой!
Я не буду советовать новичкам сей релиз. Не поймут современные геймеры этого продукта, думаю. А те, кто играл в Z.A.R. и сами прекрасно знают брать игру или нет. Данную информацию я написал не для кого-то, а скорее для себя. От переполняющих меня эмоций. Братцы, как бы вы знали, как я счастлив увидеть эту игрушку в Steam! Это просто праздник!!! Причём, праздник со слезами на глазах, уж извините за подобные сравнения. Ибо запускаю, играю, и вроде радостно, а с другой стороны так грустно. Грустно, что детство кануло в Лету, что прошла эпоха, в которую я и мои друзья выросли... Ладно, не буду распускать нюни, лучше займусь игрой.
This is my childhood game. It's probably not well known outside Russia, but I think it's one of the best games made in 90-s. It has so many interesting features that I rarely see even in modern games. Voxel landscape, fully destructible, is one of them. Would be nice to also have ZAR2 (known as Mission Pack) which features improved renderer on Windows via OpenGL? I've actually got both ZAR & ZAR2 on CD right here on my desk. Such a nostalgia.
Oh, and it's made by same people who later will make IL-2 Shturmovik.

Купил из-за приступа ностальгии. Просто заколачивают бабло. Не сделано ничего, кроме как запилен лаунчер, который автоматически запускает игру из-под досбокса. Я-то надеялся, что сделали нормальный виндовый режим и поддержку видяхи (в смысле как GOG-издание)... Фигушки. 800х600 тормозит, чего я совершенно не помню в 98-м году, когда я проходил его в 1-й раз.
Можно спокойно скачать из олд-гамес и запускать через досбокс. Кстати, попробую. Может, получится заставить его не тормозить.
1. Запускается через DOS Box, игру не переделывали (как например DN3D).
2. Видеоускорители не поддерживаются, все считает процессор.
3. Соответственно, максимальное разрешение 800х600.
4. Карточек, ачивок нет. ))
Брать только со скидкой 75%, если замучили приступы олдгеймерства или просто по пьяни.
В любом другом случае - проходить мимо, не поймете.
