“More of the same” isn’t always a bad thing & this sequel proves that. It picks up right where the first left off, same gritty sword & sorcery vibe, same claustrophobic dungeons - but everything hits a little harder. While its more famous contemporary, Hexen, leaned into spellcasting and mystical firepower to feel like a dark fantasy shooter, Witchaven II doubles down on the melee brawler side of the formula. You’re still hacking, slashing & crunching through enemies up close, which gives it a raw, visceral charm missing from its peers. The combat is crude but satisfying & the grimdark heavy metal album atmosphere remains intact. It’s not as elegant or ambitious as Hexen, but as a continuation of Capstone’s blood-soaked vision, it’s a solid, brutal dungeon crawler that stays true to its rough-edged roots. I f'n love these games.
Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance, developed by Capstone Software and published by SNEG, is a first-person action game that merges the mechanics of classic shooters with a dark fantasy setting. Serving as a sequel to the original Witchaven, the game follows the knight Grondoval as he seeks to defend his homeland of Stazhia from the wrathful witch Cirae-Argoth, who seeks vengeance for her sister’s death. Utilizing the Build engine, known from titles like Duke Nukem 3D, the game places players in a medieval world filled with dungeons, castles, and eerie forests, combining the exploration elements of fantasy RPGs with the fast-paced action of 90s shooters.
Combat in Witchaven II forms the core of the gameplay, offering a mix of melee and ranged options. Players can wield swords, axes, and magical staffs, and the game introduces mechanics such as dual-wielding and carrying a shield alongside a weapon, which adds tactical depth to engagements. Despite these options, some players find the controls cumbersome and occasionally unresponsive, which can make battles feel frustrating rather than thrilling. Enemy AI, while functional, often falls into predictable patterns, resulting in repetitive encounters that emphasize sheer numbers over strategic challenge.
The game’s aesthetic contributes significantly to its atmosphere. Its dark, gritty environments, from dimly lit dungeons to crumbling fortresses, immerse players in a foreboding medieval world. While the graphics were impressive for the mid-1990s, they appear dated by modern standards, though this adds a nostalgic charm for fans of retro games. Sound design complements the visuals with effects that enhance the tension and drama of combat, including clashing weapons, distant screams, and the ambient hum of magical spells, helping to reinforce the game’s grim tone.
Storytelling in Witchaven II is present but secondary, primarily serving to frame the action. Grondoval’s quest against Cirae-Argoth provides motivation for progression, but narrative development is limited and often conveyed through short cutscenes or in-game text. While the plot offers continuity for players of the first game, new players may find the story less compelling compared to the emphasis on combat and exploration. Still, the overarching theme of revenge and supernatural threat gives context to the battles and environments, maintaining engagement throughout the campaign.
Despite its flaws, Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance remains a noteworthy entry in the era of 90s first-person shooters. Its combination of melee-focused combat, dark fantasy aesthetics, and the retro charm of the Build engine creates a distinct experience that stands apart from conventional shooters of its time. While it may not satisfy players seeking fluid mechanics or advanced AI, it provides nostalgic value and a unique blend of action and fantasy that will appeal to fans of classic gaming and those interested in exploring a darker, medieval-inspired world.
Rating: 7/10
The first one wasn't as bad as I expected. Still kinda bad, but playable.
This one? Can't even pass the first level on the easiest setting.
this game is garbage. first one was too but not nearly as bad as this one. this game is far more glitchy, somehow uglier, and the level design is downright laughable...and not in a good way, more like a pulling your hair out kind way. just skip this. you wont be missing anything lol
3/10 hasnt aged well at all
Witchaven, a classic from 1995, one of the first titles powered by Build Engine.
The witchaven sequel delivers 15 levels in an improved but rather short form. The ending provides a premise for a sequel that unfortunately was never realized due to the closure of the creators at the time. New creatures and battles to be carried out, but with similar flaws to the first one in its delivery to steam.
Such a guilty pleasure! Such a clunky, clumsy, forgettable 90s farce! My favorite thing about this beloved nostalgic nightmare of mine is the sound effects. They will always deliver to my ears, especially the coughing death and the murmuring floating-Demon-Old-Hag rumblings. So glad to find it on Steam!
This unfortunate attempt at a high-fantasy-melee-first-person-Doom-clone has the distinction of being released too early and being over-matched by Quake and Duke Nukem. In a strange way this game was a way I could make "Dungeons and Dragons" cool to so many of my more "popular" friends back in mid-adolescence.
Discovering Witch Haven 2 in Electronics Boutique at Baybrook Mall back in the day was like finding Conan the Barbarian in the discount rack at a local Stop'n Go. This Game was 2nd tier back in the day and remains the bastard-child-Doom-wannabe of the Dungeons and Dragons variety with a touch of Robert E. Howard and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The horned helmets, the bizarre "Old Hag" animated mini-bosses, the bloody and graphic traps you could fall in. Don't bother with the Bow and Arrow, go for the two-handed sword whenever you can, because the physics SUCK!
The gory sound effects are some of my favs in any post-Doom FPS. This game is a relic, a time capsule into an age of desperate software developers trying to replicate the success of those guys in Texas....
its a load of ♥♥♥♥ to play, but funny to look at.
Way more difficult than the first game. I had the biggest difficulties in the first map and getting used to the new enemies, died a few times to find the needed power-ups. There are not many levels and this feels like an expansion pack to the first game with tougher enemies. Play only if you thought the first game was ok.
Very bizarre game, meme game from the 90's
Purchase at your own risk
You get more spells, more potions, fight bigger, badder enemies, and get the better weapons faster. It's a lot more action packed than the previous, with generally better level design, although it's way longer despite being 10 levels shorter (25 vs 15). I think it's very much worth it.

Unlike with the first game I actually had this game as a kid but I hardly played back then and now I can tell you why. You take damage for seemingly no reason (there are hitscan enemies with magic) and even the small things such as sounds are annoying. One thing I found that surprised me is that they ripped off the grunt the doomguy makes when your trying to open doors but its actually a wall. Don't even buy this game as a curiosity and buy the Heretic/Hexen games.
COMOMOLA
Can't believe this finally got a steam release! I used to play these two games endlessly when I was younger. Nostalgia overload!
A fun game where anything weird that happens it's 50/50 whether it's a bug or intentional. Weapons will miss. Menu lag. Dead ends on maps. Unbalanced. Glitches. Practically invisible death pits. For some reason a fatal arrow deathtrap was avoided with a fire resistance potion. Still, the entire design is positively retro and fun if you don't take it seriously.
Witchaven 1 was a wee bit better overall but this time you can have super weapons and humans have replaced a lot of the monsters.
Play with BuilldGDX !
Turns the sluggish DOS port into an HD remake with better mouse controls and improvements.

Nepřítel zapadne do zdi.
Chug healing & magical potions, and hack & slash (...and hack & slash, and hack & slash...) your way down corridors, across scaffolds, through windows, and into the lava-filled heart of Hell in 'Witchhaven II' -- an overall decent magical retro fantasy melee FPS.
An unsung Build3D refugee, this title is a straight port with no way to modernize controls like mouselook -- that I could figure out -- so, caveat emptor.
It's sprite-based, but never really takes advantage of what you could do with Build. The levels seem more like a series of pods, instead of any cohesive structure -- and rolling between arenas gets a bit stale, especially after you've dispatched everyone.
Probably a fun buy if all of the above is your bag.
