[h1]Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Old but still a solid RTS[/h1]

I jumped into Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Anniversary Edition mainly out of interest in the Warhammer universe, and also because I wanted to revisit the good old RTS formula the way I remember it from back when I played Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

The game really feels like a classic from that old-school RTS era. Base building, resource management, map control, and constant clashes between armies — everything is simple and straightforward. The battles look satisfying, and the factions do a great job capturing the Warhammer universe’s atmosphere.

That said, the game’s age definitely shows. I had to mess around with some game files just to fix the screen resolution for modern displays. The interface and some mechanics also feel dated, but if you’re looking to revisit a classic RTS without too many complicated systems, the game can still deliver a good time.

Classic RTS - I played the GOTY version before the newest updates and collection, and I had to install some mods before to improve the camera and so on. But overall it's a great representation of Classic 40K for those with a love for the series story telling and characters.

My life partner often mocks 40K's for its 'dumb overly dark tune', and while I often shrug at the sillier aspects of 40K myself - I find these games do the best job of taking introducing somebody to the fantastic setting without making anything overly absurd of comically bleak for the pure sake of it.

I was pulled into the series by Thunderpsyker and TTS five years ago, and these games have still remained my eternal reference and home for everything related to 40K.

Give it a shot if you want a classic RTS series with great faction variety and campaigns. You may need to fiddle around to get online working right and find groups to play, but that's hardly an ask given how popular 40K and these games really are.

Fingers crossed DOW 3 gets a proper remaster and fixes it needs.

Juegazo, si te gustan los RTS y el universo de warhammer 40k este juego te engancha.
Cada facción es completamente diferente a las otras y todas tienen sus detalles y cosas que las hacen especiales.

PERO OJO, el juego tiene algunos bugs visuales y problemas si lo usas en pantallas modernas, tienes que ajustar la resolución de forma manual desde la carpeta del juego. Además puede sentirse viejo y simple si vienes jugando juegos super modernos. Pero luego de un rato te acostumbras y empieza a gustarte eso.

Barely got into the game and I've been addicted to its Skirmish mode from the get-go! Can't wait to resume the Campaign!

And this is still just the base Dawn of War experience. I've yet to tackle the Expansions and the factions that they bring. Man, do I wish I had met this masterpiece back when it actually first launched!

Tras enamorarme de Dawn of War II y descubrir el universo Warhammer 40.000, decidí volver al origen y jugar al primero de la saga. Y fue todo un hallazgo: si el II me atrapó con escuadrones y táctica, el original me conquistó con su grandiosidad. Batallas masivas, construcción de bases, gestión de recursos y un RTS clásico que combinaba estrategia y guerra total de manera perfecta.

Una de las cosas que más me impresionó es cómo cada facción se siente única de verdad. Los Marines Espaciales no se juegan como los Orkos; los Eldars se mueven y atacan de otra manera, y cada unidad tiene personalidad y funciones claras. Esa diferencia hace que cada partida se sienta distinta dependiendo de quién controles o a quién te enfrentes.

Y no puedo dejar de mencionar las muertes sincronizadas, una auténtica marca de la casa: cuando tus unidades o las enemigas mueren al mismo tiempo de manera dramática, con animaciones perfectas, te hace sentir la brutalidad del combate y da un toque cinematográfico que todavía hoy me sigue fascinando. Es uno de esos detalles que definen el estilo del juego y lo hacen memorable.

La combinación de gestión de bases, producción de unidades y batallas masivas crea una sensación de poder y control que engancha desde el primer minuto. Cada decisión estratégica importa, y cada victoria se siente épica. La historia, la ambientación y la música refuerzan esa sensación de guerra galáctica interminable.

Para mí, Dawn of War I no solo fue un juego que disfruté: fue la experiencia que definió mi amor por los RTS y por Warhammer 40.000. Más masivo, más épico y más memorable que cualquier otra cosa, con facciones únicas y momentos de combate que aún hoy me parecen insuperables.

Game is certainly dated. The minimap doesn't fit right, you can't shape aspect ratio to screen properly, and it doesn't play nice with multiple monitors or tabbing out. The multiplayer scene is also gone, so unless you have a friend to directly invite for CPU Skirmishes, all you've got is the Campaign. At least it's a good campaign! Will be moving on to the expansion campaigns soon.

Dawn of War is a great game. This is not a review of the game itself, but of the practices of its developer/publisher.

Here we have yet another good old game where they spitefully removed LAN play (see also: Age of Empires 2). I hope these companies learn a hard lesson that even Gabe Newell himself wasn't able teach them: "piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem".

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Anniversary Edition es un ETR de la vieja escuela: construyes base, gestionas recursos, produces unidades y conviertes el mapa en una alfombra de explosiones, gritos y “gloria” imperial (o herejía, según tu dieta de fanatismo). Es estrategia en tiempo real sin complejos: ritmo agresivo, escaramuzas constantes y ese sabor a “un error y te borran del planeta”.

La primera impresión es clara: esto es un clásico con colmillos. Se siente como una guerra total en miniatura, con facciones que no vienen a negociar. Y sí, es violento, épico y con una ambientación tan cargada que casi puedes oler el incienso… mezclado con sangre y aceite de motor.

Lo Bueno:
✅ ⚔️ ETR clásico con construcción de bases: directo, rápido y brutal, sin tutoriales “motivacionales” eternos.

✅ 🌌 Ambientación Warhammer 40K potente: guerra, fanatismo y ciencia ficción oscura bien servida.

Lo No Tan Bueno:
❌ 🏆 0 logros: tu dopamina de checklist se va a quedar sin trabajo 😴.
❌ 👥 Comunidad activa pequeña (86 jugadores): encontrar partidas puede sentirse como buscar reliquias sagradas en un basurero orbital 🙃.
❌ 🎥 Se nota “clásico” en lo visual: funciona, pero no esperes que tu GPU llore de emoción 😬.
❌ 🩸 Gore/violencia: si eres sensible, este no es un “simulador de abrazos” precisamente.

Dawn of War - Anniversary Edition sigue siendo de esos ETR que te enseñan “a la mala” por qué el control del mapa y el timing importan. Es un juego con personalidad, violencia estilizada y una ambientación que te aplasta con el peso del universo 40K. No te pide permiso: te manda al frente.

Ahora, seamos controversiales: que tenga 8563 recomendaciones no es casualidad… pero tampoco significa que sea para todos hoy. La comunidad activa de 86 jugadores lo vuelve más de nicho en multijugador, y el apartado visual ya no vende humo. Aun así, si te gusta la estrategia en tiempo real con construcción de bases y guerra sin poesía, esto sigue pegando durísimo.

Ótima porta de entrada para o universo de Warhammer 40K. O jogo não é complexo, é bem focado no combate e captura de pontos de controle. A história é interessante, tive vontade de passar todas as fases para saber qual era o motivo de tudo estar acontecendo. O jogo é antigo mas se mantém divertido até para os padrões de hoje. Dawn Of War Anniversary Edition is a sticky plaster on top of a game that visibly creaks under twenty years of not much being done under the hood. It'll still run in operating systems that Steam doesn't support, the graphics options reek of legacy support and the install is about as intuitive as programming a VCR at times.

For a small amount more, you can get the Definitive Edition that is just one install, has Steam Deck and Mod support and wasn't basically given to everyone who had owned the game once in it's lifetime for bugger all, since it was purely Relic re-re-re-repackaging Dawn Of War Gold with it's expansions. Again.

Класична стратегія в реальному часі, що ідеально передає жорстокий дух всесвіту Warhammer 40K.
Замість сухої економіки - контроль територій, постійні сутички та агресивний темп. Кожна фракція відчувається унікальною, а бої виглядають важкими, кривавими й безкомпромісними.
Навіть через роки гра тримається завдяки атмосфері, музиці та сюжетній лінії!
Всього тут 11 місій, але проходячи їх - Ви отримаєте нереальні емоції і задоволення!
Завдякуючи не байдужим, можна додати розширення на весь екран а також українізатор.

П.С. Найкраща RTS від мого дитинства і до тепер, стратегія де війна справді відчувається!

Поиграв спустя многие годы, понимаю что это скорее всего одна из лучших RTS за все время, с золотой механикой, которая до сих пор хороша, не смотря на уже довольно значительный возраст игры. Relic большие молодцы, жаль только что из-за большой тяги к экспериментам вторая и третья начали развиваться куда-то не туда. Надеюсь, что в четвертой части будет все как и надо, по крайней мере в трейлерах все выглядит очень даже неплохо. Ждём-с

Cult Classic. If you love older RTS games and have never played this, do it. Squeeze the trigger. it's worth every penny. I got 46.5 hour out of the first game of the collection. A walk down memory lane. Far enough in the past that the story was new, maps challenging. Very fun. Going to play the first expansion right now. 2 Thumbs Up. Even with the dumb troop movement. Just go with it.

Issues with sound though, hate to say. Sometimes the game sound just doesn't play. then I spend 30 minutes doing the whole troubleshoot tree to figure out what it is this time. I do notice that a single file continues to not download and validate properly. Maybe the root? who knows. either way. I can plug headphones in and it plays fine. Probably a "Me" problem.

It's a game I always heard good things about, but all I experienced was an annoying game where I had to constantly click through every unit to keep them topped up and fully upgraded, and if one died bringing them back was long due to both recruitment and then ALSO upgrading them again. No, I played it through, liked the story, I guess the sounds weren't bad, but otherwise didn't enjoy it. Also rife with bugs like the bug which loading a savegame caused the music to die forever, or to stay paused for too long broke a cutscene to last infinitely.

I love the DOW games, yes, even 3 playing as SM :P, but realised for the first time this evening, there's a problem in the intro video for the first game sadly :(... Drop pods, would not slow down to the extent they did in the cig video, completely neuters the impact concussion damage, this would NOT please Him, or splat loads of the dump Orkz in the process, it's heretical tbh :(
