cool tanks, cool art, about 5x more bullets than I expected, pretty sick man
It's... fine? I guess? There are probably a lot of way better arcade tank games on Steam but if you're a fan of this genre I suppose it's a good way to kill an hour or two for a fair asking price of 3 USD or less. I wouldn't recommend it but it isn't all bad.
I did enjoy it, but it's very barebones, and a lot of little things frustrated me. First and most importantly, the game has no controller support so I had to hook up a mouse and keyboard just to play on Steam Deck, and literal tank controls on WASD is awkward as ♥♥♥♥. The music starts from the beginning every time you die or reset and that makes it get annoying fast, especially when you realize that some songs are a lot longer and more interesting than the short levels allow time for. The enemy tank and turrets can see you from WAY off-screen before you even have a chance to fight back, so that feels unfair, but I guess it's evened out by the fact that they're too dumb to figure out how to drive around walls, and often get stuck in places where it's easy for you to just peek a corner and cheese em til they're dead. It's also very frustrating that with only 3 hit points to your name, you can't even tell when you're getting hurt unless you look at the tiny health bar in the top left of the screen, as there is no visual or audio feedback when you get hit.
On an unrelated note, the final boss is some like, weathered and destroyed version of the tank you play as that can't even fight back, and the achievement for winning says "are you proud of yourself?" so I guess there's maybe some deep symbolic meaning to Voxel Tanks that I'm missing.
Voxel Tanks
A Pleasant Top-Down Tank Game
Voxel Tanks is a top-down shooter where you play as a tank, and face off against enemy tanks with gameplay that reminds me of the tank minigame from Wii Play. You have two weapons, missiles and a machine gun, which will aid you along the way, with the three lives you have each level.
The game features 20 levels, including 4 bosses that can prove a small challenge if you aren't careful. Most levels require you to kill all enemies present while some task you with avoiding obstacles and making it to the end.
The biggest issue this game has is how enemies fire their projectiles. It's based on the refresh rate of your monitor. The faster your monitor's refresh rate, the faster the enemies fire, which can make for an unpleasant experience with higher refresh rates.
The music is pleasant though, making the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.
Other than that, I recommend this game when it's on sale, especially for those who feel reminiscent of the Wii Play days!
Gameplay seems a bit unfair and for that reason I do not recommend.
insgesamt in ordnung.
It's a totally playable generic tank game with voxel graphics and great 8-bit style music. All the levels are open so you can just beat the bosses to get the achievements if you want. I played through all the levels and only found one of them challenging. If it's an open area the tanks will never hit you if you strafe. Most of the bosses are pretty cool even though they're easy, but the final boss is just a single tiny tank that is a normal enemy. I guess it's supposed to be a joke but it's totally disappointing and almost ruined the game for me. While not terrible I see no reason to ever play it again but for a sub 1 hour game it's not bad.
I'm not really sure if Voxel Tanks is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself.
Voxel Tanks is a really bare bones, basic 2D top down shooter with the titular "Voxel Tanks" which really look a lot to me like they just borrowed them from an asset pack, but you know, maybe they didn't. You drive your voxel tank asset around an arena, dodge stuff that's shooting at you, shoot at other tanks, and ask deep questions about why you're wasting your time with such garbage, low effort Russian shovelware.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game assets are fairly mediocre/low quality which fits with the idea they weren't developed by the game creator... they look like they're "just reasonable enough" to go on sale as part of an asset pack. The issue of asset flipping aside, ultimately the quality of these assets is low and low quality always makes for a less than optimal gaming experience.
The game features lazy low-polygon voxel "Minecraft"-like voxel "art", making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. A lot of amateur developers see Minecraft's success and assume it's because it looks bad, not because it had unique and appealing game mechanics, and they try to emulate the success without understanding it. It also happens to be easy, and doesn't need any proper talent in terms of game development/graphic artists etc. That's why reviewers are faced with so many of these terrible games with confrontingly bad graphics. Developers must learn that Minecraft succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them.
Bewilderingly, the game doesn't include proper audio controls, so you can't turn off the annoying sound/background music, you'll need to alt+tab out and stop it using the Windows sound mixer. This is obviously not okay and it's unclear why the developers chose not to include this basic feature.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Voxel Tanks is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
What I Liked
I got a 50% discount coupon for this game—which made an already inexpensive game cheaper—so I decided to buy and play it. I certainly had fun with this game playing thru the majority of the levels. The levels introduced mechanics appropriately and each level felt different. The voxel graphics were also enjoyable and added to the feel.
Complaints
The turret's fire rate is based on your monitor's refresh rate. So since I was playing with 120Hz the turrets were shooting two times as fast. This made some of the levels extremely difficult and some impossible. So if you are planning to play this game, I suggest temporally lowering your refresh rate to 60Hz. This makes the turrets shoot as fast as they were intended making the game much more fair and enjoyable.
The boss AI is simple and predicable making the bosses extremely easy. I was able to beat all the bosses either on my first or second try. This is great if you are quickly trying to get the achievements but makes the bosses boring.
Overall
Before I edited this review, I didn't recommend this game because of the unfair turret fire rate. However, if your willing to temporary change your refresh rate down to 60Hz the game becomes much more enjoyable. Because of this, I recommend this game.
I always enjoy playing random small games like this just out of curiosity, or just so happens to be in a bundle including another game I'm interested in. And in terms of random small games, this one is okay. There's not exactly a lot of character to this game but it was enjoyably difficult, at least for me. Most of the levels blend together as their is not much of a change in scenery but the few levels where it at least changed the formula a bit was fun.
Like the last few bosses, (I didn't really like the first) they were kind of fun but not exactly difficult so it wasn't too challenging but it was at least different from all the other levels. There's also a couple of levels where your main objective isn't just to kill all the enemies, but to just to slip by the rocket turrets and make it to the end, which I liked far more than "kill all the red tanks" type levels.
Also there are very few enemy variants so there's not much to distinguish other than enemy placement and box placement. And the enemy AI is very basic, they will go on a set path until you are in their line-of-sight which is just any space where there is nothing in the way of you and the tank. Doesn't matter if the tank was facing the other way, it will go into pursuit no matter what. Except that pursuit is go in a straight line towards you endlessly, even if there is geometry in the way so they will often get stuck. So usually it is just getting them stuck on the corner and shooting the very side of their tank that is sticking out. But when that isn't the case, it can be fairly challenging and sometimes engaging. Sometimes.
$3.00 is a fairly steep price for how bare-bones this game is but anything just under that I would say is fine for this game. If you're a weirdo like me that like playing random small games that look funny, then you might, maybe, probably enjoy this game.
P.S. I forgot to write this because I was sleep deprived, the cursor, the thing you aim with, will go under every object in this game. Tanks, boxes, turrets, more tanks, so that is quite inconvenient and something to remember.
Certainly one of the top-down tank games on Steam
Trailer shows how the game works: it's a top-down tank game. WASD controls the tank, mouse aims and shoots. I think there is no gamepad support.
You have infinite number of ammo in your two weapons, cannon and heavy machine gun, the former just shoots slower and heavier.
It's mission-based. There are 20 missions, usually the task being to kill all (or a certain number of) enemies or the boss to proceed. I *think* there are also survival levels, where you just have to get to the finish, but I found those to be impossible.
The thing is, the tanks and turrets in my game shoot about twice as often as the ones in the trailer. I think this might have to do with playing on 144 Hz monitor (a thing that incidentally came up in another game recently), so perhaps the firerate is tied to refresh rate. Thus, it was impossible or at least incredibly difficult to pass those turrets without being hit.
You last 3 hits before death, so, I ended up skipping the levels where turrets are invulnerable.
Gameplay otherwise
Enemies include tanks, big tanks, turrets of both fixed and aiming kind. There's also several bosses, and level hazards include mines.
All levels are unlocked from the start.
Technical issues
Besides the incredible fire rate of enemies, I only noted that there's no sound effects. That's an odd feature to omit for an action game.
Also, lack of controller support is unfortunate for a tank game, even if I didn't miss it.
Mediocre snack
Game can be completed very fast if you only care for achievements, for you get one for beating the training and all boss levels. Personally, I spent about 45 minutes. There's little replay value.
It's an okay game but for its price, I'd expect a bit more, like more complete features. You might enjoy it on sale though.

polecam!
0,5,10,15,23 and 5 minutes .
It *would* be a good game if it was more fleshed out. The "music" is super annoying and doesn't actually add anything to the game, the AI is seriously dumb and the steering isn't quite right either. Again, it *would* be a good game if it was fleshed out much better.
I will try it again with no sound at all, because that might make it less painfull to play. The "music", which it kind of isn't, really makes me want to just quit.
Give it a miss, even at a reduced price. The game is just too simple. It's pretty much just a student project
Anyway, this game is good for its price, but:
1. No gamepad support :(
2. Very slow interface
3. Very easy bosses, which have simpliest AI
4. All levels openned
Respawn and get rocket in my face - done
Respawn and explode by bomb in 5 seconds - done
Almost finished level and get rekt by last little one tank - done
10 rockets out of 10
hard, but fun
No controller support.
This game is incredibly difficult but that's not what makes it bad, the only reward for getting through the painful challenges is more similar challenges, the game also should have but sounds in for shooting and getting hit the latter making it very hard to instantly know if you've been hit . still this is better than most of the lazy garbage on steam if there was a slightly negative rating I'd give it that
I think this is a great first game from a female developer. Let's support girls' STEM pursuits.
Usually I'm not really into hardcore games, but this one is fun (especially for that price kek). Some levels are some kind of tank sniping, some are like "run for your life and try to shoot accurately at the same time". The visuals are really simple, but look good. Plus, I know that this is the first published game of a solo developer, so it feels nice to support them with this purchase. Good luck with future projects, dev!
This isn't a bad game but it is unbelievably difficult and because of that I don't think I can recommend it. Not just because of the difficulty being very hard, but because it often feels unfair.
The game doesn't have very much in the way of instructions and no tutorial but there is a tiny area at the start to practice driving and shooting. Other than that it doesn't really tell you anything. There's no story or objective listed anywhere, you pass each level by killing the tanks. I think you have to kill all the tanks to pass a level but am not 100% sure on that because one time I think I got to the next level without killing them all.
As far as the gameplay it's alright but dodgeing enemy attacks is very hard and sometimes impossibly hard. As a tank you can't strafe side to side so you'll die a lot trying to figure out the best way of avoiding enemy attacks. There are 20 or so levels and you can get through them all in an hour probably.
There is no HUD or interface which makes things a bit confusing. I wish there was some sort of indicators for the number of enemies left or at least something. A map or some sort of view of the map before playing wouldn't hurt either. A map or HUD are not required but I think it would be nice to have something more to the game screen.
One thing I can't say enough good things about is the soundtrack to this game. It's absolutely amazing. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend the game, if the soundtrack was available I would definitely recommend that. Unfortunately it does not seem to be available through the Steam music player so if you buy this game you don't get access to the soundtrack on it's own.
My "not recommend" is very light here. This gme feels like it's missing something, like when you're making some food and you taste it and it feels like it could use a pinch of salt, and after you add that salt it tastes great. This game needs just an extra pinch of game dev salt I think. Something feels just slightly off and I can't put my finger on it exactly. Give this a shot if you want, it's very cheap but it's extremely difficult as well. Some people may enjoy it, I found it to be a bit too hard in an unfair sort of way.
You can't go wrong with this fluid and very challenging single player tank game which offers you 20 levels of action for under a dollar!
Watch my "First Play on Launch Day!" first impressions review right HERE:

I scored this game at an impressive 84%, a score greatly helped by this game strong value and fluid and crisp controls. Highly recommended!
