Breaks my heart this one’s no longer available. Insane ideas, makes Sonic “the blue blur” look like a joke by comparison. Puzzles kinda got in the way a little, but… keeping the high score for originality & everything it does right! Here’s hoping there’s a Velocity 3 in the future &/or company/devs are doing well 👊🏻
Zbyt skomplikowana. Pierwsze dwadziescia pare poziomów to tutorial. Myślisz, że już to ogarnąłeś a tu gra dodaje coś nowego. Irytujące.

Velocity 2X situation is just sad. Horrible sales, game breaking bug on release that wasn't fixed for a year, delisting in 2021, even sequel got buried under abysmal sales of V2X. At least FuturLab found success with PowerWash Simulator years later.
So, how is the game? Actually really good, fun shootemup with snappy platforming, cool art and chill soundtrack.

First time I see an XP wall and it comes after ~30 levels.
Worst mechanic in a game for a casual player. If you want you can just make the levels more difficult, but making me repeat them after I finished them is just annoying.
Tout d'abord, je précise que si j'ai peu de temps de jeu sur Steam au moment où j'écris ces lignes, j'ai beaucoup joué à Velocity 2X sur PS Vita par le passé.
Ce jeu propose un gameplay original alternant shoot'em up et plateforme que je trouve vraiment très sympathique, et les graphismes sont simples mais très agréables, avec une direction artistique très stylisée et réussie.
Ce jeu n'étant plus disponible sur Steam, j'ai dû me le procurer sur un site de vente de clefs que je n'apprécie pas, mais c'était la seule façon de pouvoir y jouer sur le Steam Deck.
J'ai vu pas mal de commentaires négatifs indiquant que le jeu était bon mais qu'il avait différents problèmes techniques (problèmes de mappages de manette et bug empêchant de charger le niveau 9). Je voudrais donc apporter mon témoignage pour dire qu'il fonctionne parfaitement bien sur le Steam Deck. Le jeu propose d'office un mappage de la manette qui fonctionne bien, et je confirme que je suis allé jusqu'au niveau 10 sans aucun problème.
Je conseille juste d'ajouter la souris sur le trackpad pour gérer la popup de configuration qui se lance au démarrage et également, dans cette même popup, de modifier la résolution (sans quoi vous aurez une image écrasée).
J'ai partagé mon mappage de la manette si cela vous intéresse.
C'est dommage que le jeu ait été retiré de Steam (j'imagine que c'est le choix du développeur à cause des problèmes techniques signalés), car c'est un bon jeu qui mériterait juste une petite mise à jour.
Dans tous les cas, si vous jouez sur Steam Deck et que vous avez l'occasion de le prendre sur une plateforme de clefs, vous pouvez y aller !
Very fun gameplay with decent amount of replay, as you'll be tempted to complete each mission with the maximum possible score. Can also be played in short bursts as the plot in non-intrusive, and each individual mission does not last for more than five minutes.
In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated games in the last decade. It's like if Galaga and Metroid had sex and gave birth to a hybrid that focuses on speed-runs. It's incredibly unique and there hasn't been a game like this since it came out.

A quick side scroller, which I just recently learns becomes quicker depending what frame rate your monitor runs at. It is OK, but yeah, which they didn't develop the game based on the frame rate since some levels were a lot harder to get through.
La prima ora di gioco mi ha stupito assai positivamente. Non capisco chi critica i controlli. E' vero che all'avvio una finestra windows "vecchio stile" da l'idea che si potrà usare solo la tastiera, ma una volta in game il controller funziona perfettamente e anche la mappatura tasti a schermo. I controlli li ho trovati perfetti. Il gameplay è frenetico al punto giusto e appena ci si abitua diventa davvero piacevole. il mix di platforming e shoot em up è originale e crea un amalgama davvero particolare. La grafica fa il suo a 60fps costanti, la musica è carina e appropriata. C'è pure una storia a vignette tra un livello e l'altro. La key poi si trova a 4 soldi. prendetelo

It's a fast and arcade-like Mix between shoot'em up and run'n gun-sequneces. Very stylish and very concentrated built. There are for me Dome points that Break the deal:
- the controls are difficult to get used to
- the game forces you to grind in better high scores to finish
- gets epetive fast
This ruins it for me...the game works maybe for you when are you into this kind of game and can get it in the sale
A rare gem. Very chill...zen. A classic retro space game shooter that ISN'T bullet hell!. You float through space rescuing survivors by picking them up and shooting enclosures and especially teleporting from place to place. What's best is I love the slow feel...but you CAN play as fast as you want for bonus points. And the space music is soothing...like snake jazz.

Didn't meet my expectations (at least not in the few levels before it crashed when I tried selecting levels, maybe I managed the level selection too fast), it's mostly a time-attack score-attack runner. It has really nice graphics, for what it lacks in gameplay...
It was worrying when Velocity 2X crashed to desktop while just a few seconds into its menus. However, by some software miracle, it eventually began running stably enough for me to get into the meat of this terrifically tactile space escapade.
I adore the continuity between the shmup and side-scrolling gameplay. Both sides of the game are a genuine delight to blast through. Their unique synergy makes Velocity 2X a surprise hit for the part of me that occasionally craves simple yet fast-paced action. Keeping each set of controls conceptually similar creates some ingenious parallels and reduces potential button-gymnastics confusion. The music also greatly contributes to the feeling of the snappy and responsive sci-fi assault. It was wise to stay away from integrating lives or demanding countdown timers. Instead, deaths cost time/points that affect the (mostly) optional XP. It makes what could've been a doubly stressful, 'hard but fair' genre-mixer into an action fantasy that provides room to learn, excel at, and enjoy the ideas the game has to offer.
Sadly, I'm at a point now where that menu crash has become more common and stages require a boatload of XP to unlock. Replaying early stages for gold medals doesn't sound particularly bad, but I'm not ecstatic about returning to stages under the pressure of speedrunning or hunting for collectibles in the longer levels. I've never been good at handling extrinsically imposed perfectionist challenges for long durations. To preserve my enthusiasm for Velocity 2X, it may be wise to shelve the game before it ends up hurting itself.
Looks great, runs great. Biggest complaint is not being able to map buttons on the gamepad. The way its set up, hitting the left trigger teleports you to the last beacon dropped. This is easily triggered on accident. Also, it appears this game cannot be minimized when fullscreen without issues.
Game is broken
Great visual design, music that ranks as good as Alexander Brandon's work on Tyrian... it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shame that the amount of effort that went into those is irreversibly marred by awful controls that on one hand are clearly intended for gamepads while at the same time require the player to be a three-armed chimp to use them effectively.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if not for extremely repetitive level design that by level 30 or so inserts segments that demand you to use those controls with a split-second precision, by which point the game definitely overstays its' welcome.
If arcade-style games like this were available to me when I was a kid, where I can play them at home to my heart's content, without the anxiety of calculating how many quarters were left in my pocket, I probably would have never done any of my homework at all.
This game is stimulating, frenetic, and lovingly addictive. As I get better and faster at the game, it is a joy to coordinate the different mechanics: jump, teleport, slide, sprint, shoot at the correct angle, etc... I love the heart pumping rhythm of the music and the back and forth between space combat and platforming.
After finishing a level, I happily look at my watch and declare, "I have time for one more level." The game is quite accessible, at first, for those who do now have skilled video game reflexes. Veterans of arcadia will find that there are many opportunities, and rewards, in finishing these levels with improved speed, efficiency, and thoroughness.
Lt. Kai Tana and her side kick Ralan are likeable. The story may not be mind-blowing but it enough for our purposes here. Velocity 2x is about fun game play and the story, at the very least, does no harm.
I was able to get the game on sale for about $7. For that price it was easily worth it for me.

Direct port of the PS Vita version with little to no effort put into it so you get that crispy 720p texture.
Probably played over 300+ hrs on the vita and love the game. But piss poor effort on the port.
A great sequel, the 2D element is well done!
This game plays fast, looks great, has tons of explosions, and takes two genres (top down shooter, parkour platformer) and combines them into a fun escapade. Weaving between the top down mode and the platforming felt seamless, and I think they nailed the "feel" for the game in both modes. In this way, you are always feeling like you are playing the same game. Super fun and easy to pick up!

I'm not usually a fan of this type of game but found it a lot of fun. The game is well designed so that you are eased into the mechanics with a gradual difficultly increase. The on foot sequences also add an extra bit of variety to the experience.

Really unique puzzle based shooter. Casually breezing through the levels is fun, but the game really starts to shine when you try to get a 'perfect' rating on each stage. The level design is extremely elegant and varied, and though transitioning between platforming and shooting segments seems jarring at first it soon becomes second nature and adds a tremendous amount of depth to the gameplay. Highly recommended.
I got this as bundle fodder. This game tries to be two games at once, a vertical scroller and a platformer. I didnt find either particularly interesting after the first few missions. Then it crashed. And again.
Then they want $25 CAD on here for this... na, not nearly worth that.
I'd recommend this game, but for two issues. One I could live with, the other egregious enough that I'm not sure I'll bother finishing the game, despite being nearly at the end.
First, this started as a Vita game and boy does it feel like it was designed around that system. The teleporting mechanic specifically never feels like second nature, and is always tedious to use, despite needing to utilize it constantly and quickly.
Second, and this is the worse of the two, to progress through levels requires you to gain XP from levels completed. At first, this is fine, as you're gaining enough that you're unlocking them several levels in advance, but I finished level 42 of 50 and found that I didn't have enough XP to continue, and would have to start replaying levels to grind it. This absolutely killed the game's momentum, while adding nothing.
A shame, as otherwise I really enjoyed the fast paced, arcade-y action.

Вот тут-то Velicity 2X начинает сиять своей уникальностью. Это скролл-шутер с развилками, на которых можно (нужно) оставлять телепод и поочерёдно проверять обе ветки. Это платформер, в котором можно раскидывать телеподы по всему уровню и быстро-быстро перемещаться между ними. Уровни становятся очень запутанными. Будь Velocity 2X головоломкой, тут открылся бы огромный потенциал, но поскольку у нас быстрая драйвовая игра и времени на подумать попросту нет, вам будут услужливо подсказывать, где оставлять телеподы и куда и как их забрасывать. В общем — задумка интересная, но играть всё ещё скучновато.
Однако уровень пройти мало — у уровней есть медали. По сути, для различных медалей нужно собрать на уровне всё собираемое, взорвать всё взрываемое, или уложиться в считанные минуты, что уже бывает непросто. Причём это не просто задел для перфекционистов — медали дают опыт, а опыт открывает новые уровни, так что если вы проходите игру без фанатизма, получая бронзу-серебро за скорость и серебро-золото за сбор ресурсов, где-то к 40—45 уровню (из 50) вы обнаружите, что следующий уровень закрыт и нужно добирать опыт. А для перфекционистов есть медали PERFECT, для которых нужно закончить уровень на все золотые медали сразу и при этом ни разу не умереть — что уже реальный челлендж, ради которого можно и купить игру. Но ответьте себе на вопрос — вам будет интересно десятки-сотни раз переигрывать один уровень в попытках завершить его идеально? Я знаю, многим будет, иначе спидраны не были бы такими популярными, но для меня это, например, «не моё».
Тем более что есть две вещи, которые сильно омрачняют впечатления. Во-первых, цена. В игре отличная графика, сочный саундтрек и оригинальный геймплей… для инди. А продаётся игра по цене AAA-проекта — по крайней мере, в рублях.
Во-вторых, посредственный порт на ПК. Игра-то в принципе плохо портируема с PS Vita, на которой использовались и стики (отлично заменяемые геймпадом, но не клавиатурой), и серсорный экран (заменяемый мышкой, но не геймпадом), но тут разработчики что-то совсем расслабились. Чего только стоит метание телеподов, в котором бросок будет произведён не по направлению курсора, а под определённым углом, регулируемым движением мышью вправо-влево. А уровни из дополения Dual Core вообще непроходимы на золото без геймпада — ну или на клавиатуре есть незадокументированные хоткеи, которых я не нашёл.
В общем, брать людям с менталитетом спидраннера по хорошей скидке, желательно — при наличии геймпада.
really good arcade game. will ever be a part 3?
Okay, this is a tough one. I like the game, but the controls I really don't!
It gets quite repetitive fast, and teleporting is a hell sometimes because of the controls, it's okay in the shoot 'em up part, but in the platform part it's just a hassle. The controls are so bad that after a short while my thumbs hurt because I have to switch from stick to face buttons, and back, my right thumb is not built for this, and probably nobody elses for that matter.
It's a shame, because I like the style, the music and so on, and I will keep on playing it sometimes, but not for long periods, it's simply too frustrating because of the controls.
So in the end I'll recommend it, but not for full price, so get it at a discount, and have some fun with it until it starts getting frustrating. Some people will be good at this, but I'm unfortunately not one of them.
The shmup segments are mediocre, and the platforming is even worse.

В первую часть я не играл, игра не плохая, но однообразная.
Выглядит стильно, звуки нормальные.
Но брать по сильной скидке, любителям платформеров.
Ибо игра скучная порой, имеет однотипные уровни.
Так же в игре нет русского языка, и играть на клавиатуре/мышке вообще не рекомендую, только геймпад и ни как иначе.
Keyboard/mouse controls are 100% completely broken. This should never have been released on PC in this sad state.

Fun game if you like to play two genres at once.
The tutorial parts are weird and unhelpful if you're not playing with a gamepad - the "keyboard and mouse" controls it suggests are unusable, because teleporting is critical and is done with the keyboard in a place where you can't reach while using the main keyboard controls with the other hand, and you obviously can't reach with a mouse-using hand. Once I figured out to not use the mouse and instead use WASD+shift+ctrl+space like the left half of a gamepad and IJKL+H+semicolon like the right half it all came together. (Also the rifle controlled by semicolon doesn't seem to ever be necessary or even useful.)
It took me a while to figure out the 'throw' controls that come in on level 20 - it's hold control, which doesn't appear to do anything on its own, then use IJKL to aim, which brings in the throwing UI, but that combination doesn't work if you use any other controls part way through the sequence, which made it hard to find.
Apart from these control issues, I enjoyed the game, and played it to completion, though I didn't enjoy it so much that I'd try to 100% all the levels. If you're into speed runs you might get more out of that.

Lags and crashes on Windows 10. I tried changing to windowed mode but then the game crashed. Constant lag in game regardless of the settings i use (even though there are very few). PC specs are on my profile.

It's incredible how well all the different, consistently conflicting elements of this game come together. When this sort of thing happened in the development of any other game I can think of, it was just a borderline unplayable mess, but this game stops at being merely *almost* unplayable. I don't mean that in the traditional sense either. What I mean is: Velocity 2X expects the player to learn how to do so many different things, each with their own unique inputs (of course), that I could barely keep up after a lot of practice. In fairness, part of that might have been down to my insistence on playing the game with keyboard inputs. Nevertheless, this game asks way too much of its players.
The game is divided into 2 main gameplay styles: a top-down, sometimes bullet-hell, ship shoot-em up, and a platformer-shooter. The ship-shooter is actually the main part of the gameplay, which threw me for a second since I was actually expected this game to primarily be a platformer. If I wasn’t having fun with the game anyway, I might have been more angry about being misled. Anyway…you start off in a ship-shooter segment.
With a few exceptions, the way the game ultimately works is this: you have a ship-shooter level that you’re dropped into to start with. With keyboard controls, you can move your ship with the wasd keys, you can shoot your energy cannons with the Shift key, and you can boost with the Spacebar. Right from the start you’re introduced to your first bit of confusion/frustration: if you boost, your ship rockets to the top of the screen, and you can’t see any of the obstacles coming up next. The game actually tells you about this and recommends you keep the ship at the bottom of the screen yourself so you can react to things properly. How do you do this? You hold the S key every time you want to boost and still see what’s coming up. Why would the developers make the game work this way? They have to, as it turns out, because they’re not done. The next thing you know, you’re getting a teleport ability that lets you move past walls. You do this by holding down the H key and one (or two) of your directional buttons until a special targeting reticule is hovering over where you want to go, then you release the H button. If I could point to anything in this game and call it the main mechanic, the teleport is it. But the devs still weren’t done. Nope. You also get bombs, and since your cannons can only shoot forward, but there are things you have to shoot that are to the side or behind you, you have to use bombs constantly too. To use bombs, you have to use the ijkl keys. Woo. Eventually, you also get the ability to lay telepods. These are basically checkpoints that let you return to specific parts of the level which you have to set yourself. This is done with the Ctrl key, and any time you get a prompt to deploy a telepod, you have to do it to complete the level. That’s because now the levels have branching paths, but your ship is still constantly moving upwards! Doesn’t it make perfect sense to put those two mechanics together?! The game explains that there are two ways to move your ship to a telepod location: hit the Tab key, use the wasd keys to navigate to a telepod mark, then hit Enter, -or- hit the telepod button twice to go to the last telepod placed. Realistically, you have to use the more convoluted of the two methods, because the second method usually just deploys another telepod. Also, most later levels have you putting up multiple telepods all over the place and moving to specific ones at different times, so the quick-jump option wouldn’t have worked anyway.
So now you’ve got both hands on your keyboard, you’re moving your ship, shooting up the bad guys, boosting, making sure your camera isn’t messed up by manually repositioning it, teleporting through walls, firing bombs everywhere, laying done teleport checkpoints, and exploring branching paths in a game that only moves in one direction. Are they done? Of course not. That’s because of another central gameplay mechanic: shield generators. Each level has them, and they come with numbers on them. Destroy them all in order, and their corresponding shield drops. However, sometimes (most times) one of the generators in the sequence is missing. Where is it? Enter the platforming sequences.
Whenever a generator is missing, there will always be a docking port for your ship. Enter it, and the platforming begins. You still move (and now jump) with the wasd keys, and running faster now replaces boosting on the spacebar. Your character has blasters embedded in her arms, and those replace bomb-firing on the ijkl keys. Teleporting still happens with the H key. Now, however, you have to first hold the S key and then hit the W key to drop through a platform without teleporting. You also have tight spaces that you have to slide through by hitting the W key and whichever directional key pushes you towards the space. You also eventually get a more powerful rifle weapon which only fires sideways, and you use that with the ; key. Finally, you also get telepods for the platforming sections. This one’s a doozy. Okay, so…first you hold the Ctrl key to get set up to throw a telepod, then you press one of your directional shooting buttons to bring up an arc line representing where you’ll be throwing the telepod. The arc line isn’t stationary (that would make too much sense), so you have to finesse the line back and forth over the spot you want to throw the telepod at and release the button at just the right moment. Usually that’s all you have to do, and then you use the same convoluted method for teleporting your ship to a telepod location during ship sections to teleport your *character* to her telepods during platforming sections. Oh boy. Except later levels make it so that you have to do all that, but then also pull up the map menu and teleport to the telepod before it lands (the map screen freezes everything, for what it’s worth), then immediately teledash through some hazard.
*Another* mechanic is introduced in the final levels of the game, where you pilot two ships at once by having one ship mirror the movements of the other, with pick-ups that can only be grabbed by one ship or the other.
As you progress through each level, you’re looking to try to fulfill a handful of different criteria in order to get a high score. Things like: overall completion time, energy crystal mcguffins collected, and alien ally slave pod thingies collected. Towards the end of the game, if you haven’t gotten enough points in earlier levels (we’re talking, you had better have gold on a few of the early levels at least), you’ll be locked out of the final levels of the game and have to go back and do better on some early levels to get more points.
So…my recommendation of this game comes with conditions. Do you like ship-shooters? Do you like being challenged to multitask like nobody’s business? Do you not mind ridiculous controls schemes, or fundamentally opposed gameplay mechanics? Did you actually read everything up to this point, and think “This is fine.”? If you answered yes to all of those questions, this game might be for you. I did have a lot of fun with it, despite what this review sounds like, so there’s that.
A nice action game which manages to be both challenging and forgiving at the same time.

First: The game is goregous and has great music.
However, the control layout isn't intuitive or tight - you can't run and gun, and teleporting takes a second to aim for some reason.
Then there's the level design forces you to stop quite a bit to not crash into walls due to the scrolling screen in the shmup parts and not to run into some instakill roadblock when you're platforming. There's a lot of speed up, stop, speed up...
I'm ambivalent about the respawn where you keep all your progress even after dying. The instadeath from all collisions possibly warrants it, but the controllers aren't precise nor responsive enough to avoid many of them without having already run into the enemies, heated floors or walls.
I thought this game would be about speed. Instead it's more like a traffic jam.
Just started and already addicted. Great music. You can remap the keyboard controls but not the gamepad, but I don't mind since the gamepad controls are intuitive. Had a crash in a cutscene (running Windows 10), so I opted to run in windowed mode. Not sure it's related. I still recommend.
Had Velocity on PSP, Ultra on Vita and 2x on PS4 (with platinum trophies on both games), so I can say I really liked and enjoyed the series so far. I've bought this extra copy of 2x to boost the game sales a little bit and increase the chances of seeing a sequel. Except that...
It's a poor port of an excellent game. Using an i7/1060 laptop, the game itself runs smoothly but crashed twice in 30 minutes (for comparison, witcher 3 crashed on me once in about 100 hours). Default control bindings are pretty terrible and even with a steam controller it seems near impossible to make the game as responsive as it was on PS4/Vita or even responsible enough to be enjoyable. Adding to the insult, the steam overlay runs SLOW (like 1 frame update every 5-6 seconds) and it takes about a minute or more to remap a single button (only game i've ever had this issue). The result is an unresponsive mess that will make you fight with the game in the worst possible ways.
Porting problems/bugs apart, it's an immensely fun game with fast paced action and lots of replay value. Definitely a must buy, just not on PC.
Do yourself a favor and skip this game on PC, buy it on switch or PS instead.

Contrary to appearances, Velocity 2X is not a shmup.
(For the record, I really dislike the contraction "shmup", but will nevertheless use it to facilitate writing this review. God help me.)
The core gameplay of shmups (gross) is to navigate a screen full of hails of bullets and obstacles whilst collecting power-ups and dealing damage to as many enemies as possible.
Velocity 2X has all of those elements - hundreds of on-screen enemies in kaleidoscopic formations, "bullet hell" patterns to dodge, even the occasional boss to shoot down - but they are only used as window dressing to disguise a completely different type of game.
The title "Velocity" is appropriate, because rather than testing reflex and adaptation like your typical shmup (ugh), the game is all about moving through a level as quickly as possible, using timing, memorization, and correct button inputs to navigate increasingly complex environments. In your ship, you may have to teleport through a wall by pressing X to bring up a reticule and manually aiming it to another area of the screen, then use A to shoot your lasers through some glass panels, and then use the right joystick to lob a few bombs to your left and right to destroy some switches in a specific order. You will also likely be holding the Boost button throughout, meaning this sequence could take place in about 2 1/2 seconds.
If this doesn't sound like an action game due to the absence of combat, it's because it most often isn't. Enemies are just an occasional part of a sequence of basic tasks that the game encourages you to accomplish as quickly as possible. More on that later.
To complement the shmup (ewww) segments, half of the game is played on foot in a side-scrolling platformer. The same design ethos applies - the player must move as quickly as possible through a vast array of challenges. This is initially problematic, since the control scheme is completely rewired for a new set of actions, and most levels transition back-and-forth between the two modes several times. It takes several hours of practice to adjust between the two control sets without getting confused and making small (and often deadly) button input mistakes. In the first hours of Velocity 2X, you will almost literally feel your brain stop processing for a second as you blink at the screen and wait for the right signal to zap to your fingers. Or you'll just press the wrong button like your Dad playing Call of Duty. It's a jarring sensation.
The platforming sections are arguably increased in complexity from the shmup (please kill me) sections. For example, your character can shoot a laser with the O button while sprinting, but only straight ahead. To shoot targets at an angle requires another weapon assigned to the right joystick....but this removes your ability to sprint. Your teleport instantly moves you about two body lengths in any direction, but often the obstacle you're moving through is deadly, meaning perfect timing is required to avoid splatting on a red hot wall. (I'm not clear on why some walls are red hot, that seems like a safety issue.)
There are other more complex mechanics introduced as the campaign progresses, and these complexities are what keep Velocity 2X interesting from front to back. In the back half, there's a surprising and welcome shift towards puzzle solving, where I occasionally had to stop moving for a minute to think about how to advance. This shows real talent and creativity on the part of the designers, who were not content to just throw obstacles at the player quickly, but also to fuse their mechanics together in thoughtful ways.
In Velocity 2X, the speed at which the game moves is player controlled. Your ship has a boost button that accelerates both it and the screen scrolling (which will regularly squash you between an obstacle and the bottom of the screen), while the on-foot section has a sprint button. Using these buttons constantly isn't required, because most levels don't have a time limit. (Those that do are reduced in complexity to allow for faster movement.) Intelligent use of these boost & sprint buttons is necessary to clear the level quickly while giving your brain and fingers the time they need to perform complex tasks correctly.
And yet, the only real penalty for not completing a level quickly enough is failing to achieve the gold medal time at the end. A player is evaluated on four things: clear time, collectibles acquired, points gathered, and whether or not death occurred. Collectibles, of which there are hundreds per level, and points (earned through said collectibles as well as destroying enemies and obstacles and grabbing power-ups) are usually not an issue if the player is attentive, since the vast majority are in plain sight. But surviving a level without any deaths can be a real challenge in the back half, where finnicky teleport controls and insta-kill obstacles will regularly mess up a run. But by far the biggest challenge in any level is the gold medal, because the times (again, in the back half) are very stringent, and the faster you go, the more likely you are to make mistakes. Getting a "Perfect" requires success with all criteria - get the gold medal, all collectibles, all points, and stay death-free. It is punishing, to say the least.
This is likely where a completionist such as myself will bounce off the game. It takes a certain type of person to work on the elusive Perfect score, because the difficult levels each last around 5 minutes, and one mistimed or incorrect button press is all it takes to require restart.
And while this is a level of play that few will attempt, it makes me wonder where the challenge of the game comes from if the Perfect run is ignored. When I abandoned the effort for perfection about 40 levels in (out of 50), I was able to clear the rest of the game in just over an hour without any effort. Leading up to that point, I could spend that same amount of time perfecting a single level. Since there are infinite lives and frequent checkpoints, there isn't any real punishment for death. The result is a hardcore design ethos obsessed with perfection and time trials that can be largely ignored by a casual player and completed in a few short hours.
It's taken a while to talk about the gameplay, but just a quick note on presentation: it's fantastic. This is a great-looking game, with really clean and colorful graphics and some great effects work. The music is also wonderful, good enough that I may hunt for an OST to purchase.
Velocity 2X is a really unique and enjoyable game, albeit with a steep learning curve and some questionable controls. Dedicated and very patient players will need dozens of hours and very good timing to perfect the game, while most casual players will find an enjoyable 5-hour campaign that is truly unique in video games.

Velocity 2X is a hybrid of 2D platformer and 2D top down shootemup. In a science fiction setting, you fight some aliens in the two different game modes and save the universe.
The graphics aren't terrible and the game plays well enough, but the controls can't be remapped which means it's their way or the highway when it comes to playing the game how you want to. Also, the resolution is locked. The game just doesn't feel like a PC game, despite some effort being put in, it just wasn't enough.
Also, there's no way I can recommend anyone pays $20 a 2D retro game in 2018. There's plenty of free 2D games, and AAA games like Shadow of Mordor, Titanfall 2, Dead by Daylight, Stellaris, Witcher 3, Fallout 4... (different genres but still a good example to demonstrate some perspective) can be picked up for cheaper than this during sales.
todavia no lo he terminado, me quedan unos 10 niveles, pero puedo decir que me parece un titulo decente aunque muy pulible. no es que se diga especialmente innovador, pero hay niveles muy satisfactorios cuando las propias mecanicas aparecen bien aplicadas. hay otros en las que sin embargo se hacen tediosas (hay un teletransporte que tanto en nave como a pie es la mecanica que peor y mejor me lo ha hecho pasar, ya que es genial cuando no tienes que apuntar a un sitio muy alejado y requiere un tiempo o una precision que no me encajan en este estilo de juegos). muy rejugabble, si, pero por donde voy llevan un par de niveles obligandote a volver a niveles anteriores porque no tienes suficientes puntos. el apartado artistico esta bien a secas aunque las ilustraciones cuando te ponen la historia me parezcan demasiado simples, la banda sonora me gusta mucho y los propios efectos de disparo y otras habilidades son de lo que mas me gusta del juego. recomiendo sobre todo si se ve de oferta, me salio por 5 euros y oye no me puedo quejar, solo analizo por encima :)

I was loving this game, really. The art, the soundtrack, the saturday morning cartoon writing, the speed. All of it!
But then you locked the last couple levels off until I went back to older levels and did them to your standard. I wasn't exactly playing poorly, two stars every level (and with a twenty minute timer on a game meant to be sped through I'm wondering how badly you were expecting people to play), but that's beside the point.
There's no option to just unlock the levels. DLC packs don't count toward your XP so I can't use those new levels to boost my score. This game is clearly meant to be played in a sprint. A sprint! Dashing at lightspeed to the sound of dubstep! When you MAKE me go back to old levels I see that they were pretty much all the same and you kill the pacing. It's weird is all. I think I've had my fill, thanks.

I haven't had many issues in about 10 hours of play, only 2 crashes during the first hour and no issues afterwards.
Controls aren't perfect, but are still pretty good.
Preface: I really love this game. I like the premise, and speed trial games are kinda my thing. That said, I have the same complaints as many other reviewers: there is a crash bug that is known and as yet unresolved/patched. The controller button layout cannot be reconfigured, and the KBM layout, while customizable, is extremely limited.
If you can get this on the PSN or Xbox, I think it is more stable and therefore definitely worth your time, but if you're running Windows 10, don't bother with this one.

No era lo que esperaba, pero me ha gustado bastante. Es un juego arcade en el que lo más importante es tener una buena coordinación, memorizar los niveles y demás, está más que nada dirigido para los que les guste hacer eso, si quieres simplemente jugar sin presión también puedes hacerlo pero seguramente no lo disfrutes tanto. La banda sonora y el diseño artistico le quedan perfecto, así que es muy recomendable.
Art and graphics and Gameplay is amazing, but the atmosphere and the levels in this game are too repetitive.
I discovered this game when its soundtrack came up on the youtube playlist and then bought it during a sale. It's a wellmade shoot 'em up / platformer that took around 50 hours to complete. Played it to 100% completion. The levels get tough towards the end of the game. Some levels may require a lot of attempts to achieve perfect score. I used a standard controller, and I never tried using mouse and keyboard. Dexterity a must. Game crashed 3-4 times to desktop in level selection but no progress was lost. No other issues experienced. If this game type interests you, then I recommend Velocity 2X.

You'll never quite get the hang of the controls, and the levels are incredibly, incredibly repetitive. The game gives all it has to offer in 10 minutes, but those who've beaten it say that takes 20-30 hours.
I'm not really into Velocity 2X's gameplay, and have no intentions of completing it. Most of the time, I would give a negative review for such a game, but in this case of this game, I cannot, in good conscience, do so. Why? Well, the art style is aesthetically pleasing and crisp; the sort of thing that, while graphically outdated in years to come, will still look good thanks to its appealing design. It's the reason why someone might prefer the look of characters in Chrono Trigger to those in Final Fantasy VII, even though FFVII is graphically more advanced.
The gameplay involves the screen scrolling while you teleport your ship past solid matter to collect stuff, and dodging shots, while (eventually) dealing out damage yourself to anything you need to destroy. You will come across locks sealed in interior sections, where you will actually [i]disembark from your ship[/i], and run around in a surprisingly competent side-scrolling run to disengage the lock blocking your shift, before hopping back into your ship and proceeding further. At the end of several missions, you will eventually have a boss battle, and then you continue into new environments. It's not bad, but didn't hook me in.
The music in Velocity 2X is also pleasing to the ear, and while the controls felt a bit weird to me, you can remap them as you please, and despite being a screen-scrolling space game, there are story comics with fun drawn expressions for the lead character in between missions. The greatest compliment, in my opinion, that I could give this game, is that anyone could experience this game in its entirety, from start to finish. Is this an easy game? Oh goodness, no. Getting to the end of the game just takes some time and a little work, but progressing is not difficult. That means if you're terrible at games, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to comlete Velocity 2X.
Now that said, the game has a scoring system, and for the super hardcore players who care about that sort of thing, this could be an outrageously difficult game. I find this lovely. It can be a relaxing game for some which they can enjoy, just wanting to complete the game, or a harrowing, rage-machine for folks who want a really hard challenge and are more concerned with a high score than simply "winning." The only people who lose out here are the people who don't believe other people should be able to enjoy games if they're not as skilled at video games, and I'm not concerned with the happiness of people who wish others ill for doing no wrong.
So in conclusion, I'm not into this game, but has great art style, sounds great, has story when most games wouldn't have bothered this much in the genre, and it should be possible to complete by some of the worst-skilled gamers, but still a great challenge to the score-seeking hardcore types. This game oozes with so much quality and one of the most cleverly designed difficulties I've ever seen. I suck at this game, and unlike most games, its actions didn't tell me to go fornicate myself because I didn't "git gud" enough to get further into it. Instead, it welcomed me with open arms, while simultaneously offering the same acceptance to gaming badasses who want a huge challenge. Thank you for that, Velocity 2X's devs.
Cheap shooter/side scroller that manages to do much, much worse than the Guardian Legend. Levels are bland and feel rushed. There's nothing of value here.

However, because of the fastpaced design, the simplcity plays largely in the games favor.
Fans of the first game might find the platforming sections a fresh expansion to the traditional gameplay.
So far, I've had a grand time and wanted to share that Velocity 2X is running perfectly fine for me.
Worked my way to the 15th level. Control still feels completely unintuitive. With no remap option, this is as far as I'll bother. As this came in a bundle, I can't return it, otherwise I would. Too bad, seems alright. I thought it was more of a run n gun, but it is decidely a speedrunning game.
Stopped working for me the second I got out of my ship. No idea why
Not bad but disappointing. My main critic is about the level design which is a bit boring. And many levels are way too long...

TL:DR; The music is spectacular and this is a fun game.
I have to stress that this game is a blast overall.
- There are some neat ideas, like the warp pod on foot.
- The levels are mainly quite challenging, although sometimes I believe that the "Perfect" parameters are mutually exclusive.
- I enjoy the art, despite the story being a bit meh.
- The soundtrack. My god, the soundtrack. I actually downloaded this to listen to at work. It's that good, and it's not often that a song can actually help with world building.
This game has its flaws, no doubt.
- The controls are very counterintuitive during the first few moments after switching from foot to ship and vice versa. I haven't experiemented extensively with the configuration but I believe that a playtester probably should've mentioned it.
- There are some cheap traps, you'll know what I mean once you get to a certain set of wall mines.
- Very uninteresting enemy variety.
At the very least, buy this one for the soundtrack. Simply amazing.
Very regretful that I let this sit my my backlog for so long. It's blazing fast and an absolute blast.

This game looks great and has so much potential, but it’s ultimately really disappointing. When I first encountered Velocity 2X, I thought that I was going to get something like The Guardian Legend on NES – an action/adventure epic mixed with a SHUMP game. The Guardian Legend is one of my favorite games, so I was excited. Unfortunately, Velocity 2X’s action and SHUMP sections are boring, repetitive, and not compelling at all.
The whole thing feels more like a time-wasting mobile game than a full-priced title (25 bucks Canadian, which is insane). The platforming sections are more like an endless runner type of game than the 2D platformer/Metroidvania sort of adventure that you may be expecting. You just rush through each stage, jumping over lava, gathering crystals, and avoiding obstacles/taking out enemies as fast as you can. The SHUMP sections are again very mobile-esque: quickly rush through the mission and be careful about getting caught on anything that might blow you up.
If the gameplay is shallow and repetitive, the controls don’t help very much. The teleportation mechanic is very poorly done in both game modes, and the entire process of dashing, sprinting, shooting, and teleporting during the platforming sections is really awkward and clunky. The game wants you to move quickly and accurately, but it never feels natural or pleasant.
Now, not everything about the game is bad. The graphics are very clean and sharp, and the art style is striking. I really like the character designs, and Kai Tana is an awesome heroine. I think that most people will find themselves drawn to the game because of the art and production quality, and I can't blame them - it looks great! The cinema scenes are pretty good and the writing is mostly brisk, funny, and enjoyable. The soundtrack is also quite decent, but the same song gets old after you’ve heard it a million times.
That's where the good stuff ends, though. Everything else about Velocity 2X is just undercooked at best. I can't believe how much they're charging for this. I know that the game has an attractive exterior and you might be tempted to try it out, but I would recommend steering clear of this one, even on sale...it just felt like a waste of my time.
I need more fingers to play this game.
Quand un jeu essaie de mélanger des genres qui ne sont a priori pas complémentaires, je m'attends toujours à ce que l'un des genres représentés prennent toute la part du gâteau en terme de qualité et les autres soient complètement foirés ou l'ensemble est très moyen parce qu'à vouloir bien faire partout, les développeurs se ratent.
Velocity 2X est un peu l'exception qui confirme la règle avec son mélange très réussi de Shoot Them Up et de plateforme action. L'ensemble fonctionne très bien et la progression dans les niveaux permet de conserver un bon équilibre.
L'histoire est anecdotique et consiste surtout à parcourir des niveaux dont le level design est un peu répétitif, mais réussi. Il faudra finir le niveau vite, récupérer des collectibles et détruire tout ce qu'il peut l'être pour atteindre le score parfait. L'écran de fin de niveau montre la progression du joueur et l'XP gagnée.
Au départ, finir le niveau sans vouloir faire péter les scores suffit pour avancer dans l'histoire puis arrive le moment où les développeurs ont du se dire que le jeu était trop simple et trop court alors ils ont augmenté les paliers pour débloquer les niveaux suivants ( Pour ma part, je me suis retrouvé bloqué au niveau 42 sur 50 en progressant normalement). A partir de ce moment, j'ai pesté parce que faire 3/4 du jeu et devoir refaire les anciens niveaux juste pour avancer, c'est un peu lourd.
Pour tempérer ceci, la plupart des niveaux sont très courts et il m'a suffit d'en refinir quelques uns en mode speedrun pour débloquer suffisamment d'XP pour aller jusqu'à la fin ( Le dernier niveau est un peu naze). Je précise aussi que toutes les améliorations récupérées sont utilisables lorsque l'on refait les niveaux ( Indispensables pour certains collectibles).
Les améliorations se débloquent automatiquement et de façon très progressive.
Le jeu est assez joli viusellement. La musique est excellente. La durée de vie est faible (5H me semble assez crédible pour un bon joueur) pour ceux qui ne veulent pas scorer. La progression est très agréable jusqu'à ce petit plafond qui oblige à recommencer sauf à être vraiment très doué. Le jeu n'étant pas très difficile, le passage de grind est assez court.
En résumé, c'est très réussi comme mélange des genres. Le jeu a été clairement pensé pour le scoring et le speedrun, ce qui peut expliquer sa durée de vie réduite.
P.S. : Les combats de boss sont assez réussis sauf la fin.
It doesn't communicate its goals or rewards well enough to interest me. Should I be running fast and ignoring the crystals, or should I stop to get everything? I think it could have benefitted from drilling down and focusing on one aspect. It's like trying to learn to play two different games poorly, and I'm bad at it.
This game seems to be entirely lacking in emergent gameplay. It's like a simple rhythm game, where you're just trying to press the right buttons to bypass the presented obstacle, except you set your own pace. The screen is zoomed in enough that you can't plan ahead, and the obstacles don't have any sort of complexity to them, so there's not much in the way of thinking to do here. If you need a rhythm game without rhythm, I would recommend One Finger Death Punch for a more cerebral experience.
I don't really do games like this at all. Velocity 2X is a something of a cross between old school Gameboy Formula Racer (go fast without hitting obstacles) and Lode Runner (run through tunnels with the screen sidescrolling). Based on the first 9 levels it seems they've decided to not make the 'maps' complicated but instead added lots of extra features (shooting, teleporting, sliding, jumping, switching between mini-games) and the player's objective is to combine these powers as fast as possible without missing too many collectibles.
The quick pace makes it about as fun as a primitive game like this can be, but I don't really need time killer apps on my PC (phone + waiting at the dentist's office would be a different story) and that's why I had to go negative. If you really like games like these or are wondering what your 4-year-old might want for his birthday then don't let me dissuade you, it's a well made game and could be lots of fun.

Man, a little surprised at how much I ended up liking this one. It's a bit awkward to play at first because the developers wanted to take advantage of ALL THE BUTTONS, and the control scheme is maybe a bit of a convoluted mess, but muscle memory builds up the more you play it, I guess. I played on keyboard and I dunno if it'd be any easier on controller but I don't have one.
The game really emphasises speed and I really appreciate that because the mechanics are certainly designed for it; some of the levels in this game are kind of insane in how precise you have to be at the speed you're going, especially the later ones and pretty much all of the expansion levels. But it feels really damn good to nail the levels and get that perfect rating, even if it's ridiculously hard on a good number of levels; one of the hardest challenges I've faced in a while really, but the fact that I stuck with it only really hows how enjoyable the game is to play.
I do have a few issues with the game, though; the telepod throw is just a bad mechanic, first of all. It's awkward to aim and always breaks the pace of the game because you have to stop and try to wrestle with the controls to aim it and it's just aaaawkward. I also don't really like how the pickup suction works; it feels to me like once you start pulling it in you should already have it, but it's very easy to lose pickups by outrunning the suction and with how strict the requirements are for perfect, literally missing a single pickup is an automatic failure, which can be... a bit frustrating, yeah. Also don't like a few enemy types, especially the vokh guards when they start having waaayyy too much health. And there's a handful of levels that are far too long for their own good; it gets really stressful playing these long levels when they're 4, 5, 6, heck even 7 minutes long. There's not a ton of marathon levels thankfully but I'd prefer having none at all.
The game also looks pretty dang great visually and there's never any graphical confusion, everything stands out where it needs to. The soundtrack is... okay, but gets a bit old fast. The story's okay but a bit throwaway, but it's pretty clearly not the point so whatever.
This is definitely a game I can see myself replaying in the future and one of the better platformers on steam once you get past the initial awkwardness. Even considering picking up Velocity Ultra now since the shmup parts of this are plenty clever on their own. So yeah. Good game with a few roadbumps but on the whole pretty strong regardless.

I really enjoy this game. I'm a sucker for vertical space scrollers, puzzlers, teleporting features, and frenetic gameplay. It is quite fun to go back to previous levels and try to beat the Gold speed rating, or gett all the acheivements on one run for a PERFECT. The teleporting implementation is easy to use and very satisfying. I highly recommend.

- Abysmal control schemes on both keyboard and gamepad
- Configuring keyboard controls is thoroughly a pain
- Can't configure gamepad controls AT ALL
- Keyboard prompts are not shown during the game
- Multiple game breaking technical issues, check forums
- Story is presented in simple screens before levels
- Gets repetitive very quickly
I've been loving this stylish mix of high-speed platforming and puzzly vertical shooting. The well-animated heroine, Lt. Kai Tana is kind of like a dubstep version of Erin Gray from Buck Rogers. I want to see her in more games. Oh, and the music is supremely awesome. Get this game.
El juego esta bien realizado, graficos bien diseñados y la historia en formato comic bastante vistosa...
Pero el juego es aburrido, repetitivo a más no poder y con una configuración de botones (gamepad) por defecto desastrosa, menos mal que se puede editar.
Por no decir nada de que lo visto en el juego en tema de jugabilidad no tiene nada de innovador...
De todos modos falla estripitosamente en un control farragoso que impide al juego ser lo agil que deberia, siendo precisamente ese el objetivo... ser muy rapido moviendose por los diferentes niveles (scroll lateral si manejas a la protagonista y cenital con la nave).
No puedo recomendarlo y menos al precio de 20€
