I played this game for hours after I found in the bargain bin at the grocery store years ago. It's a lot of fun.
Absolutely packed with content, challenging rewarding gameplay, a killer soundtrack, an awesome art-style, a prolific modding scene...It's easy to ramble about this one, pure arena shooter bliss that remains infinitely replayable. The dopamine high of entering a flow state in a tightly contested match on here is about as good as it gets for the genre. Highly recommended.
One of the most fun games of its time. I have probably over 3K+ hrs on this masterpiece (purchased the CD-ROM box set, 6 CD's in total) and played the absolute sh!t out of it. I remember playing this at LAN parties w/friends for years, ... honestly, this game was way ahead of its time, one of the best ever, IMO.

Ещё в далёких нулевых, будучти мелким пареньком я регулярно посещал компьютерные клубы, играя в различные прекрасные игры. Одной из этих невероятных игр стала Unreal Tournament.
Десятки парней по локалке сидели и рубились друг с другом за госсподство на различных картах героически обороняя точки или нагло воруя их у противников под великолепный акомпонемент отборнейших матов, угроз, запаха сигарет, пота и пива.
Кто-то (в лице нас, ещё юных парней) филигранно разбивал группы противников (в лице старшеков) принося нам победу раз за разом. А потом так же филигранно принимал физические подарки по своему улыбальничку от всё тех же старших после окончания времени игры, где-то позади клуба.
Кто-то исключительно "дипломатическим языком" указывал оппонентам на то, в чём они не правы прямо внутри "компов".
Но даже не смотря на это, мы все возвращались обратно за свои компьютеры, запуская очередной бой по локалке.
Жаль что эта игра со временем утратила у молодого поколения своё внимание, но она навсегда останется в наших в сердцах, занимая почётное место в нашей памяти.

Unreal Tournament '99 has better vibes and music, but Unreal Tournament 2004 is the Unreal Tournament I come back to the most often.
Unreal Tournament 3 is a sad frown.

Runs perfect on modern systems. This game is still a lot of fun. It's to bad they took it off Steam or any storefront for that matter. Archive.org and Ebay are your only options as of this writing.

На мой взгляд как "1 на 1" квейк был лучше. А вот в командных баталиях Анреал был на складки толще кваки. Вот прошло время, можно смело сказать, что победила в таких схватках только ностальгия.
Нынче покойная серия крутых шутеров, с отпечатком того времени. Сейчас складывается ощущение, что игры такого типа начали устаревать уже в момент своего выхода. Слишком сложная, слишком много контроля, в котором чувствовалась разница между игроками в одну тысячную процента в пользу микросекунд реакции.

I never got around to playing 2k4 for the simple reason my pc at the time wasn't up to snuff. Was playing BG1-2 and other CRPG stuff instead.
All in all... the road not taken and the one that was had a lot of good gaming in common I can now extrapolate with the gift of hindsight.
Thanks for forcing me to download a no-cd cracked .exe like it's the year 2000, because your release doesn't run and recognize the CD key, even though I can see the registry value with the game's key, Steam!

The fact that this game is no longer listed for sale on steam, and that there's no easy way to play multiplayer is a disappointment beyond belief. This classic game needs to be re-mastered for the modern audience. To this day nothing hits harder than a shock rifle combo. M-M-M-MONSTER KILL!!!
I was dumping time into this game long before Steam came along. UT2004 is a classic. We use to also hunt for total game conversion mods on ModDB back in the day - Which, is actually how games like Killing Floor were born. It's the game that always keeps on giving, even in 2025 (if you can get past some of the poor UI aging.)

I remember playing this on Gameboy color. Honestly the graphics for the small CRT of the Gameboy was pretty good. I remember some kids overclocked it to eek out just a few more FPS. One kid even installed a fan to cool the CPU that he overclocked to 500 mhz. I will never forget the late night LAN parties with 8 of these bad boys linked together for the ultimate deathmatch tournament. Those CRTs got friggin hot back then.

Es el más completo y su versión definitiva en lo que fué la etapa 2000 de UT.
Buena calidad gráfica para su época, el motor UE 2.5 es espectacular, de hecho muchos títulos fueron posibles gracias a él.
Mecánicas de lujo, tanto para jugar online como contra bots. Le habré dedicado cientos de horas en mi adolescencia, aunque no tantas como al UT99, que para mí es el clásico y el cénit de todo el universo Unreal Tournament a mi gusto.
Los modos Onslaught y Assault son una crema; recomiendo dedicarle unas horitas.

This is a classic game from my 20's. It's got a good mix of different kinds of FPS matches. There's not really any story or campaign, you're just playing Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, or a couple other variations in different maps, and with different difficulty. I like this for when I need to unwind, and turn my brain off.

Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition is the essence of the arena shooter genre presented in a form that's devoid of modern gaming tropes such as upgrade systems, pay-to-win schemes, and microtransactions for cosmetics. It's pure, violent FPS joy that's accessible and easy to get into, but it's also full of nuances and options that keep gameplay from getting stale.
When you fire up UT2K4 and prepare to jump in, you can tailor the gameplay in almost any way that you want. Choices include a good handful of gameplay modes like Capture the Flag or Last Man Standing, maximum amount of players, what maps to load, bot inclusion and difficulty selection, end goals based on time limits or score/kill count, team play, special item inclusion, and much more. There's also a "mutator" system that will add and/or change game features like mid-air player control, one-hit kill weapons, and even cause a player's head to expand like a balloon if they're outperforming their opponents. Custom maps and mods can also be added to keep things interesting although they (and public online play) cannot be accessed through the game's menu at this time without configuration file editing due to the original UT2K4 server(s) being offline.
As far as the core gameplay is concerned, this entry in the UT series has been finely tuned, and it shows. UT2K4''s gameplay has a faster paced flow that almost feels arcade-like. Almost all of the classic arsenal is here with a replacement here or there, and almost all of the offered weapons feel like they have an "all-purpose" usability. New dodge moves have been added and proved to me in a few tight battles to be worth mastering. Adrenaline can now be accumulated through various means like killing opponents, securing objectives, and collecting pill pick-ups in the arena. Reaching an adrenaline level of 100 allows you to spend it on temporary powers like health regeneration or increased speed.
Regarding the presentation, even though there are a few blocky visuals and weak BGM tracks that can make Unreal Tournament 2004 show its age in a not-so-good way (not to mention what I feel is the ugliest HUD ever), the game still looks and sounds great overall, even after 20+ years. Controls are pretty good as well and are easy to precisely customize, although it can be a bit too easy sometimes to perform a dodge maneuver accidentally and fly sideways off of a ledge or into a corner when staring down the barrel of a rocket launcher. Also, a fair amount of the pack-in maps have a rather dull and repetitive "industrial" aesthetic which I found to be a bit boring after a while.
In my opinion, Unreal Tournament 2004 is inarguably a classic game that every fan of the FPS should have in their collection. Sadly, this title is currently not available from the Steam store or most digital storefronts, which is both confounding and a real shame. If you ever come across a physical copy, or if the game is brought back to platforms like Steam, I cannot stress enough how much I recommended a purchase.
Seriously, Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition truly should come back to Steam. Here's to hoping that it does!

Back to my childhood, but not for long.)
I used to play this plenty before it was available on Steam and I was still using Windows as a gaming platform. (Four Windows 7 ISOs later, I still can't find one that's bootable when transferred to a USB memory stick, so there's no going back for me.)
Unfortunately, game play lags horribly on GNU+Linux. This makes it difficult to aim and fire without ending up a sitting duck for enemies to take pot shots. The Windows version works with no issues.
Another amazing game that was cut out from all digital stores by Epic Games, so there is not much reason to write a review except for retrospective purposes. Unreal Tournament 2004 is actually a re-release of Unreal Tournament 2003 with new game modes, maps and an updated single player campaign.
This time, I decided not to torture myself in single player and went with the medium difficulty that the game suggests by default – Experienced. Even though the bots were not as smart and realistic as they would be on Adept and higher, they still provided a challenge especially on the last maps and the finale. So, if you, just like me, are not experienced with arena shooters, do not hesitate to choose lower difficulties – you will still get the feel of what the game is about.
Even though UT2004 is basically an improved version of UT99, there were some things that I did not like: weapon, character design and overall style became too cartoonish in comparison to the previous game, there are almost no old maps from UT99 in SP campaign, there is still no dedicated dodge button, and the adrenaline system with its combos is questionable. The team management aspect is very interesting and adds more depth to single player, however, the credits system seemed very underdeveloped: you only use them to pay salary to your teammates, treat their injures and pay for losing a duel match (yeah, you can also purchase new teammates but you will really only do that in the beginning). I also noticed that your teammate bots sometimes just stand in place doing nothing until they are killed, and they behave quite poorly with the passes in bombing run mode. However, this may be not due to the flawed code but because I chose the medium difficulty.
Overall, despite a few drawbacks, UT2004 still gives you great Unreal Tournament experience and you get used to its new mechanics and design pretty quickly. If you liked UT99 and also have UT2004 in your Steam library – do not hesitate to play this one too. The only thing I am not sure about is setting up multiplayer – in UT99 you basically just needed to install a fan patch for everything to work; here even with the latest patch when I tried to see the server list the game complained about firewall settings and being unable to connect. I did not try to fix it because I do not have anyone to play with anyway, I just warn you that setting up multiplayer may turn out to be tricky.
P.S. There is also a hidden single player ladder with the Onslaught mode. To unlock it, go to …\Steam\steamapps\common\Unreal Tournament 2004\System, find UT2004.ini, open it with a text editor, and add the following lines:

Now, after you defeat the final boss, a new tab called “additional” will appear, with the only subtab called “onslaught”. The interface there is slightly broken, but the maps are fully playable. Even though UT2004 updated the single player campaign, for some reason, Onslaught ladder was never officially added even with the patches.
72 minutes on Steam, countless wonderful memories from yore. This is one of those legendary classics that made us and shaped up. F*** those pieces of s*** for pulling all these original games from every store and trying to bury them.
