Where it all started for the Tropico franchise. The foundation on which the rest are built and your path of El Presidente.

- Good city builder and simulator
- Requires actual strategy and is challenging
- You will have to calculate morale, respect, dissent, money, etc and plan ahead.
- Political satire
- Become a dictator
- Worth it's replay value and for the nostalgia. You can't go wrong for the sale price.

**A Review of *Tropico***

Let me be perfectly clear: I did not lose the election of 1960. But that's not why we're here.

We're here because this game—*Tropico*—lets you run a country. A small country, yes. A banana republic, if you will. But you run it. You make the decisions. You stand before the people and you tell them what's good for them, and by God, you deliver.

And let me tell you something about running a country: it's not easy. The factions—the intellectuals, the communists, the capitalists, the religious—they all want something. They all think they know better. Sounds familiar? I spent eight years in the White House dealing with the same damn thing. Except there, I had Kennedy's ghost breathing down my neck. Here? No Kennedy. Just you and the people.

Here's the thing about *Tropico* that Kennedy would never understand: it's about *stability*. Kennedy, he wanted the glamour. The cameras. The "ask not what your country can do for you" nonsense. Me? I want the roads built. The farms producing. The rebels pacified. You don't get that with speeches. You get that with *work*. You get that with *systems*.

And yes, you can rig the elections. I'm not saying I approve. I'm saying the option exists. And if the option exists, it's not illegal—it's *strategic*.

The graphics are simple. The music—that Caribbean guitar—it gets in your head. But underneath it all is a machine. A machine that works. A machine that *delivers*. And that's more than I can say for the Bay of Pigs.

Do I recommend it? Yes. Because for once, you're the one in charge. No Kennedy. No media. Just you, El Presidente, and a little island that does what you tell it to do.

And if the people protest? Send in the troops. That's leadership.

I did not lose the election of 1960. But if I'd had *Tropico* back then—if I'd practiced running a country on my own terms—maybe things would've been different.

Ну, игра явно для своего времени. Изометрия в данной серии уже смотрится слишком устаревшей, как по мне. Лучше поиграть в более новые части. Прошел один остров, чтобы посмотреть, как оно было. В принципе, родись я раньше, играл бы в первую часть жестко. А так, там примерно все механики удачно перенесены в последующие части, уже в удобном 3д. Короче, играть только жестким олдфагам чтобы вспомнить молодость.

Eu estava procurando jogos com gráficos pré-renderizados, tanto pela estética e serem antigos, quanto por serem leves.

Nunca tive contato com nenhum jogo dessa franquia e peguei esse somente pelos pontos acima, logo no tutorial o game já me fisgou. Senti a mesma vibe de quando joguei pela primeira vez Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (essa mecânica de ver os desejos de cada NPC, e eles serem únicos com atividades individuais), aqui de forma mais complexa.

Todas essas mecânicas de gerenciamento da sua população, salários, rebeliões, qualidade de vida, alimento, saúde, até a música de fundo, tudo me agradou.

Realmente te coloca como El Presidente, apesar do game obviamente pender muito pra lados políticos, você não é forçado a ser um Presidente [strike]Maduro[/strike] Podre, aparentemente existem cenários que levam a isso mas tudo num tom de sátira.

Das Spiele laufen bei mir auf Deutsch, obwohl in der Beschreibung steht, dass die Sprache nicht unterstützt wird und nur in Englisch sein müsste, da sollte doch mal Valve es Korrigieren oder es gibt Personen die sich erst die Rezensionen Lesen.

Bei mir Läuft das Spiel reibungslos unter Win10 und Win11 und es super Spielbar. Es macht richtig Spaß wenn man sich erst einmal in die Tropico Welt vertieft hat dann gibt es kein zurück mehr und wes macht genau soviel Spaß wie die heutigen Anno Teile. Auch nach all den Jahren hat aufgrund der tollen Atmosphäre und der schönen Handgezeichnete Grafik das Spiel nichts verloren was Spaß macht auch wenn alles schon in die Jahre gekommen ist,

Tropico 1 works but is stuck in a bordered window.

Unfortunately, Pirates Cove is hard broke, even after plying with the config files. It crashes constantly and even refuses to start on occasion. Hunting down the 1.2 patch results in a popup that asks from the game to be run in admin mode. It's simply not compatible with newer OS, and trying to run it in compatibility mode yields no positive results.

I didn't get a chance to play T3 before asking fro a refund on the bundle.

I got it at a great price then, and I've had great fun! I don't even mind that they added Tropico 3 after I bought it. 2 dollars for Tropico 3 is a steal! A bargain at twice the price. Looking forward to hearing from Sunny again. As for Tropico 1 and 2. Haven't actually played much of 2, but 1 is great. So many viable ways to play. Personally I always found cutting out religion to be the best way to run the country. If they wanted to worship they should have made those churches smaller and cheaper so I could put them everywhere, that way people wouldn't spend half the day walking there.

Everyone dreams of escaping to an island paradise, In Tropico the islanders dream of escaping El Presidente.

The first in a line of Tropico games. When made it had a rather decent developer blog that expressed points about the choices made during development and was an eye opener for those interesting in games making.

Figured I'd try an "easy" scenario (I'm not used to strategy games, but I want to get into them), and the one I chose was where a plane crashes on a small tropical island and you're elected as the person who will lead them (The goal here being to eventually build a runway so you can escape the island).

Yeeeeah, I ended up running the small island "nation" into the ground, constantly was going into debt, and by the time I was getting the hang of things a commie started running against me in an upcoming election. I had three options:

1. Refuse to hold elections (Couldn't, people were already very unhappy).
2. Hold elections and attempt to win legitimately (Literally impossible for me in just a year).
3. "Hold elections" but attempt to guarantee a win by illegitimate means.

I did the third, and to win I attempted to eliminate my political opponent, sadly in the remaining half a year before the election, nobody actually followed through with the hit, guess that's what I get for being unpopular lol.

So in conclusion, I was elected, basically ran the country purely off of lumber exports and foreign aid (not for a lack of trying to diversify, mind you), and was booted out of office in 8 years via a (relatively) peaceful transfer of power.

Damn I'm bad at this game, 10/10 would run an island nation into the ground again.

・必要とするソフト
→これでないとだめというわけではありませんがバイナリエディタ編集ソフト「Stirling」とフリー解凍ソフト「7-zip」を用意しておくと良いです。
・和訳ファイルを入れる
→指示通りに行うと「ファイルを上書きしますか？」と出ますが上書きして問題ないです。もし問題が発生してもSteamから再インストールを行ってください。
・tropico.exeをバイナリエディタで直す
→編集するファイルは【tropico.exe】です。
　・NoCD化　
　　→パッチを当てるとなぜかCDを必要とされてしまうので一度ゲームを終了して上記のソフトでサイト通りの手順を踏んでください。書き換えは再インストールすると初期化されるので間違えても大丈夫です。
　・画質が荒くて読みにくい、字が小さい
　　→サイト内のフォントサイズの修正項目のパターン③を行ってください。

Much can be said about this unforgiving, slow and cerebral resource management strategy city-builder. A not so classic game, to be honest, as it was never as famous as Sim City 3 or Caesar III, from which this game is heavily inspired. This game is in fact a mix of these games, plus Majesty and other great simulation strategy games from the 90s and early 2000s.

If you are looking for military strategy, and warfare there is none here. This game is set in the 1950s during the Cold War, more specifically, and technology will be stuck to that decade throughout the span of the entire game. No car in this game. You need to read the manual in order to truly grasp it. Be aware it is slow and things do not happen right away, buildings are not built automatically and resources do not get shipped quickly.

The slowness is a calculated part of the game. To do well you need to macro and micromanage the island by unilaterally passing laws, setting immigration laws, cajoling external powers, checking the political affiliation and education of your citizens, making arrests and firing educated people from farms. That on the top of choosing how much to pay barmaids and journalists, where to build your next mining complex and port and whether you want to sell bananas, papayas or just focus on tourism. Oh yeah, elections are coming and people may need something more interesting than looking at grass all day and curing all illnesses with snake oil.

Did I tell you are a dictator and you can order to kill political opponents and create a propaganda machine to elevate your people's perception about your magnificent rule? But you are not as powerful as you think, because either the US or the military will want to seize power themselves if you are not savvy. The Soviets, too far away, won't bulge to protect you from any US invasion, just like in real life, but they may send you some money if you are good to the proleratian cause.

That being said, even if you are on the capitalist side, favouring the US, by winning elections and attracting US tourists, you always play as dictator of a state-controlled economy, so, differently from any Sim City, you can never let the market take care of itself.

Resource-management is as far as similarities go with Caesar III. They are completely different games. In Caesar III the roads work, here in this game, they do not serve to direct haulers, but they function more as a mere idea of a path, or, worse, as a simply decoration to offset pollution. In Caesar III, for example, you only see haulers and soldiers most of the time. Here you will see everyone doing their daily activities. Differently from Caesar III, there is no military combat. In a sense, it is more akin to Majesty. If rebels are attacking, you better hire soldiers, and they may not even fight right away, because they might be busy still in their previous job or, perhaps, enjoying some free time at the gentleman's club.

Also, you cannot control the citizens directly. If they want to go to the clinic, to the pub and enjoy the beach, rather than going to work to deliver the gold to the port, you can't do anything about it, so in that regards, it is very similar to Majesty.

When the game jokes you need an academic degree to play this game, it is not kidding. An understanding of simple Economics and History lessons will help. It is that deep.

Been playing this game for 30 years, so one will never complain about lack of replayability. Music is great. You will be singing "Cafe, cafe, yo quiero cafe" in no time.

Mr, Presidente, your people are waiting for you to rule with wisdom and vision or else make sure you have saved enough money in that shady operation in Switzerland.

This is the best city-builder that's been made since 2001.

Every character has needs and deep motivations, including political parties they support and opinions about the state of things. Then there's inflation which affect the whole economy. Resources need to be manually hauled so the planning of the city is vital to keep things going.

Yes it has graphically aged and it's the only downside I can think of. Mechanically it beats all the Cities: Skylines', Sim Cities', later Tropico entries and Banisheds out of the water.

If graphics don't bother you then give it a go. If they do, say a little prayer that some day someone with a little bit of vision would make another gem like this, it's been 2 decades already.

A long time ago, when pixels seemed bigger and games more difficult, I discovered Tropico for the first time. First it was the first part, and then it was a pirated addition to the second. And now, years later, I fondly recall those carefree days spent building my banana republic and fighting world imperialism.

Tropico is not just an economic strategy, it's a dictator simulator in which you try on the role of El Presidente, ruler of a tropical paradise (or hell, if you're unlucky). Build farms, factories, tourist complexes, cater to factions, fight insurgents, steal money from the treasury... what you don't have to do to stay in power and live a decent life.

Especially vivid memories are associated with Tropico 2: Pirate Cove. This game takes us into the age of piracy, where we become the pirate king, ruling the island of robbers, hiring captains, raiding merchant ships and kidnapping hostages. Does that sound cruel? Yes, but that's the beauty of it! This is a humorous satire on the theme of dictatorship and capitalism, where every mistake you make can lead to rebellion, invasion and loss of power.

What makes Tropico so special?

Charming atmosphere: Cuban motifs, incendiary music and charismatic El Presidente create a unique atmosphere of a tropical paradise.
• Addictive gameplay: Construction, economics, diplomacy, politics — there is always something to do in Tropico. Every time you start a new game, you face new challenges and opportunities.

UPDATE: Something changed, something was patched. It works in windowed mode now. But it only has like 4 resolutions to choose from. Tropico 2 still doesnt.

Used to be one of my favorite games and the game itself still holds up. But it simply can't be played anymore. You might be able to start it on 16-Bit graphics on an XP VM but I haven't been able to get it to start on Win10 and put it in windowed mode so I can literally see anything but pixels. Maybe Kalypso could just stop making the same Tropico again and again and instead see that they fix the games they are still selling. And yea I know, it says I've played for 37 hours. That was in fullscreen mode, barely being able to make out anything because it stretches to your display and nowadays we don't usually view anything in 800x600. I tried all the solutions in the discussions, none worked with the latest Win10. Welp. I hope I will be able to play it again someday.

Sim City 2000 if it were on a tropical island ruled by a dictator and everything in game was trying to overthrow you.

I'm a Sim City fan—I still remember the first time I played Sim City 2000 and everything from the graphics to the real-time city animations blew my mind. I got to a Megalopolis in the first Sim City on Super Nintendo as well. The idea of managing a variety of issues to build a thriving city was fun.

Recently, I decided to try the Tropico series. I own a bunch of them and, as usual, start with the first one to see how it was (so I don't play a new one and then feel like the old ones are a downgrade). I enjoyed the elements that were like Sim City, but it suffered from two issues: the scenarios in my version are not in order to help you learn the game (like RollerCoaster Tycoon), and the game has a strange combination of time restrictions along with all the game mechanics conspiring to overthrow you.

The Positives
-The graphics aren't half-bad. While I wish they had slightly higher resolutions for modern PCs, the various buildings and the people and everything are very cute. It is like Sim City 2000 meets RollerCoaster Tycoon, and I really liked them.

-The basic game mechanics are fun and a nice variation on the City simulation formula. You can funnel money into a slush fund for yourself, and there are a bunch of edicts that you can set to keep yourself in power or help your community survive.

-I did like the fact that there was so much variety in terms of things that drove happiness and things that you could build to help the island prosper. A little of everything makes for a lot to do in the ~50 years you have to play a scenario.

The Negatives
-This might be an issue with buying a digital version with all of the expansions vs. back in the day where you would buy this game with a manual, but the game isn't pick-up-and-play at all. The scenarios are listed in alphabetical order, not starting with the tutorial missions, so you have no idea what anything does and have no easy way of figuring out how the game works by playing it. I should've read the manual first because the internet is not designed to help you learn a game like this; it's more designed to explain things one by one through search (and, even then, not very well), which takes an eternity. Read the manual or start with the starter scenarios and then find out the right order to play them in to learn instead of jumping into a difficult one only to fail over and over again and get frustrated with your lack of progress after hours of attempts.

-The game is very much what they call in modern games an "endless mode" where you have to see how long you'll last before getting ousted. I prefer a Sim City-style game where the point is to build a thriving city and handle issues where even the worst cities can be salvaged. In this game, it's Sim City's "you need more industrial zones" game mechanic times 50; you'll be up $90,000 with a growing, thriving city one year and then be $50,000 in the hole the next, sitting and waiting to see if your Teamsters will deliver enough money to bring you back into the black to fix the problem before the scenario ends or you get overthrown.

-My biggest issue with the game is that you have to build the island in a very specific way that matches either the scenario's objectives or the way that the city has to be built, or you'll fail. I don't mind the former, as scenarios are meant for that exact thing—to show you've mastered the game mechanics (but that's where the alphabetical scenarios ruin that experience). However, for the latter, the game never helped me understand much about the relationship between certain decisions and their consequences. How many Teamsters do I need? How far away do construction buildings need to be from each other to be able to reach? How many homes of which type would be good at what point in the game? No idea. I found that I either tried to build the nicer things early and had no money or build the low-quality stuff and then couldn't raise happiness enough at the end of the tougher scenarios (for example). While I enjoyed the swings that caused me to have to build something else, most of my games ended up with a bunch of unbuilt-but-purchased buildings, negative funds due to lack of teamsters, then my citizens went hungry, and then I just sat for 2-3 years until it fixed itself and I could build something else again. And when I completed a scenario and continued, it often turned out that the whole island would go to hell shortly afterwards. The game is meant to be played in a certain way, and it never helped me figure it out so it was mostly frustrating.

-After playing the scenarios for a while, I assumed that maybe it was like Sim City or Civilization and I should just play the main game to get the whole experience. But unlike those games, the Random Map is just a create-your-own-scenario mode and not really a "play the whole game to get to build everything" mode. I never really used the Edicts and never built a prison. It's just really weird that a game has all of these options and yet the scenarios pigeonhole you into building a certain set of buildings. So it basically turned into a strategy of building farms, ranches, and mines along with cheap buildings -> clinic and church -> industry and tourism and more homes -> power plant -> advanced buildings -> hope and pray that you can balance money, housing, buildings that require electricity, and education to staff the advanced buildings or your citizens will be unhappy and you'll lose. Oh, and your environment seems to always get worse no matter how many gardens I plant everywhere.

Overall, it's just a game that is interesting for a while until it becomes either frustrating or depressing. If I wanted to feel existential dread that nothing I did mattered, I'd play a horror or survival (or survival horror) game. I never really played the Civilization or Sim City scenario packs; I always like just starting a random or custom map and going from beginning to end. This game doesn't really want you to do that; it wants you to play scenario-like play where you have 50 years to complete a goal. And my people were never happy on the harder modes, and you are constantly fighting time or immigration, which constantly makes everyone miserable. And the voice seems to mislead you sometimes, telling you to do things that you can let go for years and not have anything bad happen—in fact, you're better off ignoring him. So I have no idea what to make of this game. I played as long as I could stand, but without tips and tricks to help guide me toward good starter strategies that I could build off of (and no scenario order to help me get better through easier starting campaigns), I ended up playing the harder scenarios too early and lost a lot, taking away a lot of fun of the game. It's not bad, but I'm going to try to the newer ones in the series to see if they fix these issues and make the game more fun in later installments.

This is an old game, but I've always enjoyed it. I'm writing this review because of some of the comments with regard to Tropico 2. In general this one has more problems than the original one. On Windows 11 I am only able to get the game to actually load by using the batch file for the Tropico 2 Safe mode. If your having problems getting this particular game to work, and you have tried updating the compatibility mode and that didn't work, try utilizing that batch file and you should at least be able to get into a game.

Definitely an old school game along the lines of Railroad Tycoon. but there's something about being able to shape the economy and see how you can do with an island at your disposal. I haven't liked the newer versions which have seemed to trade some of the sandbox feel for graphics.

A great start to the series! I had only played Tropico 4 and 5 before playing this, but I was impressed at how much was in the first entry. The only complaints I have is that clouds block large chunks of your view even when you aren't zoomed out that much, there are sometimes delays when rotating the camera, your population and overall happiness aren't on the main screen like they are in future games which was always nice to be able to see at a glance whenever you wanted, it's hard to see where you're putting things down if there are trees in the way (in future games they became translucent which made it way easier), and the game lets you put down buildings over uncompleted roads, so you gotta be careful about not having your road situation be messed up. But aside from those issues, everything else is great, money comes in easily, the soundtrack is great, even the graphics on some of the buildings are impressive given how old the game is. The later games are better, but this one is definitely still worth playing just to see how the franchise got started if nothing else.
