the whole game wraps around a boss fight. it was cute, here and there some questionable collisions and hit windows, some nice mechanics - overall a nice experience...
then you start the way to the boss... you level up, gear up, weaken the boss in a way, prepare for the tower you have to climb to get there... yet, the boss fight takes ages... for something that is the center of the game, to be done over and over again, it is just way too long. did the tour once and to be honest, the boss fight killed it for me.

Overall, its a charming little game, but with some issues that hold it back. The gameplay is basic but serviceable. The basic loop is you do quests/dungeons and get items to become stronger, do more things to get even stronger, then face the final boss. It's not nonstop fighting like some other roguelikes, you can just run through the overworld for the most part if you like.
It's however, at least on normal, a bit too easy. I did my first run by leveling up proper, then beat the boss, never dying a single time. My second run, I just rushed the boss. I was underleveled, but I took a couple special items and all my healing items from the last run and just tanked everything. If you're a higher level gamer, you'll probably find it similarly easy.
Its also lacking build variety that a lot of other roguelikes have. Sure, you can find different items to use, but that's hardly the same as other roguelikes where certain combinations of items are broken or can completely change how you're playing.

Despite what a lot of people are saying, you don't do the whole tutorial every new run, but you do play a bit too long mandatory intro sequence before you can explore the world each run. Would have been much better to just hop right into a new run.

Besides the difficulty, the other two main gripes I have are the puzzles and bosses. There was maybe one or two puzzles that made me think, the rest are so obvious that it's barely or not even a puzzle.
As for the bosses, I only fought two different ones, maybe the rest are better. I did two separate dungeons that each had the same boss, maybe that was just unlucky. It had two attacks and could summon enemies. Personally, I think a boss fight that relies on summoning other enemies is indicative of the boss not being very good, and this rang true as it was a very easy boss.
The only other boss I fought was the final boss. To spoil it, the boss is invulnerable. You stand on glowing tiles that appear and disappear to fill a meter. When that meter fills, different totems spawn to destroy. When you destroy them, the boss is vulnerable for a time, then they become invulnerable again and the cycle repeats.
The boss has only a few attacks...including summoning more enemies. The enemies are often more dangerous than the boss in my opinion, and again plays into the idea that a boss that can't stand on its own isn't a very good boss. Hell, I had more trouble going through the final dungeon than fighting the boss.

In any case, its not a terrible game. If you're looking for an easier roguelike or just find the art style charming, its worth it on a sale. As of this review, it seems like it can go down to $3 at times. The dialogue isn't super childish, but its also not too adult, so it might also be a fun game to have a kid try as well. Otherwise, if you're a more hardcore gamer who likes a challenge, I recommend something else.

I bought the game because I had already played the mobile version and finished it several times, and since February 6th until today I haven't been able to get past the tutorial. The game is perfect, the only problem is that when playing with an Xbox controller it recognizes 2 players, and seriously, that's very irritating. I play solo and I don't need a bug that forces me to control 2 characters; it just made the experience more confusing and unpleasant. If this co-op mode is forced and mandatory, I would much rather have a refund than try to play the way it is.

Swords of Ditto é simplesmente incrível. A arte do jogo é linda demais, tudo muito colorido e cheio de personalidade, dá vontade de parar só pra ficar olhando o cenário. A jogabilidade é divertida, leve e ao mesmo tempo desafiadora na medida certa.
Já zerei o jogo jogando com a minha irmã no PS4, e a experiência em coop foi sensacional, daqueles jogos que rendem risada, tensão e momentos marcantes. Dá pra ver que o jogo foi feito com carinho, tanto no visual quanto na trilha sonora.
Recomendo demais pra quem curte jogos com estilo único, coop local e uma vibe divertida sem perder a profundidade. Um jogão

Alright, listen. I skimmed some of the other reviews to try and find out why this game still holds a "Mixed" rating on Steam, but there doesn't seem to be a consistent consensus on why, so I'm just gonna talk about it like those reviews don't exist, because this is a very enjoyable little game!

Following in the vein of Adventure Time: Secret of The Nameless Kingdom, The Swords of Ditto seeks to combine classic top-down-Zelda-like gameplay with a cute, hand-drawn cartoon feel (in this case, it loosely reminds me of We Bare Bears). But although it's got a charming "kids' toys and imagination" theme to it, the game is much more challenging than it appears on the surface, so don't write it off as something only your baby nieces and nephews will want to play. It's not DIFFICULT, per se, but certainly challenging, which is something that I always appreciate in a game!

It's also not quite appropriate to call this game a "roguelike", though it does share some elements with that description, so maybe "roguelite" is more apt. The game DOES feature permadeath, but only during the "final boss tower climb" sequence. The world is randomly re-generated every time you perma-die, but always features the same specific recurring landmarks to help you take down the final boss. And the story that unfolds requires you to recurse through this process about 5 times to see it to the end. I can see that being a turn-off for some folks, but I enjoyed the gameplay loop enough that I had no problem sticking to it and eventually completing it after about 30 hours of total play. Your mileage may vary, but hey, it's also something you can just replay indefinitely if you really wanna.

If there's anything to actually complain about, it's that a lot of the repeated stock dialogue (scripted, no voice-over) that plays at key points during each loop is a little lackluster, but it's also a breeze to skip through it, so even that's kinda moot. Some of the per-loop modifiers - the "Mormo's Curse" subtitle in action - are a bit mean (CURSE YOU NEMESIS!), but there are items in-game to help mitigate that, so don't be afraid to look up a guide or ask for tips if you find yourself getting frustrated.

All in all, I legitimately don't know why the game's name is so tarnished on Steam. It wasn't a maximum-thrill life-changing experience or anything, but it sure was fun and worth the price. I loved the presentation and the engaging gameplay. Highly recommended for fans of Zelda Randomizers!

Gráficos lindíssimos — o visual do jogo é um verdadeiro colírio para os olhos, com um estilo artístico vibrante e cheio de personalidade.

Jogabilidade simples e fluida — fácil de pegar e jogar, sem complicações. Ideal tanto para quem quer relaxar quanto para quem curte uma boa aventura.

HUD de seleção de armas e itens — um destaque à parte! Intuitiva, prática e tão bem feita que muitos outros jogos deveriam se inspirar nela.

Problemas técnicos? Quase nenhum. Em mais de 70 horas de jogo, só notei um ou outro detalhe insignificante, nada que atrapalhe a experiência.

Único ponto negativo: o jogo às vezes tenta se estender artificialmente para parecer maior do que é. Não precisava disso — ele já é ótimo por si só!

✅ No geral, uma experiência super divertida e carismática. Recomendo demais!

Tried to pick this game back up multiple times.
The game has a great art style and soundtrack fits the feel. However the loop is not fun. The worst part about dying isn't the reset, it's because you replay the tutorial every. single. time. After a few deaths you just quit out of annoyance. The game is challenging but not impossible and is similar enough on each loop for you to learn from your mistakes.
I just can't give this a thumbs up when I don't even want to finish a loop.
I regret my purchase.

It's pretty rare, but sometimes I play games that just leave me speechless... and not because they are really good. I get a dislike for those games, try to write my experiences with them and then I realize my mind is failing to come up with paragraphs for my reviews. The Swords of Ditto is one of these games; I played it, I dropped it very soon because I was not enjoying it, and now I don't even know how to properly start this whole thing...
Actually wait... that's literally how the game behaves too. Let's go with that.

[h2]Story? Who cares?[/h2]
The Swords of Ditto is a game that has a terrible introductory sequence. The first 20 minutes of the game is just a bunch of straightforward "go from A to B" quests with almost zero story development. Your character is a rando who is washed up on a shore and is woken up by a dungbeetle spirit named Puku. Without any explanations, Puku tells you to follow some waypoints in order to go retrieve a sword, become "The Sword of Ditto" and then immediately go fight the main bad guy. You arrive at the boss arena, the antagonist of the story (named Mormo) throws a meta joke about how nothing has been explained to you, and one shots you to death.
The game then fast forward to 100 years later when the world is ruled by Mormo. You take control of a new character, then Puku appears and has you following waypoints AGAIN. You collect the previous character's gear from their grave, follow the waypoints to get introduced to shops at a town nearby, and meet with a character that says you need to find and destroy Mormo's power sources before facing them. Then you are left to traverse the land on your own, with your absolutely not helpful and frankly unbearable guide appearing from time to time to state the obvious or drop some bad jokes.
The game barely has any story, yet still doesn't use it properly and only tries to get you to start the game as fast as possible. Some may consider this to be a good thing, yet in absence of proper goals and a sense of urgency, everything breaks apart. You always hear that people are under oppression and the world needs saving, yet nothing seems to be at stake. Every player death causes a 100 year time skip until the next hero arises, and yet the world looks the same after each skip, with people going on with their lives like normal. You can even find a random person standing right next to Mormo's castle, just a few meters away from monsters, complaining about its color! So what's the problem here? What is so bad about this bad guy that requires us to kill them and "free everyone from their tyranny"?

[h2]Slow and steady [strike]wins the race[/strike] bores you out of your mind[/h2]
Lack of urgency and a meaningful end goal is one thing, but having the road to achieve the ending actually feeling boring and unrewarding is another thing.
The only goal you have in this game is to kill Mormo; But you don't accomplish this task by following a series of interconnected events leading to a definitive finale. In fact, you can challenge Mormo right in the very beginning and try to beat them. However, that would be incredibly challenging to accomplish, as there's an experience system in the game which determines how hard it will be.
Each of the monsters in the game have a certain level, and if their level is higher than yours, that means they are going to absorb more damage and hit very hard. To even the odds, you need to kill monsters or take on the side quests that random NPCs might want to give you, gathering enough XP to level up. Only then you are able to access high level areas with relative challenge and try to beat Mormo. Now this would not have been as bad as it is, if the gameplay was actually fun.
The thing is, everything in the game is SO SLOW. The introduction is slow, the progression is slow, the main character's movement speed is slow, the EXP accumulation is slow... The whole game feels like a boring, grindy slog. This, coupled with the game's cartoony presentation and everything else I've talked about so far, gives this feeling that maybe the game was intended to be played by the kids. I mean, why else would it be this slow and not have good storytelling either? Except this assumption is not true either.

[h2]Who is this game for?[/h2]
Despite all of what I said so far, the default experience of the game is not really geared towards younger players as it's pretty challenging for a variety of reasons. The enemies dish out a lot of damage, are pretty aggressive, attack whenever they are able to and there are many times when multiple enemies of various types gang up on you. In these situations, it's pretty easy to get overwhelmed, or get hit by an attack that you were not expecting as the visual effects caused by hitting enemies can conceal them.
Not only that, there's an unfortunate limitation in the combat system that forbids you from cancelling your attacks. If you are engaging in combat with an enemy and suddenly notice an attack coming up, you will not be able to roll out of the way until your own attack animation is finished. Now this can be manageable, but only if you are not surrounded by various types of enemies.
And then we have the roguelite elements...

[h2]For the love of God, STOP MAKING EVERYTHING A ROGUELITE!!![/h2]
Yes, you read that right. This game uses a variety of roguelite elements such as procedural generation for its dungeons, randomization of world map tiles and a permadeath mechanic; And I'll be honest with you: The game did not need them. These roguelite elements feel out of place as they literally don't add anything to the game and instead feel like they are wasting your time.
Back when the game launched, it forced a 24 hour in-game time limit upon the players. What I mean is, you had a limited time to level up and gather resources and when it ended, you had to face the final boss whether or not you were ready for it. This caused a lot of backlash from the players and is partly responsible for the mixed review rating the game has at the time of writing this review. The devs later tweaked this mechanic and changed it in the "Mormo's Curse" update, but not only many had already moved on from the game at that point, but the way they "fixed" the problem just caused more problems.
Right now, the game does not impose the time limit on you until you beat the boss for the first time; A fact that is not told to the player in either the menu texts or the story dialogues as they still mention you only have 24 hours, causing confusion as a result. It also allows you to turn the timer off and explore the map at your pace, with all the map/dungeon shuffling happening whenever you die but... seriously, what's the point of that?
We have already established that the world barely changes and never properly reflects the story events or builds upon them. We know the gameplay is unappealing, grindy and boring. And now, we find out that the roguelite elements are so excessive and worthless, that you can easily take them out with no repercussions! So what value does this game have? Why should I play it?

The Swords of Ditto is EXACTLY what I hate about the roguelite craze. A game which does not need roguelite elements tries to incorporate them anyway, but does it in such a flawed manner that sharply drops the experience's quality instead. Had the game focused on being a normal game and focused of refining its experience, we could have had something special on our hands right now. But, alas, this has not happened.

Boring, grindy and a slog to go through. If it was a normal Zelda-like and the dev time was not wasted on implementing unnecessary roguelite elements, we could have had something special here.

The "Mixed" rating for this game is a travesty, it does not deserve a rating that low.

Most of the negative reviews appear to be people that didn't realize this was a Rogue-like/lite game:
-Yes, you start over when you die (but can spend currency you earned during that playthru to send items to your next character.
- No, you don't go thru the whole "tutorial" again -- its your traditional Rogue-like/lite gameplay loop.

C'est un Oui, MAIS:
- Le jeu a été pensé pour la console, et a donc des limitations lié à la manette qui n'ont pas été changée sur pc, même si heureusement on peut au moins bind les touches de la souris, parmi ces limitations:
- Classique tu dois te déplacer dans la direction où tu veux attaquer, direction avec la souris ? ça existe ?
- Très souvent, le jeu ne considère pas qu'on appuye sur une touche, il faut faire une autre action, par ex pour utiliser des objets
- Petit auto-aim pour viser, c'est quoi la souris encore ?
- Étant une roguelite, les énigmes sont randomizée, mais parfois, un élément random se met dedans et la bloque complètement, ça peut être de petit donjons ou des énigmes dans des donjons principaux qui softlock complétement
- Y a pas mal de petits bugs qui peuvent détruire l'expérience de jeu, mention spéciale à un donjon principale où la touche d'ouverture de coffre était comme désactivée dans certaines salles, donc impossible d'avancer avec les clés
- Parfois j'ai l'impression que les dév se mettent juste des bâtons dans les roues, à la seconde fois où j'ai fini le jeu, ça a poussé l'éther (mécanique spéciale) à se mettre à fond, en mettant un genre de filtre flou à tout le jeu, ça fais mal aux yeux, ça reste toute la run (env 4h), bref c'est là où je me suis stoppé tellement c'est pas agréable de jouer dans ces conditions

Ce jeu en apparence amusant et bien pensé laisse dévoilé son véritable visage au bout de plusieurs minutes de jeux.
Le côté rogue lite tant vanté n'est pas si bien amené avec une map qui se ressemble à chaque try et qui est vide de chez vide, try qui en passant prenne 1h ou 2 (ce qui est bcp trop long pr un rogue). Le mode Hard est uniquement un nid à frustration ou les mobs deviennent des sacs à PV et comme si cela ne suffisait pas le système de combat est mou et répétitif. Les boss et l'histoire sont également oubliable malgré la maigre tentative d'instaurer un lore.
Au niveau du positif, c'est beau et les musiques sont l'une des seules choses qui vont vous faire persévérer pour voir la fin du jeu.

En bref le jeu est assez décevant, on en attend bcp plus d'un rogue like / zelda like et c'est bien dommage que le jeu se vautre avec autant de petites erreurs qui auraient pu être corrigées s'ils avaient testé leur jeu.

Played a few hours. Looks nice, but a bit complex and neither combat nor puzzles feel great.
Tighter exposition, shorter tutorial, and more fun combat/puzzles could take it to Thumbs-Up territory for us.

Prefer Cats Quest series or Unsighted for local co-op.
Would look forward to a more refined game from the devs!

Por si tienes este titulo en tu biblioteca y nunca lo has jugado o lo deseas comprar, aquí te dejo lo que en mi camino al platino de este juego pude observar y espero te sirva.

El juego no explica casi nada, te tienes que basar de lo poco que te dice el juego y seguir guías, en particular seguí una de aquí en Steam que me ayudo con algunos logros, el juego es tipo Rouge-like por lo que cada partida es diferente, cabe mencionar que si quieres sacar el final verdadero del juego hay que terminarlo 5 veces, lo cual lo hace algo repetitivo y si vas por el platino como yo se hace muy cansado y repetitivo porque por lo menos para mi, me tomo mas de 10 partidas entre que no explican nada y encontrar todos los coleccionables.

El apartado gráfico es muy bonito y la banda sonora esta muy bien, en algunos momentos relajante, ademas tiene algunos errores en algunas mazmorras y hay algunos bugs o glitches de los que se puede abusar que hacen que el juego se un poco ameno.

The fact this is sitting at Mixed reviews utterly flabbergasts me. I can only assume it's from people expecting this to be a clone of Zelda - it isn't, not by a longshot. If that's what you're hoping for, you'll not enjoy this.

Swords of Ditto does have a few elements shared with older Zelda titles - unlocking new gadgets can unlock options for areas previously explored, and each area is a distinct tile that you travel between. You also have a limited loadout of things to use that you can change at any time.

That's where the similarities end however. Swords of Ditto has much more of an RPG focus than Zelda, rather than an adventure focus. Equipment and stats are upgradable in many ways. The way you setup your equipment will have a large effect on how you play (I myself use poison and range predominantly), and figuring out how you want to set yourself is fun, because you can experiment without issue. Despite the tag, I don't know that I'd call this a Roguelike either. Runs don't end because you die, and things aren't super random. Enemies might be randomized, but maps and the like are hand-placed.

Sound, visuals and just general presentation manage to be both cute, yet tell a surprisingly adult story. I obviously am nowhere near the end of the game, but the collectable messages and the like tell a pretty interesting story where the "good guy" is an ephemeral concept. As usual, Devolver Digital publishes a game with a cute artstyle that manages to be way deeper than that would suggest. Lastly, the value. Even at full pop, this is under $20 Canadian, and routinely goes on sale for half that or even less. This is worth that by a country mile, and I feel a little guilty for having gotten this at 75% off on sale.

O jogo é bem interessante, tem sistema de ciclos, algo estranho e bom, mas é muito diversificado, não são ciclos iguais, e para mim ja ganha pontos.
O artstyle é muito fofa, os combates são interessantes.
O chato é que apesar dos ciclos serem diversificados, o objetivo é o mesmo, o que pode ser chato depois de um tempo.
Acho que compensa, mas talvez em promoção.

My wife and I enjoyed every bit of this cute rouge-like co-op game, the combat, the story, the items, and the random challenges. Until the ending - which basically sums up to "the world is like this because of you" - that doesn't leave any way to fix the world in any capacity before rolling the credits.

A great game with a great story but a lackluster ending. 3/5

我當初就係因為美術畫風而買嘅,結果到頭來除咗美術之外一無是處,屌你老母臭閪 ! garbage !

遊戲本身嘅機制好明顯係"借鑒"薩爾達+rogue like.框架係唔錯嘅.睇得出想喺遊戲入面加入自己嘅特色.但係內容太貧瘠,膚淺.關卡設計太無聊,智障.整體虎頭蛇尾.

因為關卡同地圖靠程序隨機生成,我多次試過喺地牢闖關嘅過程中遇到根本無法過版或者需要某個道具先可以過版而前期絕對無可能獲得,而陷入死循環嘅bug. 即係壞save,而且幾率好高.

如果一個地圖佢本身無限制你前進任何嘅關卡[地牢]而又無對呢啲關卡作出說明指引.而幾乎所有關卡,甚至初始關卡,都需要外力因素先可以正常過關[例如商店嘅道具/其他關卡嘅關鍵道具等等].前期無法正常獲得呢啲外力因素,又或者要靠開局運氣幾率.而遊戲機制係限時嘅,唔會俾足夠時間你探索.咁樣嘅遊戲本身就是垃圾.

最大嘅敗筆係限時機制以及等級,開局一頭霧水,又無教學又無指引,絕大部分NPC都係廢話,唔會留低有用資訊,少部分有用嘅NPC要求你收集某啲素材幫你強化,如果你唔死個好幾次根本無可能儲到錢買素材.因為錢實在太難刷.而且你死嘅時候需要消耗你啲錢換取邊啲道具可以傳俾下一世.當你亂行探索得差唔多果陣,時間結束 !推你去打final boss,然後俾佢無情碾壓,死撚咗重新開局,所有嘢重新嚟過.NPC/商店/地牢全部隨機打散嗮.你以為可以通過上一世繼承嘅等級碾壓小怪&boss?太天真了.無論你升幾LV都好,小怪同boss永遠俾你高幾LV.基本上你嘅等級只係擺設,傷害顯示嘅數值越來越大罷了.殺一隻嘍啰怪唔會變得勁咗,依然都係要斬咁多刀.

而咁撚垃圾嘅遊戲要連續爆6次機先可以打真·boss.睇到真·結局.我真係屌你老母啊 !
點解佢要執著打6次?2次內唔得?咪就係因為內容太過貧瘠唔足以支撐遊玩時間以至於要你一次又一次枯燥地反復做同一件事,嚟抵消空白嘅時間.

成年人要面對嘅係狀況,永遠係遊戲太多,時間太少.我點解要為隻咁嘅垃圾浪費自己啲時間?!

真係好撚柒後悔買隻咁嘅垃圾,爽唔到不特止,還要做免費嘅bug測試員.完全係騙局 !

Caraca, eu sei lá como descrever o que foi jogar Sword of Ditto...O jogo não é ruim, mas é tão repetitivo que...ERGH!

Os graficos são lindinhos, a gameplay é simples porém funcional e cumpre seu papel, a trilha sonora é OK, e pra mim a cereja do bolo foi o MULTIPLAYER LOCAL, que está cada vez mais escasso nos videogames, mas...Nem isso salva o quanto esse jogo é massante! O combate ser simples não seria um problema se os inimigos fossem interessantes, coisa que NÃO SÃO, pois são faceis e repetitivos demais. O mapa ser até que bem vasto seria algo ótimo, se toda a exploração que ele entrega não se baseasse em procurar dungeons o tempo todo, coisa que TAMBÉM SERIA LEGAL de se fazer, se não fosse o fato de que isso se torna uma tarefa meio massante após a 2 ou 3 caverna que você adentra, pois os puzzles internos são simples demais (isso quando tem puzzle), os inimigos são sempre mais do mesmo, e no final, você quase sempre recebe como premio um cristal (que você talvez nem venha a usar) ou um HOT DOG. E a história...bom, ela existe, mas é tão rasa quanto uma colher de sopa, então...meh!
A minha maior surpresa com relação a este jogo foi sem querer querendo descobrir que ele tinha coop, e isso tornou as coisas mais divertidas, mas não menos cansativas, pois o jogo apresenta mais do mesmo do começo ao fim...

Ditto isso, Sword of Ditto pode até ser uma carta de amor escancarada a Legend of Zelda, mas ser uma carta de amor de uma franquia incrivel não o fez ser tão incrivel quanto a sua inspiração, pois o jogo apesar de divertido e bonitinho, é repetitivo demais!

Looks like a great game but the developer appears to be closed down and it does not work with two xbox controllers. Other people in the forum seem to have similar issues.

Requested refund. Shame since it looked fun for local co-op but the bindings for 2nd player were all messed up.
