So this was an interesting experience. I will say, it's not without flaws: the overreliance on left AND right clicking everything, examining things over and over, certain puzzles being too fiddly or slow, can be annoying. And the pacing isn't smooth, it goes: short intro, decent intrigue, cripplingly slow annoyance, mild intrigue, all wrapped up. As you work towards "finding Chapter 2" and working through it, the puzzles change and become improperly designed (with the sundial puzzle relying on completely random info rather than clues you can find or the crossword puzzle needing you to do something illogical to get the answer or, as I did, find the correct name but with an incorrect spelling).
However, while I did start to lose interest during that dip, while it did irk me, after that section it actually picked up again. In fact, I dare say it accelerated rapidly, it feels like the ending hit almost immediately after that section. But it actually wrapped up fairly well, with a decent twist, all the loose ends tied up, and somewhat realistic dramatic flair. Plus, as I was aiming for the "I got your back" achievement, it really gave that last twist a nice moment of humanity to it all. And I did like the idea of flipping between a fictional story and real life to solve puzzles.
I do, seriously, want anyone planning to buy this to be aware that the dip in gameplay will occur and will be the worst part about it. But, before and after that dip, you might genuinely enjoy it as it has that old point-and-click feeling you likely picked it up for. So, if you can forgive the flaws and live with them, it's pretty decent.
The game starts off well, with an appealing storyline on paper.
But it quickly loses its appeal, with uninspired puzzles and linear gameplay. You get bored very quickly and want to play something else.
It's a big disappointment, which is a shame.
I paid less than a euro for it, and I think it's a waste of money.
Even if it were free, I wouldn't recommend it.

The storyline is forced, the puzzles are rubbish. The menus and save system are from another era, and unfortunately there's a bug that causes you to lose control of the mouse and can happen at any time.
I'm playing the game with a walkthrough and even that makes it very tedious.
Seriously, play something else, don't waste your time.

This game is just awful.
I don’t think there was a single point at which I had any idea what the actual ♥♥♥♥ it wanted me to do. I mostly stumbled into progressing the story by interacting with everything, and even when I knew what I had to do, implementing the solutions was often so obtuse I still needed to look at a guide (looking at you, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ compass horse). This may be the worst-designed point-and-click I’ve ever played. Ten years after Wadjet Eye! Ten years!
The self-satisfied, navel-gazey story was insufferable. The game was so, so in love with how supposedly clever it was, which frankly was probably part of why the puzzle design was so bad. But also it was so busy thinking it was engaging it never spent time actually being engaging, and was actually insanely trite. I saw someone in a Steam forum thread say, “‘Wait, when did we learn that?’ might as well have been the subtitle of this game,” and it’s an accurate comment.
Then there’s the ugly, blurry pixel art, the miserable UI, the terrible demarcation of interactables, the weird bug where text would start autoskipping and I’d have to restart to fix it which meant hitting ALT-F4 because there’s no ‘quit’ button in the interface… This is far and away the worst of the point-and-click style detective games I’ve played. I may have hated this more than Chicken Police. The entire experience was just horrid from top to bottom.
About two hours in I managed to softlock myself by going to destinations in the wrong order, and I spent about 15 minutes trying to troubleshoot before going, “This game has made me miserable from top to bottom, why am I trying so hard to keep playing it?” and quitting. Nothing on god’s green earth could possess me to start this game over.
Unsurprisingly, based on Steam achievements, only 20% of people complete the first puzzle and only 9% finish the game, which is, frankly, high. To put that in perspective, 57% of people complete Tangle Tower. 50% finish Blackwell Unbound. 20% unlock [i]everything[/i] in Seance at Blake Manor, something that took me almost 20 hours! [i]This game is a nightmare.[/i]
Ich bin noch nicht am Ende des Spieles angelangt, aber ich kann es empfehlen, vor allen Dingen macht man bei dem Preis im Sale nicht verkehrt.
Das Spiel ist nicht perfekt aber es hat eine interessante Krimi Hauptstory, dazu eine Fantasy Story aus dem verschollenen Buch des Verstorbenen Autors und Journalisten um den sich die Handlung dreht. Die Steuerung ist auch in Ordnung. Die Grafik ist halt Pixelgrafik, sieht halt nicht so schön, so dass man Gegenstände auch schwieriger erkennt. Ist aber beim dem Spiel nicht so das Problem. Bei der Übersetzung ist auch nicht alles so perfekt, neben kleineren Übersetzungsfehler wie Du und Sie bei seinem Freund, gab es auch eine nicht genaue Übersetzung bei dem Sonnenuhren Rätsel, aufgrund deren
ich nicht auf die Lösung kam. Ansonsten sind die die Rätsel bisher nachvollziehbar, auch wenn es teilweise länger gedauert hat, bis ich Sie gelöst habe. Bisher bin ich insgesamt zufrieden mit dem Spiel,
I stayed for the story...this game is INSANELY HARD even with a precise GUIDE. It includes: pixel hunting, very hard timed puzzles (+pixel hunting), puzzles with 0 clues given, hard exit screens, dialogs puzzles with 0 clues, old school 80 interface (please save often you can lose it all) The interface is terrible for saving and loadind and implies many many bugs and freezes. I had to restart the full computer to compete the various puzzles and fight through the freezes and stuck. It also has an abrubt illogical ending. (worst ending ever) I hesitate between 0/10 and 10/10 because it has a soul and it has nice pixel art. (P.S: I will never visit SWEDEN because of this terrible game; i have a bad feeling this game is representative of this country: PAINFUL and COLD)

Everything is so wrong. there's no menu, so i cant save, i have to start over if i exit and if i make a mistake in the game there are irreversible things, for example, i have to pour water from the well in the bowl, and i poured water from the sink, its imposible to progress now SO I HAVE TO START OVER ALL THE GAME FROM THE BEGINNING. something is 100% odd.
The graphics are very simple, but the puzzles are great.
And... you can't beat the prize of 2€ for a full-voiced adventure.
It's a very good classic-style point-and-click adventure game but the Scandi crime setting may be a little dry for most.

La historia está muy interesante hasta que llegas al final y de repente el autor te mete sus f3tiches en la historia sin avisar. El final realmente deja mal sabor de boca y te hace sentir que todas las horas que pasaste investigando y recopilando los capítulos del libro no sirvieron para nada.
Hay una trama secundario de un periodista al que ayudas a investigar una red de tráfico de armas pero siento que el propio juego deja de lado esta subtrama y se olvida de ella. Puedes darle la información que descubres o no pero esto no cambia el final.
El personaje del amigo con el que hablas por teléfono no aporta nada a la historia y no sé por qué está ahí. Pensé que te darían un logro si hablabas con él muchas veces pero ni eso.

A ver... el juego en si es una aventura point and CLICK con una historia algo pobre pero que te entretiene lo suficiente como para llegar al final.
La musica y los graficos estan bastante bien hechos, con ese estilo retro de los 80-90. Tiene buenos sonidos y ambientacion, Puzzles safables dentro de todo... pero la historia si bien no esta tan mal en cuanto a la trama, tiene una ejecucion pobrisima.
Basicamente nos contrata una mujer para investigar donde esta la herencia del padre rico que pertenecia como a una secta religiosa que vende indulgencias a locos que quieren "vivir en el paraiso", nada raro, algo comun, pero es como que a partir de ahi, perdes el hilo y te vas yendo del Presente a una especie de realidad pasada que parece que lees en un cuento y no tiene mucho sentido a donde vas. Al final es como que "volves al libro" no se entiende nada.
Tiene logros y CROMOS que dan algo mas de valor al titulo.
Realmente merece un voto neutral o negativo, pero debido a que cuesta poco y dentro de todo esta bien hecho lo dejo en pulgar arriba, pero salvo que seas MUY FAN del genero, no creo que te guste

The Samaritan Paradox es una aventura gráfica muy mala. Debí sospecharlo cuando uno de los primeros puzles del juego consiste en darle un libro a un hombre que está delante de un cuadro para que se quede dormido leyéndolo, para a continuación utilizar una sierra mecánica en la pared trasera en la que está el cuadro (aprovechando que los ronquidos del hombre enmascaran el ruido), y por último emplear un cuchillo en la parte trasera del cuadro. Todo para coger un papel que hay detrás del cuadro. Y esto es de lo menos absurdo de un juego que, encima, se intenta tomar en serio.
I have read some of the comments and wanted to add a positive review because I loved this game. I have played a lot of point n click games, so maybe it helped. I have not found the puzzles as difficult as described by some players. I had to take a look to the walkthrough only once, for the puzzle on the bunker (and only because I lacked the basic knowledge to solve the 4th riddle).
I found the atmosphere of this game surprisingly good and I thoroughly enjoyed discovering every levels of this story (related to the journalist, to the private investigator, to the Bergwall family or even to the fantasy world around Freja that works quite well), I found main characters interesting and was definitely eager to know more.
Regarding the darker aspects of the story, there are subtle hints (I do not want to spoil, but be careful to some dialogues and think about the seemingly randomly behavior of Patrik) that point into this direction. I understand this may be disturbing, but I think the ending makes sense and I am perfectly happy with it. It seems to me quite positive, yes sh*t happens but the characters still live on. Which leads me to another understanding of the title: no good without evil.
In [i]the Samaritan Paradox[/i] Ord Salamon, a student with a knack for cryptography is procrastinating so hard on his PhD-thesis that when he finds a code on a novel indicating that the deceased author has written another, “secret” book, he contacts the authors daughter Sara. She suspects that the secret book leads to her inheritance but does not want to look – if you do, she will share…
This a classical point-and-click-adventure with nice ideas: Next to the grey setting of the Sweden in 1984 there is the world of the secret book, in which you adventure as Freja in a green fantasy setting. It’s a great contrast. Still, although I somehow liked the game, I cannot recommend it:
There are issues with the mechanics: Sometimes the area to go to another place is so small that it is hard to find. But more importantly, the story is “half baked” and does not come together in the end. I will have to get into spoilers, so if you want to play, stop reading …
[Spoiler] So as mentioned the game has a main plot (hunting the book), a “fantasy plot” (playing its chapters) and a minor side plot about weapons smuggling
None of them function.
The fantasy plot has some puzzles that give you hints for your real-life hunt. But as good as the idea is and as much as I liked the style of that setting, the story is bland, does not integrate with the real world and serves only to have a “shocking” reveal at the end. The side plot with the weapons smuggling is foreshadowed smoothly but leads nowhere. Game wise is used to change the pacing, introducing some sneak and “act-fast” situations and to have an action ending. But it is incomplete, not given the gravitas and feeling of danger it should elicit. While investigating a missing chapter, you stumble over a weapon smuggling operation “Samaritan” (yes…). It delivers weapons deliberately to dictators and possible war criminals. This could have been a chance to introduce tension and pressure, raising the stakes. But it was not used in this fashion. The side-plot suddenly features Saras brother Patrick, who was introduced earlier having started his own investigation into his father’s death, as a villain. But it is not clear why those story elements were mixed and how that made sense, i.e. why Parick was involved with the weapons smuggling or why he would bring attention to the operation by acting the way he does. The bad guys show up in the end and even shoot you, but not to silence you – no, Patrick wants to reveal the “shocking” twist to his sister, you intervene and get a bullet for your effort (you survive).
This brings us to the main plot: The basic idea of hunting for a “secret book” with a message is great. As so often some of the puzzles are contrived and a bit out there. However, there are elements that break the “suspension of disbelief”. The best example is the start: For some reason the developers decided that Ord does not find the code flipping through the book. They wanted him to discover it on the dustjacket. So, it was hidden in the ISBN code… the International Standard Book Number, which as the name suggests is standardized and assigned by a third party. Therefore, creating one that contains a specific code seems impossible. Also, an “odd” ISBN code would lead to all sorts of problems and therefore would be discovered fast. Of course, this is a nitpick, but it is an unnecessary choice, and it stands out. Also, Ord’s “gift” for cracking cyphers that is featured heavily in the introduction is not really utilized after this first puzzle.
Another major problem is that the two layer story telling of the real world and the fantasy world are not really interwoven. The obvious route, that each chapter reveals something about the family history or leads to Sara remembering something was not taken. You solve the puzzles and continue; Sara has nothing to do with you understanding the book’s meaning. This is a strange choice since it makes the “shocking” reveal in the end a sudden occurrence that is neither prepared nor foreshadowed: After you finish the fantasy story the heroin returns to a farmer that had given her shelter and advice before. The final scene is them embracing each other and getting sensual. While it was implied that the man was older and served little bit as a mentor, he also was living alone and was portrayed as a nice and well-balanced man. Therefore, not the worst choice for a partner. Well, it turns out it is not the bland happy ending for a bland fantasy story it seems to be… Ord explains, the farmer is supposed to be the father/author and since the heroin clearly is Sara, the “shocking” reveal is that the book was not about a secret inheritance but about the fact that the father sexually abused his daughter. Since she “forgot” all about this and he wanted to come clean/unburden his consciousness, he chose that (rather weird) approach. We can now discuss if such a topic is suited for a video game all together. I would argue that it is, if done intelligently and thoughtfully. BUT this was not the case. For me it was slapped on, as a “shock” ending (this is why I used inverted commas throughout this review) – and hence my assessment that the story was not told well.
Last, I would like to talk about the title, that really bugged me:
Wikipedia tells us “A paradox is a logically self-contradictory statement or a statement that runs contrary to one's expectation. […] Informally, the term is often used to describe a counterintuitive result.” So, Paradox indicates that the outcome of what is considered the act of a Samaritan is the opposite of what one would expect.
What is a Samaritan? The term comes from the New Testament. When asked “Who is one’s neighbor [one should love]?” Jesus tells a story: A man, most likely a Jew (this is relevant) is robbed and left to die. Then, one after another, three men come across him. The first two are fellow jews and it is indicated that they know Gods law and are believers. However, both fear becoming victims themselves and hurry away without helping. The third man is a Samaritan, which as far I as I understand it was group of people that were partly Jewish but married also non-jews and were accused of not “keeping” the law by the more “orthodox” communities. The Samaritans were despised and looked upon by many groups within the Jewish community, and they themselves therefor were not fond of the “orthodox” believers. This is important, because from the societal perspective the third man was the one of which it was the least expected to help the victim. However, not only did he stop and help the man, but he even takes him to a roadhouse, pays and asks that he is cared for and visits him afterwards… This is where we get our term (good) Samaritan from: A person that renders help, although he is not obliged to and maybe inconveniencing himself or even put himself in danger…
Why include a bible lesson? Because by no stretch of the imagination Ord is a “good Samaritan”. He is a nice guy, and he is willing to help, but he does so because he is curious and is offered a reward. It is even explicitly stated that he has money problems. It is also clear that Sara and her family do not have “enough”. I.e. she must immediately sell a painting to keep her parents’ house and goes on (while they are still looking for hints for the book) to sell more … The only time Samaritan is referred to is when the smuggling operation is named that way, and that is not relevant. I find this frustrating because with a little bit more effort there could have been a real [i] Samaritan Paradox[/i] posing some interesting moral questions. But so, it seems they only were looking for a cool title… enough said, thanks if you read all of this. I really thought a lot about that game and its frustrating elements afterward as you can see. [/spoiler]
All in all, although it is cheap, I would recommend you play something else. There are a lot more interesting and thought-through games out there.

After a couple minutes voice audio disappears and wherever you click, the dialogue continues, making it impossible to go to settings, inventory, etc. It goes on and on. No way to quit the game, I dont find any button for it, which means I have to close session on my computer (when I try to quit the game in task manager it does not work either). Is it only me?

Quite good point+click game with very interesting and original story and brutal puzzles. Thankfully there is a video walkthrough on YT. At any case I enjoyed this one despite insane puzzles and I recommend for people who like mystery stories.

I can't believe I forgot to review this game. I played through a ton of classic adventure games back then, and this one really stuck with me. Something about the particular quality of audio that is haunting, the music is nice, the environments bleak and real feeling.
Yeah, the story gets quite daringly heavy, but I don't think that makes it bad
Since I've woken up in a good mood, I'm just going to say that I farmed this for the cards and now I'm uninstalling it... I can't even remember why I bought this. What was I thinking? Too old school for me. No patience for it. I couldn't even find my inventory. But if you're into old school type games, pixelated graphics and stuff for nostalgia and have more patience than me with games then maybe you'll enjoy it - though I guess you could tell all of that just from looking at the screenshots, therefore rendering this review pretty worthless except for satisfying my need to review every game I play! 😊

The Samaritan Paradox is an okay game that got rushed at the end and left some big plot holes.
The sound design is great, the dub is good, most puzzles are fun and logic, but a few are hard or don't give enough clues.
The ending is abrupt.
The game has some technical problems, if you try to tab out or click Esc the game crashes, so save frequently.
All in all my rating is 7/10, recommended, especially for only 1€ or less if it's on sale.

Докторская работа из-за депрессии не пишется и ничего хорошего будущего не предвещает. Но друг, который очень сильно волнуется за нашего главного героя, дает почитать ему детективный роман, автором которого является журналист, который совсем недавно покончил жизнь самоубийством. Далее сюжет набирает очень необычные обороты и переносит нас в современную зимнюю швецию, а также в сказочный мир скрывающий весьма шокирующие тайны.

Very enjoyable, doesnt focus on inventory management, but on "what do i need to do to progress this situation", although getting the notes for that can be a nuisance. The puzzles are mostly self-contained and fun.

This is a bad point and click game with a bland writing.

My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happineass of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

The Samaritan Paradox (SP) was doing just fine until it decided to just ♥♥♥♥ the bed right at the end.
A point and click adventure randomly set in the 80’s in a Swedish town notable for how unnoteworthy it is. I think SP is meant to have a sort of dark and gritty tone, but it never shone through, making some of the story beats feel horribly out of place, especially the ‘twist’ ending, which was utterly unpredictable and came entirely by surprise with no foreshadowing of any kind at all. It feels an awful lot like the devs just ran out of ideas and decided to wrap it up halfway through, and it doesn’t answer any of the main beats laid out in the beginning. I also find it frustrating that there are no Samaritans or paradox’s present throughout the game.
We play Ord, a PhD student in cryptology with writers block, who happens to be given a book by a recently deceased writer and decides to harass the family when he spots a code on the first page. Thus begins our adventure! Rub things on other things, steal random items laying around, ask people the same four things over and over, and remember to water your plant in this mediocre point and click adventure.

[list][*] I enjoyed the retro feel to the game. As it mostly functions when you’re not trying to do anything else besides play it. The music is also quite pleasant though it doesn’t always fit the theme.

[*]The puzzles are quite straight forward with little to no moon logic and I didn’t need a guide for any of the parts.

SP feels like it was intended to be twice as long, and get progressively darker, but in reality it ends worse than an episode of Scooby-doo. Who called the police to that location? Why? Where was the money? Why did the credits have a yacht? What about the row boat? Magnus and lunch? Why didn’t we chose what to give? Why does Sara care? Just… What?
[*] The UI is very old school. It’s extremely unfriendly. This is especially true for the pixel hunts, of which there are many, MANY, examples.
[*] Alt tabbing, crashes the game. Pressing ESC, crashes the game. Holding down too many keys, crashes the game. And getting a message from a friend on steam, that’s right, crashes the game. This makes trying to chat with people a nightmare while playing. Whats worse is there is no auto save. While I wouldn’t mind that normally it drives me mental if I lose progress because someone was like “hi buddy, you wanna play a game?” and then I need to kill the now screaming remains of the game I was playing that won’t close properly.
[*] The voice acting seems to be a friends and family job. I was mostly fine with it as it’s generally passable, but a few of the characters sound just terrible and the delivery is often ham fisted at best.

For a single euro? This game is perfectly priced. If you like point and click adventures for the puzzles, then this is good to go. It’ll keep you busy for about 4 hours with no guides.
For the story? This has plot holes. It ends suddenly. The ending is nonsensical because it hasn’t had any foreshadowing. The game forces you down routes which are annoying when there are other options it won’t let you use, and it doesn’t do well building up its characters. Please note this game is also not for children, and is extremely mature in its content at points.
Overall, for me SP has to be a no. While it starts with real promise, the abrupt, unsolicited, and frankly terrible end was just too poorly done, had no impact, gave us extremely limited choices, and felt too rushed for me to recommend, even at the great price. I’m actually quite sad about it because it was strongly on track to be a heavy recommend, and it feels like the potential was just wasted. Such a shame.
If there was an option for a neutral review I’d go for that, just for the ultra-low price and the more than decent game length you get for such a low price. As it is, I have to downvote this, since the cons outweigh the pros, but there's promise here and I will definitely check out more from this developer (there is an upcoming game for early 2024).

[b]+ Voice acting[/b] is really good for the most part. There is the occasional overacting, but overall they did a good job. And the actress who voices Freja is simply brilliant.
[b]+ Audio is ok.[/b] I actually really like the intro theme and the -few and far between- pieces throughout the game. Also, there are some nice cues in tense situations, and generally the background music/audio is fitting.
[b]+ Achievements.[/b] There are plenty and interesting, and not that hard to get (except one or two). There is also a guide to help you if you need it, and you can even get 100% on a single playthrough.

[b]? No hand-holding[/b]. Very few hints throughout the game, which is something that polarizes players: You either like this style or don’t.
[b]? Graphics.[/b] There are lots of pixel-graphics games out there that look way better than this.

[b]- Super linear.[/b] There are quite a few points throughout the game (especially early in the game) where there is literally one way to progress (a clue that has to be found or a puzzle to solve) and if you can’t find it, you are stuck forever without anything else to do.
[b]- Obscure puzzles.[/b] Nonsensical and/or weird puzzles just isn’t the smart way in puzzle designing. Even after reading about their solutions in online guides, one might still fail to understand the logic behind them. Not to mention the constant pixel-hunting. Not sure I like the quick-time event nature of some of the puzzles also. They seem a bit off for such a game.
[b]- Lack of flow/break of immersion.[/b] More often than not I found myself not really enjoying the game and more like plodding through chore-like sequences. This is directly connected to the puzzle design: In other games, even if you’re stuck on a puzzle, the effort to find clues doesn’t feel like such a chore. Here you are consumed with pixel-hunting and trying to find whacky ways to combine items with literally nothing else to do. As a result frustration and tediousness take over and completely break any sort of immersion.
[b]- Story.[/b] It's mostly indifferent or outright bad/unoriginal. It doesn’t compensate for the bad puzzles and the overall lack of flow of the game. There are plenty of other games with bad/obscure puzzles, but they make up for it with a great story, top notch voice acting and fine visuals. Syberia II is such a game that comes to mind.
[h3]Conclusion[/h3]
You can try this, but you won’t be missing out if you don’t. I willed myself to the end, but rest assured that if I didn’t obsess about achievements, I would have left this game way before the midpoint. That said, the game costs less than a dollar, so you can always give it a try and just leave it if it’s not your cup of tea, without hurting your pocket.

I wanted to like this game as there is clearly a strong story and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into the plot and characters. The puzzles did not seem intuitive at times and I frequently had to watch a walkthrough in YouTube to work out a puzzle that I nearly knew the answer to. I have played a lot of these types of games and I know the pattern for working out most puzzles.
The pixel hunting was very frustrating....for some interactions with an inventory item and a timed puzzle, it was time consuming getting the pointer aligned at the right time. It became annoying rather than a fun challenge. Also, some of the timed puzzles were not designed well. Even when I knew what I had to do, if you were not doing things in an exact order (which there were not indications that you had to do) then a timed puzzle did not work out. I don't want to spoil any game play though 2 of the timed puzzles, I had to watch on YouTube to see exact spots to click on. This was after trying over 10 times to get a puzzle solved.
The pixel hunting and the frustrating timed puzzles detracted from an interesting story.
An intriguing beginning, but a disappointing, contrived ending. The puzzles are clever, but the interaction points are so tiny that pixel hunting becomes unavoidable. The visual style is nice, but the low resolution renders most of the text unreadable. In the end, it’s barely playable—and the finale isn’t worth the struggle.
Not suitable for playing on Windows.
Terrible image quality, and the game is impossible to terminate or switch to another application (not even Ctrl+Alt+Del and then Task Manager helps).
You'll need to wait and hope that the game crashes soon as there's no other way out.
Thankfully, in my case the game crashed right after the first unskippable phone conversation.

the samaritan paradox is a 2014 point & click adventure game published by screen 7. i do consider this a solid entry in the p&c adventure genre. it has flaws but i enjoyed the game despite them. the game does have some unique features that gave the game a nice changer of pace in setting, characters, etc.
getting some of the flaws out of the way, the voice acting and dialogue can be a little underwhelming. VA is monotone and everything feels more "cheesy detective movie" rather than a actually enthralling/clever noir story. however, i did just play another p&c adventure game right before this and this game blows that game away in the VA/story department (and in every aspect to be fair) so i guess there is definitely a level of quality to this game compared to other games in the genre.
there's also an annoying feature where the item bar pops up when you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen, and you'll accidentally pop it up when you don't mean to probably well over a hundred times if you play the game all the way through. it really should've had a fixed bar with the interactive setting just also fixed to end right above it, but ultimately you can deal with it while completing this game.
the puzzles and gameplay aspects other than stuff i mentioned above are actually pretty good. the puzzles can be pretty hard and have a nice variety, i saw someone compare those aspects of this game to classic p&c adventures like syberia 1+2 and i like that comparison a lot.
overall, the samaritan paradox is a pretty solid point-&-click adventure from 2014 that you can get for extremely cheap, and for that alone i find this worth it based on price and quality. you can easily wish-list this and eventually grab it for well under a dollar. i see that the developer has a newer game released in 2019 so i'm curious if they expanded upon/improved upon aspects found in this game. i'm also excited to play the rest of screen 7's published games as i've now played their first three games and while they're okay (with this easily being the best of the three over the cat lady and the apotheosis project so far), im curious to see how they evolve regarding games in the p&c genre, but also excited to see how they adapted to the other genres they've tackled.
The Samaritan Paradox is a construction kit game made by filling out the templates in the Adventure Game Studio point and click game maker. Unsurprisingly, using a construction kit instead of a serious game engine has resulted in a garbage game. This is a basic Scumm engine-like point and click adventure game with a paint-dryingly boring, badly written mystery/intrigue storyline and some incredibly mediocre pixel "art" used instead of proper graphics. It's like the developer had a look at every element of what makes a fantastic, brilliant game and deliberately decided to use a cheap knockoff substitute instead. Oh, the voice acting is pretty bad, too. I wasn't sure if it was a text to speech, it's that bad. So in terms of overall design and concept, there's nothing here for gamers.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game construction kit/toolset, Adventure Game Studio, designed for making Monkey Island ripoffs without needing to know how to make video games. Has anyone considered that it's a good thing to have a high talent bar for video game production? I guess not. Adventure Game Studio is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur/unskilled developers as it doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible construction kit.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The Samaritan Paradox didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for solving the first puzzle in the game, but only around 19 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show only 19 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who weren't even playing the game? Trading cards. Players will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
The Samaritan Paradox is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

Cuenta con historia envolvente, giros argumentales y un montón de escenarios muy bien logrados. si bien tiene problemas de interfaz en algunos momentos, por el precio es un regalazo.
while the story is well developed and intriguing with some twists and turns, but there are two very serious problems with this game. as a first problem, the gameplay features obtuse puzzles, pixel hunting, and frequent quick-timed actions, all of which are extremely frustrating. second problem with the game is that it is so indie and was designed and programmed so primitively. In the middle of the story, the game froze and gave an error, so I had to restart my laptop. the main characters and general atmosphere are also so bleak and depressing that it's kind of made me depressed as well. I recommend watching a walkthrough of the game's story instead of playing it yourself.

I have played the Linux version of the game which is officially not supported anymore even tho the game doesn't really get updated so it makes no sense but oh well. It is playable just fine but it has some serious flaws (some also on Windows from what I have read):
- there is no proper setting in-game to fullscreen it and the game runs in a tiny window
- pressing escape freezes the game up completely, the developers have been aware since 2014 and they never bothered to actually fix it from the looks of it
- the "Book Collector, Level III" achievement didn't unlock for me the first time around, reloading an older save and trying again unlocked it however
- the UI of the game is incredibly bad

Technical issues aside, I found the game to be a boring point and click with really annoying timed actions at a few points during the game.
Enjoyable point and click that went in unexpected direction. Have a couple of minor complaints, but these are certainly not unique to this game. Weird timing puzzles, which were sometimes fiddly and the other issue being the low res nature made some objects hard to find and/or identify them

A neat old-school point&click adventure game with good puzzles and engaging story. I can't understand people complaining about the puzzles in some of the other reviews. While not straightforward (I would have given the game a negative review in that case) I also didn't find them illogical and, as an experienced adventure game player, I finished the game without getting stuck once. There also wasn't any pixel hunting as claimed in some reviews. In fact, I found that, whenever there was a smaller object in the scene that the character needed, a description of a nearby larger object helpfully hints the player to the smaller one.
Pues al precio al que está (y más en ofertas, que puede estar a menos de 1 euro), me ha resultado muy entretenido. No está exento de críticas, como alguna cosa rara en la trama y varios bugs, pero el pixel art es agradable, tiene puzzles inteligentes y una historia en general envolvente que gana mucho con la historia del libro. Recomendado a fans del género.

Must say, among all the pixel art adventures out there this may be not the most polished, but it is the one I think about more often. Because of that story. It works.
The Samaritan Paradox ist eins dieser Spiele mit gemischter Empfehlung, bei dem leider technische Probleme zu einem Daumen abwärts führen.
Es ist ein klassisches Adventure auf Basis der uralten AGS-Engine, dessen Story leider ihr Potential nicht erreicht und dessen Ende etwas fragwürdig ist. Es ist nicht grundsätzlich schlecht und es sind hier durchaus einige interessante Aspekte vorhanden (etwa die Story in der Story), die kombiniert mit einigen überdurchschnittlich schwierigen Puzzles Fans des Genres interessieren können, aber die technischen Schwierigkeiten, die hauptsächlich durch das Alter der AGS-Engine-Version verursacht werden, sind dann eben mehr Aufwand als es ein mittelmäßiges Adventure wert ist.
Tip für Leute, die's trotzdem spielen wollen: Das Spiel ist kompatibel mit aktuellen Versionen von ScummVM. Wem Achievements egal sind, kann das Spiel daher mit besseren Grafikfiltern für moderne Auflösungen und mit weniger technischen Problemen spielen...aber das ist halt leider nicht die Version, die hier verkauft wird. Daher "Daumen runter" mit etwas schlechtem Gewissen.

worst adventure game I've played in a long time, really bad, technically the worst one I've ever played (music stops as soon as voice acting starts, controls suck, horrible scrolling, washed out graphics, horrible font, locks up when you alt tab out of the game to read a walkthrough, almost no sound effects), puzzles are just weird, not smart, not crazy, just weird, I dont understand what I'm doing most of the time.
The mood of the game is a mix of boredom and depression, I hate it with all my guts.
The structure sucks too, for instance you get a new location on your map, want to go there and the game wont allow it because you can still do something in your current location, I could go on and on, I really dislike this game and stopped playing it and I never do this when I've started an adventure game. I really love pnc adventures, but this one I simply cant play and I enjoy the worst ones just because I love the genre.
Pretty standard point & click adventure.. the ending kind of threw me for a loop, but the story along the way was good. I enjoyed the way it was portrayed in that when you read the books you play as that character. I came across a few bugs, but nothing that ruined the experience.
Decent for the price, and a worthy option for any point & click enthusiast!

Los personajes son poco interesantes y las actuaciones de voz, exceptuando al protagonista, son horrendas.
La trama intenta sorprender con giros que carecen de mucho sentido y se sienten forzados. Pero lo peor llega al final, cuando el protagonista toma una decisión importante sin que el jugador pueda hacer nada al respecto.
Honestamente, es el peor juego que he comprado y recomiendo que no cometan el mismo error que yo.

Unless you're a die hard P'n'C fan, don't do it. The story is thin, but ok. The game is a real pain, though. The whole design is like back in the 80s, which is not a good thing. The game left me completely lost most of the time with no hints on where to continue. Would've searched for ages had I not looked it up in a walkthrough. Even with the walkthrough, there were situations where I was about to give up, as the game expected the precise pixel to be clicked to continue.
No, this is not the type of P'n'C game I want to play, running through with a walkthrough and with no modern interface (e.g. not being able to speed up animations with a double click, menus that are intuitive).
Some puzzles seemed glitchy or not right. I really liked the story but then the ending was strange.

Nice one! It has timed event where you need to act fast during couple of seconds but if failed it is not punishing, you just restart at the same place.
I missed the third achievement about watering the plant and I couldn't fix it at all at the end unfortunately.
Cooles Spiel aber die Rätsel sind teilweise weit hergeholt und schwer, sonst ist die story ganz okay, nichts atemberaubendes. Kann man machen.

[h2]Story and foundation [/h2]
We play as Ord, a cryptology student (puzzles, not crypto currency). When he discovers a code in the final book of the recently deceased journalist Jonatan Bergwall, his daughter who doesn't want to pursue herself asks him to investigate this in return for half of the possible spoils.
The story can be interchanged with a story that Ord reads. The main story takes place in Göteborg, Sweden. The characters are all interesting and have been worked out in detail.
[h2]Visuals [/h2]
The game is made in 320x240 resolution, which can be scaled up. Most hitboxes are too tiny, and I don't see a clear reason for that. For instance the plant in the first room can be targeted only when you target the plant exactly. Someone took the time to make a hitbox for all the branches, while a rough area would be easier and more player friendly.
It can be a real pixelhunt, sometimes you can't see what objects supposed to be, although the latter I don't have a problem with, as long as everything around it is well in order. Knowing that the hitboxes are bad, it's just a bad combination.
The moving animations are very poor. The walking animation is very choppy. The still animations differ from frame to frame. Some are good, some are bad. But: the game has many frames, and I don't mind a frame to be of lower quality when you don't spend a lot of time there.
[h2]Audio[/h2]
All conversations are voiced, with good quality for the main characters.
I am really impressed with the music! It's all keyboard music, but for me of an exceptional quality! There are different tunes for different scenes, and they compliment each other well. It adds greatly to the atmosphere! The album can be found on all music sites.
In the game you encounter a jukebox at some point, which contains a number of songs. These aren't part of the soundtrack, and are not available widely. But the song that I picked, it struck a nerve with me. It's the song [url=https://youtu.be/j43zKLW5LYY]'Feeding on your love'[/url]. Not every note is sung pure, but it's still a gem of a song!
[h2]The gameplay, oh boy... [/h2]
Ord does investigative work, so difficult puzzles are to be expected. The visuals already work against the gameplay, but this doesn't have to be a problem per se. However... On top of that the game has multiple sequences where you have to click so quickly on the targets, that the game alienates everyone who isn't able to do so. Now I'm handicapped myself, and I try to never ask for special treatment, but this game demands such dexterity, many 'normal people' will have difficulty. Totally out of place for a point and click!
[h2]Afterthoughts [/h2]
I was really delighted by the story! And everything around the story, like the beginning, development, ending, alternating with the second story... Really really good!
About the gameplay, I would straightout recommend a guide, which I also used. There are fulfilling puzzles present, some are clearly separated from the story, and are /spoilered in the guide, so those can itch a puzzle crave.
What I also liked were the characters. They felt real, interesting and relatable. Also the location of Gothenburg has a personal touch with me, I like that city.
The music strikes a personal liking with me as well. So the game hits some personal notes with me, that might not be the case with you. Your experience might differ greatly for that reason.

Un jeu à petit budget pauvre en graphismes devrait compenser ce manque par une belle réalisation. Ca n'est pas le cas ici car on s'ennuie ferme, remarquez c'est bien d'y jouer le soir avant d'aller se coucher: on s'endort dans la demi-heure. Des énigmes plutôt logiques mais des passages trop mal réalisés comme lorsqu'on doit se cacher derrière une porte: si on n'est pas placé au pixel près ca ne fonctionne pas (soluce video obligatoire dans la prison), bref le genre de jeu où on est content quand ca se termine mais si vous n'êtes pas fan des point & click vous ne tiendrez pas longtemps. 8/20

Really cool story, but some slow animations in this pixelated world is biggest advantage, along with some hotspots being hard to track.
Unfortunately game crashes often when minimized. Does not have keyboard support where it should e.g. choosing dialogue options.
Might be a bit hard without guide, but definitely not impossible - would just take time to crack some stuff.
Quite detailed and dialogues are voices, but protagonists' though are not.
The story is amazing. I really felt main character being likeable.
If you're not scared by pixelated art, well, you should try this one.
A little game with nice music and nice pixel artworks.
The rest is an extremly thin story and unbearable puzzles which are almost without any hints what or how or when you have to do anything in them.
Some are even that ridicously hard that using walkthroughs don't make you get the thoughts behind those puzzles but who cares, just continue.
But in the end I didnt make it through the game, it was just too less story, too less satisfying moments, everytime when there were another puzzle it felt like getting some work done and it was just great that i just paid 2 € for it.
I really wanted to finish it but the motivation gauge reached zero.
The successor of this game, "Whispers of A Machine", is many times better and i recommand any adventure games fan playing Whispers of a Machine!
How have \i not heard of this game before. It is everything that i was looking for. Hard puzzles, Pixel art. This game is the works. 10/10
