The Quiet Man, developed by Human Head Studios in collaboration with Square Enix and published by Square Enix, is an experimental action-adventure title that set out to blur the line between film and video games, but ultimately became better known for its missteps than its ambition. The game centers on Dane, a deaf vigilante navigating a single night in a grimy urban underworld, searching for answers surrounding a violent incident and a mysterious masked antagonist. From the very beginning, The Quiet Man makes it clear that it wants to be experienced as something unconventional, prioritizing cinematic presentation and atmosphere over traditional gameplay flow.

One of the game’s defining features is its decision to largely remove audible dialogue and subtitles during the initial playthrough. This design choice was intended to place players directly into Dane’s perspective, forcing them to interpret the story through body language, facial expressions, and environmental context rather than spoken words. While this idea is conceptually interesting, in practice it severely undermines the narrative. Key plot points, character motivations, and emotional beats are obscured to the point of confusion, leaving many players unsure of what is happening or why it matters. Instead of fostering immersion, the silence often creates detachment, as scenes unfold without enough visual clarity to compensate for the lack of dialogue.

The narrative itself aims for a gritty, neo-noir tone, filled with crime, revenge, and moral ambiguity. The story unfolds through a mixture of live-action full-motion video and in-engine cutscenes, with real actors portraying many of the characters. While this hybrid presentation is visually distinctive, it contributes to an uneven pacing that frequently pulls players out of the experience. Long stretches of passive viewing are punctuated by brief combat encounters, making the game feel more like an interrupted movie than a cohesive interactive work. Even once Square Enix later added an optional update that restored full audio and subtitles for a second playthrough, the story’s structural weaknesses remained evident.

Combat is presented in a straightforward beat ’em up style, featuring basic punches, kicks, dodges, and a focus mechanic meant to slow time and highlight incoming attacks. Unfortunately, these systems lack depth and refinement. Encounters are repetitive, enemy variety is limited, and the feedback from hits feels muted and imprecise. Rather than escalating in complexity or challenge, fights tend to blur together, offering little incentive to master the mechanics beyond simple trial and error. As a result, the interactive portions of the game often feel like obstacles between cinematic sequences rather than meaningful gameplay in their own right.

Visually, The Quiet Man has moments of competence but rarely achieves the impact it seems to be aiming for. The urban environments are drab and loosely detailed, matching the game’s somber tone but lacking memorable identity. Character animations during combat can appear stiff, and transitions between live-action footage and in-game scenes are often jarring rather than seamless. The overall presentation feels like an idea that never fully came together, with technical execution falling short of the cinematic aspirations driving the project.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of The Quiet Man is the sense that its core concept had potential. Exploring a story through the lens of a deaf protagonist could have offered meaningful insight or innovative storytelling mechanics, but the game rarely engages with the realities or nuances of that perspective in a thoughtful way. Characters appear to communicate freely with Dane despite his condition, and the lack of subtitles affects the player far more than it meaningfully reflects the character’s lived experience. This disconnect makes the silence feel more like a gimmick than an authentic narrative device.

Overall, The Quiet Man stands as a cautionary example of how ambition alone is not enough to carry a game. Its attempt to merge cinematic storytelling with interactive action results in an experience that feels disjointed, confusing, and mechanically underdeveloped. While a small subset of players may find value in it as a curiosity or a bold experiment gone wrong, most will likely come away frustrated by its shallow combat, incoherent storytelling, and uneven pacing. Rather than being remembered for innovation, The Quiet Man has earned its reputation as a lesson in the importance of execution, clarity, and respect for the medium’s interactive strengths.

[h1]Un jeu à qui l'on a fait la sourde oreille[/h1]

Avec moins de 40% d'évaluations positives je lançais The Quiet man avec une très, très grosse appréhension, parmi les commentaires on peux voir des personnes qui trouvent le jeu moche, daté techniquement, gameplay raté, histoire nulle et j'en passe...

L'histoire nous place dans la peau de Dane, il doit sauver la chanteuse de son club qui lui rappelle sa mère décédée quelques années auparavant, Dane étant sourd, les dialogues, bruitages et musiques du jeu ne seront accessibles que lors de la 2ème run, il faut savoir que The Quiet man est un jeu à faire deux fois, oui deux fois, pour enfin saisir l'histoire dans son intégralité et voir la vraie fin du titre ! Le jeu n'est d'ailleurs pas très long et l'on en viendra rapidement à bout, d'autant que la 1ère run permettra de saisir toutes les techniques de gameplay qui permettront de finir la 2ème run sans trop de mal et assez rapidement. Ce qui pour moi constitue un vrai défaut, le jeu est très court et très facile.

Pour ce qui est de la technique j'ai trouvé que le jeu graphiquement n'avais rien à envier à d'autres (surtout pour un jeu de 2018 !), je l'ai trouvé même plutôt beau (pour les phases de jeu j'entends, pas les FMV) et je n'ai relevé aucun bug gênant. Les FMV sont très bien réalisées et j'ai trouvé le jeu d'acteurs des comédiens super réussi. J'ai juste trouvé dommage que les devs n'aient pas rajouté de QTE, soit dans les cinématiques ou in-game car je dois l'avouer, on passe presque + de temps à regarder qu'à jouer vraiment.

Pour ce qui est du gameplay, vous aurez des attaques au poings, au pieds, avec possibilité de combinaisons, ainsi que la possibilité d'attraper vos ennemis, d'esquiver et de courir, le B.A.BA pour un beat'em all.
La subtilité de The Quiet est également la présence d'une touche activant la "concentration" de Dane qui ralentira le temps et permettra de se sortir de situations parfois périlleuses.
Les reproches que je pourrais formuler à ce niveau sont que la variété des ennemis est hyper limitée et que la palette de coups dont on dispose manque elle aussi de variété.
On notera également l'impossibilité de "locker" nos adversaires ainsi que des caméras qui ne seront pas toujours sous le meilleur angle.

Après, malgré ses quelques défauts, j'ai trouvé les combats quand même très plaisants ainsi que le jeu dans sa généralité, je ne comprend pas pourquoi il a eu tellement d'évaluations négatives...
Sûrement dû au fait de devoir le finir deux fois... après j'avoue que la 1ère run est assez bizarre parce qu'on essaie de comprendre l'histoire (même si on la comprend très vite sans sons déjà) et pourquoi certaines choses se produisent. On réussira quand même à être surpris dans la run avec le son mais je n'en dirais pas +.

Les + :
+ Très joli graphiquement et pas de bug.
+ Pas cher (14€99)
+ Succès faciles à avoir.
+ Combats plaisants.
+ Le thème de la surdité, pas souvent abordé.
+ Excellent jeu d'acteur dans les FMV.
+ J'ai trouvé l'histoire Dane touchante.

Les - :
- Jeu très court (3-4h pour une run)
- Obligation de finir le jeu deux fois pour saisir toute l'histoire correctement.
- Toujours les mêmes ennemis et palette de coups pas très diversifiée.
- Les devs auraient pu rajouté des QTE par-ci, par-là pour varié le gameplay un peu.
- On passe presque + de temps à regarder qu'à jouer.

Voilà, The Quiet man est un peu un jeu à part, une expérience même je dirais qui visiblement n'auras pas plu à tout le monde, pour ma part j'ai apprécié le titre et je le recommande à ceux qui sauront faire fi de la pléthore d'évaluations négatives dont il aura été victime, il est sûr que ce n'est pas le jeu du siècle mais il m'a quand même fait passer un bon moment d'autant qu'il n'est pas cher du tout.

Je lui attibuerai un bon petit 13/20 et ce sera tout pour moi.
