Great story, unique progression mechanics. Haven't seen the team system, or morale system used quite like how this game has used it. Despite how old it is would recommend to anyone that hasn't had the chance to play. Loveable characters, amazing map designs. To this day haven't played a game that does what this did.

Histoire :

Dans The Last Remnant, tu incarnes Rush, un jeune héros parti sauver sa sœur dans un monde dominé par des artefacts mystérieux appelés Rémanences.
L’univers est riche et intéressant, mais le scénario reste assez classique et parfois mal rythmé. Les personnages sont nombreux, mais tous ne marquent pas forcément. L’histoire fait le job… sans forcément te coller une claque.

Gameplay :

Le système de combat est très particulier :
Gestion d’unités (plutôt que de personnages individuels)
Commandes globales (tu donnes des ordres, pas des actions précises)
Combats massifs et parfois chaotiques
👉 Au début, tu ne comprends rien.
👉 Après 20 heures, tu commences à comprendre.
👉 Après 50 heures, tu fais semblant de maîtriser 😄
Le jeu propose une vraie profondeur, mais aussi beaucoup de frustration, notamment à cause du manque de contrôle direct.

Graphismes & ambiance :

Correct pour son époque, avec une bonne direction artistique.
Les environnements sont variés et les musiques sont clairement un point fort.
En revanche, le jeu accuse son âge aujourd’hui, avec quelques soucis techniques et animations rigides.

Difficulté :

Assez particulière.
Le jeu peut être très punitif si tu progresses mal, notamment à cause du système de progression caché (Battle Rank).
👉 Tu peux te rendre la vie très difficile sans t’en rendre compte.
👉 Oui, le jeu peut te punir… pour avoir trop combattu 😄

wildly underrated game. this suffered from being subject to the review of the final fantasy crowd. there is a lot to like here. i have probably close to 200 hours in it, i played it offline back in the day, and time logging was kind of buggy back then. i want to say i would love to see a proper remaster, but not by the people currently running and working at Square Enix. If you can find a key, and like things that color outside the lines and do not mind alittle jank, i highly recommend.

I wanted to try this game for a long time because I really like the character designs, however, I have huge issue with the battle system and the overworld. I've only just gone through the first 2 dungeons, and while I will keep playing to see more about the story I'm high key turned off by those 2 things.

Pointless review since the game can't be purchased anymore, but I have a very hard time recommending it to anybody that might want to purchase it on platforms where it's still available. The game is incredibly obtuse and explains almost none of its mechanics. This leads to a frustrating and irritating experience where you spend more time fighting with the game's bizarre design choices and trying to divine how the game is supposed to work rather than actually playing it. The main character also sucks pretty hard, but he's definitely not the worst protagonist I've seen in a Square Enix game.

The Last Remnant is a JRPG that clearly takes inspiration from Final Fantasy XII, with a focus on large-scale battles, factions, and a more hands-off combat system.

For me, it really felt like it wanted to be FFXII — which already wasn’t a Final Fantasy I enjoyed much. I stopped after about four hours because not much was happening, and the systems never really pulled me in. That said, I do understand why some people like it: the world is interesting, the ambition is there, and the combat ideas are unusual. It just didn’t click with me personally.

The Last Remnant is an absolute diamond a true masterpiece and one of the best games I have ever played. Its unique battle system, deep strategic mechanics, and unforgettable characters make every moment engaging and memorable. The world is rich with lore, and the story constantly drives you forward with excitement and curiosity. Even today, the game feels special and stands out among other JRPGs for its creativity and ambition. I genuinely hope it receives a full remaster someday, because it truly deserves a modern revival. I totally recommend The Last Remnant to anyone who loves great RPG experiences.

this review is mostly pointless because the game was delisted but i like to get my thoughts out so i'm going to post one anyway

do not be fooled by the comparisons to final fantasy : this is a SaGa game in disguise. just weird layers of mechanics that are absolutely not explained to the player, like each character having a completely unique and unexplained stat, battle commands being somewhat random, no straight-forward leveling but instead having a weird "world level" and stats that eventually level. exp is, apparently, proportional to battle difficulty, which is measured in turns taken. mid combat qtes. party management that seems to be encouraged but also does not seem to matter. layer upon layer of weird ideas. also other weird knick knack like the area intro playing every time you re-enter an area.

this is a mostly fixed version of the seemingly very broken xbox version (with bugs and insanely easy way to brick a run) and certain features like quick battles are welcome with how many units can end up on the battlefield.

gameplay aside, the main character is not super likeable and the story is a bit whatever. still not a terrible time, but absolutely not the first rpg i would recommend to someone for sure.

The last time I've played it was over 10 years ago, maybe 15. My memory is fuzzy about dates.
Before purchasing it on Steam I've pirated the game and played about 100 hours of it, completing it was not an easy task.

I don't want to dive in deep analysis. However, the game is full of secret mechanics that the game never tells you about but you learn through guides. Enemies also scale with you and if you grind too much, your enemies will start using new skills as well. Big oof there.

If you are into Final Fantasy 12-like design, Godlike OST, BIG BRAIN strategic battles, UNFAIR combat and grind like no tomorrow... highly recommended.

BTW, YOU CAN'T PURCHASE THE GAME ON STEAM. THANKS SQUARE.

This game is old so you can prob get this pretty cheap, Game is a 7/10- if on sale for less than 10 USD, I would say grab it.

Cons
BR level scaling system - if you try to grind like other FF style games you will just be making it harder when you face bosses down the road each battle gives you permanant BR rating doesnt matter if its a FLY or a Boss, this game actively states in every guide to almost avoid fights to NOT gain BR = DONT DO content if you want the game to played correctly.

This is so bad im not sure i will be able/ want to finish this game due to this BR level scaling

Pros Good story so far im prob not gonna be able to finish it because i been grinding like crazy because i dont care how hard it is ill just cap it out and roll over it i guess and make this take 500 hours, or i could just quit and go play something else I dont know yet im weighing my options, because this game does not provide anything truly unique in the turn-based RPG world besides mixed grouping like OGRE Battle 64.

A game with so much potential, sadly, it's half baked. A lot of cool features that lack any type of depth.

You can have weapons, and accesories but no armour. You can recruit people, but not see who you recruited in the party menu. In combat you are limited to attack, attack stronger, attack with magic. However, you will have 1 melee special attack and 1 magic attack and thats it. You can not change special or magick attacks.

The story is forggetable, the main character is a nuisance. All characters act like one expects.

The combat is the best part of the game, but overall the game feels like a prototype or a demo. Great unrealased potential.

Ok, so this is a game that i think would be loved if more people tried. Most people are hesitant i think because of the xbox shortcomings. I had the xbox version years ago and loved it but never could finish it because it always got too hard. They addressed a lot of that in this version. The graphics are honestly extremely impressive, especially the cities. Every city/landscape looks unique and even the backgrounds are detailed. No random encounters is awesome too, every enemy is visible so you can run through or pick the fights you want. The enemies are varied and well detailed. The battles are amazing and might be the most fun of any game ive played. Just smooth and with tons of differnt weapons, skills, animations ect. Plus the soundtrack actually reacts depending on how the battle is going(it doesnt always get it right but its still cool). On my pc there were never any loading screens which was awesome. Tons of unique npcs to recruit but most require a side quest.

Now the bad, or at least what most people think of. The Battle Rank system lol. This is far more balanced in this version. There are plenty of guides now too that didnt exist when i played xbox version. Basically each soldier improves individually depending on what you do. Sounds cool but if your mc does everything than they never get good at anything. This version lets you turn skills you dont want off so that if say you want your mc to get stronger at magic than he will focus on that and improve/ learn better skills by turning off the others(physical,remedies ect) so he doesnt do them and waste exp. This all works well but in the background the BR system still increases as you fight as well and the higher it is, the harder the game/enemies get. So basically if your not fighting hard enough monsters or whatever the BR can outpace your charecters(and new hires that you havent trained) and the game eventually hardlocks you when you hit a boss you can not beat even with luck. So basically no grinding or enjoying battles which are the best part of the game. The battles are the best part but if your worried about BR you cant enjoy as many. For me i dl'd a Trainer i found on reddit that fixed everything and made this game truly amazing. I was able to decrease/increase the BR as needed(for me the first 1/3 of the game, after i was good). Now you can do what you want without being punished later. Also it allows you to change skilll points for every charecter if you mess up (for me jorgan(?) the unique leader, you work to get him and no matter what job you give him he is always badly skilled so as an adventurer i gave him like 6 pts strength and 8 intel and he wasnt useless lol). I also gave mr diggs 20 digs at the start which felt way more balanced. You can add more soldiers up to like 35 i think(which would be insanely op but still) and all kinds of stuff. Easy to install and use even for me(not a big cpu guy). I got mine from a reddit post i found with a link, easy to find, dl and use.

The only downside left was the rng on orders. This is fine 90 percent of the time but early on when i really needed to heal there were times when the order to 'keep hp up' just wouldnt show up and ruin the battle. Making sure i had the right herbs for healing helped a lot once i figured that out but still it would happen on occasion. Later when you have more units you can send to heal others this is less of an issue but it can suck when no skills pop up or just bad orders that make no sense. In my head i thought (as an ex-soldier) i had lots of skills i trained for but naturally in combat you cant always use them so maybe thats what they were going for...idk, but thats my head canon/excuse

If your on the fence, try it. Its worth it i think. The universe is amazing. Graphics/soundtrack are great. The writing/story is ok/good. Think like ff11, its enough to keep moving foward. Lots of content/optional bosses/side missions ect. Get a trainer. And without spoilers look up what side missions disappear before gong into the aquaducts. Not a huge deal but thats the point of the game that changes the world(i think it was a disk change on xbox) so like a dozen side quests vanish. I have fomo so had to do them all. No idea if this ever goes on sale but might be worth looking into,.....enjoy

I really hope they repost this one eventually for people. This game had a very unique battle system that took time to master and build a fully cohesive army. But that was a huge part of the fun, especially if you didn’t plan everything out beforehand by using a guide and looked everything up.

I only have 41 hours on steam but a lot more on the original release. To this day one of my favorite RPG’s. The story was excellent as well and I enjoyed some of the voice acting.

The new function they added for speed battles can help cut a lot of the monotony, but personally I didn’t find myself using it much.

If this ever gets relisted on steam (and it should), I would definitely recommend fans of the genre pick it up.

The Last Remnant malgré son coté novateur, surtout au niveau mécanique de combat, pour l'époque reste un jeu qui n'est quasiment pas abordable ,voir finissable si vous n'utilisez pas une solution (wiki et soluce last Remnant, pour ma part) faite pour vous aidez a comprendre les mécaniques ( rang de bataille alias BR , spécialisation des classes via orientation , ... ) cachez derrière le jeu et avoir la liste de tous les objets donné par les monstres (Collection de monstres assez faible au passage , on recycle pas mal) ainsi que plein d'autres choses.

C'est pour cela que je recommande pas ce dernier malgré des graphismes très acceptable aujourd'hui , de bonne musique ,une histoire et des personnages/Boss correct .

Si malgré tout vous vous lancez dans ce jeu ayez bien de la patience il vous faudra du temps et aimer le ponçage pour bien le finir de bout en bout . (+ de 200h pour ma part et encore j'ai pas tout fait )

Bref merci d'avoir cette critique et si bon jeu a vous.

This is one of my favorites: an amazing storyline, a huge cast of characters, and a unique style of strategic gameplay—somewhat reminiscent of Final Fantasy, yet still very distinct. The graphics definitely show their age, but the PC version holds up well, much like the console remaster. 8.5/10.

a completely different experience to Final Fantasy. but it will take sometime to get familiar with. other than that the runs fine. graphics quite nice. the game feels like a spinoff from final fantasy 12 but in its own way. the battle system is weird as hell. grinding is a chore at the beginning of the game until it opens up. i really got this game late. i had to find a redemption key on sale somewhere. but i feel this is better than what i don't like about ff16. i don't get why they done that hiring crew members to join you on your journey system. again this game is weird in a good way. but im only at the beginning of the game... this review may change in the future.

from the wiki. pretty clear cut example unreal is a lazy engine for bad developers necessitated by budget cuts. it's an enjoyable if not incredibly streamlined experience. the pc port is quite good for what it is given the date of its release, many more options than even modern unreal engine games offer. definitely makes you miss this era of unreal engine when they weren't trying to be some cinema industry blender replacement and still cared both about their legacy and its future and about being a competent, peformant(console and mobile) game engine. there is no cloud support or achievements and the nature of its development throughout its entire lifetime spanning until this very day does not inspire any sort of confidence but if you can experience it and enjoy JRPG games its probably still worthwhile. still pretty early into the game but I find it to be pretty unremarkable but quite polished and functional.

"The decision to use a licensed engine, rather than develop their own as was traditional at Square Enix at the time, was made due to concerns in the company of the rising production costs of making a game, and the direct development time savings possible from using an existing engine. Square-Enix's chief technology officer, Julien Merceron, claimed in an interview from February 2010 that most of the completed game's perceived technical shortcomings were caused by a decision to use the Unreal Engine to not only cut development time but also to reduce the number of skilled programmers that would otherwise be on the project."

MC has significant cognitive disabilities and social issues (i.e. terrible writing).
Combat is a nifty experiment but gets dull super fast.

Objectively, I would say The Last Remnant is a 4/10 game. It has an abysmal story, a convoluted crafting system, and a severe lack of in-game information that forces you to consult outside resources to better understand the game's mechanics. Despite my score, I still recommend folks at least try the game because it has one of the most unique combat systems I've seen in a JRPG in quite a while.

Given that The Last Remnant can no longer be purchased on Steam, it's hard to compare what I feel the price should be versus the actual price. If it were ever to return though, I would say wait until it's about $10.

The Last Remnant is an interesting game. It has one of the most subpar stories I've ever seen: characters conveniently awaken their powers as the plot demands, other characters are conveniently introduced when answers are needed, and worst of all, a character that is almost identical to another is conveniently thrown into your party as a replacement when the latter dies. The entire story is one of convenience with major events barely have any connecting threads as you progress from one set piece to the next. In fact, we don't even learn of the major villian's motivations until right before the final fight of the game!

Despite all this, I found myself engrossed by the gameplay. Using up to 18 characters, you are able to build a maximum of 5 squads. Whereas traditional JRPGs have you controlling a set number of party members, each with their own abilities, in The Last Remnant, you can think of each squad as a "party member" with their abilities determined by the squad composition. For example, have enough tanks in a squad? You can use the Defend command to take less damage. Enough medics? You can have the squad use a dedicated healing command. And if you want maximum damage? Toss in as many warrior-types as you can.

Battles occur on a 2D map where your squads can target enemy squads. You gain advantages for intercepting enemy squads or ganging up on them with multiple squads, however you'll have to be careful with your positioning because enemy squads can do the same to you.

Messing around with the characters and squads was where I had the most fun in the game. Should you have less squads with more units to make them more durable? Or more squads with less units so you can intercept the maximum number of enemy squads possible? Should each squad be balanced? Hyper-focused? How many melee squads should I have? How many magic? How many healers? As you recruit more characters, you'll constantly be messing with your team composition, swapping characters in and out as you see fit.

There is a surprising amount of depth to the gameplay. Unfortunately, most of this is never properly explained to you in-game and you'll have to consult external resources to make heads or tails of the game's many mechanics. Things like how to make characters certain classes, what each classes' bonuses are, what abilities each character will learn, thus determining if they're worthwhile to invest in, how to gain stats, and how the battle rank system works are just some of the things that should have been better explained.

Sadly, while the gameplay is interesting, that alone couldn't sustain the 50+ hour game. Up until near the end of the game, I was doing every side quest, only missing out on a few missions due to not realizing they were story-gated. But by the end, I was sprinting through every dungeon and ignoring all monsters to simply reach the final boss. And honestly, the ending was pretty anti-climatic.

Overall, while I didn't rate The Last Remnant that highly, I do think it's worthwhile for people to at least try the game for its combat system. It does give you a greater scale of battle and makes you feel like a commander rather than two parties standing on the sidelines, taking turns smacking each other. Whether it's worthwhile to finish the game after that is up to you.

The game is pretty unique and has its own niche within the JRPG genre. It has a great voice cast and fun theme. Some of the the in-game quests can set you into areas you don't quite expect with some less then stellar consequences but that seems true of most JRPG's in a sense.

I first played this on Xbox years ago and then replayed it again on PC. Im glad it was made available here as it struggled to run on console due to some of the intense objects it needed to load during large combat sequences.

If you liked Final Fantasy 7-10, this might be worth a shot.

For everyone else, this is an incomprehensible mess of a game on almost all fronts.
I think Square Enix made the right choice requesting this to be de-listed from Steam, so it can't hurt anyone else and can be buried out in the desert alongside ET.

1. Outside of combat, where overlays and menus ruin it: Visual style/direction, animations, and characters/creatures all look pretty good, other than the species with 4 arms.

[b]The Bad[/b]
1. The writing, dialogue, characters. Awful, just awful
2. English voice acting/directing isn't great. Anime gasps + grunts + audible goofy noises.
3. The setting.
Final Fantasy-like magitech BS. Big old ancient mecha-sized magic gatling cannon vs humans with swords and sorcery in the first 10 minutes.
Dumb sentient humanoid species design.
4. Pacing. Intro is very slow and calm, then straight into high octane anime action hero with plot armor crap with way too much going on at once, then back to very slow but tense.
5. Combat system. I have no idea what's going on for a multi-minute fight where I only get to make simple choices at the beginning and then have to watch the cutscene/combat simulation. There's no tutorial.
There's way too much happening on screen, and nothing makes sense in bold flashy text: UNEXPLAINED MECHANICS ARE OCCURING! ACTION WORDS THAT SOUND COOL! OH CRAP, MORE UNEXPLAINED KEYWORDS OCCURING! DID YOU SEE THAT?! HOLY CRAP!
Visually, people/creatures are fighting and maybe doing special moves, and bars are going down and... and I don't care to find out. I'm uninstalling and never touching this again.

TL;DR: A fun JRPG with a unique and random, QTE heavy battle system that is a bit too long.

The Last Remnant is a solid game that seems a bit rushed at times and has some really strange design decisions.
The story is solid and I found it pretty enjoyable, but the tutorial section makes a little less sense every time I play or see it. It just doesn't really work for me in the sense that it blatently breaks with the gameplay and it makes little sense to me character wise. It feels very artificial.
Also the ending of the game came a bit out of nowhere. You should know what's up with MC-Boy by that time, but the ultimate conclusion just happened without any explanation as to why it was possible.
The little sister has simultaniously a too little and too big part in the story. Too little because she is a bit underutilized for how important the game pretends she is, and too much because the voice actress sounds like she's phoning it in, exacerbated by the good voice acting of the rest of the main cast.
The game is also full of asian light novel plots in the background if you know what to look for. It's kind of amusing to me now, because I never noticed that when I was playing it over a decade ago.

Graphics wise it still looks pretty good, the animations where a mix of good and wonky back then and they still are - in the remaster as well from what I have seen, in case you were wondering.

The world design is pretty meh. It's functional, but unexciting. Exploration feels rarely rewarding and everything kind of blends together after a while.

The music is forgettable at best and annoying at worst. It's okay, but the rather limited amount of tracks that you keep hearing over and over really overstays it's welcome.

I started the Last Remnant 4 times before I beat it once, and yet I keep coming back. The main draw for me is the battle system. The main source of frustration is also the battle system.
Why I like it: It's unique. I haven't seen any game using a system quite like it. You have battle groups consisting of 1 - 5 combatants. I have found no skills that I thought were completely useless and they stay relevant throughout the whole game. After almost every fight someone levels up something, which I find very satisfying.
Why I don't like it: There is a substantial amount of randomness that makes little sense. You get between 3 and 6 (ish - haven't counted them, might be 5, the game is obsessed with 5es) general commands (use physical skills, use magic skills, heal, that sort of stuff), but who does what is very unpredictable. Also, why do I get to choose between 3 useless options when my whole team is currently on fire and sinking rapidly? Have a unite with 150+ AP, all pretty good fighters, and tell them to use their skills? For some reason one of them uses a tier 1 skill for 5AP. In a fight where you really could have used a slightly higher damage output then you bring to the typical picknick. A battle group could really use a resurrection for one of their members? None of the groups think it's a useful idea to give you access to a command that would do that. Superpowers that would allow you to maybe survive a close fight? Nah, we won't do that because of bad moral. In almost 250 hours I have seen once that a member of a group with an incapacitated leader (which is once of the worse problems a group can have) had the bright idea to resurrect said leader. Your people are idiots, it's that simple.
Generally I hate the moral system. It's a downward spiral that is generally bad for you. If the fight is average you can just ignore it, but when it counts the moral tends to work against you a lot because of how it interacts with what combat options you can choose.
Also QTEs. So many QTEs. The Last Remnant is from an era where rumblepacks were the cool new stuff (more is better, right? Let's rumble all the time for any reason possible, the longer the better, yeah!) and QTEs where all the rage. Luckily you can deactivate both. Unluckily this means that the game will do the QTEs for you and do an okay but not amazing job at it, meaning you fight with less efficiency than if you do it yourself and hit the QTEs. Which I can't do well anymore. Nothing says you are 15 years older than coming back to a game you used to be good at but now you hit like 80% of the timings.

To close this out a little list of weird stuff that really shouldn't be in the final product:
* your quest log is worse than Baldurs Gate 1, the original. At most it tells you the general region and the fact that you have a quest at all. The Wiki is your friend, do not hesitate to use it.
* Rush get's to chosse a mystic art manually (a spell, basically) when he levels up the skill group. That is not the case for combat arts, you cannot decline and in 99% of the cases you have exactly one option. Why is this still here? It should have been axed during development.

Generally I recommend using a Wiki for the side stuff. Finding special monsters or specific materials is just unbelievably tedious otherwise.

Great game. Combact System, Class Progress & Encounters are different from other games. It needs a while to get used to. When you figured out, how thinks work, how to progress and how to discover Side Quests & Missions, its a loooot of fun. I also liked the story. A lot of side content can be discovered. [h2] 優缺點都相當突出的先鋒性“試驗品”--《The Last Remnant 最後的遺跡》通關後的個人感想 [/h2]

昨天（2025年5月10日），在被尾王狠狠虐了一個下午後，終於在臨近吃晚飯的18點左右才擊敗了他並看到了遊戲的結局。扣掉當初剛購買遊戲時的嘗鮮（或者說溫故）時間以及在PC端和steam deck端來來回回調試的時間，我的一週目時長大概落在85小說左右。我必須公正地說一句：若不是《TLR》算是我“念念不忘”系列之三（前二已在去年補完：仙劍1和天之痕，後續則還有兩款：仙劍4和幻想三國志2），今時今日再讓我從頭入坑的話，我可能僅能堅持到中盤就棄遊了。因而本遊戲我不會給出推薦建議，僅僅是“自肥”，做一個通關留念。

《TLR》最早是在2008年11月20日於Xbox360發售的，隔年在2009年的3月底4月初，陸續以加強版的形式移植到PC平台（包括在09年4月9日登上steam）；隨後，遊戲又以重置版（實則是畫質增強版而已）的名義分別於2018年12月6日和2019年6月10日登上PS4和switch平台，最後還於2019年12月12日發佈在兩大移動平台（安卓和iOS）。因而遊戲有3個版本，原版（Xbox360版），PC版，以及官方重置版。PC版在原版的基礎上整合新增了不少新的內容（例如額外的DLC內容，增加可僱傭的“有名有姓”的隊長人選，提高遊戲戰鬥速度等），而官方重置版則是在PC版的基礎上僅僅改進了畫面和操控主角在場景內的行動速度。而最為惡劣的則是，SE於重置版上線前夕，2018年9月5日下架了steam遊戲，並且時至今日，不管是原版還是重置版都未在steam上架。雖然偶爾還可以在SE的官網全球商店/亞馬遜的各區域商店買到零散的steam key，但基本上可以說，在PC端，《TLR》已經是絕版了。有時候真的是不得不感歎，“SE，真有你的啊！”

而且，不管是Xbox360版，PC版，亦或是重置版（無論哪個平台），遊戲都沒有內建中文翻譯，對於亞洲區的玩家來說，要麼就老老實實玩日文或英文版，要麼就考慮在PC版上使用多年前大陸那邊製作的“簡體漢化”補丁；加上後者後雖說能讓華語玩家更容易遊玩本遊，但一些年代久遠的小瑕疵則是無法避免（翻譯錯漏，詞不達意）。但得益於遊戲這麼多年以來，一直有一個穩定的玩家社區，不少便民的工具（TLRPlaner、調整怪物難度的補丁）和各種詳盡的攻略（大部分是英文）的產出，因此我個人還是更加傾向於遊玩PC版。這也是為何我在2020年1月6日於SE的歐洲官網商店購入遊戲的原因之一。然而，PC端遊戲由於採用的虛幻3引擎過於老舊，導致其在現今的windows11上遊玩時，AMD顯卡和Inter顯卡都會出現遊玩一段時間後，無法繼續加載遊戲進而導致遊戲無限跳出的毛病；若遇到此種情況，則必須手動前往顯卡驅動頁面，清除著色器快取Shader Cache後才能再次正常遊玩。而這一問題發作的頻率大概半小時到1小時不等，著實有些惱人。本人的桌面端PC的RX6800顯卡在嘗試了各種辦法後，依舊無法解決這一“跳出問題”，因而最終不得不轉戰steam deck。在steam deck上倒是能沒有任何問題的順暢遊玩，但民間“漢化補丁”則由於編碼問題而無法在steam deck上正常顯示，打上補丁後反而是滿屏幕亂碼“@@@@@”橫行。因而最終，本次通關，我選擇了跟隨steam遊戲社區裡的英文指南，幾乎全程看著英文通關了全遊戲。得益於指南作者超詳細的說明，一路上雖有“磕磕絆絆”，最終也是圓滿地了結了《TLR》，再次完成了一款“念念不忘”。

《TLR》的長處在於它獨特的戰鬥機制：雖然是回合制，但並不能具體指定每個角色所要採取的行動，行動指令是下達給最多上限5人的“小隊”這一整體的，因而多出不少戰略性和策略性上的考量。而有些指令則是讓“AI”根據當下戰況判斷各人物所要執行的動作，更是增添了不少的“隨機性”（有時候能有“神”發揮來“救場”，但有時候卻又“亂來”）。人物的養成方面，也很多樣化，並不死板，只要符合條件，所以角色的職業都可以轉變，所能學習到的技能也可以根據玩家的心意來抉擇。由於，角色的職業在擔任隊長時，會據此衍生出額外特殊的行動指令，因而同一個人物有可能在“資深者”手裡發揮出200%的實力。遊戲雖然是回合制，但戰鬥中卻不墨跡，由於行動指令是根據小隊數量來產生的，為此每回合所要下達的命令數量並不會很多，也因此回合和回合間的“垃圾時間”很少，真正的戰鬥過程可以用“兔起鶻落”、“乾淨利落”來形容。也因此整個戰鬥系統的深度和趣味性都有所保證，可以研究的內容是真的不少。

但同樣的《TLR》的短處也會被大多數現代玩家所厭棄：大量的主線和支線內容都需要老老實實地去看攻略，否則一些“限時”的支線任務就會被錯過，進而失去一些很“有價值”的獎勵。遊戲整體的步調還是偏慢，角色新技能的獲取是根據所其使用技能的頻率的增長而獲得的。沒有人物等級，取而代之的是“Battle Rank”，戰鬥等級，它會隨著擊殺的怪物數量和質量而提升，而怪物則會根據我方的BR等級浮動它們的戰鬥表現：每個怪物都有其基準的BR值。我方BR低於怪物的基準BR值，系統判定屬於“面對強敵”且打贏後，我方人物能力數值成長顯著；我方BR高於敵方基準BR，系統判定屬於“輕鬆的戰鬥”，但怪物能力數值隨之上升，且打贏後，我方BR經驗大幅度上升、但人物能力數值成長寥寥。因而沒搞明白“BR”這一系統的玩家，就有可能陷入“越打怪，越打不過怪”的“怪圈”。相信聰明的你已經看出來了，《TLR》的學習門檻著實不低，更不要說遊戲中還有各種華麗的“禁咒”、“遺跡武器技”、“召喚”、“雙人合體技能”，這些東西沒攻略指點，哪怕是運氣好學到了，可能也在戰鬥中壓根施展不出來。這些“難搞”、“晦澀”、沒有直接教學的機制，要怪就怪本作的製作人“河津秋敏”吧，他的設計理念和個人風格一向如此。【此段引述自人物wiki】雖然這些內容極大地增強了遊戲的深度，但也不可避免地會對玩家進行“篩選”，相信現今時代的玩家會被勸退的不在少數。

總的來說，《TLR》就是這麼一款挑人的遊戲。喜歡它的人會孜孜不倦地對它的人物/戰鬥系統進行深入的研究；討厭它的人估計一看到開場動畫中角色走路的姿態（當年的人物骨架技術還不夠完善，導致走路姿勢頗為奇怪）就心生厭棄了。而SE似乎也是把本作當成一個各種遊戲系統的“試驗場地”來對待，雖然“很潮很新奇”，但哪怕17年後的今天本作也依舊是個沒有後續的“孤品”，似乎這個IP已經被徹底遺忘在了歷史的角落。

之所以本作會成為我個人的“念念不忘”，則是因為當年我玩到本作的時候，正巧是剛來澳洲留學、剛剛發病不久後的時間節點。那個時候的我集迷茫、惶恐、混亂的心情於一身，是本作，或者說是本作的遊玩過程，才讓當時的我慢慢地平靜下來，開始慢慢地適應和展開新的生活。而我記得的很清楚，當年在打到“星海的巫女”這一支線任務時，由於課業的壓力、生活的瑣事而不得不暫時擱置了進度。而這一耽擱，就是將近15年，呵~ 但何其有幸，我在2020年年初在steam購買了本遊戲的正版，而如今2025年年中，則是終於將這遲到15年的旅程給畫下一個“句點”。

至此，我可以宣佈：《The Last Remnant》堂堂完結，“掛念”已了。

Hier schaue ich ein wenig mit einem lachenden und zwei weinenden Auge drauf. Auch weil es mein allererstes Steamspiel war. Und ja, ich habe drei Augen!
Lachend, weil das Spiel als riesiges Rundenstrategiespiel mit zig Geheimnissen für mich eigentlich super funktioniert hat.
Weinend, weil die auswählbaren Elemente in jeder Runde zufällig waren. Was eine taktische Planbarkeit unmöglich machte. Wer ist nur auf diese hirnrissige Idee gekommen?
Das zweite weinende Auge hätte dann beinahe zum Abbruch des Spieles geführt. Ich bin ein großer Freund vom Grinden, wenn das Spiel dadurch im weiteren Verlauf einfacher wird. Hier ist es aber so, dass die Gegner unsagbar schwer werden, je besser Du bist (Instandkills). Dies in Verbindung mit "dem ersten weinenden Auge" machte Kämpfe im weiteren Verlauf des Spieles zu einer wilden Reload-Orgie, um gewisse Gegner überhaupt besiegen zu können.

You're not missing out on anything by skipping this.

I promise you the battle system isn't as in depth as people claim it to be. If anyone even claims that. It's just that literally nothing in this game is explained. You don't get to know what your stats do, how to get to another class, or what your class even does. Shields have an evasion statistic but there's also a defense statistic coming from weapons. How do you know which is better? I don't know what one point of Eva means or one point of Def so I can't compare them.

It really feels like this game isn't done. The story feels incredible bare bones, the sidequests feel similar. These things are there because that's what you need for a jrpg to be a jrpg but there's no care behind them. Why does this game even exist? The world also feels super bland, dungeons and the overland maps are all incredibly flat and boring visually. There are some that go up a bit or down a bit, but really everything in this game is boring to look at.

I can't imagine anyone thought the battle system would be fun if they tried it out on pen and paper. It also feels halfway finished. They almost got somewhere different than just "I spam the A button on attack 20 turns in a row" but anything leading them away from that doesn't feel complete. It really wants to go harder into being a strategy game and unfortunately isn't able to find a satisfying way to.

This game makes me want to play FF12 instead. I don't know why my brain keeps inserting the thought that I'm just playing a rip off of that game. I haven't played that game in a long time and barely remember anything about it, but I'm gonna go with it.

I will beat this game...... eventually. All in all a weird but fun JRPG. Game systems can be confusing and the leveling system is... not great.... but the game holds up even to this day. This game won't change your life or anything, but I can't help but love the mystery this game holds as well as the unknowingness of the level system. Solid 7/10 for JRPG players, 8/10 for me due to nostalgia/desire to eventually beat the game

Don't pay a penny for this.

Not sure why this game is highly rated by anyone. The characters are forgettable at best and the protagonist is downright unlikeable. The game prefers to keep the player in a state of guessing what the lore might be as opposed to showing or telling how the world and setting are supposed to work and on the rare occasions that explanations are given, they come in the form of clunky, expository dialogue (really monologues with other characters present but not contributing).

Por otra parte, el juego tiene partes en las que me han obligado a dejar de centrarme en la historia principal para farmear, ya que la dificultad aumentó, esto sumado al punto de cosas perdibles a mi me frustra, porque siento que entonces para pasarmelo necesito estar mirando una guía, porque se crean situaciones del tipo "ah, que no cogiste esta misión antes de hacer esta? pues ya no puedes cogerla, y esta misión era para desbloquear esta ubicación o personaje, así que te quedas sin estos y sorpresa, son super buenos, y no has ido a hablar con este fulano 3 veces entre esta quest y esta otra? pues también lo has perdido, y el tema de mejorar los items de los compañeros o que habilidades pueden aprender? good luck". En esos momentos fue cuando más me desesperó el juego, sin embargo en cinematicas e historia me ha parecido muy bueno, el tema de la moral también me perdí la explicación para poder hacer invocaciones o ataques especiales. Y no poder realmente decidir bien que hace cada uno también me desespera un poquito porque no tienes un autentico control, había ocasiones que quería curar al escuadron 2 pero solo me dejaba al 1. Pero la parte buena es que sin estar mejorado a tope, sin hacerte todas las misiones, los mejores objetos, etc el juego te lo puedes pasar, igual tienes que dedicarle 70 horas en vez de 40, pero por terminar puedes terminartelo. Es posible que este juego no sea para mí porque no me mueva tanto el explorar al punto de hacer cada misión secundaria antes de avanzar cualquier misión principal y farmear 200 bichos para que todos los personajes esten al máximo. Lo que si es un puntazo negativo es lo puñeteramente pesados que son los compañeros, había veces que era abrir el mapa y todo dios tenía una lista de la compra, "Ey nen necesito imperium, ey nen necesito manzanas", sin querer volvias a entrar en la ciudad por spamear el A, le dabas otra vez al mapa y lista de la compra round 2. Aún así ya os digo, cinemática e historia me parecen buenos, y los combates y todo el tema de los squads una vez que profundizas es interesante.

Square Enix did a great job on this turn-base RPG. It has a unique turn-base combat system that offers a diverse team building. Just a heads up, like many games of its era, it has poor dialogue in it's cutscenes. Wish this game had a longer story for more gameplay.

Siempre lo he tenido ahi en la recamara esperando a darle cera y ha sido en estas navidades cuando ha ocurrido. El sistema de combate es genial. Las mecanicas de despiece y mineria frescas. La historia profunda y a la vez emocionante. Gusto personal las voces en japones lo he disfrutado mas. En fin sabia que era un gran JRPG pero no sabia que lo necesitaba y me esta sirviendo para esperar al monster hunter wilds a ver si lo acabo que como buen juego de este genero te vas de secundarias y se te va el santo al cielo.
