Really gorgeous little game. I had it in my library for ages, and I'm really glad I finally picked it up. The gameplay style and dark folklore tone reminded me a bit of Simogo's Year Walk, which I also loved.

The presentation and interface are very minimal, a first-person adventure with a single-click interface (left click to advance and interact, and right click moves you backward) and mostly static backgrounds and sprites with simple paperdoll animation. The puzzles are pretty straightforward, with generous in-game hints to walk you through if you get stuck. This is a lovely example of a simple system used to very good effect. The gorgeous art is a real draw, with very nice music, including a couple of vocal pieces that feature in puzzles, and sound design that bring the evocative landscapes to life.

Everything is grounded in Norse myth and history, with authentic runes, clothing, and decorative motifs. The voices in Old Norse (with subtitles) were a particularly nice touch. The game is just long enough to spend a few hours exploring and immersing yourself in this eerie, atmospheric, well realized world.

Un 'point and click' relativamente corto, pero que logra generar una atmósfera exquisita. Te logra cautivar tanto por el apartado sonoro como por la propia trama, también porque se siente muy auténtico en cuanto a la mitología y 'folklore' nórdico. Tal y como me la paso diciendo, no soy muy fan de las aventuras point & click, pero cuando un trabajo de este estilo me parece más que sobresaliente, debo reconocerlo y aplaudirlo. The Frostrune es exactamente eso, ya que lo disfruté de principio a fin. Lo había jugado en móvil hace muchos años, y me alegra haberlo comprado en Steam.

Si bien el título se me hizo algo corto, es muy divertido y ameno de jugar. La estética, los escenarios planteados y la banda sonora me parecieron espectaculares. La historia es interesante y te intriga lo suficiente como para seguir jugando. La mayoría de los puzles tienen un nivel de complejidad y desafío adecuados, aunque hay un par que son un poco rebuscados. La ambientación nórdica me encanta, y el desarrollo y conclusión de la trama me parecen bastante bien logrados.

Como dije, se me hizo un poco corto. Me habría gustado poder disfrutar más de este juegazo, pero no puedo dejar de admirar el empeño que los desarrolladores le pusieron a este juego: se nota que hicieron The Frostrune con mucho cariño y esfuerzo. El precio me parece adecuado en relación con el contenido y la calidad del título. Por supuesto que lo recomiendo.

Note for 100% completionists: Play one run without any guide. Then you can get the rest of the achievements by looking at a guide. You can do it in two extra runs, one for the speed run, one for the rest. A speedrun run takes about 30 minutes.

Nachdem unser Schiff einen Sturm nicht standhalten konnte, wurden wir als einzige Überlende von den Wellen an die Küste getragen. Eine rettende Siedlung ist nicht fern, doch dort angekommen scheint diese hastig verlassen worden zu sein. Was ist hier nur geschehen?

Auch wenn die Handlung jetzt nicht das Adventure-Rad neu erfindet, schafft es [i]The Frostrune[/i] einen durch die düstere Atmosphäre, der tollen Soundkulisse inklusive altnordischen Voiceacting und einer unglaublichen Detailverliebtheit die ganze Zeit hinweg an den PC zu fesseln. Für die Spielzeit kann man ungefähr 2 - 3 Stunden einplanen, je nachdem wie sehr man sich in der Spielwelt verliert und wie gut man durch die Rätsel kommt. [i]The Frostrune[/i] ist also ein recht kurzes Spiel, aber dafür bleibt es umso länger im Gedächtnis, alleine schon weil dort die altnordische Mythologie mal nicht total verkitscht dargestellt wird.

Die Rätsel haben einen gut durchmischten Schwierigkeitsgrad sind aber mehr auf der einfachen Seite, im Vergleich zu anderen Adventures. Knobelfüchse werden hier also nicht auf ihre Kosten kommen. Auch muss man relativ viel Backtracken bzw. hin und her laufen für manche der Rätsel, aber das ist auch der einzige Kritikpunkt den ich an [i]The Frostrune[/i] habe.

[u]Kaufempfehlung[/u]: Ich persönlich finde schon, dass das Spiel die 9,99€ wert ist, allerdings kann ich jeden verstehen, der das für die kurze Spieldauer nicht ausgeben möchte. 2,49€ ist der tiefste aufgezeichnete Preis, allerdings war [i]The Frostrune[/i] schon seit mindestens Juli 2022 nicht mehr im Sale.

I pre-ordered this game when it first came out on mobile and was immediately in love with it. I have replayed it multiple times and every time I feel like I get something new out of it. The visuals are amazing with such a unique art style. The sound design is beautiful with wonderful voice acting, music, and environmental sounds. I love all the puzzles and little hidden clues throughout the scenery. My only complaint with this game is that I want more! You can finish it pretty quickly and while it's satisfying, with such a wonderful story you can't help but feeling disappointed that it's over. I would be absolutely thrilled if there was ever a sequel. I would 100% buy it! I hope there is more to this story in the future but for now I will continue replaying it lol

OK!!! I am going to be very honest about this review. This game is absolutely interesting BUT! As a player who loves to complete a game 100% can be difficult.

Good things about the game:
The puzzles are great.
Good music. 🎶
The art is very beautiful.
The story is interesting.
The voice acting is great.

The price is fine but can be lower since the game isn't that long.

Now the not-so-good:
This game has achievements but some of them are difficult to get. You need to re-play the game several times and try to get them which can be frustrating. 😤

So, for those who love to get all the achievements this can be negative. Overall if you just love to play the game for what it is and don't care too much about 100% achievements then this game can be good for you.

I will say I do recommend it because I think it is a good game... shhh...without the achievements 😂

A bit of a lukewarm recommend. You'll enjoy it if you're into Norse mythology and if you enjoy riddle-style puzzles rather than "put this jigsaw together" or "flick switches until all the lights turn green".

Pros: Art, atmosphere and Norse history. Those who enjoy clues and riddles will like the gameplay.

Cons: Difficult to navigate, with no map - I'd advise making a sketch of which paths lead where. Puzzles and clues are baffling if you're playing while tired at bedtime. This isn't a game of "here's a jigsaw; solve it". It's more a "here's a riddle; go and work out where to apply it". I was too brain-dead and followed a walkthrough. It was also rather uncompelling plotwise; the protagonist was irrelevant to the story.

Some will enjoy it. It depends what sort of puzzles you like solving.

Je viens juste de terminer The Frostrune.
C'est un jeu plaisant, je l'ai choisi pour l'univers de jeu qu'il propose : la mythologie et les légendes vikings ainsi que la culture et les paysages scandinaves anciens.
Ce n'est pas un documentaire... cela reste un jeu bien sur.
Les graphismes sont très plaisant, le type de jeu est du type : écran de jeu avec des actions possibles à la souris et l'on se déplace vers un autre écran de jeu avec d'autres actions possibles.
Au départ les déplacements sont limités et petit à petit le monde s'étoffe. Il est nécessaire de faire des aller et retour mais ce n'est pas trop contraignants.
Si vous êtes bloqués dans le jeu, des astuces sont disponibles via le menu au fur et à mesure de votre avancement dans le jeu.
Vous allez devoir découvrir ce qui se passe sur cet ile et les différents évènements qui on pu avoir eu lieu
[spoiler]Finalement l'histoire//l'intrigue en elle même est assez simple quand on a fini le jeu[/spoiler]
Globalement je suis content de cette expérience, cela correspond assez à mes attentes. Ce n'est pas un grand jeu mais ce fut plaisant.
Les énigmes sont relativement logique et les informations acquises au cours du jeu sont précieuses et bien construites pour participer à l'histoire et avancer dans le jeu.
Un autre avantage le jeu n'est pas très long à finir.

It is a pleasant game, I chose it for the game universe that it offers: mythology and Viking legends as well as ancient Scandinavian culture and landscapes.
It’s not a documentary... it’s still a game of course.
The graphics are very pleasant, the type of game is of the type: game screen with possible mouse actions and one moves to another game screen with other possible actions.
Initially, travel is limited and little by little the world grows. It is necessary to go back and forth but it is not too restrictive.
If you are stuck in the game, tips are available via the menu as you progress through the game.
You’re gonna have to find out what’s going on on this island and the various events that may have taken place

Overall I am happy with this experience, it corresponds quite to my expectations. It is not a great game but it was pleasant.
The puzzles are relatively logical and the information acquired during the game is valuable and well-constructed to participate in the story and advance in the game.
Another advantage the game is not very long to finish.

Frostrune is an absolutely beautiful game. The art is stunning, and even though it's mostly static, it doesn't take away from its' beauty. It's also definitely not 6 hours, but that's what happens when you leave the game running to listen to the music.

Speaking of which, music is very nice too, adding to the atmosphere. Your protagonist's remarks aren't voiced, but what few NPC dialogue and narration you encounter is and apparently recorded in Old Norse. Icing on the cake, really.

The Frostrune is an adventure game, sort of point&click, with a simple interface designed to work on mobiles as well. There are a few riddles, not particularly difficult if you've been paying attention to your surrondings while exploring. I think only one stumped me for a while, because frankly, I misunderstood what you were supposed to do, but other than that - no rubber ducky. Also, it's worth noting that should you ever get hopelessly stuck, there is a hint system that can basically guide you through the game. But it does pay off to not look there.

The story and length of the game are probably its' weakest points. Story because, well... it is pretty straightforward. You get a rough idea of what must have happened very early on and yup, that's what happened. No surprises there. You also aren't presented with any choices, but there are few additional things you can do. As for the length, according to the store page, Frostrune is finishable in 2 to 5 hours, taking away the time I had it just running in the background I did it in 3.5-4. So the gameplay time is on the shorter end of average for this genre. Could be longer though, I wouldn't mind.

To sum it up then!

PROS:
+ absolutely beautiful
+ nice music and voiceovers
+ have I mentioned how beautiful the art is?
+ well thought out riddles
+ solid story....

CONS:
- ...that isn't particularly surprising
- short

Would I recommend it? Absolutely, though considering the length of it, perhaps on a discounted price. Also, unless you missed some achievements, Frostrune isn't particularly replayable. No choices to change, no new paths to take. Like a beatiful comic book that you read once and remember fondly.

Its focus on proper norse mythology is amazing. The language spoken is as right as it can be, and most of the design is pretty accurate too. What first attracted me to this game was it"s beauty, the artwork is perfect for this type of game. And it"s fun gathering artefacts. The only mild criticism is that it is very fiddly to play on a phone, although it can be done. I really enjoyed the journey through the levels unlocking things. While this is a well-made lovely game with nice graphics, nice music, and interesting mythology, I found some of the gameplay to be obtuse. Dies ist ein kniffliges Spiel und man muss genau auf alle Details und Texte achten. Das Spiel ist nichts für zwischendurch und benötigt die volle Aufmerksamkeit des Spielers.
Mir hat es sehr gut gefallen auch die Jagd auf die Erfolge, auch wenn das etwas gedauert hat. Da Spiel hat ein super Design und auch tolle Musik, leider kann man weder die Lautstärke verringern noch die Musik komplett abschalten. Mindestens beim ersten Durchlauf benötigt man auch alle Sounds. ;)

[i]The Frostrune[/i] is an elegant point-and-click adventure, with strong, authentic Norse culture.

The story is set in and around an abandonned, coastal hamlet. The environment feels great. I used to live in Norway, and could see the familiar lighting and landscape features in the portrayal in the game). The hand-drawn art style is consistent and rich - a quick look at the trailer on the Steam Store page will give you a feel for it. The animations are simple, but very effective. Overall, I like it very much.

There is a story, but it is not a strong one. I see this game as more about the art, culture and puzzles than any deep narrative. However, it is dark. There are dead bodies of people and animals... plus there are supernatural elements. I wouldn't call it Scandinavian horror (for example, like [i]Year Walk[/i]), but it does have a grim side to it.

It is not a complicated game. I don't often play point-and-click games, and usually struggle when I do. I found this one manageable, and did not resort to a guide at any stage. It took me 7 hours on my playthrough and I got 15/20 of the achievements. The puzzles are not too complicated and the "hidden" objects to find are not obscure, but neither were they blatantly obvious either.

The interface is simple and clean and suits the style well. Having an in-game volume control would have helped, and the ability to save games would be nice. It does save the game between sessions, but you can't have more than one game going at a time, and if it crashes you need to start again.

The audio is excellent. The spoken parts are in Old Norse. The sound track is atmospheric and not too intrusive. The sound effects are good.

IRL I have done research on Nordic history and have given public lectures on the Norse Weltanschauung. I know some Old Norse language, but it's pretty rusty now. I could follow some of it, but I still relied on the Norwegian subtitles for the rest. (There are subtitles in other languages: German, English, etc..). I found the Norse language superb and it really added a lot. The use of runic script was also very good. I regard the game as being very faithful to our academic understanding of Norse culture, art and knowledge. This makes for a very refreshing change from the usual Hollywood-esque clichés that sadly permeate most modern titles on the subject. One detail that delighted me was the use of an iron block (not anvil!) in the blacksmith's hut.

In summary, if you like Nordic Dark Age life and beliefs, then I can strongly recommend this title. And I conclude this review by commending the developers on their exquisite attention to historical and cultural details. Well done!

Прошла её целиком, очень понравилась эта нордическая атмосфера, древнескандинавская озвучка, красочные локации и сюжет, завязанный на мифологии викингов.
Понравилась настолько, что когда я встретила её в Steam, то купила без раздумий.
Кому-то она может показаться скучной или короткой, но хотя бы ради атмосферы стоит разок пройти.

Un point-and-click très agréable à jouer, quoique qu'un peu trop court.
Ce jeu est une sorte de long poème, qui s'inspire de la mythologie nordique, des croyances celtes et des légendes vikings. Une promenade onirique, où l'on évolue de scènes en scènes, pour essayer de ramener la vie dans un monde envahi par le gel et la mort.

This was a pretty decent first-person point-and-click adventure with nice graphics and atmosphere. I don't know if it really was, but it seemed more historically accurate than the usual fare while also combining nordic mythology. Most of the puzzles were good, and there were a few tougher puzzles, but there's an integrated hint system... that I did use at least four times... Special mention to the viking ghost singers who were amazing. Potential negatives would be the short length (2-3 hours) and that there's a lot of walking back and forth around the land without a map. But you eventually do get your bearings and it feels more immersive that way.

Took me 5,3h to beat it with all achievements and the first walkthrough without any hints given by game or the internet. So i would say i beat the game as its intended to beat. Its almost 2€/h and thats not very cheap but its a game worth to play because the soundtrack, the voice actors and the drawing are beautiful. If you are interested in norse storys it is worth playing. I would not say that you need genre experience because this was my first Point & Click and i liked it.

An short but well produced story. The story is been telling in an original (old) northic language (perhaps swedish/norwegian) - it sound very beautiful and authentic. You can even learn some things about the meaning of some old runes.
You can cheat yourself throught, because you can use hints for every step, but you don't have to ;)
I was impressed about some puzzles - they used some acient a cappella chants and you can switch the choir voices. It sounds very good and was a great little sparkling moment.

But missed any background music. It's a lttle shame that the devs didn't include background music while solving the puzzles and run from A to B..... They really missed the chance to make it AWESOME. It would have been great to listen to acient chants the whole game through....

Nevertheless - you really feel that the devs have a great knowledge about the acient northic culture.
Looking forward to the next game!

Приятно окунуться в скандинавскую мифологию и почувствовать себя героиней, оказавшейся на острове, где твоя же жизнь и жизнь самого места "приземления" зависит от тринадцатилетней девочки-подростка, которая (в отличие от большинства современных детей) очень хорошо справилась с весьма непосильной ношей.
Жаль опять же, что игра коротквата и некий ужас надвигающейся зимы не был передан сполна. Но в игру приятно поиграть и она более-менее стоит своих денег.

Decent point and click puzzle game, but doesn't go much beyond that. There are a few occasions where there is little to no direction/indication as to what you should be doing. High potential for hunt the pixel, but doesn't veer into that territory if one looks at each screen for more than 3 seconds.

Feels like a mobile port, though.

Regular price (10$) is REALLLLLYYYYYYYY pushing it but it's within what it's worth. Want to be safe? Pick it up for 5-7$.

Pourtant, j'adore ce genre de jeux, les légendes nordiques, etc mais impossible d'expliquer pourquoi le temps m'a paru atrocement long sur The Frostrune !

Enfin si, je peux expliquer pourquoi c'était très long (le temps...), je me suis ennuyé. Vraiment. Le scénario ne m'a pas convaincu et le style avec des passages de lieux en lieux, cette fois, ne m'a pas plu du tout ! De plus, les énigme s ne m'ont pas séduit et la durée de vie est bien trop courte ! Et puis les nombreux allers-retours... Oui c'est beau, oui la bande-sonore est vraiment canon (les chants nordiques !) mais cela ne fait pas tout !

Je termine avec une magnifique citation de Pascal qui fait hyper classe dans une notation Steam, « Le cœur a ses raisons que la raison ignore ». Je sais, vous vous dites "quel talent, il est vraiment amazing !" mais n'essayez pas de me soudoyer, ma note restera sévère ! >> 10/20

I love this game. Normally I'm not a fan of point and click games but this is fresh and interesting enough to warrant me recommending it. Also, as a witch and Norse pagan it's really interesting to get into and learn some more about how bindrunes and witchcraft works. I've got it on my phone too so I've got it portable! 10/10 would recommend and I'd love a second instalment or more games from them.

Okay, so I was skeptical about this game for many reasons, one of them being I haven't played a point and click in over a decade. The other was that I was worried a point and click would not be worth more than $5 if its under 5 hours. However, I decided to read the reviews. I saw that people said it is historically and culturally accurate, which I crave in my Scandinavian content, so I bit the bullet and got it.

It is a beautiful game. I don't know who did all of the art, but they deserve copious amounts of praise. The narrative was very intriguing, and was a ton of fun to follow. Especially since it was presented to you in a Nordic tongue (North Germanic). It made the journey all that more enjoyable and immersive.

Also, through the entire game, something was nagging me about the music's tone. Something about it seemed so familiar. It wasn't until the credits rolled and I saw "Wardruna" that it started to make sense. I'm not sure whether they composed everything/anything really or if they just helped, but either way it was all very good. And whoever Alexander Kristoffersen Lykke is (saw him on a Youtube page talking about composing it), just so you know...I very much enjoyed the warriors' song (Rísinn, Dísin, Óðinn, Ísinn). It was enchanting, thank you for your hard work!

Give the game a shot, you will not regret it. It is an underappreciated gem. 5/5

5,5/10 Pierwszoosobowa przygodówka w klimatach nordyckich. Nic szczególnego. Przeklikujemy się przez szereg plansz 2D i szukamy odpowiednich przedmiotów, rozwiązujemy łamigłówki i w sumie tyle. Oprawa taka sobie - paleta barw w moim guście, ale jakoś taka mało szczegółowa - grafiki gier HOPA od Artifex Mundi są dużo ładniejsze. Jedyne co mi się spodobało, to pieśni duchów wojowników. Muzyka niestety jest tylko tłem. Kupiłem za 9 zł, więc nie żałuję takich pieniędzy, ale oczekiwałem czegoś lepszego. Mimo to polecam, bo to nie jest zła gra.

This is an absolutely gorgeous game. I loved how it played like a classic point and click adventure game, yet had a completely hand-painted style that fit the theme perfectly. Though the artwork alone makes it worth playing, the music is also wonderful, and I found the puzzles to be really fun too. It isn't the longest game (took me about 2 hours, but I used the hint system a lot), but I definitely recommend it.

Why put a speedrun achievement for an adventure/quest game is beyond my comprehension. It defeats the very purpose of such game - exploration and experiencing the story.
Anyway, the game is good. I love Norse mythology and I love seeing stories related to that.

PS: I really like the songs the warriors sing, both in the temple and in the marshes. I don't know if they're real Viking songs but they surely have the vibe.

A good, but very short game.
Everything else I can say can be summed up to that. It is very well made. It's a simple point and click with minimalist interface, yet it was clearly made with love. The art, the voice acting, the atmosphere, it's all incredibly well done for something so simple.
All that is only diminished by the fact that the game is so very short. I beat the thing in just under 2 hours, and a decent chunk of that was just spent going back and forth on the map trying to remember 'wait, which fork took me to that one spot?'
It's a good game, I'd recommend anyone pick it up and play it, I don't think I would recommend buying it for the full $10 price. I'm sorry to the creator, again I can tell this was made with some real love, but it's simply too short to merit that.
But if you catch it on sale, then yeah pick it up with no regrets.

Such a beautiful game; from the art to the music to the myths/legends, I just really enjoyed it all even when I got stuck trying to figure out the next step. There's some kind of hint system, but I can't say anything about how it works since I didn't use it (achievement unlocked). It helps to take screenshots of stuff in case you can't memorize because then you can open your screenshots in the Steam overlay to look at the answers to the puzzles; or if you're like me, you just take screenshots of cool stuff in games and end up with the answers without necessarily trying.

I do wish there were an easier way to get around, such as a map where you can just click where you want to go instead of having to backtrack through each scene to get where you need to go (kind of like flipping back through the pages of a book to find that one sentence you need to re-read), but it's at least a pretty journey and changing scenes isn't exactly slow (it can just take several scene changes to get where you need to be).

I'd say if you like puzzles and/or Norse myths and/or good art and/or good music then would probably enjoy this game.

My hints: spacebar opens inventory (or click the pouch icon) and right-click backtracks through scenes (or you can left click near the arrow on the screen). I couldn't find a keybind for the seer's staff, which would be great if there was one but not a big deal that there isn't.

I feel some kind of sympathy for the project. This feels authentic, thus I want to give it a thumb up. However, the game could provide much more value by giving background information. ...
e.g. expand on its strength the authentic language and design. Terminology, history, culture, could easily be explained to the willing gamer, e.g. via tool tips, or info pages.

I feel 10€ are a lot to ask for this, since other games provide considerable higher production value and content.

The Frostrune is a short Myst-like game where you solve myth-based puzzles to defeat a Jotun who has killed a village. The blocky art fits the primitive atmosphere of a deserted Viking coastal village. The music and sound effects emphasize the setting. And the puzzles are intuitive with clues easy to find and a hint menu if you need it.

The dialogue is in some version of Norwegian with subtitles in the supported languages. As an English speaker, I enjoyed hearing the foreign dialogue to hear the similarities between that language and my own. I got to learn that apparently "frost" is a viking loan word.

Well worth your time if you enjoy puzzles and exploring the past or other cultures.
