An FMV OG that I enjoyed decades after it came out.
Wow, I somewhere along the way lost patience for slower games. I grew up on RPGs, tactics, and other games that involved hours of grinding and other deep activities after starting with Mario and sidescrollers, and then when FPS games and other fast-paced action got big, I got into those. So, it quite surprised me that when, in 2017, I tried this as a game to play with my significant other to relax and have fun. I was amazed at how fun and whimsical the game is. Every room has navigation animations, FMV of people doing random things, or puzzles to solve. I think it was its novelty that was so interesting. I have played many point-and-click adventure games and FMV games, but this is weird (in a good way). Probably one of my most crowning achievements in gaming is when I beat the puzzle that scales in difficulty based on the speed of your PC. I couldn't believe it—it's borderline impossible. And the ending was emotional and stuck with me. I highly recommend it.
The Positives:
-The FMV scenes are surprisingly charming. I know people will use "cheesy", but I thought they were cool. It's whimsical, and there's nothing quite like it. It's totally different from its contemporaries like Myst or the Sega CD games.
-While the graphics are clearly low-resolution (I hear the 25th anniversary edition helps), I had no problem seeing anything and enjoyed the visuals. The mansion is pretty cool, and it has plenty of things to explore in it.
-The puzzles are surprisingly varied in terms of type and difficulty, including the aforementioned depends-on-the-speed-of-your-PC puzzle. They were fun to figure out.
-The story goes from mysterious to starting to make sense to enlightening to emotional as you go through the game. It stuck with me, particularly the ending.
The Negatives:
-While I don't think you have to like the genre per se to like it—after all, I had been off the genre for a while and this pulled me back in—but if you don't like it then you're probably not going to like this. You'll make fun of its campiness and puzzles and such. I think it's overdone because it's trying to do something and was innovative for its time (despite seeming dated today), but my opinion that that's not fair doesn't change the fact that you probably won't like it if you have that perception of it.
-As I mentioned, the one puzzle is insanely difficult due to the game speed. The others are just fine, but hopefully the 25th anniversary edition fixes the PC performance difficulty spike.
-If you prefer games with amazing graphics or action-oriented gameplay, this just isn't for you. Again, it contained amazing visuals and gameplay for its time, but it hasn't aged well graphically—not as bad as PS1 games, in my opinion (I believe the PS1, while revolutionary for gaming, contains the worst-aging graphics ever made), but still probably an eyesore for someone growing up on Skyrim or the Telltale games.
Man, I have good memories of this game. I highly recommend it for someone who wants something different—and I mean really different. It's got mystery, puzzles, fun things to look at and do, and then ends with an emotional peak that sticks with me to this day. I know it won't be for everyone, but if you can embrace what it accomplished given the technical limitations of the day, hopefully you will not only appreciate it but have a tad bit of awe in what creativity they brought forth without decades of the genre to guide them on how to make this kind of game. It truly is something else when viewed through that lens. It's the gaming equivalent of marveling at what a Twilight Zone, Star Trek, or Star Wars was able to accomplish during the time period—antiquated by today's standards, but a milestone in its day.

One of the very first CD-ROM games, and it was magical experience watching live actors within the game.. before this games were on 1.2MB and 1.44MB floppy diskettes ... Yeah, this game has a very special place in my life. I occasionally run it to play the Microscope (Infection) puzzle over and over.. this is the hardest puzzle in this game, but it's the only one with high replayability.
When this game came out in 1993, it was a huge hit. Now, 30 years later, I've finally finished it. So does it hold up after all these years?
No.
Unlike Myst, which still thrills the imagination, 7th Guest is nothing but frustration. The puzzles are terrible. Some trivial, some require a matematician to solve, and some are not puzzles at all, but tedious games of guessing or repetition. Story is laughable, acting is even more so. Looking back at it all these years later, it becomes clear: 7th Guest was never good, it was just new and expensively made. Today it only holds historical value.

Most of my time playing this is from when I was younger, and I remember it well enough that I don't feel like replaying it. This review is pointless since it is no longer on the store. It's a good adventure game with a great soundtrack.
This was a game I played when I was young. You will need time to play this game. Not so much because of the puzzles but the lengthy slow motion camera movement while walking and turning through the house. If you just want a good game to solve puzzles while you relax with a drink, then I recommend this classic.
A seminal game for 199X, when it was released. Helped usher in multimedia and the CD generation of computing.
It's a fun puzzle adventure game. The graphics are obviously dated. It is of its time. It's not very streamlined, a lot of the puzzles aren't intuitive. The acting is horrid, but it is fun to piece together the story that is told, even though the occult bits stretch credibility. There will be frustration clicking. But it's a good pasttime if you want the challenge. And it'll be relatively quick..

A really great puzzle game. I played it back in the 1990's or 2000's when it came out on CD. Again in 2014. Not I'm going to play it again a decade later. Well worth the price if you like puzzle games.

I first played this on the Macintosh Performa, and I HAD to get it on Steam for nostalgia's sake. If you haven't played The 7th Guest VR, play this first before you get spoiled rotten on the remake!

This is an old school puzzle game with FMV to tell the story. You are a guest in a spooky house and have to solve puzzles to get further to maybe escape this place.
The puzzles aren't easy, but not ridiculously hard either. They just take some thinking to get done. While the story is a bit confusing, the puzzles and scenery are great. A fun puzzle game to get you thinking.

You know how sometimes there's a game that is special to you? Not necessarily perfect. Just special. In my case, [b]The 7th Guest[/b] is one of such games. See, I was there, [b]Gandalf[/b]. I was there three thousand years ago. I was there the day CD-ROM revolution happened. Technically, publishers started to use CDs for distribution since late 80s. Except there was nothing really special about it. We were at the point when games started to take too much space and using, like, a dozen floppies in order to install your new game felt ridiculous. Naturally, publishers just took the data from all of those floppies and put it on single CD. Problem solved. The first CD game (which was [b]Miller[/b] brothers' [b]The Manhole[/b]) was exactly like that and formula was followed by others for some time. Everything changed in 1993, where two games were released. The second one was [b]Miller[/b] brothers' [b]MYST[/b]. Which lost the race for about three months thanks to how they were slowed down a bit by publishers ([b]Activision[/b] was not interested in game for adults, while [b]Sunsoft[/b] was not interested in PC gaming). Who won the race? It was this. [b]The 7th Guest[/b]. By [b]Trilobyte[/b]. Which... wasn't even a thing at the beginning.
Unlike [b]Millers[/b], [b]Rob Landeros[/b] and [b]Graeme Devine[/b] from [b]Virgin[/b] got lucky. People in [b]Virgin[/b] proved themselves to be much smarter than those who [b]Millers[/b] tried to sell [b]MYST[/b] to and instantly made [b]Rob[/b] and [b]Graeme[/b] found their own company (you already know the name) to focus on this new kind of the entertainment. So... what's the fuss was all about? What was so different about CD-ROM games? Well, everything. Take [b]Discworld[/b] for example. A VG adaptation of [b]Sir Terry Pratchett[/b]'s legendary novels. It used whooping 15 floppies and even despite of that its makers were unable to included all the speech and sound effects they wanted. CD-ROM allowed them to achieve that and CD version of [b]Discworld[/b] had everything. Now, imagine a game, in which developers didn't need to look back at the inferior media? A game, in which they were free to use all the storage CDs had to offer. That game was [b]The 7th Guest[/b].
What was even more cool is that this game was a horror. I was one of those weird kids. All heavy metal and room full of VHS tapes with horror movies. And this game? While giving us jaw-dropping video-based visuals (the reason why it was quite easy to port to [b]CD-i[/b] system), it was everything I loved in those. While playing as [b]Ego[/b], a spirit with no memory of his origin, we'll explore a spooky mansion full of puzzles in order to learn what happened with its diabolic owner's six guests and also another one. A very special guest, who... Well, I won't spoil it to you. Let's just say that, while solving the puzzles, we'll see FMV scenes that'll tell us some dark secrets. The atmosphere was amazing, presentation was awesome, the main villain was one of the very best things ever happened back then ([b]Robert Hirschboeck[/b]'s [b]Henry Stauf[/b] is one of the most juicy characters from that era, on pair with [b]Joe Kucan[/b]'s [b]Kane[/b] from [b]C&C[/b]), while soundtrack by [b]George Sanger[/b], AKA [b]The Fat Man[/b], was a treasure on its own. And yes, there was blood. If something, it's one of the things I love the most here. The horror parts are so ridiculous (in a good way) that it feels like they were designed by a kid obsessed with such stuff.
Sure, if we'll drop presentation, [b]The 7th Guest[/b] wasn't really that awesome. Unlike [b]MYST[/b], in which puzzles were way more complicated and unique, what we've got here is much more basic. A basic word puzzle here, a chess puzzle there... Nothing groundbreaking. And that's, unfortunately, why this game didn't really age that well. Back in the days, doing those basic puzzles felt good just because of how awesome presentation was. We weren't just moving those chess pieces, we were enjoying the animation, music and, of course, [b]Henry Stauf[/b]'s insults, which were cheesy and very funny. Nowadays? When animations lost their “wow” effect? With no way to skip 'em? And with audio clips interrupting gameplay (it's an old game, hence no multitask for you – you either listen to stuff [i]or[/i] interact with the environment)? I can see lots of kids today hating all that.
Unfortunately, there's more. Despite puzzles being simple, they can also be quite messy. One of them, for example, is bugged and can leave you with no way to solve it at all. Thankfully, there's a reset option, but still, playing this game without a guide can seriously screw you up during that part. And, of course, there's an infamous microscope puzzle. Remember [b]Hex[/b]? That old board game from what? 40s? Maybe you've played some video games based on it? Like [b]Ataxx[/b]? Well,[b]Ataxx[/b] was based on unreleased game that was supposed to be called [b]Infection[/b]. And that's pretty much what we have here. We're supposed to play the “[b]Infection[/b]” against [b]Stauf[/b]. The problem was – mini-game ended up being a bit too heavy on processor, so, [b]Trilobyte[/b] decided to add a timeout limit for our opponent. Huge mistake. As the result, when playing on fast systems, AI got no limits at all and was able to see for lots and lots of moves ahead. To win against [i]that[/i] you were supposed to be, like, a professional go player.
Not a problem nowadays, though. We've got [b]DOSBox[/b] that lets us control our emulated hardware. I mean, this version does use [b]DOSBox[/b], right? Right? Well, no. It uses [b]ScummVM[/b]. Which sucks for two reasons. First – it is not a real deal. [b]ScummVM[/b] doesn't use the original executable at all and works with the game data through its own means. Sure, it means easier way to play old games on modern systems of all kinds, but guess what? In our case it isn't true. And that's the second problem. There's a whole thread on [b]ScummVM[/b] website about that but no, they didn't fix the microscope puzzle. Back in 90s, I've beaten the microscope puzzle easily. Now? It's ridiculously hard. To make you understand just how bad things are – there's some guy who wrote [url=https://analogbit.com/software/infection_ai/][b]Java[/b] app[/url], thanks to which you can make the in-game AI to play another one, from app. Naturally, I tried that and, well, AI from the app lost miserably to our ol' man [b]Stauf[/b]. Eventually, after some tries, it finally did the job, but think about it. Even AI can't beat the bloody thing! [i]That's[/i] how messed things up now!
And the funniest thing? There was no reason to torture the dead horse. A year after the initial release, [b]Virgin[/b] re-released the game for [b]Mac[/b] and after three more years, in 1997, for [b]Windows[/b]. Not so many remember that version nowadays, but yes, this game had a native [b]Windows[/b] version. With better FPS, faster animations, etc. And yes, microscope puzzle was fixed there. So, why did they want to reanimate the inferior [b]DOS[/b] version so hard? I have only one explanation. Yeah. They were lazy.
We've got bonuses, though. In [b]Bonus Content[/b] folder you'll find digital version of [b]Making Of[/b] VHS tape that was shipped with special edition of the game, there's the official script, there are so-called [b]Stauf Files[/b], which will explain characters to you, and, most importantly, there's an OST in MP3 format (unfortunately, no tracks from [b]The Fat Man and Team Fat[/b]'s [b]7/11[/b] album, which had an incredible take on game's main theme with vocals). Still, what we have here is an arguable release at best. The fact that this game didn't age well and, most likely, won't please younger audience aside, there are [i]way[/i] better ways to experience this game. Dixi.
Man, classics can be great, but come on, at least a little optimization. The music is atonal and graating, the cutscenes so pixelated and impossible to discern, and virtually every experience is slowed to a Windows 3.11 level. I know this isnt a "remaster" but I cant believe there isnt something that can be done to speed up and smooth the game by an order of magnitude.
I also never realized how ridiculous some of the puzzles are. Some of them are 4th grade level, but theres at least one that requires basically a 60 step walkthrough.
Not a bad puzzle game at all. The ambience and music are good, and the acting can be top, too. Some, I mean some, of the puzzles can be quite genius. But, it has one fatal flaw for me. The game is so slow... Everything takes like an eternity to do, and when doing puzzles sometimes the game tease you and slow the pace even more. It can be quite frustrating, specially when you are trying to solve the puzzles, which some of them, I'm sorry, are a bit of Moon Logic.
Já vou começar a review deixando bem claro: The 7th Guest é um jogo bem ruim considerando os padrões de game design modernos, e eu argumentaria que mesmo para a época seu design já era bem primitivo. Já existiam jogos narrativos e de puzzle há mais de uma década, com histórias, mecânicas e quebra-cabeças bem melhores. Porém na época em que esse jogo saiu, em 1993, ele foi extremamente aclamado - até mesmo o Bill Gates chamou o jogo na época de "o novo padrão em entretenimento interativo." Isso se deve à sua tecnologia revolucionária, sendo um dos primeiros jogos a serem lançados no CD-ROM, o que tornou possível seu uso de gráficos 3D pré-renderizados, gravações de atores reais e até mesmo sua trilha sonora gravada - e também sendo um dos grandes responsáveis pela popularização de drives de CD entre usuários de computadores.
Falando em seus aspectos técnicos, eu diria que esse é o melhor aspecto de The 7th Guest. Eu adoro a aparência da casa, tanto pelos seus gráficos quanto pela direção de arte: ela possui cômodos bem variados e uma estética bem "spooky", perfeita para jogar no Halloween. Uma parte ruim, porém, é que seus "sustos" não ocorrem automaticamente, você precisa clicar em pontos específicos do cenário se quiser para ativar as animações "assustadoras." As gravações também se encaixam muito bem com os cenários, mesmo que a atuação dos atores seja extremamente exagerada. A trilha sonora também é muito boa e, para mim, bem icônica. Eu consigo ver como esse jogo foi impressionante quando saiu, por mais que outros jogos que saíram no mesmo ano e utilizando a mesma tecnologia tenham designs bem melhores e tenham envelhecido muito bem, como Myst.
Na história do jogo, um criador de brinquedos chamado Henry Stauf se isola em uma mansão, e em determinada noite faz uma festa com seis convidados que nunca mais são vistos novamente. O jogador acorda na mansão, sem se lembrar de quem é, enquanto visualiza ecos do passado dos seis fantasmas dos visitantes, ao mesmo tempo em que tenta entender quem é o misterioso sétimo convidado que o Stauf tanto menciona. Eu gosto muito da premissa por trás do jogo, mas a história é bem mal contada, sendo vista em pedaços fora de ordem enquanto você joga e com alguns detalhes que, pelo que eu entendi, não fazem tanto sentido. O tom do jogo como um todo é bem estranho: os elementos que o jogo considera assustadores são bem bobos, enquanto os temas mais adultos e até pesados são quase ignorados. Existem algumas cenas bem memoráveis aqui, mas eu senti que pelo menos nessa primeira vez jogando as peças parece que não se encaixam muito bem.
Quanto ao seu design e sua jogabilidade, talvez sejam as partes mais falhas na minha opinião. O jogador precisa andar pela mansão e ir resolvendo quebra-cabeças lógicos, porém a maior parte deles não tem relação nenhuma com a história, e por mais que existam fisicamente no cenário não existe muito sentido no porquê de ser necessário resolver eles - mas se você considerar o jogo como um hub com vários minigames dentro, isso pode ser desconsiderado. O maior problema mesmo está nos quebra-cabeças em si: vários deles são extremamente punitivos e maçantes de jogar. Quase nenhum te dá instruções de como resolvê-lo, criando momentos em que você passa sem saber o motivo e vai pesquisar para entender o que precisava ser feito. Vários deles possuem respostas com palavras e expressões antigas improváveis de serem adivinhadas nos dias de hoje, e um deles até mesmo possui uma IA quase impossível de se ganhar por conta das CPUs mais rápidas que temos hoje. O jogo possui um sistema de pistas interno, mas você precisa caminhar até determinado quarto, o que é um processo bem lento considerando que você não pode pular nenhuma animação ou cutscene. Eu gosto de alguns deles, mas no geral acredito que um jogo de aventura point-and-click mais tradicional nesse ambiente, com um sistema de inventário, teria sido melhor.
No geral, eu achei The 7th Guest extremamente falho, e esperava bem mais dele considerando sua fama na época e seu legado no mundo dos jogos. Então por quê estou recomendando ele? Porque ainda considero ele uma parte fundamental na evolução dos jogos de computadores, gosto muito de sua atmosfera assustadora e boba ao mesmo tempo, e sei que ainda existe um público para ele - seja esse fãs de jogos antigos ou de jogos "engraçados" por seu uso de FMVs exagerados. Se você se interessa por alguma das coisas que mencionei, ou alternativamente se você é masoquista, eu recomendo esse jogo. Se não for o caso, fique longe.
(OBS: 5 horas do meu tempo de jogo foram de tentativas de começar a jogar ele no passado.)
Classic from my childhood. Totally unneeded bit of trivia: This was the game I was playing when I got the news Robin Williams died.
A couple fun puzzles, a fair number of decent puzzles, and a few of the worst puzzles I've ever encountered all mixed together. Add to that the dated graphics and terrible UI and you get a pretty rough experience. I got some fun out of it by just solving the puzzles that interested me and using a guide to easily get past the others. Even then, once I'd done all the puzzles that interested me, I just stopped playing. Even with a guide, some like the piano puzzle are just too obnoxious to deal with.

The original version has dated like milk in the visuals department, but it's still completely playable. There's a charm to the pre-rendered graphics and the soundtrack is nice. Though the sound volume of the voice acting is turned way too high in my opinion. The puzzles range from easy to very time consuming and challenging. The microscope puzzle felt almost impossible to defeat, because the AI of the minigame doesn't cut the player any slack. The chess piece puzzles are innovative and very time consuming to beat. The story is campy, cheesy and funny. If you have the patience and like to solve puzzles then give this one a try.
Listen. You have to know what you're getting yourself into, here -- It's a game from the 90s with an absurd plot, some truly chaotic puzzles, terrible UI and campy graphics and acting. It isn't scary, more spooky and sometimes silly. The puzzles range from fun, to difficult, to rip-your-hair-out frustrating. I even had to cheat one of them because for me, the computer is too difficult to beat without another computer assist.
If, however, you are the kind of person who truly loves point and click adventures, puzzle games, and campy, silly, absurd games that were nothing if not ambitious, then I can't recommend this game enough. I had many, many moments of frustration while playing, but I loved it. (Play with a friend if you can, as it helps mitigate the rage at Stauf's taunts when you lose the minigame/puzzle for the hundredth time.)
Honestly, some parts of the game, like navigation/movement and some of the puzzles, are truly atrocious. You have to remember, though, that this was one of the first computer games [i] ever, [/i] and they simply didn't know what kind of puzzles would and wouldn't work, or have the knowledge and storage space to improve the pathing. I highly recommend this game, but only if you're the right kind of person for it.
For a very old game, it still holds sway in my nostalgia. I enjoyed it way back on my win 95 machine and now today. Still a classic, though without a little help, 2 of the puzzles are nearly impossible. If you can stand the low res images and the slightly janky controls, its a good game for a quick play. But for now, I will enjoy playing the VR version more.

Having played this when it first released, it will always hold-up for me. The puzzles are certainly just as difficult as I remember, though the writing and the acting is more campy than my nostalgia recalls - the novel is a great read for those who want a more thrilling and detailed lore.
If you didn't grow-up playing games from this era you may not appreciate what a feat The 7th Guest truly was, but those who did - especially those who love all things spooky, will revisit it fondly.
I was also pleasantly surprised to learn Trilobyte was based out of Southern Oregon, which makes me feel even more connected to The 7th Guest.

* Camera constantly staggers about like a drunk flamingo wearing spring-bottomed stilts
* Twaddle storyline
* Terrible midi music, which is sometimes louder than the speech and with volume which can't be adjusted separate from speech.
* The most bollocks ending I've possibly ever seen in a computer game.
Conclusion:
Holy wow, this game sucks so badly. I am actually impressed by how badly designed most of the puzzles are, how on earth is this considered a classic or in any way good? Definitely don't play this, not even if you think it will be fun and nostalgic. Unless you're a complete masochist, in which case have at it. :-D lol!!

One of my favorite games from the 90's. It's still a solid puzzle game with a quality story and great setting. The game play is a bit slow but holds up good story bad voice acting. For a game this old its solid but sure shows its age.

To be honest, like all these games it is rather dated but it was a wonderful return to my childhood and I suspect for anyone like me from the 90's you will get a warm fuzzy feeling of remembrance when you play it.
I will warn you all however that some of the puzzles are bit soul destroying and on modern PCs there is one which I think maybe impossible to complete without using the skip option the game provides.

Maybe this game was groundbreaking technology-wise at the time, but I shudder to imagine people enjoying this in any era.
It is far too slow-paced, lots of traps that send you back for no reason, rewatchable cutscenes that can't be skipped, and some of these puzzles! One puzzle is so complicated, that there are ARTICLES detailing its AI, and how no AI made can help you beat it. Another puzzle takes NINE minutes to solve WITH a video guide, not because it's overly hard or complex, but because every move you make is accompanied by an 8-second animation that can't be skipped. That, and every 10-15 turns, the characters will talk, and you can't act until they're done.
And don't even get me started on the nonsensical plot.
Best I can say about this game is that SOME of the puzzles actually are really good and fun. But only some of them. Not enough to be even remotely worth all the other headaches.

I had an AMAZING time exploring this house of madness and uncovering what twisted things happened here. The puzzles are just GENIUS, I felt really smart solving them. The FMV scenes are DELICIOUS. One hell of a memorable ride for an adventure!

Played in the latest ScummVM with James Woodcock's remastered soundtrack. If you're coming back to this game or starting it for the first time I think these two things are a must to bring it up to date as possible. The slow movement around the house and lack of direction was rather annoying but the amount of detail in the environment is really fleshed out so I can't fault it too much. The puzzles lean more toward the annoying and tedious side than the fun to solve side, but some of them are indeed good. From what I've seen the puzzles that infuriated me the most have been nixed from the IOS version so I might recommend that port over the pc version. It lends itself much better to the pick up and play style especially when you're doing a lot of wandering to try to figure out where the next puzzle is located. I think this is the main downfall of the game. By the time I've found the next puzzle I've already forgotten where in the rather weak story I'm at. All those puzzles for such an unfulfilling ending. Cutscenes were my favorite part of the game regardless. I liked seeing the vfx of old and bad acting. Pick it up if you want to see an old inspirational puzzle game, but otherwise it's an easy skip.

For a CD-ROM based game when it was lauched, it has very good graphics (the actual game, not the FMVs). it is outdated nowadays, but still has very good puzzles. some are simple, some are clever and some are impossible (looking at you microscope puzzle). it is a slow paced game, since every movement around the house is followed by a FMV sequence, so not recommended for people who skip videos in other games.

It makes sense that the 7th Guest was pulled from Steam since it doesn't play well on modern computers. I've heard some mixed things about the anniversary edition as well, but I couldn't recommend trying this even from a non-technical standpoint. I suppose some of the cutscenes might be worth looking at online, but you'd be better off looking up better "so bad they're good" games instead.
Genuinely one of the worst games I've ever played. The puzzles are not satisfying, it lacks cohesive story telling, and the story itself is just disjointed and badly written. The acting is diabolical and everything is just deeply unsatisfying.
i've loved this game since it came out. Some puzzles are different everytime, very difficult parts such as the maze and the coffin puzzle can get a little frustrating, but all in all a fun challenge for all ages.
It's not a bad game, it is just really, really difficult. There's one puzzle, the bishop's puzzle, where you need to swap the positions of bishops on a chess board without allowing them in a position where one piece could take another. I think the solution requires somewhere around 30 moves, and I have not found any guide which gives hints on the strategy of how to figure it out, only the solution, which is highly non-intuitive. I suspect even master chess players would not find this puzzle easy, so where does that leave the rest of us?
I have also heard, though haven't tried it, that the microscope uses an AI program whose difficulty scales with your CPU power. There's a web site with a JavaScript program where you can enter the AI's move and it will let you know what your next move should be. That does not sound like fun.
When a game's difficulty requires you to use a walk-through, you might as well save your money and watch a video of it.
Also, all cut scenes are unskipable. After seeing them over and over again, you'll wish they were.
Old but still current, I played the original in the early 90's
I'm not thumbing down the game because it's 'bad'. I feel that this type of game won't appeal to non-fans of point n click adventure games. My other reason is because of the game itself and how it's designed and the fact that I feel most would resort to a guide to certain puzzles which defeats the purpose of 'solving puzzles'.
The game's story is about you visiting this house, getting trapped and having to find out the history behind it before being freed. Story is basic and told through the ghost images of people in the past through FMV which is alright. If you're looking for a plot, I consider it pretty weak BUT interesting enough to see where it goes.
The gameplay is mostly about solving the puzzles much like more games of this genre. The puzzles range from simple enough to head scratching to hot garbage puzzles that either don't explain themselves well enough(like the church puzzle) or just garbage (like the infamous soup can puzzle or the microscope 'puzzle'). The game tries to help out with a hint book and it does help but not everyone will understand it. I enjoyed solving most of the good puzzles but they range from being ok to stupid.
The other aspect I don't enjoy is not knowing where I can go. If you play the more recent versions of this(the tablet version) you will not encounter this problem as there are arrows telling you what and where you can interact. I missed a puzzle in the main hall because I didn't know I could look at the floor it's garbage.
There is a major flaw in this version of the game at the time I was playing. The microscope puzzle is jacked up. The AI in the game was set to a speed so fast in error that it reads your moves making the most optimal move against that it is a nightmare to beat it. It's possible to beat humanly as I have managed to after 3 hours of trying. But originally it's not suppose to be that killer.
I know this game is considered a classic but it's just ok. Not something that you're really missing out on hence my not recommended.

It's a classic, but it's also everything I disliked about adventure games before Myst. The puzzles have no reason to be there and they are not tied to the environment or story. The logical ones are okay (The Bishop puzzle is frustrating but perfectly logical thus very satisfying to solve) but there are too many illogical ones.
The tin can puzzle, and the block puzzle. As far as I can tell there is no logical way to deduce the solutions to these.

What? Where in the game does it hint this is the solution? What is a TAD and why is that a word here?? That was my breaking moment.
Solving puzzles unlocks doors, but the game doesn't bother to tell you that you need to solve a puzzle to unlock this or that door, and it doesn't tell you the door is now unlocked after you solve a puzzle. It's random cause and effect.
I respect this game as one of the first of its kind, but I much prefer what Myst did for the genre: tying puzzles to the environment and story instead of unconnected, random nonsense.
(If you do play it through, look up the speedhack to make the transitions faster. Makes the game so much more pleasant.)

Back when our family got a Power Mac in the early 90's, this was one of the first games we got. It was popular enough that my mother (a non gamer) had heard about it from friends at work, and wanted to pick it up. It was one of the first mega hits on CD ROM. Our whole family loved the game, and we played it together, helping each other out with the puzzles. I have to say it hold up pretty well. The puzzles are fun, and the narration and characters are good Halloween time fun. That's basically what the game boils down to, a kid friendly spooky story with live action ghosts narrating a point and click puzzle adventure. If that's what you are looking for, this game delivers. Don't expect anything too scary like a modern adult horror, this is all done about like a classic ghost story, or family Halloween TV special.
I remember when this game was new. It was one of the very first CD-ROM games and it often was bundeled with the hardware packages that were out on the market during that time. It was fantastic back then!
Today, it might seem dated graphicvise, but this game doesn't need anything more than it got to be playable today as it was back then. Personally I find it entertaining and the puzzles are still great. Worth your time, worth your money.

Ho sempre detto che quando un gioco è ormai storia non lo si può "valutare". Specialmente se parliamo di uno dei titoli che insieme a MYST ha avuto un rilievo capitale nella diffusione del CD-ROM e che ha venduto milioni di copie. Ecco la cosa giusta sarebbe paragonarlo al suo cugino temporale MYST.

Migliore nella storia, con la quale Robin e Rand Miller creeranno un vero e proprio universo narrativo che The 7th Guest può solo sognare. Migliore negli enigmi, integrati alla perfezione con l'ambiente circostante e dall'originalità indiscussa (In The 7th Guest si tratta di roba classica come scacchi, giochi coi numeri, tessere o intrugli tipo prato fiorito. Alla lunga ho sentito un po di ripetitività strutturale, e qualcuno senza la lingua italiana è quasi impossibile da risolvere vedi l'enigma delle fottute lattine!). Migliore nel sonoro con lo splendido score di Robin Miller. E migliore soprattutto nella fluidità! Un parimerito lo troviamo nell'aspetto grafico, dove entrambi erano nell'eccellenza. Addirittura in The 7th Guest la massiccia presenza di effetti grafici e animazioni ne sentenziavano dei requisiti minimi INSANI per l'epoca. Entrambi fanno uso dei filmati live action, anche se in MYST vengono meglio utilizzati. Riguardo all'interfaccia The 7th Guest sarebbe anche migliore se solo non fosse per i cursori adottati, che ho trovato personalmente fastidiosi. La presenza di un menù principale rende il tutto più accattivante (In MYST era assente, o meglio era una barra delle opzioni come nei giochi precedenti) ma anche lui è soggetto ad una legnosità bestiale che affligge tutto il gioco. Quest'ultimo aspetto credo sia dovuto alle piattaforme di destinazione, infatti il CD-i di Philips qui si sente di brutto.
In effetti Steam non ci chiede di valutare ma di consigliare, LO CONSIGLIO a chi desidera esplorare un periodo storico dove le avventure grafiche iniziavano a cambiare, quando i fondali prerenderizzati incominciavano ad entrare nelle nostre vite di giocatori.

If you are like me, you (or one of your friends) owned this bad boy on a 1x CD rom back in the early 90's. If so, then I think you'll dig the walk back through memory lane. Nothing has changed here and for a few bucks, it was a nice jog down memory lane.
The puzzles are still hard even with 30 more years of additional wisdom under my belt. Maybe some of them had some helpful hints in the manual, but without it you'll be scurrying the internet looking for a guide. Thankfully there are some sites out there that offer hints without spoiling the entire puzzle. Movement is as clunky as ever and the sound design and music is almost laughable. Again, it was a nice jog down memory lane.
If you have never played this, or games like this (wagging my fist at you young whjpper snappers), then I'd probably say you won't like it. There are far better games out there these days with better graphics, puzzle design etc...
Excruciatingly slow.
This game was absolutely groundbreaking when it came out, and while it hasn't managed to maintain that level of awe in the current era, I can see why it would have been at the time.
The Pros:
- A completely immersive pixel environment where every single visible angle of the house is designed, so whenever you click on anything you can see your POV travel around the area. This was absolutely mindblowing for adventure games of the time, which were more in the style of King's Quest, and I understand why it was up there in Myst in redefining what games could do.
- A wide variety in the types of puzzles to solve -- even if one or two were ones you just can't get, others are ones that will be easy for you.
- An interesting (if often nonsensical) and sinister story.
- Atmosphere. The Atmosphere is maintained to the current day.
Cons:
- It's SLOW. Anything you click on will take five seconds or more to complete, which is agony when you are trapped playing the knight puzzle and need to watch each piece ssssllooowly get moved. I assume this is due to how fully things are rendered, but it makes for a not-fun experience a lot of the time. Likewise, the characters often cut in to speak, but you cannot take action while the characters are speaking (again, in the knight puzzle, every time Stauf cuts in to yell DON'T TAKE ALL KNIGHT you are just making it take longer, Stauf!!!)
- There are frequent shortcuts back to the library (where you can get hints) but they don't have a different icon from the rest of the interactables, so often you click something hoping to see a fun animation and then need to spend five minutes slowly navigating your way through the house again. It made me reluctant to poke around and see the fun things the devs put in.
- Some of the puzzles are bad. Some are just agonizing to do (like the piano simon says puzzle) and some are essentially random chance games -- if you're bad at Ataxx, you will never beat the microscope puzzle. Puzzle design is basically that as long as you've figured out what to do you should be able to solve it, so there's no reason to have to slowly simon says a piano one exremely slow note at a time for a minimum of 18 full repetitions, for example. There IS a skip puzzle feature, but it's not advertised anywhere and you have to either google it (in the modern day) or luck into finding it. Maybe it was in the manual originally, I don't know. It's also an extremely time consuming skip puzzle feature to get to and requires a minimum of 3 full attempts at a puzzle you've already decided to skip.
- The story is non-chronological and often contradicts itself (you'll see someone die in a way that makes no sense, if the Young Sexy One is actively hunting the kid down, why would she stop to take a lengthy sexy bath? If one character is shown being killed in a puzzle, how are they in the final scene after all the puzzles are complete)?
Overall I'd say, treat it like a piece of video game history and consciously curb your frustrations when you play. A lot of the quality of life improvements may not have been there due to technical limitations at the time. I cannot imagine playing it again, but I'm glad I experienced it and feel like I understand a bit more about one of the most influential games in our history.

This is a product of its time. Enjoyed most of the puzzles and cheesy FMV. Some of the logic is outdated along with what is considered bad design choices nowadays but didn't keep me from having fun. Worth installing and messing around if you haven't seen it before

While it's not a good game (it may have been in 1993) it's not bad, but if you skip it you're not really missing anything.
Some of the puzzles are brutal. The microscope puzzle for example is a very difficult game against AI. The piano puzzle is a memory game starting with 1 key and going up to 18 keys, meaning you need to click 171 keys, in order, without mistakes. If you're up to 12 keys and you make a mistake, you have to start completely from scratch.
The narration during puzzle solving gets in the way. During the maze, whenever you reach a dead-end, an audio of Stauf mocking you plays, which prevents you from turning around until the audio finishes. The same thing happens during other puzzles where narration plays making you wait before you can make more moves. And the knight puzzle has very long animations for swapping the knights which was particularly annoying.
Reviewing games I played a long, long time ago:
I'm giving a thumbs up mainly because of the game historical relevance, as this was one of the first FMV adventures to use the CD-ROM from the ground up. I played a few years after it was released, and by that time I had already played Gabriel Knight 2 which is the best FMV adventure ever. By comparison The 7th Guest is obviously weaker and more rudimentary.
I found this game to be very enjoyable. The puzzles are challenging, the story kept my attention, and it made me feel nostalgic. Would absolutely recommend to Markiplier
Classic myst-style adventure game. It's a classic for a reason. Though I highly recommend enabling the fast-movie setting in the ScummVM .ini file. Some of the puzzles are maddeningly hard.
Worth it just for the free making-of documentary alone.
Also the 7th Guest ist nicht so ganz mein Fall. Ich kann mir aber vorstellen das es gut bei Leuten ankommt, die es früher mal gespielt haben.
Für mich als Neuling ist es allerdings nichts. Es ist ein Point & Click Horror Adventure. An sich habe ich nichts gegen Point & Click aber man merkt diesem Spiel schon an das es in die Jahre gekommen ist.

Your mileage may vary with this one... you may be more into it if you played it back in the day, as it is a pretty light on content and it shows it's age. If you want a more robust set of puzzles, you are far better served with, say, a Professor Layton game.
But, if your nostalgia for this game or games like it is strong, this is a wonderful title! This was the very first CD-Rom game I ever had, and it was a real eye opener to the other kids in the neighborhood when they came over.
And make sure you have your speakers up when you quit! Stauf has a special greeting for quitters!

Yeah, it was an awesome game in the early nineties and the fancy (at the time) graphics and entertaining FMV made up for the horrible interface and *incredibly slow* movement..but 27 years later, it's just a huge nono..not even for a nostalgia kick.
It's just a frustrating experience, not helped by Nightdive not bothering to update the version of SCUMMVM. Apparently, updating to the latest version of free software is too much and so it gains nothing from the improvements in features.

The 7th Guest foi um dos primeiros jogos a serem vendidos apenas em CD-ROM em uma época dominada por disquetes, servindo como uma espécie de vitrine para como a “nova” tecnologia era capaz de trazer variedade aos jogos, mas acabou conseguindo surpreender até mesmo os seus criadores com um sucesso acima do esperado.
Trata-se de um jogo de puzzles com dificuldade que pode ser considerada padrão atualmente, mas bem fácil para a época, já que os jogos naqueles tempos eram realmente casca grossa. O estranho é que os desafios propostos são quebra-cabeças abstratos que não guardam nenhuma ligação com o contexto geral da trama como se vê nos títulos modernos.
Porém, o jogo claramente não envelheceu bem e nos dias atuais pode chegar a frustrar quem se proponha a jogar, principalmente por causa das diversas cenas pré-gravadas, muitas delas extremamente longas e que não podem ser puladas. Ironicamente, foram estas mesmas cenas as grandes responsáveis pelo sucesso do passado.
O problema é que isso deixa a jogabilidade (que já é bastante arcaica) ainda mais engessada, porque qualquer clique fora da curva executa o script e fará você assistir novamente alguma famigerada cena. Como se trata de um jogo de tentativa e erro, você já pode imaginar o tamanho do estrago.
Assim sendo, podemos considerar que The 7th Guest é um jogo bem desanimador, que pode ter dado o que falar na sua época, mas atualmente provavelmente não conseguirá agradar a quase ninguém. Talvez, caso você já o tenha jogado no passado, possa valer a pena pelo fator nostalgia, mas do contrário eu não recomendaria.
E outra coisa, se você for teimoso como eu e ainda assim resolva querer jogar, a função de Salvamento não está funcionando, então terá que terminar tudo em uma tacada só, porque se você sair do jogo vai perder todo o seu progresso. Boa sorte nesta empreitada. RUIM (4/10).

Trust me, just look this one up on YouTube. Worth watching for the z-grade acting and early 90s FMV crust, but absolute CBT to play. Puzzles with many solutions where only one's been programmed to solve it, random objects scattered around that teleport you across the house for no reason when you click them, and then where I finally drew the line was a Simon-style memory puzzle with a sequence of at least two dozen steps, at which point I noped out and cut the stream. Really would have had more fun watching someone else go through all this. That said, definitely do look up a playthrough, because the cutscenes really are... something.

I played this as a kid and never beat it. It was the first FMV I ever played. It is a good nostalgia game. The puzzles can be tricky as you really get ZERO clues on solving them.
One of the coolest games of all time. The music, atmosphere, story, and puzzles are incredible.
