For a game that cost less than five dollars it delivers a lot. If you want to expand your vocabulary or just enjoy playing word games I cannot recommend this game enough. You wont spend hundreds of hours on this game but the hours I have spent have been extremely enjoyable

We´re dealing with a University Programming Project. It´s a word association game... It´s unique, there is probably no other game like this on Steam .. but it´s really no fun at all.

Впрочем, мой минус будет обоснован тем, что за эту игру зачем-то просят денюжки (хоть и небольшие), притом что полноценной игрой это "чудо" (без негатива!) не назвать.

No. Apparently you can't make a game based on a picture with a lot of words. Maybe someone somewhere made such game, but this is not it.
Was really hopeful for this, but didn't enjoy it at all. Seems rather broken as well, with words just not making sense as to how they link up. The tutorial doesn't help you learn how to play well.
There's also no narration, so I don't know why it says it's narrated by Richard Dawkins.
fun game and concept, however the UI, visual design and controls on desktop are genuinely the worst I've ever come across in my life. Instead of using the arrowkeys to move back and forth from each page, it should've been bound to WASD, with W and S switching between the definition of the target word and the last selected synonym.
An interesting idea, but very roughly executed. The only positive side is Dawkins' voice.
The UI is so bad that I can't even play it. The game has no options menu as far as I can tell. It has no way to save and exit as far as I can tell. The crazy part is "as far as I can tell", there's no way to tell what the commands are except to button mash. It doesn't even respond to the escape button! This game is clearly just an auto-fellatio of it's creators, who clearly thought they had a sudden stroke of genius by getting involved in an art form they very apparently had no business in. At least consider the possibility that your audience might want to be able to view fullscreen!!! For so much brainpower that supposedly went into this project, I see no evidence of it.
I don't know how people disliked it, maybe because it's a new idea. This is a philosophical learning experience in the best enjoyable way.
I like the concept but think the price is... too much for what it is. You literally click on matching synonyms... and thats it. The execution, however, is terrible - obvious synonyms are missing (e.g. none of distort, disfigure, twist, warp or deform are synonyms for gnarl), and sometimes the synonyms don't make any sense (I think conceal was a synonym for concealment?).

This is a minimalist mobile ported word puzzle game based on thesaurus synonyms. You are given a word and you must click on 4 different synonyms until you reach the target word.
The game deceptively credits Richard Dawkins as a narrator, which is essentially fraud as the game features no narration, so right there the developers are going to burn in hell for sheer lack of ethics there. Aside from that, this is a shonky minimalist mobile port, with no fullscreen option and next to no real gameplay at all. You could do the same thing just putting your finger on words in a dictionary, and if you think that's fun, then great, you don't need to buy this game. Also, if you do have a dictionary lying around at home, it has better graphics than this game.
The game also, in a really creepy way, asks for your email address so the developers can stalk you/data harvest and sell your details off. Creepy as. Why did they lie about Richard Dawkins? The whole thing is a confusing mess.
Fun game to start up casually once every few weeks. It makes me feel smart.
Back in its day, [i]Synonymy[/i] was an interesting word game concept with a clunky UI that put form before function.
Today, it is also a game that you can play for a while until it gets stuck trying to submit your new high score to the leaderboard servers that are long gone, at which point you can only force-close the game.
Don't spend your money on this.

Didn't like it.
The gameplay is kinda confusing, and the controls and navigation are hard to use. There was also a daily/weekly/whatever challenge before I even got to the tutorial about how tf to play the game. (Also there's no options to make the game smaller than full screen.)

Je m'amuserai surement autant voir plus en feuilletant un dictionnaire ! Un belle connerie. Et si vous aimez Dawkins, lisez ses bouquins ! Pas la peine de lui lécher le scrotum en défendant ce jeu totalement pourri qui n'est même pas bien adapté pour le PC.
The premise is simple: using synonyms of varying abstraction, navigate from your starting word to the target word. Execution, however can prove to be quite challenging. The difficulty level, completion speed, and number of sysonyms used factor into your score for each round. Scores are submitted to the game's website. The definition of each word is available after being selected and multiple pages of synonyms are available for each word. A mode is available to challenge your friends with rounds you have completed to see how they fare.
The only problem I have had with the game is the native resolution. The game is expecting 1920 x 1080 or higher. The game does load in a window that can be resized which makes it a minor annoyance at the worst.
Very nice game
I like the game. Some say it feels like work, but I like the sense of accomplishment I get from finishing games with short times and high difficulty. Its definitely not for everyone, but I love reading and get the gist of the levels pretty quickly. I can understand the frustration and boredom some may experience, but its a nice time filler when I don't have time to get into another, action packed game.
As you can see, I've almost 70 hours accrued, and very little of that has been afk.

This feels like work. Maybe one of the least fun games I've played. The interface is a very poor port from the smartphone game it started as, which, frankly, isn't very good to begin with (the sound of swiping between pages of synonyms gets grating very quickly, and with no options to turn it off, it really seems almost designed to keep people from playing it). Technical complaints aside, I don't know if this is inherently fun. It feels like a very poorly designed version of Scategories or something.

TLDR: Tabletported experience. No options. Does not fullscreen correctly. Bland uninspired backdrops with .ttf arial writing overlaid on top. Swype is now arrow keys + mouse. Synonym gimmick feels poorly executed and plays like a trial error game of telephone.
The game revolves around being given a word, and then clicking on an associated word, reffered to in this game as a synonym, and repeat the process until you reach your goal word, which is usually more of an antonym. The synonyms are actually vaguely correlated words, as if a text parser analyzed the multiple definitions of each word and somehow matched them by assigning them with an arbitrary correlation value. The result is very arbitrary feeling, mechanical, and unintuitive. I had the word assault not correlate with the word arrest, which was my goal word, but correlated instead with the word snipe. Thats just one example from my five minutes of playtime. But really this does really feel like being trapped in a bad interface clicking on a bunch of hypertext links until google sends you to the correct homepage type of gameplay. The only sound design is a piano note being played to reflect if you are getting colder or warmer to your goal based on how you are navigating the arbitrary correlation map. It is not helpful and it does not brighten the audiovisual experience either making it pretty moot. I would say to avoid this title
Synonymy is a different kind of puzzle game. It has a simple way of scoring you, based on your path through words and if you reach your target word. It could sometimes stand to be a little less vague on how scoring works, but if you're doing poorly or great you'll know soon enough. English or lit majors might like this.
It doesn't go for platforms or mazes or simple shape rearrangement, but rather finding a path through different words to get to a target one. A little confusing at first, but the clues such as sound and a way to go back to previous words is good for one to get a decent score. A way to 'mark' words that you've already tried would be a good system so you won't have to backtrack and keep guessing through a sea of words. Good for the cost if you're tired of the dozens of other tan gram puzzles on Steam.
'S a fair word puzzle, for linguaphile nurds. Presentation is minimalist, yet exemplary.

Perhaps the piano player isn't drunk, they're just trying to mess with you and 2nd guess your logic.

Synonymy - игра, состоящая из слов на английском. Наша задача состоит в том, что мы должны найти синоним к заданному слову, а потом синоним к выбранному, и так далее.

Дано слово, и куча слов, которые могут быть его синонимами. Тыкаем на слово, оно становится исходным, а остальные слова обновляются. Вот только я не понял, почему ничего не происходит, когда я на слово "REPAIR" - чинить, нажимаю слово "FEE" - плата. Они также заменяются, нет ни проигрыша, ничего нет.

To call Synonymy a puzzle would be a synonym again. But yeah, it is a puzzle. Streamlined for tablets this game has some things to offer which make it a casual game. I am playing it now and then and I like to have it im my collection.
Don't expect fancy graphics, a well built story or suspense though, because you are playing around with words - reaching from one to another one in a number of steps. This game knows no lose or win, it just tries to show you how well versed you are in english... actually I would love language packs - but this will be a hell of work to do.
The game is a good form of memory training by the way and if you like simplicistic but very fast gameplay, this might be a puzzle game for you. Even if you will be missing fancy graphics, or an outrageously beautyful soundtrack or some style of suspense. Just give it a try, it won't hurt you.

What I like about this game? Well, first and formost it very simple and easy approach.
This game should have stayed on mobile. While it is fun for short bursts, there isn't much to it and it get's boring fast.
This is a real word trip of a game. Absolutely fantastic.
Great props to the devs for a beautiful style and all the definitions.

Synonymy is about creating a chain of synonyms in order to link your starting word with a goal word. This original idea had so much potential to become a fun word game, but instead is just a tedious exercise of clicking. At least with some sort of graphic to show progression or a story of some kind would have made this so much better. As it is, Synonymy is the only game of its kind so its uniqueness may appeal to some.

I really wanted to like this game, but I just found it kind of boring. I enjoy word games and this was on my wish list for some time as a result.
I bought it on sale, and just didn't get my money's worth. I haven't played it long, and that is kind of my point. Just wasn't enough to keep my interest.

The game has potential to be a relaxing timepasser, but the developer fell short. I'd reconsider this game if the soundtrack was addressed, and if Richard Dawkins actually makes it into the game.
This game is interesting! I love the concept of taking two totally unrelated words and connecting them through synonyms. Unfortunately, that idea isn't executed as thoroughly as it could (and maybe should) be. What I mean is when you're choosing synonyms, you only have a handful of choices, rather than the entire gamut of synonyms for a particular word. I can only think this was done to make the game simpler, but why would a game dev ever think that'd be a good idea? Laziness? Pretension? Who knows!
This game is already niche, so cater to it & make it complex! ALAS!

Synonymy is an interesting thought experiment in game form. However, I found that it gets old quickly and the enjoyment fades in about an hour. 3.0 is a major improvement, though, and it's good to see that progress has been made. I didn't run into any glitches this time around and the game was much more achievable.
Still, Richard Dawkins actually does not narrate the whole game, just the tutorial. I'm convinced that this game is polarizing -- either you really like the concept and can play it forever, or play one or two rounds and are done with it. In my opinion, most people are probably in the second camp.
Synonymy is a game where you are given a starting word and you have to travel trough synonyms of synonyms trying to reach the goal word that you are also given at the start.
The game has a difficulty selection, making it enjoyable to people of all ages. The easiest difficulty usually gives you very common words, where the paths are more obvious. But on the hardest difficulty, the words start to be a little more complex, not so common, making it challenging for older people. Since you can see the definition of every single word it's a very educational game - even for adults - you may learn a word or two that you didn't know before, specially on the harder difficulty settings.
You probably won't play this game for hours and hours in a row but rather on short bursts of time several times.
The game also features "seeds" (or pass-codes), a 5 character code that you and your friends can enter on the beginning of the game to ensure you have the same starting word and goal. That way you can compare your scores at the end.
There's also a global leaderboard, where you can see the the score, starting and goal words of the most recently played games around the world, along with its pass-code in case you want to try the same challenge by yourself.
I absolutely recommend it. It is very cheap too. Get it.
Synonym is a game in which you attempt to use multiple definitions of words to move from synonym to synonym to link two words which are disparate in their general meanings. It is an interesting concept, and can be neat to explore the word-map, but ultimately there's not much to the game - each pair is self-contained and there is no progression from challenge to challenge, so once you've gone through a single time there's not much variety (beyond the definitions in question, of course).
To someone who greatly enjoys words and reading, this might scratch an itch. But it's a very niche game without much in the way of replayability, so it is difficult to recommend to the general consumer.
Firstly, this is a mobile port to PC/Mac, so the controls are very basic keyboard & mouse click. I experienced some overlay issues within the game when I was reviewing the tutorial and wanted to interrupt it to go back to the main menu. There's no intuitive "esc" to main menu, or anything similar. This is a straight up port, so you have to "swipe" back to menus through the arrow or AWSD keys.
The gameplay itself is quite simple to pick up: you start with a word, given the definitions, and set off with a completely unrelated word to find your way through synonym choices to get to your target word. Remember those "change one letter at a time to get from "Bear" to "Cake" type word puzzles?" This is exactly the same only with synonyms. If you click on a middle word, you are given the definition, and just randomly clicking on words may increase your vocabulary but it won't necessarily get you to your target word. With weekly challenges, and an ability to give a fellow player a code to try and compete against one another, Synonymy is a nice change of pace to other word games.
Gameplay isn't complicated (outside of the word-linking; puzzle-solving) but your mileage may vary with the controls. It is, after all a straight from mobile port, so you may find you prefer that interface than your PC/Mac.
As of this review, the Steam Overlay doesn't work with the game, so you can't screenshot, etc.
The game does however feature a set of 5/5 trading cards (this isn't yet referenced in the Store Page).
Also of note, is this is listed as a "non-profit" game. Proceeds from this game go to Richard Dawkins charities which are listed on the game's actual website (store page has a link) and worth a look if this sort of information is important to you.
I recommend this game purely based on its educational value and change of pace gameplay. There is some longevity to it, depending on how much you like to play with words :)

This "game" is just too weird for me...
It's fun to play when you want to give your brain a jog. You match synonyms starting with a random word trying to get to a different random word. Although it really should be updated and have a few more words, for the most part it's got the basic synonyms already there. The interface is a bit clunky, but not bad. The sounds are fitting for the game and blend well. Overall, give it a shot if you think it's worth a few bucks.

And there you have it : this game is not about knowing your english, it's about guessing what words are linked with what other words in the game's database. And without knowing what dictionary it was built onto, there's NO WAY you could play this game properly.
This is more a data mesh exploration game than a word game. Therefore it is pretty bad. I know it's cheap, but that doesn't make it any better
I find Synonymy to be a refreshing take on the typical word game. This game actually requires you to flex your understanding of our language rather than being fimilar with words. My only issue with this game is that it isn't availible for windows phone's (WP).
Very odd, simple and frustrating game. I can definitely see why people would review this negatively, as I'm rather neutral about it. Except it's an odd word-puzzle game, and I usually hate puzzle games, that provides a lot more thought in cognitive thinking than I thought.

The presentation is pretty good, but not set up for PC resolutions. However, the gameplay falls short. Maybe this has to do with the fact that everyone's network of synonyms is too different. And, if there are too may missing or dissimilar connections between points in the network, you can only get there by trial and error. And it's not fun randomly guessing for me.

The window popped up mostly off the screen, and it was too large for my 1080p display. I went to try to find the settings for this but there don't seem to be any. Clicking around left me very frustrated as there's a long & terribly annoying noise that plays every time you click something. The UI metaphors are completely nonstandard and both confusing and clunky.
I finally figured out that the only option is to play in a window that you have manually resized so that the content area of the window has exactly the right aspect ratio. I don't think these issues are because of bugs: it's just because they weren't trying and/or have no clue about modern UI conventions.
So I'm taking the rather extreme position that this isn't worth trying just because the interface and rendering engine is so terrible. It really should have just been a browser application: there's nothing here that requires a native application: running this in a browser would have made it work *much* better.

Great game to expand your knowledge of English vocabulary. You should definitely buy it on a mobile platform though. Kind of pointless to sit in front of a computer and play a game like this unless you are a slacker trapped in an office.

This game benefits by making one's vocabulary larger that is especially helpful for me who isn't a native speaker. Its gimmick is interactivity: all these leaderboards, championships, retweets etc. look like they're a natural and logic-based part of the game, not just an attempt to follow today's social network craze. Indeed, it is a good reason to communicate through learning and playing, and I'd like to see this game translated in other languages, as it's planned, to make its educational value even bigger, going beyond the English-speaking world. The bad is, that the game is obviously made for mobile devices in the first place, so this PC port isn't as great as we'd like to see it. Still, this game, even as it is, is definitely worth trying.
As an idea, it's brilliant. I love words and I like connecting the chain from one to another.
As a game, it's not so great. Some obvious synonyms are missing, some connections are made that I don't think work ... essentially, skill is eliminated.
Buy this to explore words and you should get some enjoyment out of it; however, I have a feeling most people, looking for a game, would simply be disappointed.

Accepts "cool" and "big" as synonyms for "late" but not "deny" as a synonym for "omit". Overpriced at 2 bucks.
Just clicking on words to get to another word. Not worth the £1.43 I wasted on it.
Supprisingly delightful. If you're a fan of word-based puzzle games, especially old fashioned ones (lookn at you crossword people, you bogglers and scrabblers of words) you will likely enjoy this game. For the price, not much of question even if your not a huge fan; even going a few rounds will get your money's worth.
Here's the main problem: There's absolutely no reason to get this game on Steam rather then it's mobile port. No upgrades versus resolution or added features.
While the word games you can find online are reasonable, this one does stand out, I just can't honestly recommend it for Steam. But the gameplay makes you think, and is a change up of some concepts.

Inexpensive and a good mental exercise for wordsmiths or aspiring wordsmiths who know exactly what they're getting into. Try to find a chain of synonyms that connect two dissimilar words.
Negatives/Gripes:
It's come to my attention that any profit goes to a specific charity you may not want to support. Given how less than forthcoming the store page is with this information, that's incredibly bad. For this reason and this reason alone I cannot in good conscious give this game any favorable recommendation.
This is a game you can play by yourself if you have a thesaurus and the will to challenge yourself or someone else to chain together any two words of your choice. Why does this need to be electronic, other than the fact that most people don't own a thesaurus? Give us something, developer. (I am aware of the scores, challenges, etc? - but I do not acknowledge these as things of value to most people)
Store page claims "narrated" by some guy. That might apply to the TRAILER, but I have yet to hear one word of narration in game.
Launches in a window as large as my screen, but off-center such that I can't see everything. Can maximize the window but the bottom is still behind the taskbar unless I change my taskbar settings for this one game. No options to my knowledge for changing screen size to something more convenient - not even true full screen.
Something unpleasant happend the first time I tried to open the menus - the instruction text remained, as if on a bottom layer, and every menu text in historical order layered on top, AFTER I had resumed the game. The result was an impossible-to-read/play eye-sore. Closed the game and had to restart (avoiding menus from now on after I start a game).
Seems primarily designed for touch devices and is minimalistic in many ways. Lack of controls and conveniences that should be simple enough for a mouse/keyboard make for an unneccessarily punishing, redundant, and not-very "educational" experience. Sure, you can see definitions for the word that is your final objective before you start, but that's it. I didn't see much opportunity to learn anything in this game. It's no more educational than any dictionary.
Example of what I mean:
When you pick a synonym, the previous word is usually listed on the first page. Instead of being able to "undo" a word and try a different synonym, the game just keeps adding your choices together. So when you finally complete the "word chain" you can end up with the exact same word appearing several times. For a game that automatically posts every word chain completed to the web, I would have thought it respectful to anyone following those posts if the game bothered to post only the most direct path - NOT every single redundant instance of someone fumbling around in search of the end.
Synonymy is a game where you are given a starting word and you have to travel trough synonyms of synonyms trying to reach the goal word that you are also given at the start.
The game has a difficulty selection, making it enjoyable to people of all ages. The easiest difficulty usually gives you very common words, where the paths are more obvious. But on the hardest difficulty, the words start to be a little more complex, not so common, making it challenging for older people. Since you can see the definition of every single word it's a very educational game - even for adults - you may learn a word or two that you didn't know before, specially on the harder difficulty settings.
You probably won't play this game for hours and hours in a row but rather on short bursts of time several times.
The game also features "seeds" (or pass-codes), a 5 character code that you and your friends can enter on the beginning of the game to ensure you have the same starting word and goal. That way you can compare your scores at the end.
There's also a global leaderboard, where you can see the the score, starting and goal words of the most recently played games around the world, along with its pass-code in case you want to try the same challenge by yourself.
I absolutely recommend it. It is very cheap too. Get it.
This game brings up the concept of say, 7 steps to kevin bacon and the wiki walk. The goal is simple, get from one word to another. But you'll find it quite a mental challenge. Really fun to play as well.
