Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a legendary rouge-like game with some strategy, crafting, and RPG elements mixed in. The number of floors to be explored exceed 50, with each floor randomly generated with each playthrough, leaving an infinite amount of variety. The ability to brave the pit with different characters adds to the additional strategies it takes to get to the bottom of the pit. This is a great game for streaming as well due to the variety. I definitely recommend this game for the value.
Absolute classic roguelike, highly reccomended.
The game was excellent before the mandatory additions. The original release left you feeling like the next room might hold what you needed in order to progress. The meta-progression system allowed you to compliment your arsenal with crafted tools and equipment. The additions, however, cluttered the game with so many resources that you never find what you need to craft the most simple things, many of which are now race-specific. There are only so many containers to loot in the game, and what you find is heavily rng-determined. In the vanilla version of the game, there was a good variety of crafting items to find and with a little luck you could piece a few items together. The expansion added 3x times the amount of possible drops, leaving you with an inventory full of junk.

125 hours played and despite that, I'm not sure it's "good". It's compelling! And interesting! And frustrating! And kinda janky! But in that "charming euro-jank" sort of way! Does that make it good? Probably for some people, including myself.
It's a nice game. But...
Too damn slow.
By the time i've played for 1-1.5h i'm praying for death. I'm not bored, it's just such a hard slog. Wish it had savescumming, it would be more fun to explore and play.
There's one save and when the run ends, it ends. After getting killed by something, i've made almost no progress.

The style is nice, music and sound are good. Expanding the SOTSverse is pretty cool.
Devs made an effort to shorten each run time and help the pace along. But it's paradoxical that in order to make a game more fun, there should be less game to play.
Gameplay IS good, but it is too damn slow. Progress is too slow. Even movement is too slow. (Compare Jupiter Hell which flies despite also being simultaneous turn-based)
I would like to like it.

(300+ hours on alt account) definitely a gamer game: primarily skill based plus rng drives the uniqueness in the runs, tons of nuanced hidden mechanics, and runs are grindy and complete runs can take 10-30+ hours depending upon difficulty. crazy amount of content with all the dlc included in the base game now and it goes on sale often. get to know the game for a dozen or so hours first and then get the quality of life mod to unlock all recipes and improve inventory management. W game

Plays like a fart from previous era of gaming. Walk around with selected character, click on things. Level up dozens of stats which are hard to tell what exactly do. Pretty much roguelike with RPG elements. Pick locks, going deeper and deeper into the dungeon and fight stronger enemies. When you die, start over from beginning. After playing for some time suddenly you realize the game is pointless and face palm forehead leaving red mark behind.

Great game...so much variety, many weapons and skills and ways to handle threats. Really a well thought through, complex old school rpg roguelike. Highly recommended

way too hard, tried at least 100 times on Marine normal, abusing blue room mechanics, my best shot only get to floor 40 once which i am lucky to have enough ammo and encounter multiple wormhole on that run, still cannot beat the boss (if you do not know the boss property in advance)
ps i have played darkest dungeon 1&2, slay the spire, into the breach, the difficulty in this game is "next level"
C'est un bon petit jeu ! roguelike SF, tour-par-tour (comme Stoneshard), qui propose de nombreuses options : classes variées, avec gros tableau de stats/compétences, du craft, un inventaire fourni, un bestiaire correct, le tout plongé dans une difficulté bien corsée.
Alors on tombe, puis on recommence.
Le principe est d'avancer dans un complexe scientifique pour y trouver le remède au mal qui a annihilé l'humanité, rien que ça.
Manette ou clavier/souris, les deux se jouent très bien.
C'est très immersif, malgré des graphismes très indé et petit-budget.
La musique est mémorable, les bruitages vraiment croustillants.
Les DLCs allongent la durée de vie : pour moi c'est un jeu occasionnel; on y revient de temps en temps.
Son seul défaut : pas vraiment adapté aux résolutions au dessus de 1920x1080, les textes sont trop petits en 2560x1440, alors je n'imagine même pas le 4K.
Le jeu mériterait clairement un remake avec plus de moyens, adapté aux résolutions supérieures. Hélas il n'en est rien : le 2 est décevant et le dernier message des devs remonte à 2022.

遊戲內有很多種道具和合成裝備 不過裝備有耐久度
而且撿裝本身很吃運氣 有沒有撿到合成素材幾乎會完全影響這一輪的命運
駭進機器、開寶箱鎖、強化裝備、開槍命中和躲避之類的成功率都要看你點的能力
要玩過幾次會比較懂點啥比較有利就是
我看別人玩才發現1F裝備脫一脫空手打會比較不浪費...

TL:DR; Has all the ingredients to make a good sci-fi roguelike, assembles them into a miserable, frustrating, grinding package.
The game starts out very promising. a LOT of options to make your custom little dude to tackle the challenge ahead, then plenty of moment to moment decisions to keep you engaged and experimenting, and then... The grind.
Its a grind more in the sense it wears you down versus being a time sink, but it doesn't respect your time either. The difficulty is always a little too overtuned, feeling spiteful rather than challenging. Every single un-optimised action is another step in the deathmarch that is the gameplay. Eventually you come to grips with the mechanics, get used to the traps and rhythm of gameplay and combat, and then realise the only thing between you and victory is random chance drops of items and then you put the game down and never touch it again.
I like challenging games. I didn't like this one because it was always a little too invested in beating the player, forcing you to play perfectly (with luck) or fail, and mistaking this for difficulty.
It is a roguelike, I get it. I am supposed to die, which counts as part of the learning experience, I get that too.
What I don't get is where my motivation is supposed to come from when all the game is doing is to punish the player, mainly with useless loot. I've had countless runs without finding any ammo. I've had countless runs without finding any food.
I understand that in a game like this there will be shortages the player needs to deal with and to overcome with careful resource management and ingenuity. But how does one manage resources if there are none? The game really is entertaining for some time and does a lot of things right. But when the games RNG is that flawed and the game is letting you die over and over simply by letting you starve to death time and again, then starting over becomes a chore and finally a frustration.
I can see why people like this game, but do yourself a favour and watch a couple of gameplay videos before you decide to buy.

This is a decent rougelike that is fun for a quick game or two. It lacks enough depth to keep my attention but isn't a bad game.
A legitimately good sci-fi roguelike. Takes a while before you can meaningfully interact with the crafting system, but I very much appreciate the resource-management the game is built around. RNG is omnipresent, but so spread out that it doesn't end up feeling like the RNG is to blame for your failure most of the time.
Plus, it comes at a bargain price. What's not to like?
I don't usually play roguelikes but this is excellent, with a great soundtrack. their dlc policy is awful, some of it could've just been a patch, but even the base game offers a ton of content, different classes, items and recipes. now it's bundled with both expansions for 10 bucks, another 4 gets the 4 missing classes.
naturally, it saves when you quit, but you can decide to make shorter work of your ascent by only doing every 5th floor, etc. weapon degradation, ammo and food are out to get you, and with more and more ingredients and recipes added over time, you're always managing inventory, but if you're not prepared for rng to screw you over (and over and over), why are you playing roguelikes? (and that's why I normally don't.) and of course if you find all the things overwhelming, don't install the dlc and play the less intimidating vanilla(ish) experience.
so I obviously played on easy, and to my surprise, managed to reach the end (floor 30 at the time, before all the dlc started flooding in), then went back a few years later to fool around with different classes a bit and check out all the new stuff, something I don't normally do either. sadly, hacked computer logs are limited to the first 50 on easy, so can't get a full collection of lore without increasing difficulty, but recipes and encyclopedia entries are retained between runs.
definitely try the demo to get a taste, worked for me. infinity a few years later went 1st-person shooter, no thanks, the proper(?) sequel went back to its roots but added unnecessary and damn ugly 3d and it's been in early access for years, untouched for a while, also no thanks.

I cannot in good faith recommend this game. I've played it off and on for years. I want to like it, but there is so much wrong with this game. Each run takes hours, and can end at a moments notice because a new enemy attacked you and it turns out that enemy does enough poison damage to kill your character on full health. The only thing you gain after losing a run after 6 hours is the knowledge not to let that enemy hit you again. Investing so much time into a run and not come out of it with any tangible gain isn't fun, it feels like a waste of time.

for me this game breaks the top 50 games I ever played, true classic. Really love ALL the DLC, so much variety in how each character makes the game feel completely different. So much to unlock, replay value seems almost endless.
I don't have the energy to make an exhaustive review, so you'll have to deal with my very condensed, tl;dr-ish review.
This has all the hallmarks of a great roguelike/roguelite, the mechanics of a fun game with progression and somewhat compelling mechanics. But it is FAR too geared towards a "forevergame" design. The game is designed as if this is the only game you will ever play for the rest of eternity. Everything takes [b]for-ever[/b].
It's also highly reliant on trial and error, throws a million and a half ingredients at you that, at the time of starting to play this, you have literally no idea what to do with, much less which machine you use them in.
Add to this that the ingredients are completely consumed whether you make a correct recipe or not, which means you have try, try, try, try and try again with different varieties of ingredients. This is very analogous to Rogue, the original game, but the difference is that Rogue had an extremely low variety. You COULD feasibly figure things out each run. The Pit is completely impossible with the bajillion recipes.
On top of this, there are SO MANY enemies. While most of them are individually not very dangerous, the sheer number of them just means you get destroyed by sheer attrition. Either you run out of ammo or your armor and weapons break (why is durability STILL a thing in games? It was never a good, fun or compelling mechanic. STOP DOING IT!)
It also absolutely loves throwing a whole room full of enemies at youevery time you step down a ladder to the next level, which means you take a whole lot of unavoidable damage. It lacks a decent cover system, which means you'll be relying a lot on armor (which breaks).
With a few DLCs, there's so many new items added, yet your inventory stayed the same size, so you'll be carrying around half a planet's worth of items that you have no idea what to do with.
All in all, this is a frustrating, grindy, annoying experience that can only be enjoyed by someone who will devote hundreds of hundreds of hours to playing one run after the other and doesn't mind that their first 500 runs will be pure confusion, frustration and death.
If you're one of those guys, go for it! Everything else about the game is actually really good. But the inventory and grind is what kills the enjoyment for me. Just get Jupiter Hell, it's a MUCH, MUCH better roguelike.

This game is actually really fun and deep, so many hidden mechanics, at first you are dumb as a space mule but you will learn little by little. Great game but not for a weak mind.

I have been playing this game on and off for a decade. My playtime is probably over 3000 hours due to playing a lot on different platforms and i have beaten it on hard with every class so i cant recommend it enough.
The game has a reputation of being extremely hard and unfair to new players although most true roguelikes have entry barrier of just learning mechanics and getting better.
Everything in pit is tied to skill checks so luck is a factor but that can be mitigated with experience.
Relative scarcity of resources is what separates this from many other roguelikes. Your equipment breaks,you may run out of food or ammo,
There is ridiculous amount of crafting components to find and limited inventory space.
Every enemy has its own shtick doing different kinds of damage or status effects so knowing them makes all the difference.
Visuals and UI,graphics quality are on extremely high level for a traditional roguelike.
Only real con i would say is length of the pit,40 levels is too much and it overstays its welcome in later stages of the game.It should have been 25 and it would still take a lot of time to reach although there are mechanics to skip levels (wormhole traps).
There is a sequel on steam but it seems it is not being developed anymore so stay out of that and play this instead.
"Just like Jupiter Hell but more RPG like." A very nice, cute and intensive turn-based sci-fi RPG. Definitely a good buy if you like turn-based adventures and strategy. Extensive character tree and skills plus ability to control team-mates.
NOTE: I'm an average or below-average player, but with scum-saving this game is AWESOME. Also with scum-saving I managed to learn new things and experiment and now I'm running through the levels in rogue style. If you ever find this game too difficult don't be ashamed to scum.

So, I picked Quasimorph a few days ago and thought of this game again for the first time in... several years. At least five, maybe more. I remembered being turned off, and subsequently being averse to games with a similar style of gameplay until now. Of course, this can only mean one thing. Checking back in and seeing why.
Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a... very confused game. It keeps the controls very simple and accessible, but bombards you with knowledge check after knowledge check on top of heavy RNG. For example, it keeps crafting recipes behind computer logs that you have to get with an RNG check, which you then have to [i]decipher with another RNG check[/i], so unless you've been pumping stats into both deciphering and computers, you won't be getting any new recipes. And even then, there's a very good chance that you'll only be partially successful and only reveal some words. The computer could also be broken, which means, of course, you need to pass [i][b]yet another RNG check[/b][/i] to repair it. That's three different RNG checks and each of them uses a different skill. But hey, at least you move with WASD, use spacebar to interact, and left click to attack!
The game is just completely full of this stuff. It's insane! You need to know to take off your armor and use your weapons extremely sparingly for the first few floors to not waste their durability, know what enemies are worth using weapons on, know when using an item won't be a waste, know what items to keep on hand for crafting, and still be completely screwed by RNG whether it's because you simply never got what you needed or the stupid crafting stations decided to never spawn. And god help you if you're playing as a class that's not good at interacting with the scenery because the issues will be exponentially worse.
What's more is that you can have a solid run going with lots of ammo, good armor, food for days, decent enough weapons, enough healing to open up a hospital, and then run into an Entropic Wurm. An enemy which is the same speed as you (except for two or three specific classes, whoop-de-doo), can grab you to stop you from moving, has armor piercing melee, and will give you level 9 poisoning if it hits you... so you better have something that either increases your movement speed, cures poisoning, or kills it faster than it can get to you because otherwise your run is just over. Level 9 poisoning keeps dropping your stats until you die, health bar be damned. Same thing happens with disease, but that can actually get worse over time instead of going away unless you have you something cures it, which is another way to die unless you have something to cure it with the bonus of also being RNG dependant.
It's so close to being fun, to being something that could have been so good instead of merely being a strange little oddity that doesn't quite have a grasp on why other games in the genre are fun. I could go into further detail about the mechanics and such, but I doubt you need to hear me talk about how obsessed with RNG Sword of the Stars is any more than I already have to understand why I can't recommend this game to anyone. The game is too much RNG dependent to the point is unwinnable. Too many mechanics that are mostly depend on luck.

Да, и русский перевод там был, хоть и от энтузиастов. Но энтузиасты те были высокого уровня и переводили классику на уровне профессионалов. А сейчас вот такие кривенькие ограниченные инди с довольно скудным игровым процессом и не такой красивой графикой.
Какое-то время заняла беготня по комнатам с этажа на этаж, а потом просто надоело однообразие. Слишком утомительно здесь из комнаты в комнату уничтожать непонятную живность и роботов. Можно сказать, что тут существ как днём на базаре - не протолкнуться. А вдруг пришёл какой-то чужак и начал тут всех крошить.
Так что игра довольно поверхностная и недоработанная, что с игрового пульта, что с клавомыши. Дата выхода ещё в 2013-м, но кривизну уже похоже никто не будет править. Лучше пройти мимо этого проекта и приобрести более адекватные альтернативы, благо недостатка в них нет даже в русском сегменте.
Размер для такой примитивной графически игры какой-то неадекватный - почти 3 гб, когда в такой размер могут поместиться обе части фоллаута.

Fun, but challenging. I never got to the end, but I had fun with the time that I spent on it. Drops are heavily RNG, a lot of times it doesn't work out. Getting useful components for recipes seems oddly difficult.

My experience is:
Very poorly-balanced, "everything and the kitchen sink" kind of roguelike that constantly throws a million different things at you. Seems impossible to progress without checking the wiki for various recepies, a quality I truly dislike in games. Gameplay experience is extremely uneven due to the aforementioned poor balancing. I can't even imagine how much time of your life you would have to invest to make even a little bit of progress in this game.

Back in the day, I had to buy this to acquire another item in a totally different game from the developer.
It was trash 11 years ago, it's still trash today.
I wanted to like this game, but it seems to have revamped itself to where its just not fun anymore. Same music over and over plus basic gameplay makes it not fun. I wont recommend.
Sad to say, dungeons of dredmor completely dwarfs this good game.

6/10. Just tried the first level, and overall it seems like a game with a lot of depth, and can be enjoyable if given enough time to learn everything. It is definitely up my alley in terms of the kinds of games I like, but also the UI and controls are pretty clunky.

Fun for a while, but ultimately I found it somewhat repetitive and boring. I collected loads of junk that I had no idea what to do with (other than experimentally destroy it) and spent upgrade points on a wide range of options that seemed to have little impact on what I was doing. I appreciate the effort put into this game, but the slow pacing and "what am I doing" was not for me.

Half-hearted recommend on this one. If you are looking for more roguelike content, it can deliver that, but if you're new to the genre there are much better titles on offer these days. One turn off is that much like all roguelikes there is a very heavy element of resource conservation going on, chiefly centred on ammunition and with different weapon types requiring different types of ammo, yet there are no readily available means to switch between such resources, so you can very easily find a run locked on the basis of RNGesus screwing you over with the mix of weapons and ammo type drops simply not lining up in the way necessary to make use of the limited resources the game has provided you with.
The second problem is that the resource conservation horizon spans the entire run without milestones. Rather than breaking the run up into little segments or sectors with metaphorical "campfires" where your resources are restocked, encouraging the player to yknow actually use them, the entire run uses the same pool of vanishingly scarce resources. This bundle of mechanics introduces the rather bizarre reality where the game overtly punishes its players for using its own systems too readily. You are strictly better off in the long run utilizing the very least possible of your powerful items and options available at any given time, so when you boil it down the player is nudged in the direction of actually having the least of the fun the game has to offer. It's always better to punch rather than stab, and better to stab than shoot - assuming you don't die - because both durability and ammunition are in such short supply, but is that a good idea? Games aren't a job or scarcity simulator, after all, we're here to have fun.
So really this is one of those games that lands upon an unfortunate reality where the best way to play the game is regrettably distant from the most fun way to play it. Well crafted games actually make great efforts to discourage players from undertaking actions that are technically beneficial but horrendously damaging to the game play experience, understanding the point of a game is to enjoy yourself. This means such things as limiting how much farming is beneficial, offering recharge systems that encourage active use of mechanics that have been charge-limited for game play balance (rather than hoarding), normally having decaying currency and/or escalating prices to encourage shopping (rather than hoarding), and so on, but SOTSTP seems to actively lean into many of these worst tendencies of roguelike gameplay by overtly punishing not hoarding and being extremely miserly with tools. I can at least say there is nothing by way of grinding or regenerating mobs, although there is a strange mechanic where you only get exp for *successful* attempts at certain 1-off actions, manifesting a reality of tiresome optimal strategies like for example of it being best to leave containers so that you can backtrack to them later with a higher skill level and have a better shot at interacting with them successfully. Why not just give the player multiple attempts at interacting with skill checks using an experience timer or something? No idea.
None of these things would be major stumbling blocks to greatness though. What really synergizes with these design hiccups to ruin any possibility this game had at legend is the fact that it also made the decision to both make crafting a thing... and then also put inventory space at a premium and have no recipes known upfront... I can't understand such decisions honestly, like I find it very frustrating when games don't enable the player to actually use the systems they are presented with in a way that is fun! The game does everything it can to encourage hoarding yet it also makes said hoarding a major pain in the ass for the player by assuring much time must be wasted on inventory management juggling and painstakingly incrementally using obscure ingredients, consumables and ammunition around most efficiently, then thanks to the opaque crafting you're not sure if you're throwing out junk or something important. This means you either grind out the recipe knowledge or use a wiki constantly, I suspect most players just did the latter until they'd crafted them all, which raises the question again why even keep them unknown, you lose nothing revealing them to the player upfront in my view. At least reveal the basic stuff.
I believe there was potential for a gem here, but sadly it came out just "OK". I want to at this point really stress that it's not *bad*. I DO still recommend it, I just think the effort that went in here could have yielded an ultimately far more appealing end product with a few basic changes. A few readily available methods for switching between types of ammunition (e.g. using a system where the ammo types are traded at < 1:1 efficiency rather than completely mutually exclusive) and simply having far more of the game's crafting known to the player from the outset would have made a big improvement. I mean AT LEAST tell the player the sundry things like which arbitrary food items can combine; SOME fillings can be put with bread to make a sandwich, but NOT all of them? So now I have to figure out WHICH foods the dev arbitrarily decided are valid sandwich fillings and lose my strictly limited resources which are destroyed not returned upon a craft fail? Oh dear. At a certain point players are just going to be reading a wiki rather than figuring it out for themselves or just not bothering to craft at all and I think that point has been reached here. I suspect the number of people figuring out the crafting on their own initiative here will be very small.
So yeah that's it. It's a good game but sadly not a great game, and that's a bit of a shame because it could have been with just some pretty minor changes I think, just trying a little bit harder to work with players to ensure the design worked with players towards the goal of fun rather than fighting against them presumably in the name of building an experience first and foremost for dedicated fans. Alignment between how to win your game and how to have fun playing it is a nuanced question, granted, I just think many devs nowadays would do well to spend more time thinking about it. You can look at titles like "Rogue Fable", "Golden Krone Hotel" or "Shattered Pixel Dungeon" to see some masterclasses in this balancing act of making sure winning your game and having fun playing it are not diverging objectives.

This game is good, for the price and content, get it.
The original game, before they added Psi, was a blast. It was addictive and satisfying, and I lost sleep staying up late many nights my first month with this game. I've tried to come back and play this game a couple of times since they added Psi, but it's just not much fun for me anymore. The balance feels weird to me, enemies eventually feel like bullet sponges, there are now too many floors to travel through, there are too many different items & craftables, and I feel hedged into using Psi and cheesing equipment + exp to myself via the storage rooms if I want to make a real attempt at winning.
What was once a fantastic game now feels mediocre to me. But YMMV. I miss the relative simplicity and fun of the original game (which I believe only had 3 characters - Scout, Engineer, Marine - and only Easy/Normal/Hard difficulties). If it hadn't changed so much, I would 100% recommend it (and if you can somehow get your hands on the 2013-2014 version before they created DLC, I'd very much recommend you try it!).
With all that said, maybe I'll try this game again in the future. And maybe I'll like it again. If that happens I'll consider changing this to a "Recommended", assuming I remember writing this review.
Instead of addressing the many different fundamental complaints regarding game mechanics, bugs and enjoyment found in both the positive and negative reviews that have been actively mentioned for years on end, the devs have instead decided to virtue signal in their game update posts. That's even worse to me than abandoning the project silently because it shows you want to stir controversy in an attempt to gain traction to sell more copies rather than by doing so through putting actual investment into fixing / improving the game.
You are a game developer. You can talk about other matters once the product you sell is glowing with positive reviews based on the game itself, not because you're openly siding with the socially accepted PoV. Uninstalled, there's no hope for this one.

Piece of random sh*t. No balance. No armor, weapons, ammo or food. 50% of time you staring on wiki website, trying to think what you can craft from your full inventory. Whatever you do with 80%-95% chance is always fail. Unplayable.
The confusingly-titled The Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a ho-hum roguelike that doesn’t need to exist in a marketplace crowded with superior iterations of the formula. Taking control of yet another space marine tasked with exploring yet another derelict sci-fi facility infested by a smattering of rats, bats and killer robots, you’ll try, fail, and try again through brief runs of gathering equipment and levelling up; aiming to increase your capabilities as enemy difficulty scales up.
The best that can be said of The Pit is that it’s functional. It does exactly what you expect, and no more. It’s also ugly, clunky, devoid of narrative and achingly unoriginal. The devs have demonstrated that they can make a roguelike, sure, but haven’t offered a compelling argument for why they should.
Combat and exploration feel fiddly and unrewarding, survival elements are underbaked, and there’s no gameplay hook or worldbuilding intrigue to encourage the player to persevere. There’s nothing in The Pit that hasn’t been done many times, and better, by more accomplished titles. I wouldn’t waste your time or money. For a similar turn-based sci-fi roguelike, but much better-executed, Dungeon of the Endless remains an offbeat classic. Hades swaps out The Pit’s plodding turn-based combat for frantic real-time hack ‘n’ slashing, and adds a staggeringly accomplished multi-threaded narrative. For much greater mechanical complexity, with the possibility of delirious combos, check out Slay the Spire. And for a sumptuous audio-visual feast, married to a flawless and compelling game of spaceship management, FTL is not to be missed.
One of the best turn-based rogue-like dungeon crawlers, While gameplay seems trivial at first, the game is extremely difficulty. It has become somewhat easier since its release, but still remains highly challenging. The game features lots of items, monsters, and interactive objects. There is a meta-progression system, as well as ways to pass equipment to future characters, although mastering these mechanics takes some time to figure out.
[h3]Playing on Steam Deck[/h3]
Standard Proton installation doesn't include the two required libraries: dotnet40 and xna40. I had no luck trying to install them via Winetricks and ended up doing this:
1) Installed SteamTinkerLaunch (there are multiple ways to do it; I used ProtonUp-Qt installed through Discover).
2) Set SteamTinkerLaunch as a compatibility tool for The Pit in Steam.
3) In STL, went to "Download Custom Proton" and installed GE-Proton7-22.
4) Returned to STL's main menu and navigated to "Winetricks." Here, selected the recently installed Proton version and clicked "Select" to choose additional libraries to install: we need dotnet40 and xna40. Then clicked "Install."
5) Went back to STL's main menu, selected "Game Menu." Ensured the newly installed GE Proton was selected.
6) Now you can click "Save and play.". It takes couple of minutes to run the game for the first time.
After that the game is playable in Desktop mode with Keyboard and Mouse using standard controls.
Fun game.

Dungeons of Dredmor in Space: The Game.
Lots of enemy types to kill or get screwed over by, lots of recipes to learn, lots of skills to level, and multiple characters to play that excel in different fields. It's an old game that has its flaws, but it still holds up.
The developers openly support terrorists and war criminals.
To grindy game, it gets tedious to progress very little per playsession.
Well, with only 3 hours in its already sucked me in, which is about as glowing a reccomendation as i can give. There's far too few good Sci-Fi Rogue-lkes out there (not you of course FTL, youy know i love you....;) Its turned based,sci-fi rogue-like dungeon(or pit in this case) crawling goodness. And you can get it off Fanatical for $1 at the moment. Best $1 ive ever spent hands down.

Doesn't even run. Whether or not it will run for you seems like it comes down to luck.
Hitting the Play button will show the pause and stop button for a few seconds, then returns to being the Play button. This means that you can gain playtime from trying to run it.
Edit: After several days, finally managed to get it to work after doing a bunch of things to fix it including repeating a few steps... And honestly after all that effort, not having much fun.
The game's probably fine, but the controls are a mess.
This is a hard game for me to review because my position on whether to recommend it or not is teetering on an edge where I'd either barely recommend it or barely not recommend it. But I also have to try to filter out my bias in both not really liking the setting as a whole, and absolutely hating the developers who have immensely bad attitudes and don't tend to take criticism well.
Trying to ignore that. The game does a few things kind of right. There's technically a lot of mechanics here to fiddle with, including various crafting mechanics, item durability, traps, skill leveling, spells (psychic powers are space spells and the ones in this game are even less plausible than usual), etc. There's also a lot of playable characters, who each have different priorities, mechanics, and equipment limitations. There's a variety of enemy types, a mechanic that lets you start later in a run with gear from previous runs. There's generally a lot of things making for some replay value, which makes this a good game for an obsessive type of roguelike player.
The problems though, kind of outweigh what this game does well. The biggest issue is the way a lot of these mechanics work makes the game super tedious to play. Durability for example makes it so you are often better just unequipping armor and weapons until you need them, and fighting with just your fists whenever you can. This is made most clear when you play the Seeker, who literally needs his armor or a health regen item in order to not slowly die, meaning you need to keep unequipping it, then reequipping it constantly throughout the run since if it breaks, your run is over. This is made worse by the existence of various traps or item activation failures which can include effects that vaporize your items. If you got replacements consistently enough it wouldn't be too bad, but the game's loot pool is very diluted and often characters have restrictions on what they can equip. For the Seeker there is a grand total of 2 armors and 1 other item that prevent him from dying, meaning the game's giant loot pool makes it so you can't escape the tedium of just constantly unequipping and reequipping his armor over and over again in order to avoid breaking it.
There's also other issues. With mechanics not really being expressed to the player. For example there's a hidden mechanic making it so some characters fight stronger enemies and others fight weaker, which is not expressed to the player at all, meaning you'll only notice it if you really pay attention to the types of enemies you face as different classes.
Then there's the issue that quite frankly this game is way too long. Even if you take both options to shorten it, by the time you get to the final floor you'll have long passed a point where the game has long since worn out it's welcome. The final floor is also a giant gauntlet of largely unavoidable fights including vs some very annoying enemy types, as well as a boss and his unique lackeys. Your biggest problem is if all your best gear breaks before you get to him.
There's also some very annoying UI bugs that will probably never get fixed. But the biggest problem is that while all these issues individually aren't deal breakers, what the game has to offer just can't make up for them. I've got a decent playtime here. I might eventually go back to this game for a bit if I ever have another phase where I go back to playing old roguelikes, but to be honest I'll probably go through a bunch of better put together ones like Dungeon of the Endless first. There's stuff to like here, and I can see how it appeals to some people, but it's got enough problems to make it very hard for me to recommend.
And bias filter off, I'm probably never buying anything from this developer again due to their attitude alone, as well as their tendency to leave products in very bad states such as Kaiju-A-Gogo's largely non-functional DLC monster. The only game they've put out that I'd cautiously recommend is the original Sword of the Stars, which itself competes with better games made by developers who don't have a habit of snapping at people on forums.
