日复一日、平淡如水的家务清单，做得久而久之，就莫名其妙会爱上这份工作。一个从未见过面的人，处得久而久之，就会莫名其妙爱上他。也许生活中唯一能长久陪伴主角的，就是自己在玻璃窗中的倒影。想对窗外发生的战乱充耳不闻，但自己总有牵挂不能放下，终究无可避免地卷入了其中、成了历史幕后的见证者和书写者。也许这就是生活的样子；并不美好但久而久之习惯了、也接纳了。无聊乏味也许是一件好事，因为这能让游荡的思绪找个落脚点，去思考、去遐想、去让自己经历过的一点一滴，化为有形的文字和物件。

可惜这一作最大的缺点就是：一周目流程只有两个小时左右、实在太短，在乏味之余，没能很好地凸出那种漫长之感。

In my opinion, what makes this game truly stand out is its minimalist storytelling. I really liked how the story is told only through the environment, the main character’s inner monologues, and short diary entries.

Despite this simplicity, the game manages to deliver a surprisingly engaging story about a revolution in a Latin American country. At the same time, there’s a more personal subplot – the evolving relationship between Angela, a cleaning lady, and Gabriel Ortega, the apartment owner secretly preparing a coup.

I found it fascinating that everything is experienced only through Angela’s eyes, as she cleans Ortega’s apartment – the single location in the whole game.

The game is also full of small, clever details – subtle references to music, literature, and philosophical ideas that add depth to the experience.

Visually, the game is quite weak, but honestly, that doesn’t bother me at all. The real strength lies in its atmosphere, writing, and the quiet power of its storytelling.

Взаємодієте з об'єктами, читаєте записки, іноді самі залишаєте відповіді господарю дому, якого ніколи не побачите за усю гру. За вікном 1970-ті, якась латиноамериканська країна, яку роздирають політичні срачі. Тут добре зроблена атмосфера і відчуття стилю тих часів, що передане через меблі, книги, картини, ті ж записки і платівки. Локація одна і та ж але вона змінюється кожного вечора, коли ви приходите виконувати свої прибиральницькі обов'язки . Загалом тут по сюжету така собі меланхолійна політична і соціальна драма без екшону і якщо вам подобаються неквапливі симулятори бродіння - то це воно.

Attention, cette critique divulgâche de nombreux éléments clés du jeu.

Je me souviens d'une certaine époque, ça date d'il y a environ une quinzaine d'années. À cette époque, j'éprouvais un certain mépris envers les titres de Tale of Tales. Trouvant le concept même de walking simulator ridicule, forcément que je n'allais pas adhérer à un titre nous faisant incarner une vieille femme dans un cimetière afin de la guider vers son banc.
J'ai bien évolué depuis (ce sera toujours ça de pris) et, comble de l'ironie, le genre du walking sim est même devenu l'un de mes préférés.

Et maintenant, autant être clair d'être le départ, j'ai beau ne pas avoir parcouru des dizaines et des dizaines de jeux du genre dans ma vie, je suis sûr d'une chose : j'aurais du mal à recommander Sunset à un néophyte, à quelqu'un souhaitant découvrir le genre, tant les spécificités (ou défauts) inhérents à ce dernier nous sautent à la gueule, voir s'accentuent.
Dans Sunset, on ne sera pas dépaysé par les décors. Nous aurons droit ici à seulement un lieu à visiter, et plus précisément un appartement. Un appartement certes, luxueux, et qui sera soumis à des changements décoratifs (plus ou moins sélectionnés par nous) avec le temps, mais un seul lieu tout de même. Les développeurs auraient pu tenter le coup de nous faire voyager hors de l'appartement, même dans un cadre purement interprétatif ou imaginatif, à l'instar d'un What Remains of Edith Finch ? ou The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, mais il n'en est rien : le joueur restera « prisonnier » de cet appartement tout du long.
Encore plus dur à accepter pour le nouveau venu, une bonne partie de la narration, et plus particulièrement la majorité des pensées de la narratrice, se fera en s'asseyant sur un fauteuil bien précis, situé à divers endroits de l'appartement en fonction de la période l'année. Une narration limitée au strict minimum, éloignant Sunset davantage de ce qu'on attend d'un jeu vidéo habituellement : on comprend très vite que les développeurs ont pris un certain parti qu'ils ont tenu à suivre jusqu'au bout. Et pour continuer sur le coup du « fauteuil introspectif », il faudra accepter jusqu'au bout le coup du texte qui défile lentement devant nos yeux, et pouvant accaparer la moitié de notre « heure » de travail, ce qui nous empêchera donc d'effectuer d'autres actions que l'on aurait aussi aimé exécuter. Car oui, je le précise au passage, mais nous n'avons qu'une heure (virtuelle) pour effectuer les tâches qui nous incombent. Bref, je dois reconnaître, dans mon cas, que la lassitude a fini par prendre le dessus et que je suis passé à côté d'une bonne partie de cette « narration siégée ». La faute donc au fait qu'on a très souvent autre chose à faire dans l'appartement, ce qui a créé chez moi une certaine forme de stress, tout du moins de tension, sachant qu'à partir du moment que je prenais place dans ledit fauteuil, alors, je me coupais forcément d'une autre partie du jeu.
Quoique quand je dis « une autre partie du jeu », il faut bien comprendre que rien n'est obligatoire dans Sunset. En fait, sachez que vous pouvez très bien terminer votre journée à peine vous êtes arrivé dans l'appartement de Gabriel, et ce systématiquement, que le jeu ne vous punira pas par un renvoi synonyme de game over (et c'est pas faute d'avoir essayé). C'est donc au joueur de découvrir l'appartement par lui-même, d'interagir avec le plus d'éléments possibles, et même dans le cas où on passerait à côté d'éléments cruciaux, uniques, le jeu ne nous le fera pas savoir : avec Sunset, le joueur n'a jamais été autant responsable de son propre ennui. Un choix déstabilisant car Sunset nous faisant incarner une femme noire durant les années 70, avec une grosse vibe blacksploitation et la guerre civile en fond, époque où « la culture occidentale est passée d'une civilisation autoritaire fondée sur des règles de décence et des traditions formelles à une société égalitaire qui célèbre avant tout la liberté individuelle » pour reprendre les mots des développeurs, difficile de comprendre pourquoi ils n'ont pas davantage appuyé sur la relation employeur/employé, ou exploiteur/exploité, pourquoi la romance et le conflit finissent très vite par prendre le pas sur la dimension socioprofessionnel, néanmoins présente. Tout ayant été fait pour briser la monotonie des tâches que notre rôle de femme de ménage aurait pu apporter. À vrai dire, même en suivant la liste des tâches demandées par Gabriel, on ne fera le ménage que trop rarement. Il y a beau avoir quelque chose d'aliénant dans le fait de retraverser le même décor en boucle, le fait est que cela n'a à aucun moment été retransmis à travers les tâches effectuées… même s'il me semble toutefois important de préciser que les développeurs n'ont pas fait l'erreur de créer des « mini-jeux » ludiques en liens avec les tâches exercées par le rôle de femme de ménage, tentés de nous donner du plaisir en travaillant.
Il faut donc comprendre qu'entre le rapport de domination micro (l'employé face à son employeur) et macro (le citoyen face au dictateur), c'est le second qui l'emportera sur le premier dans un premier temps et, autre surprise, c'est la relation affective entre Angela et Gabriel qui finira par devenir le sujet principal du récit. Sujet qui, certes, était présent dès l'introduction, le titre ayant une mécanique nous permettant d'interagir avec l'environnement, de répondre aux tâches confiées par Gabriel, de sorte à se rapprocher ou s'éloigner de lui, mais sujet qui a, selon moi, fini par prendre une trop grosse ampleur, ce qui se passe dans le pays finissant par devenir de plus en plus secondaire. Comprenez qu'au niveau des choix que le jeu nous proposera, que leurs incidences seront surtout visuelles, le titre ne possédant pas d'embranchements comme dans de nombreux autres jeux « à choix », le tout se terminant par la relation amoureuse ou non entre Angela et Gabriel. Autrement dit, pas de choix cornéliens ici, pas de choix qui confronteront Angela face à ses différents devoirs non plus, mais des choix qui confrontent essentiellement le joueur à lui-même, car, une nouvelle fois, ce sera au joueur de s'intéresser de son propre chef à ce qu'offre l'appartement.
En ce qui concerne les changements visuels par contre, outre le fait que nous serons responsables d'une bonne partie d'entre eux, l'évolution de l'appartement raconte lui aussi quelque chose : sur l'état de la relation entre Angela et Gabriel d'une part, sur l'état du pays d'autre part. On a beau avoir vu sur la ville, la dominer, l'appartement racontera toujours quelque chose sur cette dernière. Il y aura systématiquement ce contraste, cette guerre civile sous notre fenêtre, ou plutôt balcon, alors que nous sommes bien au chaud, protégé, dans un appartement luxueux. Un contraste qui m'a davantage poussé à tenter d'agir sur le monde dans lequel vit Angela.

Niveau son, il est à noter qu'on retrouve Austin Wintory à la BO. Et là, je dois bien admettre qu'il en a composé l'une de ses meilleures. L'OST de Sunset est incroyable : en plus d'être éclectique et fournie (28 morceaux, pour un walking sim, quand même), chaque thème est là pour accompagner ce que nous dit le jeu à un moment donné. Comprenez par là que loin de ce qui se fait dans les jeux vidéo habituellement, avec un thème pour accompagner une ambiance ou lieu, ici, tout comme pour les autres interactions, ce sera à nous de découvrir les musiques du titre, l'écrasante majorité étant diégétique. Encore une fois, on peut très bien terminer le titre tout en étant passé à côté de la moitié d'entre elles, mais difficile, d'un autre côté, de les apprécier tout autant hors du jeu qu'en jeu, tant celles-ci disant quelque chose sur l'univers, sur la relation entre les deux personnages.

In my honest opinion, this game doesn't deserve much beef as it received.
If you're in to Narrative driven/Walking sim and like to do virtual chores, then I'd say
don't let the negative/mixed reviews hesitate you and go for it.

I liked how the story branching was offered through rather natural in-game actions,
while you have accountability to your choices.

As for the story I won't spoil, at the time I first played I was driven by curiosity(and a bit of escapism),
an actual war broke out...in right next country I was living that time...so the looming threat of
war and warmongering in the story hit a biiiiiiit too close to my home. haha
(I'm 100% safe so please do not worry. just in case.)

But at the end of the game, it gave me a bit of peace in mind and courage to move on.
So I'd like to express my gratitude in form of review.
Thank you for making this game.

To put the negative things first: Yes, Sunset's tech is a bit wonky. I have a four year old middle class PC and, boy, does the framerate break down when I put the resolution up to 4k. Even if it's from 2015, look, it's a Unity game made by a small team. Optimization wasn't probably high on the list, getting it out of the door before the Kickstarter funds ran out was maybe the higher priority. And to be clear: I'm not mad about this! Making games is hard! Problems happen in development and that's okay.

Let us focus on the good things: If you love Walking Sims like Gone Home and Dear Esther, Sunset is for you. If you love the kind of weird art games Tale of Tales did before, Sunset is very much for you. It's slow, it takes time and there's a lot of things the game tells you is happening, but you won't see. It's not afraid of having a politicial position. If you roll your eyes about american imperialism, well, I don't know, go play Call of Duty instead.

The graphics are relatively simple, but the art direction shines so much through the whole game. The whole 70s vibe and a lot of hidden details show how much the devs loved Sunset's setting.

I love how subtle my choices can influence the story. There's probably bunch of things I have missed that I will gladly seek out on a second playthrough.

Sunset is not for everyone. But if you're okay with some technical disadvantages and slow burn narrative games, I think you will like this one.

Ao longo do jogo, as ações da personagem podem alterar o rumo da história ao influenciar o pensamento de Ortega. Sunset is a narrative driven adventure game dressed up like a job simulator where you work as a housemaid in 1972 during some political turmoil. There's some potential in the concept but ultimately, this is a poorly written story, told poorly.

From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. While initially it might look tasteful, this appearance drops away sharply when you see trees sticking out of the floor in the various apartments you visit... like, not in a pot, the developer was too lazy, they just poke out of the floor, or hover slightly above it. Fail. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's an almost healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

Sunset has the pathetically optimistic price of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. That's an eye watering price that exceeds the price of games like The Witcher 3 and the entire Mass Effect Trilogy. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

I feel bad saying this because I quite enjoyed The Graveyard as a comedy piece (I know that's not what they intended). This is the worst game I've ever played. This is a game about not doing or experiencing anything. You have chores to do in the same house every day, but the game cuts to a loading screen before cutting back to the chore having been done. There's constant talk of a war outside, but you take no part in it. Your character thinks about the war while you walk around looking for the next loading screen. Every chore has Y or N depending on what area your reticle is on, Y is correct and furthers the game and N just makes the game shorter I think. The characters are weird and the story is complicated and disjointed. It's told through post it notes and thoughts, and you can sit down in specific spots occasionally for more monologue. Also you can accidentally skip a day which messes things up.

I can understand both the positive and negative reviews of the game itself and the concept. But I'm incredulous that more people didn't say "oh by the way the optimization SUCKS!". I mean is that not the deal-breaker here?

I've gotten through a few hours of this game (somehow) and I personally enjoy it just enough to give a (somewhat hesitant) thumbs-up. But the stilted animation throughout is straight crazy. Granted my computer is four years old but it is I7 & RX 580...and this game came out four years before that! I didn't even mind lowering the graphical settings, except that didn't help! It's just bizarre that this makes it to the marketplace (and I don't mean to single out this one, lord knows there are others...that Rapture game comes to mind, it is also nearly unplayable on my PC, but to be fair they were going for a higher graphical standard. Though lowering the settings on that didn't help either! Ethan Carter also had framerate problems. I dunno, I can play stuff like Outlast, Edith Finch, and Overwatch on high settings without a single hitch. Sunset does have a very interesting art style but the quality is like Dreamcast level stuff ffs! How is this not running smoothly? (like I said I lowered the levels, and lowered them again, and again...)

Of course I've heard about the rash of terrible top-tier PC ports, but I wasn't aware that it extended to walking simulators from the 2010s.. The conclusion is that this issue all but ruins a game. If my middling computer specs can't handle something, then I'm totally cool with that, bc that's on me. But otherwise (and in the games I've mentioned) it's developers releasing a program that cannot properly perform, and that's a little scary. Seriously, just go read Giant Bomb's article about Sunset, he illustrates my point WAY better than I did.

(PS lol in case you were wondering I been playing these walking games on doctor's orders, due to a hand injury...Edith Finch is pretty mind-blowing, and Firewatch was a lot of fun to play...the main difference is the former has an incredible ending and the latter has a non-existent one)

A very solid and unique game, with lots of options to adjust your gameplay experience. But it's not the best it can be.
The biggest selling point, other than the setting and art direction, is that it's slightly an immersive sim.

Time is always moving, the sun is always setting. They way the city lights turn on, and the colors and shadows change as you play is really well done, and the amount of little things you can find for Angela to give her thoughts on or effect the story help fill the space of free time.

However, it's a very linear game. You're only exploring the same apartment. It's changing each level, but you'll find many rooms locked off each time, which hurts replay value for the exploration and experimentation on limited time.

Haven't finished it yet, but for its gameplay design and what you get each level, it's not worth 20 bucks.
Get it on sale, like how I got it for 4 bucks.

The game started off as "idk what to do", expected of someone constantly exposed to "gamey games pew pew", so the UX is a bit unintuitive at first, but I found myself being gripped by the setting and scenario. The choices will influence scenarios in the game. For example, I'm a thirsty housekeeper flirting with my client in the midst of a violent revolution, without actually seeing him. Sweet. Ooorrr you could also play it cool and leave the relationship professional. Either way, the devs continue to explore creative storytelling in their games, in this case, a development of a relationship under this unfortunate circumstance.

Es gibt Walking Simulators & "Art Games" die mir gefallen, z.B. "Gone Home", aber das hier war nichts.
Man spielt eine schwarze Amerikanerin die in den 1970er Jahren ihr Glück in einem fiktiven Südamerikanischen sozialistischen Utopia sucht und dort als Haushälterin für einen Reichen arbeitet.
Hierbei besteht das ganze Spiel daraus, dass man mit einem Aufzug in die Wohnung fährt und dann einige Aufgaben zu erledigen hat, danach verlässt man das Haus mit dem Aufzug, nächster Tag und es geht so weiter.

Wäsche waschen, Tisch decken und so was.
Nebenbei erfährt man nur über Monologe der Protagonisten über die politischen Unruhe und das immer repressiver werdende Regime, die im Land vor sich gehen.

Teilweise hört man von der Terrasse zur Straße raus marschierende Soldaten, man sieht fliegende Helikopter und brennende / bombadierte Häuser.
Das ganze ist unglaublich repetitiv und in den 3 - 4 Stunden passiert absolut nichts.
Das wäre zu verzeihen, wenn es wie etwa in "Everybody's gone to the rapture" wenigstens viel zu entdecken gäbe, aber die wenig detalierte Low Level Grafik bietet das nicht.
Da sich das ganze Spiel in einem Haus abspielt, gibt es kaum eine Soundkulisse, mit Ausnahme von Schallplatten die man gelegentlich findet.
Es gibt viele Achievements, die man bekommt, wenn man unterschiedliche Bücher, die in der Wohnung verteilt sind, reinzoomt.

Technisch hatte ich auch einige Probleme, wie verzerrte Perspektiven, bei Spiegelungen der Protagonistín in Spiegeln und Fenstern.

Tale of Tales has made some incredibly innovative interactive art over the years; "The Path" and "Fatale" are among my favorite experimental gaming experiences, and I thought "The Endless Forest" was a breath of fresh air in a genre that rarely changes. I still mourn what "8" could have been; it was for "Sleeping Beauty" what "The Path" was for "Red Riding Hood".

I feel "Sunset" continues this trend of singular interactive narrative's; it took me a long time to work my way back to it, but it resembles aspects of Tale of Tales' entire history as a studio as much as it doesn't. Every day feels purposefully mechanical, and resembles the anxiety of real life in crisis to a large degree as one attempts to move forward with their responsibilities while it seems as though the world is ending. I became addicted to these minor idiosyncrasies very quickly, compelled forward in discovering as many texts or events as I could to elaborate on the world outside the apartment beyond the balcony. In working through these tasks, as mundane as they can be, they teach you the layout of the home and ask of you to notice subtle changes. As far as the tasks, usually cleaning or building objects, you do have choices as to how you approach them; with optimism, or cynicism, and alongside that, you have the ability to respond to notes Gabriel Ortega leaves in the apartment in a similar fashion. It's reminiscent of Firewatch, but far more subtle, although I don't know whether that's a good or a bad thing. The space you have to wander, at the very least, is much more claustrophobic and that feels crucial for this experience in which people feel trapped underneath a militaristic existence.

I knew nothing, and I'm glad that was the case, because it had its greatest potential as a resonant experience in being an enigma.

I don´t recommend this game to everyone. I don´t recommend it especially to those who expect action and/or fast progression from the game. Sunset is pretty minimalistic and slowgoing game and there definitely is restricted amount of interactions with the enviroment. But all those aspects are more about personal preferences rather than quality of the game.
I believe the game offers very meaningful gameplay.
The point is to return to the same but always different apartment with the main character, observe the changes that tells us the story of the life of it´s inhabitant. At the same time, we do small changes here and there and with them we can send messages, often unverbal, to him. We also uncover the story about the town and listen to thoughts of Angela about art, war and society.
The artstyle of the game is very beautiful, following design art of the previous century, and the changes in lighting throughout time progression are pretty impressive too.
For those who may enjoy collecting, this aspect is added through search for the books, scattered through the house - each of them adding achievement.
I would reccomend playing the game in various sessions. That way, you feel more like you are returning to the apartment together with the protagonist. Trying to play through in one session could strip you of this experience.
My only critique concerns lags I experienced from time to time for no apparent reason on my side.
Overally, I really enjoyed the game, it felt chilling and thoughtful. Slow building of the relationship between characters that never met and uncovering the story of the enviroment you can see just from the window was pleasant experience for me.

This is the third-best Tale of Tales experience after [i]Luxuria Superbia[/i] and [i]The Graveyard[/i], a meandering journey through musings on art, wealth, conflict, culture, and so on, told through the eyes of a housekeeper. Some aspects of the plot and setting seem dubious; for example, Mr. Ortega is rich and an avid reader, so why are so many of his books cheap paperbacks? Then there's Angela; I [i]really[/i] want to know more about her, as her background and circumstances sound incredible, especially when compared to her mundane job. Still, the game has interesting things to say, the plot goes to some equally interesting places, and Mr. Ortega has impeccable taste in art. There are some wonky controls, cutting through the dining room becomes arduous after a certain point, and the total number of achievements is excessive, but it generally plays fine. The diary feature is handy as well. Not for everyone, but if you've enjoyed other Tale of Tales works and/or arty games in general, this is worth checking out.

Мне очень нравятся игры Tale of Tales, но Sunset поначалу принесла разочарование. Однако со временем, чуть лучше ознакомившись с современным искусством (я всё ещё во многих вопросах профан, но всё же), я стал ближе к пониманию замысла разработчиков.
Если вы ждёте самой игры - её нет, как и в других играх студии. Если вы ждёте какую-то невероятную подачу, которая была в других играх студии - её здесь тоже не очень-то много. Зато есть много геймплейной рутины. Есть даже какой-то выбор - наша альтер-эго может выполнять свою работу уборщицы с любовью, а может и с ненавистью к классовому врагу. Выполнено это очень топорно, хоть в редкие моменты и цепляет. Но как игра оно того не стоит - лучше идите и купите Gone Home. Здесь вечеринка для другой аудитории.
Я рекомендую эту игру тем, кто хочет посмотреть на современное искусство, но не имеет возможности поехать в какой-нибудь арт-центр на биеннале. Биеннале - это такие выставки, которые проводятся раз в два года. И вот Sunset очень похожа на часть такой выставки, но с гораздо более объёмной, я бы сказал, с грандиозной идеей, которую бы выставка всего этого вживую провалилась бы по ряду технических причин. Обычно представленная на таких фестивалях инсталляция малоинтерактивна и не меняется или слабо меняется со временем, и уж тем более не учитывает поведение каждого посетителя. Для Tale of Tales пространство особняка - это арт-центр, который дали разработчикам на растерзание и который готов меняться изо дня в день, из часа в час. Каждый игровой день - новая инсталляция, новые книги и предметы эпохи, новая записка героини в дневник. Но есть в игре и то, что не может сделать уважающий себя арт-центр по этическим соображениям - арт-обстрел (кажется, в таких местах пишут "sic!") города. А ещё там красивый тропический лес за разбитой стеной.

I ended up liking the game. It does draw on a bit much. I think having to sit down in a chair to learn more about your character. Gets very mundane after a while...

This game almost give me a Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window vibe. However there are so many limiting factors in this story. Your sort of presented the chaos of the revolution developing outside the apartment. But that can only be so interesting. When you don't have anything but "explosions", sounds of gunfire, smoke, and the occasional helicopter, jet passing through. Also there is a character that is sort of thrown in to the story. That has an odd feeling to it?

I think the game would of been a little better with it's pacing. If it had condensed it's main character's narration into a journal that you can CHOOSE to read from. That may impact the delivery of the tone of the story for whomever doesn't pay as much attention. But that does clear up plenty of time. And room to possibly address that?

Aside from the pacing being the most critical issue. I think the main character is well developed. The fictional country and events surrounding it feel all too real. The music is Fantastic. Was always excited to play the next record. Finding books, observing the art pieces were all very pleasant, and educational.

The Graphics are pretty good. But there was a stuttering issue with the frame rate. Not sure why that occurs? I think this game is the best piece of work they've developed by far. They said there not going to work on games anymore. So I guess you could say this is their magnum opus.

If your a patient person with walking simulators, and like discovering bits here, and there. I definitely recommend this. The story is pretty alright. The more you play it. A tone starts to develop, which I think is phenomenal. Play it in small portions. Maybe that helps with the pacing? Game is already short. Just under six hours for me.

EDIT: I found articles relating to the studio's closure. Where some of the creators of this title lashed out at it's audience. An a offensives, aggressive manner. As an artist you should never criticize your audience. Whether they are interested or not. Is completely up to them. It's your job as an artist to observe these positive, and negatives criticisms. And grow from it.

It's frankly insulting to be that rude. And put's a stain on this piece that could easily be admired by people in time. I hope the one's involved realize the lack of wisdom, foresight, and respect towards anyone, and or themselves. Have felt sincere regret towards those statements.

Perhaps those insults have allowed them to grow. An a different direction than if they didn't say anything?

I observe a similarity between these creators public outcry's. And that of the protagonist/antagonist? Angela Burnes act's in a very destructive manner at some point in the story. And she definitely shows a feeling of remorse/regret. And wonders if she had truly made the right choices in her life?

This game is [i]worlds[/i] better than the previous walking simulators by this dev. I applaud their efforts to improve. But this is still not a good game.

The game works like this: you're a maid, hired to clean an expensive apartment while the owner is away. Every day you're given a list of tasks to do around the apartment. While cleaning, you learn about the owner, and record your thoughts about the semi-fictional world. As someone who loves games like Gone Home, this sounds like a great concept to me.

Unfortunately, the implementation is extremely poor:

• The explorable area is more-or-less the same every day. The optional interactables seemingly do nothing aside from contributing to some achievement, meaning there is no reward for exploration. Exploration is one of the most important parts of any walking simulator, and they [i]completely[/i] botched it.

• The things you learn about the owner are not interesting (at least for the time I played), and are few-and-far-between.

• The actual cleaning steps involve staring at a short loading screen, which is annoying.

• There is a time-limit which is not conveyed well to the player. When you exceed it, you're forcibly ejected from the apartment, even if you haven't completed your tasks or were in the middle of a monologue.

• The [i]"record your thoughts about the world"[/i] monologues can only be heard by sitting in a specific chair of the dozens in the apartment. This is not hinted at AT ALL in the game, meaning it's very easy to miss. You're not able to listen to them while exploring, meaning you'll be staring at the screen and twiddling your thumbs while listening. And to top it all off, they just give background that is both uninteresting and seemingly irrelevant to the rest of the story.

Overall, unless you're really interested in a "cleaning simulator", I think this one can be skipped.

Sunset is not for everyone.
Not sure how to categorize it, but i'd rather call it an artsy exploration game than a walking simulator. You'll walk a lot, but most of all you'll be searching for the right items.

Basically you're in the role of a housekeeper for a wealthy guy in the 1970s, and you do daily tasks like tidying up, sorting stuff, cleaning and ironing clothes. Here and there you'll have to furnish something, like placing carpets at the right place or hanging picture frames...

While you work on your daily list of duties, you'll get to roam the owners' apartment, and while doing that you'll find books and personal items that tell you a bit more about his life and background.

Not all areas of the apartment are always accessible, some doors are only open at certain days, so you'll have to keep an eye open not to miss anything.

After doing the tasks for a day, you're going back to the elevator and click to continue to the next day, where you'll get a new list of chores.
This can get tiring and many days feel almost the same without big changes going on. I guess it was intended to show a realistic (boring) daily job routine?

After a while your boss starts leaving you notes, if you react to them, it will somewhat influence the story.

What i really liked about the game were the really nice colour expressions and artsy design of the apartment, the music and the voice acting.
It's a great game to relax and take screenshots.

What i didn't like is, that on some days the chores are not exactly clear, so you basically have to roam around in the apartment and search for an item you can interact with to do the task.
That can get boring and annoying, but yet again, maybe it was intended to show a realistic impression of a housekeepers' life.
The story is transmitted in tiny bits every day and can be hard to follow, near the end i still wasn't exactly sure what's even going on.

The game has a lot of achievements, and these give you a good overview of all the (story) items that you've seen or missed after one play through.
It took me about 7 hours to complete the game once, but i've only collected 50% of the achievements, so i'll have to play it again someday.

[h1]Overall, i liked for its unique experience, but yeah, before you consider buying it, you'll have to be aware that the game is extremely slow paced and probably really boring for the average player. It's artsy and relaxing, a little mysterious, but most of the story is rather subtle and needs to be uncovered. If you're up for it, i'd recommend getting it on sale for 4,99 or less.[/h1]

Sunset es un juego peculiar. A través de tareas más o menos cotidianas, que van desde planchar la ropa hasta recoger cristales rotos, podremos conocer tanto a nuestra protagonista como a su jefe. Con decisiones muy sutiles, que tomaremos a la hora de llevar a cabo estas tareas domésticas, además, podremos darle un carácter distinto a nuestra protagonista. Todo ello con una guerra civil de fondo, que nos hará sentir auténtica impotencia por momentos. Un título distinto, con una capacidad casi misteriosa para atraparte.

I understand why many people dislike this game. But personally, I love it. Even if it gets repetitive and far too long for its own good (and it definitely does), it just feels so great wandering around the house, taking in the atmosphere, the art and the music. Even the sappy romance doesn't ruin it.

I guess I just like games that are not very good.

Edit (10.08.2021): ToT sure like their fairytales / myths retellings: their most famous project is based on Red Riding Hood, another one of their games is based on the legend of Salome, and they also planned a Sleeping Beauty game called 8, but things happened. I kinda get the feeling that this game was initially planned to be a retelling of Beauty and the Beast / Eros and Psyche, but then they decided to make the game more... let's say politically relevant, only leaving one brief reference to Eros and Psyche. Which is a pity, because, while the game would definitely work as a fairy tale retelling, it definitely doesn't work as a 'realistic' story about a dictatorship and a rebellion in 1970s Latin America.

Fairy tales don't have to make sense, at least, not the normal kind of sense; but when the game is trying to tell me a meaningful story about a far right dictatorship, the plight of African-Americans, capitalism, socialism and American (neo)imperialism, I'm kind of entitled to wonder why an important official within said dictatorship hires a housekeeper without ever bothering to meet her in person (how would that be even possible in the pre-Internet world?); why they start flirting through notes and environmental clues without even knowing how the other person looks; why the housekeeper is so attracted to him despite being so resentful of her lot; why she doesn't seem to have any other jobs or responsibilities, yet doesn't even try to save her brother or look for a non-housekeeping job (if she's rejected from other jobs, we're never told); and what's the big deal about leaving his house before sunset, anyway.

If you look at this as an Eros and Psyche retelling, it all makes sense, but the game was never marketed as such.

I loved Sunset. This game follows the daily chores and quietly subversive acts of a maid in a war torn country. While the game takes place entirely in a single penthouse apartment, I found the story utterly compelling. Through Angela's narration, subtitled inner thoughts. notes back and forth to her employer and her diary entries, the player follows a story of political upheaval happening in the outside world. Most evenings, the apartment is bathed in orange and purple sunset colors, though as the story progresses, you begin to see terrifying scenes of a burning city and bombs dropping through the huge penthouse windows. Inside the apartment, you can make choices about how to respond to your boss Gabriel Ortega's notes and how to interpret his list of chores. These choices affect how your relationship with Gabriel progresses, although you never see him in person. The apartment is filled with art -- Gabriel Ortega is an art collector, and collects more and more work as the game progresses -- and Angela reflects upon these works as she cleans. Throughout the apartment are various record players, and the soundtrack to this game is breathtaking, adding a beautiful ambiance to the already gorgeous environment. This is very solidly a walking sim game. It is a contemplative, slow burn, which is something that I love, but it may not appeal to players who prefer more action and conflict.

I love how this game portrays the passage of time and encourages you to invest in the space and the people who live in it. Slow-paced, thoughtful, sometimes uncomfortable (but in a good way, I think), and often charming. Might be the only game to make me actually jump at hearing explosions and gunshots.

"Sunset" is a pretty chill game about a young woman tasked with cleaning/taking care of the home of a client with interesting historical and political affiliations.

I mainly stay in the psychological horror genre, so this was a nice departure from what I'm used to playing. Although, some portions of this game WERE creepy, but then again, I may have been looking into things too much, lol. I guess there is just something about being in a significantly-sized home. Alone.

I enjoyed viewing the changing scenery and learning more about Mr. Mysterious.

Each day, you are presented with various tasks you must complete in order to "pass" that level. I did feel a bit rushed throughout my days, because you ARE on a timer. I would have loved to do more exploration and take my time with certain things, but, hey, at the end of the day, this is how the game was created.

The graphics are beautiful, and I truly enjoyed listening to the main character's voice. It had a soothing effect on me, and it may do the same for you as well.

If you're into house simulations/explorations, housekeeping, politics, reading, and history, this may be an interesting game for you. Over the span of a few days (actual real-life days, versus the days I am talking about in the game), the gameplay became a bit repetitive, and I slowly retreated from "Sunset" and back into the night-tinged world of psychological horror.

My rating: 6/10 newspapers.

the creators did not deliver what was originally described on the gofund me page for this game, as it turned out it was just a walking similator doing chores around a house with inner monologue. as the original description for the game insinuated that you play a key role in Espionage being the house keeper.

"It's 1972 and a military coup has rocked Anchuria, a small country in Latin America. As a result, you, Angela Burnes, US citizen, are trapped in the metropolitan capital of San Bavón. Your paradise has turned into a warzone. To make ends meet, you take up a job as a housekeeper. Every week, an hour before sunset, you clean the swanky bachelor pad of the wealthy Gabriel Ortega. You are given a number of tasks to do, but the temptation to go through his stuff is irresistible. And what is he up to? As you get to know your mysterious absent employer better, you are sucked into a rebellious plot against the notorious dictator who rules the country with an iron fist." but sadly it had no intresting plot elements just boring inner monologue of the character while doing errands, so imagine "papers please" about just doing paper work and no other plot points about helping the resistance etc

i personally had high hopes for the small indie dev and as a fan of thier previous works like THE PATH, LUXURIA SUPERBIA,but sunset was a let down

It is a sad thing this might be the last time we get to enjoy Tale of Tales craft. Sunset is an interesting and beautiful experience. The performance was given to bring to life to Angela Burns really captivated me as much as the game environment of the story.

The game could be major with minor tweaks in tech and some environmental details outside of the penthouse complex but besides that, the game does a serviceable job in making its simple gameplay slightly addicting to a slow burn of a thriller and will stick with me.

I will definitely recommend this gamer to friends, even if they don't find the game fully intriguing but I will say to them to just give a chance.

If Tale of Tales never comes back, I hope its legacy brings a new wave of more interesting and beautiful experiences as Sunset, The Path, and others never finish but promising An Empty World and The Book of 8.

Inizio a giocare e l’unica cosa che posso fare è pulire la casa di un ricco critico d’arte, in un paese in preda alla rivoluzione, mentre mio fratello mette bombe per la città, contro lo stesso critico, asservito al regime.

Nel mezzo mi siedo e ragiono sull’arte, sulla politica. Rubo informazioni, giro per l’appartamento, ne vedo i cambiamenti nel corso dei mesi.

Leggi i biglietti che il datore di lavoro mi lascia, scrivo i miei. Non ci siamo mai incontrati. Mentre lavoro metto su degli LP di musica sudamericana, jazz. Osservo l’architettura d’interno anni settanta, terribile.

Penso. Vedo i giorni che passano, i santi del calendario cattolico, le assunzioni in cielo. Nove ore di gioco in una ambientazione tra il 1972 e il 1973 per entrare nel videogioco che, per Tales of Tales, doveva essere il gioco per i giocatori e che invece si è rivelato un insuccesso commerciale tale da indurre i due programmatori a fare dell’altro (ambienti artistici in VR, se ho capito bene).

Dal punto di vista del gameplay Sunset è un “gioco” sbagliato. Per tantissimi motivi. Come ci si può appassionare ad un gioco nel quale interpretiamo una ragazza nera che ha lasciato gli Stati Uniti e ora fa la donna delle pulizie dalle cinque alle sei di sera, una volta alla settimana? E il gioco è – apparentemente – questo, fare le pulizie.

E anche dal punto della progettazione 3D Sunset non convince: i bellissimi colori, la grafica funzionale fanno a pugni con una programmazione che rende gli spostamenti faticosi e il rendering decisamente troppo lento.

Il fatto è che Sunset è piuttosto un’opera di letteratura elettronica, sotto il vestito del videogame. Un’opera di letteratura elettronica che ha anche ambizioni dal punto di vista grafico/artistico. Un’opera tutt’altro che banale, che vive attraverso simboli, riti, luoghi, lettura, suoni (tantissimi suoni) e musica. Un’opera talmente coinvolgente, se si ha voglia di essere coinvolti, e io l’ho avuta, dicevo, tanto coinvolgente che ad un certo punto ho iniziato a cercare su Amazon i libri della biblioteca del protagonista per comperarne uno.

Per poi scoprire che era inesistente, faceva parte di questa America latina alternativa, inventata ma assolutamente credibile.

Quando la rivolta arriva in città, prendono fuoco i palazzi, e la settimana dopo arrivano gli aerei degli Stati Uniti per dare manforte al regime, beh, è un romanzo, è fiction. È politica.

Alla fine il videogioco termina, scorrono i titoli di coda, le decine e decine di persone che hanno lavorato per il progetto e poi, inaspettatamente (un bug?) è ancora possibile restare nel gioco. Rimanere dentro, girare in tutte le stanze dell’appartamento, vederle per l’ultima volta.

E il finale, spoiler, devo dire che sono due o tre giorni che mi è rimasto dentro. Gioca tutto su un simbolo, su un colore, mi aspettavo una fine narrativa e invece tutto è dentro un luogo, un tempo, un colore che abbaglia e fa risuonare l’appartamento che per tutto le precedenti nove ore avevo visto solo nel rosso fuoco del tramonto. Lo sfondamento della civiltà e il ritorno della natura, del vuoto e dei rumori della natura.

Alla fine, Sunset è una delle cose migliori che abbia incontrato ultimamente.

An interesting exploration of a constrained space, and a space which changes based on decisions you make over the course of the game; Ortega's apartment starts to feel like a home, as both he and Angela make their mark on it. The story is compelling, and the way it's told and the sound design both do a good job of making you feel like it's happening around you. My only real criticism is that if you're taking the time to engage with everything, the game takes a bit longer than it needs to in order to do what it's doing. I'd recommend it if you're looking for the kind of story that doesn't often get told in games, however.

The latest and, if their recent tantrum is to be believed, the final Tales of Tales game which has you playing a sort of housemaid for an important figure in the political landscape of a South American country teetering on revolution. You've got an in-game hour each day to spend in your boss's house either carrying out the list of chores he leaves or just doing your own thing; with other optional tasks to be discovered as you explore the house. The plot of the revolution plays out via a combination of your character's musing and notes that you and your employer leave for each other. The latter allow you to develop a relationship with the unseen Ortega and depending on the responses you choose this can be romantic in nature. So, a novel idea that's mostly well implemented but it suffers from ToT's usual refusal to explain themselves very well. It took me a while to even realise that most of the actions have two different variations you can choose from because getting the cursor to switch between the options is often a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pain in the arse. Similarly, you can apparently encourage you character to keep a diary to flesh out the plot if you sit in a particular chair which I don't think was ever explained (or, if it was, I was able to miss it entirely) and I only even realised when poking around in the options after finishing the game. The visuals and audio are general very good, though there's hitches in the performance that affected me quite badly. If you like this kind of indie weirdness in general, and you have a high tolerance for pretension, then this is worth looking at but it's definitely a very flawed thing.

Sunset is a game about war. In the same way that All Along the Western Front is a book about war. If you would like to reflect on the impacts, horrors and confusions of war, I recommend this game.

This game is not like many other games. Some people have compared it to Gone Home, but I think Gone Home is too coherent for that. This isn't a bad thing. It is the difference between a poem about an apartment, left up to interpretation, and a story about a house, which still has interpretations, but is more clearly about an arc. I think this is more similar to The Beginner's Guide. I consider this experience to be an "emotional sandbox" game. More generally, it is a kind of living poem, like other Tale of Tales games. The power of this game is to get you to ask emotional questions about your character and her actions. When the bombs are dropping, do you update the calendar? Is that because that's all you have control over?

A note, the game does not seem particularly well optimized, and I had a few troubles with the controller I was using, but in the end it worked fine on my computer, and the beauty shines through.

First of all, i recommend this game only because there is no neutral mark on Steam (i hate it honestly) so i recommend the game only for 2-3 reasons.
I always had hard time playing Tale of Tales games. They are too user unfriendly and i dislike developers 'cause they were this "You're all bad and you don't understand my works" people. There are a ton of niche and indie games that are leagues above any of their works.
I always thought and will be thinking that the only truly decent game they made was The Path. I played Graveyeard, Fatale and now Sunset. And unlike Graveyeard and Fatale Sunset wasn't complete disappointment and actually had some well done parts.
The game tells you a story about young housekeeper Angela who works on Gabriel, a powerful politican in the country. Gameplay is all about you cleaning the house and making some other stuff such as cooking. The interesting thing is how you can do this things, with love and passion or without and how Gabriel will treat you depends on it. That's what you should know without spoiling anything
And my opinion about the main story. It's boring in many ways. I can say that 60% of the game was boring for me and especially cleaning the house part because i just couldn't find many obvious things. And overall the plot isn't that great. But it had some moments that made me respect the game. [spoiler]It's when the window exploded and Angela's brother died. And final level, i think. The window explosion was the best part in my opinion. It managed to show me a little bit how terryfing revolution and civil war can be. I was shocked because that's exactly how it happens. You don't expect anything until in one day BAM and everything is changed forever[/spoiler]
In every other way except the story the game is bad. Bad optimisation (was lagging as hell), grpahics and animation though it's understandable (Tale of tales went bankrupt after release of the game) and bugs. I can surely say i can't really recommend you the game but if you like arthouse games and indie then maybe(MAYBE) you can try this one. I only managed to play it one time even though devs say that the game has high replayability.

"Sunset" ist ein First-Person Story-Erkundungs-Adventure.

Eine Warnung vorweg: dieses Programm ist sicher nicht für jeden. Der durchschnittliche Gamer wird wahrscheinlich nichts oder nur wenig damit anfangen können, denn es folgt nicht den Regularien, die normalerweise für Spiele gelten. Einfluß auf die Ereignisse hat man praktisch nicht und man selber ist eigentlich auch gar nicht der Protagonist.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 1972. In unserem fiktiven, aber deutlich an mittel- oder südamerikanische Länder erinnernden Land greift das Chaos immer mehr um sich. Die Lebensverhältnisse werden immer schwieriger, die Regierung führt mit harter Hand, Rebellen versuchen die Regierung zu stürzen und die Macht an sich zu reißen.

Ein Szenario, daß eigentlich für actionreiches und dramatisches Gameplay taugt. Direkt an der Front zu sein oder in leitender Funktion auf einer der beiden Seiten zu führen bietet sich an, "Sunset" macht aber genau das nicht, sondern geht auf komplette Gegenteil.

Wir sind Angela Burnes, eine junge Frau, deren Leben sich nicht so entwickelt wir gehofft. Die wirtschaftlichen Probleme haben dazu geführt, daß wir nicht mehr in unserem eigentlichen Job arbeiten können. Stattdessen müssen wir putzen gehen und einer unserer Kunden ist Gabriel Ortega, ein hochrangiges Regierungsmitglied. Einmal pro Woche putzen wir seine Wohnung. Dabei treffen wir ihn nie persönlich, überhaupt treffen wir niemanden. Wir sind lediglich lediglich für eine Ingame-Spielstunde alleine in seiner Wohnung und haben bestimmte Aufgaben. Den Müll runterbringen etwa oder aufräumen.

Ein unspektakuläreres Setting kann man sich kaum ausdenken. Wir erfahren über alles was passiert in den Zeiten der Rovolution nur aus zweiter Hand, aus Zeitungen, die rumliegen, aus Notizen unseres Auftraggebers, aus der Anwesenheit der Hubschrauber, die über der Stadt kreisen.

Wir lernen unseren Auftraggeber im Laufe der Zeit, auch wenn wir ihm nicht begegnen, besser kennen. Er scheint in Korruptionsvorwürfe verstrickt, ist aber auf der anderen Seite ein kunstversierter Feingeist. Er läßt Kunstobjekte in seine Wohnung bringen, um sie vor der Zerstörungswut der Rebellen zu schützen; das behauptet er zumindest. Im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt sich eine Beziehung zwischen der Protagonistin und dem Wohnungsinhaber und je nachdem wie wir auf seine Post-it Notizen antworten, kann sich diese kühl oder intim werden.

Zwei Seelen wohnen nämlich in unserer Brust. Zum einen wissen wir, daß sich was ändern muß, daß soziale Gerechtigkeit durchgesetzt werden sollte; zum anderen sind wir doch von der Intelligenz unseres Auftraggebers fasziniert. Allein seine Lektüre, die wir immer wieder finden zeigt seine soziologisch und künstlerisch ausgerichtete Seele. Andererseits wiederum ist unser Bruder, für den wir viel Sympathie empfinden immer aktiver bei den Rebellen.

Wir gehen also in die Wohnung und putzen ein wenig, finden dabei aber im Büro eine Top-Secret Akte. Sollen wir sie ignorieren, sollen wir sie den Rebellen faxen?

Und dabei haben wir, trotzdem es ein paar Entscheidungsmöglichkeiten im Spiel gibt, eigentlich nicht wirklich Einfluß auf das Geschehen. Die Revolution wird sich entwickeln wie sie sich entwickeln wird. Ohne unser Zutun. Ohne Macht, es irgendwie wirklich zu beeinflussen zu können.

Diese Perspektive der Hilflosigkeit, diese Position des Betrachters von außen, ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil von "Sunset". Es wird nichts direkt erzählt, auch was mit der Hauptfigur außerhalb des Putzjobs passiert, spielt kaum eine Rolle. Jeder Tag, jede Runde startet im Aufzug, von dem aus wir die Wohnung betreten. Dann räumen wir ein wenig auf, finden Notizen, klimpern ein wenig auf dem Flügel rum und verlassen die Wohnung wieder, nur um gleich auf eine Woche später zu springen und wieder aus dem Aufzug zu steigen, um eine Wohnung zu putzen.

Diese Setzung macht "Sunset" zu etwas Besonderem, Außergewöhnlichem, aber auch zu etwas schwer Verdaulichem, wenn man denn ein Spiel erwartet. Für mich ist diese Stimmung, diese erschreckende Hilflosigkeit aber eine große Stärke, etwas was die Situation in einigen Momenten erstaunlich real spürbar macht.

Trotz der ästhetischen Souveränität hat das Programm doch einige deutliche Schwächen. Merkwürdig und unverständlich erscheint, daß wir jeden Tag immer nur bestimmte Räume, meist die, in denen es auch etwas zu machen gibt, betreten können. Die anderen sind einfach dicht. Das verhindert zwar viel Umhersuchen, wirkt aber auch reichlich unpassend und alles andere als immersiv. Schade auch, daß unsere Aktionen, ob nun putzen oder Bilderaufhängen, nicht wirklich erlebt werden, sondern lediglich der Befehl gegeben wird und dann die Zeit übersprungen wird. Merkwürdig auch, daß wir immer nur genau eine Stunde Zeit haben und dadurch manchmal nicht zu allem kommen, auch wenn es nur wenige Minuten über der Zeit wären.

Die Grafik ist technisch eher simpel, manchmal fast abstrahiert, dafür weiß der Entwickler mit starken Farben und Lichtstimmungen umzugehen, die teils auch geschickt die Farbverliebtheit der 70er aufnehmen und reflektieren.

Dafür ist der Sound und die Musik stark. Die Sprecherin trifft Stimmungen gekonnt und immer wieder können wir uns Platten aus der Zeit, oft hochqualitative Jazzwerke, die aber deutlich außerhalb des Mainstreams liegen, auflegen.

"Sunset" ist gemacht von Intellektuellen, von Künstlern, die eine für mich spannenden und neuen Zugang zu historischen Ereignissen gefunden haben, es ist erwachsen, es ist hochreflektiert. Aber es ist eigentlich kein Spiel, es gibt nicht wirklich ein klares Ziel zu erreichen, trotz Entscheidungsmöglichkeiten bleiben die Auswirkungen unklar, es gibt auch nicht wirklich Negativkonsequenzen, wenn wir Mechaniken nicht ausführen.

Eigentlich ist "Sunset" eher ein arthaus-Film über den Zusammenbruch einer Gesellschaft, ein Kunstprojekt, das uns zwar in die First-Person-Perspektive versetzt, uns aber dann aus dieser heraus nur eine entfernte Draufsicht auf die Geschichte liefert. Ein intelligentes Experiment, bei dem man aber die Bereitschaft mitbringen muß, sich darauf einzulassen.

TLDR: Narratively disjointed. Incohesive audio and text assets at times. Easter egg, pixel hunt in small recycled environment.

Engine feels like Unity. The WASD controls with mouselook works. Dev added a variety of useless options such as independent XY axis sensitivity, a 2.5D mode that makes you instantly nauseous. Window would sometime flicker, such as when using telescope, losing the crosshairs and replacing it with a pointer that was not in sync with the game.

Progression is handled by going up and down the elevator. You may complete cleaning tasks, and you may sometimes open sort of easter egg eye candy for the appartment. Later on the narrative will undo most of it however so no point in getting zealous. The game does not keep track of what tasks you do or not so a good rule of thumb is to hunt for them in case they fire a script, such as an explosion outside but more often than not they are simply crossed out and nothing happens. Later in the game it becomes frequent for the tasks to become trivial or even outright absent from the list. Finding what the tasks refer to exactly and where to find the interactable piece to complete it can sometimes be a bit of a pain and I would routinely fail to find some after circling what seemed like the entire appartment multiplet imes. Progression of time is very uneven from instance to instance. Time fast forwards when interacting with a hotspot, so in some instances you will run out of time and be evicted basically while on other occasions with few hotspots you can run around forever and barely any time passes. Ultimately however the game does not actually restrain you from progressing and you can even summon the elevator from pressing the ESC key which is probably the lesser of two evil given how unengaging this aspect of the game can be.

Narratively and in terms of characterization the game makes little sense, going from treating the appartment as a haven, to it being vandalized, to then treat it like an unknown safe haven again. Sometimes text assets will show a seemingly caring housekeeper's thoughts while the audio clip playing shows a plotting characterization filled with tension so when those clash it is never a good look on the dev. The main character in terms of personal development does very little, and passively influences the narrative at most.

The actual idea of having a sandbox with easter eggs set in a cool setting with a ton of exposition and lore works for me however. I have seen this concept used time and time again in RPG's and open world action games. You have a stronghold or someplace you call home and you get involved decking it out and if there are scripts you can trigger in it to open areas of the game or new abilities all the better. But here you do not have an open world to go out and see. All there is is basically the player's home, and the world out there is not very well characterized, only through the voice blurbs and the occasional letters do you learn anything. Even then it is through the very subjective and sometimes seemingly self conflicting lense of the main protag that you are fed your game world setting. It leaves you with very little to actually fill the blanks with in the theatre of the mind and renders the experience more shallow as a result.

Conclusion: While I appreciate the casualization of their title this is just not a rewarding experience. Other than get emotionally distraught, often fail to clean an appartment and generally be miserable while the world seemingly slides into anarchy there is little at all happening here. They did not even bother making each day and instance engaging on its own, even if only out of respect of the player's time. Instead they tacked on a 30 min real life wait of just letting the engine sit there with no hotspot to fast forward things so that you can in theory meet the landlord that you had until then never seen. I ended up going to smoke and missing the little voiced blurb for it. Tale of Tales just... were playing around with some ideas, but this whole black panther's american graduate housekeeper maid in a south american country that sounds like it came out of Papers Please while the art loving landlord both is a revolutary intellectual and a shrewd businessman that sells arms to the goverment. There is just... a lot of material, but they do not do anything with it. It is only a millenial simulator in unity engine, cry, whine, seethe against the world, think yourself a crusader, fail to clean after yourself. While more ambitious than The Graveyard or Fatale, this is still one of the subpar Tale of Tales titles. It was nice not getting stuck, but in terms of narrative ease, it is not much better than hunting for hotspots in The Path. While the narrative was less cryptic and did not rely on keeping you guessing it failed to fleshen up. Devs officially claimed to be done with the industry but have been heard from since but I have by now played all Tale of Tales products and I must say that the entertainment value is more often than not simply too absent to really warrant given the original concepts the benefit of the doubt. I would not blame anyone else but themselves and would try to learn the lessons from their failures if they want to make a good product that will actually achieve much more than whatever they produced here.

I'm surprised I got to the ending of this game ... 3.4 hours later. It felt a lot longer than that. I have no idea what this game is after playing it from start to finish. You go in the same room each and every single darn time. You do menial tasks. In the late game, you do exactly the same thing over and over and over and over again. You are tasked with putting the mail on the dining table and pressing a green button that opens a door somewhere. Opening the door really just means finding the open door and then clicking on some random stuff that makes time go faster.

Except you don't even need to do that. Do you even need to do anything in this game? The story is progressed by your character, Angela Burnes, talking to herself about the events. You'll also see the city scape change with explosions, screaming, gun fire, as a civil war is breaking out. Yet you continue to clean this guy's penthouse.

Does being a maid for a rich dude in a mostly empty penthouse sound fun to you? That's 90% of this game. I usually like walking simulators but this one is a cautionary tale on how NOT to do a walking simulator. The story is slow and plodding and the interactions are dull and boring.

So you're not really part of the revolution, although you do some helpful things. Your boss plays a bigger role after seemingly being part of the system. And you fall in love with each other? WTF? You never see each other. I never felt any tension. I have no idea how Gamespot gave this game a 7/10 or how Metacritic has this as a 66/100.

Rate 2/10. One of the worst games I have ever played from start to finish. I kept believing there was more to the game. You'd suddenly become a bigger part of the revolution. You'd stop cleaning. Instead, you're upset because your boss may be in trouble as you're in love with him ... seriously.

I don't understand why I had to really really complete this game all the way down to the ground. I mean, I even wrote a guide for it- my first one ever.

Maybe because of how I started off playing the game. On my old computer, which is getting a new hard drive, wasn't top of the line. Just a plain old dell PC from 2012 or 2013 I dunno. Got the game as a gift {Shout out Frrenk} when a steam sale was rollin' into internet town. I tried the game. I had no expectations. I didn't read into the game info too much, I just dove in- and was shocked to find the game play choppy, wonky, and my keyboard/mouse skills just weren't up to par for this game. Make sure to check the game specs to see if you can play the game like it is meant to be played. Some will also say the game play is not very good. I think you really have to be a story-driven game player to get through this game while enjoying it. Sometimes the game play tends to be "drawn out" at times. Sometimes you don't know what you are suppose to be doing. But once you get the hang of what the game wants you to do, you will have a better time.

Fast forward to 2018 {Now, Now? Yes sir Now.}
On a hp pavilion 500 series with an upgraded graphics card- smooth housework from there. With my handy dandy Xbox controller, I instantly dove in to finish this story that I started in 2015. I was impressed with the deep story line of a country that is going through a civil revolution against a corrupt president. The tasks set forth were not overly complicated, lots of actions [paths] to choose. Great war sounds and effects. And I was able to complete 100% achievements for the game- Not broken.

Over all, a game not for everybody. But a good game for those who liked it. The story that I now have an ending for. If anyone wants any "much needed tips" before diving into the game, I have added to the Sunset community a Helpful Tips Guide. Check it out.

Full disclosure: I got this game for $4.50 through Humble Bundle. I liked it quite a bit, but I don't know that it's a $20 game, so grab it on sale if you can.

I have to admit, the first few hours of this game are a bit repetitive and slow. The first few journal entries seem to be mostly words for the sake of words, there are a lot of tasks that seem to be simply filler tasks, and I did nearly give up.

However, if you're willing to play through that, about halfway through is where the game gets good. Decisions the player makes start having consequences to the world outside the apartment, and the story becomes FAR more engaging. Also, I have to say that the music and sense of humor in the game really added to the gameplay for me. Why simply clean up the toy soldiers, when I could arrange them into a neat pyramid? And the player builds, over time, a real attachment to the apartment, because you have a lot of control over how it looks, based on the decisions you make throughout the game. It really does start to seem like your home.

My biggest complaint (other than price) is the achievements. There's practically no variety... half of them are just "did you find this tiny book/record that was only there for one day?" It encourages exploration of the apartment every day, sure, but there could have been a LOT more variety, based off of the amount of choices you make throughout the game. I'd do away with about 50% the book finding achievements. As much as I like unlocking achievements, even I got tired of looking for books every single day.

In the end, I just finished the game, and I'm left with the same feeling as when I finish a good book. Like I've been plopped back into real life again, and I feel almost homesick for the story I left behind. While I wouldn't give this game quite top marks, I would give it a solid 7/10, and recommend it if it's on a good sale.

Największym problemem produkcji Tale of Tales jest fakt, że wszyscy (w tym producenci) nazywają je grami, kiedy nazywać ich należy inaczej. Nie wiem, instalacją artystyczną, interaktywnymi obrazami etc. Oczywiście, jak wszyscy wiemy, gry są dziełami sztuki. Niemniej, jak i z kinem, książkami, obrazami, dzieła sztuki mogą być, krótko mówiąc, czytadłami brukowymi, popcornowymi blockbusterami czy zwykłymi akwarelnymi malunkami krajobrazów sprzedawanymi pod zamkiem królewskim po pięć zeta. Niestety, kiedy mówimy o grach, zazwyczaj je z góry klasyfikuje się do tej "niższej" rozrywki, porównując do podanych przykładów.

Rozumiem też, że nazywanie projektów ToT grami ma na celu pokazanie, że gry komputerowe to performance, to happening, to spektakl, to manifest. Ich produkcje krzyczą - jesteśmy grami, ale nie takimi jakie stereotypowo sobie prywołujecie jako gry, tylko interaktywnymi wystawami, jesteśmy grami i sztuką, jesteśmy! I mnie cieszy fakt, że coraz więcej osób, jak krytyków tak i graczy, sięga po takie gry, i docenia ich wartość artystyczną.

Niemniej, każdy performance i happening, mimo określonej nieprzewidywalności w procesie, jest maksymalnie "wylizany" - wszystko ma znaczenie, każde działanie jest zaplanowane na tyle, by w sposób komfortowy (bądź z zamiaru nie) przekazać myśl, którą chce przekazać. I to jest największy problem Sunset - technicznie jest w okropnym stanie. Jest w stanie wieszać się na najniższych opcjach graficznych, tryb 2,5D się rozpływa i traci jakąkolwiek perspektywę, i to w grze która jest bardzo prosta zarówno graficznie, jak i technicznie. Interakcja z obiektami jest utrudniona w ciul, zaś kiedy mamy opcję wyboru, aby móc wybrać pożądane przez nas działanie, musimy zająć się pixelhuntigiem (uwaga aktualna dla sposobu poruszania się za pomocą klawiatury, sterowania padem bądź tylko myszką nie próbowałem). Co zabawne, niektóre przedmioty (ważne!) są w stanie zwyczajnie się nie załadować. Albo obiekty tracą więź z fizyką, np. pudła zamiast stać oparte o ścianę opierają się o powietrze. Można by było to przeżyć, ale bohaterka też jest popsuta - nie zawsze się porusza kiedy potrzebujemy, nie zawsze wykonuje nasze polecenia.

Powyższe bardzo poważnie psuje odbiór danego dzieła, które łączy w sobie ogromną ilość elementów - mamy tutaj bardzo dobrze opisaną historię głównej bohaterki, która, wbrew swojej woli, jest wciągnięta w rewolucję (i historię samego powstania, które rozgrywa się za oknem). Jej narracja jest naturalna, kiedy czytamy jej dziennik i słuchamy jej monologów (czasami ocierających się o bycie manifestami) dotyczących bezsensu wojny w jakiej uczestniczy, utożsamiamy się z nią w całości. Tematy podejmowane przez bohaterkę nie ograniczają się jedynie wojną czy rewolucją - mamy też omówione problemy równouprawnienia rasowego i płciowego, problemy wojny, sztuki, miłości. Uniwersalne problemy, w mniejszym bądź większym stopniu dotyczące każdego nas.

Mimo ww. problemów technicznych, jesteśmy w stanie (choć z zacinkami) poczuć ten specyficzny klimat - jak nijak, za oknem toczy się wojna. Mimo że wiemy, że w mieszaniu naszej bohaterce nic nie zagrozi, kiedy wybucha dom obok podskakujemy w krześle. Kiedy za oknami odgrywa się istne piekło z bombardowaniem wieżowców i pałaców, po mieszkaniu zaczynamy się przemieszczać z niepokojem, z ostrożnością. Muzyka, rzadka i włączana przez nas samych, wpisuje się idealnie, i nie dziwię się, że soundtrack można zakupić dodatkowo (BTW - wow, Malukah brała udział w jego nagraniu).

I choć pierwotnie też narzekałem na to, że jesteśmy bardzo ograniczeni w czasie (na rozgranie jednej "godziny na dzień" mamy maksymalnie 30 realnych minut), szybko się do tego przyzwyczaiłem i zacząłem odbierać to jako ten niezbędny element happeningu w którym bierzemy udział.

Heppeningu, w którym musimy wziąć udział. Niezależnie od naszych poglądów i przekonań. Szczególnie w obecnych, niespokojnych czasach.

Only when I started playing, I noticed the mixed reviews. When purchasing it, I trusted a German game magazine which gave it a very good rating. The thing about Sunset is that it's caught in the middle ground between a game and art. I never played anything else from the now defunct publisher Tale of Tales and haven't heard of any other of their games before. Their approach was to create elegant and emotionally rich art for computers interactive entertainment.

Sunset is a good example for this approach and why it failed. You are a black housekeeper in the South American state of Anchuria. A totalitarian regime terrorizes the people. Your boss is a bigshot with a pivotal role in this system and the resistance against it. Your task is to do the daily chores. You can choose whether you want to do each task in a pleasing or a cold way. When the daily chores are done, there's time left to examine the appartment, write a diary or play some music. This is repeated for more than 40 days.

Altogether, I enjoyed the game. It's a unique approach to storytelling. I really felt involved in the story. I liked the style and especially the choice of music which is rather intellectual but excellent. I didn't mind that not much is happening. It's mostly a calm game, almost a walking simulator if it weren't in the same appartment all days. But I couldn't imagine ever playing this without Steam achievements. Finding those was a big part of my enjoyment. I doubt that I ever will play this again after getting the resolution. A game for mature slow gamers who like visual novels and don't mind quality of graphics and gameplay taking a backseat to story.

A gripping, beautiful game discussing politics, love, and war through the eyes of an African American woman hired as a maid in a fictional country amidst a civil war. As she explores the apartment, you control how involved she gets in the life of the wealthy man who the apartment belongs to and the country she is transplanted in. A very creative way of telling a story.

Still, i want to play it again on a better system. Also, genuinely stylish. I need no more game elements than this, just give me an apartment to snoop around in.

I tend to think of [b]Sunset[/b] as a case study in why cliches become cliches: they work. [b]Sunset[/b] tries to be unique and original, but the unfortunate result is a mess. Both the story and the gameplay are unengaging, leaving us with the worst of both worlds.

The story in [b]Sunset[/b] is about a military coup and the counter-revolution in a fictional Latin American country in the 70s. That's an interesting setting. But then the decision was made to tell the story from the point of view of an outsider who has only limited involvement in the plot. What little Angela does occurs off-screen; all we see is the same apartment day after day, so most events are told rather than shown. Then there's a romantic subplot between Angela and another character that we never see or talk to; I think even in-story, they never actually meet till the end. This all serves to make the narrative feel distant and artificial.

The gameplay can be described as a first-person clean-em-up; each in-game day you have a list of tasks and a short period of time to do them in. Perhaps not the most exciting possibility, but it could offer some amusement. Except that there are no consequences for not doing the tasks. What is particularly damning is that since you are paid to be a cleaner, there's actually an in-universe reason why failing would have a cost. By ignoring it, both immersion and any sense of a challenge are lost.

It's a shame, as there are some original ideas here. If there had been some reason to actually do the cleaning tasks, and your actions could have more of an effect on the direction of the story, this could have been enjoyable. Not for everyone, but at least worthwhile. As it is, I can't recommend [b]Sunset[/b]. Even if you like the atmospheric narrative/walking simulator genre, there are much better ones out there than this.

The game description does a good job of telling you what it is about, and other reviews as well, so I won't go into that. I'll just talk about why I liked the game.

Because I actually really like this game, and honestly have some trouble understanding some (most?) of the vitriol it has received.

The mechanics are extremely simple, and they serve well the way you get immersed in the story: through your own interpretations and actions. The immersion I mean here is not the one conveyed by narrative information - you get that quite directly and in a pretty linear way. No, the immersion really comes from the multiple possibilities you have to get involved with every detail of the game. Your choice of doing the chores in a certain way (or of not doing them at all), the interpretation of the paintings and the statues, the simple pleasure of looking at the gorgeous appartment... all this goes a long way, and as the game progresses you'll see your relation to these objects and choices be recalled.

Obviously, not everything is perfect: the character's walking animation is sometimes a bit weird (and in one occasion you can see the reflection of the back of your own head), the politics and philosophy are sometimes a bit simplified, and the relationship between the protagonist and the appartment owner can evolve in a bit of a contrived way, depending on your choices. But this all remains completely acceptable overall.

One point I absolutely have to praise the game for is the music: it is *really* good, quite varied, and goes very well with the whole ambience. Special points for the attention to detail in the sound design: wearing headphones in-game changes the stereo image of the music. Simple and completely brilliant idea.

So if you like exploring a nice appartment while History unfolds just beyond your reach but still affects you strongly, and if you like to take your time in a game, and if you like nice visuals and very nice music, Sunset is definitely for you.

У меня железо приличное, но при этом игра люто тормозит и лагает. Так что, если вы готовы пожертвовать удобством ради приятной философской драмы, то смело покупайте игру.

Последняя на текущий момент игра Tale of Tales. И, похоже, что мы не увидим новых "шедевров" от этой студии.

Sunset — это, наверное, самая дорогая игра разработчиков, качество деталей серьезно выросло в сравнении с предыдущими работами студии. Вложившись в эту игру, разработчики крупно провалились.

С релизом Sunset выяснилось, что игры студии с претензией на высокое искусство, в общем-то, никому не упали. Они интересны очень маленькой аудитории, исчисляемой буквально несколькими тысячами игроков.

Непонятно, на что надеялись Tale of Tales, но их новую игру купило так мало человек, сколько и в прошлый раз. Результат был немного очевиден, разработчики решили больше не заниматься производством коммерческих игр. Странно, что это не произошло еще в 2009 году.

I'm glad I got this on discount. This game was frustrating. Aside from creating horrible motion sickness if I played for more than 1 hour, the game treats you like garbage.

More than once I found myself unable to complete an objective regardless of having done so on previous weeks simply because doors were closed or the items needed were not accessable. I can't decide if that was the entire point this game was trying to make at how utterly useless you are that you cannot 'set the table' using a table cloth found elsewhere in the flat.

I was genuinely interested in seeing this play through as a story, but the game mechanics were so distracting due to how unpredictable they were. Maybe I couldn't achieve all of these things unless I went back and did things differently on prior days, but there is no way I will ever try replaying this game to find out.

I think this is one example of a game that would have done much better off as a novel. Maybe then I both would have felt more invested in following the story and spend less time worrying over missing out symbolism, accidentally following red herrings, or missing key details of the story,

Le jeu s'est fait descendre sur internet et sur steam, franchement c'est regrettable et triste en même temps vu que c'est en partie ce qui a fait fermer le studio. C'est d'ailleurs un gros souci des critiques sur les simulateurs de marche... Deux camps s'affrontent entre ceux qui disent " le Jeu Vidéo, ca doit être une Expérience, faire ressentir des Emotions, c'est de l'Art , tant pis si ca lag, si ça plante, ou si on paie cher pour 2 heures de jeu, si vous ne ressentez rien, vous êtes des moutons" et ceux qui disent "y'a rien à faire dans ce genre d'expérience, on se fait chier, on s'ennuie, c'est pas un jeu, on arrive pas à y trouver un sens c'est des jeux bobo intello casu d'auteur qui se la pètent, on préfère payer 20e de plus que cette expérience chelou et acheter le dernier AAA".

J'ai rarement vu de critique constructive qui m'a aidé à me faire un avis intéressant sur un simulateur de marche ou un indé de niche, mais j'ai pas regretté de l'avoir pris car, selon moi, il m'a touché et intéressé, et mérite qu'on y passe du temps.

軍事クーデターが発生した中米の小国で、ある大金持ちに雇われ、パートタイムのハウスキーパーとして働く主人公。

勤務時間である日没までの1時間の間にアイロンがけや掃除、洗濯などメモで指示された作業をこなしていく。
基本はコレの繰り返しだ。
自分以外の人間が、雇用主ですら登場しないというなんとも実験的なスタイルとなっている。
作中のストーリーは、すべて主人公のモノローグによって語られる形式だ。

とはいえ、ただそれだけでは済まないのが面白いところ。クーデターが首都での内戦に発展するにつれ、窓の外では砲爆撃の煙が上がり、なにやらきな臭い展開となっていく。
家政婦がうっかり見ちゃった雇用主の秘密や、次々と明かされている主人公の事情なんかも興味深い。

なんというか、家事シミュレーターのついているビジュアルノベルといった感じだろうか。「ゲーム」と呼ぶのは、あまり正確ではないかもしれない。
万人にはオススメしにくいが、個人的には2時間たっぷり楽しめた。

I'm a good fan of walking simulators when there is a good story to back it up. The context was pretty interesting, a subject and area that is not often spoken of in video games. You are a maid in charge of the house of a very important person and must do some cleaning and so everyday following the instructions of the owner that you'll never see in person.

I got bored very quickly, there are so few things to do everyday and the game doesn't have a lot to say.

I really enjoyed Sunset - I think it suffered an unreasonable backlash. The fact that you play as a black female maid is an essential part of the character of the game, not simple trolling (but would that be so bad?) - yes, Sunset is political, but that's also part of the point. The game is encouraging you to put yourself in this woman's very specific shoes, and it's asking - what would you do in this situation? I think that's truly unusual among games, and even among "walking simulators". Although I should note that Sunset is more of a game than other games in this genre. You have time limits, you have goals. It's incontestibly a game, using game mechanics to encourage you to get in the head of a character. Sunset should be celebrated for pushing the envelope.

Au-delà des quelques défauts techniques, il demeure pourtant en tête des mois après la fin d’une première partie, et l’envie de retourner dans cet univers si lointain et si proche à la fois. Ce qu’il faut retenir de [i][b]Sunset[/b][/i] et qui en fait une réussite au-delà de sa direction artistique, c’est la façon dont [b]Tale of Tales[/b] traite généralement avec succès des thèmes difficiles à aborder et vous permet de bâtir une relation que vous aurez envie de construire et dans laquelle vous vous sentirez impliqué. Il y aura bien sûr un peu d’ennui et de lassitude, mais de ceux qui sont en cohérence totale avec ce qu’ils mettent en scène, à l’image de la répétitivité de [i]Papers, Please[/i]. Jouant sur les échelles, de l’individuel au collectif, humain et politique, [i][b]Sunset[/b][/i] remporte le pari d’être ambitieux et de tenir en grande partie ses promesses.

I wanted to like this game, the art style was interesting and fit with an overall 70's theme, but after just under an hour I already found it a clunky pixel hunting slog-fest. Trying to figure out how to clean the windows is not my idea of a good time. I won't go as far as to say this is a bad game, I just never found it engaging...at all.

The idea is sort of interesting, and I was kind of curious to see how it all played out, but I couldn't bring myself to finish it because the actual interaction with it gets kind of tedious, and it's kind of unpolished too. It's a shame it was such a flop though, because there aren't a lot of people who do the kind of stuff Tale of Tales did.
