Spellrouge is a genuienly great game.

If you're like me, you want to enjoy Slay the Spire. Slay the Spire is a great game, it's got great mechanics, it's got a good gameplay loop, but it's hard and you can't quite seem to figure it out. You might think something is good, pick it up, only to realize it's dead weight for the rest of your run.

Spellrouge is obviously inspired largely by Slay the Spire, so it shares a lot in common. If you enjoy most aspects of Slay the Spire, you'll probably enjoy most aspecs of Spellrouge.

I don't like games of chance - I don't particularly care for dice games specifically, because they're often focused on chance - but this is not a game of chance any more than Slay the Spire is. Slay the Spire builds in chance with what cards you draw each turn. Spellrouge introduces chance through what numbers you roll each turn.

What Spellrouge does differently than Slay the Spire - and why I personally enjoy Spellrouge more - is that it offers you more predictability. Where Slay the Spire lets you limit chance by removing cards from your deck (but only so many through the whole run, and at a cost) and cards that let you draw more cards, Spellrouge lets you limit chance by choosing which abilities you'll have available to you every turn, and rolling new dice, rerolling dice, or otherwise changing the value of dice you've rolled.

With Slay the Spire, you aren't sure what cards you'll draw each turn and therefore what abilities you'll be able to play. With Spellrouge, you always know what abilities you'll have available to you each round (well, with the exception that some enemies can limit that in different ways). But Spellrouge also gives you an inventory for your abilities, which lets you collect things with the intention of using them if you get cards that synergize with them, or against paritcular enemies (this would be like Slay the Spire having a sideboard). This inventory even lets you experiment by substituting in an ability for a single encouter just to see if you want to keep using it.

This is not to say your choices in Spellrouge aren't meaningful. You will have to make some tough calls during the run of what to take, what to go for, whether to reroll, what to spend gold on. But your access to abilities is far more consistent with Spellrouge, and that makes the game more approachable in my opinion.

Spellrouge is still challenging though. You won't be winning every run just because you have some flexibility.

All in all, I think Spellrouge is a slightly simpler and more approachable game than Slay the Spire, while still adopting many of the things that make Slay the Spire an excellent game.

If you like Slay the Spire, or if you're like me and you want to like Slay the Spire but you're just not good at it, give Spellrouge a shot. You'll probably find similar things to enjoy about it.

Since Dice and Fold I was looking for a dice/ card game. This one is great and super complex. Lacks a bit on the visual department, but nothing deal breaking.

This game is genuinely excellent, even in the over-crowded roguelike space, and I wish it had attracted more attention than it appears to have. I came back to the game after briefly returning to StS and was very pleasantly surprised at just how distinct and legitimately "better" in many ways it felt to me. Not a knock on StS, it literally invented the modern version of the genre, but SpellRogue is among the minority of StS successors that 1) built something distinct on top of the StS model and 2) smoothed out some of the rough edges of StS.

The distinct element here is the dice-based spell casting system, which allows SpellRogue to continue to benefit from the variance of a card-based game while also allow for a higher degree of player agency and skill expression. The rough edge smoothing revolve around similar concepts, where the opportunity to identify synergies and craft an engine allows every run to feel like you have a chance to win.

Probably the highest praise that I can give for SpellRogue is that, unlike many/most of the most popular roguelikes, I never feel pigeonholed into specific strategies that are simply better/more consistent. Every run that I've played to this point has allowed me to craft a unique and reasonably powerful strategy. This is frankly not something that I've really ever felt with any of its chief competitors, and it's a shame that this game is unlikely to receive extensive future support due to its inability to find an audience.

I've only just started playing this so I can't say anything about the long term motivation, but this game strikes me as a more casual version of Slay The Spire. There are more different mechanics in this, but in turn the game seems a lot more forgiving and beginner friendly.

The different ways dice can be used to pay for spells is pure genious.

There are a few rough edges, e.g. not all spell effects are actually explained in the tool tips. "Merge dice" ... is that.. something positive? What exactly does it do? The graphics are also quite simple, but they do the job.

I bought this at full price and have no regrets, this is a perfect game to pick up for a quick run or two. I did intend to use it on the Steam Deck, but I haven't yet tried it there. In fact I might hop on the couch right now and give it a spin.

edit: The game works perfectly fine on the deck, both performance and inputs are top notch. After playing with this game a bit longer, I have to say it's definitely not as well rounded/balanced as Slay The Spire, but as a casual player I enjoy it more. Definitely worth it, even at full price.

Its okay. It doesn't do anything revolutionary with the formula but doesn't get anything wrong.
However it is too addicting so I'm uninstalling it :(
