I like the idea of this game but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

The largest problems with it are the lack of multiple saves, bad pathfinding, and inability to delete or move rooms. If not for the pathfinding and room issues, multiple saves wouldn't be needed. But as things stand, if you accidentally drop a room in the wrong spot, your entire campaign may be ruined.

Most egregious of all is the pathfinding. On my third map of the current campaign (lake), I happily built a tall tower of important rooms on the small island only to find out after a while that nobody can get in or out of the rooms in that stack because of pathfinding stupidity - they keep walking into a wall instead of the door next to them. Saving and loading didn't fix this, so my run is pretty much dead now and I have lost all interest in playing further.

This is a bug that was first reported 7 years ago and still remains unfixed. Was interested in the upcoming DLC but I've now lost interest in that as well.

I absolutely love this game! I haven't had any bugs or issues, not sure why that is compared to others, maybe I just haven't noticed them? I have completed a few campaigns so who knows. Anywho, It is simple to understand and I enjoy the randomness of card drawing/house attributes. Every playthru is different so I can keep trying new things or adding challenges. Super cute graphics also! Oh and I see they are still doing updates plus a DLC on the way, very cool considering it released in 2021. It's a really great casual game and I definitely recommend it!

I enjoyed this game but I cannot in good faith recommend it. Its bugs are frequent and severe enough to prevent normal play. At its price point, this is honestly egregious.

I'm not certain if every bug that exists presently has existed throughout prior updates. I picked this game up again after having first played it in an officially incomplete state many years ago. It's sad to see where this game has ultimately ended up.

The most significant bugs I've encountered involve pathfinding issues. Whenever you build your university in such a way that it exists as more than one building, npcs fairly consistently get stuck running in place infinitely while attempting to enter rooms in the second building at ground level. This can occur on the game's earliest stages if your rooms aren't fully joined to the entrance, and retroactively connecting them with new rooms doesn't 'free' the stuck npc. Some users report success with reloading the game to free the npc, but I've had no luck with that.

Insult to injury - multiple location stages allow you to build across separated plots which cannot connect, and none of these are the beginning stages. This means you can be partway into a campaign and realise you've bugged potentially multiple teachers for the remainder of the stage. You can stick it out to the end of the stage, losing access to however many classrooms are impacted, or completely restart your entire campaign. It's beyond frustrating to be repeatedly punished for playing the game in an expected way due to its own faults.

There are various other bugs I've observed with object placement, where a played card can sometimes get stuck behaving as though it simultaneously has been placed and is still actively being placed (with the particle effects for item dragging still visible). Sometimes the card visually shrinks and can be rescused and returned to the player's hand by clicking on it in a tiny, shrunken zone. Other times it shrinks so small that the only sane way to proceed is to save and exit to the menu before reloading.

My favourite bug I encountered was in my first dungeon. A few rounds in before a difficult combat started I opened the in-game help popup to look for explanations on what my item cards did, knowing I'd need them. On exiting help popup the game started behaving as though I had started the combat, but that I simultaneously hadn't yet. With no chance to use my items my students got obliterated, and the game entered a limbo state. Combat hadn't begun yet so the dungeon attempt wasn't done, but my students had just died in combat. I nearly stopped playing the game entirely after that.

The game is close to dead on the developers side, with extremely infrequent updates and limited communication. There's been word of an update for some months which may correct some of the above bugs, but there's no way to know if or when that will come. I enjoyed this game and will keep trying to play around these bugs, to push it to its limits at least and enjoy it until I get bored, but that's the masochist in me talking.

This is very unfortunate, and not something you should be seeing from a game at this price without active development or proper disclosure.

I really enjoy the building aspect, and actually didn't realize how much customization I could do until my second playthrough. I like being able to organize the students by skill and what I want to focus on by skill. I still haven't put much effort into teachers beyond the initial choice for a classroom, but I haven't tried the hard mode yet. I also didn't realize just how much strategy needed to go into placement of classrooms or that I really should be talking to other factions (I still usually just boost my gold by getting a ton of vampire kids from the dark lord, whoops). Initially I had been disappointed by the lack of places to build but once I finished the first university I realized more locations open up and they sort of rotate as options, so that was nice. Overall pretty fun, and the campaign for each university is pretty short so you can still pop in and out of it and not get confused on where you left off.

This is a really great and soothing game with bad bugs sometimes.
It's a true pleasure to build your Hogwart and try to get as all the futures available for your students.
The UI sometimes bugs, with notes not appearing.
Got two crashes but the autosave is really good so no worries.
Got a bad bug on the volcano map in which no one could enter an entire buiding due to fires, it was bad.

Honestly, the only real problem I see with this game is that there seems to be a lot of combos and synergies and choices, but in the end you will just spam everything in a general direction and it will due to sheer amount.
I wish we could bond more with our students. In the beginning I was naming all of them, but stopped when I realized one game in way over 100 students XD

I highly recommend it but know what you get into

Взаимодействие с разными фракциями, где каждое решение имеет последствия
Минусы:
Может показаться слегка хаотичной — постоянные проблемы и неожиданные события не дают расслабиться
Интерфейс имеет небольшие недочёты (например, плохо читаемый текст)
И самый большой минус – это рогалик, насладиться построенной школой и максимально развить ее невозможно.
Бои в подземельях куда отправляются ученики реализованы слишком примитивно.

Un bon jeu pour se détendre agréablement sans prise de tête, en plus de la gestion de l'école, vous pourrez vous essayer à l'alchimie en mélangeant les quelques ingrédients mis à disposition dès que vous aurez ajouté les bons éléments dans votre école de magie. ;) Des donjons à débloquer qui rappellent beaucoup les romans dont vous êtes le héros :D, et un fil rouge qui ajoute du piment à chaque déménagement. De quoi passer quelques heures sur chaque partie.

Je profite pour signaler un bug présent sur la carte du volcan ou la zone la plus étroite située à gauche de la carte bloque les élèves et les professeurs à l'extérieur du bâtiment, rendant cette zone inutilisable, j'avais posé un réfectoire au rez-de-chaussé, donc ça ne peux pas être une histoire de porte vu que cet élément donne des accès sur le 2 cotés.

Un excellent jeu de gestion au ton humoristique, graphiquement agréable, qui marque par une ambiance chaleureuse et détendue. Les mécaniques sont simples à comprendre et l'on peut se contenter de jouer sans prise de tête, tout en offrant des possibilités d'optimisation propices à un apprentissage progressif qui est récompensé au fil des parties par de meilleurs résultats. Les objectifs varient d'une partie à l'autre mais l'architecture du jeu reste la même, ce qui offre le meilleur des deux mondes : une sensation de maîtrise agréable ponctuée d'un renouvellement partiel qui diffère à chaque nouvelle session.
Le contenu s'étoffe à chaque mise à jour et offre désormais un jeu réussi en profondeur, au-delà de la persistance de quelques bugs ponctuels notamment sur la collision des personnages qui peuvent parfois rester bloqués devant certaines portes.
Un jeu qui mérite sa place dans les classiques et qui offre toujours autant de plaisir après chaque heure passée !

Spellcaster University is a decent attempt at creating something novel: a Hogwarts simulator. The idea of a game where you can create your own wizarding school is intriguing and while I got a brief moment of joy and wonder out of the game; in the end, it did not hold up enough for the game to keep me interested past eight hours of gameplay. This was largely due to a variety of factors.

For one, the possible creativity you could unleash in this game is greatly inhibited by a lack of open options for wizard house design and castle design. It is nice to have attributes connected to each house, but each time you create a new house, you can only choose from a limited selection of attributes which is randomized each time. Why not allow full access to attributes to allow more custom-made houses? You can choose which magic they use and disallow, but there is a lack in openness when it comes to the house designer overall. I’m sure the devs are working on this and it will no doubt be updated.
Castle design is fun in this game; it’s simple and cutesy. However, you will quickly come to find that the game mechanic used to gain new rooms, decorations, furniture, pets, and architecture limits your creativity. By building up your reserves of coin and a variety of magic/mana, you can buy cards which have the items you need to build your wizarding school. The cards come in randomized packs of three, where you pick one from the deck of cards that best suits your needs. If the game had a more open castle designer with the option to purchase rooms and items at any time like a traditional simulator; it would be a far superior title. BUT the randomization of assets does add some difficulty to the campaign.

The campaign is basic but challenging: get three stars on each map. Stars are rewarded for beating challenges; some challenges are easier than others. The story is bread and butter fantasy; something we’ve all seen before but it’s fine because the purpose of this game is to live out the fantasy of running your own wizarding school. The story is background noise; it’s a McGuffin to give reason for a timer on each map. Meanwhile, there is a free play mode which has no timer thus no threat of restarting eventually. This is nice as a way to build up a school and do your own thing for a while but without the storyline being involved, it quickly becomes a repetitive bore.

This title has potential. It has the mechanics already there; it just needs to be given some detail and customization features. Open up the castle builder, fix some errors and bugs which is largely due to poorly optimized pathing for the NPCs, and let us better fully customize the houses.

I recommend waiting for this game to go on sale before buying.

player is force to either place something somewhere isnt optimal or suffer the lost of opportunity

if the game can replace building block, even just to break stuff down, it will be much more fun to find out the ideal university and create according to it.

I love this game. A lot.
I was overjoyed the new update would finally fix my issues, but teachers are still getting stuck (walking into the wall endlessly). When you don't have teachers, well, your students don't learn anything, and basically, you are stuck.
Apart from this issue...
It's amazing game for chilling. Build a school, build it effectively, keep up your reputations... Choose wisely. The humour in this game is exactly my type of humour. Kudos.
I would recommend it to everybody, but since teachers are getting stuck all the time, I cannot recommend it at all - frustration instead of fun...

I really love this game, great management and building, lovely graphics, but the last update broke a bunch of stuff that makes it really unfun to play right now.
- rejecting student applications button does not work.
- leaving space between buildings breaks pathfinding and get half your people stuck
- In the higher difficulties you dont get a 3rd quest after the first map (is that intended? I like my legendary spell books and not giving me a quest seems like a bad way to handle difficutly. just make the quests harder or something like that.)

please fix these Issues. I would love to give this game a good review, but in the current state it is not fun to play. even the option to roll back to before the patch would be fine, because it was a really great and bug free game before that.

The difficulty in this game is hidden and incomprehensible.

* Everything is just RNG - what students, teachers, events, dungeon stuff you get. There is no way to 'make a build' - if you want to focus on one school of magic, the rest of the systems can still pigeon-hole you into either useless/luck based session.
* Dungeon difficulty is completely incomprehensible - You can go into a dungeon, lose to a dragon, win a dragon, lose to a rat pack, paralysis is OP RNG effect, shield stacking is infinite and overbearing. Often, you might even be better off avoiding the dungeons entirely during a run. Anything above the 'sewer' level is insanely challenging and the danger level scales insanely quickly.
* The school attacks are completely lacking in any info of power levels and what might happen - I've had attacks that just get wiped and attacks that kill off half of my staff/students and I have no metrics/idea as to why.
* No explanation to other mechanics like prestige - I took an event solution that takes half of my prestige which is fine by me as far as resources go, but then half of my students suddenly left. This broke my session completely.
* The event RNG - do you have the items, correct rooms etc., there is no way that the player can influence it aside from just pressing on to generating the correct mana type.
* The UI for decisions - spending most of my time forced into pressing UI 'decision buttons' which are all RNG/not rewarding/can't postpone is not fun.
* The final turtle level accumulates all of these features into an impossible RNG soup and after 3 attempts I have not passed it and I still have no idea why. (Get 5 dragon types, 100% all rep, 2000 mana, ensure against every negative event.. what?)

The building is cool and obviously I have played too much of this game and I love it in a weird way, but dam.

No options for minimizing or postponing a surprise decision - such as if you're 3 mana short for a gated choice. [bold] This was extremely frustrating. [/bold]
No option for disabling VSync (experiencing drops to 15 fps on an AMD system with it enabled)
No settings beyond extremely basic selections
None or very little extension of time window on each map.
Lots of RNG in rolls and acquisitions
Very little control over student training (even if to meet a required # of student graduating in a curriculum) unless you use a House grouping - which has RNG to be provided and RNG in the talent selections
Extremely little control over combat beyond "spam this one spell x inf" and the occasional spell card.
Strong chinglish voice over for opening scene - interesting value add, but imperfect english distracted from story
Finally, overall poor performance even on a very strong system. ~ 50 fps on a R7 5700x / 7900 XT w/ 48 gigs of ram.

Skip this one, even when it's on sale. Go play Mind over Magic.

Je ne demande qu'a aimer ce jeu mais c'est lui qui ne m'aime pas. Je le trouve très chill et vraiment sympa à faire sur quelques parties mais chez moi le jeu crash constemment malgré un PC de gamer récente (moins d'un an) et plusieurs tentatives de réinstall. Donc hyper frustrant de mon côté car dès que l'école devient un peu grande ou que je dépasse les 50 élèves ça crash constamment. Je l'ai eu à 7 euros lors d'une promo mais à 20 euros je demandais le remboursement sans hésiter.

I'm pretty sure I would have enjoyed this game but returned it due to the fact that there was no in game scaling. The bottom portion (where all the stuff is) was mostly cut off and I'm not going to change my pc's settings every time I want to play the game. If UI scaling is added, might try again.

i really liked this game but the game is abandoned so if they allow steam workshops mods it will have minimum 10 years life cycle.
it get repetitive after a while and the dungeon fights, which are the best part of the game, only happens once or twice.

Le jeu est vraiment cool, y'a quelques élément de fluidité de gameplay qui pourraient etre ajouter, pour fermer certain menus par exemple, ou cacher les cartes a choisir pour regarder ce qu'on a sur place pour pas se tromper de batiment par exemple (trompé4 x d'affiler entre le truc des portails et le truc temporel).
Peut etre des parties plus longues pour avoir le temps d'exploité la méchanique des donjons et allez chercher a crée de vrais gros Sorciers.
Apres peut etre parce que j'ai fais qu'une fois la campagne, peut etre sur une seconde ca grinderais plus vite etc

A la fois génial et frustrant. Le système est amusant et c'est un bonheur que de voir le très chaotique quotidien de nos élèves magiciens, mais la fin abrupte de chaque école, et la très vite rébarbative remise de diplômes gâchent un peu la fête. An interesting roguelite building and management sim where you get to try your hands managing H$$warts School of Wizardry, cough cough sorry copyright issue, but with way way more things going wrong than right most of the time. You draw cards and build rooms to teach your misfit bunch of students, and what a bunch of misfits they are, draw cards to strengthen traits or cause worst traits like turning your students into evil psycho devil torturers or deep dwelling merfolks, summons pets with effects (like pooping candy out their @$$), or equipment to upgrade your rooms and staff. All in all you try and complete your assignments in different areas with different win conditions while trying to keep everything from falling into chaos, did I mention you can be attacked by the forces of evil anytime? Oh and don't forget playing politics and keeping the factions happy lest they cause bad effects to your school.

Pros
+ interesting concepts, there are a few games of the same genre and ideas but none so far I believe is card based and so randomised so may derail your min max a strategy outright but depending on luck fairly a lot.
+ The synergy of effects of the cards, the rooms, your student's traits, staff traits, and a whole lot of factors affects the game. Now some people would enjoy the challenge of such random gameplay others might pull their hair out, that's on you.
+ Interesting settings with each stage giving different challenges and limitations on the game you can play. Appeasing factions, juggling career goals of your students and trying to keep the evil progress at bay as you sort out your dysfunctional heck of a magic school can be fun, but also random.
+ Fairly interesting setting and world buildings, there are specific challenges for some stages with effects on certain aspect of your play style as you need to adjust to it or else fail.
+ Interesting dungeon quests which can be risky for huge rewards or frustrating to the player.

Cons
- The random cards means a lot of things depend on luck and it plays a lot into your win and challenges, at times truly unfair when you get bad draws or missing the cards you need at the time you needs it.
- The artwork and graphics are nothing to shout about but fairly decent for the gameplay, it serves it purpose but don't expect to be wowed.
- Again with a random game and luck the career goals can be tedious to achieve if you draw the wrong cards, the storyline with several stages to the win condition also can be affected badly due to card choices.
- A lot of things are not really explained like how far would students go for classes, how certain things interact apart from the basic gameplay. A lot of it is trial and error or at worst just go online and read a bit on the mechanics and advice given so you don.t blow time doing the wrong thing for small gains when you could have just find the answer from the start.
- A ton of micro managing involved, like sorting students to houses, tweaking the benefits or bonuses based on student's traits for evil or good, managing staff as well as their needs and wants, managing relationship of factions when at times they come with requests for absurd demands and managing the evil progress can be taxing or overly involved.
- The evil progress bar is super stressful and keeps you from engaging more focused on the task at hands and other matters.

Like many 'passive city-builder' games, it falls victim to the feeling of "what is the point?" problem.

Decision making doesn't feel consequential enough like a deck-builder.
City (or school) layout doesn't have much strategy.
The build time/resources aren't levelling up like a rogue-lite.
There isn't a greater story or arc unfolder.

I could go on - but ultimately, the issue is that it does a whole lot of things "okay-ish" but never scratches any particular itch from a gameplay perspective.

It's a pass from me.

I've played a lot of this game, and it's generally great.

However... The pathing is ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Sometimes, if you place your buildings in a certain way (which you won't know until it happens), your students (or worse: teachers) will get stuck trying to get somewhere. And they will sprint all out to get there. On the spot. Going nowhere...

This happened to me most recently in the Volcano region, which has an increased incidence of fires. When a room has a fire, it completely shuts down. There were two fires, and teachers were assigned to both fires. They were stuck. So not only were both of those rooms shut down, but ***the rooms those teachers teach in*** were also shut down because the teacher was stuck on a task.

I haven't run into this bug before, that I recall, but it's game-breaking. There are complaints about broken pathing in the forums going back several **years**. I recommend against buying this guy because of this, and I will not put a penny towards the DLC until I see that it's fixed.

Very good and enjoyable on lowered difficulty if you need a break. Grab a tea or a gummy and watch tiny people run from accidentally summoned chaos vortexes. The animations are cute and the gameplay is engaging enough to keep coming back. Especially on sale I'd say it is definitely recommendable. I personally didn't find it too repetitive, but I can see how it might feel that way for some.

It's a magic management sim where you're basically the headmaster, except you can't actually tell anyone what to do, which is probably more realistic than we'd like to admit. You just build rooms, hire teachers who may or may not be competent, and hope the little bastards learn something before the whole school explodes. Which it will. Every time. That's not a spoiler, that's the game.

Look, if you're the sort of person who enjoys planning seven steps ahead and optimizing spreadsheets for fun, you'll absolutely love this. The art's adorable - proper charming stuff - and there's genuine complexity hiding under all that cuteness. It's got replayability coming out its ears because your students graduate, carry forward bonuses, and basically haunt your future schools like magic-wielding ghosts of Christmas Past.

The rotating map system is brilliant: your school gets destroyed, you start again, but you're not starting from scratch. Past students leave legacies, curses, blessings -it's like if Majesty and a management sim had a baby, and that baby was really into self-destruction and phoenixes.

The humor's spot-on too. Light when it needs to be, dark when it doesn't, and there are these messengers you just have to see for yourself. Plus the faction system, the worldbuilding, the variety -it made me think, "Christ, you could build a whole genre out of this." Indirect management through environmental manipulation? That's not just clever, that's interesting.

Here's the thing though: it doesn't really matter what strategy you use. You can play it safe, you can go mental, and the outcome's roughly the same. Which makes it repetitive. And tedious. And when a game becomes tedious, that's when you start noticing all the other problems.

The UI is a mess. Cards get stuck, the screen zooms in for absolutely no reason, you misclick because everything's moving about like it's had six espressos. You can't even demolish a room if you put it in the wrong place -one misclick and you're stuck with a toilet where your library should be. Good luck explaining that to the accreditation board.

There's one save slot. One. So it's Iron Man mode whether you like it or not, which is fine if you're into that masochistic sort of thing, but don't expect to experiment without consequences. Oh, and bugs. Bugs that lock the game completely. Bugs that just annoy you. The kind of bugs that make you wonder if anyone actually tested this before shoving it out of Early Access.

It's fun. It really is. But it's also unpolished, occasionally infuriating, and definitely not for everyone. If you like sims and you're willing to overlook the jank, you'll have a good time. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if it is your thing, you'll drink the whole pot despite the leaves at the bottom.

I found this to be a pretty interesting management game that is relaxing while still needing thought put into your decisions. It is fulfilling to watch your students evolve, and the ability to send them on dungeon expeditions where they can use what they've learned adds to that. The story and writing is whimsical and fun. Would probably recommend on sale as it has been out awhile and you should have no problem finding one.

I love the creativity and whimsy of the game, the strategy and roguelike gameplay is great too! The music gets a bit repedetive and is not the strong suit of the game but I am surprised how well made it is overall! My only ask would be to be able to recolor the walls of the rooms, it would give so much more personality to the buildings itself and set every new school apart. It would also help differentiate the types of rooms if players would want it.

I had a decent amount of fun with this one. You just gotta accept you cannot control everything, the students and professor are being nudged what to do, but will not always study the things you would like them to. The building of your university in each level is always fun, to see it grow, students becoming better mages... Also dungeon crawling is surprisingly fun, even if being very simplistic, I always looked forward to try out my students and their deadly magic against dungeon monsters.

If you're willing to learn about various mechanics and plan ahead, then this is the magic management game for you. While it does get repetitive, planning for certain futures and efficiently utilizing the variety of items and upgrades available to you can make your inner headmaster flourish. I will be honest, I think this game had a steep learning curve - but that might be because I've never played base building/colony sim type games before. I think about 10-15 of these hours were me trying to learn how to play the game, looking at guides, reading the in game explanations, etc. until I finally figured it out. By the time I realized I sort of understood what was happening, I was like ohhh I'm really hooked on this I have to complete it. I think base building games aren't my favorite and I'm not sure if I'll replay, but I actually really enjoyed playing the game and all of the magic components. Definitely recommend, even for beginners (like me)!
