Spark 3 is an enjoyable game, but it falls off at the end which seems to be a trope with this series. Most of the game is great, it features fast and free platforming with a high skill ceiling making it great for speed runners and also features some neat stage mechanics. If I had to describe a lot of levels, think of the opening cinematic of Sonic Unleashed where Sonic storms the Egg Fleet under a barrage of gunfire, very cool very exhilarating.

As to where the gameplay falls off bigtime, I have to go into depth.
First off the Rally levels. Whenever you try to attempt drifting, you'll inevitably hit a wall and when you do, the car either flys off the track or it rolls over, and when it does you are forced to restart from a check point cause there's no way to get back on the track or roll your car back onto its wheels, as a racing fan, this is very disappointing.

Next up would be Area 7, which is when the game introduces you to falling from great heights. In this game when you fall from a great height a danger meter appears and when it fills up you die automatically, the problem is when this is implemented into stage design you have to cancel your fall with a dash, jump, or charged jester dash to reset the meter so you can get to the bottom of the jump. I do believe this was implemented to keep the player from skipping most of Area 7 by just jumping off the stage since the level design is basically a giant cylinder that you have to descend down into, and not only that, the level is massive so adding a ton of out of bounds zones that insta kill would've been a huge undertaking for one person. In a perfect world where more work could've been done on the stage, I think the Downward Dash would've been better for breaking Spark's fall, kinda like Mario's Ground Pound.

Finally my last gripe with the game, the end. The last level is a giant gauntlet that is probably 40 min of gameplay depending on how well you do. It starts off with a reoccurring bossfight that you fought against 2 times already, and then a giant 20+ min level that throws the book at you, I'm talking every annoying mechanic in the game. It also features a brand new mechanic which is basically a giant cloud of gas that obfuscates the players view of the level, also accompanied by pits. This level also features much more precise platforming than the rest of the game. All in all I do believe the intention was to make the level long and drawn out and as difficult as possible to farm your lives before the final 2 bosses, just like the final level of Spark 1, how does he keep getting away with this, am I right? The final two bosses were kinda weak compared to Fark and Freom in Spark 1, the first boss was a 3 phase fight with very predictable patterns and the final boss was actually one phase which I actually kinda liked cause I was getting burned out by the stage length. I wish the last level could've been broken up into segments that you didn't have to play in one go.

So yeah those are my thoughts, if you enjoy Sonic like I do, I think this would be up your alley, but if you're not a die hard Sonic fan and prefer a more polished experience, you might not enjoy this one. All in all I think the game offers some great value if you want to experience the Spark series in its entirety since it features all of Spark 2's levels without the need of buying Spark 2 or a DLC add on.

basically, take everything wrong about Spark 2 and make it good. Spark 3 might be one of the best 3D platformer I've ever touched. If you have a decent PC, you HAVE to play this game (there is a switch port, though I'm gonna say that it's very rough and might ruin the experience). The combat has been fixed since Spark 2 and now it's not a "button smash" anymore, one of the main complaints I had with Spark 2 is that the combat was simplified since the first game, making the bosses and other enemies' fights really easy. Luckly, this was fixed in this game, some of the bosses are still pathetically easy but they're 10 times better than Spark 2's bosses - you actually have to dodge the attacks instead of just parry them endlessly, and makes the bosses and enemies much more satisfying to defeat. Another complaint I had with Spark 2 is the stages feeling too linear, in Spark 3 the levels are massive - you can basically explore the village area in Terminal Village, or the fact that they added the exploration medals which encourages the player to explore more of the levels. Lastly, this is the best conclusion and overall the best story in the trilogy (WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD). [spoiler] the way everything that happened in the first two games relates back to Clarity and how everything Spark did in this game only helped her to reach her goal was such a nice twist, Claritas Centralis was one of the most eerie final bosses I ever fought but it was worth it. [/spoiler]

TL;DR: Spark 3 is a fantastic game that you should definitely try, I still recommend to check the other two Spark games if you haven't despite their issues.

это просто восхитительная игра. спарк 3 - наглядный пример того, что любая идея может стать чем то очень прекрасным и интересным. сюжет в этой игре это вообще снос башки, не говоря о геймплее, гейм-дизайне уровней и собственно, графики. скажу один факт для новичков - Фелипе сам создал движок для этой игры, и выглядит он в разы лучше, чем hedgehog engine 2 (движок последних игр о сонике).

Spark 3 is an improvement on the formula introduced in Spark 2 and it adds so much more things to do which end up being rather enjoyable.

The game has so much replay value and it never feels boring which could be credited to the tight & fast responsive controls.

10/10 would Spark my jester again.

A decent Sonic Adventure-style platformer.

Pros:
Good sense of speed and platforming most of the time. Music very solid.

Cons:

One of the best Sonic games while not be Sonic game. Developers did a great care to this sequel and after finishing it is hard not to recommend it.

While Spark 2 was heavily inspired by Sonic Adventure 1. This game takes a lot of from Sonic Adventure 2,Sonic Heroes and some minor elements from later installments.

Like in prequel game shines in level design, multiple paths are available to take an incentive to finish level as fast as possible with exploration option. Controls are tight, almost no automation. Loop sections are finally enjoyable to run and less fear to get of track.
Combat in this game is the same as in Spark 2 and even more reliant for parry system depending on selected difficulty. It's not the best but not huge hindrance. Recommendation to select easier difficulty for combat if you want end it faster and it does not affect main story.

Almost no bugs detected, just few times Spark teleported back a huge distance to previous level section but not too far. What causes it, did not manage to replicate, just random occurrence after taking damage during homing attack,

welcome to Spark 3, if you played Spark 2 beforehand, you will appreciate this game so much more
the game has a lot to offer, it feels like 3D sonic, its fun to play, there are upgrade, the story comes to an end

if you like the game theres a lot to grind and speedrun and so on, so theres still a lot more game time you can spend

the biggest flaw imo are the upgrades, that dont rly feel like real upgrades, just like lil nice to have things
and man, i miss all the cool kirby style transformations
still a very cool and fun sonic-like game!

I've had a very fun time with this game, just a great experience from beginning to end. Such a great example of how to properly draw from inspiration from a franchise to create an experience just as engaging as the best of what it has to offer. Definitely recommend if you a fan of the Sonic Adventure games.

Level design takes more after the open-ended structure of 1 than the linear structure of 2, but I think it's done pretty well, as collectibles and various opportunities to increase score are scattered throughout the levels, but you can also speed your way through it if it's time you're focused on.
While I'm satisfied with most of the speed medal requirements, I do think some score numbers should be adjusted to make the score medals more challenging, but outside of that, I like the change of separating the 2. Gets you more replay value out of the levels that way. I especially like some of the sub-levels that center around using certain mechanics, more or less just teaching you to use them through its level design.
Favorite levels were probably Protest Prison, Airstrip Madness, and Utopia Shelter

Spark's general movement and new movement options are greatly appreciated. I've seen people dismiss the fall damage mechanic, but I love it because it actually adds a layer of depth to staying airborne, making sure that you are constantly taking action to reset the meter, and can't just skip over all of the levels with the magnet dash without some form of consequence.

Combat here is alright, vast improvement over 2's, though it mostly gets points for existing, and not completely diluting the main campaign experience. It's weaknesses start to show in the side content where some levels force you to fight enemies

The health based Enemies are way too sandbaggy, don't really push the player to do much outside of getting them in the air for an infinite juggle combo. The Parry is far too overpowered. They should have more enemy types with unblockables, or grabs, or any sort of counterplay, to actually make you move around the arena
Same thing applies to most of the bosses, though I do enjoy the secret boss at the end, and the inclusion of double in the endless floor challenge.

All-in-all, this is a top-notch 3d-platformer, and I can't recommend it enough!

Play this game if you ever wondered "What would 3D sonic games be like if Sonic Team stopped smoking crack?". Your movement is fast, fluid and free (save for the very generous fall damage timer, which you can reset by jumping or dashing), encouraging creativity in the paths you take and skill in order to maintain your speed. Combat is fun too, and very forgiving in boss battles and the occasional area where you must defeat enemies to progress. And if you really dig fighting, there's even an unlockable bloody palace type of deal [spoiler](that you can progress in to unlock an extra boss fight and ending sequence)[/spoiler]. You can also adjust the difficulty of combat and platforming independently

Basically, everyone already knows this is Sonic done right in 3D, and if this was a Sonic game, it would easily be top 5 if not top 3 Sonic games of all time. With only Sonic Adventure 1, Adventure 2, and Shadow Generations rivaling it IMO. Of all these 4 games, they all have different strengths and weaknesses.

The Strengths of Spark 3 is that there is basically NO automation. You are 100% in control of the main character at all times!!! As much as I love Sonic Adventure series, they do relay a bit too much on automation, and it only got way worse with future Sonic games, especially when it reached boost. Spark 3 also have ZERO forced 2D sections!!! Which is amazing! I get so frustrated at Boost games constantly doing 2D over and over! It was a slog to finish Sonic Colors cuz of this. I have no issue with 2D, but when a game is advertised as 3D, I want the majority of the game to be 3D! And 3D is my personal favorite, and IMO, Sonic as a concept works WAY BETTER in 3D cuz you can see farther ahead of yourself. I honestly believe Sonic Team only shoves in so much 2D in their 3D games cuz they are too lazy to do 3D right, cuz 3D takes much effort to make than 2D.

Anyways, Spark's level design is basically flawless as well, rivals even Sonic Adenture 1, which is the best level design in any 3D Sonic game IMO. But I'd say Spark 3's level design is even better. The levels have variety, but I find it just the right balance of open and linear fast, and very fun to replay the levels to see what you might have missed.

Spark 3 has balanced speed with platforming the best I've ever seen, and that is not an easy task, because it seems those two those are quite opposing by nature. But it is very fun balancing your speed momentum, and figuring out ways to do large skips, feels like your "breaking" the game, but in a good way, it feels intended cuz it most likely is.

Some negatives, the combat is not as bad as most I heard, but it's not great either. I actually don't mind combat in a game like this, but I think it could've felt better and more impactful. Which also brings me to probably the most negative thing in the game, Spark feels super light, and hitting and homing attack things doesn't feel that hard-hitting and satisfying. I know it might sound crazy to some complaining that a speedy character feels too floaty and light, but I honestly think it feels sllightly better if he felt a little heavier and hard-hitting. Like hitting enemies with the Homing attack in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 felt MUCH BETTER than the homing attack in Spark 3.

Also another part why some things don't feel as satisfying is the sound effects. I just don't think the sound effects hit as hard or as satisfying as they should be. Like bouncing off springs, hitting enemies, homing attack enemies, etc all has much weaker sound effects compared to Sonic.

Last negative and least important negative, story is not that great, but this is a platformer, so story isn't that important. I don't think anyone is going into this game for the story, but a good story never hurts. IMO, Sonic Adventure 2 has the best story in all Sonic, yes, it's goofy as it should, but the rare times it gets serious, it actually feels serious, and overall has a big epic cinamatic vibe. Spark 3 has none of that, but I don't mind it, but not having stuff like that is always missed by me, and gives that little extra motivation to keep playing.

Overall, Spark 3 is still a fantastic game, and HIGHLY reccomended if you like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 gameplay. It's a shame Sonic Team completely gave up in this style of game for so long, they could've perfected the formula SO MUCH over the years, but instead they decided to completely ignore if for almost 2 decades, which is insane when you think about it. I don't mind boos games that much, but c'mon Adventure style is just better and has more depth, and shame they still could've threw in a few Adventure style games between the MANY MANY boost games. But Spark 3 is the closest you will get to modern Adventure formula done right.

genuinely incredible, one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played.
an allegory for the sonic series:
Spark 1 is the Sonic 1 of this series, Spark 2 is the Sonic Adventure 2 of this series, Spark 3 is Unleashed if it was incredible and didn't completely abandon the root of the series. It is genuinely the Sonic Adventure 3 of the Spark the Electric Jester series.

Unlike spark 2 which feels like it's awkwardly blending in elements from the first game whilst trying to be its own thing, spark 3 builds on spark 2 and only borrows stuff that would work within what it's trying to do rather than feeling like it's included out of necessity. Rather than awkwardly shoving in things from the original game like spark 2, for example the Kirby-esque jester outfits, we only get 2 alternative movesets and this game instead focuses on taking the core movement from spark 2 and perfecting it, whilst still adding some progression through the ability unlocks.

The combat is completely overhauled, opting for spectacle fighter style combat rather than the button mashing snoozefest of spark 2. It's much more parry heavy than spark 2 but the parry has also been nerfed allowing for actually challenging encounters. Whilst this combat does feel great it's very divorced from the high speed platforming and yet is a core feature of the game, so if you don't like it you might struggle to enjoy this game as much as you otherwise might.

The environments are incredibly detailed, and bring back the same beautiful level of presentation in the first game whilst making the routing feel more cohesive and flow better overall.

The art direction has been completely changed, and the overall visual quality is absolutely incredible and a massive step up from spark 2. Whilst spark 1 had an incredibly charming artstyle that felt intentionally rough, and had some absolutely beautiful moments that really showcase the dev's incredible skill, spark 2 felt rather lackluster, which can absolutely not be said for this game which is absolute eyecandy.

The story is able to standalone from the first 2 games, as it retells a decent amount of it, but I'd still recommend playing the first 2 beforehand if you're interested in it.
If you are playing for gameplay alone I'd still recommend playing spark 1 as it is almost entirely different from this game and is incredibly good in its own right.
I would still recommend Spark 2 as it is still a fun game but overall it just kinda feels like this game but less polished and more confused in what it's trying to be. The levels from spark 2 are also unlocked in this game after you beat the final level so you don't have to worry about missing out on those.

ties the story of the first 2 games in well. the update that added the spark 2 levels are great. still runnin thru it to complete. them speed medals are a bit of a pain but that's why ya memorize your routes when goin through the stages. solid experience.
8/10 I miss the jester powers like edgy and archer. fun
downside is the falling mechanic but you can figure out to abuse the ♥♥♥♥ out of it if you're good enough. (wall running/sliding/chargedash)

If you like the gameplay of 3D sonic games at all you SHOULD buy this game. It mixes the fun and open-ended movement of early sonic games with the level design chops of modern sonic, and you can tell A LOT of love and care went into the movement mechanics and the level design. You can REALLY see the level designers of this game flex their talents in the latter half of the game when it starts to pick up, and some of the production and set pieces are up there with the best of what Sonic Team has put out.

This game takes cues from almost all the 3D sonic games, including some surprising things like the werehog fighting from sonic unleashed, and the car racing levels in sonic adventure 2. I've played most of the 3D sonic games, and probably all of the good ones, and this game is probably in my top 2 along with Shadow Generations, and it's not even a sonic game. There are some parts of it that are a little rough around the edges, but the good far outweighs the bad.

This game simply shouldn't exist.

For 3 years I've contemplated how exactly I should even write a review for Spark 3 simply because of that alone. (And I'm sure my words won't be able to properly express how I feel or do this game justice.)

Games nowadays are made by huge teams, with massive budgets, cost absurd prices and take forever to come out. Only for them to be some open world, generic game bringing nothing to the table. And in the end they also somehow end up buggy and unfinished with them only being fixed later on.

Even some indie games can take forever to come out now, although they usually still end up being great games.

Somehow, LakeFeperd must be channelling some special powers because not only did Spark 3 come out 3 years after Spark 2... It improved on it in every way, expanding on what's established and pushed it to become one of the best platformers ever released and easily one of my favourite games.

[h2]The Electric Jester[/h2]

Spark controls... Perfectly. The easiest way to explain this is by comparing Spark to his obvious inspiration, Sonic.

It's like if you mashed the controls of Adventure, the speed and thrills of World Adventure and parkour and ability of exploration of Lost World into one and it works perfectly.

The base controls feel so incredibly refined with the perfect amount of weight that doesn't feel too much or too little. When you jump and move everything feels as expected, it's natural and feels grounded but it gives you enough to be able to perform tricks around the levels.

The sense of speed and thrill gained from using Sparks moveset and momentum with the level design creates this feeling of accomplishment for pulling something off with the reward of your speed being kept.

And unlike Lost World the Wall Running in Spark 3 carries your speed and you aren't locked to a wall like glue, you can hop on and off whenever and however you see fit.

This makes for a very fun platforming experience and absolutely smashes past how Spark 2 and other 3D platformers feel. When I say perfect I mean it, I honestly can't see anything that needs improving.

Sparks moveset is also fairly large and only grows throughout the game. At the start you have what feels like standard with the "Stomp" (which carries momentum!), Charged Jester Dash, the Jester Dash (instant speed push), wall jumping and wall running. Great for starting out.

Most things added (which you unlock throughout the shop) is in aid to keep your speed going.

You can unlock natrual moves to Spark such as a rail boost (which uses energy) or the Jester Swipe (which is the light speed dash but can be used anywhere and properly increases speed and momentum).

Or energy moves such as the Energy Dash which can give you a needed boost to get you back going or if you just need that extra push for something.

Inside the shop are the extra forms Spark has access to. Gone from the stages and it's fairly limited this time round, from the get-go you now only have the Reaper Jester and as for Sparks forms that quite literally it this time.

However there are still more characters you can use which you unlock as you go through the game so if you're looking for the same variety of moves and powers as before they're technically still here, just now unlocked through the shop rather than levels with the forms being less for more characters.

Other things in the shop are in aid to other things which could be for exploration and for-

[h2]Combat[/h2]

Something effectively overhauled from Spark 2 and is one of the things to make Spark stand out from the rest of the usual platformers is the combat system and it's very solid now.

In Spark 2 combat felt very basic where you could just mash moves over and over and easily win any fight with the broken block but now the block is a safety measure that can block 1 hit or a perfect parry (that gets you energy)

The bigger change is the combo meter, you're incentivized to stray away from spamming the same moves to win to instead utilize as much of Sparks moveset in combat as much as possible. Bigger your unique combo the more damage Spark does.

Each one of Spark's moves also feels impactful, when you're landing hits on bosses everything feels like that's your doing and achievement. No automation. It feels thrilling to execute complex moves to achieve a fast boss defeat instead of pressing one button and watching a mini cutscene that pauses the game over and over like some other "fast" "platformer" that released later in 2022.

More to the shop is the combat upgrades you can get falling into the same categories as platforming moves.

Natural moves that get added onto Spark which you can use at any time.

And energy moves which are fairly special here as they can change how you fight, these include giving you some extra health, an explosion, extra damage etc. Much more in depth than Spark 2 which is just a big damage attack for getting energy.

And right, energy. Energy is gained through successful combat skills. You can use the finger blaster on weaker enemies or by collecting capsules while in platforming to not remove your speed and while in combat you can gain a lot of energy through just playing successfully and not getting hit. It acts as a risk/reward system where the better the player, the more advanced they get. (There's also a rail change move that can store up energy at the cost of speed.)

My only issue with the combat is that I wish there was more moves and there isn't enough boss patterns as once you learn both you know how to handle that boss perfectly and it no longer feels challenging. It basically becomes a one sided slam rather than a fight. (Although bosses are very fun to speedrun and in challenge mode still manage to make me trash.)

I honestly wish there was more bosses too in place of mid level fight segments in the sub stages. More unique bosses would be fun seeeing as Spark himself is insanely fun to control.

Oh right,

[h2]Levels[/h2]

Large, made for gaining momentum and exploration.

These levels are really really good.

They're large in length with the average run time of a level at least being 2-3 minutes and don't feel long, they feel honestly perfect in length and made to just want to speed run over and over. It's a great balance.

Momentum in the levels feels like a key factor, at the beginning of the game you won't notice everything but as you progress and get more used to Spark and return to start speedrunning levels everything clicks. Every level feels like a playground made to take advantage of and go fast.

And exploration is everywhere, you're constantly shown alternatives routes in front of you and it blends into the levels but simultaneously stands out. It feels meant to be there and gives you reason to explore and explore you can.

Nothing feels restrictive, you have the levels and the moves to perform tricks and skips impossible in any other platformer, these levels are your playground and they feel ever so satisfying to learn and play in.

However my major complaint is the Car, it's not great. A few levels including the opening one use a car which honestly feels fairly bad to play.

It's only mandatory for the opening level and the other car stages you can just run (it's actually faster) but that's the only complaint I can give for levels.

Oh and all the stages of Spark 2 are included for free.

[h2]Music[/h2]

Absolutely phenomenal. Every main stage and boss track is full of a great amount of energy and exhilaration. The standouts here being Tudd and Paul Bethers. With Alpine Carrera and Protest City being 2 of my favourites from each artist respectively.

It's not the usual or what I'd typically expect from something like this but that's what makes it the extra bit better and more special.

Концовка удивила в хорошем смысле. Я бы сравнил ее кое с чем, но даже это сравнение было бы спойлером. Советую не начинать заниматься собирательством сразу, а то задушитесь. Просто проходите уровни. Проходите и бегите)

Но боевка просто вырывает тебя из потока. Очень часто движение вперед просто блокируется, пока ты не заклиришь мобов. Клирить их скучно. То что есть работает нормально, но кол-во хп у мобов должно быть раза в 2 меньше (у боссов норм).
Так же сам поток часто обрывается резким прекращением механики. Например в последнем уровне нужно много раз бегать по стенам. Я зажимаю для этого кнопку и оно, не работает... А потом после респавна оно почему то работает при зажатии этой же кнопки. Дико выбивает.

Eu amo como esse jogo tem uma das viradas mais loucas de plot possível, oq torna uma história genérica em uma realmente especial e divertida, sabendo satirizar a si mesma.
A gameplay desse jogo é quase a mesma coisa do segundo jogo, só que bem melhor e mais refinada, é realmente uma evolução do estilo adventure dos sonics antigos.

Tried it and refunded soon after. It's not a bad game, but not for me. I was hoping for a fast-paced, high speed platformer, which is what the game is. However, some of the mechanics were a bit off for me. One such mechanic is a dash you can charge mid air that halts all momentum. It can feel clunky at times, especially when it gives you a large amount of speed when fully charged and is used as a panic button if you fall off platforms. I get the concept, but I felt it grinded the pace to a halt when using it.

The biggest issue for me is the combat. It's not great, imo, and can slow the pace of the game down when forced in the middle of levels. Bosses are a slog too. It does get better with the different "copy" abilities Spark has, but honestly I don't really wanna do that kind of combat in a high speed platformer setting. I may give this another try some day, but for me I didn't enjoy it. Giving it a thumbs down aside, I would recommend you personally buy the game and see for yourself if it's for you. I think there's a lot of great ideas here too, so if the devs decide on making Spark 4, I'll definitely give that a try.

Great game, really comes alive in the final act when you realize why it's been having you do those side missions. Explosive finale and I'm bummed I've finished the trilogy, but this is definitely a recommend to anyone who wants that unique freedom that comes from games where you run real fast

Can some people just NOT immediately declare every game that is inspired by the Sonic series as "Sonic Adventure 3" or "Sonic but better "? I mean, how hard it is for them to not brand a game as something it's not? It just creates wrong expectations for people who are reading the reviews, making them go in, see something else and then be disappointed with the game.
Spark the Electric Jester 3 is a speed platformer, but if you say it's just like Sonic, you have either not played much of this game or have not played many Sonic games in your life to know how they are; And I'm saying this as an actual Sonic fan. This is a game that is partly a speed platformer, partly a brawler, and a controversially mid finale to the Spark the Electric Jester trilogy in my honest opinion.

[h2]We are past "Ow the edge". This is "LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR" territory.[/h2]
You know what? I'm going to be perfectly honest with you: I strongly believe the developer has went way too far with how serious and dark the story is. Sure, Sonic Frontiers also had a serious story, but not to the point of it getting [b][i]BLEAK[/i][/b] like this game.
The first game was this reference-filled adventure with a simple premise and lots of hit & miss humor. Then came the second game with its sudden inclusion of seriousness and edgy content. And now we have the third game expanding on what the second game introduced and turning the edge meter up to 11. There's a rogue AI that wants to do genocide to make a better world, we have robot racism with their kind being treated horribly like literal slaves, there are clear references to death and mass murder, the protagonist of the second game now has a private military company with a sprawling prison complex for protesters... [b]What the heck am I playing?![/b]
And things get worse as you get closer to the end, as the game drops a ginormous and completely unexpected plot twist on you, ultimately ending with an incredibly demotivating and depressing ending that might possibly ruin the game or even the entire franchise for you. And no, the collectibles have no effect on it. There's only one ending, and it's the bad ending by default.
This is such a drastic U-turn compared to the first game. And if my rant so far has somehow failed to get it through: Yes, I absolutely hate this and have no idea why no one else is talking about it. I started the series expecting a lighthearted adventure, and got handed NieR: Automata with a seasoning of Neon Genesis Evangelion by the end of it. If I knew the story, I probably would have never bought the game or had refunded it immediately as I hate such bleak stories and endings with a burning passion; More so if it has colorful and cute looks. Which is a shame because the game is fun when it actually tries to be a speed platformer.

In terms of game design, Spark the Electric Jester 3 is a massive improvement over the second game. The map now uses a level unlock system based on emblems you get after beating each of them, just like Sonic Adventure series or Sonic Heroes, with each main/story stage needing a specific number of emblems to be accessible. When you unlock the next main level, it also unlocks a bunch of side levels and even missions that further teach you how to utilize the game's mechanics. The levels themselves also give you a variety of objectives to tackle, each letting you collect medals by accomplishing specific tasks, or having a challenge (like time limits) attached to them. The level design is also tremendously better than before, giving you a lot of freedom on how you want to move around and being a joy to sprint through as the direct result of that. Some of them even allow you to drive a vehicle in order to prevent repetitiveness and boredom... although... not completely.
Here's the thing: The game is actually fun, but some stuff get in the way as you progress further. Some of the stages are very long and can bore you while you're in middle of doing them. For example, the main "Protest Prison" level took me nearly 9 minutes on a casual playthrough. Next, the game REALLY wants to get you to try the combat system, so it ramps up the number of mid-level battle encounters as you progress. And... well... the combat is still not good.

[h2]Third time lucky?... Apparently not![/h2]
You know, at this point I think maybe the dev should just either ditch combat entirely and make a beat'em up/brawler spin-off if they really want to use it, or go for a Sonic Unleashed approach because once again, the combat system's implementation is not satisfactory.
To be fair, combat has gotten a lot of improvements. You now have access to launchers (attacks that throw enemies into the air), mid-air combos, combo finishers, additional purchasable moves and even special abilities that use Spark's power meter. On the other hand, not only enemies have access to attacks that cannot be blocked, but they can also grab you. This causes you to pay more attention to combat and watch out for incoming enemy attacks. But despite all of the additions to the combat system, it's still a button masher.
None of these additions have managed to give actual depth to the combat system as none of the encounters in this game give you a reason to be creative. With the exception of times when the game forces you to fight or when you want to go for a medal, there's absolutely no reason to fight with the enemies in a level. And since there's no encouragement to do better in combat (like a simple ranking system tied to achievements) and no proper audiovisual spectacle attached to it, there's literally no reason to do anything other than "hit hard and don't get hit" by just mashing the strong attack button to juggle enemies and parrying whenever necessary.
And the bosses are still not enjoyable either. Sure, the bosses now have introductory and ending cutscenes, but the game does the same thing as the second game when it comes to how you engage with them, only having them happening in closed, circular arenas where both involved parties deal blows to each other. And since the bosses have high amounts of health and just a few attacks to hit you with, they further encourage the use of button mashing instead of being flashy with them and doing long combos.

I am... I just... I don't even know what to say right now. I was actually looking forward to playing this game, because everyone said it's such a fantastic game... and it is! When it's not forcing me into combat encounters, that is. However, no one seems to have an issue with the combat or the story, so a new player would not know about these important aspects of the game. And when people do explain them, they say something I cannot believe! How on Earth is this story "kind-hearted" or "silly"? How is this combat system "lovely"?! Did we even play through the same game?! Apparently not, given how many people think this is superior to anything Sonic Team has ever put out...

A massive improvement compared to the second game with fun gameplay and great music, yet the lackluster combat and the story's overly bleak & depressing plot and ending ruin the experience.

I enjoy playing this game as a Sonic fan. I never got to enjoy Sonic Advanture when I was younger. My first 3D Sonic was Sonic Heroes, and it was.. fun! but janky(on PS2 at least), and the controls were somewhat awful, but the game felt fast when you were Sonic at least.

Years later, I played Sonic Adventure 2 and I found it okay. Nothing too special. But then I played Sonic Adventure on Steam for the first time, and I loved it a lot more than Adventure 2. Why? Because the stages and controls were just.. much more focused on Sonic's speed and movement. It felt good to play as him in those stages where he would just RUN!

Spark 2 and 3 are the first games since Adventure 1 that capture the same feeling of running fast and with amazing control. The feeling of exhilaration when you're sprinting on a narrow stretch of road that winds in various directions all the while you yourself are controlling every step, this game nails it arguably better than Adventure 1 ever did. There's so many stages here, all speed focused, running focused, control focused, it's fantastic and I love it!

That being said, some things are definitely a miss. The story for one, is... silly. The design of Spark himself, also very silly to me. He looks generic, and why a jester? Maybe that's just my nitpick though, but I find his design the worst thing about the game, other than the combat. Which.. I hate the combat here. It slows things down when it's forced, it's annoying, takes too long to kill the enemies, and you have to parry attacks but only some attacks can be parried and those attacks always come with a big delay, making it very difficult to time it right.

The last level, being over 20 minutes long, is pretty.. weird? I think that's the point considering the story, but there's a few sections that make very little sense to navigate, making you think the game is just glitched, but no, it's not. I guess Sonic Unleashed with Eggmanland justified making the last stage over 20 minutes? but even with that game, such a long stage wasn't fun, it was exhausting.

Even so, the moment to moment gameplay is peak Sonic Adventure 1, with plenty of Heroes and Adventure 2 inspiring the stage design. I highly recommend this if you enjoy those classic games and want to feel something new inspired by them.

While some of the worlds can be to open for my taste "Spark The Electric Jester 3" has some of the most fun platforming out there. Unlike its' competitors it never railroads the player. Nor does it fall into the trap of having no actual platforming in the pursuit of speed. [The aforementioned openness is part of what accomplishes this.] Movement in this game is always fun. Spark has a simple to learn yet involved set of ways to traverse the environment. Speaking of which, every world is quite memorable and different.
I can not say I am a fan of the combat. It adds a necessary break up in game play during normal levels and mission. The bosses however I find frustrating, unfun, or both. This is not truly a mark against the game. It could just not be to my taste.

Combat is terrible, my recommendation is to set it on easy so it doesn’t annoy you, but the platforming is excellent- basically what sonic games wish they’d become.

It has everything I could ever want from them, and then some!
High-Octane Platforming that rewards your experience more and more, a lovely combat system that can be fairly easy to get into, but makes you feel like a super hero as you go from a slap fighter to multi-blackbelt owner.
A story that masterfully juggles between light-hearted and cheeky to deep and even sad in a few places and SO. MUCH. MORE. My god, this thing is the ENTIRE PACKAGE for me.
Absolutely goat-tier, this deserves to be up there with the other indie games that reached god hood critically and commercially.
