SpaceChem is a chemistry themed programming puzzle game. But instead of writing lines of code you need to build tracks and place instructions along them, which will be executed by a waldo that moves along these tracks and can grab, move, and drop molecules among other things. The instructions include rotating molecules, removing or adding bonds between atoms, fusing atoms, and many other things. All of this in a limited space so the puzzles are challenging and require good spatial thinking. I think this game is brilliant and it's my favorite by Zachtronics for sure. I have only two gripes, the first is that some of the "boss fight" levels may require a bit of trial and error as the game doesn't provide all the info about how exactly the boss fight works upfront. The second is the last level, which is a pretty huge difficulty spike from the rest of the game on top of having the problem I previously described. Other than that the game's great, very challenging and extremely rewarding, every puzzle in mid to late game feels like it pushes you to the limit of what is possible within the game's systems until you solve it and see the next one. Would recommend (unless you value your peace and sanity).

I launched along with my 2 co scientistic people and we did some science and we dropped our balls at the fourth test. because it was so Sciency that we saved the galaxy.

SpaceChem is the kind of game that never really leaves your head — I'd close my laptop and find myself lying in bed mentally rerouting waldos instead of sleeping. The difficulty is brutal and uncompromising, but that's the point: every solution you build feels genuinely yours, a mess of spaghetti logic that somehow works, and the satisfaction of watching your reactor hum along after hours of failed attempts is unlike anything else in the genre. It's less about eureka moments and more about grinding through iteration after iteration until your contraption finally clicks, which felt frustratingly like real engineering work in the best possible way. Fair warning — if you're a programmer looking to unwind, this is basically a second job, but one you'll keep coming back to at midnight with one more idea to try. If puzzle games are your thing and you don't mind a game that will genuinely humble you, this is absolutely worth it.

Одна из немногих игр, которую я по-настоящему не могу пройти из-за сложности.
Задачки интересные и варьируются от "Ха, да тут надо вот так, вот так и готово, какой я молодец, сейчас еще оптимизирую решение!" до полного ступора. Можно часами искать решение, чтобы потом понять, что итоговый процесс не складывается - но это не отталкивает, а наоборот подстегивает пробовать еще, оптимизировать, продумывать заранее.
Короче, наиграл 100 часов, потому что проходил две трети игры несколько раз. Дальше не получается, но смотреть прохождение не хочется. Когда-нибудь снова вернусь и буду пробовать.

Really tough but really fun. The puzzles always force you to think and (as always with Zachtronics games) if you like to hyperoptimize you'll love it. I should emphasize again that this game is HARD but satisfying.

What sets this game apart (for me) is the instructions on the grid itself - unlike a lot of similar games (by Zachtronics and others, e.g. Human Resource Machine) is that you're fundamentally limited by the board space. Your solutions have to have some level of efficiency and there's no way to brute force your way to a dumb solution... but when you get it, it's beautiful every time.

Ill give this a recomendation, but only cause i love such games.
The biggest problem ill have is its nearly always the same game in a different
"world" And then it cames down to story and possibilities
Opus Magnum offers the most of it and Infinifactory is even 3D.

All ZechGames are worth playing but the limited options killed it for me,
the logic is to bound by the option ill have. i dont like working on such limited
ways and spaces.

An deceptively complex puzzle game that can keep you occupied for thousands of hours if you've got the patience. The difficulty towards the end of the story is brutal, and there's a large library of user-made puzzles from back when the game came out (I've contributed many of these).

Very difficult, but also very rewarding and a great way to exercise your creativity and logic skills. Buy it!

化学式をモチーフにしてはいるが、入力の物体を力業で出力の物体に変換する工場ゲーム。ゲームとしては文句なしに面白いのだが、純粋に操作性に難がありすぎてお勧めは厳しいかなという感想。ゲームとしては本当に面白いだけに残念。

具体的に何がダメかというと、ポチポチ配置していくのがかなりしんどい。工場をつなぐパイプラインの引き直しとかも、つないだ先から一個ずつキャンセルしてやらないといけないとかでやりづらい。ステージごとに一個しか状態を覚えておけないので、うまくいったやつをちょっといじる、みたいなのがやりにくい。

全般的に制約がきついので、爽快に遊べないのもちょっと残念。工場内で物体の切り貼りができるパーツは４つしかないとか、条件分岐の条件は一個しか置けないとか、そもそも全体的に盤面が小さいのでぐちゃぐちゃになりやすいとか。まぁ最終的に色々最適化しようとしたらどうせぐちゃぐちゃにはなるんだけれど…。

という感じで、本題に気持ちよく取り組めないのがとても残念。それも含めて楽しめる人じゃないと厳しいよね。とはいえゲーム自体は面白いので、遊びにくいなぁと思いながらじわじわやろうとは思う。

The UI shows significant age over a decade later, but this is still one of the greatest logic/programming games I've ever played. I appreciate that the game provides statistics from other players, allowing you to challenge yourself, if you like, to develop more efficient or elegant solutions to the puzzles. The story feels a bit thrown together (I'm about two-thirds of the way done at the time of this review) but if you enjoy difficult, logic-driven puzzle games/programming problems, you will love the challenge of SpaceChem.

Clunky and unintuitive UI and tutorial. For the tutorial, you can't close the hint boxes or skip them. For the 2nd tutorial, you have to place the components behind the hint box. Once you get past that, it's not terrible for teaching chemistry and logic.

Conceptually, the game was interesting and if the UI was executed well, it wouldn't be so tedious to click everything to connect things together. If you place start in a corner, if you make a loop, it doesn't autoconnect. This game would be much more fun with a better UI. You should be able to just connect components with drawing through them with your mouse and using an erase tool to change paths. The arrow components just made things incredibly tedious to modify designs. When you drag a component that's already in a circuit, it doesn't move with the connection paths, it just removes it from the path, so to move a component over, you basically have to redo your entire circuit.

If this game's UI/UX is as good as Procreate on the iPad, where you can just intuitively drag everything into place and have many accessibility gestures, it would be far less tedious to play and be much more enjoyable.

I get why some people find appeal in this game. The puzzles can be interesting and it's fun to go for efficiency high scores, but I think the puzzle difficulties are overrated, the real difficulty is in how tedious it is to work with the UI. At this point, grinding Leetcode problems becomes more enjoyable due to more intuitive and relaxing UI.

This is probably the most challenging puzzle game I've ever played. I don't know why it says only 3 hours, that's flat out wrong, but I last played it many years ago so idk. In any case, I still think about it from time to time and how actually challenging it was. If you like solving puzzles, and you want a game that will wring every last bit of juice from your brain to do it, this is it. You will probably give up. And you will probably come back. This is the best puzzle game there is.

I've only just scratched the surface of this game but I had to make an early review to say that while this looked rather off-putting and primitive at first, it is really a brilliant gem of a puzzler that is very much worth getting into if you can become fluent in its language. It is very much a coding and logistics game, but presented in a spatial way that is kind of like watching train routes. There is also a fun sci-fi story. Lots to enjoy!

Если вы прошли эту игру хотя бы на половину, то болезнь Альцгеймера вам не грозит. Это самая сложная игра из известных мне. Чтобы поиграть в нее вашим серым клеточкам придется поднапрячься.

Игра представляет из себя логически-графическую головоломку с программированием. За основу взята химия: атомы, молекулы и связи, образующие химические вещества. С помощью реакторов вам нужно будет выстраивать своеобразные "конвейеры" которые будет разлагать и пересобирать вещества.
В игре присутствует и логика, например из морской воды можно получить воду (H2O) и соль (NaCl), а из атмосферы кислород (O2) и азот (N2).
Постепенно задачи и выстраиваемые схемы становятся все сложнее, а так же добавляются новые инструменты.

В общем, игра очень интересная, но для очень узкого круга людей. А чтобы пройти её, наверно, нужно и вовсе быть гением.

One of the best puzzle / automation / programming-like games I've ever played. A slowly, but very noticeably progressing complexity with new instructions to use and molecules to create.

But the beauty is, even the simplistic starting set of instructions can be used in wildly different designs, with very creative optimizations for cycles (AKA performance), or symbol count (AKA program size), with respective leaderboards. Realizing many of these makes you feel like a genius - very rewarding, like puzzles should be.

A true classic from Zachtronics.

Part way through the game. This game is underrated. The levels are super satisfying when you finally come up with a solution. It gives you the bare minimum of instructions on how to get going, so sometimes you have to play around and figure out what it means. I got hung up on the first defense level personally. I'm currently on the 4th world and the last level took me roughly 30m-1hr; Just problem solving until I figure it out, But once I did, it was like pure joy haha

Its a logic based puzzle game, almost like programming if you have experience there and so far hasn't really gotten repetitive. It's one of those games, where I want to complete it, but sort of sad that it will end eventually. I would love to see a sequel!

This is an irreplaceable entry from Zachtronics, and a viciously challenging and engrossing puzzle game for technical, optimisation-minded players who enjoy the likes of Satisfactory, Factorio, etc. It's a classic, and has the exact right kind of hook where the fundamentals are easy but the way they interact in a full puzzle can be very complex. The soundtrack and (light but engaging) storyline are perfect for a puzzler like this.

The game is a challanging puzzle game, but seriously does not have the quality of life features, not even a step by step or rewind function to make solving the puzzles a signifikant amount of fun. Its more about pain tolerance than it is about intelligence. I like my challanges to be fun.
PS: I had to cheat multiple times, because I just didnt want to try out different things anymore
PPS: On the other hand, if you like that kind of stuff, try it out.

This really is the king of puzzle programming games. I tried it maybe 8 years ago and played for around 10 hours before getting stuck, but I always wanted to come back to it. I decided to try it again in 2025, since my puzzle solving and programming skills have improved a lot since my first attempt. After about 50 hours, I did complete the game, and I'm thrilled I was able to get through it without any guides or help.

There's so much to like about the game. The puzzles are unique and require a tremendous amount of thinking outside the box and the story and setting are weird and fun. As the game progresses you feel like you're doing more than solving a puzzle, but rather you're putting that solved puzzle to work.

I bought this game in 2011 to craft the TF2 cosmetic. It kicked my azz. In 2025 I spent 3 weeks getting my azz kicked again (even when cheating with YouTube hints). This IS the hardest puzzle game EVER! I hated it and I LOVED it! After nearly 15 years, I'm done with it!

A name I relate to fond memeories playing Shenzhen I/O, Exapunks, LastCallBBS, And infinifactory. BUt this game... I found myself strapped to a chair with duct tape wrapped around my entire mouth I couldent think straight then i saw him. Mr Zachtronics. He reminded me of my fond time playing Shenzhen I/O and told me that i must buy this game and if I didnt play more then 2 hours. Dont do it.
