Good Game
Solenars Edge Rebirth is a garbage-tier RPGMaker game, featuring a progression of dozens of characters you can hardly care about going through a more-or-less strictly linear adventure across poorly-drawn maps. Unlike the previous similar game I reviewed, Fateholders of Tetsoidea, Solenars Edge Rebirth is much longer, takes itself far more seriously, and uses a bunch of plugins to customize the game system. Unfortunately, none of those things ends up really being a point in its favor.
First off, the only real positive is the story. It's an... attempt at telling a fantasy epic, and is easily the best part of the game. Unfortunately, it's also poorly-written (in the sense of being full of typographical and grammatical errors) and full of stupid turns of event. A few of them work, but in a better game the story here would be a weak point. "Actually, the first evil king you killed was a fake, go kill the real one." was probably the worst part, in that it still sticks in my mind a few days later.
The gameplay is rather lacking, though I'm not sure whether the bigger cause of this is it letting you put eight characters in your party at once, or basic attacks with high-end weapons getting multiple hits, which makes basic attacks from those characters by far the most effective thing you can do for 90% of the game and also fairly time-wasting, especially once you start hitting 8 or 12 times on a normal attack string with those characters. Both contributed to a gameplay that was either intensely boring grinding-down of permanently stunned foes with too many hit points, or waiting for a twelve-hit dagger combo animation to finish.
As sidenotes: there's a bunch of weird minigame plugins that only come up once, including a QTE-ish minigame, a fishing minigame, and a 2D fighting minigame. Only the fishing minigame is at all useful, and none of them occur more than once in the entire playthrough, since the game is linear and you never return to those locations. It's interesting, but it felt more like a tech demo that was probably downloaded off the internet anyway.
Also, the music is... something. On one hand, the dubstep boss battle music isn't generic, and the random battle track is actually pretty okay and - I believe - composed just for this game. On the other, the dubstep boss battle music is bad and made the overly-long fights worse.
Anyway, yeah. Solenars Edge Rebirth is free, at least, but there's a lot better RPG Maker games out there even for free. Not recommended, as the story isn't anywhere near good enough to make up for the tedious gameplay and terrible map design.
(EDIT: I forgot to mention there's an arena mode unlocked after beating the game. It's pointless and you can 1-turn basically everything using the equipment and money you'll carry over from the end of the game, especially once you give Aionis dual Solenars Edges. Of course, that also provokes the "turns take forever" thing excessively hard, as he swings something like 22 times per basic attack with that setup.)
Classical RPG created on the RPG Maker, but why it should be purchased?
It's great for starting an introduction to the genre, because the game is simple, and there are no difficult and illogical moments. History and the plot are transparent, and it is interesting to observe their progress. The world is very well developed, many NPCs with which you can interact, a lot of side quests that do not force you to grind.
I have one major problem with this game: the inability to backtrack - at all. I went out into the field and encountered enemies that poisoned me, as I hadn't any means of curing it I tried to go back to the recent town only to discover that this is impossible.
I got this game because I had played and enjoyed Solenar's Edge Heroes, which is mostly just arena fights and has no story but fun mechanics.
This game isn't like any other RPG I've played before. First, it starts off with a 4th wall breaking tutorial that makes you think the story will be filled with a lot of humor. However, after completing Balthus Requiem, you'll find out that the plot is actually really dark and deep. With several tragedies affecting the characters, that funny intro will feel like the game is messing with you.

Rich History, Good fighting mechanics. Producer went trough alot of years with this game. Has 15-20 hours gameplay. You will not be dissapointed if you like old school rpg games. try it out atleast.

Ich bin schon immer ein Fan von Rpg-maker-Games , und denke ich kenne mich recht gut in dem Johre aus.
Aber das was Solenars Edge Rebirth bietet ist schon einmahlig und das in den ersten 10 min.
Selten habe ich so viel Liebe zum Detail mit ausgeklügelter Planung und passendem Instinkt gesehen wie hier.
Für ein 1 Mann Team echt Super!

Ich glaube es ist die ausgefallene Kombination, etwas leicht zu verändern mit gutem Sound und guter Story auch wenn ich noch nicht so viel mitbekommen hab fesselt mich das Game ( die Story) sofort.
Die Grafik ist auch mehr als nur stimmig sie ist liebevoll mit viel Fingerspitzengefühl ausgewählt.
Es stimt einfach alles was ich bis jetzt gesehn hab.

I really tried with this game, because it's oddly compelling in a what not to do in a game, yet let me see what happens next way. First of all, the mapping is atrocious, with vast expanses of nothing, but lines of rocks or trees making you zigzag through the vast expanses of nothing. Towns mostly, as far as I played, have houses with no doors or you can't go in--or, as in one town, they are just giant rectangles of nothing. There is nothing to explore; you just follow a linear path. It took me over an hour to get out of the prologue, and I still don't really have a clue what's going on.
You can only save when you come across save crystals, which normally wouldn't be a problem, but they are sparse. I went through tons of dialogue, opened a book, and apparently my character got sucked into some vortex never to be seen again. Game Over. Granted, the book did ask if I wanted to open it, but being curious. . . Unfortunately, that meant going back through about 5 minutes or more of dialogue.
Another point where this save lack became detrimental was after advancing quite a ways past my last save point, I encountered snakes that could poison. The first and only item store I encountered had no remedy for poison, nor did I have anyone in my party who could cure. I had one resurrection item since they were extremely expensive and a few tents, which supposedly allowed you to heal the party outside of battle. I had no option but to let the character die. I decided to use a tent, since I had only the one resurrection item, but nope, the tent only heals the living members--dead member was still dead. My options were to go back to the last save and get more resucitation items or just quit. I decided to just quit.
There are mini games, but the vast majority aren't really explained (other than the self-explanatory hit the right sequence of keys ones, which rather suck), and I don't have a clue what to do with them. The speed at which I've been adding and attaining new party members is almost dizzying, most of whom pop up for a battle and then go away. And as for the battles themselves, it is baffling how characters can one hit an enemy during one battle, then barely make a dent in that enemy if they encounter it again. There is no rationale as to the amount of damage characters do, and it seems that battles actually get more difficult as you level. I don't know if the monsters are leveling with my party or it's just poor settings or a combination.
The story itself might not be so bad--especially if I could manage to stick it out, but there defiitely is some cringe-worthy dialogue. Yet, the game is filled with odd absurdities--baffling and weird things that made me keep going. For one, some of the characters are named things like the "Evil King of the West." Although, the poor king of whatever town in the beginning doesn't even get a castle, but just a set of vast and grand steps leading up to his little cubicle. At one point in the very beginning, you can go into a priest's house. You can uncover a set of stairs that lead down to his dungeon, with cells full of people. Nope, not a clue why they were down there at all.
