Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, or Shogo: MAD, as abbreviated is a very unique first person shooter game that came to the computer gaming market in October of 1998. It offers up an oldschool or "boomer shooter" as we seem to call them nowadays type of experience with the eyecatching stylings inspired by Japanese animations like Patlabor, Gundam, Appleseed or Evangelion. It's an interesting and unique look at an early take on an anime mech game through the lens of a western videogame studio. It is not a game that has aged well and much like its challenged development cycle it is a challenge to get up and running on modern computers. On one hand going back to it presents a mid to bad experience however on the other it is a sort of one of a kind novelty. Like the videogame version of a historical museum piece. Its weird, quirky, clunky but maybe those are the things that make it special.
But also Shogo is one of the most pain in the butt games I've tried to play in recent years. While I did manage to play into credit scroll, I was VERY ready for this one to be over with sooner solely based on its bugs and crashing problems. I know part of this is because the game is old and doesn't get along with modern computers but regardless that makes it REALLY hard to go back to in our current day and age. Also I did follow some user guides on player made patches and setups to hopefully deter these problems, but they still unfortunately persisted.
So here's a shortlist of the sorts of things I encountered. The game crashing, basically constantly. When it would crash it would turn off font smoothing for my entire computer. To turn this back on I'd have to go through the start wizard thing, every time. Sometimes the game wouldn't launch or would crash while launching. Characters floating, spinning and shooting during cutscenes, floors and walls turning black or... multiplying? Sprint button not working? Parts of the model of the gun in the middle of the screen clipping through itself.
The game REALLY needs some help if you want to play it on modern hardware and this plays really heavy into a huge negative. The current rightsholder, I guess the publisher Interplay? Actually RAISED the price of this game back in November for some reason. Literally doubled its price. A 27 year old game, that has been re-released for the digital market for at least 16 years got an arbitrary price DOUBLING in 2025. WHY? They seemingly didn't go through and patch it in any capacity, no restored or added content, no further support, but a price increase. Not just an increase but a complete 100% increase? From 10 to 20 dollars? That really sucks.

Es un juego que guardo con muchísimo cariño, porque fue de los primeros que jugué cuando era niño. Aunque ya pasaron muchos años desde su lanzamiento, sigue teniendo un encanto especial.
Lo que lo hace tan único es su mezcla de acción en primera persona con intensas batallas de mechas, todo acompañado de un marcado estilo anime que le da mucha personalidad. Alternar entre el combate a pie y pilotar tu robot mantiene la experiencia fresca y llena de adrenalina. Además, su atmósfera futurista y la buena banda sonora logran que te metas de lleno en su universo y en su historia de guerra y conspiraciones.
Es verdad que hoy los gráficos y algunas mecánicas se sienten anticuados, pero eso no le quita su esencia. Para mí, volver a Shogo es regresar a uno de esos primeros mundos virtuales que me hicieron amar los videojuegos.
Si te gustan los shooters clásicos, los mechas y las aventuras con vibra anime, este juego es una joyita que vale la pena recordar.
When I was an elementary schooler, Shogo was full of hype within my circle of buddies. The graphics were something else, and the gameplay was also out of this world... at least on ads from game magazines.
I do remember that it was quasi-localized in Korean, my first language (at least for the top-left subtitles part). Alas, at the second mech mission, I was totally lost. Not being able to understand any of spoken English voiceover was another hurdle, and I had no choice to abandon the game there and then.
Fast forward almost two decades later, I stumbled across Shogo again. Curiosity got the best of me.
Compared to Blood and FEAR, all developed by Monolith (Requiescat in Pace), this is really rough on edges: it is necessary to jump all the hoops (meaning that you have to install patches here and there) in order to simply boot up the game.
What faces you in the end is disillusion of sort - that childhood magic, gone. But that is somewhat expected: you cannot judge what is from the 20th century with the 21th century highbrow criteria.
Still, the setting and atmosphere is cool (from the standard of the 20th century) and elementary schooler me would have loved back then. I can see some magic sparks here and there, albeit the presentation itself being rather raw. Only if the developers polished this a tad more, it would have been better.
If you are like me (which I highly doubt), this is worth a play - as a means to respectfully meet again and send off a part of the unconquered part of childhood.
Increasing the prize from a not working game is INSANE.

Whenever i get to speak about a game by Monolith, the first thing i usually say is that they are probably my second-favorite game developer of all time, right behind Looking Glass Studios. Basically, almost every Monolith shooter in existence is a highlight of the genre, if not one of the very best shooters of all time, as is the case with F.E.A.R. and Aliens versus Predator 2. Even if some of their titles are slightly overrated, they usually have at least some very wacky and unique twists in their gameplay, presentation or artstyle that make them special (e. g. No one lives forever). The only Monolith game i ever played that was below average was Tron 2.0, but even that game was at least visually interesting.
But enough gushing over Monolith. With that background, let‘s look at Shogo Mobile Armor Division, one of their very first games. And, as expected, it’s quite fun. The special Monolith knack here is, even though the gameplay doesn‘t differ at all, that you switch between missions on foot and missions in a combat mech, and the whole thing has this entertaining manga anime artstyle to it. Even as early as the late nineties, Monolith games just stood out.
For that time, the sound, voice-acting and music are a lot more than decent and the gameplay is solid run-n-gun. It does feel a bit dated, considering that Half-Life came out a month later, but hey, few games can be on the same level as Half-Life, right? The only sour thing about the presentation might be grafics. Compared to Quake 2 or Unreal, which came out several months earlier, Shogo Mobile Armor Division looks like sh*t, but it’s not so bad that it makes it unplayable and since the game is rather fun, you‘ll get used to the blocky models and general lack of detail in the textures rather quickly. In conclusion, Shogo Mobile Armor Division sits perfectly comfortable among it‘s younger Monolith friends, and if you like the other Monolith games chances are that you‘ll enjoy Shogo, too.
The only truly negative thing about it is that it‘s a pain to get running on modern systems, but there is an excellent guide right here in the guide section to make it happen and it‘s not too complicated and the game really is totally worth it. Nevertheless, i guarantee that once it runs, it runs without stuttering, bugs or glitches, but it WILL crash on a regular basis. It wasn‘t too bad for me, but if you were looking for your main proper no-go reason to not buy this, here it is. Other little flaws, for example that you can‘t reload your weapon manually, that the story gets muddled and confusing half way through and that even on easy difficulty it can be a pretty rough and unforgiving game for people who are not used to 90s shooter gameplay and grew up on regenerating health, are comparatively minor and rather few and far between.
With all that said, Shogo Mobile Armor Division is one of those games that show how little grafics matter as long as the gameplay is fun. It‘s a bit short (a handful of hours maximum on easy difficulty), but it’s straight forward, super fast-paced run-n-gun with satisfying beefy weapons and no frustrating cryptic bs all the way through. If it weren‘t for the completely outdated visuals and the inconvenience to make it run, i‘d have zero problems even giving this a 6/8 maybe. Monolith, you glorious bastards, rest in peace. Now, somebody call Nightdive to give this game the remaster it deserves.

É impossível falar de Shogo sem sentir uma pontada de nostalgia. Na época, meu "PC da Xuxa" mal conseguia rodar essa beleza, era uma guerra para ver cada frame. Mas, felizmente, os tempos mudaram, e hoje eu consigo desfrutar desse jogão como ele merece! O problema? Aquele "pequeno" detalhe: a otimização para sistemas modernos é... inexistente.
Pra quem se aventurar, já aviso: preparar Shogo para rodar hoje é uma Odisseia. Você vai precisar garimpar correções, remapear teclado e mouse para os padrões atuais (adeus, configurações malucas de 1998!). E sim, existem até mods de textura em HD por aí, mas as correções, meu caro, são obrigatórias. Se não instalar, a diversão vira frustração instantânea. É tipo tentar jogar um clássico do arcade sem ficha, não vai rolar!

Uma vez que você transpõe essa barreira inicial de "engenharia reversa do Windows 98", é só alegria! O jogo é curtinho, sim, mas entrega uma diversão que compensa cada minuto gasto configurando. Acreditem se quiser, Shogo envelheceu como um vinho bom, daqueles que só os verdadeiros apreciadores conseguem valorizar. É um tesouro escondido que, se você der a chance, vai te conquistar.
Mas nem tudo são rosas, tive um bug infernal na luta contra o chefe final. Tive que apelar para o bom e velho "quick save" a cada dois segundos para não perder o progresso. Tirando esse pequeno surto do sistema no clímax da batalha, o resto do jogo rodou lisinho, uma maravilha!
Shogo tem uma gameplay fantástica. Controlar um mecha gigante e sair esmagando humanos por aí é uma sensação indescritível de poder! A fluidez nos movimentos, a história que te prende e a diversão garantida são os pilares desse clássico.
Então, se você consegue superar aquele "preconceito" bobo com jogos mais antigos e está disposto a arregaçar as mangas para instalar as correções necessárias, meu amigo, você vai se divertir pra valer. Shogo: Mobile Armor Division é a prova de que nem todo game precisa de gráficos ultra-realistas para ser uma experiência memorável. É um clássico que, para quem sabe dar o valor certo, ainda brilha muito!

Game´s super fun, so far, there hasn't been any issues with the current fixes and so far it's so fun to play.
But I do gotta give credits to those that would have expected the game to be released with fixed resolutions and graphics, at least be able to install the patch of the game, don't be so lazy my god.
Releasing this game at THIS condition? it's not good at all, 7 bucks but at least with the fixes you get an amazing game with EPIC music.

С одной стороны, я словил неслабый такой приступ ностальгии, поскольку искал эту игру более 20 лет. С другой, бл, чтобы поиграть, нужно уверенно потанцевать с бубном, да и то, проблемы это не все решает.
Душевно, отдаёт "теми самыми" шутерами, под конец постоянные переигровки обеспечены.
Вот этот ремейк я бы хотел увидеть, но помянем монолит и серию.

Cheesy humour, mildly intriguing story but major pacing issues. Some ridiculous gank fights towards the end of the game which rely more on luck than skill. Atrocious AI and unusual art direction. However, the game is fairly short, and it was fun. So it's a thumbs up from me

Проходил игру на Windows 11 в 4к, без гайдов из интернета игру "с коробки" вы не запустите, имейте в виду.
Shogo одна из тех ностальгических игр конца 90-ых, когда еще не было шаблонов и понятий как нужно делать First-person shooter(справедливости ради, в Шого можно играть от третьего лица). Думы и Квейки к тому времени всем уже изрядно поднадоели, а тут и на роботе можно побегать, и сюжет какой никакой с возможностью выбора. Проходится игра на одном дыхании, буквально за пару вечеров. Из критичных минусов отмечу только хитсканящих врагов, так что рекомендую играть на сложно не выше нормала, сам мучался на высокой, ладно хоть хватило ума не выбирать сложность безумие.
A somewhat comedic take on the cyberpunk genre by the absolute powerhouse of a studio that is Monolith Productions. Although it’s advertised as a mecha game, it plays much more like a boomer shooter, which is good because that’s exactly why I bought it. It still crashes from time-to-time even after installing all of the fixes, but aside from some incredibly goofy-looking character models and what would now be considered low-resolution textures, it has some stunning visuals for a game released in 1998. I just wish the discounts were better so that more people would consider picking it up. The game hasn’t dipped below $5 since 2020, which is a shame as it only takes three and a half hours to see both endings (Assuming you make a save at the point of no return).

It's clearly an unfinished game, the mecha combat is awkward because both damage inflicted and damage received feel inconsistent; at least the "on foot" combat seems to have been more polished (just to be clear, the levels in mechas and "on foot" are separate, it is not possible to exit the mecha or change mecha in the middle of a level). There are many weapons, but most of them become obsolete very quickly. However, the story is intriguing and has some twists, something rare in a shooter of that time.
Its not a bad game, but obviously is not a hidden gem, and it's a bit expensive for what it offers, but I'm recommending it because there is a Captain Claw easter egg in it.
Claramente é um jogo inacabado, o combate nos mechas é estranho, pois o sistema de danos, tanto o dano infligido quanto o dano recebido, parece inconsistente; ao menos o combate "a pé" parece que teve um maior polimento (que fique claro, existem as fases nos mechas e existem as fases "a pé", não é possível sair de um mecha ou trocar de mecha no meio de uma fase). Também há muitas armas, mas a maioria se torna obsoleta muito rápido. Entretanto, a história é intrigante e tem algumas reviravoltas, coisa rara num jogo de tiro da época. Não tem legendas pra todas as falas, e não tem tradução.
Não é um jogo ruim, mas evidentemente não é bom, não vale a pena pelo preço cobrado, mas estou positivando o game porque existe um easter egg de Capitão Claw nele.
Funniest thing by far is that all the Japanese characters are drawn in anime style except one American guy named "Hank Johnson", who is just a normal person.
The plot is well written for a game that came out in 1998. It's got mechas, it's got plot, it's got Easter eggs, it's got great levels and puzzles which aren't hard and a hell of a lot of battles and gore. It's a great game, and i'm on the lookout for the next Shogo "saga" to continue..
Was such a throw back to when my dad picked up this game to try out. Life got in the way and he didn't pick it up after the second level. 23 years later and I purchased this game again as I don't have a disc drive, and the feelings rushed back to when I was younger.

Auch wenn die Grafik bei Weitem nicht mehr aktuellen Maßstäben entspricht, machen das zügige Gameplay und die schnelle Entwicklung der Geschichte "Shogo: Mobile Armor Division" zu einem sehr kurzweiligen Spiel. Die Missionen, die direkt einem Anime entnommen worden sein könnten, werden abwechselnd zu Fuß oder am Steuer eines Mechs (von denen mehrere zur Auswahl stehen) durchgeführt, beides aus der klassischen Ego-Shooter-Perspektive. Freche Kommentare und ein paar schräge Ideen steigern den Spielspaß.
Wenn ich eine Sache bemängeln möchte, dann die, dass sich die Direktwahltasten für die Waffen nicht ändern lassen, was besonders bei den Waffen mit Zoom etwas lästig ist.
За саму игру однозначно лайк и положительный обзор, но релиз в стиме просто катастрофа. В целом даже если брать версию с гога, то у этой игры практически отсутствует хоть какая-то оптимизация под современные системы. Версия в стиме просто не рабочая, на моём пк она отказалась запускаться , даже после всех возможных манипуляций. Но если взять другую версию или вам повезёт тут, то в интернете полно гайдов как привести игру в чувства, но проблем много, тут нужен и фикс на мышь, на звук иначе будете играть без саундтрека , а он тут очень хорош. Фиксы на графон, даже мод на ультраширокие мониторы есть и работает просто отлично. Ну, а что по игре, да всё просто на высшем, если учесть сколько игре лет, не плохой сюжет, отличный арт, визуал конечно устарел, но это тут не главное, главное, это два разных геймплея, у вас тут есть мех и пол игры посвещенно именно ему, странно но он даже трансформируется, хотя в игре это и не нужно. Музыка шикарная, после перепрохождения , несколько треков отправилось в плейлист. В общем если не боитесь трудностей с запуском, максимальные рекомендации к прохождении данного проекта, как-никак монолит делали, а шутаны у них отменные. Да и цена по большей части как у банки газировки. Эх ей бы ремастер, мечты мечты

When I was 10 I won some child competition. You could chose between Shogo and StarCraft. I have chosen Shogo, and never rly regreat it. I gave me tons of fun. Great game, and amazing music. Bought it again just to have it again :)
Comes from an era of PC gaming in my life that is extremely nostalgic as this was some of my 1st ever true 3D gaming. Picked this up both on Steam and GOG. Downside is trying to get the damned thing to work on modern hardware. Look at the community tab for the tutorial on how to get it running after a couple download it works flawlessly.

Спустя пролетевший десяток лет, наиграв в ней немало часов ещё до получения в стиме, эту игру я вам категорически рекомендую, кому нравятся подобные шутаны конца 90-х.
Придётся конечно помучаться с накатыванием фиксов и старой локализации, но по крайней мере от геймплея кайф можно получить, и от музыки в том числе (главная тема игры до сих пор my beloved <3<3<3).

The graphical presentation is not very good though, especially the character models, and considering that Unreal and Half-Life came out the same year.
It is a shame though, the art is spectacular and I would love to have seen it released a few years later and on a more capable engine.

The weapon variety is quite nice.
There is a miserable difficulty gap between Normal and Hard: Normal is a bit too easy but Hard is actually impossible (final boss insta-kills you).
Hard mode is reminiscent of Halo 2 LASO, where you can be one-shot by peeking around a corner.
I played through nearly the whole game on Hard and it is quite painfully fun, but I had to use God-mode at the end.
Story is alright but not presented very well, I'm not a big fan of these intermission text scrolls.
Dialogue is very cheesy but kind of cosy.
It's very nice how you can break nearly any prop.
The game does not fully work without Windows 98 compatibility mode. I didn't know how to fix it and I played throughout the game with no in-game music and I wish I hadn't.
It has an immense amount of soul, and that is important in a game. I like it...

I loved this game as a kid but after buying a steam copy tonight it's crashed 5 times in 39 minutes and it's made all text in steam and my internet browser look extremely chunky and pixellated to the point that it's difficult to read. It's bad enough for a game to not work, but if it's going to break things beyond the game it shouldn't even be in the store. Definitely avoid.

This is where I wished steam had a meh choice because this is just ok though it does have flashes of greatness sometimes and considering the development of this game as a Microsoft published title showing DirectEngine which became LithTech and interviews with devs saying the game was FAR more ambitious in development then in the final game. This might as well be a polished up vertical slice of what could have been held back by technical limitations
As a latecomer to this game, I can't help but feel let down by this blast from the past. While its mecha-filled universe initially intrigued me, the outdated graphics and clunky controls quickly soured the experience. The promise of high-octane action falls flat due to repetitive gameplay and uninspired level design. Important note: This only gets a thumbs up because it runs perfectly on Steam Deck so far. If you are using a PC...then switch the review to a massive thumbs down.
Shogo...one of the greatest shooter games of all time. Sure it is rough around the edges, but it is a complete blast to play.
However, this game is now unplayable. This isn't a Steam issue...because I also have the pc version, and it has the same issues. The game will have problems loading, graphical issues, freezing in the menu, and just general crashing.
You can play it but will run into issues and will have to keep saving and reloading to proceed. Its a shame though....because the game is so good. You can get it working with tinkering, but it will take a lot of work. (For me the patches made the game run worse.)

De los más respetables títulos que sacó Monolith Productions junto a la saga NOLF y FEAR.
Un FPS frenético con Mechas y un ingrediente clave como el animé. Es mi juego favorito dentro del género y de su generación; es decir, es mi favorito dentro de los FPS de los años 90.
Buena historia, jugabilidad más que aceptable, buen arsenal de armas, buenas gráficas para su época.
Pero hablando más precisamente en el día de hoy, no está demás aclarar que en sistemas operativos modernos como Windows 10 en adelante, hay que hacer ajustes por fuera de lo que es Steam, de otro modo, no corre, o lo hace pero con muchísima dificultad, haciendo que sea injugable.
Por mi parte apliqué parches como el de dgvodoo y algún override que encontré por ahí en pcgamingwiki.
No me quedó tan bien adaptado como la versión retail o la versión GOG, pero igualmente es jugable; es que la interfaz de Steam, a pesar de tenerla desactivada, hace lo suyo, haciendo que tenga un poco más de dificultad para arrancar; las presentaciones no se muestran y el menú se glitchea a la primera de cambio, hay que iniciar un juego y luego volver a cargar. Indispensable guardar partidas conforme vas avanzando.
En fin, sacando sus nanitas al costado por no adaptarse correctamente a SOs modernos, es buen juego.
Qué bien haría Nightdive si hace un remake de este título, ya que no creo que esté en los planes de Monolith hacer algo con él. Nunca sacaron una secuela, las expansiones que iban a lanzar se cancelaron. Solamente hicieron cameos en distintos juegos y ahí se quedó la cosa. Lástima, porque tiene un gran potencial.

Most stable and bug free monolith game
This game is beyond fun, relatively short but still a lot of fun. Fast paced and somewhat like Half Life if you engage the Friendly NPC's with hostility... I own this game from 1998, and still own the CD from when I bought it. If you get the settings just right it'll run like it should and look great for a 26 year old game.. 3DFX days were sure fun!

A fun game to see how the LithTech engine started. It does have some issues that can be fixed with some fan patches, but overall ran well on my machine.
Story has some odd progression, but it was ultimately fun for me. Only really recommend if you like old shooters.
Если коротко: игра на пару раз, на самом деле. Одного уровня с Blood 2 (которую я несколько раз еще упомяну). Выделяет ее из всех прочих шутанов лишь меха-аниме тематика. Но потенциал нераскрыт. Пусть ностальгические очки людей, которые написали позитивные отзывы, вас не сбивают с толку. Игру явно делали наспех, т.к. рядом строгали Blood 2. Уровни однообразные без какого-либо развития. Карты уровней нет, поэтому ориентируешься на память. А это самое бесящее в старых шутерах.
Если поподробнее:
Я из тех, кто знал о существовании игры почти с самого ее релиза, но так и не прошел ее до недавнего времени.
Не рекомендую точно из-за упоротого ИИ (прямо как в Blood 2) - враг, выбегая из-за угла, стреляет через 0,000001 секунды после того, как вас увидел. Т.е. шансы выжить, будучи покоцанным, очень низкие. Из-за этого приходится жать F6 после каждого убийства. А если у вас 200 здоровья и 200 брони, то ИИ попадет, скорее всего, в голову и у вас будет 50 здоровья и 20 брони. Потенциал киношных перестрелок был, конечно, больше в Blood 2 (особенно когда в музей заваливаешься). Сюжет типичен для шутанов 90-х с приколами в духе "открыть дверь и быть ей придавленным насмерть" и вот эти вечные "пролезь по вентиляции" и "побегай по карте в поисках того, не знаю чего". Благо можно на F1 подсмотреть детали текущего задания, но из-за местами неправильной локализации, сбиваешься с курса.
В остальном игра для своего времени вполне свежо выглядела с попыткой изобразить анимешную меха-драму. С учетом того, сколько пришлось впихнуть в игру (и, по ходу, параллельно пилить Blood 2, на которую и так выделили мало времени. На Shogo MAD, видимо, тоже дали не так много времени), то тему роботов не особо раскрыли. Но приятно иметь возможность трансформироваться в тачку и уворачиваться в перестрелках - в игре даже включили вид от третьего лица, чтобы можно было посмотреть на робота и процесс трансформации. Заморочились над выбором роботов, над оружием для роботов, которое толком не успел обкатать, потому что из 6 часов игры я больше половины бегал человечком. Есть критические попадания, которыми тоже особо не воспользуешься, потому что боты слишком метко стреляют и в итоге стреляешь лишь бы попасть. И что за лазерная пушка на полэкрана, я так и не понял. Взять - я ее взял, но выбрать нельзя.
В конце даже намек на продолжение, которого не случилось (хотя есть технодемка с обновленным движком с намеком на вторую часть). Игре не нужен ремастер - ей нужен полноценный ремейк, в котором раскроют тему роботов, побольше персонажей и вселенную в целом, допиленную боевку и так далее.

This has been my first time playing through this game and I am absolutely loving this. You play through combat in and out of your mech, and it controls well once you make a few adjustments. It runs just fine for me without installing anything additional. Game can be hard but I love a challenge. I strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys classic fps games.
its my first pc game i bought with septerra core wheni was like 8 years old for 2 bucks, nostalgia does hit hard. games not that hard music slaps tho and i still dont know what the story is after all these years. all i know is they all fight FOR GABRIEL!

After more than a full days shift worth of work i got it running. turns out my mouse refresh rate not being 200 ( the lowest setting possible in its software) was what took four hours of the game crashing within a minute or two every time while working on the key bindings. I saw more than one comment in different places . Too much trouble shooting for the average person in my opinion but if you've got the patience. heavily nostalgic. I do'nt remember and hate that the wiener protagonist is named after Toshiro Mifune. Sanjuro and Yojimbo are far and above anime hair guy. They should have just named him Thunderhead.
as good as a gem this is from my childhood, the fact its sold in a state that doesn't even run is insane. You have to download patches and fixes from vauuge forums to even have a shot of running it and even after all that it still doesn't run. and for 10$ to

Что касается самой игры, то тут без сомнения можно сказать одно: прежние Monolith – мастера делать уникальные и неповторимые игры, которые надолго оседают в памяти, и к которым всё время хочется возвращаться!
SHOGO MAD, безусловно, самая уникальная игра данной студии: меха-шутер в аниме стилистике с приколами, многочисленными отсылками (на аниме, в том числе) и той самой [url=https://youtu.be/AoK0SzNsR2I] музыкальной темой[/url]. Просто напомню, что до Shogo эти же ребята выпустили Blood, а позже - F.E.A.R. и Condemned, которые назвать яркими, задорными язык не повернется, и с которыми, к слову, Shogo роднит не только принадлежность к жанру FPS и одна студия-разработчик, но и ещё [spoiler][i]общая вселенная[/i][/spoiler]. Но это тема для отдельного разговора.
Играть в Shogo определённо весело! Стрельба очень динамичная, противники бросают вызов и смачно разлетаются на кровавые ошмётки или куски металла. Сюжет по-анимешному банален, а персонажи также плоски, но это скорее задумка, нежели недоработка. Музыка местами бодрая, местами мрачная, местами её нет совсем (может это какой-то баг, не знаю). Дизайн уровней типичен для игр того времени: коридоры и просторные помещения с рубильниками и непесями, которые просят их «не трогать». Впрочем, если и трогать, то игра за это никак не штрафует, так что можно спокойно отыгрывать Чувака из Postal. В этом игроку помогает традиционно большой арсенал, состоящий из самых различных средств аннигиляции супостатов, от ножа и пистолетов акимбо (традиционная для игр Monolith фишка) до ручной ядерной пушки и игрушки-пищалки (нет, серьёзно). А ещё, у игры две концовки, что делает её немного реиграбельной.
В общем, сыграть в Shogo однозначно имеет смысл, особенно если вы любитель ретро-гейминга и ищете для себя что-то уникальное из прошедшей эпохи, что ещё не пробовали. Здесь стоило бы прогнать стандартную тираду о том, как жалко, что игра провалилась, оставшись без сиквела и всё такое. Но учитывая, какими у Monolith обычно получались сиквелы их лучших игр, то может оно и хорошо. Вспомним хотя бы F.E.A.R. 2 и Condemned 2, которые, объективно, неплохи сами по себе, но вот как продолжения – весьма сомнительны. Blood 2 давайте вспоминать не будем...

This is probably not going to be an objective, unbiased review, because Shogo: MAD happens to appeal to at least three demographic groups I am a member of: weeaboos, FPS gamers and boomers... errr, I mean 90s kids.
It's a great game, provided that you are willing to treat it as a product of its time: the late 90s.
If you are some zoomer born after 2000, and pick this game up in 2022 or any year later, then you're going to be met with horribly dated graphics and janky mechanics. However, if you are willing overlook the graphics, the 90s jank, then you will actually end up uncovering a hidden gem.
Shogo: MAD is not only a fine game, but a very innovative one - as far as I'm aware, the only FPS that allows you to play both as a human being, and as a giant mecha. That's right, you spend around half of the game piloting a giant mecha, so this game is 100% recommended to Gundam fans.
Now, I have to mention it again: this game is a product of its time, very 90s, so there's no reloading, no health regeneration, level design is downright labyrthian and you will be backtracking A LOT, the AI is ridiculously easy to defeat (tho, the game's creators seem to have been self-aware of it, hence the unfair placement of enemies in corridors, corners, behind doors).
Despite being made by Americans, it has a very anime feel to it, with most characters having Japanese-sounding names, the protagonist sounding straight-up like your typical 90s anime protagonist, etc.
It makes me very sad, that the Shogo franchise did not blossom into an entire saga - that's right, sequels were planend for this game, but unfortunately, as of 2022, none were produced so far.
It's a nice game, definitely worthy of playing, and also worthy of a remaster (if you are a game developer, or the original developer, and reading this by some chance)

I had loads of fun when the game came out in 98' and still is fun to this date I had to buy it again when I saw it came out on steam but in my opinion this game can use a some love from the developers in the form of a remaster or remake.
Great Game, fun and hilarious dialogue. Surprisingly runs well on Steam Deck if you set the right controls.
Nothing really changed from 1998, still a solid shooter. There are some steam related problems like having to disable steam overlay and controller to prevent the game from chugging, and game related problems like controls being really archaic by today standards, but overall still enjoyable.
STILL WAITING FOR A SEQUEL, MONOLITH!
Note: This game was a ♥♥♥♥♥ to run on modern hardware, and it occasionally crashes from time to time.
With that being said, this is one of the most unique first-person shooters I've ever played because of its anime mecha-inspired aesthetics. I grew up playing Half-Life and completely missed this one (this game was released around the same time as HL), but after playing it, I can appreciate that this was one of the early examples of story-driven FPS games.
Gameplay is split into two types: one is on-foot, and the other sees you controlling a giant mech (it's like Gundam but in FPS).
The game may feel unpolished and difficult (you can score critical hits on enemies...but they can too which results in unfair one-shot kills), but overall it was incredibly fun from beginning to end. Fans of FPS games should give definitely give Shogo a go.

A pesar de ser un dolor de bocho tener que configurar este viejísimo juego para Windows 10/11 etc, Shogo es un gran juego con buena jugabilidad y gráficos increíbles para su época. La historia es flexible y te va llevando y conociendo el mundo ficticio poco a poco. En algunas cosas envejeció mal pero en la mayoría sigue siendo un buen exponente de su época.
Recomendado, pero tengan paciencia para configurarlo para que funciona correctamente.
Me acuerdo haberme quebrado la clavicula, cuando me pusieron el yeso me acordaba de los mecas de este juego. 10/10 Podrian hacer un remake
No se puede ser objetivo con este juego. Forma parte del mundo PC de los 90 y de nuestra adolescencia. Tiene una buena historia, traiciones, accion, humor y Mechas estilo manga!!
