Storyline

On the way there, he just avoids running over a fleeing girl who then blacks out. Brian takes her to the hospital and finds out that her name is Gina Timmins and that she witnessed a Mafia murder. He saves her from the killers, but now he also has to run away.

I love point and click games, but this is terrible. The main character is dull, but the worse thing is the complete lack of puzzle logic. Areas are too big, there are too many similar/pointless items, and getting through most puzzles is more luck than logic. I've not played a worse P&C game. I love to finish every game I play, but I've tried this twice and ran out of patience. Terrible.

Un jeu qui m'avait beaucoup marqué à l'époque de sa sortie il y a 23 ans (ouille, ça pique !)
En effet, à l'époque je n'étais pas fan des point and click mais je m'étais laissé tenter par celui là et, malgré quelques énigmes particulièrement tordues, j'avais bien aimé et il m'a réconcilié avec ce genre de jeux.

L'histoire est fun, les personnages attachants et bien barrés et, 23 ans après (ça pique toujours) il est toujours regardable et n'a pas trop vieilli

It's fairly ok start for series. Art style especially for the era is really nice and I appreciated voice overs, music etc. Plot specially from the start is very interesting. Bit eccentric towards the end, but overall I'd say good.

But game does have flaws. It's the moon logic and before I forget to mention. If you play this, you need to look and interact with items, obviously, but if it doesn't work, you need to talk to people or get another item and all of the sudden you can interact with something that wasn't possible few minutes ago. Like for instance there is museum at one chapter. I roamed around and in one room I meticulously inspected everything there was and protagonist answered like "Hmmm there isn't anything interesting there". Then later near chapters end you need to do seemingly trivial thing and I struggled and pixel hunted every screen and forfeited and thought screw this, let's see walkthrough. Turned out that "there isn't anything interesting" now had turn into roughly "Oh nice, there is X inside". Like what the hell? This is the most annoying thing in adventure game and RRA delivers on this front, you REALLY need to be aware of this bullshittery. Plus there are couple insanely annoying characters.

It's not even close to flawless title and as mentioned I definitely needed walkthrough. But overall quite good. Not quite as good as ie. Secret Files series start imho.

Maybe 7.5 - 8 out of 10. Way better than sequel "Dream of the turtle" no one should touch.

Btw. Played through this on Linux and didn't encounter any issues at all.

Решил подсесть на иглу ностальгии — и вначале всё действительно сработало. Та самая рисованная графика, музыка, лёгкая авантюрная атмосфера двухтысячных. Первые главы проходятся бодро: диалоги местами наивные, но с шармом, персонажи карикатурные, сюжет абсурдный, но в духе старых квестов.

А потом наступает четвёртая глава — и начинается чистый пиксель-хантинг. Найди крошечную щётку, которая спрятана за дверью так, что её почти не видно. Камера статичная, подсветки активных зон нет, и ты просто методично водишь мышкой по экрану в надежде, что курсор где-то изменится. В какой-то момент это перестаёт быть «разгадкой загадки» и превращается в борьбу с интерфейсом.

Логика задач. Главный герой, например, не хочет копаться в грязи. Нужно выйти на террасу и сбросить цветочный горшок вниз, чтобы… изменить ситуацию. В такие моменты понимаешь, что логика тут работает по принципу «потому что так задумано», а не «потому что это естественно».

Заскриптованность тоже даёт о себе знать. Одни предметы герой подбирает с формулировкой «авось пригодится», другие — только после определённого диалога или скрипта. Листья табака в кладовке — даже не подумает взять. Фонендоскоп из чемоданчика — та же история.

В итоге пришлось открыть прохождение. И вот тут случился флэшбек: в пятой главе я вдруг вспомнил, что в детстве забросил игру именно на четвёртой. Тогда не было ни гайдов, ни подсказок под рукой. Просто упёрся — и всё. Память хитрая штука: мозг оставил приятные ощущения от начала, но заботливо стёр раздражение от середины.

И ещё один момент, который сейчас бросается в глаза сильнее, чем раньше — главный герой. Он оказался довольно неприятным типом. Поджёг больницу, испортил древний артефакт Майя, напоил реставраторшу каким-то сомнительным «кофе», по его вине гибнут люди (уборщик, друг с музея) — и всё это подаётся как весёлое приключение. Такое себе приключение Шурика.

В итоге Runaway работает как капсула времени. Атмосфера и стиль до сих пор цепляют, но механики и логика загадок местами безжалостно устарели. Ностальгия есть — но теперь она с привкусом осознания, что в детстве терпения было больше, а требований к дизайну — меньше.

If I ever have to pick one single genre as my favorite, it'll be point-and-click adventures. There's nothing more cozy in the world than sitting in a dark room with some ice cream and coffee, trying to figure out what to do next in order to progress. Unfortunately, there was also a major problem with the genre. I know, I know; you've heard this story, like, a million times before. Bear with me, as it's really important to mention. I'll try to keep it short. Yes, it was the Internet.

While back in the 80s it was quite easy to pull an all-nighter in order to finally learn what happened next to our man Roger Wilco, once the Internet started to be affordable and at least one kid in class had access to all the walkthroughs out there, it was an obvious fun killer. Which was rather sad, since it was also the time when the genre peaked with games like Monkey Island 2, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Broken Sword, and others. Still, despite those games being absolutely fantastic, investing in such projects started to be a pretty bad idea. I mean, come on. What's the purpose of an AAA project that can be solved in only a few hours? Doug TenNapel's The Neverhood was a nice example of that. It was a brilliant game that involved claymation, a unique setting, and a one-of-a-kind soundtrack by Terry Scott Taylor. The game was a bloody art. Guess what happened with it? You guessed it! It flopped. It's not like we stopped getting major games at that point; The Longest Journey, for example, did pretty well. It sold 200,000+ copies in about three years (which was quite good for a point-and-click title). How many copies did, say, The Sims sell, though? Almost four million. In just a year. Like I said, the point-and-click genre was in agony. It was pretty obvious that point-and-click games wouldn't last long. Publishers felt that way, the press felt that way, the audience felt that way... Guess who didn't? Some devoted devs. And that, my friends, is finally the time for us to start talking about our game of the day—Runaway: A Road Adventure.

Runaway was released in 2001. And as long as we don't count Humongous Entertainment, who were still doing their kid-oriented thing, the genre was considered dead and only small European (also, post-soviet) companies were still making such games. Which were ugly, clunky, and unpleasant about 90% of the time. And technically? Runaway was one of such games too. Technically. See, while being developed by the Spanish company Pendulo Studios (“pendulo” means “pendulum”), it didn't feel cheap. I mean, come on. Thanks to how point-and-click games don't require complicated gameplay mechanics, balancing, or other things, those are pretty easy to make. Because of that, it was often like, “Don't know what to make? Make a point-and-click adventure!” Runaway wasn't like that. If anything, it was exactly the opposite of that.

Pendulo cared. Like, for real. The guys loved the genre and wanted to make something real. And naturally, lots of people who were tired of all those clunky games like The Mystery of the Druids and Zero Critical were ready to welcome it. Did Runaway disappoint? Not at all! Heavily inspired by all sorts of movies (from Tarantino's Pulp Fiction to Stephan Elliott's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), it was... quite a trip, really. It had 3 CDs of content (yes, those nasty things were still a thing); there were lots of solid (not perfect, but high quality) animations, an exclusive song (performed by Spanish band Liquor), six story chapters, etc. The storytelling was also unorthodox for this kind of entertainment (one of the many problems with the genre was that devs didn't even try thinking outside the box)... It was a thing. Runaway sold well (somewhere on The Longest Journey level) and together with April Ryan's game and Benoît Sokal's Syberia, it's considered one of the games that helped to halt the genre's decline. Was it perfect, though? Well... about that.

To be completely honest with you, I kind of regretted revisiting this game many years later. See, Runaway was one of those things that shined in the moment but somehow didn't age that well. Back in the day? Seeing a certain amount of quality was more than enough. And it's still there. The game does have that certain aftertaste we all want from such stuff. You can feel Broken Sword, you can feel LucasArts... But at the same time... let's just say a certain amount of clunkiness is still there too.

Take the puzzles, for example. Sometimes, those are OK—quite intuitive, etc. But sometimes? Sometimes it's, “[i]How in the name of rotten Cthulhu's butt was I supposed to guess THAT?![/i]” Items that do nothing and some crazy pixel hunting are included. Don't get me wrong, though; I'm one of those boomers who feel heavily against so-called “hotspot highlighting.” That certain thing where you press a button and instantly see all the active elements on screen. You know, the one that's included in, like, every single point-and-click adventure nowadays (I believe it was Simon the Sorcerer II: The Lion, the Wizard and the Wardrobe that was introduced said feature to us in 1995). Personally? Not a fan. I do believe that a certain amount of pixel hunting is important in order for the player to get dopamine. Without it, the game starts to feel more like a chore. Runaway, on the other hand? Even if you feel like me, it [i]will[/i] make you want that “press Tab to win” thingy. The game also makes certain objects reusable, with absolutely no hints or indications about where exactly it wants you to check a certain container again. Our character (Brian Basco, who totally isn't “We've got George Stobbart at home,” lol) says, “there's nothing else interesting in there,” and then boom! There's suddenly a new item in there. Ridiculous.

Talking about the characters, by the way: I can't say those are terrible (I've seen much, [i]much[/i] worse in the genre), but at the same time, they are anything but iconic. The whole thing screams Broken Sword, except our lady here is a cringey damsel in distress who does nothing but be “sexy” and ask for help. [i]Eugh[/i]. Broken Sword's Nicole was a [i]person[/i]. Gina Timmins? She's nobody. Again, Runaway did fine and it's [i]that[/i] kind of a story; just... make sure not to expect too much.

And that's exactly the problem, I think. When you look back at Runaway from years later (I'm writing this a whopping 25 years since the initial release, and my monitor doesn't even support its default resolution, so I needed to use dgVoodoo 2), it feels like nothing special. Somewhat poor, even (especially since it still has some bugs and, in my case, for example, the game skipped a pretty big portion of puzzles just because I tried to leave the area). Lots of puzzles are questionable, some of the pixel hunting is ridiculous... I already mentioned all that. In other words, while looking at everything good that Steam has to offer, I'm... not even sure I can recommend it. Not in a “[i]Dude! Forget about everything else and go play this one![/i]” way, at least.

Still, it's very important for us to remember that Runaway was one of those games that helped to save the genre back in the early 2000s. And it deserves lots of respect for that. And even with all that aside? It's still quite solid. A bit too old-school for a modern audience (again, some crazy pixel hunting), a bit too clunky, and it doesn't look nearly as good as it did in its moment; but still, it's totally playable. Since point-and-click games are anything but long (you can beat Runaway in about four hours if you use a walkthrough or ask generative AI for help), there's always a demand for new ones, so... yeah. Runaway is worth playing. It totally is. Just make sure not to expect too much. It wasn't nearly as good as some of us probably remember.

Я играла в эту игру в далеком детстве, не в 2002 конечно как она вышла, но около того. Я даже не вспомню сколько мне было, но куплена она была еще в те далекие времена когда она была на трех обычных дисках. Было мне лет 10-12 наверное. И для того времени игра была просто замечательная. Это не те укажи и тыкни где 12 вариантов выбора - а (по механике) простой квест. Есть предмет, наведя на него ты можешь сделать или то, или это. Не кучу вариаций. Для моего возраста (учитывая что тогда еще не было доступа к прохождениям или наличия у меня интернета) игра была не сильно сложной. Задачи вполне логичные. По крайне мере можно додуматься. Не считая места с Сатурном и его дурацким - этот камень не достаточно хорош для меня, сделай что-нибудь еще. Я прошерстила вдоль и поперек все экраны и не нашла предмет, без которого не смогла пройти ее в детстве. Сейчас она в библиотеке потому что - ну в добрую память, как нибудь прогнать разочек.
В то время конечно и анимация и сами сцены это было что-то очень красивое. Если вы вообще знаете графон тех лет.
Конечно как квест я бы советовала, но как доброе напоминание. Для современного искушенного зрителя он будет выглядеть старомодно, но ценители оценят.

Я помню, какие тут ужасные анимации открывания рта в диалогах, но непропускаемые ролики совершенно забыл. Кроме того, многие головоломки просто абсурдны. А необходимость таскать в масленке воду через несколько экранов туда-сюда и так раз пять - это просто издевательство. Но в целом квест симпатичный, пускай и несколько глупый. Пусть будет "да".

Un juego de infancia que para la epoca en la que salio hizo las cosas bien, tiene una buena historia original y mantiene el misterio y el humor, una jugabilidad simple para que no sea de ensayo y error aburrido y un motor grafico que no es del todo 3D pero que esta bien mostrando lo que debe. Fun little Lucasarts style adventure. Took a little bit of investigating to get it to run properly. It would be nice if the game install was packaged with a graphics wrapper like dgVoodoo to spare you the hassle but whatever, at least a fix does exist.

I mostly enjoyed the puzzles but Runaway suffers a bit in the latter half from some reeeeaally convoluted and unexpected solutions that I absolutely needed a guide for. For example. A wrench you need falls into a muddy horse trough from a second story balcony. Your character refuses to stick his hand into it to get the wrench so what do you need to do? Obviously not kick the trough over, or find gloves, or tongs. What you have to do is find a flowerpot, and then drop that from the balcony also so it lands in the trough and splashes the wrench out of it. Obvious, huh? Well naturally your character can pick it up now, even though it's still covered in mud.

The convoluted puzzles though I could live with I think because there's not -that- many of them per chapter, but the real problem then is that the game also makes it really hard to find objects you need. You don't have modern adventure game conveniences like hotspots to highlight interactives so you have to scour scenes by eye, but objects blend REALLY well into the background and are often indistinguishable from non interactives. Some of them are also tiny, and their hitboxes seemingly smaller. I had to keep a guide handy to point me at selectable objects that I had no idea were there because their hitbox barely registered under my cursor.

I feel like Runaway is really deserving of a soft remaster and it wouldn't take much to make it solid. Just fix the resolution and graphics issues for modern platforms, make saving the game less clunky, and add a hotspot button. That's really all it needs.

Par contre, ce jeu n'est pas comme la plupart. Il faut souvent revenir au même endroit, Les choses changent. On trouve de nouveaux objets surtout dans les sacs, armoires, coffres, etc. D4autres qui n'était que là deviennent tout à coup ramasable.
C'est un peu perturbant voir ennuyeux quand on a l'habitude de pouvoir tout ramasser de suite.

Algunas decisiones a la hora de progresar o por la resolución de algún puzle pueden resultar poco intuitivas, pero por lo general es muy satisfactorio y avanza a buen ritmo. Una buena aventura que merece tener un hueco entre los clásicos del género.

Brian Basco es un joven neoyorquino de veintitrés años que acaba de terminar la carrera de Física y al que le ofrecen la oportunidad de realizar un doctorado en la universidad de Berkeley. Pero en camino a California se topa accidentalmente con Gina quien parece huir de alguien. Querer ayudar a la pobre chica cambiará su vida para siempre.

Algunas de las situaciones son un poco inverosímiles y la transición de una a otra no siempre resulta natural, pero es entretenido y los diálogos están bien escritos. Algo que resulta curioso a la par que un tanto escandaloso es que un juego de factura española no venga en español debido a un tema de licencias, sólo viene en inglés y francés. Lo cierto es que ha aguantado el paso del tiempo de manera sobresaliente. Pese al formato 4:3, los fondos 2D están dibujados a mano y cuentan con montones de detalles y una buena resolución. Y los personajes, en 3D, están renderizados mediante [i]cel-shading[/i] lo que hace que se fusionen perfectamente con los fondos y apenas acucien el paso del tiempo. Si no fuera por algunas simples animaciones faciales al ver a los personajes de cerca, nadie diría que el título tiene más de dos décadas.

Pese a la falta de algún tipo de tutorial, el control es simple e intuitivo. Con el puntero del ratón observaremos el entorno e indicaremos dónde queremos mover al protagonista o con qué queremos interactuar mediante el botón izquierdo. El botón derecho alterna entre observar un elemento o personaje e interactuar con él, ya sea hablar, recoger, utilizar, etcétera. En la parte superior de la pantalla tendremos acceso al inventario y las opciones, pero también podremos acceder mediante el teclado con Tab y Esc respectivamente.

En cuanto a los puzles, le veo sus más y sus menos. No sería hasta más adelante que algunos de estos juegos incluyeran la opción de pulsar una tecla para ver con qué podemos interactuar o algún tipo de ayuda o pistas. Por ello, tiene algunas zonas en las que habremos de mover el puntero del ratón pixel por pixel para estar seguros de que no nos dejamos nada. Peor es algunos puzles poco coherentes, por suerte no muchos, o cuando está claro qué hemos de hacer pero el juego no nos deja porque hay que hablar con alguien u observar algo antes de poder hacerlo. Esas restricciones lineales pueden resultar un tanto frustrantes (el cuarto capítulo es un tanto nefario en ese sentido).

En cuanto al estado técnico. Lo cierto es que me ha sorprendido que, teniendo el tiempo que tiene, no haya sido necesario dar ningún rodeo o trastear con ninguna configuración para que funcione correctamente. Instalar y jugar.

La historia debería durar unas 8-10 horas. Como ocurre en este tipo de juegos, el tiempo variará un poco dependiendo de si nos atascamos más o menos y nuestra paciencia.

Runaway è un’avventura grafica che sa di anni 2000, di quando le storie si prendevano il loro tempo e le icone point-and-click erano piccole opere d’arte. È un viaggio on the road pieno di colori, personaggi strambi e situazioni assurde, con quel tocco da film d’avventura che oggi non si vede quasi più.

La scrittura è leggera, ironica, a volte sopra le righe. Brian e Gina funzionano: lui è il classico “tipo qualunque” catapultato nel casino, lei è il mistero che mette in moto tutto.
Gli enigmi? Vecchia scuola: logici, ma spesso bastardi il giusto. Qualche volta strappi i capelli, ma fa parte del DNA delle avventure.

Pro:

Storia divertente, con atmosfera da film anni ’90.

Personaggi memorabili e dialoghi ben scritti.

Stile grafico cartoon piacevole ancora oggi.

Belle musiche che ti riportano indietro nel tempo.

Contro:

Alcuni enigmi sono un po’ troppo macchinosi.

Ritmo altalenante in certi capitoli.

Interfaccia datata, ma ci sta: è parte del pacchetto nostalgia.

Verdetto:
Runaway è una cartolina vintage dal mondo delle avventure grafiche. Se ami il genere, se ti mancano quelle vibrazioni alla Broken Sword, o se vuoi una storia scanzonata da goderti con calma, qui trovi una piccola gemma che ancora regge botta.

Just completed this (with no hints), and it is one of the best point and click adventures I've played. Absolutely up there with the best of LucasArts. Yes, the puzzles are old school, but if this is your genre you know what to expect. The story is great, the graphics are incredibly well designed and the voice acting is also a lot of fun. Wish I'd played this years earlier (I only got into it after playing Vertigo by the same studio, which is a much simpler game).

Runaway: A Road Adventure é um point and click que exige do jogador uma predisposição específica: encarar a experiência como se estivesse assistindo a um daqueles filmes leves e absurdos da "Sessão da Tarde". Se você não entrar nesse espírito, há grandes chances de se frustrar.

[b]Enredo: do nonsense ao bizarro[/b]

A história é uma mistura caótica de elementos: máfia, misticismo, ocultismo, povos indígenas e até alienígenas. Tudo isso tratado com uma leveza quase cômica, como se nada tivesse real importância. O enredo não é envolvente nem surpreendente e nem tenta ser. Ainda assim, de forma quase inexplicável, você se vê envolvido, ajudando personagens por puro acaso. Os protagonistas são meros instrumentos do roteiro, sem profundidade ou carisma. Você não se importa com ninguém, apenas segue adiante, curioso para ver qual será a próxima maluquice.

[b]Visual: bonito, mas problemático[/b]

Graficamente, o jogo impressiona, mesmo hoje. Os cenários são bem desenhados, com um estilo artístico caricato que funciona bem dentro da proposta. Os personagens têm proporções estranhas e rostos esquisitos, mas isso parece intencional, parte do charme visual. O problema é que a direção de arte e o design dos puzzles parecem não ter conversado. O jogo abusa do famigerado "pixel hunting": objetos essenciais ficam escondidos em áreas escuras ou mal sinalizadas. Um exemplo frustrante ocorre logo no início, quando você precisa encontrar uma seringa que simplesmente não está visível só ao passar o cursor por um canto escuro da estante é que o nome do item aparece. Isso quebra a imersão e dá a sensação de que os quebra-cabeças foram pensados depois dos cenários, e não o contrário.

[b]Jogabilidade: simples, mas inconsistente[/b]

A mecânica segue o padrão do gênero: clique para andar, interaja com objetos, use ou examine itens. Porém, a execução é inconsistente. Um exemplo claro é a bolsa da personagem Gina: ao clicar em "olhar", o protagonista apenas comenta sobre ela; ao clicar em "usar", ela vai para o inventário. Mas para encontrar os itens dentro da bolsa, você precisa abrir o inventário e usar a opção "olhar" novamente e às vezes, repetir esse processo mais de uma vez para encontrar tudo. Em outros momentos, o jogo ignora essa lógica e adiciona os itens automaticamente. Essa falta de padrão confunde e atrapalha a fluidez da experiência.
Outro ponto negativo é a mecânica de espera: em certas situações, você precisa aguardar que um personagem conclua uma tarefa para prosseguir. Mas essa espera se resume a sair da área e voltar, o que se torna um vai-e-volta desnecessário. Uma solução mais criativa, como inserir um puzzle nesse intervalo, teria sido muito mais interessante.

Runaway: A Road Adventure é um jogo que pode agradar quem busca uma experiência leve, descompromissada e recheada de situações absurdas. É como assistir a um filme bizarro de domingo à tarde: você sabe que não vai mudar sua vida, mas pode render boas risadas e momentos curiosos. Apesar de seus problemas de design e narrativa rasa, há valor na proposta especialmente se você estiver no clima certo para embarcar nessa viagem nonsense.

To get this game working in Windows 11 I had to use DxWrapper. These kind of applications are like magic to me and I'm glad people wrote them.

The game looks great and starts promising, but soon the fun is spoiled.

- There is a lot of pixel hunting. Sometimes you have to find an object that's only a few pixels wide, or an object that blends in with a much bigger object. Without hotspots these really suck, and the most likely reason you get stuck is because you've missed a small but important item.
- One of my biggest no-go's when it comes to adventure games are objects that either become interesting for the character when it wasn't before ("oh suddenly I need this bucket, while 5 minutes ago I said I didn't need such a rusty thing") or -and this is even worse- items that suddenly hold more items than they previously did. For example, there's a closet in the game that'll give you an item. If you come back at a later time, after having talked to someone, it suddenly contains another item that you need. You might think this is so the player won't get overwhelmed with items, but this game throws so much stuff at you that I don't believe that. It's just padding, and I hate that in adventure games. There's nothing that hints you that there is a new item there.
- The main character is the biggest wuss ever. He literally doesn't want to get his hands dirty. When an object lands in the mud, he refuses to pick it up.
- Straight from the start you get some items in your inventory you're never going to use. Not one, but three of them. Why?
- At some point there's senseless padding in the form of waiting. “I'll do it soon”. You then have to go to the map screen, and come straight back. It's so pointless.

Because of these issues I can't give it a high score. I probably won't be picking up the second game in a hurry, but I hope it'll be a better experience if I do.

Dwadzieścia lat mi zajęło ukończenie tej gry. Nie grałem w nią oczywiście dwadzieścia lat, ale jakoś dwadzieścia lat temu grałem w nią po raz pierwszy. Zrobiłem chyba trzy podejścia, nigdy wcześniej nie dotarłem dalej niż do trzeciego rozdziału. Tym razem kliknęło i muszę powiedzieć, że mi się podobało. Owszem, nie jest to ta sama liga co Broken Sword czy Gabriel Knight czy gry LucasArts, ale jest naprawdę dobrze.

Największym plusem tej produkcji jest jej oprawa graficzna. Wszystkie tła są ręcznie rysowane i są przepiękne oraz bogate w detale. To się nigdy nie zestarzeje, co najwyżej rozdzielczość może być zbyt mała. Mimo że postaci są renderowane w 3D, to zastosowany na nich cel-shading i filtry sprawiają, że zdają się one również być narysowane. Inne gry z tamtych czasów, w których użyto trójwymiarowych modeli wyglądają dziś brzydko i topornie, a Runaway nadal wygląda dobrze. Podobało mi się również to, że wszystkie czynności podejmowane przez głównego bohatera są animowane, co nie jest standardem w przygodówkach, nawet tych współczesnych.

Zagadki są logiczne, raczej wszystkie mają sens, a ich rozwiązanie sprawiało mi przyjemność. W grze brak jest łamigłówek, wszystkie zagadki opierają się na interakcji między przedmiotami i otoczeniem, czyli taki przygodówkowy standard. Trudnością jest to, że gra nie posiada systemu hotspotów, interaktywnych przedmiotów jest masa i w żaden sposób nie wyróżniają się one z tła, więc powodzenia np w zauważeniu jednego gwoździa w jakiejś desce, która znajduje się gdzieś z boku ekranu. Dodatkowo bywa i tak, ze Brian, czyli główny bohater, nie może zebrać danego przedmiotu czy wejść z nim w interakcję dopóki przedmiot ten nie jest mu potrzebny. W efekcie trzeba obserwować otoczenie i zapamiętywać gdzie się widziało coś potencjalnie przydatnego, bo może będzie do tego miejsca trzeba wrócić później. Czasem bohater komentuje dany przedmiot dając znać, że może mu się przydać, ale jeszcze nie teraz, a czasem tego nie robi... Nie zacinałem się w tej grze na zagadkach, tylko właśnie w takich momentach gdy czegoś nie zauważyłem, bądź nie wiedziałem nawet, że czegoś szukam. Polecam stronę Universal Hint System, która nie daje gotowych rozwiązań (chociaż daje, jak ktoś chce), tylko delikatnie i stopniowo nakierowuje nas we właściwym kierunku. Mi kilka razy pomogła.

Fabularnie jest ok, myślę, że mogłoby być lepiej.

Generalnie jest to dobra gra, może nawet dobra z plusem. Cieszę się, że zdecydowałem się po nią sięgnąć ponownie.

Merci les années 2000 d'avoir inventé l'humour !
Le jeu reste dans son jus graphiquement, même si cela serait top d'avoir les résolutions d'écran moderne.
Par contre, les solutions sont parfois très illogique, au point de passer devant la solution des centaines de fois et de craquer à regarder la solution sur internet pour couper une corde avec du saucisson.

Originally this game would not work. However if you are having problems on windows 11 with the screen in black and white and off centre you have to go into the settings on the main menu and change the video definition from high to low. Once you do this the game ran fine for me. As for the game. Was not bad for an adventure game.

Ma-a-an... I knew about this game since the release date. I own it in my library for ages. I have it installed on my PC for almost a decade. And now... after so many years... I finally played it. And I'm not disappointed. While not flawless - it was still a good experience. I'd call it a worthy product of it's time, which brings good memories about times of Guybrush Threepwood and Ben Throttle.

What should you expect? An old scholl classic point and click game. That means? - Brutal pixel hunting, weird decisions and not straightforward solutions. No more - no less. If you know - you know. If you are a hardcore point and click fan - I don't think than anything may become an obstacle for you here. But if you are a newcomer in the genre and not familiar with older games - do not say I didn't warn you.

As an Adventure game enthusiast, I'm quite enjoying this one! I feel like it's right up the alley with the games i usually like to play. It has an interesting story that captivates me. I found myself thinking about it even when i'm not playing. I like the vivid colors and graphics, the puzzles are nice. It is sometimes hard to find all clickable items on the screen and I get stuck because i didn't pick up something really small, or had to go back and try to pick up after certain dialogue was triggered. In short, I'm having a lot of fun playing this, and overall i'd give it 10/10, especially considering it's an older game. It holds well even today.

Runaway's a classic point and click adventure game but to my disappointment I was unable to play it. I have windows 11.
There is a way, a complicated bypass way to do it, but I wasn't able to figure it out. Runaway, a road adventure is not that old, (released July 6st, 2001) so I don't understand the tech issues.

I'll keep it in my library for now and perhaps try to get it to work in the future instead or I might speed up my Toyota Corolla to 88 miles an hour and go back in time rather..

It's a really good point and click but you gotta install a few mods to make the game run better it will not run swell on a modern windows 10 PC or probably windows 11 at all. Some parts of the game didn't age super well in terms of humor and jokes.

L'ayant fais , y à des années de cela, et voyant que la trilogie est disponible pour moins de trois euro,.

j'ai foncer les yeux fermée. Mes quand je le lance, mon jeu affiche un écran noir avec tout les contour du personnage en rose, l'audio quand a lui fonctionne.

J'ai était à la pèche au infos , et remarque également que je dois faire tout un procéder pour configurer mon jeu, n'y connaissant rien la dedans sa commence à m'énerver.

Runaway: A Road Adventure ist ein klassisches Point & Click-Adventure aus den 2000ern.
Wir verfolgen die spannende Geschichte von Brian Basco, der die, vor der Mafia flüchtende, Schönheit Gina anfährt. Nach und nach verstrickt er sich immer tiefer in ein Abenteuer, wobei er verschiedene einzigartige Charaktere trifft.
[spoiler] Hier will ich den ersten negativen Punkt anbringen: Gina. Am Anfang noch die Dame in Nöten, entpuppt sie sich als Lügnerin und Manipulatorin. Brian fällt komplett auf sie rein und bleibt am Ende auch mit ihr zusammen. Das erschließt sich mir nicht wirklich als logisch, aber jedem das seine... [/spoiler]
Der Zeichenstil ist schön gestaltet und unterstreicht eine wirkliche Detailverliebtheit in jedem Gebiet. Da aber so viele Details vorhanden ist, werden auch gerne mal wichtige Gegenstände übersehen. Das sorgt manchmal für Frust und streckt die Spielzeit durch Backtracking enorm.
Die Musik in den einzelnen Gebieten hat wunderbar gepasst und sorgte für die richtige Atmosphäre. Ein paar Musikstücke davon haben mich an andere Spiele aus der Zeit erinnert und sorgten für etwas Nostalgie.
Das wichtigste an solchen Spielen sind immer die Rätsel. Diese waren teilweise wirklich knackig. Einiges konnte man sich schon vorher zusammenreimen, während anderes viel mit "Versuch und Irrtum" zu tun hatte.
Auch wenn das Spiel nur auf Englisch ist, hatte ich viel Spaß damit. Empfehlenswert!!!!

Tengo sentimientos encontrados con este juego y, la verdad, que lo recordaba bastante mejor. Aventura gráfica de Pendulo Studio que, en su momento, era de lo mejorcito en España, como ya dejaron ver con ese Hollywood Monsters. Se nota que aplicaron aquí muchas de las cosas que les habían funcionado anteriormente y es un juego que, en el momento en que se lanzó, en uno de las épocas doradas de las aventuras gráficas, la verdad que daba gusto ver que un juego español pudiera estar ahí.

Sin embargo, rejugado ahora, me ha dejado un sabor amargo. Argumento muy trillado, guión lleno de tópicos y no muy bien aprovechados, puzzles que muchas veces se basan en encontrar una cosa minúscula apenas distinguible en el escenario o que sólo puedes "activar" tras cierta conversación o desencadenante, aunque ya tengas claro lo que tienes que hacer. Es muy lineal en ese sentido. Los diálogos dejan bastante que desear, con partes que apenas aportan y las introducciones que hace Brian al principio de cada capítulo, se hacen demasiado tediosas, sobreexplicando todo, cuando hay cosas que ya están bastante claras. Creo que al final uno de los principales problemas es que los protagonistas no son demasiado carismáticos y así es complicado en una aventura.

Lo cual me lleva al último punto y uno que me ha influido bastante. Sólo juegas con el protagonista (desaprovechando una mecánica que le habría dado algo de aire fresco) y eso hace que Nina sea básicamente una mujer florero que no hace nada en la aventura. El juego está cargado de sexismo y comentarios bastante desafortunados. Y no me vale el tema de que el juego ya tiene muchos años y era otro momento, porque ya entonces había joyas como Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Syberia, etc., donde sí hacían un correcto tratamiento de los personajes femeninos y eran éxitos. Incluso, si me apuras, tienes a Lara Croft, donde hay "polígonos", sí, pero hace cosas y es desafiante. Aquí Nine actúa simplemente como gancho de carne. Vamos, que está hecho a propósito. Tal vez haya sido buscando a posta ese extremo, como parodia...pero si es así, desde luego no queda muy claro.

En definitiva, creo que no es mal juego del todo, pero creo que hay propuestas de aventuras muchísimo mejores. Lo mejor del juego, sin duda, la banda sonora, con el tema de Liquor.

This is a game I remember when it first came out. I was a kid and watched other people play; it was so unique that it stuck in my mind and twenty years after it came out, I bought it to play as an adult. It is exactly as I remember it, even if I have a better appreciation and understanding about it.
I fell in love with this game just through its opening into. It is absolutely amazing. The story itself is really a ridiculous journey that somehow works. Some of the mechanics are a little awkward. A part of this is the style. It's hard to tell from the pictures in steam, but the POV can be a little hard to work with, and sometimes the "puzzles" you're trying to work with aren't intuitive, so this game can be a little tricky. It's definitely worth it because this is one whacky adventure, the characters are so distinct and memorable, and overall it's just a feel-good game.
Totally worth the full price, and just have some patience; this game is a little older!

Именно таким должно быть настоящее приключение: стильное, задорное, уникальное, с роковой красоткой и с тайнами, где сплетаются нуар, роад муви и индейская мистика.
Если смотреть объективно, это типичный квест с геймдизайном из 90-х. Может быть, с не умопомрачительным но весьма достойным сюжетом.
Смотрю, многие в отзывах жалуются, что игру без гайда не пройдёшь... Нуу, можно на самом деле. Не перебором, так перебором предметов в инвентаре, не перебором, так вазюканием мышки по экрану. Народ, а вы другие квесты что ли видели? Вот и я нет.
В общем, один из лучших образчиков жанра, который пропускать не рекомендуется. Слишком уж очаровательная игра не смотря на все типичные болезни для жанра.
Жаль только, качать придётся всё равно с других сайтов, потому что в стим русский язык по странной причине не завезли. А русификация же, блин, официальная имеется ещё с момента выхода!

Runaway fue la segunda aventura (sin contar con Igor) del estudio y siguió la línea marcada por Hollywood Monsters aunque se mejoraron muchos los aspectos técnicos y los gráficos. Aquí todo está más cuidado. Tengo que decir que también es una de mis aventuras gráficas favoritas porque me dio muchas horas entretenidas, tiene grandes momentos como el capítulo en el desierto con las Drag Queens. La historia trata de Brian un recién licenciado que se va a Berkely a hacer su doctorado y nada más salir atropella por accidente a Gina una cantante de un club. Esta le contará una milonga en el hospital para que le ayude a salvarla y como Brian es un hetero dócil se deja liar por las tetas de ella. Por cierto, muy mal el tratamiento a la mujer, mucha pechuga y poco cerebro. En esta aventura solo manejas a Brian. Tras muchas peripecias consiguen averiguar lo que pasó y llevarse un buen fajo de billetes.
En definitiva una aventura recomendable, entretenida y lógica.

A good point and click adventure is one where you are challenged but the solution is achievable without a guide. Often times when you do break down and look up the answer, you feel embarrassed for not figuring it out yourself. This is not one of those games, it sucks. The puzzles REQUIRE a guide (which ruins the challenge) and finding items can be a pixel hunt. There are many great point and click adventure games, especially from the early 2000's. This is not one of them.

Runaway est une saga de point & click en 3 volets. La qualité des 3 épisodes est plutôt homogène, et de très bon niveau, et il est fortement recommandé de les faire dans l'ordre, à savoir :

- Runaway: A Road Adventure (sorti en 2001 en Espagne, puis en 2003 dans le reste du monde)
- Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle (2006)
- Runaway 3: A Twist of Fate (2009)

Dans ce premier épisode, Brian Basco, un étudiant en physique qui prépare son départ pour Harvard, est impliqué malgré lui dans une affaire criminelle. En faisant un détour par un hôpital après un accident de voiture, il sauve Gina Timmins, une danseuse de cabaret pourchassée par la mafia. Gina est témoin d'un meurtre impliquant la mafia Sandretti, et les deux héros se retrouvent en fuite.

Le duo est attachant et charismatique, le scénario est plutôt réussi, et les énigmes fonctionnent bien. Sorti à une époque où il n'y avait pas grand-chose à se mettre sous la dent côté point & click, le jeu parvient à faire revivre le genre avec brio.

Soundtrack, art and acting are the strong points while everything else is pretty much just ok, with puzzles sometimes being slightly confusing or tedious, especialy toward the end when you often have to revisit locations where you need to wait for Brian to slowly move with some scenes not having the "fast travel" (I don't blame Sushi for sliding down the pole to avoid the stairs)

Story mixes in almost everything, taking all kinds of turns, and while it has some serious notes it really is just a comedy with plenty of fourth wall breaking which is one of the primary narrative tools. Once the [spoiler] aliens [/spoiler] show up all the seriousness is long gone and goofines with some more fanservice ensues.

And most importantly, he was gay, wasn't he man?

This game is a minor classic of the point-and-click genre. It sold nearly a million copies in Europe, and was a minor hit in the US. It's a difficult game, with more than a few puzzles that are pretty much impossible to solve without a walkthrough. The story is funny and engaging, although there's a few cultural stereotypes that haven't aged well. The graphics are perfectly fine for a game that was released in 2001, and the music and voice acting is stellar. This game is often on sale for under a dollar, and that's quite a bargain if you like this type of retro gaming. The major downside is that the puzzles are more frustrating than fun, at least in my opinion. Rating: 7/10.

A lot of points can be interacted with only if some mandatory trigger happened.
Also, several nonsensical solutions.

All this makes the game far from the brightest star in the point-and-click genre.
The game is dirt cheap on sale if you want it, but I would rather recommend watching it on youtube.

I really like games like this, it's sad to me that the adventure games genre and particularly the point-and-click genre has basically disappeared.

I was a big fan of this game when it came out in the early 2000s and replaying it definitely brought back a ton of memories and nostalgia. The art style albeit crude and unrefined at times, especially in the 3D character department, is still enjoyable. Especially the 2D backgrounds are great!

In terms of puzzles, there's some fun ones in there. The usual inventory puzzles, where you combine items to get the desired result, are usually pretty good.

The game is certainly not without flaws.

My main issue is that there's zero flexibility in how you progress, which limits my enjoyment of games like this a lot. For instance; turning on the sprinklers in a room, requires you to read a book first. There's a lot of cases where the solution is obvious, but you cannot get to it, before you completed a number of actions before hand even though they are logically not dependent on those actions. Another example of this; one of the characters in the final chapter talks about chewing tobacco. You have the leaves, you have a mortar and makeshift pestle, but you cannot combine them before you have the minty ingredient that will eventually make it the mint flavored chewing tobacco the character in question specifically asked for. This makes you think that the mortar and pestle don't really go together. At least let us combine the mortar and pestle before we have that fourth ingredient and if the leaves are combined, maybe a message saying, I'm missing an ingredient to complete the recipe or something.

This same problem exists in another form, sometimes an item can't be picked up, unless the story is progressed enough. When stuck in certain areas, it's really annoying to having to go around clicking stuff again in the hopes that it can be picked up.

It would also be good if different approaches could solve a puzzle. There's a section for instance where you have to fill a tank with water from an oil can, which only holds so much so you have to do this 4-5 times. Meanwhile, you have a 1L bottle and a 5L jerrycan. Whenever you try to use the bottle, you get the message that the nozzle is too narrow, so the bottle would spill everywhere. But filling the oil can from the bottle doesn't work. Filling the jerrycan with water also doesn't work. Another example is that there's a ring and a strap that are attached and you need to separate the two somehow. There's a board of tools including pliers and wire cutters, that would perfectly do the trick, hell there's even a metal saw on the wall. Instead you have to go find the garden shears which were terribly hidden btw.

A few "puzzles" are also very impractical and far fetched. Luckily these are quite scarce. Still in cases like this, an extra line of dialogue could definitely make things less random. An example for this would be; there's a trough with something hidden inside, the solution to this problem is so impractical that I'd not have found it unless I went around trying random stuff. I was honestly surprised when I finally found the solution.

It feels like they ran out of money towards the end, interactions with characters got skipped, entire action pieces were relegated to a single line of dialogue, a shame really, the entire ending felt rushed and lacking in interactivity.

Although the storytelling in Runaway: A Road Adventure wasn't going to win any Awards, it's still a capsule of a time where fun could still be had; with stereotypical bad guys, conspiracies, a bit of gratuitous violence and just a dash of sexiness and I'm all for it!

I'm now going to get into the sequels for the first time ever.

Competent classic point-and-click adventure with (although not original) for video game standards well fleshed out writing. Genre-classic pixel hunting and a number of instances of repeating the same action on the same object at different times for different results may annoy.

Long-ish. 12 hours would be fast; 20 not very slow. At currently 2,99€ for the five game Pendulo adventure pack it's a steal.

Runaway, A Road Adventure is an ancient game from 2003. It's a whopping 21 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware.

It's an old point and click adventure game, think The Secret of Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle, but not as good, and weirdly themed around strippers. Ok, whatever, Leisure Suit Larry did okay for Ken and Roberta Williams. Anyway this isn't a great story and it won't hook people in the same way the sheer madness and fun of Monkey Island and DoTT did back in the 1990's.

Speaking of which, it's not the 1990's anymore. Nor was it the 1990's in 2003 when they launched this.

Another notable thing here is that despite this being such an old game, it was ported to mobile app stores as a mobile app. From a technical perspective, as something that now qualifies as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard on modern PC games.

There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.

The game features simple, fairly basic 2D visuals, and while some effort went into them, and they don't look bad exactly, they don't look great, either. In the 3D era of gaming, that kicked off in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D GPUs like the S3 Virge and ATI Rage, phoning in the graphics like this isn't going to win any awards or appeal to enthusiast PC gamers.

The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

Runaway, A Road Adventure is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $5 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. It's dated, and while the hand drawn art resists looking as dated as it otherwise would, the fixed low resolution is enough to deter most gamers.

For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Borderlands 2", "Batman: Arkham Origins" or "Metro 2033". Quality, recently and professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

Play with a guide, or you will go insane. Some of the puzzles are absolutely absurd, but with a guide it becomes hilarious to see what these devs thought of as "logical". The game is at times genuinely charming with its upbeat storytelling and weird characters. Not a masterpiece by any means, but if you like strange janky adventure games made by small but passionate studios, I think this is worth your time!
