I have played many peggle-like games, and this one had promise but the main "gimmick" of having HP instead of balls/lives pretty much ruins the experience. since the floor is spikes and hurts you almost every turn, with very little predictability of the physics (because the physics do not obey any rules of physics), each mistake punishes you forever rather than for one turn. too many things cause damage, not enough things heal you. in a boss room, you have to pay attention to multiple variables to check whether it's even worth it to hit the spikes. are you vulnerable? are you weak? are you poisoned? so that in some cases hitting the spikes causes 5/300 damage, but if you have negative status effects could take 70 or 100/300 HP away. meaning game over. This mechanic could be improved greatly by just thinking it through. why am I earning gold? why not be able to spend some of it to buy HP back at the end of every x rooms? but instead this game falls flat and gets too annoying after about 2 hours.

玩起来像宝开的《Peggle》，再加入了rouguelike要素和类似《杀戮尖塔》的框架。
玩法构思很惊艳，画风也很有意思，很吸引人，相信大多数人都是被这些吸引的。初步体验下来也确实有趣，不同的职业有不同的武器、装备、技能、被动、还有事件、饰品，挑战和类似《雨中冒险》的圣物系统。看上去也很丰富，

然后在我用几个小时尝试了下四个角色后打算深入游玩的时候，游戏马上就开始变得非常无聊
。
作为一个roguelike游戏，它自然没有什么局外的成长强化要素，只有少量的能解锁的道具，所以roguelike游戏本身是需要通过玩家的操作技巧和运气来获得乐趣。
然而这游戏里需要运气的占比可比需要操作技巧的占比高太多了，可能盗贼和德鲁伊这种有技能的角色操作占比会更高一点，但是大多数时候还是靠运气。
游戏中撞击近战的敌人时自己也会受到伤害，进攻时要硬抗伤害，精准打击一次性命中多个敌人接受到的不是爽感，而是对自己血条的担忧，过关又需要清空所有怪物，所以躲避近战怪用远程技能可能比主动撞上去更有利，但是其他地方可能就藏着各种debuff，debuff有脆弱、虚弱、狂怒、流血、中毒等等，在关卡里像是批发的一样层出不穷，弹射下去一个不好就跟和魔界花舌吻了一样，带着这一身“十全大补”回来，这种情况每一关都有可能发生，然而生命补给和治疗手段却少的可怜，可能只有关卡里有限的血瓶和装备的被动，以及少得可怜的再生buff。然而甚至缓冲垫都是快速移动的，也就是落点也基本随机，落在外面就是尖刺和毒，运气不好你就要被惩罚掉血。这种靠运气的机制基本无解，因为这种运气机制导致角色死亡，那挫败感实在太强了。
另一个方面是尽管有那么多系统，游戏内容仍然是很单调，缺少变化。在通关个一两遍之后再玩就能发现，关卡房间类型就那么几个，每个角色的技能、装备、武器也就那么几样，而打开难度“返场2”之后饰品都被限定到只有三个了，通关了几遍之后游戏就基本没有探索的内容了，能做的就只有找有更高数值的同种类装备武器和技能，很容易腻。

有种看到好题材好设计好美术好想法有潜力的游戏被浪费的难受感觉。
这类游戏需要寻找一个游玩节奏，像是隔个几天几周甚至几个月碎片时间开一把，还能感受到乐趣，然而大多数情况都是被遗忘在硬盘和steam库里。

This is a great game, I myself don't actually enjoy the game but it is surprisingly well-made and balanced. I would recommend it to others but only if they don't mind games where HP is used as a resource and has to be carefully spent and maintained or else you lose, or if they aren't a stickler for achievements since those are gated behind doing the weekly/daily runs.

The different characters all have very different playstyles and the mid-run scaling feels rewarding. The difficulty progression of the game is also challenging but doable. There is plenty of run variety.

Lot o' rogue-lites around huh? This one hits good tho and although I hate the genre name this fits the bill perfectly and is full of lovely goodness because it's not a deck-builder, it's a Peggle erm I mean pachinko game, and it is beautiful, addictive, beautiful, hateful, addictive as hell, well thought out, glorious, clever, hateful and always giving you more.

I wont waste time, it's a Peggle rogue-like where you'll fail many many times but each fail will make you slightly stronger via perks, learning and pure addicted determination. If you know the format you will love this.

But I did hit a wall, where I thought I had 'won' and quickly learned that really I had only completed the tutorial. Slay the Spire did this to me, and then *dont* look how many hours I ended up putting into that!

Well designed game, feels great to play, more-ish, well priced and basically very good.

Roundguard is definitely a game that turns a fantastic idea with subjectively-enjoyed artwork...and squanders its potentially as hard as can be, turning it into a bafflingly-executed, frustrating disappointment that is only about 10% player agency/skill, and 95% luck.

[b][u]Demerits:[/u][/b]

- Way too many dialogues.

- the “Skip” button for them does not put you back into play, with “intermissions” where you get a trinket via wheel spin, still requiring at least 4 clicks to get through, maybe 5.

- No bonus when clearing out every destructible object in a room, so little incentive to do so.

- Of the 4 characters, only two really ever seem viable in any situation.

The rogue is way too weak, even with the “double jump”, while the Wizard barely has any health while the skill you play with first time through is almost-useless in the setup, and lacking in damage.

- Yes, “First time”, because unlike seemingly every other multi-character roguelike adjacent to Sol, the tutorial skill is only the one you get your first run with them, and after that, it randomises it.

This means being able to experiment and practise with a skill is up to luck. If you didn't start with it, the only way to get it is to land in a “Book chest” slot after clearing a level, and having it be given by RNG.

- You read that right; getting equipment/items is up to you landing in a slot, something you barely have any control over.

- This is far from the only example of “Can and Should Syndrome” tainting this, as the fact you lose control after dropping means most things are up to chance, be this leaving to the room you wanted, grabbing the desired item, and more.

- On that note, lack of clarity is present on when you'll take damage from hitting an enemy.

This is already an issue, but when you couple it with the fact no shield is applied when you hit more than one enemy per shot, you take damage at rapid pace. In other words, if you intentionally plan shots to ricochet off multiple enemies, you're punished, rather than rewarded.

- When so much of the game is seemingly up to luck, this also means you can be destroyed from no fault of yours.

- ...and yes, this does mean you cannot do anything but tank the health loss when attacking.

- Worse properties to this are present, though, because debuffs are handed out like candy on Halloween. I had many runs end as a result of the fact I was somehow weakened, enraged, bleeding, and poisoned without any perceivable source.

- This means the feeling of barely being alive is present at almost all times, and this rarely – if ever – feels like a result of anything the player did.

- As well, some rooms are literally impossible because you were either screwed over by RNG on getting equipment, said load out is very much not good, you have no source of healing, not enough health to get through it without dying, or otherwise a mix of all of them, when not literally everything listed.

- Even if you do luck out and get to the final boss, you can still have it with a sliver of health, and you with nothing as you plunge down into the damaging areas.

- This is the perfect opportunity to explain the “damage area” because while Peggle gives you a free ball if you land it in the bucket, every area bit the roving cushion is either spikes, or water, taking 5 HP from the player first floor, 10 the second, and fifteen on the final one.

If this sounds like the ability to not take even more health loss on top of all the other random rolls is also up to chance, then you're absolutely right. The developers could have easily given you a reward for hitting the cushion, and nothing elsewhere, but if chance doesn't smile upon you, you're punished.

[b][u]Verdict:[/u][/b]

While an element of randomnness can make a game more exciting, engaging, and cause massive amounts of dopamine to surge through one's system, when your game is almost nothing but Random Number Generation, chance, and blind luck, it's flawed on a fundamental level. When you corrupt said reliance into outright punishment for the player when it doesn't go their way, you have a barely-playable mess that pretty much anyone is better off avoiding.

This being said, as you sometimes do have things turn out in your favour, some enjoyment can still be had, and as such, it was...

I was really looking forward to this game because I love Peggle - but unfortunately, it didn’t click with me.

The biggest issue for me is the core health mechanic. Instead of having a set number of balls or heroes, you have a health bar. Every time you attack an enemy, you lose health. But to finish a level, you have to defeat all enemies - so if you manage to hit multiple enemies with one shot, you end up taking more damage. That feels completely backwards.

In my opinion, it would make more sense if enemies attacked you after a certain amount of shots. That way, hitting multiple enemies in one shot would be rewarding rather than punishing. Right now, I felt like I was being penalized for playing well. I rarely felt like losing was my fault - it often came down to taking too much unavoidable damage just by trying to engage with the core mechanics.

Overall, I came away confused and disappointed. I wanted to enjoy this, but the design just didn’t make sense to me.

I theory, I like the idea of this game... It's probably just a skill issue on my part, but I find too often that I have run out of mana and there's no more pickups and I'm left with 1 enemy and no way to hurt it and whether or not I hit the bounce pad or the floor and take damage until I die is just luck. I'm sure someone with better skills or someone that somehow has the ability to guess where the bounces will go will have a better time.

It's a fun concept on paper, but it doesn't really work well. I really wanted to like this game, because it has some cool art and concepts and it looks well developed. But the chore mechanic is broken. You are supposed to hit the enemies, but then you get punished when you do that. Having a health bar for this type of games is just disastrous. It really takes the joy out of the game.

Decent ideas, but getting interrupted too often for the tutorial for a game this simple should not be a thing. Slow mo for every single ability shouldn't be a thing. Waiting several seconds to reset to fire again should not be a thing. Just plodding and dull.

I have this on Switch as well, but bought it on PC in order to give it a 2nd go. Games, for me, are about being able to make interesting decisions. Some games have slow decisions made carefully, e..g puzzles, text adventures, and so on. Some games have fast decisions that are more reactions and muscle memory, like fighting games and arcade classics. I am not sure I find that this game gives me the chance to make interesting decisions. I can try to set up a good shot and it gets snatched away from me. Or I can just fire blindly and get whatever. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. Overall, this is hard for me to enjoy.

캐릭터마다 본인의 깐뜨롤도 필요하고 적절한 스킬/장신구 조합/업적 등이 있으니까ㅏㅏㅏ 무난하게 질리지 않게 한판한판 할 수 있는 거 같네영

근데 정가에 사기엔.. 아까워요.. 핀볼을 돈 주고 산다면 뭔가 아깝자나... 쪼끔 할인할 때 사는 것이 베스트다

It's Peggle, but your ball is a little round guy or girl, and you shoot them at monsters and treasure. You can use a bunch of skills mid-flight to change direction or attack the monsters better.

It's a good game to play when you only have fifteen minutes.

Roundguard est un petit puzzle-game sympathique qui fait l’effort d’introduire quelques mécaniques un peu plus originales pour le genre. Le côté RPG apporte un vrai plus au jeu, augmentant la durée de vie tout en apportant un fond de stratégie. Les graphismes cartoons et l’humour omniprésent assurent également un bon divertissement.

En revanche le côté rogue-lite ne plaira peut-être pas à tout le monde, la mort signifiant ici une fin de partie assurée. Enfin, l’absence d’un mode multi-joueurs se fait un peu sentir, surtout au regard de la durée de vie assez faible du titre en mode histoire (3 mondes seulement). Cependant, l’envie de refaire une petite partie de temps en temps demeure. Et après tout, n’est-ce pas pour cela que ce type de jeu est pensé ? > 14/20

Sadly pretty bland once you get into it.

The only "build" worth persuing is the one that lets you regen constantly or get health back on skill use or otherwise, along with the Amulet of Mercy to have more mana and health potions available so that you can actually use your skills, then one movement skill and one other of your choosing. Yes, the way to win runs is to NOT play this like a peggle-like and instead force movement in certain directions with a tank build.

At least there's an interesting bit with modifiers being one-time-unlocked through the Amulets on wins, certain encores, certain gold levels, and through Dailies and Weeklies, but there's not enough skills or builds and runs take far too long for you to see many of them without getting VERY bored of the entire loop.

Also worth noting is that Encore 2 and above limit you to three trinkets, so, if you just failed your last run and got a trinket, you have 2 slots and have to pass up about 10 to 15 other trinkets, which might be why the balance is so scuffed when you do enc.2 .

Il concept di Peggle con la trovata originale del roguelite realizzata molto male. La scelta non brillante di far subire al protagonista danni, sempre e comunque, limita a mio avviso le potenzialità del gioco. Fai un tiro perfetto, non vale nulla. I nemici contrattaccheranno sempre immediatamente facendo, nel caso di boss, un botto di danni e uccidendo il personaggio anche all'istante, nonostante tiri millimetrici. La vittoria si avrà solo ed esclusivamente per clamorose botte di fondoculo nell'equipaggiamento, non tanto per abilità nei tiri. Quindi che senso ha? Altra cosa insulsa, collezionare tesori, monete, punti, non serve assolutamente a nulla perché non sblocca abilità da comprare (come in giochi analoghi), serve solo a fare punti. Da cui, le stanze dei tesori con chest a profusione, a che servono? Esatto, a nulla. Un titolo che avrebbe potuto essere davvero interessante rovinato da decisioni poco ponderate. Infinitamente meglio Peggle.

Alright. I enjoyed my time playing [i]Roundguard[/i] but I think that time has come to an end. I have completed two runs, but I don't really care about leaderboards or wrapping up challenges, which is where the emphasis lies once you've mastered the base game aspects.

This is about as accurate as product descriptions get. It is exactly that. Cartoonish, silly, with really fun gameplay involving you shooting your hero from a ballista repeatedly, to defeat enemies, destroy gold pots, chests and potions, and generally clear a kind of pinball meets pong style arena. Not only is it fun, but it is suitable for children as well, should you be so inclined to buy the game for and/or play this game with your kids.

For me, the cutesy aspect did kind of run its course after a couple hours, and while I 100% appreciate the 'all ages' approach to this game, after a while, the cutesiness did sort of grate on me. Not to the point of annoyance, but to the point where, once I'd explored the games dynamics and completed a couple runs, I was good.

Now, there is some RPG depth to this game. Levelling up happens automatically and raises your health and mana, but you will begin each run by selecting a hero and deciding whether or not you'd like to use any relics you've unlocked. You will also begin each run with a starter ability such as being able to plow through obstacles to get to your opponents, cause bleed damage, poison, etc... all cost mana, and you begin each run with a limited amount of both health and mana, which can be replenished by bouncing off of the appropriate potions.

The arenas are connected using a node system, wherein after defeating all enemies in an arena, you have to bounce your way into one to three map choices, leading you to the next arena node. Sometimes, it's easy to select which way you want to go. Other times, you'll bounce in unpredictable ways and end up in a different one than you planned, lol. With an arena clear, you also have to use the same bouncing mechanic to select an arena reward, which might be armor or weapon upgrades or new/upgraded abilities. You have two active ability slots.

Eventually, you'll end up in the boss arena, where you are treated to the boss smack-talking you before the match begins. Each boss has some sort of unique ability which will make you actually use a bit of strategy to defeat it, which is cool.

Additionally, at certain intervals in your run, you earn a time out where you get to try your luck at an automatically spinning wheel of fortune, wherein you can earn permanent passive upgrades. This will be impacted by how much gold you've earned in your run to that point. And you get a bit of banter between the dungeon master and your hero.

I played using k/m, but this game definitely has both gamepad and Steam Deck compatibility, so you should be able to play this with zero issues regardless of which you choose.

All in all, Roundguard combines a few different genres into a roguelike that is both fresh and relatively unique. I enjoyed it even if the cutesiness did wear on me a bit. This game has been bundled six times, so I wouldn't recommend paying full price, but if you get it for a nice discount or in a future bundle, I think there is a lot to like here and it's worth a look.

Had it for about two days and I'm lowkey addicted to it.

I do wish some parts would be quicker to skip (like the gold wheel) and I feel like some things like the daily/weekly runs should remain locked until you have played with all characters at least once so you'd trigger the tutorials and know what you/the enemies can do.
It's very tempting to jump right into those but the game never tells you the "new" stuff as a first time player unless you go diligently through the game in the specific order it wants you to.

Had a few bug encounters that I managed to find workarounds for and some characters feel more fun to play in general, but in general I am enjoying myself and I think the game is fun and has charm.

I am a roguelike/roguelite fan. Although Roundguard only passively claims to be a roguelike, it truly is and in many ways this game does for peggle what Balatro does for poker and Rack and Slay does for billiards - it brings roguelike elements to a genre that is otherwise pretty standard and repetitive.

Where roundguard excels is in variety - each run is very different, with very different perks and challenges. The gameplay is fun, it doesn’t feel too repetitive and the upgrade trees are unique enough that each run feels special.

Where roundguard falls short is in power builds - in games like Slay the Spire, Balatro and Brotato you will randomly get combos that make the game easy, making you feel like a god for a single round. Roundguard doesn’t have that - there are no builds that made me laugh out loud and no builds that made me crave this game when I wasn’t playing it.

Overall, I recommend the game at this price point for roguelike fans - it’s fun and a great game to passively play. It also plays very well on touchscreens and handhelds.

I remember this game in alpha and beta when it was being passed around in Renton City Retro events and other locals conventions. The devs have been in and out of this project, constantly improving it for 5ish years I believe. Still holds up even with the new modes and additional characters!

Just think Roguelite Peggle with a DND spin. kill everyone, move on!

It doesn't get very deep in mechanics for each character and skills if you compare it to Slay the Spire and Hades; hence, that's a perfect starter for any first time Roguelike/lite explorer.

So accessible in fact, All you need is a Mouse with a mouse wheel. Console Gamer? a Controller works too!

Music is fun enough to where Spotify music is unnecessary to sub to every playthrough.

Not sure if its worth the $$? They do have a free demo to check out that might change your mind or so.

I enjoyed it in whatever the state its in, even now its still as good as it gets!

Roundguard isn’t BAD necessarily but the way it’s designed is frustrating as hell. I’m no stranger to roguelites or Peggle or hard games but the way combat is designed here punishes you constantly in ways you just can’t avoid. Any standard attacks hurt you, you’ll be constantly mana starved, and can easily burn through most of a health bar with one bad bounce. Even after feeling good and beating a run I went back and still got completely destroyed in a room or two sometimes.

Neat idea, cute graphics, but there’s just too much randomness here for anything to feel fair or satisfying. Does work well on the Deck though.

Pretty fun if you like Peggle; however, you might not like the rouglike aspect if you don't like the idea of losing causing you to have to start the game over. I do generally enjoy and would recommend the game, but I wouldn't choose this game to play if I wanted to play a CHILL peggle-like game. The roguelike elements are too annoying when you're just trying to be somewhat mindless.

I loved the artstyle, soundtrack, the progression keeps me wondering "so now how do I fit this into my build" and it's simply great. I unexpectedly also managed to get the #1 on the weekly leaderboard as Druid so it was also great to see crazy runs and cool builds being recognized like that.

In short, it's an amazing game if you are into "Peggle" and roguelite gameplay in general. After playing it you can tell for yourself there was some love put into this game. :)

So far my only criticism is that I wish there were some DLC's to buy but to be honest I couldn't suggest much other than some new classes/skills and perhaps different types of pegs that allowed us to do those circular catches like on "Peggle".

Just isn't my cup of tea with these RPG elements and design choices.
The amount of damage you have to soak up to complete levels feels ridiculous. Especially with the amount of Status Effect Spam of Vulnerable (Takes 2x Damage), Weaken (Deal Half Damage), Poison. Alot of this when majority of the enemies are melee attackers (You bump them to deal damage AND take damage). The fact that avoiding targets is much more beneficial that bumping them to even damage them is surprising. After that, you usually wouldn't be ready for the next level.
Got tired of runs ending so quickly even when I was nearing the final boss, I had to run the easy mode to get a win. A good chunk of the change in easy mode felt mostly just right. Again, Mostly just right.
It has a leveling system to gain raw stats. On easy mode, I finished the game at level 10. On normal, I couldn't even get to level 5 on the last world. You get a big jump in health in easy mode. Completed Easy with 600 hp. Can barely get 300 on normal. The Spells Reckless Charge and Double Jump are god tier spells. If you don't have them, good luck winning...

With these balance issues and design choices, each run just feels like a waste of time.

[h1]Not Pinball, But Fun If You Like Peggle[/h1]

OK, Steam, come over here and let me explain something. Pachinko (Peggle) and pinball are [i]different games[/i]. In pinball, you aim the ball using flippers at the [i]bottom[/i] of the board, where a good player can prevent the ball from draining more or less indefinitely. Keeping the ball in play depends on the player's skill and requires constant input. Pinball is a not a "physics-based Pegglelike" and I think my soul left my body just typing that, oh my god.

The core of Peggle is aiming carefully and gauging the trajectory of the ball as it bounces. Once the ball enters play there's not much else to do until it drains and you can fire again. Roundgard adds interest and action by offering several types of ball (based on D&D classes) that have special abilities you can trigger while the ball is in play. For instance, the rogue has "Double Jump," allowing it to fire off in a different direction whenever the player wants. Or time an attack by the warrior for extra damage. That makes the basic gameplay a lot more engaging.

There are also light (very light) RPG elements, such as equipment and HP/MP gauges. The "Roguelike" part is that the levels are shuffled around between runs, I think? The writing and art are also a lot of fun. All of this adds to the usual Peggle experience, so I would recommend this game to people who enjoy that kind of thing. But not to people who like pinball, because PEGGLE IS NOT PINBALL YOU MUPPETS. End of review, thank you and get off my lawn.

worth buying on sale. Sort of halfway between a cell phone game and a real game.

EDIT: The replayability of this game doesn't diminish. The weekly and daily challenges are fresh enough to be fun most of the time. If anyone is also a Slay the Spire player, you know how it can sometimes feel like too much of the same. Roundguard manages to avoid this.

I also have Peglin, and between the two: I heavily prefer Roundguard.

The biggest problem with this game is how it can punish you for quality shot making, especially around the sword skeleton enemies. They do a lot of damage and deal increased damage for a time after hitting them. So if you land a shot that bounces off one (or worse, two or three in a cluster) you can end up taking massive damage. I've taken over 100hp damage from such an occasion. In other peggle-like games, hitting the target is the whole point. In this game, not hitting the target is often more beneficial. Weird game design, and not very fun IMO.

This game is overly dependent on managing your hit points such that your build MUST revolve around either being able to consistently hit potions (a movement ability, or a projectile) or you must take equipment that helps you regenerate it. This might seem like a strange thing to complain about, but it means that some of the characters are significantly better because they have abilities that help them do this. The over reliance on managing hit points also means that a run can very quickly end if you don't come across something early on that helps with this.

Roundguard lacks any real diversity. It has different classes that all have access to different abilities, however the pool of abilities to draw from is actually fairly small and you find yourself playing the same abilities over and over again because there are some that are just VASTLY superior to others.

The game feels designed to punish you instead of reward you. For example: There's a cushion at the bottom of the screen that moves back and fourth. If you hit the cushion you don't loose hit points, if you don't hit it you run into spikes or water or whatever is down there and lose hit points. The result is that it feels like a punishment rather than a reward. There are other things in the game that feel like that: hitting spider eggs poisons you but also destroys potions in a rather large radius, hitting grave stones causes skulls to turn into flaming skulls that damage you later when you hit them. And attacking enemies also does damage to you so you will often find yourself in a situation where the only way to progress is to do the thing that will kill you.

This is a great game, but it needed a bit more thought in some of it's systems.

Roundguard is a Peggle inspired rogue-like.
From its artstyle to its soundtracks, Roundguard is incredibly charming.
It plays exactly like what you would expect from Peggle but with the added elements of potions, gold, items and skills.
You can play as 4 different characters that all have different skill sets that are determined randomly from a pool of skills. These skills are unfortunately a bit lacking amount wise. Only having 4 or 5 skills limits the builds you can go for since they are mostly what makes each run play uniquely.
Apart from that, i highly recommend you to give it a shot if you can get it in a bundle or for cheap but keep in mind that the replayability factor is low because of how samey it feels after a while.

I returned this game, not because it's bad, but because it doesn't respect my time. I wouldn't go as far as others to call it an hp management simulator, but it does suck when you just randomly bounce off something that kills you, and then you have to completely start over. The extra abilities are really cool. I'd really like this game if it were a bit better implemented honestly.

Игра с заметным элементом случайности и кампаниями под час (45 раундов), можно проходить в несколько приёмов. Управление почти минимальное, в основном: выбор направления для запуска (запусков наверное обычно не больше десяти за раунд), вызов одного из двух приёмов по ходу полёта и выбор улучшения в конце раунда (если есть, что выбирать).
Есть ежедневные/еженедельные забеги, разные персонажи, какие-то собираемые штуки, которые можно включать или выключать (сильно меняя ход кампании).
Но в основном после запуска только переживаешь за персонажа.
Оформление милое.

Un jeu cacahuète (*) moelleux, croustillant, kid-friendly (**) et good-mood !

(*) Jeu cacahuète : un titre mineur, dit aussi "d'apéritif", à lancer de temps en temps avec plaisir, sans pour autant le try-hard pasionnément.
(**) Kid-friendly : ici, l'enfant de 6-7 ans a kifé aussi et demandé la manette beaucoup de fois.

Vous connaissez PEGGLE ?
C'est une sorte de flipper décalé : on lance la boule, qui rebondit ici ou là, dans le but de nettoyer le tableau et faire des points. En cas de victoire, une musique éxagérément épique se lance, tonitruante, vous faisant passer pour le héros du jour.
De Peggle, Roundguard a conservé l'idée de base, en y greffant un thème (la fantasy légère, qui regarde plutôt du côté de Naheulbeuk que de Dark Souls).

Mais surtout en ajoutant une dimension RPG / roguelike : plusieurs classes de personnages, 2 compétences actives et pas mal de passives.
Le skill compte : au lieu de simplement de lancer la bille, on a clairement la main dessus, comparé à un jeu de flipper habituel.

Le jeu s'assume (et ça, c'est bon) : quitte à être léger, sympa et coloré, il sera mignon. Tous les monstres sont adorables, les sons mettent à l'aise, la musique se fait caressante, l'écriture amusante, et l'ensemble est bordé de gentillesse.

C'est donc un grand oui, même si on peut chipoter et déplorer l'absence de mode multi et un jeu finalement très limité. Il n'entre pas dans la cour des grands (d'ailleurs seuls 7% des joueurs ont terminé un run...). Mais il y a un temps pour tout, et parfois c'est l'heure du thé glacé, d'un bol de noix, et de Rounguard.

Fantastic expansion on the Peggle game idea with lots of replay value, due to the rogue-like elements and modifiers. I only really disliked unlocking said modifiers over daily or weekly game-rewards, having to play 5 dailies(or 2 weeklies) for 1 modifier is a bit high in my opinion, especially after having beaten the previous medals/roses. Though the achievements and daily/weekly challenges give another great replayability by having to play in different and unique ways.

The bunch of different characters with their own unique items/skills are really fun to play and make every run different. A few more items/skills would be amazing, but for the size of the game its totally fine. (Maybe a DLC with more characters/items?)

I know pachinko/pinball games won't be everyone's favorite, but I was always a big fan of Peggle and this game has definitely scratched a similar itch. While there are only four characters (maybe someday they'll be more) there's more depth to them in Roundguard than in Peggle. Instead of having a single special move, you have four fully formed characters with different stats and different skills. Its still more or less a gauntlet of levels, but it feels more like its a story or progress (or gameshow) then Peggle did.

Not to say its perfect or completely better than Peggle, but its hard not to make the comparison. This game is definitely harder and sometimes you just get unlucky and have crummy playthroughs. They have the daily/weekly challenges which are nice little touches too, but you'll be spending most of your time in the main mode. Slowly unlocking relics will allow you to put new spins on the experience and like Peggle it has a lot of replayability. The soundtrack is good, but its also a game where you can turn off the game music and just play whatever from your own music collection and just kind of get into the zone. Definitely a winner for me, and if they add more to the game through DLCs I'll likely pay up.

The concept is fun but the execution just isn't very good. The main problem with Roundguard is that you have health you have to manage. Every time you hit an enemy, which is your goal, you also take damage. Hit too many enemies in one turn? Well you thought you did well but you were wrong because you take a ton of damage. Miss the small, fast moving cushion at the bottom? You hit the spikes and lose more health. Instead of focusing on the best shot that can hit as many targets as possible, you find yourself doing the opposite, trying to take a shot where you don't hit too many enemies to manage your HP.

It's just frustrating having a Peggle clone where you feel like you're better off landing a poor shot. The HP system is terrible and really takes away from the fun of the game. Peggle already has a lot of RNG due to its nature after the first bounce or two. It's not fun when it's just incredibly punishing practically no matter what happens. If the thought of a Peggle style roguelike piques your interest, go check out Peglin instead. It's significantly better.

As banger as the concept is I feel like it doesn't work in execution. Physics feel kinda rough and bounces rarely go where I expect, run variety really doesn't seem like a thing with how few options each class and area has, and every run I played was just spamming left click to wipe every map turn 1 with my skill over and over which stops being fun really fast.

It's not a Peggle game, not really. Roundguard is first and foremost an HP management game. The actual Peggle portion of the game feels like such a secondary thing compared to the need to keep your HP up and make sure you can trade favorably with the enemy.

...Which is all fine, but not especially interesting as a game.
