In Rogue Invader, YOU are the invader attacking the alien horde in this genre-flipping roguelite shooter. 1-Bit black and white old-school art style, with modern touches and HD graphics.
Twenty years ago, the Zenos began invading Terran colonies, leaving a trail of death and tears in their wake. Terrans fought back, one planet at a time, while building a fleet to stab at the Zeno home-world. You arrive with that fleet, just after a series of massive space battles in which all supply ships have been destroyed. You are left with a huge invasion army but no supplies to invade with other than one drop-pod, and one pistol. Your standing orders are clear: END THIS WAR!

Very engaging Rouge-Like.

you definitely want to advance in this game and not lose it
so that's the reason for my thumbs down. I'm not going to redo my progress that got erased.
Whoa, retro graphics hide a real gem over here!
Game is a combo between _tactical_ shooter and XCom-lite base management. During combat part, you have to use cover (half cover and full cover) that lets you avoid shots, aim and shoot for body parts, and manage your tiny supplies of ammo, weaponry, grenades, items and armour. You die very quickly so - pretty much as game tells you directly - don't play John Wick, John Rambo or John Matrix. Don't be a John :D
One important thing you do, is use teleport pods (limited number) to teleport equipment back to the base, and then either recycle it for resources or research it for new tech. Since pods are REALLY limited in the beginning, very soon (3rd soldier) you'll start wondering whether it makes sense to spend a pod on Zeno Rifle, or wait and send up a stack of scrap, or maybe some new item you never saw before. Pretty cool!
During base phase, you figure out what you want to build out of resources you have, disassemble or research tech, and design guns with mods. Then, you equip a new soldier and voila... rinse and repeat.
Pretty darn good game, strong recommendation!
A fun 1-bit graphics (sort of) rogue-lite
The graphics are something of a gimmick (I assume derived from a 1-bit game-jam some time back), but do work for giving the game a unique style. As a rogue-lite, it has a lot of progression that persists between deaths, so you shouldn't get trapped more or less repeating the same thing for too long.
The actual controls are more or less standard for run and gun on the PC -- keyboard to move, mouse to aim. If you've played one since abuse, you know the basics.
Audio-wise, the music is excellent. If I have a complaint, it's about the dialogue. It feels like there's a mismatch between the completely serious humans and the wisecracking aliens.
So, yeah, get it. And the soundtrack.
While the game can be a little short, the gameplay is very straightforward, and the silly story is quite fun.
Small indie group made a very good game here, I hope it gets more recognition.

Fair warning, this game is HARD. I'm an experienced rogue-like player and my first successful run was drop #124, which was 16 hours into the game. There were multiple points where I didn't make any progress for 10-20 runs in a row.
The feeling when I finally beat the parts I was struggling with made it all worth it!
Pros:
1. Weapons: These were the highlight of the game. Each weapon has a very unique feel, and can be modified/customized to tune them to work the way you wanted them to.
2. Enemy AI: The enemy AI is way more lifelike and smart than it has any right to be. They will use cover effectively, pick up guns off the ground, and even sneak up behind you if you aren't careful.
3. Gameplay loop: During a drop you have intense action and stress, but once you die you get a break to analyze the loot you picked up and gear yourself out for the next run.
4. Mood/Atmosphere: This game is lighthearted and fun with great humor, which you will need when you die over and over :)
Cons:
1. Difficulty: There are some amount of people who will never be able to beat this game, no matter how long they play for.
1. Platforming: There isn't that much platforming until the final area of the game. The platforming deaths didn't feel like I was learning anything or getting better, they just felt frustrating.
Overall I really enjoyed this game. This is the type of game that will keep you up late into the night saying "Just one more run, I'll get those Xeno's this time!"

This game is pretty unique. The 1 bit effect is pretty cool. It has a nice retro aesthetic with game play that doesn't make you feel like your clunking around in some 40+ yr old scroller. There's a surprising amount of depth to the game, including fighting mechanics, weapon mods, a resource forge etc. I think the humorous intel was a nice touch as well. The creators did a great job of creating little back stories and justification for development choices.
I've already recommended this to my gaming buddies and would recommend it to you as well.
I'll try to revisit this review once I have more screen time behind it.
I love the game. I love the graphics. I like that it takes place in space and is science fiction. I really like the attack and defense features as they seem well thought out. There is a great arsenal of weapons to gather. There are different stages to the planet, and the game gets more challenging as you progress along the way. The check points are well spaced out, too. The keys are easy to use to control your character. I would definitely recommend this game to other gamers. This is an action game with a retro and humor twist.
A difficult but charming roguelite in the vein of older shooters, with an aesthetic to match. Doesn't explain itself very well in terms of mechanics, but once you get acquainted with what you're doing, it's great fun and very rewarding.
When I started the game, the retro, black and white look immediately took me back to my childhood days when I played Dark Castle and King's Quest on my Macintosh computer. Ah, the memories. I still love Dark Castle. But Rogue Invader is even MORE challenging then those old-school games of my past, but just as fun and entertaining, even though I am now an adult with four kids at home. Actually, my kids really like Rogue Invader, too, and they picked up on the keys super fast since they are typical "gaming" keys. But Rogue Invader differs from the games of the past in that it not only has cool, fully-voiced cut scenes, but it is a strategy game that builds on itself each time you go through a level and...well...DIE. Dying is essential in this game, and unavoidable, so don't get too frustrated when you get killed over and over again. It's a learning experience, one you need to grow and develop in the game. You learn more each time you go through a sequence and then you use that knowledge to build new and improved weapons and armor to make your next attack stronger and more efficient. My kids like that you can rename your weapons, and they get a kick out of the snarky comments the aliens make when you die. They also like the weapons and "loot chests" that can be picked up along your way, adding to the arsenal back on the ship. The music is really cool, too. This is a fun strategy game not only appropriate for kids, but freakin' challenging for adults, too. It looks simple in the demo, but it is a lot more complex than you realize as you find yourself hooked trying to get to the bad guys over and over again, each time trying new weapons, armor, and strategies. It's not an easy game. It's certainly a challenge, which is what we all love in a good game! Great fun! I highly recommend Rogue Invader! I DARE you to try your hand at defeating King Zeno and his minions!
Fantastic game!
At first I burned through marines like a teenager with a dad's credit card and got frustrated, but as I stewed and thought about it I kept coming back and was always glad I did! Everything button, item, and feature in this game has a purpose, and as you learn how to use them one by one it becomes addicting. Just remember to watch the weather, beam up the best items, and as you weaken the barrier shield you can still choose to spawn at earlier drop locations!
Once I got to the point where I was no longer just throwing marines into the meat grinder I started a new invasion, and suddenly my marines were lasting 30, 45, even 60 minutes. Levels that were once unbearably hard are now a breeze thanks to familiarity and my stuff being almost fully upgraded. But then I venture forward into undiscovered territory and the challenge returns as I discover more to be learned.
Thanks a lot devs! You've now taken 28 hours of my life and are going to be taking a lot more until I beat this game.
Well polished, charming, decent level of depth
Pretty cool roguelite sidescroller with some xcom elements like research and cover system, will elaborate to the review once i get more into it, i like the artstyle
I haven't gone very far yet - and progression seems a bit grindy tbh - but it's very fun and keeps me coming back.

I enjoy this as it reminds me of playing one of those side scrolling classic iMac games.
Levels can get repetitive as there is very little randomization. But the combat is classic old fun.
The resource looting mechanics can use some rework. You only can carry so much resources at a time and only provided with only 4 beamers (to beam up loot to your base) per run. You can't pick up additional loot beams, unless you find a dead comrade from the last level that was carrying beamers. It could be nice if there are checkpoints. Like being able to the Zeno's beamer to beam up resources material loot only at the very least. I think that could fix the balance.
Which leads me to the next thing. Being able to experiment and craft things is worthless, since you end up with so little resources.
In summary after a repetitive level design and unbalanced loot mechanics, it can burn you out quickly. Best to play in small bursts. However the classic gameplay loop makes up for it.
I'd say get it when it goes on sale or more content (such as level biomes etc) has been added and loot mechanics has been reworked.
The devs have released a gem of a game! The game is fun so far and is quite challenging(managed to get to the 1st elevator only). The storyline is corny as hell and reminds me a lot of starship troopers but in a good way. The cut scenes are really funny and the zeno king's jab at you dying everytime brings a smile to my face :) I'll update the review once I play through some more.
update 1: This game gives you no quarter T.T The first underground bit is quite hard if you aren't prepared. But then again, that's the point is it not? The game requires you to manage your inventory in such a way that you strike a balance between being deadass slow but armored and hit like a tank OR be light as a feather and strike your foes with the fury of a.. feather. Nevertheless, I think I found a good game to unwind and in a way is rather relaxing or maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment :P
