The main game takes place in the world of Ethistos where after a very long lasting peace between the known races of the world a horde of unknown entities called the First Shadow invade. This entities use powerful magic to completely engulf the capital cities of every kingdom. After the initial surprise the main kingdoms in Ethistos form a great alliance to strike back. They repeal the invaders and then march to where the source of the First Shadow seems to be. After some time communication with the army stops. At the same time attacks from the First Shadow also stop. In this state of chaos a plea for help is issued to any able adventure to understand what happen and more importantly find out how to dissolve the shadow fields around the cities of Ethistos.

Just boring. There's very little enemy variety and the later dungeons are just mashing through giant rooms and corridors absolutely filled with the same 10 enemies. On enemy spellcaster turns they have a little missile shooting animation that takes like a quarter of a second, which turns into a huge pain in the ass when you're fighting through a room with 10 of them that shoot every turn. Despite that there was pretty much no chance of dying as long as I didn't just sit there.

An ok roguelike. Pretty straightforward and is fine enough on sale. I got it for $3 and had a decent time. Good for a change of pace if you get a bit tired of the classic favorites.
The game is decent but honestly the UI and scaling of evrything. Evrything is REALY big makes it feels like a mobile game. Also the game loop no matter gameplay version is clearing map, buying/selling to random merchant, going down next level. Yes this is most rogue-like but theres no real extra. All you have is attack abilities. You can strategize your recovery but thats it. Feels like a lesser version of ToME.

I'm kinda on the fence about this one, but Steam only lets me up or down thumb, so I'll rate it a recommend because I got it for $2, and at over 6 hours invested that's my money's worth.
As far as the traditional roguelike genre goes, I found Rogue Empire trivial. Without even using any "Soul Essence" perks, I beat the the first "Dungeon of Fate" with a human Warrior on the first try, started the main "shadow" campaign with a troll Mage and found it was leaning just as easy.
Throughout, Rogue Empire acted like, if you know to rest to restore your hit points fully between engagements and drag groups of enemies into hallways where they can only engage you one at a time, you're an absolute master of the traditional roguelike genre and should be rewarded with victory every time.
To be fair, I didn't try the, "challenge dungeon" mode, and maybe higher difficulty versions are a bit closer to the, "Hard as nails" difficulty the genre is more popularly known for.
But maybe you're tired of cheap deaths. Maybe you just want to win and not scratch your head if your latest death was due to RNG or you overlooking your options. Along those lines, Rogue Empire will deliver.
I bounced off of ToME 4 and some of the older roguelike titles because their clunky, outdated UIs made it hard for me to stay engaged. This one, though, hits the sweet spot. It keeps that classic roguelike depth while feeling modern and approachable enough for me to actually enjoy. The interface doesn’t get in the way of the gameplay, which makes a huge difference. Instead of fighting the controls or the menus, I can just dive into the game itself. It feels like the devs respected the traditions of the genre but also recognized what needed updating to keep it fun and playable today. That balance of old-school challenge with modern accessibility is what really makes it click for me.

Reminds me a little of some other Roguelikes, but slightly better. Some other Roguelikes feel punitive & unnecessarily unfriendly to new players, while this one is a little more plain *fun*... though apparently it can be quite challenging if you'd like it to be. It does have significant autoexplore issues, item/enemy visibility issues, and unnecessary complexity that hold it back from a higher score.
Rogue Fable 3 is much better in almost every category. It'll be tough for another Roguelike to ever dethrone RF3. Maybe possibly RF4 will.

- You can actually change movement/autoexplore speed. This is *huge* for me as I hate when it's so fast my character is effectively teleporting & I don't know how they got there
- Lots of character stats, equipment slots, etc. There's a lot of depth, but it's not overwhelming
- Nice color palette. Not boring or murky like many games
- I love the glowing effects you see with some spell effects, leveling up, portals and whatnot
- Really cool levelup sequence. You also get "cards" which are semi-random skills, usually passives but not always
- Has a combat log, which is fantastic for knowing what's going on and for learning the game

- Characters extremely ugly with massively huge heads. I wish there were more character appearance options since you're staring at them for countless hours
- Good enemy variety, but it feels bizarre. Why on earth are all these different things working together in the same room/level? Rogue Fable 3 does this much better with 4 levels at a time with a theme of enemies

- Biggest one: it's often very difficult to see items on the ground. Sometimes it's because the height of the tile in front of it blocks your view of it, sometimes it's because background items like rocks look like items, and sometimes it's because it's a similar color as the background. Autoexplore does take you to items on the ground, but only once so if you're not paying enough attention, you could miss stuff. At least gold is automatically looted
- Similarly, sometimes enemies are hard to see because they blend in and/or are partly shadowed due to partial vision (though your character knows they're there)
- Autoexplore takes you to the previous exit when a level is cleared. Rather annoying when you want to go forward, not back... which is almost all the time
- If going back to a previous level, autoexplore takes you to every little thing you had to drop because you couldn't carry it or because it wasn't worth enough to pick up. Very annoying
- Autoexplore stops for barrels, which never seem to have anything useful in them
- Can't stop autoexplore once it's going
- Too difficult to learn new spells early on
- Tons and *tons* of unnecessary items and spells. Rogue Fable 3 is much better at this with fewer but more versatile spells and with fewer garbage items
- Locked door mechanics are unnecessary. Why does the Unlock spell take health from the caster?? Why so many keys? Why does kicking a door do more damage vs literally breaking my leg when exploring on the world map? None of it makes sense and none of it adds to the enjoyment of the game
- Energy system isn't explained and is altogether unnecessary
- Druids can't use any ranged weapons at all? Not even a staff? I don't remember it warning me of that. Lame
- All pets kinda suck. Either they don't follow you or you have to keep casting something to teleport them, and/or they're quite weak. Also, Druids likely won't be learning any summon for a long time, and Mages not for a very long time
- Dev seems so concerned with "balance" that it makes the game less fun for most classes. It's unfortunate
- Boss fights aren't terribly fun
I just beat this game as a Warrior and had a blast! I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes this genre. It is well-balanced and has a large variety of items, skills and attributes. If anyone has any questions about this game, I'd be happy to answer them. Well done developer!

this is a rogue game that tries to be as fair as possible (instead of assuming that you will play 500 hours to learn its most obscure secrets and will eventually make a perfect run in order to beat it)
it is very class based, in the sense that the most important decission is your class from where your skills and most of your stats derive, the base game offers assassin, ranger, druid and mage. it makes the game quite replayable because playing as a mage is totally different in terms of strategy and feeling that playing a ranger or a druid.
the good thing is that if you are careful and you chose the skills accordingly when you level up the game is doable (at least for easy and normal, i have not played in hard mode)
there is a bit of meta progression in the sense that once you complete the game or you die you acumulate a currency that unblocks small improvements, nothing game-breaking but makes your chars better as you make a few runs
the graphics are crispy and the ui is good enough (easily accessible quick keys and no weird shortcut keys to do basic things, almost all the usual things can be done easily with the keyboard or keyboard and mouse)

Twenty five years ago, I would have played this for hundreds of hours. But great as it is, I apparently have only played it 7.7 hours after two years.
As someone who has already beaten both Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup and ToME4 that this game takes its mechanics from, I can testify that this is just an inferior game to those that inspired it. Nearly every semi-original idea that this game has over the others does not fit in very well and seems poorly designed. Potions that temporarily raise a certain stat? Why? Have we not grown out of this already? To top it off, I have already encountered a numerous amount of bugs during my 2 hours short gameplay and even without them, the game was just too dull for me to go on.
Hard pass, just because there are SO much better paid alternatives and they are even much cheaper. Just to name Rogue Fable III and Path of Achra as examples.
The controls are really awkwrard, and the visual design of the characters are really character / not the correct scale with the environment. The game mechanicsi itself are good, but the game is pretty poor.
Great roguelike dungeon crawler with nice rpg elements. Some builds are more difficult to master than others, but some of the classes and races are quite unique. It gets a little tiresome near the end of the main campaign, because of the huge amounts of enemies, but overall it's a great experience.
Great turn based dungeon crawler, graphics are pretty nice compared to many in the ''traditional rougelikes'' genre, with a decent number of races, I would prefer more classes (I come from ADOM). There is an infinite dungeon mode that each level enemies get a buff for each level depth it's quite nice. Campaign maps. Each game played gives an amount of currency which you can spend on perma-buffs for future characters generated.
One of the best character levelling systems I have ever seen.
Carefully designing your character through cards, potions and essence unlocks makes this title one of the best rougelikes out there.

Als "Rogue Empire" 2019 herauskam (und ich es auch gekauft habe), habe ich es mehr oder weniger links liegengelassen. Wahrscheinlich habe ich kurz zuvor zu viele Stunden mit "ADOM" verbracht, dass mich kurz darauf ein anderer Roguelike-Crawler so hätte begeistern können. Fünf Jahre später habe ich "Rogue Empire" jetzt einmal richtig begonnen - und es ist wirklich klasse. Mir gefällt der Art-Style, die Möglichkeit, dicht ins Geschehen hineinzoomen und die Figuren bewundern zu können. Mir gefallen die Klassen und Fähigkeiten und mir gefallen die zufälligen Perks in Kartenform, die man bei jedem Levelaufstieg bekommt, denn das motiviert höllisch. "Rogue Empire" zieht bei Fans des Genres ohne jeden Zweifel!
This game could be a nice game, but there are too many QoL and/or polish missing, stuff that's a give in other similar games, and for this reason I don't feel like recommending it. If there was a "neutral" vote, I would rather give that, but since there isn't...
So, these are the things that are irking me the most currently (after roughly 1 hour of play):
1) As a ranger, I hit the key to throw my arrow and point to an enemy, shoot my arrow.
In other similar games, your last living target gets saved so that next time you attempt to shoot an arrow, the cursor jump immediately on top of them.
In this game, my cursor goes to a random crate nearby, often wasting me a turn and an arrow, awful for a game where a 1-turn mistake could cost your run, and this feels like the game tripping you up on purpose.
2) The whole rendering system. If you don't have the zoom at just that one precise zoom level, then every movement generate a lot of vertical or horizontal bands on the background sprite, as the rendering tries to match the sprites to the screen pixels.
It's visually awful and just plain uncomfortable to see, I can't even describe properly how much this is bothering me.
3) No slider for the Font size. The font is so ridiculously big is making reading everything slower than it should be.
And this goes also for the UI (especially the log tab), it's cluttering the whole thing.
There is absolutely no need for a hotkey bar that takes the whole bottom part of the screen, it's simply too big - and if it was made smaller, the log tab could coexist at the bottom of the screen with it (as most game do) eliminating most of this cluttered feeling. This is a clear hint the game was developed to be played on a tablet or small screen device, and ported to PC without properly adapting things to a PC screen size.
Expect everything to look HUGE, you can probably tell already by the screenshots, if you just open them fullscreen.
4) Sometimes you want to use the mouse pointer to hover on a "buff" on the top left and read the description, but then you want to keep playing with your numpad and would like the mouse pointer to disappear as soon as you touch a numpad key, and in many roguelikes it works like that, I was playing Dungeonmans just today and it was that way. In here, you either hide the mouse pointer and can't easily check the buffs, or you don't and you move the pointer out of the way manually every single time =_=
5) There is a "Button Cursor" option you can enable that shows a cursors you can drive with the directional keys to navigate menus without the need of a mouse. Even with the "Button Cursor" enabled and visible, the way it works is clunky and counter-intuitive.
Intuitively (and in most games similar to this) you would use your numpad to move around in menus like the inventory etc..., but in this game, in any of those instances you need to take your hands off the numpad and move to the arrow keys in order to operate this cursor. Man... just... why?! x_x
I've played only 1 hour so far so I'm sure had I played more, I would have found yet more things.
The leveling up system with RNG cards felt very fun for a roguelike, but all the things mentioned above are downgrading this game from "Enjoyable" to just "Playable", at least for me.
This stuff hasn't been rectified so far in 5 years the game was out, so I don't really expect anything changing at this point and this means I can't fully recommend it to you people.
I have hundreds of hours in games like Tome, Rogue's Tale, SoTS: The Pit, Dungeonmans etc... I'm sure many people can overlook those things mentioned above, but for me personally, on this one I had to ask for a refund because I couldn't stand those problems.

I am constantly on the search for new Rogue-likes. Trying to find that perfect one. For me that perfect one is ToME (Tales of Maj'Eyal) , and I'm always on the look out for other's like it.
Many come close, but just don't do it for me. Well Rogue Empire is the best I've found to date, to compare to ToME.
Granted I think it's biggest issue, is the interface. It's big and clunky. Almost gave up on it at the start, for that reason. Give it a minute. Actually play it. You'll realize with the "X" key, to explore fast on the maps, and the depth of the classes.
The level up system is incredible. Best I've seen in a long time. Makes me excited to keep playing and try new builds and new classes.
I'm really hoping to see new content in the future. This games deserves the praise, and the love. It should be 10x the size it is (both in content), and in it's player base. All Rogue-Like fans should be flocking to this in my opinion. Especially if you are a fan of ToME.

Awesome game. It's got great music, interesting monsters and race/class builds with randomized ability progressions, and fun combos.
I am having a lot of fun with this title! Dying is part of the fun in this game. It leads you to more builds and being able to try what works for you. Playing as a mage can be a challenge as you can starve to death when you over rest vs how much food you can find or buy.
The only draw back in the game is not enough merchants. You can take an ability that helps you summon a merchant. Their money is limited and so is their stock.
I would like to see the smaller towns you pass through have an option to buy some food for the trip. It would have to be also limited as not to take away from the challenge of having food. I really enjoy that survival feature. You can get some abilities that work very well with others in synergies.
Warriors are a lot of fun to start off with. Space bar X2 to wait two round to prepare your attack. Focus + Colossal strike with a good sledge hammer can hit up to 500HP damage! That's alotta damage for low level builds! I pair that with sword and shield to protect while preparing and switch over to Hammer when I strike!
Or you can go the Ranged to swap out for melee. If you want to take the time you can change weapons when ever needed. You can swap out for a 3-4 weapon set . You just have to open inventory and place then in slots manually.
Potions and buffs work great. Stocking up on stuff so you can use it for later...... So far I really did need them and didn't end up with 99 potions still not needed. I used up just about every scrolls and potion I could get my greedy little hands on.
Warriors need less rest, hence can stock up on food much easier than casters.
If you like these types of games I would recommend this game.
I would like to see them put some more depth into the over world. Like the option to have an open sand box mode where you can visit each tile. Each tile could open up to a random generated map that co insides with what ever the tile set it is on. You could then hunt for food, gather herbs for making potions. Cut down trees for wood to craft other things. As of right now there is no kind of crafting in the game.
Lots of spells to learn.
Would be cool if we could have enchanting or something along those lines too.

Man. I don't want to leave this negative review, but here I am. I sort of like this game. I have one BIG reason why I like it. But I have a hundred small reasons and a few mid-sized reasons why I don't.
So, let's start with the thing I like. In fact, it's the thing I love. This game has one of the best character creation choices on game start, and the best level up system in a roguelike that I have played in my life, and I have played a lot of them. Character creation is a lot of fun. Each species plays completely differently from the others, and each species has a great variety of playstyles with the classes you can choose. If you want a pure warrior, mage, rogue, archer, you've got it. If you want a hybrid, you've got it.
But it's the leveling system I really enjoy. When you level, your stats all go up a large predetermined amount depending on your species and class. For example, a Troll Warrior will get a bunch of HP, CON, STR, etc. You also get to pick from one of four minor boons, ranging from +1 to STR or CON, to maybe +2 (there are sometimes higher rarity boons you can get here that are +2 or even +3 to a stat) as well as a chunk of gold, maybe a couple of mutation potions, it's your choice, and it's semi-random. Personally, I love taking double mutation potion or +2 Fate Points on a level.
After you pick a boon, you then get to pick one of three (or four, if you're a human!) powers. These can be passive or active skills, like a heal that charges over time and can restore a fat chunk of your life, a massive damage attack, or passive abilities that give a big boost to your resistances and other such things.
I love the level up system. It beats the hell out of a skill tree, allows me to improvise, but never feels hollow or BS. You can get any random ability from a huge pool of species and class abilities, and almost all of them feel good and viable. Sometimes you're wielding a strong 2H weapon, but you only get offered 1H options or a shield/ranged option. That kind of sucks, but you can just switch to something more appropriate!
...
Well. That's it. That's about all the good I have to say about Rogue Empire.
The character creation is great. The leveling up is great.
...Now for the bad stuff.
- The maps are boring, repetitive, and samey.
- The enemies are boring, repetitive, and samey.
- The equipment is boring, repetitive, and samey. You can find legendary items sometimes, but it never feels impactful. You can play for two hours and get 20 levels deep into the challenge dungeon and the items appearing don't feel all that much stronger than those from level 2 and 3.
- Enemies go from dying in one hit in the early game to taking FOREVER to kill in the mid and especially end game. If you get some ability that deals 4x damage, it goes from a powerful ability to snipe elites and bosses to an ability you have to spam 2+ times to kill one random mook in the hallway. God forbid you NORMAL attack enemies. You'll need all day to kill a half dozen of them!
I hate the UI in this game. It's hideous. It's huge, clunky, and hurt my eyes. It feels kind of plastic, too. Like it's just a bunch of JPEGs smashed together, or as if it was made for a sideways phone screen.
The UX isn't great either. It's easy to misclick enemies, to accidentally wait in place instead of running away, etc. For some reason, the UI is HUGE but if you right click on terrain, some teeeeeeny little buttons and words pop up.
The game allows you to set higher frame rates. This is good.
But the game CHUGS on the most random stuff. For example, if you go to the Controls screen, the game LAGS when you try typing in a word to search, such as 'auto' for auto-attack. The game will lag for 3-4 seconds while it searches the 'massive' list of, like... 30 commands. Why the hell does the control menu chug like a Bethesda title? What lack of optimizations are going on under the hood?
In conclusion, I wish this game was better. I could see myself sinking time into a game like TOME, DCSS, or some other roguelike if they incorporated the character creation and level up system from Rogue Empire. It's a shame such a great system is wasted on a game with such middling gameplay.

Rogue Empire is a solid traditional roguelike and RPG mix, that has some fresh ideas, but it is kept down by repetition (lack of enemy varieties, location varieties and etc.). On the positive side the game is very accessible to play and has good graphics and leveling up system. I do recommend it, but it has some obvious flaws.

Not very good in my opinion when compared to the many, many other traditional roguelikes available. I've tried almost all of them, even the wacky stuff like IVAN. I came back to try the new engine and it's still buggy, but better than the old even buggier engine where it was impossible for me to remap keys. If you're desperate for more roguelikes this could be worth a try on sale, but skip the recommended starter dungeon. In that mode you're stuck as human warrior which was dull to play, it takes 3-4 hours to finish, and on normal difficulty I had only a single time where I thought I might be in danger through all 20 floors.
Beware that in the main overworld game mode it seems there's some counter that increases with time passage. Not sure what happens when it fills but the lore makes it sound like a game over. It was already at 1% in the short time it took me to get to the starter town.
Regardless, if you don't like the feeling of being constrained by time then give the game a pass. There's also a hunger system which limits time. It was a non-issue in the starter dungeon and I had more food than I'd ever need, but it depletes much, much faster in the normal game mode. Resting to heal will starve you very quickly.
The level up skill system isn't my style, as you're given random ability cards every level where you get to pick between 3 options (or 4 with spending meta progression points you can get). I say ability cards, but there's not always ability options. Sometimes it's just basic stat increases but other times it's things that seem mandatory like 40% magic resist (which can increase to 80% if you pull the next level card later). But remember it's random what comes up so you might not get something that could make a huge difference for your character. There aren't very many choices though so that might be less of an issue unless you get unlucky. I was level 12 when I finished floor 20, so as the mandatory human which gets an additional card pick every 4 levels, I only had 3 abilities I could use and the rest were passive.
The interface is bad with everything being overly large and no resolution options. I have an ultrawide monitor so the tops and bottoms of some screens is cut off and there's odd overlapping on some top left UI stuff, but nothing that causes the game to be unplayable. The fog of war seems to be on the highest z-level, so if a monster's hp bar overlaps it you can no longer see it, and that's the only way to see their health. The look function is basically useless and doesn't give any monster info, not even its name. Even a basic feature like splitting stacks isn't available so when your ammo, potions, and other stackable items become too big and you're over encumbered you either have to ditch the entire stack of an item or find some other creative way to lower encumbrance. The inventory is also incredibly clunky and trying to use some items is a lesson in frustration. One example is trying to recharge a wand with mana gems which was trial and error clicking on things because there is no good visual feedback.
Auto-explore is really bad, taking random long routes to explore the far side of the map when an unexplored hall or unopened door is next to me (and no they were not locked doors). Auto-explore also stops even if an enemy isn't in sight but is unseen around a corner, and most importantly it just likes to not stop exploring at random times. It sometimes stops at barrels and crates, sometimes not. Worst is it can have issues with long range enemies where it aggros an archer then continues to auto-explore while you're being shot. Speaking of locked doors, it seems like you can just kick them all open for a minor loss in health. The only times I used a key were by accident.
There are so many other roguelikes out there that I can't see myself spending any more time with this one. With that said, some people have a ton of hours in this game so there must be some redeeming qualities somewhere in there.
I have played 1k hours, with the vast majority as a human warrior, playing the campaign on the hardest difficulty. I have had some really nice wins, as well as quite a few sudden run ending catastrophes. One of my favorites.

Hey there, i have finished the game on normal difficulty (latest version with dark hero dlc). For the playthrough i chose a warrior class, seem to be the only one for my taste to bear the end game with..defeated the shadow fiend and the elemental ambassador (only 1.6% of players have this achievement).
Here are my fast impressions of the game. Only gameplay opinions, either you like the oldschool graphics or not.
Early Game (Level 1-4):
-great new stuff to discover in a fresh game
-fun to experiment with different characters
-ok balance wise
Mid Game (Level 5-11):
-gets very repetitious (combat/enemies)
-items/leveling up/enemies unbalanced, its still somewhat ok
-you still wanna know how this journey ends, what comes next
End Game (Level 12-20):
-the combat gets atrocious
-balancing is completely off in all aspects
-you just want the game to end
I cant recommend the game even though the early game was promising. The game balance is just bad, there is nothing to discuss here, i doubt this will be worked hard on in future versions of the game so it seems to be dead, Leaderboards also not working anymore.
This game rocks. It has a lot of depth and sweet abilities, different upgrade paths, gear customization and a lot of different systems going on. Don't listen to the haters talking about the other major roguelikes, they have had a lot more years of development time and this one keeps getting better all the time. Well worth a pickup.
It's an average roguelike that's missing a good deal of depth, furthermore seems to lack future updates.
I really wanted to like this game, and at first it was very enjoyable however its still pretty buggy and that in a roguelike with no save & load can screw you up badly.
I got into situations where it was impossible to advance a number of times, stairs or even bosses that just wouldn't show up thus you couldn't continue playing.
I would be able to forgive that if the game itself was good enough but sadly it isn't.
It's not bad either, just mediocre.
The end of the main campaign was a painful slog of not being able to kill the enemies and vice versa.
Your attacks can fail, or do no damage or get inmobilized constantly, but because the enemies focus on disabling you instead of killing you its just you, the player, watching your character slowly and painfully killing the same generic mobs over and over again in the same generic dungeons over and over again.
The game has some good ideas, particularly the bosses are cool when they are not bugged but to be honest why waste your time and money on a subpar game when there are so many jewels with thousands of hours to offer in the roguelike genre?
TLDR: Play ADOM or TOME instead

A perfect game to play with one hand while holding a baby in the other one.
More seriously, it's an old-school game in the vein of the classic text-based games like rogue, Moria, and Angband, but with pretty graphical tiles. If you like Tales of Maj'Eyal, this might be for you. To start, pick from several species of humanoids like trolls, elves, and naga, and several different classes that play quite differently. You get random class powers at level up; you pick from a set of 3 each time, plus gaining attributes, hit points, and mana points. Even though the campaign is the mostly the same each time you play it, you'll find it's hard enough that you will want to play through multiple times to try to finally beat that boss your other dude got stuck on.
Still haven't tried the challenge dungeon.
Rogue Empires isn't a bad game... it is just that much better rogue-like games exist (like Tales of Maj'Eyal (TOME)). I would only recommend this game if you played top roguelikes like TOME or ADOM and want something similar or a little different.
I was on the fence about buying this game, but I'm glad I did! Really fun!
This game cherry picks from a few other games. Basically it's ToME with Tangledeep tileset. Theres a bit of Dungeons of Dredmore in here too with monster zoos and the general feel of the game. If you like any of these games just buy it. If you like Roguelikes in general this is an easy one to recommend. If you are totally new to the genre there are probably more approachable games but this is one of the best TomE-alikes out there.
Just too many bugs. I tried four runs and two of them had frustrating, unplayable bugs. It's a good concept. Maybe it will be good in a few years if the devs keep updating it.

Enjoying the game a lot. I understand why ADOM experts dislike it: if you can win ADOM, can do Troll Archmage and other funny stuff, then Rogue Empire looks casual
For me noob, having 50 dead adventurers in ADOM and 0 wins, it was nice to play a rogue-like without unexpected deaths.
Rogue Empire kills your characters gently: if you see enemies hit you heavily, you forced to use many potions, and you still pushing forward - you will be dead soon. if you are powerful enough to play smoothly - you are pretty much safe. No "superenemy" will pop-up and wipe you. As a result, I managed to win the main company with the first character I created, and it was not very easy - several times I escaped from very deadly situations
So far, having a blast. Will update as I go...definitely scaling, so will see how this run lasts. Haven't seen if there is any meta game or something that will support future games. -M

After reading this was like ToME and ADOM I was pretty excited to try it out. Unfortunately, it's really lacking in QoL features, which I don't find acceptable in a modern roguelike. The game felt extremely tedious. Bad control scheme (although you can rebind), no auto-loot except gold, you have to press P multiple times to pickup multiple items on the same tile, and there's no way to toggle loot names or easily see loot while exploring - you have to hold shift, and it seems to drop once you move (so only while stationary, and only nearby objects). These are just some of the annoyances I experienced in the 20 minutes I played.
It seems like a decent enough game, I just can't recommend it when there are so many great traditional roguelike options out there with better QoL and likely better gameplay. Check out ToME, DCSS, Zorbus and others if you haven't played them.

My Dwarf Warrior learned a spell, and I don't know how. How can a warrior learn a spell?
Rogue Empire is a decent entry into the traditional roguelike genre: It meets all of the criteria of the genre, there's a good variety of classes, some of the abilities are pretty interesting, and it plays pretty well. That said, it really doesn't stick out from the competition all that much and I don't really feel a lot of personality or uniqueness from the game. Is that a bad thing? Rogue Empire doesn't make any pretensions of it testing the limits of the genre or anything like that, and thus I got mostly what I expected. It makes for a good break from your main roguelike game of choice.
Giving this game a positive recommendation for people who are into traditional roguelikes and know what to expect. Don't expect anything special or unique, but you will still have the good old roguelike fun you've had in ToME, Elona, or ADOM.
P.S.: shoutout to the one man dev team for still trying to update the game while raising a toddler, how you found the time to do so is astounding
68 hours in and still haven't come close to beating the game. I'm not sure if it's because I suck or because I try to rush. Either way, it's addicting. I like the level up system even though I think humans are op for their racial bonus of getting bonus cards. My only complaint honestly is it seems like melee gets the shaft when it comes to some of the boss mechanics where as range can continue to shoot while melee is just having to chase the boss around trying to get a hit in.
Good game. Bad English translation. I'll help you if you need. It's not the best traditional RL I've played, but it's not bad at all, and it's light years ahead of the new ADOM game.

Wow, is this game good. At the time of writing, I've put in 25 hours into this. In. Two. Days.
As an introverted D&D nerd, this game appeals to me on several levels, but mainly, it gives me my dungeon-crawling fix without having to deal with other people!
On a basic level, it functions similarly to other quick dungeon-crawlers: Pixel Dungeon, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, etc.
The granularity of the characters and gameplay is where it shines: levelling up, choosing 'feats', balancing your equipment.
All the way around, spectacular; even more so that it can really be played with just a mouse (except for menuing)!
Ultimately, if you're looking for your fix, you won't go wrong with it.

This game is a hot mess in someways, yet still manages to be fun and engaging. It took me several hours to understand how not to die (resting full before each battle). Once I understood this, the other abilities and mechanics started to open up. It goes from a plodding bore of bashing into enemies to a much more strategic turn based affair. You need to use the environment to your advantage whether that's funneling mobs into a hallway to fight 1v1, sneaking around a corner with a charge or steath or just blowing up an entire small room with mage. There is a pickaxe that allows you to destroy parts of the environment, but it's not well implemented.
The theme of the game is all over the place with heavy metal music one minute, then midi-style old RPG music the next. It detracts from what could have been a very immersive experience. The enemies make no sense such as an alien, a vampire and a rat fighting side by side. However, their designs are colorful and easy to identify. Most importantly, they each have a unique set of skills and behaviors. The zoom feature is really over the top allowing your sprite to take up then entire screen or zoom out to see the whole map. This is fortunate, because the menu map is so dark is almost impossible to use.
While this game is a very mixed bag, it's ultimately enjoyable. If you like RPGs or Roguelikes, you could do much worse than this game, especially if it's on sale.
Solid game, very similar to T.O.M.E. or ADOM but being newer has less options for classes to play. The UI is great (you dont have to memorize 300 keybinds and dig through menus and submenus to find stuff like some older rogue-likes). Overall would recommend it to anyone that enjoys this type of game.

Это достаточно слабый, но вполне себе классический roguelike, с относительно типичным сюжетом про силы тени, которые пытаются поработить мир и нашего ГГ который единственный, кто может их остановить.
Почему Rogue Empire слабенький рогалик? Потому что у него мало механик, а те что есть, не сильно то сбалансированы, по сути, есть только простейшая ролевая система с 7 статами и вполне типичными характеристиками, типа шанс крит атаки, сила крит атаки, шанс уворота и так далее. Из "новенького" тут только четко выраженная система скорости и энергии, которая задаёт количество энергии требуемое на использование оружия. Что позволяет нанести 2 удара кинжалом за то время, пока наносится 1 удар двуручным молотом. Не хватает только какого-то усреднённого показателя кол-ва урона в 1000 ед энергии.
В дополнение к этому идут абилкии которые персонажи выучивают по мере повышения уровня (часть классовых, часть универсальных) и заклинания, если вы играете за друида или мага. На это сверху докручиваются очень лайтово реализованные механики вроде:
- Голод
- Открытия и закрытия замков
- Торговли
Также, есть достаточно неплохо реализованная система улучшений после смерти, чтобы следующий ваш персонаж мог начать более сильным.
Всё, больше игре вам предложить нечего и это достаточно прискорбно. Играется как жевачка не требующая полного погружения и принятия сложных решений, я в параллель с игрой смотрел аниме на втором мониторе.
По моим впечатлениям, есть очень серьёзный дисбаланс классов и расов:
- Расы. Дело в том, что часть рас, оказывают влияние на весь геймлей за персонажа, и дают бонусы, которые в процессе игры не получить буквально никак. А часть - просто дают прибавку к стартовым статам, которую достаточно легко получить в процессе прохождения.
- Классы. Друиды, особенно если получить форму дракона - имба редкостная. Зачем играть за война, если того же друида вы будуте делать всё тем же воином, но который умеет применять магию, в том числе лечится например? Рейнджер становится достаточно имбовым классом если брать расу котиков, с их бонусом к скорости персонаж рейнджер по сути может совершать несколько действий за 1 ход противника, включая босса. Что позволяет ему убивать некоторых боссов только за счёт того, что те никогда к нему не притронутся.
- Голод. Ни разу не было ситуации, что персонажу нечего жрать. Скорее был вопрос, когда уже появится торговец, чтобы сбагрить ему излишки еды.
- Открытие замков дверей. Ключи и спеллы нафиг не нужны, если вы научились лечить себя или имеете высокую регенерацию.
- Торговля. Покупать особо нечего за исключением редких случаев дропа каких-то вещей +20 к какому-то стату и эликсиров которые навсегда увеличивают стат. Ближе к концу игры персонаж будет ходить с миллионами голды которую некуда тратить.
- Есть ещё таймер на конец мира. Но он сразу достаточно медленно "капает", лучше бы было сделать его в 10-20 раз быстрее, сильно снижать скорость его работы между смертями и может завязать какие-то события или квесты на очистку мира. Но он тупой и скучный.
Итого
Игра достаточно слабенькая и дисбалансная. Механики не развитые и посредственные, некоторые были сделаны чисто для галочки и влияют на игровой процесс. Полной своей стоимости игра не заслуживает. Но если будет по скидке, можно и взять. Лично для меня она подстегнула настроение снова поиграть в ADOM или ToME, ибо там куда сложнее и интересней.

A more straightforward kind of roguelike with relatively limited controls, a good intro to someone who wants to get into the genre - the 3-4 hour Eghoss campaign serves as a good introduction while the main campaign awaits those who want to dive in deeper. Colourful spritework and quite an expansive soundtrack.

-Очень много ГРИНДА, чтобы полностью отыграть кампанию может и 20 часов не хватить. Часами однообразные башни и подземелья зачищать, изредка слоняясь по лесу или пустыне.
-Рудиментарный сюжет. В Tales of Maj Eyal и Stobeshard полно лора, рогалик не значит игра без сюжета.
Игра неплоха, но ничего экстраординарного. Рогалик как он должен быть. Тем не менее, я считаю что сейчас жанр рогаликов уже созрел для процедурно генерируемого сюжета и географии глобальной карты. Короче в общем и целом 7/10, для ценителей рогаликов сойдёт.
Plenty of classes and abilities. Fast paced movement and combat is a plus.
After 10-15 lvs you kinda realize how repetetive it is tho... to the point I'ts no longer fun.
Same mobs over and over, just slightly different surroundings.
This is a very good Roguelike, where between getting killed (Or WINNING the first scenario, more on that later.) you get Soul Points, which you can invest into stat bonuses for next time. None of the bonuses are game-breaking, sadly, but they do make each one just a little bit easier.
There are a variety of races, some seem to be tailor-made for a given Class, others are good if you want a challenge. Troll Mage, for instance? I still haven't figured out how to unlock the Insectoids.
Graphics are entirely zoomable, and you can mostly move the map around with your mouse--if you can make it figure out you're not trying to move your character there! It mostly plays like Stone Soup, which is pretty much THE Freeware Roguelike. The difference is, the sprites here are (Or at least CAN BE) much bigger and more detailed, and the satiety/hunger system is more fleshed out. Unfortunately, NONE of the races shut off the hunger system entirely. BUT if you keep your char fed, but not overfed, your health gradually gets better, indicated by 1-3 plusses in your green heart, which give you bonuses depending on your Class!
There are 3 scenarios. The first one is a kind of "introduction", locking you into a hapless Human Warrior, but it is simpler, in that there are only a finite number of floors, and no overworld.
The second is a massive sprawling adventure through a HUGE overworld, and some dungeons are linked to towns--as in they exit into the towns--which is not immediately apparent from the map. However, there is no indicator which dungeons are easy or hard, which led to me going to a nearby dungeon WAY over my head. Death was swift and painful.
The final scenario is Challenge Dungeon. Not sure how many floors it has, each floor adds one more bonus to the monsters, penalty to you, and/or makes the game grid smaller. However, since the monsters get MUCH harder the deeper you go, you will not live to worry about that.
All in all, this is one of the better Roguelikes I've played, and I've played everything from the original ROGUE (Now sold for $2.50 instead of freeware), to ADOM!
an extremely strong traditional roguelike with amazing amounts of love, dedication and quality to it. where the new ADOM failed to be, this game succeeded and more. you can absolutely tell the developer cares about what they're doing and this game seems to recieve many updates that add real impactful things. The artwork is also lovely and very pleasing to look at. I am not usually an art person but I cant help but really love some of the player sprites, basically all the enemies ive seen and the card arts are really eye catching too. good music as well, fun varied classes that all feel different to play which again is something games like ADOM failed to do.
This game and ToMe are my favourite roguelikes. I find myself getting sucked into this game for hours at a time completely losing track of the outside world. its rare I find a game like that, I always find myself sitting playing a game but only half paying attention and listening to a video. but this is one of those few games where the sound is always on, and the video in the background always gets paused so that I may fully concentrate on and listen to this game. im not very good at it and I die early at the moment, I only just got the "get to level 5!" achievement today but im learning and its a rewarding experience
I finally completed it with an Otwok Warrior! This game is tough as nails, but very fun. Highly recommend it if you like games like ADOM, Dungeonmans, Tales of Maj'Eyal, etc.
Rogue Empire is a good-not-great traditional roguelike which would be a good starting point in the traditional roguelike genre. So if you're new to [i]actual[/i] roguelikes, this would make a great starting point as it removes or abstracts out a lot of the byzantine aspects of older titles.
For veterans, Rogue Empire's unique wrinkle is the addition of a very simple deckbuilder style levelup process. When you level up, the game gives you base stats based on your class, then allows you to pick one of four random "Contemplations," which are usually small one-off boons. For instance, you may have the choice to pick +1 Constitution, +1 Strength, an amount of gold that would be considered "good" for your level, or special super-light, super-filling rations. It's entirely random - sometimes you might have four stat choices, sometimes you might have four item choices.
After choosing your "Contemplation," you proceed to selecting your ability, which is that gif in the description. This is a choice of 3 (expandable to 4 with some kind of persistent upgrade) different abilities randomly pulled from a pool that depends on your class. These can be passive or active in nature. You choose one and get it - simple enough.
But that's as far as the system goes. Conspicuously missing are other deckbuilder mechanics like removing or rerolling abilities you don't like via some expenditure of resources. Plus these abilities only really dictate your passives and special cooldowns - Warriors and Assassins will still be bump-attacking things to death, Hunters will be shooting things, Mages and Druids will learn spells through books, and so on. Since some abilities nevertheless have prerequisites, and since abilities are cordoned off by class, it's basically just blind talent trees. Another missed opportunity? Classes that get access to multiple pools, or even a class that gets access potentially ANY skill. That seems like such an obvious thing and yet it just doesn't exist in the game.
So for the veteran grognard, there's not a lot here except some rather vanilla fun. And it is fun! It's a solidly implemented, well-coded, very straightforward roguelike. Just don't expect anything that advances the genre like ToME or Caves of Qud, or anything that approaches the complexity of Nethack, ADOM, Angband, or DCSS.
SUMMARY: A fun roguelike with plenty of classic elements - mixed with some innovative ideas - that is "easy to pick up hard to master." Plenty of gear, combos, classes, and strategies, and unique random skill mechanics to make each game new. At the same time, it streamlines more onerous elements. A good choice if you want a "classic-like" roguelike with some twists.
Rogue Empire is very much in the vein of what we've seen before in a good way - sally forth into a procedural setting and kick evil's backside. There's classes, races, plenty of equipment, and more. Where Rogue Empire stands out is a mix of streamlining and interesting randomized character development.
The streamlining comes from discarding a few common roguelike elements. Gone are endlessly identifying potions and equipment. There's a helpful merchant magician that can reduce long hauls back to towns. Leveling and progression seem to happen at a good pace. There's a certain purity to Rogue Empire that removes the annoying and keeps the challenging.
The streamlining continues to the dungeons, which are simply randomized spaces with a bunch of stuff and enemies. This is uncomplicated, but at times dull. The challenge though is in three things: enemies, equipment, and characters
The randomized character development is a core to the game, and an interesting one. Whenever a character levels you get pre-made stats bonuses, then pick one of four random boosts, then one from 3-4 random class-related skills. No skill trees, or "gain X at y level," but surprises. This makes leveling its own game as you optimize your "draws" along with equipment and gameplay choices. You may find yourself going down unexpected paths.
Classes also have differences in abilities and cards. Every character has their own focus, rythm, and unique abilities. Each one is also interesting to play, leading to more replayability.
Equipment comes in a large variety of things, requiring you to juggle traits, weight, enchantments, speed, and more. On top of that you have scrolls, spells, and potions. If you like to figure loadouts, you'll love it - and it makes a great challenge.
Enemies start simple, then you meet more advanced versions with more abilities. Soon, you're in chaotic fights and enemies fight each other. Imagine setting yourself on fire, but then setting your enemies on fire while you fling lightning bolts.
In gameplay, it's a very strategic, turn-based, tactical game. Skills, spells, and equipment require careful choices. Your character will almost always take damage. Effects can stack and interact. It's not a game for hasty decisions - just as the game moves briskly and rewards thoughtfulness, moving fast or thoughtlessly will kill your character. It also moves fast so you can get far in a short time.
If you want different challenges, there are three game modes - an intro, a campaign, and a get-as-far-as-you-can run.
Finally, games have long-term payoff. You earn "Soul Essence" in runs that can buy boosts that last throughout later games. This means even failed runs help you the next time - and you can turn off those bonuses to go a bit hardcore!
The game's look is nice, a little unpolished, but with a delightful and colorful look in an unapologetically trope-filled fantasy world. The music is excellent. The entire package is a fun, charming experience.
There are a few flaws to be aware of:
* There are some unpolished elements of the interface, and it's not always clear how the controls work. Not unusual in Roguelikes, but not quite up to snuff fo rmodern games.
* The random dungeons have occasional glitches or oddly generated rooms.
* The dungeons are overall quite samey.
* The overworld map is lackluster.
In the end, a good, solid Roguelike game that's fast to get into, streamlined in the right areas, and honestly interesting to experience. It's a good call if you want a "classic fantasy rogeulike yet not" - familiar enough with some differences that improve the experience.

* If you want a "classic fantasy roguelike" this will fill that need and its unique elements will be a breath of fresh air.
* If you're like "classic fantasy roguelikes" but they're all too samey, this has that balance of new and old you'll enjoy.

To get it on top, i would like to see a lot more detailed combatlog.
Also detailed stats on creatures, like Hp, resists, dmg, dmg types, ect.
More detailed skill/spell description what type dmg it does what stat it benefits from?
For example assasins dagger throw, does it benefit from strenght, or from agility?
And make option for skills to be autocast.
Very solid roguelike, a bit slow to start but really fun once it gets going.
Edit : to be a little more specific, this games feels like a mix between Tales of Maj'Eyal and ADOM. You got your overland map dotted with dungeons you can dive in. You have a hunger clock (easy to manage) and a "corruption clock" ala ADOM. Everything is solid like you would expect in a roguelike, with many user friendly options.
It is very streamlined (no need to ID scrolls for exemple).
The story is just okay but it's not the selling point of these kind of games.
The character building system is very fun. You get to pick one ability (active or passive) out of 3, with some stat increase as well. It made me impatient to level up to see if I could get the build I had in mind together, while encouraging me to adapt with the cards I'm dealt with.
One thing that I've noticed that could be improved is that leveling starts off very fast but slows down a lot after level 10 or so.
All in all it's a very solid roguelike that I recommend to fans of the genre, and it works well as a first roguelike for beginners.
((As a final note, my save file got corrupted and I got in touch with the game dev who fixed the issue in a very swift and friendly manner. So if you feel like supporting a passion project from an indie dev you can't go wrong with this game)).

Moraff's Dungeons of the Unforgiven was my favorite game ages ago... and this hits that spot in such a perfect way. The BEST roguelike I've ever found, and if you loved it's ancestor, you'll be hooked immediately.

This game is awesome
I've been enjoying Rogue Empire and while it isn't perfect, and while we all have different tastes, I it is definitely a game that I can recommend to those looking for a rogue-like experience with a clear conscience.
First, I'm an old-timer who was playing rogue-likes back when the only Rogue-like around was Rogue itself. And this game does follow most, though not all, of the old traditional rogue-like conventions, plus it has a few more modern features. Like Rogue, you need to explore randomized hidden maps. Unlike rogue, there is no 'potion roulette' per se. All items are identified immediately. The game does have a recommended starter-dungeon, which serves as a rather hefty tutorial (since the starter dungeon is literally 20 floors deep, with a single quest that will likely take you a long time to complete). But there is also a campaign that contains multiple dungeons and quests, as well as a 'challenge dungeon' for those requiring a tougher experience.
Regardless, there are 3 difficulty levels, plus other options that can make for an easier or more difficult experience. Permadeath is the best way to play any rogue-like (that's how they are designed). But you can play with respawning after death if you are a newcomer to the genre.
The starter dungeon starts you as a human fighter. But later you can choose from a number of races and character classes. I've only played Fighter, Mage, and Hunter. I'm currently having a good old time playing the campaign with a level 9 hunter. The standard difficulty seems to be good for most players just starting out. But if you are very experienced, you may find that it gets TOO easy as you really get going and putting on the levels. Also, playing a mage seems to be much more difficult. Then again, I only have 10 hours of play under my belt, and my one and only mage died real quick, so take that as an uneducated thought.
One thing I really like about the game are the variety of items and artifacts. There are artifacts that improve as you level up. Items can widely vary in power. There's a lot of skills to learn, and which are available to learn will vary widely based on the RNG -- essentially, when you level up, you get to pick one (or more) special abilities, and you never know which will be available to you.
The only negative I have is that I did experience one game crash. I did try to continue after the crash, and fortunately the game had saved automatically the last time I changed dungeon level. I lost a little bit of progress, but it was little enough that I didn't feel that terrible about it. One of the highlights for me was the rare occasions that I found artifacts. I found one during the tutorial, and one (so far) during the campaign. The first one was kind of what you might expect. But the second one (which I won't spoil) gave me this awesome and totally unexpected ability. It's surprises like that which can suck you into a rogue-like game.
In short, this is a medium-difficulty, medium complexity game with an easy enough learning curve (at least for someone with rogue-like experience). It may not be for everyone. Read other reviews to get other perspectives. But I am definitely enjoying it.
That one review at the top made me buy it. Good traditional roguelike RPG, try it out!
Not easy, but with a lot of replay ability between the races and classes. The quest system could use some update love though.
The random level concept was interesting, but the ratio of passives to actives was too low. The game is okay, but other games in the genre are much better.
