Myst and Riven captivated me as a kid in the 90's, the first games I played that rose to the level of true art. They are arguably what taught me gaming can be emotional and really transport you somewhere. Now we have the technology to live-render the same caliber of graphics that made the original games so detailed and realistic. So my expectations were high, and I wasn't disappointed! I played this in VR on a Quest 2 headset through my PC. This is one of only three games I'd say you MUST play in VR.

It's obvious the original creators, Cyan, put their heart and soul into this remake. It feels so true to the originals, just with modern graphics tech, and very effective VR elements. It's like you're in the originals, but now you can look all around you and read the journals in the sun on the top of Jungle Island with the critters flying around you while the age crumbles. Any changes or updates made were subtle, unobtrusive, and positive. I just couldn't say enough good about it, this is a fantastic and faithful update to a masterpiece!

I bought Riven, the sequel to Myst, not long after it came out. I spent the first hour bumbling about in the first location, the Rotating Room just near the gold Temple dome, and its immediate surroundings. I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, so I quit, uninstalled, and gave it a thumbs down.

Someone in the comments told me I was simply not intelligent enough to understand it. That bothered me for more than a year and a half. How dare he! So I finally reloaded it and tried again! And then the first success happened: I figured out the Rotating Room, and how to use its doorways.

From there, the game was a beautiful, mysterious, curiosity-filled hunt that occupied a lot of my time and thoughts, and kept me up at night in bed thinking about solutions to some of the more challenging puzzles. Almost every location and puzzle can be found and solved fairly straightforwardly, but you have to be diligently observant for what is often right in front of you. It is pretty easy to miss some lever, or button, or passageway, so look closely and move slowly. The game is beautiful, the locations captivating in their detail and uniqueness. Some locations I found myself just pausing and enjoying the amazing environment renditions that are part of the Riven world. And while this version is an upgrade from the original Riven, the puzzles have largely been recreated, so even original Riven players will enjoy it.

There is one puzzle, near the game's climax, that was particular challenging. I had half of the solution figured out, but I did have to get a few hints from gamers out there to bring in the second half. Honestly, I still don't think my solution matched what I was seeing in terms of the clues (which for this one puzzle are unique to each play through), but once past that hurdle, it was smooth sailing.

I highly recommend folks give Riven a try, especially if you enjoy puzzle games that are highly unique. You will not be disappointed.

The game was legging non stop, i could never get anywhere without it needing time to catch up. I am not sure if this affected puzzles i was working on, was even worse after the patch was installed for the game.

I've loved Cyan games since the original Myst. I have played all of their games and am thrilled to find them on Steam. Riven has always been the most difficult of all. I found this remake on my Oculus, but since keeping personal notes in 3-D is difficult, I prefer playing on Steam in 2-D. The best part is that there is no violence in the game. I enjoy wandering around and discovering what is going on. Riven is the best of the Cyan games I've played.

It's refreshing for a game to respect my intelligence as opposed to plastering quest arrows and minimaps and popup reminders every step of the way. Riven brought me back into what captivated me about games in the first place; exploring and figuring out how a new world works in order to unlock the secrets it contains. They've done a phenomenal job of bringing the original point n click static renderings into a new life of fully explorable 3D environments, and it looks and feels amazing. The puzzles are all quite interesting without veering into the esoteric and obtuse, and as such the game rewards methodical observation and contemplation and is incredibly satisfying to crack.

Great remake. Looks amazing. The one and only thing I'd change is finding a way to use the original FMV. Maybe with an AI upscale, maybe an optional setting. But the 3D characters do look really good and animate wonderfully.

A classic puzzle game for sure...! The remake is quite impressive overall. When playing on Linux, I've noticed a few issues with static / clicking audio, but as that's not a directly supported platform, I don't blame the game for this.

Still only part-way through, but as someone previously obsessed by MYST in the 90's I had to have a go and its like the devs and designers, who were already phenomenal storytellers suddenly got given unlimited resources and made the experience of my dreams. Can't say enough good things about it. Play it and you'll see x
