Loveeeeeeeee this game and basically 100%ed it on PS3. The concept, feel and rush you get from runs is great, or at least for me! It's also great how this game was spawned.. "The idea for a backwards shooter came while creating a debugging mode for another shooter they were working on to pitch to developers."! I supported their game after this, Neverending Nightmares, in hopes that they would make another rhythm game in the future - but that never happened. :(

Retro/Grade is one of those rare games where the core concept is so clever you can't believe no one thought of it sooner — playing a side-scrolling shooter in reverse, catching your own bullets to the beat of an electronic soundtrack, feels like Guitar Hero crossed with a shmup in the best possible way. The music genuinely slaps and the gamepad vibrating to the beat adds a tactile satisfaction that keeps you locked in. That said, the visual chaos on higher difficulties is real — between enemy fire coming from behind, your own shots approaching from the front, and flashy background effects, it can feel overwhelming until you learn to filter it all out. With only 10 tracks the repetition does set in, especially if you dive deep into the 130+ challenge levels, but the core loop is mechanically tight enough to keep pulling you back. If you have any love for rhythm games and can grab this on sale, it's absolutely worth it — just maybe enable the mono color cheat if the screen starts feeling like a rave you didn't sign up for.

Amazing game. Is the reason I bought the Steam Deck recently. Needs an older version of Proton (7.0-6) to launch, and then it runs great.

Concept, execution, art design, and gameplay are just superb. Any rhythm game lives or dies by its soundtrack as far as I'm concerned, and the soundtrack by Skyler McGlothlin is also incredible. I used to rock this game's soundtrack on my old sony walkman MP3 player in the studio haha. Still holds up today. The music, the game itself. So good.

During the PS3 era I was enamored with this game enough to look up the developer 24 Caret Games which is (I believe) ostensibly one person (Matt Gilgenbach) and wanted to keep up with future projects. I never did get around to his follow up game Never Ending Nightmares (released under "Infinitap Games"). Some comments of the dev's around this game and its themes (fear, anxiety, depression) perhaps gives insight into why there are no follow projects since. Which is entirely speculation on my part. But the dev himself has made such compelling work I can't help but speculate! Now that I'm being reminded of all of this, I'll be purchasing that game as soon as I publish this review.

All that aside, if you stumbled onto this game page and like rhythm games, shmups, or just good games period (oozing with "passion project" energy) then go for it. Even at "full" price ($10) it's a deal. An overlooked game from a very interesting era of gaming that hasn't lost a step, or a beat.

Retro/Grade is what happens when a side-scrolling shooter gets absolutely blackout drunk, wakes up next to Guitar Hero, and nine months later gives birth to a time-reversing space-baby that nobody is emotionally prepared for.

At first glance you think, “Oh look, another pew-pew spaceship game, big whoop.” But then the game slaps you across the face and says: “Surprise, idiot, you’re playing this backwards.” You un-explode enemies. You un-fire bullets. You literally undo your bad decisions — something I wish I could do with my dating history and the time I ate gas station sushi.

The gameplay? Imagine if Guitar Hero and a cocaine-powered metronome had a threesome. You’re basically matching your ship to its past self like some intergalactic rhythm game, hitting notes, dodging chaos, and gracefully re-entering your past mistakes — kind of like texting your ex at 3AM, except this time it works out.

It’s stylish. It’s weird. It’s unique. It’s like playing Rock Band while your eyes are being seduced by neon space candy. And honestly? It’s fun as hell. I blasted through the beginner campaign and had a stupid grin the whole time — Retro/Grade is one of those games that makes you say, “Okay, that was weird as f**k… do it again.”

If you want something original, flashy, and rhythm-shooter sexy, buy it. Play it. Reverse-time-baby it. It’s a damn good time.

Rhythm based game set in space. You fly with your spaceship and everything goes back in time so you're playing in reverse. Catch your own bullets following the music and avoid danger. Game starts from the end so final boss is already beaten and you gonna see the credits, this is the beginning. 5 modes of difficulty and overall 10 levels, each more difficult than the previous one. Game can get pretty hard in that matter. You can reverse time (play forward) using energy to correct some of your mistakes. Music is ok but feels more like some finger tapping rhythm actually. Visually game have space so that's a plus and some glowing chimichangas. Slight recommendation, not that great but still playable and somewhat original.

This game is too underrated. It's a wonderful experience with great music, enjoyable gameplay with different ways to play, and gorgeous (if a bit distracting) visuals. I also really like the concept; a reversed shooter that's actually a rhythm game is pretty unique and it's executed perfectly. A must-play for fans of rhythm games.

One of the earliest novelties I picked up in my emotionally broken throes where I wasted so much money on Steam games, but only just now playing.

The main appeal is the premise. A rhythm game in the form of a shoot-'em-up, played in reverse. I had, and still have, no experience whatsover with either shoot-'em-ups or rhythm games, and even *I* got excited by the promise. Of course then I forgot about it for a "decade", but that's beside the point.

The gameplay is very simple. There are only two lanes, arguably counterparts to most rhythm games' directions/notes/keys/etc. You go back and forth between them, and you press- and sometimes hold- the spacebar when your shot in the presumable timeline comes up, while avoiding shots from the enemy ships. It takes some trial and error to understand- and I for one still don't understand the 'boosters' and how the multipliers work- but what you need to get through the level, at least, does eventually click.

The imagery is simple and satisfying, with futuristic graphics that sell the spaceship wars archetype. It is empty, granted, but you're supposed to be flying a spaceship, not walking through a populated city full of civilians. Yes, it has that "crunch" of an early "2010's" 3D PC game, but that's more a feature than a bug, I think- and even if I'm just telling myself that, and/or one disagrees, the game's still clear enough in sight that once you can tell which shots are the enemies' and which are yours, you can dodge or touch them in time and it becomes a matter of skill.

Also, the lower graphics mean this thing runs smoothly on my outstandingly non-gaming-oriented laptop, which is built almost exclusively for my betseferwork.

There is some flavor text for some missions that paints the protagonist, apparently named "Rick", as this narcissistic scumbag, but honestly, in these shoot-em-up games, who the heck has ever really cared about the character piloting the thing? There's no real story sequence, so you don't need to worry about the unlikability of Rick as you play.

Th really simple gameplay, timey look, and novelty of the premise have won me over. I do recommend it - though, given the shortage of individual levels (unless you count difficulty changes as entirely different levels), $10 is way too much. Wait for a steep sale; I'd say about $2, maybe $3 if you're an earnest rhythm game enthusiast.

I love both rhythm games and shoot 'em ups, so this game combining this two genres would be a blast. I enjoyed playing the campaign with a guitar, but it certainly grew boring too fast. The music is not that interesting, the graphics are pretty generic tend to turn a little too "noisy" and the challenges are extremely repetitive. It may look like an interesting premise, but I don't think it ends up working too well in the end :/

Let's face it: With how dense the gaming market is now, getting an original indie game it's own spotlight is hard. There are lots of passion projects out there that have been released, but swept away by the competition into the realm of obscurity and, ergo, loses out on so much money that they may rightfully deserve. Retro/Grade is probably one of the most tragic victims of this unfortunate fate. Not only because of its quality, but because of its development background. It was the first and only game that 24 Caret Games had ever put out. Matt Gilgenbach burned through his savings and put himself in debt for this one project. He worked 80 hours a week for around 4 years, not really knowing what life was like outside if it's development time, spending the majority of it adding so many small details and polish. It was easy to tell just how much love was put into this game... and it was all for nothing.

After playing for ten minutes, my eyes and head hurt from the cluttered mess that the graphics are.
My thumbs hurt from repeatedly spamming up and down and A on the harder difficulties.

I've already seen everything the game has to offer in 10 minutes (the rest of the recorded time was spent on idle, just dropping the trading cards). Not worth playing.

Visuals too busy to see the important information you need to react to.

Game started auto pressing the down arrow in the menu and in game. Verified files and reinstalled, and it didn't fix it.

OTHERWISE I think there is a great game hidden here. Those two things just made it unplayable to me. The music is great, and the backwards time idea is super cool when you see that after you finish a level, it plays it forward in time for you. Really a shame it didn't work for me. You might not have the DOWN issue, and if you can handle the visuals, you may love it though.

A case of "Too many chef's spoil the broth".

Retro/Grade is a rhythm game akin to the old Guitar Hero games in the gise of a side scrolling "shooter".

My main issue with the game is that there is a lot going on, there's a lot of mechanics, most are unnecessary and a few are completely unintuitive. The game design is a somewhat unique take on the genre and the graphics are solid for an indie game of it's age, but, too many ideas, too much input has IMHO spoiled the game.

To be fair, it's not a bad or broken game, it's just a bit of a niche game and not for me.

The premise is that the game runs backwards. Your ship moves backwards, Rhythm hit points enter the screen from the right and enemies spawn into existence in front of you after being un-blownup and then fly off screen,like I said the game runs backwards.

As you progress missiles come from enemies and you have to "collect" them, again the game runs backwards, you fired those missiles and you have to "collect" them, which is really counter intuitive as your brain will instinctively make you want to dodge them.

I doubt many will get much playtime from this game but a select few with a penchant for bullet hell and rhythm games will likely get sucked in.

i have found this game very fun, and i don't think "there is a lot going on," which some reviews have said. it just takes some practice, like any other rhythm game. yall would hate geometry dash if this is a lot. i also don't naturally want "to dodge bullets and missiles" as I have heard some others say. im just used to this kinda gameplay, therefore no seeing them as bullets, rather as notes, similar to some other rhythm game (osu, ddr, fnf, guitar hero, etc.). now, i DO wish there was the ability to play it in forwards mode as well to make it a shooter because that would be fun, but i didn't make the game and therefore cannot change anything done during development. and yes, "not many getting much playtime hours" fits this game, less than 15% of the players have completed the easiest campaign somehow, and less than 5% the hardest. the main problem people get with this game is everyone getting lured into thinking this is a shooter, but the surprise in my opinion is actually worth it. the soundtrack is a bop, the difficulty isn't overly annoying (like how it is with some rage games), and the optional challenges are overall interesting. so, in my own conclusion (im not trying to force you to agree with me but simply defending that i don't think the game is bad or "spoiled"), it's a 8.2/10 game. after playing for around 20-30 hours it can become boring but then just becomes a good memory sent to the back of the mind.

Likely to download a d play again sometime in the future and work my through a higher difficulty.

And the music is pretty good as well .

The time rewind theme used goes well with the rythm game mechanics, making it stand out

Been playing this game on and off for many years, and still go back to it on occasion. Originally bought it on PSN, and made a lot of progress there (hence lack of hours played on Steam).

If you're a fan of rhythm games, this one will put you in the zone like almost no other. Excellent, tight gameplay; great music; fun story; explosive visuals; and an interesting concept on top of it all.

I love how much thought was put into the "reverse" aspect of the game, from the way scoring is done, to "fast forwarding" upon death, to the level select screen. Everything plays into the fact that the game is played "backwards". I love the creativity here!

When you really get into the game, and get into the "zone" that I suspect many rhythm game players experience, you'll feel like a god. It also looks spectacular to anyone watching! I've had friends watch me play and be absolutely bewildered that I'm able to do what I'm doing!

This game is a shining example of excellent indie development, so I highly recommend you support it (especially at the cheap prices it usually goes for during Steam sales)!

just straight up the best rhythm game no challenge, the greatest reward from the challenge mode isnt the art the music the skins or the cheats its getting to play the alternative modes to for the win that didnt make it into the game, it shows how unique that lvl is and the extra difficulty will definitelly make you shid yer pant. i wished to see moar like for the win but even tho that lvl has the most unique ♥♥♥♥ of the entire game i still think play him off is the best lvl and song and the melody in that reminded me this game still existed and has stayed in my head for all those years since i played it on the playstation 3 as a demo and eventually got the name of the game cuz i remembered there was a refrence to it in octodad so i watched a vid explaining all the eastereggs so i could find the name and when i did i instantly bought it and completed all the lvls on pro difficulty, on the playstation i never got further then play him off which is why i remembered it so vividly. this will always be the best rhythm game period.

Well, as much as i had fun with it, sadly i cannot recommend it, for the sole reason that's its lagging as hell. There is way too much 3D effect, and i firmly believe that lag is the most unpardonnable thing in a rhyhtm game.

Maybe i will try again by trying to tweak option , but that should not be necessary.

Well, i also believe that while the tracks are awesome, there a too few for my taste.

A really good and underrated rhythm game. While it's a bit of an older title and the graphics are looking a bit dated it's still perfectly playable. The concept itself of moving backwards through a shoot-em-up in time to the music is really unique and very well done. Highly recommended if you like these sorts of games, the soundtrack is great too.

Unique rhythm game with a retro-futuristic space theme.

A fun little game, but can get pretty chaotic when there is a ton on the screen.

The most important part of any rhythm game is being able to clearly read the line of events coming up. Sadly, at the higher difficulty levels this is quite challenging in retro/grade, and not necessarily because the tracks are challenging, but just because of the particle effects, bloom, and background stuff happening in the game.

10 tracks are good, but could use more content.

Honestly, I respect this game and what they were going for. It's worth $10, but I wouldn't have paid full price for this at launch.

Tengo que recomendar esto porque esperaba un shooter (obvio no me vi la pagina del juego) y resulta un juego de ritmo con tematicas de naves, muy satisfactorio.
Recomendado, mas que nada por la escuza que tiene para ser un juego de ritmo, todo transcurre en reversa y tienes que realizar todas tus acciones cuando corresponde, para evitar una paradoja, y me parecio una buena idea.

This game can hurt your eyes, your hands and your brain all at the same time, and I love it.

It's a very underappreciated little title which doesn't offer up a huge amount of content but is still pretty unique and does what it does very well. The gameplay is much like guitar hero whilst simultaneously playing a sort of anti guitar hero, you want to hit the notes coming from the right whilst avoiding hazards coming from the left. A simple yet creative concept which seems daunting at first but doesn't take very long to get to grips with if you've had experience with other rhythm based games.

Despite it looking quite busy at times the gameplay mechanics stand out nicely against the background, thanks to the bright colours, making it clear what the player needs to be doing virtually all of the time. The music can be quite catchy and each level has it's own unique feel whilst maintaining a coherent style across the entire game, none of it feels out of place at all.

Unfortunately on the highest difficulty settings the basic gameplay mechanics do become a little undermined since the notes coming from the right become so frequent that they actually guide you around the majority of the hazards coming from the left. After a couple of goes you'll soon realise that you only need to be paying attention to the left side of the screen at certain points during each stage and as the layouts are always the same you won't get caught off guard at all with practise. That said you can invert the layouts or try other difficulty modifiers such as a zoomed in screen, rotating colours or, best of all, turbo mode which makes the game run at 140% speed. These will need to be unlocked through the challenge mode however with the latter being possibly the most difficult of all to get.

All in all it is a great little package and for a game with only 10 levels it has managed to get way more hours out of me than most big budget titles that are actually designed to make players want to play obsessively. If beat games are your thing then you need to give this a go.

I played Retro/Grade a few years back on PS3. It's quite an underrated rhythm game with a killer soundtrack. Wish it had got more buzz to justify ports to newer platforms, but at least it's on PC! I definitely recommend it if you want a rhythm game with a shump-esque twist.

Imagine a SHMUP-like game, but played backwards, and combined with rhythm gameplay mechanics. Sounds crazy, but it works, and this is easily one of most interesting indie games I played lately. The only thing I don't like is this fancy menu. It might look nice, but it's soooo annoying to navigate around :P

Probably one of the most interesting rhythm games of the last decade, i'll start off by saying it has top notch design and mechanics that flow perfectly with the whole theme, which also leads me to what I think is a key factor for any rhythm game: replayability.

It's hard for me to think of something to not like about it, if your a fan of the genre and love trippy neon-like visuals then I would highly recommend it, can't go wrong for the price. I've probably reinstalled like 3 times over the years to come back and try for more aches, and boy do they make you work for it on a fair level too. It has a vary wide array of difficulty tiers that are named appropriately once you had your fill enjoying the reverse story of rick through his space journey you can do other modes to test your mettle like...

[spoiler] A challenge mode that has I think around maybe 60 very tricky variations of the story levels that somehow all still feel unique and rewarding to complete them which in itself has its own gameplay rewards you can choose from to alter your experience [/spoiler]

All in all if I had to put a summery to the whole thing I would say it's everything you could hope for in a indie-level game; one of those "gem" finds if you will.

This game is fun, vibrant take on a Shoot 'em Up with a creative rhythm element. It's real quick to beat, so I recommend it for a great afternoon diversion. Turn the brightness up a bit as it can be hard to see where the lasers actually hit the ship. I wasn't able to test the guitar controller mode, but it looks fun!

I cannot recommend this game, I like it but the controller setup sucks and you can't compensate for it as the d-pad doesn't change lanes, ie when you press d-pad up it doesn't go to the higher lane. Instead you are required to use the button pad to change lane by number, to move to lane 2 you have to press B/circle, for 3 X/square exe.

Неплохая игра, которую лучше всего охарактеризует Guitar Hero, но усложненная. Фактически играешь в shoot 'em up на переметке назад, следовательно нужно уворачиваться от снарядов противника, которые летят из-за спины корабля в дуло врагов и вовремя стрелять в уже убитых врагов для их возрождения.

this is probably one of my top favorite games.

it's a rhythm game with a campaign mode (play 10 songs of a set difficulty) and a challenge mode (gradually increasing difficulty levels with challenges like "can't rewind", "120% speed", or "can't mess up"). the difficulties go from beginner to expert (like 6 or 7 levels overall), has a good beginning difficulty, good level advancement (not too fast), and the later difficulties are a good challenge.

it also has great visuals, great details, good rhythm timing, and really good music; the only negative thing I can think of about it is that there's only like 10 songs, but they're also really good (I don't think I've gotten bored of any of them tbh) and the diferent levels and challenges vary the notes played, so even then it's not a very big downside.

I originally had it on the ps3 a good few years ago and ended up re-buying it for steam as I enjoyed it that much. please try it out if you enjoy rhythm games, it's only like $10

It's pretty awesome. The gameplay is unique, it's a shmup/rhythm game hybrid. The music is pretty excellent, and sounds amazing with great headphones. Graphically it is pretty outstanding as well, it is extremely colorful and has a lot of attention to detail especially in the backgrounds. The campaign can be completed pretty quickly, but there is many hours of content if you want to complete all the challenges and unlock all the player skins etc. Overall I highly recommend this game, it is extremely underrated and is one of the best music games on steam, if not the actual best.

TLDR: Guitar hero dressed as shootemup. Dated 3D. Nauseating time reversal gimmick as core gameplay. Stiff lanes with clunky navigation. Uninteresting audio.

The game starts with the ending scene against the boss. Then everything rewinds and you have to navigate up and down strict lanes and push the button at the right time to activate nodes, while avoiding the ones coming from the other direction.

The idea is that not doing so will create a time paradox, messing up too much can lead you to have to rewind.

There is an idea that on paper looks interesting, but in practice is just a derivative copycat mashup of different things we have seen done better elsewhere in a rather unappealing shell.

Conclusion: Removing local content permanently for declutter. I have better twitch reaction musical games. Crypt of the Necrodancer just to name the first that come to mind. Best give visibility to other better deserving titles in your collection.

요약평 : 슈팅게임의 탈을 쓴 리듬게임. 방식은 나름 참신했으나 기본이 부족

1. 플레이 방식

플레이어의 캐릭터 기준 왼쪽에서 날아오는 것은 방향키 위아래로 움직임이면서 피하고,

오른쪽은 방향키 위아래로 움직이면서 맞추면 되는 게임입니다.

방식이 엄청나게 신선했다고 보긴 힘들지만 뭐 나름 참신했다정도로 표현할 수 있습니다.

다만 캐릭터가 두께가 있어서 왼쪽에서 날아오는 것을 피하자마자 다시 돌아올 경우에도 맞으며(ㅂㄷㅂㄷ?)

피하는 것까지 고려해서 채보를 짰는지는 솔직히 잘 모르겠습니다.

그리고 위아래로만 움직이되 여러줄을 움직여야하는 게임이 대게 그렇듯

한번 잘못 움직이면 사실상 틀렸다고 보아야합니다.

왼쪽 오른쪽 동시에 봐야하는 것이 모바일 게임의 다이나믹스와 비슷하다고도 볼 수는 있겠습니다만,

아무래도 모니터가 더 넓다는 점, 두께도 고려해야한다는 점, 노래랑 맞춰서 한 건지 잘 모르겠다는 점 등

많은 면에서 장점이라기보다는 좀 단점...으로 봐야 합니다.

2. 기타

노래가 아마 10개인 것 같은데 비슷비슷합니다.
(리듬게임에서 노래 전체를 기타란에 한줄로 평가할 줄이야 ;;)

그리고 처음부터 모든 노래를 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 튜토리얼노래부터 순서대로 해금을 하나씩 해야되기 때문에 이것도 좀.....

또한 그래픽이 많이 화려합니다.

사람에 따라, 특히 리듬게임 특성상 눈에 부담이 좀 많이 가는 편이기 때문에 눈이 아플 수도 있겠네요.

3. 평가

개인적인 평가로는 오락실 기준으로

첫게임 500원, 노래가 전부 다 이런식인가 하고 한 판 더 해서 500원, 합이 1000원정도인 게임으로 봅니다.

노래들이 엄청나게 제 취향인 것도 아니고,

신선한 방식 하나로 퉁치기에는 단점이 좀 많다고 생각합니다.

제가 모르는 무언가가 더 있다면 2천원 정도....?

때문에 패키지에 꼽사리로 낀 것이 아니라, 돈 주고 사시거나 패키지의 메인게임으로 고려하신다면,

반드시 노래정도는 들어보고 사시는게 좋을 것 같습니다.
