Agarest: Generations of War Zero is an adventure fantasy rpg.
From the void, the gods of darkness and light created Agarest, a most perfect and divine world. As the generations passed, paradise sadly fell to the ravages of time. War darkened the skies and Agarest soon became a torturous hell as the gods divided and immense armies clashed, desecrating the once beautiful land… After many years with the war in deadlock, Sieghart, a young officer loyal to the armies of light, passes through the scarred mountains on a perilous mission. There, he meets a strange girl and unknowingly changes the fate of the world forever.

Agarest: Generations of War Zero is a dense and methodical tactical role-playing game developed by Idea Factory and published on PC by Ghostlight LTD, serving as a narrative and mechanical prequel to the original Agarest: Generations of War. Built firmly in the tradition of old-school strategy JRPGs, the game doubles down on long-form storytelling, layered combat systems, and relationship-driven progression. Rather than aiming for accessibility or modern streamlining, it embraces complexity and length, positioning itself as a game designed for patient players who enjoy deep systems and legacy-focused narratives.
The story unfolds across two generations, centering on a conflict between divine forces and encroaching darkness that predates the events of the original game. The first protagonist, Sieghart, is drawn into a war shaped by fate, ancient gods, and moral ambiguity. As with the rest of the series, the narrative is deliberately expansive, delivered through lengthy dialogue scenes, world lore, and character interactions that emphasize destiny and sacrifice. A defining feature is the Soul Breed system, where players build romantic relationships with heroines through dialogue choices and affinity mechanics. The chosen partner directly determines the identity, stats, and abilities of the next generation’s protagonist, ensuring that narrative decisions have tangible mechanical consequences rather than serving purely cosmetic purposes.
Combat remains the backbone of the experience and is presented through grid-based tactical battles that prioritize positioning, synergy, and long-term planning. Units operate within extended area formations, allowing characters placed in specific spatial patterns to unleash chained attacks and cooperative skills. This system encourages thoughtful battlefield layout and coordination rather than reliance on individual powerhouses. Battles tend to be lengthy and deliberate, often requiring careful management of resources, turn order, and formation advantages. While the depth of these systems is rewarding for strategy enthusiasts, it can also make combat feel slow or repetitive, especially when grinding becomes necessary to keep pace with escalating enemy difficulty.
Character progression is unusually intricate, blending traditional leveling with multiple overlapping systems. Protagonists can be customized through card-based skill assignments that influence both combat performance and personality traits, while party members grow through equipment upgrades, stat allocation, and affinity systems. Social mechanics such as Feel Links and Free Intentions allow players to deepen relationships during downtime in towns, unlocking new scenes, costumes, and bonuses. These elements reinforce the game’s core theme that bonds between characters shape the fate of the world, but they also contribute to a heavy menu-driven experience that can feel overwhelming to newcomers.
Visually, Agarest: Generations of War Zero reflects its era and platform origins. Battles are represented through sprite-based characters on grid maps, while story segments rely on illustrated portraits and motion art to convey emotion. Though the presentation may appear dated by modern standards, the anime-inspired artwork remains expressive, and character designs are distinctive enough to support the long narrative. The soundtrack complements the tone well, ranging from somber orchestral themes to more energetic battle tracks, and voice acting—particularly in Japanese—adds personality during key story moments, even if not every line is fully voiced.
One of the most defining aspects of the game is its sheer scale. A single playthrough can easily span dozens of hours, and completionists exploring alternate relationship routes, endings, and post-game content may invest far more time. Extra modes and crossover content with other Agarest entries further extend longevity, reinforcing the sense that this is a game meant to be lived with rather than finished quickly. However, this length is also one of its greatest barriers, as pacing issues, repetitive encounters, and required grinding can sap momentum for players not fully committed to its systems.
Ultimately, Agarest: Generations of War Zero is a demanding but distinctive tactical RPG that prioritizes depth, legacy, and consequence over accessibility. Its generational storytelling, relationship mechanics, and layered combat systems offer a uniquely interconnected experience where choices echo across time. While its slow pacing, dated presentation, and mechanical density may deter casual players, those who appreciate classic JRPG design and are willing to invest the time will find a richly structured journey that rewards patience and strategic thinking, standing as a clear representation of Idea Factory’s uncompromising approach to long-form tactical storytelling.
Rating: 7/10
Zero
Zero
The bosses are insanely hard for playing on normal difficulty and the amount of grinding needed to beat some of them is stupid.
its fun
норм
I wanted to like this but everything is so unbearably slow that I can't enjoy any aspect of it.
Excelente juego de estrategia en turnos.
One of the greatest rpg I ever played and beaten! Very fun and creative!
💋
What I wanted was something like Disgaea combat with a Fire Emblem story. What I got was a janky, slow, and hard to navigate pop-up menu simulator with the story of an average hentai.
Every single turn you have to stop to set the movement for each character (so x6), on a sideways grid you can't rotate that makes it difficult to navigate, then stop to confirm that movement, then stop to confirm the direction you're facing, then stop to confirm that you're done movement. Then you go to combat which makes you stop to select an ability to use every time (there is no basic attack), then press an extra button to execute those abilities for some reason, then stop to (even with animations turned off) wait for a little sound effect and death animation for each enemy you defeat to play before you can do anything, and if you want to skip a turn basically you have to scroll through a menu instead of just pressing one button.
Now maybe that all sounds reasonable to you, and maybe there are means of navigating the menus better than I was or maybe you've played for awhile and got used to it but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was this unappealing for me to play and I tried both controller and keyboard + mouse. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze and I'm refunding this one. There are a many other JPRGs that have better gameplay, or visuals, or story, or all three.
TLDR; The gameplay is slow and tedious. I also hear this version is censored which is annoying.
Great Game
Combat in the game was terrible for an apparent "STBRPG", but now the game simply doesn't work, A), and B) the .exe is saying it is a virus... so yeah... avoid
very good game great story just a good time all around
Lacks the generational mechanic of the first game, which was the appeal that made up for the grind.
I will leave the cat here, so that everybody who passes by can pet it and give it a thumbs up and awards

great strategy game for its time. Love the linked fighting skills. This game has been in my backlog for way too long have it on my PS3 too
I don't think I am a SRPG fan...
I love JRPG's this game is great IMO, can seem a little repetitive with the battle system, but the interactions with companions are very good and fun to watch play out. I also love the feature where you get to play as multiple generations in the same line and watch how your characters can change over time.
Isso aqui já me drenou horas demais.
Pros
Cons
super
fun
Not as bad as Agarest 1, but still grindy.
I can not recommend it to average gamers, but if you like Agarest 1, then you might want to check this one also.
Too generic. Battle map is just the same map over and over, eliminating any interest in combat. Menuing is tedious, and writing just isn't interesting, unfortunately.
The shame is the game seems to have great potential, then you play it and it's in bad need of refinement.
Maybe worth it on a deep discount if you don't mind a ton of grinding are are just in it for the VN bits.
.
Typical compile heart garbage. The plot is stretched very thin, the gameplay extremely repetetive and towards the end obnoxiously grindy - gotta sell those DLC boost packs afterall!! Add to that an obscure true end bs that you would never find without using a guide and you're in for a terrible ride.
2nd verse, same as the first!
If you liked the first game, this is more of the same. Ever-so-slightly more polished combat mechanics, the "quests" have been simplified, no days counter, and significantly more lenient requirements for the "true end." Otherwise, pretty much the exact same experience.
Story slightly less pervy-focused, although that aspect is still sprinkled throughout. The comical running gag from the first game also runs here, but less comical this time around.
This series is what got me into tactical turn-based rpgs, i found out about it when i had my 360. I played Zero, the original, and 2 (although i never finished 2). Great games and great stories.
Yes.
Eugene is best boy,
Solid game overall so definitely a recommend.
I had fun with this but it is VERY grindy.
+ Amazing artwork, all Agarest games never disappoint
+ Battle system is fun and a lot of strategy
+ Quest areas are done much better here than in Agarest Generations of War
+ Much more challenging than the first Agarest with the bosses notably tougher
- The grind for titles, materials, EP, Gold is very noticeable
- The pacing is terrible at times because they split sections of the story with sometimes over 20 battles, who thought that was a good idea?
- The smithing guy is still the true last boss of the game. If anything his mess up percentage might have went up since the first game.
This game is incredibly repetitive. The combat system seemed interesting. The first few fights were fun, figuring combos and positional synergies between your character. But then, you spend your next 10 hours doing the exact same strategy because almost every fights is the same against the same opponents. The repetition was so bad that by the 8th hour, i'd shudder when opening a new zone and i'd discover i had 3 fights to do before getting to the next event point. By the 10th hour, i just couldn't get myself to start the game anymore. Some people might like this type of game, but the repetition was too brutal for me.
good old strategic japanese roleplaying game with the bright and expressive art style one can expect from games of this ilk whether that is a blessing or curse in your regard
love <3
Overall 8/10
Extremamente longo.
Ambiente do mundo: 9/10
Requisitos do sistema: 10/10
Great game
I do not like being coddled in games. However, it would be nice if there were pointers about how to get certain items early on that are very necessary towards progressing in the game (or maybe they could give you more opportunities to obtain the things you need?). There were multiple mechanics with vacation days and other things that were not made clear from the beginning, and this caused a lot of frustration. I have restarted the game from scratch twice now to make it so that my characters are better equipped from the beginning, but now I face having to restart a third time because I somehow missed my chance at a vacation day which I didn't know was possible. This game is a huge pain to play and it's ruining the fun.
Great improvement from first game
love it good game play
It's a good game with only one problem. The freebie items they include, IF you activate them, will really ruin the game for you, and there's nothing to indicate whether you should activate them. Your first assumption is probably like mine- that the items will be either cosmetic or balanced in nature, and won't ruin the gameplay at all. They are essentially enough to make the entire game VERY easy aside for some of the late game stuff, though, so beware.
Buy it. Play it. Don't activate the addons unless you're playing a 2nd time. Enjoy.
the story is perfect for a prequel

Keeps crashing on me, can't even play it . feels bad
My Style of Game.
Agarest: Generation of War Zero is a prequel the Agarest: Generation of war game that came out back in the 2007. If you played the other agarest series you know what you’re going into but if you haven’t well lets just say it’s gonna be pretty interesting. Now onto the breakdows:
The Pros
(+) Tons of skills combination to choose from
This is self-explanatory I think. As you progress the story and complete side quest you will unlock more skills to improve you’re party. Always check the estorica book for combination list. Don’t just throw random skills in each character. If you do that you won’t survive the end game.
(+) Character modification
I don’t know a better term for this, but basically as you level up your characters you’ll get extra points for you allocate between stats. With this you would be able to create any kind of character that suits you. And you also get these extra points by winning combats so yeah the possibilities are endless. But ofcourse each character has its own specialization so if you want to change it, its possible but might take a while.
(+) Challenging end game dungeon
Just like the other agarest game after you finish the true end, you will have access to an extra dungeon "the boundary plane" in this dungeon the difficulty is cranked up even more, which make the game more challenging but also tedious at the same time. There's also a lil bit of story in there.
(+) This is basically 2 game in 1
Yes i'm being serious, if you port the complete save file from Agarest: Generation of War, you get the "option" to replay the whole Agarest: Generation of War gameplay without the mob fights, and that's a huge plus for me. The other perk is this time you're locked to true end however you won't be able to make a decision for you're spouse as it's also locked for each generation. So even if you haven't play Agarest: Generation of war (like me), do your self a favor and look up for a clear save. trust me....you'll need it.
The Cons
The cons for this game is that the combat is really tedious at times and take a long to finish. Oh and I need to mention that if you mess up an event you’re locked out from true end. So yes you need to do it all over again. I mention to get the Agarest: generation fo war clear save file no? do youself a favor and just do it. Unless you want to be locked out the extra story and extra dungeon in the post game…..
Verdict
To be honest im kinda on the fence whether to give a thumbs up or down. I really enjoy playing the game, the only thing I have problem with is how the game didn’t tell me that the extra content could be access using agarest generation of war clear file…. Other than that particular part I like this game…..so yeah. on a side note if i don't mention a certain aspect of the game it means for me it doesn't really stand out or just fine.
Pro tip :
1. Get a clear save file from agarest: generation of war
2. Read the true end guide…..saves you the trouble……
Boring and unnecessarily convoluted. Looked nice in the store not very interesting to play.
its adorable
The fun part of the first Agarest was the whole 5 generations mechanic, in wich at the end of each one you chose a bride to give birth to the protagonist of the next generation. Agarest Zero only has 2 generations meaning only one choice. The characters in this one felt really boring and bland when compared to the ones in the first game too.
This one has a digested version of the first game wich doesn't allow you any meaningful choices and feels more like padding for a game that's already lacking a lot of content.
A personal issue with the games is an event at the end of the game that allows you to catch special monsters (really hard to do) but they don't transfer to your new game plus like monsters did in the original Agarest!
10/10
The story is okay, but the battles are really really boring. Took me a long time to finish this game as I could only stand it in short bursts.
i like the tactical games and the Agarest Serial is the answer, since you can get the complete game with special discount
This is basically the first game, but with trashy characters, story and visual design.
Also, true ending now depends on your relationships with characters, which means zero freedom and one hundred percent boredom.
If you never played Agarest for its combat, then this game got absolutely nothing to offer you.
Good strategy JRPG, but too many tutorials at the start. D: It just dumps a lot of text and mechanics on you all at once.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1873061629
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1873061568
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1873061597

So I saw this on sale when Agarest War Mariage was released and thought, why not give this a run through?
Right, well the main thing I was interested in: The grind for 100% status. Saw this was a grind heavy game, thought nah, probably isn't. Well, let's just say it temporarily scratched that grind itch I've had.
The story didn't grab my attention, characters had their moments, however, I did get a chuckle in the post game content (4th wall breaks).
In all, would I recommend this game? Yeah, I would.

TLDR: Redundant with the Neptunia series. Tactics game witih visual novel elements. Audiovisually disappointing. Drawn out campaign. For weebs only.
Have Fun
good game back in the day
very nice, could use some more big tiddies tho
Good storyline, and unique character system
It really has been some time since I actually played this game back in 2016. But I plan to start it up again. This is quite the fun game with being able to tame monsters, chain skills for massive combos, and really make unique teams based on personal preference.
Anyone who enjoys either Anime or TBS games, should take a moment to dive into this one.
only wounder if they will ever come back to add English Dubbed options. While having played through with ES, i'd like to see what it would be like to have it in ED.
The only decent Agarest title to pick up. The rest you can feel the lack of effort and the cut outs on the games content. Its sad really to see it become very noticeably worse after each new release.
Can't say that this is a bad game, however I'm marking it as not recommended since there are some aspects I did not enjoy about it but might appeal to others:
* Combat is interesting at first but becomes tedious since it's very repetitive.
* Game feels over all very slow, specially transitions.
* I did not understand why the choices made some characters like/dislike me, those seemed pretty random.
* Way too much dialogue. You probably wouldn't mind this if you're into JRPGs/VNs but it was too much for me.
i like the story (atleast so far since i dropped the game) and some of the graphics. And I like tactical grid battles in general, but they made a faceplant in the combat system of this game, the battles are stale and repetitive, they are ridiculously slow and it takes way to much time to do anything and everything. this is due to poor optimization in the ui and the pacing of the combat.
I might have been able to ignore it and enjoy the rest of the game if there were less combat or more variety in the battles in-between the story sections, having 4 fights in a row that are 95% identical with this combat system just wore me out in a after a few hours of play.
This a thinly veiled dating sim, with some turn-based RPG element's.
If you're into that, then it may very be a great game for you. IF are a great developer and deserve your money. And on that basis I am recommending this game.
If you're not into that, the clunky, tedious battle systems and very light story will leave you bored and frustrated.
The information overload at the start of the game serves poorly as an introduction to the combat system. But that doesn't matter, as you receive a whole load (enough to kit out everyone) of very high level items that make everyone insanely OP and near-unkillable. Which means you are never encouraged to learn, not that it matters.
Music is fine, nothing of note.
Graphics are pretty poor considering similar styled games (Think, trails in the sky by Falcom) are older and still look as good, or better in places.
Świetna gra ciekawy sytem rozwoju, mój klimat.
Pros
+ Variety of skill combinations
+ One can get some nice bonus if you have a save state of Agarest: Generations of War
+ Dating-Sim
+ Skip-Dialogue-Function
Contra
- The battle system feels tedious and gets boring quickly. You will be in battle 90% of the time.
- Ended up using only a small set of skill combinations.
- Dialogues/Story somewhat bland
- Grindy achievements.
- Overall grind (means more battles...)
- Later everything can 1-shot you, escpecially bosses.
I wish there is a neutral review button for games like this...
I will compare this game, to it's predecessor (generations of war):
Pros:

Better character animations

Bit more varied and better looking battlefields

More dungeons

Better pacing

Some enemies are redesigned and look better

Better looking skill animations

In extra mode, you can replay the story of previous game
Cons:

Less characters

A lot of returning characters are locked behind dlc/paywall

Shorter story

Less continents to explore

Same problems as the previous title
Overall, this game seems better than the first, but if it weren't for extra mode, it would be worse, due to less content.
With added extra mode, it might seem better. I mean, it still has the same problems the previous game had. I just wish that, a lot of characters wouldn't be locked behind a paywall.
This is, easily, the worst game I've ever tried. I beat Agarest: Generations of War, and while that was a trial because the combat system is really, really bad, obnoxious and boring, I loved everything else about that game; I loved the theme, I loved the writing, the characters, the overall tone of the game and the music.
I cannot say the same for this game at all. First of all, the Live2D in this game is awful and is really awkward. It just doesn't work and ruins each and every portrait in this game. Combat is exactly the same, so can't say that much about the gameplay. It's boring, it's tedious, it feels like a waste of time no matter how calculated your moves are or how creative you are.
The worst thing of all must be the characters. Dialogue is really bland and awkward, nobody is really serious, and the plot just isn't interesting at all because I don't give a damn about any character. Mimel is super annoying, and feels a step back in every way. Music by the way, are mostly remixes of themes from Agarest 1, but with less quality instruments for some reason. It's bad. It isn't worth your time. I stopped playing, started watching a video on youtube with all the cutscenes and even that I had to stop, because I wasted 30 minutes of my life watching cutscenes with bad dialogue, no real weight and Eugene is annoying and a poor man's version of Winfield from the first game.
Just skip this game, and read the wiki about Vashtor if you come from playing Agarest 1 and want to know the only interesting part about this game.
PS: About the translation, it's pretty free. They shouldn't try to make pretty something that is clearly super vanilla, it's pretty weird when you read something like "Is something wrong, my fair lady?" but the protagonist just screams "HUUUH???" in the most cliched anime voice.
Agarest Zero (or Agarest: Generations of War Zero) is a prequel to Agarest: Generations of War. As such it makes it difficult to tell when one is supposed to play it. By that, I mean, there is an option to load your Generations of War complete save to add more info for your Zero play experience. The Agarest series is produced by Idea Factory and is one of their more popular and famous products (not the most popular or famous… that’s Neptunia).
It is a JRPG with a slight twist of you progressing through generations. Usually you will have three or more choices a generation for your bride. So expect a few romance/visual novel elements to show up.
Worth the play, though maybe get on discount. Especially if you are buying all the DLCs…
i really gave the game a try, turned of the dlc´s and the enemies was weak until the first dungeon when they started to hit a bit more, i started dying for being to greedy like i should have done in the first place but then comes the boss. obv he is higher lvl than me, i was sitting at lvl 6/5 with my party and the big wolf was lvl 10, i knew it was going to be hard but i never expected the boss to 1SHOT MY ENTIRE PARTY, honestly how am i suppose to beat something if the towns dont have any upgrades for me? sells the same stuff all the time. if you play with dlc you steamroll the entire game pretty much making it pointless to play and without them you cant play? thats good game design. dont waste your time on this
This game is slow and repetitive, like painfully slow. Even the story is slow and annoying and normaly, stories are my favorite thing in games.
The story seems fine in itself and de caracters make me want to know more, but, the paste of the game kills it for me, I won't spend the hundreds hours it would take to get trought.
The game was great.Dialogues was a bit boring. You can item upgrade and u can play with so many characters.Options for the true end of the game is not in your hands.İf it could have been better if it were in your hands the true end
