actual hot garbage. tried to like it but i bought a sniper laser for it to miss all the shots. and yes the game cuz all you get to do is charge up the side and press a button. Could look over the fact it's just menu if the space part was any good. approaching or leaving space stations slows to an awful crawl for no reason. You make it a point to not hit the environment so why is that different? Again combat is just wack. No way to aim. Maneuverability is literally left and right. No up no down no roll dodge so no way of actually evading enemies. I should've stopped but I wanted to like it and now I'm down a dollar. I should've bought an arizona tea and it would have been better spent. I can't imagine buying this game at full price. Refunding the other one cuz this was abysmal.

The game is pretty dang fun if you're looking for an uncomplicated space battle sim & you're ok with 2d naval type combat. However it's really more about style & atmosphere than substance.

On the plus side: the combat is simple & fun, atmosphere & music are pretty great & the game maps are very, very pretty. Turn up the volume & shoot some baddies while carrying cargo from station to station (or system to system) & you'll feel like a space trucker / space cowboy.

On the downside: combat, factions, number of available ships, ship customization, npc interaction & the overall complexity of everything you're interacting with is... well, thin. Story & quests are very forgettable. This feels more like the backbone of a game rather than a full experience. What's there is functional but simple. Once i got the ship i wanted & upgraded it there really isn't anything to do.

Short & sweet experience, I appreciate the game for what it is & while it doesn't hold me engaged for long, it's good enough that i wish it did.

Maravilloso para quitarte el mono de las navecitas, que los fans de la ciencia ficción tenemos opciones pero sinceramente no tantas.

La dinámica es simple, tienes tu nave, llevas a cabo misiones y ganas dinero, mejoras tu nave, haces misiones más difíciles que dan más dinero, mejoras más tu nave, y así hasta la saciedad. La formula es simple pero funciona, básicamente porque las mejoras se notan mucho. Ya sea aumentar la velocidad, reforzar los escudos o añadir armamento, o mejor aún cambiar de nave a una mejor, se nota en seguida y hace que ir avanzando sea muy satisfactorio.

Lo único malo que le podría sacar al juego es que sea repetitivo, pero en lo personal no me molesta por todo lo dicho arriba. No hace muchas cosas, pero lo que hace lo hace muy bien. Y algunas naves están sinceramente muy guapas.

It has been years since i played this, i remember i liked the concept very much, the broadside battles in space were fun.
What i didn't like was that whole game was scaling upwards, so you always fought an uphill battle to progress, but when you returned to some older locations for whatever reason, the lowly rusty space pirates you fought at level one on equal footing now has same insane battlecruisers as you do...
That and bit of a repetitivnes towards the end.

What i absolutely loved about the game though is the soundtrack, i sometimes listen to OST to this day.
No idea why i decided to write the review now, but here it is :)

For 17 euros, this game is a good buy.
Honest 40hr playtime to finish the game, while not rushing it at all and its only 2.2GB to download.

What I liked :

- Beautiful space environment, I mean just gorgeous to be in and fly around. I was surprised to notice that the lens flares were not in my face and were quite realistic. Whoever was doing lighting knew what they were doing.
- Naval Style engagement was definitely the right choice.
Even though the game itself is 2D in the movement of all ships bigger than a fightercraft, it totally made sense considering that capital ships are just too slow and bulky to be making any kind of excessive 3rd axis manoeuvre.
The overall gameplay loop when it comes to combat DOES NOT get boring, which I found to be surprising considering its not complicated at all.
- Gun sounds are impactful and thoroughly enjoyable
- Visual effects, from explosions or moving at Warp speed are just great and satisfying.
- Every system has multiple space stations each with its own economy, enabling trade, provided you keep up to date of the event happening within said system (although this could have been fleshed out more because it stops being efficient mid-late game when quests start giving 1M+ credits).
- Music, although you have put a few more tracks in.

What I didnt like :

- The Story could have been more fleshed out, should have been longer and more impactful.
it amounts to basically running around looking for fragments of memory only to end abruptly and to absolutely no reward for the player.
It feels more like a chain sidequest then the main storyline.
- Main villains appear near the end game but are never fleshed out AT ALL, only passingly explained as a threat to everyone and then "killed off".
- There should have been more options to interact with factions other than doing quest + or - reputation.
Militia will never need your help even if offered and will also NEVER agree to assist you when asked to. I dont understand why is the dialog even there to begin with, considering...
I dont understand why you cant actually trade with the merchants you meet in space other then buy and sell 1 random(or not so random if you think about it) item from their/your inventories respectively.
Other than it being a clear lack of options it also poses an opportunity to be exploited to get stupid amounts of credits early game.
- Inability to recruit mercenaries OTHER than fighter craft. why? because in the mid-late game they become useless and get targeted and killed against even moderate amount of enemies, let alone swarms.
- inability to recruit other factions to your cause like pirates, syndicates, militia or civilians along side the regular fighter craft sidekicks that you meet in bars.

Overall, 8.7/10

The biggest chunk of the missing score I attribute to lackluster story.

Loved this game since the first time I played it years ago but never got to finish it due to lack of cloud saves. Randomly searched Steam for it yesterday thinking "Can't be disappointed if it's still not on here, why not check anyway?" And there it was. And now I have cloud saves and I will never lose progress again due to PC problems. Sweet. Can't wait to get back into the cockpit. <3

期待してプレイしたが、正直かなり厳しい出来。

宇宙トレーダー＋戦闘ゲーという触れ込みだが、やることはほぼ
「ミッション受注 → ワープ → 敵を倒す → 報酬」の繰り返し。
最初は新鮮でも、数時間で完全に作業に。

戦闘も思っていたようなドッグファイトではなく、実質“横向き砲撃ゲー”。
船の旋回も遅く、位置取りの自由度も低いので、戦術というより火力ゴリ押し。
爽快感はまったくない。

良い点を挙げるならBGMと雰囲気は悪くない。
でも、ゲームプレイが単調すぎて１度クリアして終わり。

個人的には「宇宙ゲーに当たりなし」と思ってるから、
セールやバンドル以外で買うのはおすすめしない。

I'm back playing this old gem because I never finished the campaign the first time around, and decided to start over and see the sights again. It's so good to be back! This is not Freelancer, but feels a bit like it. This is not Windward, but feels a bit like it. Maybe a hybrid of the two.

This is a 2D flight game, meaning it's more like a ship game (ie, Windward) in terms of movement during combat. Like Freelancer, there's a dynamic trading market. Like both games, there are missions aplenty. You can buy all sorts of new ships, new weapons, new components, and the way the game's progression goes, you have to build stronger to take on harder enemies in your own sector, and the even harder enemies in further sectors.

Each sector is pretty large, having 20+ stations and lots of various special areas (only a few varieties of these, but what you find there does vary). In sectors, warp is just faster travel to get around--to get to other sectors, find the jump gate(s) in your sector and jump there if you installed that jump drive in the first system.

It has a rocking soundtrack of blues rock, but also supports custom music in case you get bored with the small set of songs in the game.

Overall, it's a great romp, will kick your butt if you try to jump ahead without upgrading your ship, and the story is....well trod. Nothing new, but it gets you from sector to sector.

Graphics are good for the age is came out, but nothing pretty by today's standards. So, any modern potato should run it.

This game is truly something, Something remarkable and amazing!
I went into this game not knowing anything or anywhat is going on therefore my blind playthrough I learnt a lot of mistakes that would of course be known that I need to take advantage of the mechanics and everything in the game to allow me to improve.

[h3] Story [/h3]

The story in this game is basic and pretty much understanding of what's going on f rom start to finish however the story blends really well in this game universe.
one thing that might be of putting it that there's no self adjusting to what difficulty to play on but without spoilering this game (despite being a 10 year old game) It works well why this game doesn't have a difficulty setting. the game isn't hard when you start getting the hang of things and having the rough understanding on everything.

this game looks really good especially back 10 years ago!
the way the ships look and space is really incredible especially as a space person I really like the way this game visually looks!

The Sound design is also good! the way the ships sounds and asteroids.

Gameplay will get some getting use to if your not use to this type of gameplay however it's pretty straight forward which is what I like.
It also fits the feel for this game and of course being in space.
There's no first person to switch to but honestly this game is unique and great without needing it. Could future games maybe pull of first person with this franchise yes.
Would it necessarily need it for this franchise to be good no this game is able to be great without needing everything all in once.

This game runs smooth! Again this is a 10 year old game so this game really does run well. I had everything max and no issues, very and I mean very little bugs at least for me which is great! especially with how old games would usually occur having bugs. But this game is smooth to run!

[h3] Factions [/h3]

The factions on this have enough to keep you up on your feet with fighting could it of needed maybe more factions maybe but as far as I'm aware this is the first rebel galaxy game so honestly the amount of factions in this game is enough for you to have plenty enough to do in this game.
Also you can also decide who you want to be neutral or friendly or even go far on being enemies with.

[h3] Ships [/h3]

Plenty enough Ships to keep the replay ability going! and have fun with all the ships! Really great to use and easy to understand what the ships pros and cons are.

[h3] Achievements [/h3]

The achievements for the most part is not that part pretty easy to get some grindable ones.
But one of the ones that I found out the hard way with is the kill 20 pirates lords
Once you got a ship good enough to destroy them.
To get this I'd simply save and quit
launch back in destroy the ship and quit the game without saving - ALT F4 and rinse repeat
otherwise I'd give the achievements a 9/10

[h3] Overall [/h3]

This Game is one of my favourite third person open world space exploration and sci fi games I've played!
I should also mention the interactions with characters in this is great! I loved the intro to as well in this game! I'd easily give this game around a 10/10 of course most games for people will be a 9/10 as all games have there own issues but I truly believe this game deserves a 10/10 from me.

Had a lot of fun with this - reminded me a lot of sailing around, fighting everything that moves, and upgrading my ship in AC4. Each system gets harder, the equipment available goes up a tier or two, and the quest rewards are better. I like being able to actually replace the ship itself, with different hulls having different weapon arrangements, and that paired with the variety of main weapons lets you find your preferred combat style. The story is nothing special, but does it's job to get you moving around and getting into fights. Just don't do the escort missions, they take forever!

Great game, i picked it up for around $2 on sale. Fun atmosphere, especially coupled with Synthwave music from your own playlist playing in the background while you're warping and blowing up alot of ♥♥♥♥$ng ships in full on Star Wars style battles.

The only negative thing i can say about this, is thats its becoming like another Mount Blade: Bannerlord to me. Completely overwhelmed with addiction. Since i bought in late Dec it i have played nothing but RG. Enough of my ramblings, i'm alt tabbing back into the game.

You’ll be trading, hunting pirates, hauling cargo, and blasting enemy ships with satisfying broadside combat that feels more like space naval warfare than a twitchy dogfight sim.

Progression is smooth and rewarding. As you buy bigger ships and upgrade your gear, it’s deeply satisfying to return and flatten enemies you once had to flee from. But it’s not just about size—sticking with a favorite ship and upgrading it can keep it viable far longer than you'd expect.

The galaxy is procedurally generated, packed with missions from various factions, trade routes to exploit, and hostile sectors to survive. You can play it straight or lean into piracy—it’s up to you. There's no planetary landing or deep narrative, but the vibes and moment-to-moment gameplay make up for that.

It’s simple, stylish, and still fun today. If you're a fan of space sims, especially ones that let you chart your own outlaw path, Rebel Galaxy is a must-play—especially on sale.

I was a big Freelancer fan, but Rebel Galaxy didn't seem to work for me - I didn't hate it, but I never loved playing it. I gave it (I think) three sessions to win me over and show me that it would get better, but it was just more of the same. I've been trying to think about why it didn't click.

The horizontal-plane broadside-based combat wasn't my preference but I guess I didn't hate it, and there was enough to do that it was generally engaging enough once you had slightly-better-than-starter gear. Some of the game's controls are a bit clunky / annoying but I got used to it enough that it didn't actively bother me much anymore.

I think the biggest problem was just that I never felt immersed in the game world, which made the gameplay itself feel moreso mechanical and repetitive/grindy rather than rewarding. The characters and story that I experienced also felt flat and lifeless to me, like they existed just to provide an artificial backdrop to the gameplay, but nothing more than that.

It all felt a bit too arcade-y at times, and not in a good way - as if playing Freelancer with all the campaign story content (missions, characters, cinematics) removed. But hey, plenty of other Freelancer players have enjoyed it so maybe I'm in the minority.

Game is fun rough when you first start. the controls are bit janky and weird but just takes time to get used to if anyone has played 'Pirates of the Caribbean Online(mmorpg that shutdown)' the ship runs work similar to it, saves when you dock, and you only lose what you gained that run if your ship gets destroyed. also your ship dont work on a 3D plane but rather a invisible 2D flat surface

Overall its a very good game id recommend it

It's dated, feels like playing a retro space pirate sim, but the sound track alone keeps everything light and exciting. Reminds me of watching Firefly. You get your ship and cruise the galaxy, meeting aliens, mining asteroids, and being attacked by pirates. Choices influence your reputation, which is really cool, save other traders from the pirates, or become a space pirate yourself. You can upgrade your ship, weapons, and armor, you can make friends or enemies, its a well thought out game with lots to love, even after 10 years... Yeah there are some minor things that should have been ironed out prior to release, but nothing that prevents you from having a good time.

I was looking for something that would scratch the the itch for flying around in space and this certainly does it. The combat is unique, acting like old naval battles with broadside weapons, the ship design has the cool factor, and the gameplay is engaging and allows for stop and go playing. (sometimes I only have 15 minutes, and that is plenty of time to hop on, do some missions, and get off). Not a super intense or deeply story driven, but entertaining and enjoyable.

Great game, beautiful space!!
Finished main campaign.

This game is like Freelancer, but 2D, imagine like pirate ship in open sea.
The story is like Galaxy On Fire 2 Valkyrie DLC, Virax in this game is equivalent to Void, Trell is equivalent to Khador.
Jump Gate system is like in Fishlabs Deep 3D.

Early game is kinda hard, mid to late game is easy as long as you have ship with many turrets, Death Star everything with Particle Laser easy win!!

Broadside cannon is only useful in early game & when you fight ship with strong shield.

10/10 awesome

This is probably my favorite chill space game that can still get big crazy battles. Rebel Galaxy takes a lot of features you would see in the big space sim games but makes it simpler and streamlined. A commodity market that is different from station to station and system. Do you want to be a miner you can do that. Space Pirate check. Do you want to grind out becoming the big and bad ship in the galaxy you can do that as well.

I like that the battles are essentially Master and Commander in space. Taking down the shields and armor of a giant capital ship to swoop up on its side and unload your broadsides into her and take the loot that they keep in their hold.

I played this game on Xbox back in the day when it first released and saw it was on sale for $2 and couldn't pass up the the chance to replay this great game again and already I am hooked back in grinding away to having the big badass ships I remember.

9.2/10 The blues soundtrack also is the cherry on top.

It's an alright space game. It has its flaws but it's overall a fun experience. Absolutely worth it on sale.

I feel like I should offer a little more here. I finished the main story and did some side stuff and I'm done. It's somewhat disappointing that you can finish the main story and experience everything the game has to offer in a very short time (8-12 hrs) if you focus on getting a decent ship and high tier weapons. You only need something like the Tennhausen (3rd ship available) to finish the final story mission. It's a good experience but it is definitely limited and finishing the story leaves only self-motivation to experience anything else the game has to offer with only some minor targets for grinding to completion. Once you have the ship you want equipped how you'd like, that's it. There's no further incentive for play and if you equipped your ship well the challenges the game offers are trivial.

Having said all that, the experience and gameplay the game offers are totally worth 5$ or less, imo, maybe even 10$. The space sim/hauler genre is underdeveloped and this entry at least offers something in the space, but due to the lack of Z axis travel and use of broadsides it's kinda like a colonial era naval battle thing, but it's space. Overall recommend, but not at full price since the scope and time of the experience even though it's nicely done leaves a bit to be desired. If the story was longer and there was more incentive to play in the sandbox with more to do, I'd drop the buy on sale caveat.

Space mercenary action.

The main story is plenty of fun, the side stories add significant flavor to the universe, and for completionists it's possible to 100% the game in a single playthrough.

The combat is executed through a mix of turrets, "broadside" guns, and other support weapons. Your turrets work like you'd expect. The broadside guns fire in limited arcs to either side of your ship, and come in a few different varieties including homing weapons. Most of the ships you encounter in the game are playable by you, though you may need to make nice with a certain faction to pick some of them up. The gameplay is kind of flat, despite being rendered in three dimensions, but you still have enough room to maneuver to dodge most enemy fire in the faster ships. Bigger ships don't dodge so great, but they make up for it with far stronger shields and a *lot* more firepower.

Rebel Galaxy is one of my favorite sci-fi games. The mix of space battles, trading, exploration, and that gritty, blues-rock soundtrack creates an unforgettable atmosphere. Flying through asteroid fields, negotiating with shady factions, and upgrading your ship feels incredibly satisfying. It’s Firefly meets rock ‘n’ roll — and I loved every minute of it.

Good times to be had flying about, exploring, fighting pirates, mining, trading and just looking at the beautiful space the devs built for this.

Still runs well, and some of the mod community is still around after all this time.

fed up with complex flight sims where I'm just a glorified space drone
RG gives you command of capital ships that feel heavy and powerful.
The sense of scale when you warp into a system and see a massive freighter convoy or a Destroyer is genuinely good.
visuals are colorful and vibrant. Nebulae, asteroid fields, debris, space doesn't look like boring black nothing.
My favorite feature: THE CUSTOM RADIO. I dumped my entire folder of 80s synthwave and power metal in there.
Cruising through a pirate sector with my own music blasting? Unfathomably based.
The core loop is simple, which is why it works: Get credits -> Buy bigger cannons and a stronger hull -> Vaporize bigger things. Pure dopamine upgrade path.
10/10 for delivering a solid, fun, space pirate power fantasy. Minimal cringe, maximum broadsides.
For it's price on sale is absolutely worth it.

I wouldn't call it a space sim, when I say it I'll think of Elite Dangerous, Eve Online and the such. But this isn't it, a game that is more geared towards building you ship in a big scary galaxy, way bigger that you'll ever be, where fighting is a very small part of the whole action and with a lot of oportunities in every direction. No, this is more of an arcade space game more akin to the ship combat of Assassin's Creed 3 and 4. It is more loud, more instantaneous than the other games. I personally are not a fan of the fake moons and planets that are more illusions of their true size, but It is somewhat necesary as this is not as big of a game.

game's pretty good. combat is a little tricky to get used to, and becomes very samey after a while. Going from place to place is annoying when you exit warp every 10 seconds because you got too close to an asteroid field or ran into an enemy patrol, and certain mission types that involve protecting an AI are infuriating beyond belief.

other than that, its got some cool music and a story that doesn't make me want to ignore it. core mechanics remind me of Galaxy on Fire 2 which is a game i very much enjoy, so i recommend if you like flying a spaceship and shooting things.

Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a game. Impossible to leave without Ctrl+Alt+Del (WTF?). Gamepad only. And just thrown in with practically no instructions. Amateurish at best. Oh and there is no up and down (you're stuck on one axis, whilst the opposition can fly normally (again wtf!)).

Freelancer v0.2 (seriously if it can't manage to be better than a now ancient game...). Quite simply, forget what people claim, it isn't anything like Freelancer (that was good).

I used to play this on a friends computer a long time ago and then bought it for myself some years back and still play it from time to time as it beats pretty much any other space-roam sim (IMO) while also scratching the Nostalgia itch. The sequel is not nearly as good and they do not capture the same feel.
