I love roguelikes, even if this isn't a pure fit. I think that this game is somewhere in between a roguelike and puzzle games. There is a choice between a race, a class, a pantheon and a prestige class. And items brings this even further. I'm obsessed. The graphics are impressive and the music is fitting!

THIS IS THE BUILD SIMULATOR 3000 and worth every single buck * 10!
It doesn't take long to unlock everything, but if you do you can freely choose from one out of 24 CULTURES, that you can be freely combinened with one out of 24 CLASSES, that subsequentely can be freely combined with one of 24 RELIGIONS, each one with different skill sets and triggers. That's 13824 possible combinations just to START A RUN! Then you can combine this with seven out of 90 skills out of 10 skilltrees (skills from three trees are allowed per run) and THEN push forward to one of the 78 prestige classes, not to mention the 168 weapons and armory that you can find throughout your run (I hope I didn't miscount).
Don't be deterred by the graphics (like I was at first), they do their job pretty good and leave room for imagination - it's the mechanics that stand out! I've read PoA has been created by a single developer in his freetime besides his fulltime job, and it's absurdly unbelievable how much depth and creativity he put into (t)his dark fantasy roguelike and how incredibly well thought-through this is. I didn't notice that I've racked up 8h per day for 14 days straight... the last time I've had that was when Minecraft appeared.
To me it's the single most underappreciated game here on Steam. Almost nothing beats the feeling when you clear an endgame room just by entering it. Thank you dev, for letting me have so much fun with this game, you've totally nailed it :D
Game's not really for me, I guess. The gameplay itself involves very little strategy and you'll spend most of the game holding the auto-move button watching sprites disappear from the screen until you win or die. The build crafting part of the game seems interesting enough, but the payoff just doesn't really do it for me.
My first run, I lucked into a strong build by kinda throwing stuff at the wall until it sticked. I auto-moved through the entire game without a single issue. No thinking required, no strategy. Now, the game does get harder each time you win, which would require you to create stronger builds, but after failing my next two runs I realized I did not care for actually winning again. Even if I were to take the time to think and make a better build, my reward would just be to hold right click through the entire game again.
I understand the appeal, the game is very reasonably priced, and the dev does seem to care. I just can't enjoy it. If you really like buildcrafting and auto-battling, I think you'll like it, but if you enjoy the moment to moment strategy in roguelikes, I do not think you'll enjoy this one much.
Jeu d'optimisation.
I beat it on my 3rd run with Snakeform on Cyclops, Mubarizun, and Humbaba. Those words sound suitably fantasy enough for you? Path of Achra is stimulating. Whisper strings on nerves. Keeping me to the monitor.
It's this dodge build that attacks when I step and dodge. I deal more damage based on how much HP I have. But I never lose HP. ....Then I just level up HP. And let's do more attacks per attack while I'm at it. There's even more synergy in the 50+ equipment options but that's the base of it.
What would you do with a 1 damage guaranteed hit? Would you inflict poison? Build speed to spam? Transform the enemy?

余計な要素は一切無く、ただただ戦闘を繰り返し、自分のビルドがどこまで通用するのかを楽しむゲーム。
自分は未だにCycle(他のゲームで言う所のAscension)10で苦戦中ですが、32まであるとの事でボリュームは計り知れない。
1ラン30分前後(Summoner系はもう少し長くなる)で、気軽に楽しめるのはとても良い点だと思う。
結論、とても楽しい上に安く、テキストも簡単なので、伝統的ローグライクに興味はあるが抵抗のある方ほどオススメ出来ます。

This is a really cool turn-based roguelike.
Character creation is a lot of fun. Pick your Culture, Class and Religion to create a unique character with tons of potential combinations. As you play you will unlock more and more of these. In addition to that, there are also prestige classes and a huge variety of weapons, armor and skills.
The only thing that I feel may be a downside to some is there is no keyboard support. This is all mouse clicks.
I won't really go into more detail as I think the game is great, it's cheap, and if you somehow find yourself here then chances are this is your kind of game. It's also relaxing.
tbh i never thought i'd actually like a game like this, it's pretty fun despite being a build making autism simulator. Plus it feels very conan-esque
If you have that little itch in your brain for theory crafting (and then promptly having those theories reward or getting the middle finger when a fire bird turns you into ashes) this is the game for you. I can't recommend this to everyone, it's lots of tool tip reading and is in no way flashy compared to other roguelikes(lites) but has immense depth in exchange. There are millions of build paths and it's your job to figure out which are coherent. Lot of fun.
A wonderful game that does exactly what it says on the tin: streamlined controls that respect your time in a "broken build sandbox". The game is both short and dense in the best possible ways. No pomp or circumstance; pick your build and get going. On sale at $5, it's hard to pass up.
My only complaint is that, due to the nature of the game, you aren't actually encouraged or pressured to try new things. There are many interesting builds that may never catch your eye. Experiment!

Bought it for five dollars on sale, and 105 minutes flew by. If you like theory crafting janky builds, this is the appeal. I'm not a fan of traditional roguelikes because of the interface/controls can be very overwhelming, but for this game it's very simple for me to follow. Impulse buy or on the fence? Worth it the sale price if you ask me.

I actually beat the game on my first run. Maybe it was a fluke but kinda disappointed. I did like it and there does seem to be alot to unlock. For the price I would say its very good.

spent hours trying to figure out a good cheese build to no avail, unlocking new stuff very slowly and dying *right* at the end just about every time
said "♥♥♥♥ it" and ooga booga maxxed a lochran mubarizun with eris and prestiged anroth (translation: a real "brain warrior"), with the gameplan of "big stick hit hard and fast" with absolutely no skills... and 3 shot the final boss
this game does not reward critical thinking as much as you would expect i must admit (either that or im just stupid), but its super fun to theory craft
Played the demo thought it was aight and I might've done everything already but hotdog the full release as a hell of a lot more stuff, there's so many ways of playing this game just about anything goes.
You can have a build as complex as you want it to be or just as lazy as you want it to be, like one build i had was pressing space once and nuking the entire map in one press.
Bought the game yesterday and already clocked a whole 10 hours in a row on accident trying to brute force horrible builds, not giving up yet on them, it'll work eventually..

So mind numbingly addicting, you can easily get lost in the sauce with the amount of insane builds you can make. I will be playing this game for a long, long time.
Pulpy lore, quick builds, no BS. PoA holds so much depth, so much build variety, that I still don't feel like an expert at the game, even after 279 hours of play. Support the dev if you want to live out your Robert E. Howard fantasies in a build-porn roguelike.

A hidden masterpiece. Short but sweet, with MASSIVE replay potential. The game is only had to get into for the first 10 mins, but after you get past that. It becomes an amazing RPG centered around creating and mixing builds together.
It has amazing depth of gameplay, with simplicity at its core. It's super easy to get into, and is straight to the point and doesn't waste your time.

The game page's description of this as a "broken build sandbox" is more apt than anything I could come up with. Although it may technically be a roguelike, its so different from any other roguelike I've played. Instead, I'd call Path of Achra a theorycrafting game. For lots of RPGs (The Elder Scrolls, Baldur's Gate, etc.) people like to share their character builds online- the combination of gear, abilities, team compositions, etc. that they used to beat the game, and to discuss with others potentially game breaking or challenging builds for subsequent playthroughs. Dedicated fans of these games can have a lot of fun engaging in this "metagame." PoA offers a similar kind of pleasure, encouraging you to find a Culture, Class, Religion, and Prestige Class combo that will spam one of the four core actions (Attacking, moving, standing still, or praying) to obliterate hordes of enemies. Easily a quarter of my time spent playing Path of Achra is spent on the character select screen, mulling over options and planning my run out. Path of Achra is undoubtedly a cool game, but untraditional and sometimes overwhelming. If you're considering getting it, I'd highly recommend playing the demo to get a feel for it yourself.
its an incredible, imaginative game. Snippets of a rich, dark fantasy world are uncovered with every additional playthrough, which each take less than 30 minutes. A ridiculous amount of replayability, and for those who love minmaxing their way into that one OP build, the paths are almost limitless. Thanks, Ulfsire.
incredible game. its incredible. idk what else to say. its a game that nails an itch i have for amazing gameplay and worldbuilding and character creation without too many rules and things to remember but enough that its still complex and has a high skill ceiling. this game is so amazing. i love it.

Path of Achra is a "unique" game that is basically a rogue-like dungeon-crawler, heavily-reliant on character customization (and RNG). After 16 hours I still don't really know what the story is, but you're basically like this champion who has to progress along a path to slay some nerd, so that you can get a victory screen. I'm sure this game's story has had a ton of work put into it and I appreciate the developer's efforts, as the enemy designs are strange and varied, plus all the classes, races, and gods all blend in with each other (apparently the developer even plans to make another game from it). But for me, a lot of it just seems like "fantasy words" thrown together without much relevance, if that makes sense (like all you actually care about is what numbers make what go up or down). Imagine like an Elden Ring storyline, except nothing is explained anywhere so all you have is "o struggler killed the God at The End of the World before passing through the Astrolith." And what that comes down to in-game, is literally just two achievements. I just think it's silly.
Regardless, I'm being too harsh. The actual gameplay is great. You basically pick a race, a class, and a god from a small, but ever-growing collection. This determines starting attributes, gear, and abilities. Some are easy, and some can change your gameplay entirely (like requiring you to fight without gear). What you can do in-game is move or use an ability, if you have it. You actually attack automatically, if you can, otherwise you "move into" enemies. You can also automate everything. Your ultimate goal is to keep leveling up, which will allow you to unlock powers that you define your character around. These vary a lot. And I mean a lot, a lot. One can resurrect the dead, one can heal you based on fire damage, one turns you into a plant, one teleports you, etc.. You can mix and match these to make "overpowered" characters. Plain and simple, it's addictive and fun.
The game can progress very quickly, and you may find yourself being screwed because you leveled poorly (going for a pure "blood" build and then facing an enemy who is immune to blood damage). But this doesn't feel unfair, it feels like it's on you for not taking advantage of the game's mechanics (also you can usually choose what enemies to face each level). You may notice from the trailer that the "events" of things can happen very quickly, and they can, even on low speed. You may find yourself dying and go "wait, what just happened?" and there may be a perfectly logical reason, but the game doesn't really give you enough of a chance to process it because of how some of the calculations work. Overall, once you grasp the basics this is a very fun game that you can easily pick up and do a few runs when you're bored.

[*]While most of the game is fair, I encountered a few runs where I can comfortably make the comment that some environments are questionable. You may find yourself just huddling by the entrance picking off enemies one-by-one. I also found myself in "exhaustion" battles with some enemies, where I would inevitably win, but only after like 1000+ turns, due to the damage resistance issue, but I also didn't take enough damage to die.
[*]Some upgrades have questionable consequences, which players may not understand and will subsequently avoid.
[*]There's A LOT to keep track of in this game when it comes to stats (more specifically status effects). It might be overwhelming.

По сути игра рогалик-автобатлер. Выглядит страшновато и запутанно при первом запуске, но на деле всё довольно просто на первых циклах: жми себе tab и пробел, да качай/собирай билд своей мечты. И собирать тут есть чего. Понравилось, но интерфейс не самый удобный, и разобраться в механиках и в том, что происходит в логе, может быть непросто, хотя описания предметов и навыков неплохие.

The game is overwhelming when you first start but quickly becomes easy to play. It definitely plays a lot like an auto battler and the loot does not usually seem to make or break a run, just helps you scale into the later stages of the game. Winning a run seems to be mostly dictated by what build you go for. Overall, a fun experience.

At 150 hours its possible I enjoy this game. Unless Im one of those strange people that have way too many hours and put dislike. This time at least, I am not.
If you enjoy buildcrafting, this game is 100% the game for you.
Grasping the basics takes no more than an hour and once you do that it instantly becomes addicting and fun. I really enjoy the versatility and diversity in literally every aspect. The monologues (if that’s what you’d call them) at the starts of the runs are very cool and a detail I really appreciate. Overall yes, I definitely recommend this game, I’m not much of a big dungeon crawler person but in my quest of trying to diversify my game taste this has definitely done me well!

It's simple and deep at the same time: you can spend hours planning a single bluild or just merge simple interaction between race, class, gods and powers to achieve amazing results.
An then you can search the community to see what other players have uncovered and try their builds.
Currently i'm trying to win every achievements and (Mostly because i'm autistic), and i'm still having fun at most of the runs.
Sometimes the game crushes but probably it's just my old PC, and you never lose many progress.
I don't know what what I'm doing.

The perfect roguelike in every way. Fantastically imaginative character creation options and build variety, beautiful art, and just enough writing with an evocative style that makes Achra feel uniquely mysterious and alive. Cannot recommend it enough.

Easy Recommendation. You can go ham on so many builds and the versatility in how you build them is so crazy.
Fun, build-based roguelike with just enough in-combat choice making to keep runs fresh and interesting. Lots of things to try out, and runs being a length where you can easily start and finish one in a single session is a great choice for this kind of roguelike. There's some room for improvement with the UI and feedback on what is happening on screen, especially when you have a ton of reactions happening, but it gets a bit easier to parse with a few hours in the game.
what a game, it cannot be undestated the amount of build you can go freely with this game, although the higher cycle limit some build potential. it still end up being the most memorable rpg roguelike i have played in my time.

a naked goblin that fist enemies with gasses and heal himself each time the gas is applied to enemies
a summoner that kills their own summon to damage enemies
a big bonk damage weapon that can hit 1 mil while also having a huge range for the weapon
an absolute fat unit that can basically curbstomp any enemies as long we are heavy
just buy it, its cheap and it provided so many hours and content to try
It's great. Very focused on building, well, builds, and not so much individual choices during combat. But very cool and a unique style of game
This game is pretty great and addicting. It has a lot of depth in build options and it really lets you customize and figure things out. Also, the dev is amazing. My save got borked, and they spent the time rebuilding my save and progress. 10/10 dev.
A perfect game for those who like the build-making aspect of games like Path of Exile, Diablo, etc. The build variety is massive and the game doesn't try to stop you from having fun. Instead, making busted builds is the entire point of the game.
Don't expect there to be much of actual, mechanical gameplay. It's more of an autobattler.
This game is fantastic. It has great atmosphere, music and lore. The build variety is great, and has high replayability.

After stumbling into the Seventh Cycle of Apocalypse by standstill cheesing as an Arba Summoner of Ikshana, i can definitely tell you that i'm probably the latter since i scarcely have a clue as to how the hell i did it.

I did not really like it at first I thought it was too complicated.
Kept dying early and keeping track of all the stats was a lot.
I still think it's confusing but I really try to think about every upgrade I do now cause if you just go with vibes you will lose.
I was about to not recommend it out of spite but then I randomly made this build where every attack triggered another attack that triggered another attack and then healed me and then re-triggered the first attack tha.... basically managed to have an infinite loop of attack and healing and destroyed the first run. When it happened I realized how to play the game and i'm having a much better time.

Few games offer this level of creative freedom. Luckily there are limits to that freedom, so that you don't get completely paralyzed with choice. Still there are more possible combinations than you can explore in a lifetime.

If Tales of Maj'Eyal was faster and more hackable. Absolutely brilliant 'just one more run' game with wild build diversity.
The game is decent, but it is just about making builds. There's not much to actual gameplay, basically decide if you want to stand still, cast a prayer, or hold right click to autowalk/battle. There's not a ton of variation on the actual run, you will find the same equipment over and over. Basically the run variation is you can choose different starting perks and then as you level you can level up a few spells per run, and after spending enough skill points you can pick a class that is for a single magic type (fire, poison, etc.) or a hybrid between two. All of the achievements are for winning with the different classes, so the replayability is just figuring out what skills (and starting perks) let you win as a class. I think it gets kind of boring after a few runs because the actual gameplay is repetitive, genuinely this might as well be an autobattler, but it kept me entertained for a few hours at least.
Great game, very deep customization. Love the minimal inputs. Crunchy artstyle and great soundtrack that I always have on repeat while playing. To top it all of it the story and worldbuilding is amazing. Highly recommend!

This game is everything the description says it is, and more. It's got interesting tactical builds, engaging turn-based combat that can go as fast as you want it to, and compelling pixel art.
The real 'hidden gem' here for me though, is the writing and worldbuilding. The Fantasy writing is incredibly efficient, using very few words to convey deep and interesting concepts, that invite the reader to engage with the setting. It's inspiring stuff.

That's what this game is. Simple, but really fockin' hard to beat.

Some other reviews have tackled my thoughts pretty extensively so I won't go too deep here. This may be the perfect game for you as it is has fully distilled the stat maxing and build setup formula to its barest components. Adding numbers where they seem best to be added and moving to the next door.
By doing this, to me, it has removed the experience of playing a game and has fully moved into the auto-battler experience. It's a popular genre and a lot of people like it, but when I play I just think of other games I could be playing and that doesn't work for me.
10/10 would run headlong into a group of Storm Knights again
One of my 'forever games'. The dev should be insanely proud of what he created here. There is not a single other game in existence that has holding down a single button feel this satisfying.
