A throwback to late 90s and early 00s game design. The levels are twisting mazes, the gunplay is solid, and the design and graphics are clean and easy to read 90% of the time. The remaining 10% is the screen filling with exploding auto-ops and obscuring dangers that may lurk behind their debris clouds.
I highly recommend picking the game up as it is a pure experience without being Overloaded with design bloat.

I bought this back when it came out and played it a little, but recently revisited it and played through it completely. It's a lot more fun on a high end computer from the future. The graphics look good and the moment to moment experience of flying around a 3D world is fun. Stuff blows up real good. The controls are notably better than other 6DOF games.
It has a few design quirks. Your ship and weapons can be upgraded with upgrade points and super upgrade points that are hidden in the levels, but you can't go back to try to find more, so you could easily shaft yourself and be stuck in scenario that might be too difficult for you. There are frequently combat rooms with a lot of enemies that contain a temporary powerup to help you, but you can't find it until after all the enemies are cleared out. The penultimate weapon, the fusion cannon equivalent, is underwhelming. It doesn't do a huge amount of damage, uses a lot of energy, is slow firing, has to charge up, and shakes your ship around too much while it is charged. The standard laser weapon is obsolete as soon as you get the cyclone. You're basically going to be using the cyclone or the driller most of the game.
Those are pretty minor though, and I would still recommend this game in 2026. It is better than Sublevel Zero and Desecrators.

The flight model is fun since I'm used to using roll and lateral boost and the combat is very high paced and exciting. Its absolutely worth the priced on discout.
With that said, the reason I'm not recommending is that the campaign is linear, If you missed powerups and secrets from a level, you can never get it again on this playthrough. You will need to start a new campaign with no upgrades. On level 2 I looked everywhere and still only got 5/16 secrets. You also cannot change the difficulty anymore once you started a campaign. I have not played descent series and don't care if this design has anything to do with that series.
The game isn't so bad that I'd refund it, but I cannot recommend it given the frustrating campaign design, which seems intentional because if it wasn't they'd have fixed it by now. Therefore I'll keep the game but leave a negative review.
edit: all the good upgrades and secrets being absolutely impossible to find does not help.

If you can handle being surrounded by robotic ships shooting, bombing or even crashing into you as you try to destroy the reactor then you might be able to handle this fantastic game. You'll have the ability to move 360 inside an infested mine. The job is to retrieve the human workers in cryotubes and then to overload the reactor causing an explosive escape.

This game has excellent sound, music, and controls. Level designs are very unique and gameplay is addictive. Graphics are technically conservative but with excellent art design. This is the modern version of Descent. Runs great on conservative hardware.

I bought this game on a VR sale, advertised as a VR game, with VR support. What I got was a modern version of flat-screen Descent. If I wanted to play flat-screen Descent (at all, nevermind on my HMD with non-VR controls), I would have dug up my copy of OLD flat-screen Descent and played that, instead of buying this...
For true 3D experience, nothing beats this game. I loved Descent back in the day, this one is SOOOO much better, but keeps the same awesome gameplay.

+ pretty cool soundtrack which adds to the atmosphere
+ features an upgrade system, which rewards exploration even beyond short-term power-ups
+ amazing lighting- and particle-effects make the combat really satisfying
The Bad:
- it copies it's inspiration to a fault what with cool enemy designs but mostly formulaic levels; as such, it struggles to have an identity or leave a lasting impression
- most wall textures and level layouts are pretty bland and generic, many areas look similar, making navigation harder than it should be
- they really didn't think about balancing with those upgrades (who in their right mind upgrades the boost in a game like this??)
The Summary:
The game 'Overload' is almost as generic as it's title but if you're a big fan of the Descent series (like me), you're bound to have a good time with this one.

We don't have games like this anymore, which is a shame because it's clear just how much fun it is as soon as you start playing. It's got a great atmosphere. I'd urge the creators to make a completely modern aRPG version with a story, lobby, and on-foot exploration elements, even open-world. I'm sure it would sell to the current generation, just look at how successful the new versions of Doom have been!

It's exactly what you want if you want to play a modern version of Descent. Ball busting bots, Smooth interior flight design, satisfying arsenal, fun fighting arenas, spacey soundtrack highlighted with tasty electric guitar riffs, mazelike levels crammed with secrets, satisfying upgrades all while the gameplay is both punishing and rewarding. Story and plot are a little weak, but that's standard for a flight sim game/boomer FPS. If you can handle a VR headset it is a surreal virtual reality experience that makes the environment entierly immersive. The voice talent is pretty good as well, even if you are just listening to Automated characters and voice logs. Punchy zapper enemies that are satisfying to shoot and kill. It just comes back to the opening statement. It's exactly what you want from a modern version of Descent.

Had this on wishlist since release on Console (recently said FUUUU and returned to PC) to get it at a sale and the price didn't dip a dime in 7 years and now I find it to a almost undecent cost and 2 minutes in I feel like I could pay 30 euros more for it :).
To anyone that has ever felt the soulful caress of this game's predecessor "Descent" or games like "Quake". Buy now and if you didn't smile at least once when you're scraping paint off cave walls and putting rails through the cockpits of enemies I will refund you! Einfach ein tolles Gefühl durch Stationen zu fliegen, Rätsel lösen und dabei diverse Gegner mit diversen Waffen zu bekämpfen.

Wer Descent gemocht hat, wird dieses Spiel auch mögen. Ich hatte eine sehr kurze Eingewöhnungszeit, was bei so einer Art Spiel normal ist.
Dieses Spielt ist Descent durch und durch. Teilweise erinnern mich manche Level sogar daran, was ich aber nicht schlimm finde. Das Design ist klar Descent. Die Waffenauswahl ebenso. Es gibt auch einen Holobot, den man losschicken kann, wenn man sich nicht mehr zurecht findet. Ich habe nun Descent schon recht lange nicht mehr gespielt, aber in meiner Erinnerung habe ich mich darin viel mehr verirrt als in diesem Spiel bislang. Insgesamt, nach fast 2 Stunden Spielzeit bin ich hier wesentlich motivierter als damals bei Descent, aber wer weiß wie sich das mit späteren Leveln noch so entwickelt. Die Grafik ist ok- nicht atemberaubend aber doch recht gelungen, wie ich finde.
Was hier denke ich hinzugefügt wurde - man kann sein Schiff zwischen den Leveln upgraden. Dafür muss man im Level Punkte einsammeln. Das Upgrade Menü fand ich anfangs etwas unintuitiv. Es wäre hier auf jeden Fall gut, wenn man die Verteilung der Punkte, die man gerade vergeben hat nochmals rückgängig machen kann.
Ich meine, ich musste erst einmal verstehen, dass die meisten Upgrades nunmal alle meine 5 Punkte, die ich zur Verfügung hatte auf einmal benötigen - ich dachte erst, ich kann hier ein bisschen verteilen. Aber gut, sobald man das verstanden hat...
Also alles in allem Daumen hoch - wie gesagt, wer Descent mochte, wird dieses Spiel auch mögen.
Is good. It fixes (most) of the gameplay problems that Descent had.
Basically, the FPS I always wanted - 6DoF with huge levels and focus on exploration as much as combat makes for a fantastic experience. Also, robots - I'm not exactly a fan of gore but can appreciate a good explosion, which this game has aplenty.
Played with M/KBD - controls take a moment to get used to, but become your second nature very quickly; autolevelling to nearby surfaces is welcome, although about 20% of the time it gets in the way instead of helping, so I'd suggest at least dropping it to low. 3D map straight out of Metroid Prime helps with navigation immensely, even if it can get a bit hard to understand in areas with dense geometry, plus there's the Hologuide bot for the hopelessly lost or panicking. The story is okay - not super interesting, but works fine as background for the action and even gets somewhat poetic towards the end, even if it takes a bit too long for it to finally get somewhere. Music is overall pretty good and fitting, even if only a few songs are memorable (mainly those by Jerry Berlongieri), although I felt the track for the final level was a tad underwhelming.
Out of the flaws - I'd say the biggest one is lack of memorable bosses, all of them being more or less souped up versions of normal enemies with bigger health bars. Design of the enemy auto-ops is not very distinct from one another and you'll probably largely distinguish them by their shot types. No indication that you got all of the secrets/upgrades until you finish the level. There's also the general lack of variety of designs and objectives when it comes to levels themselves, but in this case I'd simply say you can't have too much of a good thing, plus the final few missions do shake things up.
One thing to note for Linux users specifically: running the Windows version via Proton may give you noticeably better performance than the native build does (result of OpenGL on native vs DX11 -> Vulkan under Proton), but switching between the two might destroy your save file. Don't be like me, make backups first if you'll decide to try this or just use Proton right away.
So, overall, it's something like 8.5/10 for me - a couple of things could be improved, but it's a great game nonetheless. Also, make sure to check out Overload First Strike, which is a fantastic fan remake of the original Descent in Overload.

A modern Descent experience through and through with a few fun additions of its own. It got a little annoying at the end on Hot Shot but so did my beloved Descent so what can I say. This is a really satisfying shooter whether you've played Descent or not. I stopped paying attention to the story for a little bit in the middle but I regret it because it kinda went somewhere! Good game
Overload is the best representative of the Descent genre today.
The game’s mechanics are extraordinarily well-designed specifically from the perspective of the Descent genre. This is a very pleasant piece of news for every fan of a particular genre—and for fans of the Descent genre in particular it's especially welcome, because no commonly accepted, unified standard for the Descent genre has yet been formed. Because of this, developers who try to advance the genre’s quality move forward with great risks to their game’s market success, and with a high significance placed on every such innovation in Descent-style game mechanics.
Long ago, mistakes in gameplay design nearly ruined *Descent 3*, and together with that game almost destroyed the genre itself. For this reason, I am very glad that the developers of Overload worked with fantastic precision in everything related specifically to gameplay mechanics—avoiding mistakes and introducing innovations that the genre as a whole badly needed. These innovations are so important that I decided to highlight them as separate points:
1. There is a very well-implemented autolevelling system along four axes — something that has never existed in the genre before. It makes the game far more polished and user-friendly for both experienced players and newcomers.
2. Your ship reacts very subtly when touching the walls of the maze. You can move forward slowly by simply pressing yourself against the wall with a side-strafe or a downward strafe. This is a very well-thought-out solution.
3. The lighting in the corridors is designed extremely well. Some tunnels are brightly lit, others are dark. If you want to advance unnoticed through a dark tunnel, it’s better to turn off your headlight or use a flare.
However, the game contains one very rough mistake—one that should never appear in any 3D shooter, and especially not in a Descent-style game. If the player holds two opposite strafes at the same time, the ship or character should stop exactly as if the originally pressed strafe had been released. Players in shooters almost never release their strafe key to stop—they always tap the opposite strafe to halt precisely where they want. This technique improves positional control in the game space.
In Overload, this behavior does not work because the ship will most likely start moving in the direction of the strafe that was pressed later, even though the opposite strafe is still being held. This is a very serious mistake. I hope the developers will fix it.

I dunno. It never lived up to Descent³ for me. Every level looked the same, most enemies looked the same, the singular objective was the same, the secret hunting was a slog, the audio was meh. None of it was terrible - I just realized I was forcing myself to play it at the half-way point and moved on. Your mileage may vary - get it on sale.

Hotshot difficulty
FINALLY the 6DOF game I've been looking for. FPS level based shooter, but with a joystick in each hand! YESSS Simple enough to be easy to pick up, devilish enough to challenge me, and with secrets and a difficulty ratchet so I can replay it!? Every level (so far) has introduced a new enemy type, and at least one new primary or secondary weapon, which is a realllly nice and familiar pace.
Controls are fully customizable on my VKB Gladiators, and they mapped SUPER easy, in-game, which is both rare and nice. Everything I'd expect from an interface for a game like this. I look forward to sinking a few dozen hours into this to get REALLY good. :)
Descent, an updated version. One of the greatest games, ever. If you are fan of 6doF games, this is for you. These devs were the ones originally associated with the first Descent games and they stayed true to the model. Further, it can be enhanced with Olmod and the campaign from Descent: First Strike.

Oculus mode doesn't work. Controls don't make sense on controller. There's a vertical thrust option, but no down??? Gameplay gets boring fast given the randomness of the levels, and the same enemies everywhere.
Absolutely lives up to its promise as a spiritual successor to the Descent games. Definitely worth the price.

After the sheer disappointment and fiasco that became of the copyright holders of the Descent IP trying to re-boot the game, this re-imagining by the actual programmers of the old game is a worthy tribute to the groundbreaking (at the time) release of Descent. Descent was a game that various PC manufacturers used to include on CD-ROMs with their PCs to showcase the power of (at the time) cutting edge Intel processors, leaving competitors like the Commodore Amiga, Atari and Apple Mac in the dust. I was 5 years old when Descent was released, and back then I only had access to the shareware version bundled with a Packard Bell Windows 95 PC, I have since re-played a bit of the full version and its successor, Descent 2, and experiencing them as an adult and being able to understand the story has made memories come flooding back. Overload is just about perfection in re-imagining what Descent was intended to be back in the day, my only gripe is that when a reactor blows, it makes a weird alien sound telling you so, and not similar to the announcement in Descent which put the sense of doom into you. The story is good and it genuinely feels like something out of the Descent universe, if dumbed down slightly. I have been able to experience it thanks to an invincibility cheat, but even then it is a welcome challenge to work out how to blow a reactor, and I always find the hostages, or as they are now called "cryopods". I highly recommend this game.
Many people saying "Descent clone" or "Spiritual successor"... FYI: this one was actually made by the devs of the original Descent games - that's why it's so damn good; so in my view, it is a proper successor.
This game feels like a re-mastered version of Descent. If you liked Descent, you'll love this game. The music is so spot-on too; feels like the original. VR implementation is a really nice addition too!

Very fun game, classic Descent gameplay polished to the maximum. All the weapons are fun, the lighting is amazing, sound is good, level design is quite good.
If I had to criticize somehting, I'd say a little more variety in the levels would be nice, the number of different textures feels lower than descent 2 and 3. Otherwise, excellent game to relax and enjoy at any difficulty level. The challenge of navigating the levels and finding the secrets is my favorite part.
You fly around, go "pew pew pew" and things die. It's great.
Awesome. Real Descent from those that created it.
Overload is just your basic Descent clone for those of you who don't know what Descent was it was a first person shooter from the days of DOS in which you pilot a gunship through a mine moving freely in three dimensions meaning you can go up down left right and forward and back without the effect of gravity essentially moving in three dimensional space as you wish. Overload follows the same basic premise as Decent moving through a mine eliminating hostile robots before destroying the reactor at the heart of the mine and running like crazy to escape the explosion along the way you rescue people and search for hidden pickups and powerups. What attracted me to Overload was the VR support it is a great game to play in VR and it is well implemented though not required as the game can be played non VR as well though i highly recommend playing in VR the style of gameplay lends itself well to VR I highly recommend this game especially if you are and old school gamer like myself and enjoyed the Descent series back in the day.
It feels like Descent, plays like Descent, even sounds a lot like Descent.
Is it a Descent clone, or "Spiritual Successor"?
Don't know. But I do know I'm having too much fun to care which it is!

Basically what my toddler brain thought Descent 1 looked like back in the day. Perfect modern D1/D2 style game, and beautiful VR

What an amazing experience, when i learnt how to control the ship proper it really went from regular shoot em ups to the oldschool doom/quake with full on spinning and blasting and just having fun, great secrets, great levels, having a really good time!

Si buscas un Descent moderno. Este es sin duda tu juego, ya que lo crearon ellos.
Si buscas diversión y un reto. Este es tu juego.
Si te pica la curiosidad, tan solo un poquito. Puedes probar la demo. Puede ser que te encante. O te marees por ser tu primera vez.
Lo malo: Probablemente nunca veamos una secuela.
Lo bueno: Es prácticamente Descent 4.
Con mods hasta puedes recrear batallas intergalácticas.
Para mi es un 10/10 fácil.
A fantastic modern take on Descent. If you liked that game and you're not too...precious...you'll like this one. It also has references to the year 2112, if that means anything to you.
