A Flash Style game that may appeal to some, but not most.

Osmos is a very simple game. You're a small blue orb that propels itself by launching small pieces of itself behind it. With your mouse, you control exactly which direction you propel yourself in, and how much you propel yourself, based on click or pressing the button (tap or hold).

That's it, that's the whole game. Each level will give you a challenge based on big you start, how large other particles start, and if you need to absorb one of two enemy types. The game also utilizes an ambient synth style soundtrack that's meant to be soothing.

For me, I found this game too fiddly to be relaxing, but not difficult enough to offer a fun puzzle challenge. I believe this game is meant to be relaxing, but because it's so physics based, and difficult, I think most people would struggle to find the gameplay relaxing. If you don't start growing your orb right away, you can get caught in a no win situation. Even if you get quite large, if you want to move to get more orbs, you have to make yourself smaller, and the pieced you throw behind you will ricochet and move other large orbs together, with can put you in a bind. That is to say, you need to move yourself quickly and with purpose, but then it's usually best to just let your orb move around on its own to pick up the rest of the pieces.

Maybe you'll find this relaxing, I found it boring.

This game takes the very beginning of "Spore" and turns it into a full game with multiple modes and great gameplay. This is one of those games that I played on my phone first and then saw on PC. Its the same game either way and totally worth playing as a wind-down or Zen-type experience. Highly recommended if you enjoyed the opening sequence of "Spore" and want more of that.

I'm sticking to my "i won't thumbs down even tho i hate it", cuz I don't want to be quite that spiteful. ;P

Been on my "play next" / "players like you, love..." shelf for a while. I eyeballed it, and kept my distance for a while (game-related pun not intended). Today on a bored whim I foolishly installed and started playing.

I won't thumbs down though personally I find it loathsome.

I _hate_ physics puzzle games, and also not much of a fan of "miss one properly timed click and you fail the whole run" sort of games (e.g. hardcore platformers).

Well, guess which two genres this game combines... :(

(For that matter, I kinda hate "time mechanics" too! :P)

The superficial presentation that it's much more arcadey and "casual fun" than it actually is... Don't fall for it!

On one hand, any game that gives the player a near-instant "restart level" function is commendable for QoL. (Hotline Miami comes to mind.) On the other hand, in terms of beating your head against the wall levels of difficulty ... such a feature is not a good sign.

I'll still try to slog thru as it appeared "innocent" enough, with so few achievements, and maybe there's a [i]relatively[/i] quick 100% here. (Sure ... 112 mins played, 1 achievement unlocked. Not off to a great start then are we? :P)

Minimal bonus points for illustrating gravitational systems and orbital mechanics. As I'll most likely never launch anything into space, much less get there myself, anything that helps me "get there" in terms of imagination, is appreciated. (And, looking at community hub, there are ppl quite a bit more informed than me who are doing formal guides using proper terminology etc. Hoping that after browsing a few of those, I'll feel less helpless in-game.)

But extra malus points for trying to pair it with a "chill" soundtrack, as if that makes up for the game being super frustrating. Ugh.

BTW I absolutely got this in a bundle. Never would have purchased it directly. I know my tastes and this ain't them.

Aaaand, several play-hours later, "breezing thru" some achievements, then hitting a brick wall on a certain level (F3A3). Very tempted to rage-thumbs-down, cuz i'm just petulant like that. :P So, why didn't I?

In searching for "tips", etc., was amazed to find out the dev actually wrote a blog to the effect of "we see so many of u having probs with these, so here is explanation of the technique." I wouldn't call it exactly a walkthru but it is a clear description of the skills/techniques u will need to use.

I'm impressed.

This could have been a truly mellow fellow, but no.. devs want u to make a career out of this.

And btw the gravity sim isn't what I thought, either. Not only does [i]your[/i] mass not attract anything, but the mechanics of the attractor objects are such that the smallest possible attractor can absorb basic objects of any size. Oof.

Anyway, let me tell you about a superior piece of software... It's called "Cheat Engine". And the skills I learned [i]there[/i] are at least transferrable, whereas those I learned in osmos, are not. :P

OSMOS everything i had hoped for....i had been wanting/looking for a microverse game of this sort for years...it seemed like such an obvious idea...and yet i kept running into games like genome guardian, survivor cells and microcosmum...which are cool but not quite the itch i was hoping to scratch...too shooty-shoot-shot-pew-pew for any kind of realistic take on the microverse...microcosmum is close...but still too game-y (as andrew zimmern would say)...osmos, conversely, is exactly the kind of aesthetic and contemplative/relaxing/strategic/tactical gameplay that i was hoping for with a physics based 'cell-eat-cell' simulator (for lack of a better term)...

anywho, thanks for this...wish y'all woulda done more with it in the SEVENTEEN YEARS since its release (sequels? DLC? revival? anything?)

TL:DR - Fun early, drags and is unfun mid / late levels.

The early levels are fun osmosis centered, semi-puzzle related levels. Once the game shifts to the orbital mechanics the enjoyment takes a nose dive, and you easily spend hours just waiting for two sphere's orbits to line up enough to make an adjustment. There is a reason we had teams of people doing these calculations in the early days, and now let computers do them.

好了，我现在已经拿下了F3C-3，我分享一下过关思路：这一关是三个吸引体围着一个大吸引体转，间隔六十度角，我们在最小的上面。
我们首先要尽可能把围绕这个吸引体的较大尘埃给吸了，漏一点没事，确保你在中心吸引体能有三四个尘埃比你小就好。一般你在中心吸引体吸了一两个就可以慢慢磨，全部磨完都行。然后出山去乱杀其他三个吸引体。

（注意！：在出生的吸引体上面收割到较大尘埃并转移到中心吸引体上面这段时间，不宜浪费过多时间，因为中心体的尘埃会相互吞噬。你花费太多时间再去的时候，就会发现没有比你小的尘埃了，所以这段时间务必速战速决）

你出山吞噬了一个小吸引体之后，不要连吐，要剩下那两个小的自己把你吸过去。逆着公转方向吐一点点，保持在轨道上的静止。

这里有一个细节：我们在吃小吸引体的时候在外围往回被吸，就是以中心体为参照，在三个小吸引体外面一丢丢轨道。如果不这样我们就会冲到墙壁自杀了。
也不要连点，否则体重掉太快吃不了中心体。再强调一遍：节省体力的方式就是被吸引体把我们拉过去。

好了，吸完三个小吸引体就会出现两种情况（你按我的方法操作出现的情况）1：被中心吸引体拉走，并且是蓝色的，那就等通关就好。2：围着转且中心体是蓝色，这里一点点缩短轨道就行了，千万不要连点装b啊，我初见本来过了就是因为这种逆天操作才又卡了两三个小时。
没别的了，我准备拿下全成就，除了智慧体章节都挺简单的，智慧体拼思路和手速的，我磨了一个小时也过了。祝你们通关吧。还有一件事，能不急就不急，慢慢磨就是能通关这个《本轮》章节

One of my first purchase on Steam. It's such a fun game for the genre, the scaling of difficulty is solid. This is a super simple game. This is 31MB, feels like a pretty complete game with good soundtrack with a minimalist chill electro vibe. There's good mechanic learning as you play. NGL back in 2009, there wasn't a lot of those flash game like snake eater and and such and this single player was pretty satisfying with some pretty difficult challenges (see the image library for proof.

Музыкальное сопровождение простенькое, но создает эффект некой особой атмосферы. В этой игре буквально растворяешься, будто тебя поместили в камеру сенсорной депривации. Весь мир исчезает, и остаются только клетки: маленькие, большие, умные, глупые, прожорливые, сытые, жалкие, смертельно опасные. После такого стараешься пореже наступать в лужи — там ведь тоже жизнь.

Brilliant concept, terribly executed. The game cheats in exceptionally cruel ways, and unless you play pixel perfect, every time, you will struggle and fail.

The music, graphics, and concept are all incredible, but it is mired in absolute **** gameplay and I cannot recommend it.

This game is really well made and in combination with its music it seems that it is most relaxing game ever made. Well, it actually is if you play only first levels. Later levels caused some serious butt clenching and I don't think I have ever been that close to table flipping because of a game... and I have never been that angry on bubbles in my life!

Anyways joking aside this game is a masterpiece and I definitely recommend it. :D

Aside from being a serene, (mostly) calming, and unique game, my main fascinations with Osmos is how much it can teach you about physics. You get an intuitive understanding of Newton's laws of motion, momentum, the first law of thermodynamics, gravity (to some extent) and orbital mechanics. All this (and probably more), despite its beautiful simplicity.

...and then I tried to complete all Force stages...

Patience is key. Use Z to change the seed if it's too difficult. That feature is your friend :)

Only relaxing part about the game was the soundtrack and visuals.

最恶心的内容：操作。到后面，经常需要做的一件事就是等待机会，等待大细胞吞噬小细胞，等待轨道交会，等待一个合适的位置发动引力弹弓从一个吸引体周围转移到另一个吸引体身边。重要的是，操作手感稀碎，喷发物质，基本来说只能点按，长按有个加速度，可能一下就把一小半的物质抛出去了。时间加减速，很难控制，快么太快，可能没来得及刹车就死了，可能你刚准备吸收的星球又碰到了一个更小的，瞬间成长起来反杀。以上的操作手感，实际上导致了玩家在关卡中需要进行漫长且多次的等待，极其耗费时间，而且可能等着等着就会发现，大的星球已经成长到你无法追赶的地步了，只能重开。而如此漫长的等待，面对的是一次不小心误触的中键、一次不注意的物质抛射就可能葬送一次大好运营，让人满心怒火，瞬间红温。他在消耗好感和获取爽感这一点上是做得极其垃圾的。我的建议是，既然都有时间加速减速了，如果能有一个时间回溯机制，允许玩家挽救自己的运营，就能一下子好起来。还有围绕吸引体搭建起来的那几关，莫名其妙的，就把边界设计成了物质只要触碰就会消失的屏障，意味着你只要用物质加速了，基本就等同于永远失去了这部分物质，和其他关卡格格不入。而且这几个关卡的物质控制极其严格，这也是导致通关率骤减的原因。明明会反弹的屏障挺好的，你改了他干什么？

This is an indie game in the best sense of the word: it offers a unique core mechanic, builds the entire gameplay around it with a smooth learning curve, and wraps everything in visuals and a soundtrack that perfectly capture the game’s essence and tie the experience together.

Problem is that initially it presents itself as calming and relaxing experience, but closer to the end it turns into hardcore trajectory calculator with zero margin for error. Yikes!

And while I had enough patience to 100% complete it, this was not something I enjoyed.

Я поиграл в Osmos одновременно с Eufloria, тогда, в зародыше, это были почти одинаково короткие игры для репетативного и спокойного геймплея, чисто визуальные аркады, без особой сложности, каждый уровень почти 1 в 1 предыдущий с небольшими различиями.
Так воооот.
Прошло 15 лет.
Eufloria прошёл с удовольствием, все новые уровни и все новые механики вполне годные.
А вот эту проходил через силу, каждый второй уровень 1 в 1 предыдущий, с чисто минимальными отличиями, глобально 3 варианта развития и.... всё. Ничего нового больше не добавили, ничего не улучшили, проходить 20 минут уровень с максимальной аккуратностью и концентрацией это не проблема, проблема увидеть тоже самое на следующем. И на следующем. И ещё разок. Мда. Раньше она выглядела потрясающе для тогдашней графики, сейчас это воспринимаешь как Spore с обрезанными механиками.
Жаль.

Grow your cell by absorbing smaller cells. Sloppy controls. Gets repetitive very quickly. After completing the game there's not much to it thus no reason to come back. If you like these type of games play something multiplayer based like agar.io which was the king in this genre.

This game drove me insane, I haven't had a game piss me off as much as this game in a long time; that said, I somehow managed to complete it, mechanics aren't bad, but the levels can be VERY unforgiving depending on the seed (alt + Z is your friend). That said, it left me with a feeling of accomplishment, W game!

Osmos is a game that admittedly is somewhat special to me, in light that it was one of the items acquired for the still-deemed-to-be-almost-completely-insignificant 8th Grade Graduation event in 2010, yet also a completely baffling, confounding, fundamentally broken experience.

I haven't the foggiest of clues how literally [b]anyone[/b] could try to play through 2 of the three level branches in-game, and not only deem it a [b]finished product[/b] that's ready to send to market, but also charge $10 for it. Similarly, I very much want to know which game everybody that pushed its Metacritic Score up to [b]EIGHTY[/b] was playing, and/or how much of it was done so before passing judgement.

To delve into what's wrong with this slow, plodding, almost-entirely-unengaging disaster, I first need to have you, dear reader, imagine you're playing literally any game with a level (style of game doesn't matter), and end goal for said stage.

Now imagine that instead of making sure you have even the [b]chance[/b] of [b]starting to play[/b] this level, you instead need to repeatedly pause and generate a new map to make sure the game bothers giving you collision to stand on, then literally anything else that's needed to clear said stage.

I would say “This is at least two levels in Osmos”, however, this analogy is not over, because even if the game you're imagining gives you a starting piece of terrain, allows you to move within it, and grants you the equipment needed to have a chance at beating the stage, no guarantee exists the end goal was generated alongside it,

This is to say that after spending sometimes up to 10 minutes trying to beat this stage, you can be at the second to last action needed to fulfil the objective, only to find the switch you needed to push, unit you needed to spawn, and/or edge of the platform you need to jump from to get to the goal is completely missing.

Guess what this means you need to do? Keep generating a new map until the basics are granted, then hope the game gave you a complete level that can finished this time around.

[b][u]This is to say that levels in Osmos are not designed, they're generated, and not only that, seemingly nothing by any flags, checks, or programs are in-place to make sure said stage can be completed was bothered to be programmed[/u][/b], making the gameplay loop “play until you get stuck on a level, regenerate said level until you can even start to play it, and hope that the system blessed you with the apparently unheard-of privilege of being able to beat said stage.

I have gone back to this game at least twice since acquiring it almost 15 years ago, and each time, I reached a “level” that's not only entirely reliant on RNG to be able to not only do anything at-all in, but seemingly completely unable to be finished.

The first revisit saw one of the “Force” clusters be perpetually beyond even beginning, and while the A3B cluster seemed doable at first, after – no joke – at least 30 restarts, 1 hour and a half wasted, and only 15 that I wasn't completely blocked out of doing anything with, none of those were finished.

It gets worse, though, because in order to have a chance at defeating any enemy (in this case stationary blobs for most of the levels I bothered even trying to play) you – so to speak – need to take health from yourself, and give it to whichever adversary you may be facing. This already sounds completely unreasonable, but once you assimilate the “Health” of the other enemy, you grow to their size, unable to get through corridors, and use weaker ones to hope to try and beat the bigger ones, while hoping beyond hope nothing happens to give imperative health to your adversary, causing it to grow bigger, and completely block you off from progressing.

[b][u]The fundamental laws of game design state:[/u][/b]

1: If you must have a randomiser take the place of intentional design, include checks, and flags, then redundancy on redundancy to make sure every level can be completed via player agency, and skill, rather than the randomiser putting everything in.

2: Once these are in-place, make absolutely sure that everything it makes can be consistently completed, playing each level multiple times, and perhaps have multiple people also do so, to increase the amount of tested instances/generations.

3: Once everything is confirmed to be working [b][u]then[/u][/b] publish it.

As such, we reach the

[b][u]Verdict:[/u][/b] A seemingly-untested, unfinished-feeling frustration-fest that relies entirely on luck to allow the player to do anything, with two levels either taking hours of restarts to beat, or otherwise are completely impossible to finish.

[b][u]Placed In:[/u][/b] Were this acquired on any other occasion, I would have 0 qualms whatsoever about ousting it from my account such that I never have the temptation to be disappointed by it in the future again, but as it stands, it's shakily at 6: Traumatically Toxic, and “Remove it anyway.”

Not worth the price, not even close. It's a super old game now, but it looks like it's one of mobile phone games from when mobile phone games were representative of slightly-more-advanced-than-pong, which is what this is.

The soundtrack is decent, not something I'd disable or lower the volume while playing the game.

Osmos is a wonderful and calm experience - as long as you have a lot of patience. You play as a little mote absorbing other motes to become the biggest in most levels, or aiming to absorb specific motes in others. You expel a bit of your mass in order to move, so much of the game is based around trying to be very specific with where you move without expelling too much of your own mass.

The game has a very zen-like atmosphere, with ambient music and cool colors, so it's easy to assume the game is very relaxing. But don't be fooled - some of these levels are absolutely brutal. The game features a speed up and slow down time function which helps with the patience aspect, but there are plenty of times when you'll be speeding up just to have to make a split second movement decision and instead propel yourself right into something bigger than you. The most challenging levels are the orbital levels, or the "force" section of the game, where your mote is orbiting around something larger and you have to figure out how to move while still attached to your orbit. Some of the later levels require you to move from the orbit of one object to another and then back again. This was a very hard concept to wrap my head around and I spent hours on just the last level of the game, patiently gathering mass, switching between orbits, only to die by unfortunate timing or expelling too much of my own mass to absorb anything else. It was a massive challenge that felt very satisfying to complete, but there was absolutely some frustration and headache along the way.

Super zen, surprisingly addictive. The concept & controls are fairly easy to understand, but there's just the right element of challenge between getting used to propelling yourself with momentum and various other clever elements you'll find in later levels. This is a pretty great game to play before bed due to how calm it's general vibe is.

A Relaxing yet Frustrating Puzzle game. I really wanted to complete this game, I got incredibly close to almost doing it. However, my patience has finally ran out.

The game is fun, it uses the concept of getting bigger by absorbing the smaller objects and makes puzzles out of it. The game has a very tranquil ambiance to it and the soundtrack helps it to be a sort of meditative experience. The game was very relaxing and fun at first, but then you play the later levels and the casual fun turns more into frustration. The first few levels are easy and somewhat challenging as well, for the most part a lot of the levels feel good on the difficulty spectrum. But then you get to the very few last levels of the certain zones that you have to complete (Specifically Epicycle) and it turns into the most monotonous, annoying, and almost impossible puzzles that you have to complete. You have to be so incredibly precise with how much matter you waste that if you use up too much you softlock yourself from ever being able to complete it and have to start all the way from the beginning, and some of the puzzles are not short. a lot of the times to complete a single level, you need an incredibly amount of patience to do things because you either have to be very careful when you do things or wait things out.

You might wonder then, why am I recommending this? Well, because I understand that just because a product isn't for me, it does not mean that others might not enjoy it. If you're into incredibly hard puzzle games and are a masochist for pain, then get the game. I am not, and I have too many games in my library that I have to play, therefore I'm officially dropping this game. I gave it a fair shot and I really tried! I was so close to beating it (I needed 2 more levels), but I just cant do it anymore. I'm done.
