I really hate to give this game a bad review and I like most things about this game except the damn pirate battles. They are so un-fun its actually insane. Spent the last 5 hours over my week playing one ironman campaign where i got further than i ever have before. I was really enjoying the game.
The first pirate battle i decide to do (After every single one of my previous campaigns has ended via pirate battles) and all the pirates target me and every hit is like 20 health and i die in one round and the campaign is over. Now I just dont think i can play this game anymore, there is no skill, it is all RNG based. The whale fights are fine, everything else is really fun but that just ruins the game for me.

Nantucket is a good game that's carried by vibes and love from the creators. Combat is fine, but relatively simple, RNG dependent, and unbalanced (2 of the 4 sailor types have downright useless abilities). Trading is nice, crew management is nice, and the random events are fun. If you enjoyed reading Moby ♥♥♥♥, and you're not a hardcore lifelong video game player who cares deeply about gameplay design and balance, you'll probably enjoy this.
It has revolvers in the 1820s when they were invented in the late 1830s. This ruins the entire age of sail ethos. Also it has encounters you can't escape from for no reason without communicating it to you. And has unethamtic things like a plot point saying that a leader of three castaways shoots two but then in the fight you still fight 3 castaways. also you can't circumnavigate the world despite this taking place in the 1820s. Simply not designed well. I love the setting but this maker doesn't have respect for the setting or the medium. good songs and art though.

The general gameplay loop is boring. There's a lot of dead air moving from place to place, so much so I actually took out my phone during this. Sometimes you get an event to break up the pace which come in two flavors; a combat encounter and an event with mild consequences. The former is pretty bland. Combat is entirely based on RNG and you don't have any means to really manipulate it beyond out stat checking failures. You can get unique skills when you level up but since your ability to use them is inconsistent they're usually not that useful and the thought process in battle is usually going after whoever you can one shot in one turn. The game is transparent on the actions your enemy takes so sometimes you *might* decide to target someone else if you can tell they're going for the dodge, but man the numbers are so often on your side it doesn't matter. It's either that or you get rng screwed.
The choices are repetitive with the common dichotomy being either you don't want to hurt your crew's morale or have your crewmates adopt negative traits. The issue here is that morale is such an after thought, it's far too easy to keep it high through various perks and just maintaining resource stability. The consequences of having it low is also negligible, in all my time playing I can't remember it having any major influence on how it affected my play. So any time these choices pop up there's little reason to not go for the choices that give you benefits while causing a slight decrease in morale. Other times you get choices based on needing to dispose of resources but what you're forced to sacrifice is so miniscule it never deters your current path or forces you to play differently, even in the early game. Sometimes the decision is a bit more complex than this but in every case the most optimal and beneficial decision is so obvious that you're never given incentive to not go for that choice, which makes this system shallow and actually a bit aggravating given how frequently it pops up.
As an ironman game I just do not think it's fun. It’s too easy to get to a point where you stabilize your resources and any drawbacks you get through poor luck or bad decisions is easy to negate through just going to the nearest port and hiring a new crewmate. This only makes the game more tedious because it means you have to build up more crewmates again and the decision making is far too obvious and easy. There's not enough individuality on any sailor to make losing them a problem and you also such a small crew size that replacing them is a trivial cost. The most flexibility an iron man run demands of you is entirely just patience, and even in those conditions it's too easy to snowball anyway. At best it may make you more wary of risky decisions early game but I don't exactly think that choosing not to engage with its gameplay is a more exciting alternative.
You never have to pay attention to the map and anything that slows you do only serves to slow down the pace of its gameplay loop. Rarely are resources ever a problem given how tightly connected the trade docks are and how events barely hurt you. There's no incentive to explore the darkened out sections of the map as there’s nothing to actually discover in them. You may have some areas that you can stop and fish for, but why bother when the quests and upgrades give you incentive to move around anyway and are more rewarding?
Your incentive of going anywhere on the map comes down to two things - quests and upgrades. I think these compliment each other well as you need to go between ports to get new upgrades and complete quests so there's never a reason to not be moving. But the thing is every region is functionally the same aside from not having specific functions (shipbuilding, quests, etc), they may have differing prices on occasion but since the game expects you to be moving all the time for other things you never have any reason to think about the optimal routing for pricing. It's also so blandly devoid of politics, this era of maritime venturing was full of competitive cutthroat policies by competing governments but yet every region is functionally neutral to each other? The game gives you a sense of time passing and the newspaper depicting real historical events is novel but it loses its luster because why does any of that ever matter to you? The "challenge" expansion opens up the map of the entire world but all this does is add two new ports and more tedium. This is especially insulting considering they could have expanded the cultural framing so much here. I get there's a need to balance ports and requiring some level of distance between them but even then why not have ports in southern Arabia, east Africa, or somewhere in western North America? It gets worse how the port in the British Raj only gives you British sailors despite British people being a minority there and also just disregarding how important the existence of Lascars were in this era. What is the point of this expansion if we're not exploring more cultural niches? At best you have a few other ships doing quests and what not but the framing for them being rivals is non-existant and they don't do much to change your game plan anyway.
The narrative is basically a chopped down version of Moby ♥♥♥♥ without really capturing the nuances of it. The narrative is so devoid of personality, it feels like I'm reading a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ abridged version of the sparknotes article on Moby ♥♥♥♥. I think its visual style is fine enough, but it feels like everything is blandly written and pragmatically conveyed that it lacks any real personality to make you care about anything. Even the occasional cutscenes feel like a nothing burger, just two sentences and admittedly cool looking drawing to reiterate what you just did in the narrative. The main campaign does at least give incentive to create specific unique scenarios that spice up its gameplay on occassion but never once do they force you to play any differently than how you usually do with the sole exception being the final boss.
The penultimate battle with Moby ♥♥♥♥ is some of the dumbest ♥♥♥♥ I’ve ever experienced in a game. In order to even hurt him you have to equip an item that removes status effects on an enemy. This is all fine and dandy, but the caveat here is whether or not you can trigger that item skill is entirely rng. The boss could wipe your entire crew before you get the chance and it makes the entire boss such an obnoxious pursuit of replaying it until you get lucky, and god forbid the crewmate who has the item dies in the process because then you have to wait until he kills your whole crew before you can try again. Also hope that when the boss submerges to regain his invulnerability you can use the spear again if you're lucky! It doesn't take too long to get lucky enough to win this fight but it's so funny that they needed such a dumb mechanic reliant on RNG to even present a barrier to you, which to me is an indictment of how shallow this game is.
If you want a 19th century sailing sim there's so many better titles you could pick up other than this. Literally just play the Uncharted Waters series and you'll have more enjoyment out of that than this. Hell, even Sid Meier's Pirates, which I'm also critical of, has far more going on with it than what this game does. I think this sticks out for having a unique vibe and aesthetic but it just does everything so poorly and blandly I can't recommend this to anyone.
I enjoyed the opening hours of the game but thats all. The tutorial basically shows the whole combat in game. I like the whole setting idea but it could have been more flashed out.
I really wish there was a "mixed" option. On the one hand, the game is quite enjoyable at times and generally quite fun. However there are moments that are both frustrating and just feel like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Nontheless I'm recommending it. But I feel I must point out two important things. The RNG feels absolutely *nothing* like RNG and more like the game has a set of weights, which often just decide whether you win a fight or not in the first 2 rounds (eg, you can't do anything cause you keep rolling blanks/can't roll any damage dice) Similarly, the enemies *always* get an action, but you can sometimes roll a complete lack of one, which feels both unfair and oftentimes unwinnable.
Overall, good game, but frustrating to the extreme and generally feels quite unfair and RNG can screw you *far* too easily.

I'm surprised this game isn't more popular and better reviewed. It seems that most of what upsets people is the combat. Yes, in the beginning of the game, you have to get fairly lucky. However, by the time you have a ship that supports 3 whaleboats, enough prestige to hire skilled crew, and an understanding of the combat system, there's essentially no challenge at all, and you only need to not have extremely bad luck. My biggest advice to new players is to look at everything. Every icon you can hover over and read a description from or click on, do it. If you're still struggling, use the help button to get more information about the game mechanics. Also, don't go into an event that involves combat unless you're prepared, e.g., a whale infamous enough to be named or a pirate fight is not going to be easy if you're struggling to survive non-named whales that aren't even fully grown. Oh, and pay attention to traits. Some of them are extremely helpful. Btw, you can surrender fights as long as you do it before you die, lol (the current turn will still play out, so think ahead).
The game isn't perfect, but the story is definitely worth a playthrough, and the music is also worth listening to. I think the game is fairly reasonably priced and is a gem when on sale. My issues with the game are that the Ghost Bride events seem excessively rare, the challenge mode sort of gets repetitive really quickly, especially when playing long challenge modes because there just aren't enough interesting, unique events going on, there are a few bugs/crashes (nothing truly annoying, though), and it's a bit depressing to kill imaginary whales once you're strong because it's just so easy (in the beginning, you're just angry at the whales because they keep killing you, lol).
There are a few things about this game that I find quite fun, authentic, and charming. That said, there's too much luck involved during battles. Too much randomness, caused by the use of dice (uncontrolled randomness with independent events) instead of, for example, cards (controlled randomness with variable probabilities due to dependent events).
Would not recommend for Linux users. Native does not seem to work even tho it says it does, and using it with proton used to work according to some users but no longer seems to. I'll keep troubleshooting and I'll be happy to update this if I can get it working - or at least write a proper review once I get a chance to play it on my partner's windows machine but as it stands right now consider this a warning if you use Linux and are considering purchasing this game.
Theres a lot to like about this game, story, visual style, exploration and character progression. However, all of that gets thrown in the trash by the poorly-designed, b&llsh*t RNG combat. EVERYTHING about the combat is designed as a big FU to players.

*Every enemy attacks each turn while only 1 of your crew can attack in a turn (I only had 1 dingy so maybe that changes when you have larger ship, but I never got there)
*Every enemy attack causes bleeding, which becomes insurmountable very quickly
The final kicker for me was a completely unsurvivable storyline mission where my captain got locked into a combat slot with infinite sharks and had to survive 8 turns of attacks and bleeding damage and the game didn't let you retreat.
Honestly wish I could reach through the screen and punch the developers.
Nantucket is an indie strategy game about managing a whaling ship and chasing after the legendary whale Moby Dyck (yes I know it's a typo, Steam censorship is doing wonders here).
It is the beginning of the 19th century, widely considered as the golden age of whaling. You are the sole survivor of The Pequod, a ship that hunted for Moby Dyck under captain Ahab's command and suffered a terrible demise. Having sworn to chase Moby Dyck for the rest of your days, you start again with a new ship and a fresh crew, following in Ahab's footsteps.
The gameplay in Nantucket consist of sailing the globe while hunting whales (and sometimes pirates), trading materials and completing quests that you can pick up in various ports. You can also hire crewmembers, upgrade your ship or read about the current events in the world by reading newspaper. Your crew will consist of different classes, from cabin boys to sailors and harpooners. Each crewmember has different talents and abilities that you can use, whether it's a combat ability or a passive ability granting him some kind of bonus (like bonus to sailing speed when he's assigned to the helm). When your ship encounters a whale, you engage in combat with a whaleboat. A whaleboat can take up to three of your crew, allowing you to strategically combine their abilities. Once you get a bigger ship, you can have more than one whaleboat. The combat itself is turn-based and more or less straightforward, you'll get the hang of it immediately. Actually, the whole game is pretty simple when I think about it, you'll learn everything the game has to offer in about half an hour.
Nantucket has a strong atmosphere and is very fun to play for the first several hours. However, it doesn't really feature much content and you can easily complete the main quest in under 10 hours. I'm a little disappointed with a low number of different quests, whale types, ship upgrades and content in general. The graphics are nice but I wish there was a scaling option for higher resolutions. The music score is great, hosting a couple of fitting background tunes as well as several high-quality shanties that I can't seem to get out of my head. Overall, despite the Nantucket's relative shallowness, I can honestly say that I rather enjoyed it.
Nantucket is a brief breath of fresh air. It’s a simple game with a distinct atmosphere that's perfect when you feel like you've got nothing to play.

A fun, yet fairly difficult game, about managing your crew as you grow a whaling ship to conquer Moby ♥♥♥♥. The combat has a high-ish difficulty floor, as the player has to become very used to having a very low action economy compared to their enemies.
The nice artstyle and shanties in the background make for a very fun experience.
The game plays like map and resource section of Mount and Blade, so incredibly fun if you are into that style of game.

Nantucket is such a cute game that does an amazing job of enveloping you into their world. Every piece of this game feels like a stylized artpiece. The sea shanties that play periodically while you sail add a level of charm and atmosphere that ties the whole package together. I could not recommend this game enough, and if you're still on the fence its supporting a small dev for less than $20

FIDELIO MÓWI: Yo Ho Harties, jak podśpiewywał sobie kiedyś pewien Jack Sparrow. Nantucket to wyborny pomysł na powrót do klimatu Sid Meier's Pirates. Ten oceaniczny klimat - nigdzie nie znajdziecie takiego klimatu jak w tej grze. Niestety nie ma tu piratów, bo... tu gramy w erze, gdy złota era piractwa już minęła, za to zaczęła się era wielorybników i czasy słynnego Moby Dicka.

Me lo he pasado ya dos veces , y es de los mejores juegos de estrategia que he jugado. La temática es única(Creo que es el único que toca el tema de cazar ballenas como mecánica central) y las opciones de personalización(tanto de los marineros como del barco) están muy bien. Lo único malo que le veo es que en la parte final del juego el único reto que nos queda es el jefe final, ya que las misiones secundarias se vuelven demasiado fáciles y tenemos dinero de sobra para tener todo lo que queramos, pero gracias a que el juego es relativamente corto(en menos de 10 horas puedes completar todas las misiones importantes) no es problema. En general, esta de lujo, sobretodo si lo pillas en rebajas.
Before I had gotten distracted by another game I was fairly addicted to calmly hunting whales, buying, selling, and taking care of my crew.
I played this years ago and i still think about it from time to time. A very unique experience that doesn't take too long to complete. Definitely worth $5.

"Nantucket" é uma mistura de RPG com um pouco de administração. O jogo é baseado na história de Moby D.1ck, então toda história gira em torno de você ser um caçador de baleias numa jornada pessoal de vingança contra a baleia assassina mais conhecida da literatura.
Neste jogo, você tem duas frentes: a primeira são os combates, que são por turno e onde você enfrenta todo tipo de baleias. O sistema de combate é realmente simples, seus marinheiros vão ter classes e dentro dessas classes eles tem sub-classes que definem as skills que eles possuem. Neste jogo a morte é definitiva, então se algum de seus marinheiros morrer você vai perder o boneco pra sempre (quem disse que é fácil a vida no mar?).
A segunda frente do jogo é a mecânica, que também não é complexa, de administrar seu barco. Na medida em que você faz suas caçadas, você vende a carne, a gordura e o óleo das baleias nos portos espalhados pelo globo - sim, você navega pelo mundo, tem até o porto de IMBITUBA. Aos poucos você vai dando upgrades no seu barco, então uma parcela do jogo gira em torno de ficar indo e vindo pelos oceanos caçando baleias e farmando XP e dinheiro. Você também vai recrutando marinheiros nos portos pelo mundo, você pode pegar eles já especializados ou treinar um marinheiro do 0 e buildar ele como você acha mais pertinente pra sua equipe. Alguns deles desbloqueiam upgrades específicos pro seu barco e são cruciais de se ter. Dependendo da classe deles, eles também vão buffar tarefas do navio (ex: o cozinheiro deixa a moral do grupo mais alta, o observador aumenta a visão do barco etc).
Eu recomendo esse jogo. Ele tem uma arte feita a mão bem bonita e é um game bem relaxante, do tipo que você liga e vai jogando sem se estressar enquanto explora o oceano e melhora seu navio. Ele também é curto e depois que você termina ele não tem muito incentivo pra re-jogar a não ser ter curtido a gameplay.

Great game
The history of whaling and its role in the economy of 19th Century Atlantic countries is interesting, and this game does a very good job immersing the player in that world in many ways.
You'll captain a whaling ship, sailing in search of profit and adventure; make crew decisions, take special missions, occasionally stumble on some prey, then return to port and do some upgrading.
The real problem I've had with this game is that I cannot seem to get very good at playing it. There's a lot of grind to the whole thing, and even when I get lucky with some RNG, I still ultimately fail every campaign I start before I can really get too far into the story.
The battle mechanic is based on dice rolls, and at lower levels of crew, these battles are usually very dangerous to undertake. The punishment for errors is grave (watery grave, if you will), and I had a tendency to rage quit after losing a critically competent crewmember to a chance encounter with some sharks or some thing.
Art is actually very nice, hand-drawn aesthetic with a kind of classic card-game simulation feel to the game.
I don't regret playing this game at all, and the things that I really enjoyed about it (the art, the atmosphere, the historical elements) are well done -- but I can't objectively recommend the game unless you are specifically interested in 19th Century maritime.
The final boss battle against Mobydick ruined the experience for me. making an boss invincible is fine but allowing him to become invincible again makes it feel cheap and completely based on rng.
There are almost no whaling games out there but luckily Nantucket exists and is a great game. It can be rough at first especially when you get tag teamed by whales who stun every attack but once you find your stride everything starts to come together. It's also fun the whole time even when you're being mollywhopped by a group of whales or sharks.
If I have one complaint it's that the game takes just a little too long when turns are being played out and you can't increase the speed of the messages.
The tutorial teaches you the game and is short but it really takes your hand and drags you through it without giving you a moments pause. It's effective tho and teaches you enough to play but leaves you to figure things out.
Also real world knowledge of whaling in New England has been useful in finding whaling spots.

You are a guy who wants to kill Moby ♥♥♥♥. In order to do that, you need to hire a crew, gather money to buy resources and ships, have countless of adventures until you trace the big white and have the power to put a bullet in his eye.

You can be a Hunter ( which will further specialize in Harpooner - hunting whales or a Fighter - fighting pirates and other enemies), Sailor ( various sailing bonuses and some skills helpful to prevent larger whales from capsizing your boats for example) Craftsman ( cook and can also reroll dices) and Scientist which is the defacto healer.
Furthermore, every man of your crew can have any of the jobs above, and you can also hire cabin boys which doesn't cost resources and can be promoted in any way you want, but it takes longer to level up.

You buy resources and hire your crew and then you travel the world between various ports, hunt whales, kill pirates, avoid various natural hazards, do quests, sell the blubber, oil and whale meat for a profit, rinse and repeat until you advance through the story long enough and have enough resources to take down Dicky Moe! You have various whale types to hunt, with different skills, drops, hunting locations and migration patterns. You also have a morale system and other small neat features, which most of the time not game changeing, they are fun and can be used for some variety in game.

You can improve your ship with various upgrades and also buy bigger ships with more whaling boats.
One problem i see here is that your crew needs to have certain skills in order to buy a bigger ship and you having limited crew space means you need to fire men and hire other man in order to buy the ship. That is frustrating especially if you raised a cabin boy and now you need to fire it because it doesn't have the needed skills.
[i] Difficulty and Role Play [/i]
In the beginning and until you understand the mechanics the game can be hard and unforgiving. After you buy your second ship, which has 2 boats, therefore more firepower and a bigger hold you will start to make a big profit and the game starts being too easy ( like many games do). The trick here might be to roleplay a bit and make it harder. You can hire a weaker crew, stop farming whales and just hunt if you encounter one, choose weaker skills and roles. I am doing this in my current playthrough and it's loads of fun, feels quite realistic, always wondering if you will have enough money to buy food or if the next encounter will be your last.
That doesn't mean danger is not present at every step, fighting enemies is dice based, so there is a big amount a chance involve. One tale smack from a bigger whale while you had bad dice rolls and your game can be , well, game over.
The final boss, Moby ♥♥♥♥, or Dicky Moe how i like to call it , Tom and Jerry reference :P is quite a lot more difficult than normal whales, but with a bit of researching and strategy you can take it down.
Like i said in the TLDR, game is fun and you can easily sink 50-100 hours into it. Have fun!

Game is fun, but the UI could really use some improvements. Especially in combat, there are too many times where you are "stuck" not being able to do anything while the other side is "acting", and even access to the menu is blocked. You can't even quit the game in those situations.

As abhorrent as whaling is, this game (based loosely on Herman Melville's famous tale) shares the perils and misfortunes of such historic endeavours along with the fleeting success of the same. The tutorial in the game is a must for new players, as it gives quite a good introduction to the game mechanics. The game itself, once embarked upon, includes random and not so random encounters. With each encounter, the chances of your choices are fully displayed giving the player at least the odds for making an informed decision. But just as with any life choice (including level up options and skill point assignments) once you've made your decision, there's no going back (unless you saved of course). 4 out of 5 stars (with one star withheld for the subject matter).

Bon si vous rechignez à massacrer du cétacés tout en vous goinfrant de tartines à la mirabelle derrière votre écran, passez votre chemin mais sinon foncez et allez zigouiller ce meudit cachalot avec une bonne liqueur de coing !!!!

I admit that I am not a big fan of strategy games, but after playing about an hour of Nantucket, I was able to completely immerse myself in the game world, being captivated by the fantastic visuals, really well-directed dialogue, and random events that make this game unique.
The game mechanics are fairly straightforward, perhaps I can only recommend explaining some of the combat points better, but after a while I was able to get by just fine anyway.
There are very few games I have played that have been able to convince me by their charm of setting and ability to "pull you in."
Highly recommended to everyone, lovers of the genre and not!

En Nantucket somos el capitán de un barco cazador de ballenas, con el objetivo final de matar a Moby ♥♥♥♥. Es un juego de gestión y combate por turnos, tenemos que mejorar nuestro barco, reclutar una tripulación, subir de nivel, etc.
Recomiendo el juego, aunque tiene varios puntos en contra que no me gustan.
Por un lado, todo lo bueno.
La estética es buenísima, hermoso apartado visual y sonoro. Funciona todo muy bien. La mayor parte del juego estamos viendo el mapa del mundo, por el que navegamos con nuestro barco, y los menúes de un juego de gestión. Todo se ve muy bien. En los combates también, todo es muy simplista pero funciona genial.
El combate es entretenido, muy sencillo, pero se hace llevadero. Cada uno de nuestros personajes tiene un dado (6 caras) y cada turno tiramos el dado y usamos la habilidad que nos sale, si es que nos sale alguna. No se puede personalizar demasiado el dado, podría haberse expandido mucho más el sistema. Como tenemos distintas clases, tenemos distintos dados, además de algunos objetos equipables o habilidades desbloqueables que modifican alguna cara del dado, poco más.
El comienzo del juego es muy entretenido, vamos mejorando poco a poco nuestro barco, cazando ballenas, tomando quest secundarias para juntar dinero y ganar reputación, entre otras cosas.
Ahora, las cosas que no me gustaron del todo.
El juego completo me lo pasé en 10 o 12 horas, aproximadamente. Tuve que reiniciar algunas veces por haber muerto (puede o no habilitarse para jugar con permadeath). La duración del juego me pareció hasta larga, ya llegando al final del juego, porque se torna un poco repetitivo. Solo hay 4 o 5 tipos de misiones secundarias, y las misiones principales son ir de acá para allá, pelear, pasar diálogos breves, etc. El encanto que tiene el juego al principio se va bastante rápido, en mi opinión. Termina haciéndose pesado de terminar.
Creo que lo peor del juego, y lo que hace que termine siendo bastante aburrido sobre el final, es que la curva de dificultad no funciona bien, y hay muchas opciones/mejoras que podemos comprar que en el realidad no tienen ningún interés y no sirven para nada. Por ejemplo, podemos adquirir cañones para nuestro barco (primero tenemos que comprar un barco más grande) y mejorarlos de nivel 1 al 5. Ahora, nunca usé los cañones. Apenas sirven si te encontrás piratas en el mar, cosa que en realidad puede no ocurrir nunca porque hay zonas señalizadas de piratas que podés ignorar y ya está. Como este ejemplo, hay varias cosas más. Los "safe docks", que te permiten anclar en la orilla y juntar recursos en situación de escases, tampoco sirven de nada, porque hay muchos puertos donde comprar recursos a lo largo del mapa, y tenés espacio de sobra en el barco para stockear.
Al final, terminé teniendo una fortuna de dinero, sin mejoras que sirvan para prácticamente nada, solamente pasando de misión en misión. Creo que esto es lo que el juego no tiene bien implementado a fin de cuentas.
Las zonas para cazar ballenas, creo que tampoco. Básicamente farmeando ballenas por un rato, podés juntar suficiente dinero como para que todas las misiones secundarias se vuelvan inútiles, es una mecánica que está demasiado rota.
En definitiva, recomiendo Nantucket a pesar de las cosas negativas (ni idea tema precio y esas cosas, lo recomiendo como juego). El comienzo es muy entretenido, las mecánicas de combate y exploración al menos al principio están bien, el apartado artístico es buenísimo :)

Very addictive game with good concept and soundtrack. Reported a bug before and dev promptly response to fix it. Love how this old game still alive.
So everything was going fine, almost had enough money for a new ship, and then i came along a super whale wich i couldn't retreat out of, so after 2 hours of gaming, i just randomly died and everything was for nothing. I realy love the idea of the game, but just the random death is so demotivating after investing so much time, that i want my money back.

Nice game. Finished it once but it has some isues:
* Combat is a complete chaos at the start of the game and more aprochable at the end. This is not how the game should be. Encounters ought to be easy at start and then difficult and the end.
* First plot mission is top tier insane. The game basically discorage you to take it unless you have progresed to tier 2 or 3 ship or have incredible amount of luck.
* When you encounter an event you cant quit or load the game. I realise that is was implemented so the player cant re-roll unlucky fight and avoid painfull consequences... but there are fights that you have no chance to win unless you meet special conditions AND if you by accident get to close to event that you know you cant complete it will trigger anyway and you will have to waste few minutes to procede, fight, lose, and then finally load. Total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
* To much randomness. Combat is based on one action by boat and random roll of die so there is no much strategy at least at the begining. The line of sight of the ship is to low so you cant see waht is happeninng abound you. Instead of making interesting decisions there is a lot of "gotch ya" moments when something happends and you have to roll with it event if it in not your fault.
The rest of the game is quite enjoyable. Nice music, good grafics, interesting concept. But due to poory designed gameplay Nantucket is not a good game

Biraz prosedürel seçeneklere bağlı neticeler sunan, savaşları sıra tabanlı olan ve kaynak yönetimini önde tutan güzel bir oyun. Sıkılmayacağınızdan eminim. Balina avına çıkarak para kazanacak, mürettebatınızı geliştirecek ve zamanla geminizi büyüteceksiniz. E daha ne olsun.

At any moment an event occurs that destroys your team or ship. And there is no way to prepare for it. You have to load autosaves. Over and over.

I love the game but the combat is so gimicky, unfair, and feels so obviously stacked against you that it becomes infuriating. I couldnt imagine playing on permadeath, because 90% of encounters result in permastuns and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ rolls when you arent. like seriously its so close to perfect but the combat is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
If you enjoy losing randomly , you will love this game. If you want to learn a system that is hard satisfying and complex. Look elsewhere. Even when you use all of the classes as intended, you make the game a waiting sim

[list][*]Combat is incredibly random.
Especially boarding combat - there was more than one case where combat started, the enemies decided whom to attack, and I could just have pressed alt + F4. All three pirates attacked my captain (captain presence forced by story, and captain's death = game over), two attacks are enough are enough to kill a max-level character (+50% damage in the first turn, yey). Only ways to prevent an attack or avoid damage in boarding combat are killing the attacker (which tends to take three attacks by hunters, because you don't get +50% on the first turn), or a special ability by a hunter specialising in boarding combat (1/6 chance to trigger...). So basically, unless you have at least one guy specialised on fighting humans, you have a 1/8 chance of going from "game over", to "game over, but at least you killed one of them".
Or against the same enemies two could've decided to take cover, and one attacked. Then you roll that 1/8 chance for all your hunters to get an attack and you didn't even take damage the first turn, and the enemies don't get to make use of their +50% damage in the first round. Or, better yet, you could've gotten a random event, and ended up with one enemy dead and one bleeding.
It's not [i]as[/i] bad with whaling ships, but you still better sacrifice a virgin whale to RNGesus.
(Side-note: Enemies scale with your progress in some way; coming back later for a story-mission fight still helps, but mostly because 1/10 crew members specialising on boarding combat hurts less than 1/3)

[*]There's a "menu" button during combat, but I can't say it works. Opens a "menu" that allows upening the settings, or resuming. Can't save, can't load, can't quit to main menu, and can't close the game entirely from there either. And even that is blocked while a turn is in progress.
[*]Alt-tabbing causes weird [Steam's lovely hearts]. Appears to consider any click a click + hold after that, until entering or leaving a harbour.
[*]Turns are slow. [i]Everything[/i] that happens takes half a second or so to display - this turn's special effect, this turn's special effect moving to the top-right, enemy deciding action, next enemy deciding action, "those crew members are stunned/overboard, die/dice won't be rolled", rolling the dice that can be rolled, attack, damage dealt, enemy died, bleeding resisted (yes, I've seen it in that order)... it all takes longer than it would have to.
[*]If you want a bigger ship, you have to improve compartments that you can only research if you have a skill. Which means that 2/3 of your crew (you can make up for it, but then you need to invest points into it...) need to take a path that won't really be usefull to you yet, if going from small to medium (medium -> large is 2/6). Unless you just fire the relevant crewmember (or let him die) after researching the compartment.
I really don't see much of a reason why it is that way. Just let me buy the ship and run it at partial capacity (like a medium ship that can't refine blubber into oil) until I have the relevant crew, then I don't have to fire the guys who've been with me since forever and have great perks thanks to all the events.[/list]
Great, if a little underdeveloped game. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes too easy however. Until then it's quite fun. Had entertaining 15 hours with it, worth the price imo.
Beating Moby ♥♥♥♥ is broken. Oh and btw, beore anything bad happens on ironman, just cntrol alt delete to avoid having to restart.
At normal asking price of 18 beans the game is worth it. I got over 40 hours on this thing and still play it sometimes. On sale for 5 right now. This game is unique and interesting. It's certainly well built. On a windows PC it's never crashed or bugged at all. But I also just like the game. These guys came up w/ a good concept and built it just right. Kudos.

Balleneros persiguiendo a Moby ♥♥♥♥, gran tema con estupenda implementacion, la banda sonora incluye sea shanties de un grupo ingles llamado roaring trowmen (son las canciones tipicas de marineros de la epoca). El juego consiste en ir cazando ballenas para ir mejorando barco y tripulacion mientras buscas pistas sobre Moby ♥♥♥♥. Las mecanicas son gestion de recursos y combate de cartas y dados, deckbuilding. No haces un mazo como tal sino que eliges que tripulantes llevas, en funcion del barco podemos llevar de 1 a tres botes con 3 marineros cada uno, esto serian las cartas, luego en funcion de cada marinero tiene unas tiradas de dado con mas o menos resultados de diferentes efectos. Muy recomendable si te gusta el tema, de momento no existe otro juego que lo trate.
I love this game. Once you get the feel for it, it's pretty engaging and fun. I've replayed it many times, and it stays enjoyable and challenging. If you like ships, or history, or the novel Moby ♥♥♥♥, you should have this. The DLC is worth it. I'd love to see more games of this type.
I thought this game was going to be real interesting to play given its aesthetics. Unfortunately, I can not recommend this game to anyone. The biggest problem is the battles. You just will not win unless you can get a bigger ship or more upgrades. The problem with that is that you can't even make any money to proceed to upper levels or bigger ships. And why is that? Well while you are out on quests you will either encounter wrong wind direction(red) right wind direction(green) but no wind to fill your sails which eats up all your supplies. I really feel as if the developer dropped the ball on this one.
