This game is good, but not as good as the first one (well except the DLC on the first one was even a bit more unfair than this most of the time although it allowed for even more crazily broken, but extremely fun combos sometimes).

While there's some fun, new aspects, a lot of the end-game modifications to runs (late game Covenants for players of the first game) and some of the more recently-introduced dimensional challenges on this game feels way more punishing and less forgiving due to a myriad of factors. Whether it be corruption givers, lots of spell shields/incant units on their side, double-strike huge sweep units, trials that are traps, things that hit your pyre directly if you don't have something on a floor, or randomly buffed enemies that you can't foresee that can completely destroy your run, the way you play the game feels much more limited and luck dependent. For example, even though there's now a deployment phase and you can place units "more freely", you feel much more constrained as you are much more forced to be on the first floor lest you get destroyed by the aforementioned effects. There's also even more questionable balance decisions that makes mastering all the cards much more frustrating.

If you do decide to play, make sure you pay attention to pre-fight descriptions and don't just go for all the trials necessarily as some will just kill your runs during the late game. However, a lot of these complaints only apply if you care about things like high-level streaks/mastering all the cards/winning "clean runs" (since they now track if you save scum/redo battles/turns) and such, especially when going for "true wins". It just feels way less in your control due to not knowing all the enemies that will come out when you place your units in the deployment phase and how much more important getting certain draws can be.

The first monster train was amazing. The second one does not disappoint. :)

It still gives reason to go back to play the first due to some mechanics, but the second is just so much fun.

They removed some limits from the first game and added a couple new ones. If you liked the first, you'll LOVE the second.
ALSO they added a story! Yes! I'm so pleased by this cause the story was always something I wondered about and craved to learn more about.

Also the new mode! Thank you! I love the new mode called "Soul Saver" where you go in with a few extra goodies by default. It adds a lot of game variety.

A personal favourite of mine. Most deckbuilding roguelikes are stingy with resourses but the monster train series gives a lot more freedom and opportunities for crazy combos. If you think other DBRLs are too slow and you're sick of taking one game action per turn then Monster Train 2 is for you.

I did not play the first Monster Train so I can only comment on this one.

The gameplay is very good IMO. The comparisons to Slay the Spire are inevitable and obvious so I'll get them out of the way first. Monster Train takes obvious inspiration from StS - but I would say is very, very much its own game with own identity.

The lower difficulty levels feel in a good place - I have not yet reached the higher ones. You can generally win with a pretty fat deck which I think is very important for these deckbuilders because new players need to learn the cards and the strategies first before they can start trying to trim down a hyper efficient deck via card removal. You need time to learn what works, what doesn't, the playstyles you like, etc. And the low difficulties here really allow for that.

Comparing this to StS2 (which, as of writing, is still in "early access") which seems to demand a very efficient deck for all characters even on the lowest difficulty.

In monster train you basically pick two factions (a main one and a sub faction). This determines what cards your card pool will consit of. And your main faction lets you pick a champion character which is a free deployable monster. They seem well varied and interesting enough to want to try them all.

I enjoy that at low difficulty mistakes aren't fatal, there is an undo button which I like, and you can even restart a battle with no penalty if you missed some key boss mechanic and made a bad mistake.

I also like how mechanically diverse all the factions are. It does seem like there's a lot of fun variety and cool tricks to try with them all - and the game seems to really want you to make creative combinations.

I haven't played enough to truly determine the balance of the game. In my limited experience it seems "okay". So far most builds seem to work well enough to win at low difficulty but some very strong options are so easy to pull off compared to others.

Eg, the angel faction has a guy that applies melee weakness on being hit to the enemies (this means for each stack the enemy takes 100% more damage). Just upgrading it as some huge HP sink and getting a good equipment that also damages on being hit makes this guy absurdly strong and this is so easy to pull off you'll be almost guaranteed to get the pieces you need in a run. I haven't found something quite this strong and reliable for the other factions, but I'm trying to not fall into a rut.

In terms of the bad with the game most of it is at least superficial.

The artstyle is... uh... cheap? They're very obviously using a Spine based animation system (think of it like a traditional 3D skeleton but for 2D) and the animation look like something you would see in an online slot machine or something. It's not exactly bad looking, but it also does seem to

The character design is likewise questionable. It looks like something an aging millennial trying to feel young thinks teenagers would find cool and edgy. I will say that the artstyle, while definitely not for me, is at least cohesive. Everything does feel like it was made with the same overarching art direction.

Now the story... is not very good. It is blissfully brief and you can skip it. Further the cutscenes are anemic and devoid of production value. It's good the devs put most of their efforts into the core of the game but also I really don't feel this adds anything to the game.

Finally the music - and I grant this is exceptionally subjective - IMO it's both great and kind of mediocre but the weird part is it won't be like some songs are good and others are bad - but the same songs have awesome parts then kind of boring parts in them. The game's theme is angels and demons joining up to defeat titans, so I think the with music direction the idea was to combine heavy rock and sort of "heavenly" harmonic sections or whatever but in practice the music just makes sort of weird switch ups that don't really work for me sometimes. This is not really an issue at all I just wanted to note it.

All in all, for me, the mechanical gameplay of the game outshines any and all of its visual shortcomings or other criticisms I have. It's just fun.

以前から気になっていた作品です。
このたびのセールで思い切って購入してみました。

カードゲームはスレスパくらいしか遊んでいないですが、数回の周回で少しずつ理解できるようになりました。
とにかく音楽が　””かーーーっこいい””　これに尽きるね。
カードゲームにしてはちょっと落ち着きが無さすぎるのでは…？と最初思ったんですが
実際に遊んでいると謎の高揚感に包まれるというか、没入感に浸れます。
この感覚はスレスパとはまた違ったところですね。

タワーディフェンス要素もあるので、他カードゲームをお持ちの方でも新鮮な気持ちで遊べると思います。
難易度は現在６時間程遊んだ感じでは丁度良い塩梅。

負けてもまたやったるぜー！ってなるのはやはり音楽を聴きたくなるからですかねー？ホント良き。

For anyone who likes this type of game I can only very strongly recommend it!!

I have played this game for 880 hours and did never get bored of it!! This is also by far the most amount of time I have ever played any game in my entire life.
The quality of the game is in my personal opinion extremely high, the mechanics, the gameplay.
I also like the art a lot. For me it has exactly the perfect balance for a deckbuilder/card-battler game between RNG and planning, so you can build up your strategy but don't always get exactly what you need.
The DLCs they released until now also had so much content and there was also free content you didn't even have to buy, though I my opinion the game and DLCs are absolutely worth every penny.

I actually like this game.
It has tons of content, great deck building options and many synergies, the gameplay loop is unique in the deck builder sphere, the graphics are serviceable and the music has a number of great tracks in it.

However!
It's always not fun when your build is just hard countered by an encounter and there's nothing you can do or could have done differently.
Didn't find a monster with cleave, or a way to put it on a monster? Great, here's a boss that will send 3 ads with cleave your way that just ruin your heavy hitters, or enough mobs that don't care about your puny 3 attacks per floor.
Running magic? Didn't find mute? Here's an encounter with mobs exclusively running magic shield that laugh at your magic nukes. Or sending a boss that has incant that will then proceed to 1 shot your army.

This has been a problem in MT1 DLC already and it has gotten much worse in MT2 and is the sole reason I never really got deep into the game, and I can't really recommend it to anyone outside of the more hardcore card / deck builders. It's not fun when you have a great running build and then it just runs flat into a wall because you either forgot or didn't find that 1 thing that gives you a slight chance against those hard counters.

Best rogue-like deck builder since Slay the Spire. The sheer magnitude of potential deck combinations that exist in this game are absurd. While there are some fundamentally OP deck combos for each "hero", the game provides a good balance of rock/paper/scissors to keep you from sticking to the same strategy.

- Баланс. Часто є відчуття, що ти зламав гру своїм білдом. Але насправді це відбувається кожну другу катку, і без цього часто ніяк. В грі більше 500 різних карт, і з них може з десяток це сміття, яке ніколи не треба брати. Гра при тому не легка, особливо на високих рівнях складності.
- Синергії. Є дуже багато неочевидних та цікавих взаємодій між різними механіками. Можна награти під 1к годин і досі знаходити нові робочі білди.
- Кількість контенту. Сіквел подвоїв кількість контенту першого Monster Train, який в свою чергу був величенькою гру.

Якщо грали в першу гру і вона вам зайшла, то це один з найкращих сіквелів сучасності. Розробники не зламали нічого, що вже працювало, та додали достатньо нових механік.
Якщо полюбляєте карткові роуглайки, то цей просто не можна пропускати.
Якщо не пробували карткові роуглайки, то подумайте над тим щоб спробувати. Перша частина була моїм першим заходом в цей жанр, і див. кількість годин в сіквелі.

Monster Train was one of my favorite games of all time and easily my favorite game in the roguelite and deckbuilding genres. Monster Train 2 improves upon the original in every single way, including fixing the balance of the original game's cards. I am still shocked by how thoroughly they improved such an already great game. If I meet a person that likes deckbuilding video/board games, I immediately ask them whether they've played this game. I've never had someone report back anything other than getting immediately addicted. Amazing game that I can't recommend enough.

Better in almost every way than the original game. [i]Almost.[/i] I actually recommend playing Monster Train 1 first. It's simpler, but that also makes it easier to get into. The sequel throws a lot at you at once, and I felt overwhelmed even as someone who played a lot of Monster Train 1.

If you have already played Monster Train 1, great, get this one, easy recommendation. It's like Monster Train++. If you have not played Monster Train 1, go back and play it. It's still one of the best deckbuilders ever made. Just hold off on the DLC content for at least a bit.

对于个人而言二代对比一代提升有质的飞跃，画面占小部分，主要一代大的玩法只记得有每日和凹难度，当时通关三遍就腻了，而二代多了位面挑战，这个多了特别多玩法，目前是打了40关解锁了车厢皮肤后就没玩了，但很多角色的搭配和牌组搭配都不是很懂，所以愿意肝的情况下实际游戏寿命还能翻倍，一代角色全部都能用且道具有了装备，可以自定义玩法，随便通关一把都接近一小时，很杀时间也挺爽游

总体感觉要比杀戮尖塔要更动脑，因为刚玩完新作，五角色n10全过完了，对比之下杀2玩60小时基本流派就全熟悉可以适当无脑了，而怪物火车2玩了100小时还有些一知半解，耐玩性肯定是怪物火车2，虽然后续杀2还会更新，但他的玩法是凹难度和联机，这点是真的容易腻，能给我玩下去的点只有最高难度打速通和联机，喜欢挑战性打连胜联机的推荐杀2，喜欢玩法多样化不牢的推荐怪物火车2（除了位面个别高难度其他都爽）
