A new RPG from veteran studio Aquaplus, commemorating 20 years of the multi-media Utawarerumono series. This is the story of a man who will be sung about in legends.
Ennakamuy, a vassal state of Yamato located in the outlands is home to a young man who lives with his mother and little sister. One day, while this man is investigating a minor matter at the behest of the Owlo (Emperor), he encounters a mysterious girl. She tells him something unbelievable - that his father, thought to be dead, is actually still very much alive. In search of the truth, he decides to leave his village and head for Arva Shulan, a mysterious country that does not exist on any maps. He surpasses one obstacle after another to retrace his father's footsteps. Along the way, he meets up with like-minded companions, going through hardships, happiness, setbacks, and painful separations together. As fate would have it, the man finds himself being slowly swept into the middle of a critical turning point in history. This is the story of a man who later becomes "Utawarerumono" - those who are lauded.

『偽りの仮面』の前日談を描いた作品。
一応単品でも遊べないことはないだろうが、シリーズに共通する物語の根幹部分をあっさりとネタバラシしている点や、かと思えば説明が不足している点などもあり、本作を起点にシリーズに触れるのはあまりオススメしない。
肝はなんといっても物語にあるのだが、RPGとしては率直に言ってあまり褒められる出来ではない。
本作は大まかに「メインシナリオが進行するイベント」と「シナリオを補足（各キャラとの関わりを描くなど）するサブイベント」の2つで構成されているが、他作品にない特徴として「サブイベントも全て消化しなければメインイベントが発生しない」という仕組みになっている。
よって度々サブイベントのために東奔西走させられることになるが、これが「サブ」故に、事前にその目的地や予定について言及されることは一切ない。
幸いマップ上には目的地を示すマーカーが出るので迷うことはないのだが、「なぜそこに行かなければならないのか」は依然として迷子であり、疑問を押しのけて脈絡のない目的地へ向かうことを強いられる。
ノベルゲーにおいてはイベントが発生する時／場所へ場面転換するのがある程度は自然であったが、そのノウハウをそのままRPGに流用するとこうなってしまうのかという悪い見本になってしまっている。
さらには戦闘も大味。
行動順が分かりにくい、弱点や耐性の判別がダメージの大小でしか測れない、バフやデバフがほとんど機能しない、システムがボス有利など、バランスの悪さは枚挙に暇がない程だが、一番の問題は「レベル補正」にあると思う。
本作には彼我のレベル差を基準に、格上には与ダメや状態異常の発生率が低く、格下には高くなる補正が存在している。
これにより、敵よりレベルが低い内はどれだけ装備を整えた所で「レベル差」に殴られて太刀打ちが出来ない。単に装備を更新する以外にも「打ち直し」という強化システムもあるのだが、強力過ぎるレベル補正によって価値が薄まっているのも噛み合いが悪い。
それを救済するためか、レベルが低い相手であれば戦闘を介さずに経験値やアイテムを入手できるという、まさにレベリングのためのシステムが存在するのだが、一度物語の適正レベルより高くなるようにレベリングしまえばそこから先は出現する敵すべてが「スキップ対象」となり、特に意識せずとも適正レベルを突き放したまま物語を進めることができてしまう。
いろいろと粗は多い作品だが、「続編が登場するとあっては触れないわけにもいかない」と義務感に駆られた諸兄におかれては上記の脳筋レベリング作戦を是非ともオススメする。真面目に付き合えるほどこのゲームのシステムは奥が深くない。
ゲーム自体がオススメかどうかは判断に迷う所だが、シリーズファンなら（続編ありきにはなるが）損はしないだろう。
不知下一作被冠名传颂系列最终作，到底是噱头还是还是真正的系列终章，但总归令人感到唏嘘，继二白之后，又经历官网倒计时推出手游的闹剧，已经离开这系列很久了。
说回到这个游戏，各个方面都透露着简陋，但是静下心玩下去，还是个不错的jrpg，剧本水平也非常优秀。我不相信叶子社在续作结局能有什么好活，只是我依旧希望续作里本作乃至前两代的角色们，都能画上圆满的句号。
If you are a big fan of the Utawarerumono series, then you can consider this game. Should you be a newcomer to the series, you should avoid this game.
As a stand alone game, Monochrome Mobius is not good enough. It is a rather low budget JRPG and thus the graphical quality is mostly non existant. The story is also only mediocre and worthwile for those with pre-existing knowledge about the setting.
However, if you want to know more about the characters of Yamato, then the game could be intersting for you. It also goes to locations the previous games have never been to, giving a better picture of Yamato.
All in all, I was happy to have played it, but I can not recommend buying the game at full price. If you can get it at a sale for 50% off, it is an accaptable deal.
Tl;dr: Ok for Utawarerumono fans, but a no go for newcomers.

It's not perfect, but it's GREAT.
As someone who thoroughly enjoyed PotF, MoD and felt let down by MoT going overly shounen Monochrome Mobius has some rough edges but the characters are great and so are the shoutouts to other parts of the franchise.
Great game for fans of Utawarerumono! Its a very "different" game than its predecessors given that its both a prequel AND a genre switch (its a standard jrpg as opposed to a SRPG like Prelude, Deception, and Trust), but it retains a lot of the heart and characterization from the VN/SPRG! The ost is great, and the gameplay, while fairly basic, is very competent in my opinion! I love this game a lot! I platinumed it on Playstation and am currently doing a replay to prepare for its upcoming sequel this May!

Tecnicamente nulla di eccezionale.
Nel complesso un buon JRPG, nulla di fenomenale che non raggiunge il livello dell'eccezionale Futari no Hakuoro/Mask of truth, inteso dal punto di vista narrativo, ma nonostante questo si fa giocare con piacere.
N.B. il gioco è un prequel della trilogia di Utawarerumono, seppur sia ambientato prima, è caldamente, vivamente consigliato giocare prima alla trilogia perché nel complesso è una bellissima esperienza e sia perché migliora di molto l'apprezzamento del gioco.
