A fascinating concept. The monsters spooked me, but learning how to draw a map and then locate yourself on it with no compass, is just a great experience, and really well done.
Really good exploration focused game with a unique mapping system and movement. Super immersive, very tense at times with the occasional calm and beautiful moments.

Fun exploration type game for when you want a peaceful time.
I dig what Miasmata was going for. Unfortunately, it has failed to capitalize on its great ideas. The setting, the sense of mystery, the slow but deliberate search for a cure are all superb. Unfortunately, the game is borderline unplayable. While I could look past the abhorrent graphics, the protagonist's lack of motor skills or pockets makes the game a constant exercise in frustration. The game's physics engine makes the character skid and slide all over the place like a cow on ice. Climbing the flattest of inclines is a slow and arduous process, while walking down the same gentle slope makes the protagonist pick up speed uncontrollably until he trips and falls on his face, so you have to constantly apply breaks. And since you can only carry one flower or mushroom at a time, collecting specimens and exploring the island becomes a long and boring chore. Although Green Hell had its own issues, it features a very similar story and gameplay on a much more modern and fleshed out engine, and is a lot more enjoyable to play.
I love this game! Crawling through dense jungle - synthesizing meds, all while avoiding a mysterious threat - had an absolute whale of a time - I will say that this game kind of wore out its welcome when it came to the rainbow orchid, but other than that I loved everything about this experience.

Попутно вспоминаем то немного, что осталось от объяснений географа по поводу картографии, ибо самостоятельно обновляющейся карты не завезли.
Если серьёзно, игра топ в плане исследования и, особенно, ориентирования, тк каждый ориентир наносим на карту отдельно и ориентируемся только по уже готовым. Т.е. если ты забрёл в глушь, то без препаратов тебе никто не покажет, где ты - и это вызывает прямо восторг с каждым новым нанесённым ориентиром и клочком земли. Ботаника и крафт реализованы чуть по слабее, но надоесть не успевают.
Основные минусы кроются в техническом состоянии - оно довольно топорно местами, особенно заметно на хищнике. Но критичных багов или проблем за 2 прохождения найдено не было.

I remember giving up on this because I absolutely could not figure out where the heck I was going most of the time.
Great game. I love walking around in circles and visiting the same cabin I did four times before. I love picking up the same plants over and over again because I can't remember what the heck I picked before. I also love squatting in the bushes for ten minutes while a mutant creature circles my location looking for a place to take a dump. Awesome game. Would totally recommend!
Oh yeah... I also love the Runtime errors every other time I play. Nothing says quality gameplay like having to start over from a previous save and retrace your steps for half an hour. Truly the definition of high art.
Interesting concept, good graphics, but aside from that I have to agree with some other people here when they say it feels unfinished. like the knives/axes which do nothing, the food, which does nothing, then you have water everywhere but if you so much as step in a puddle you start to drown, and develop a fever, or if you slip and fall even 20 seconds after taking 'medicine' you will get a fever again immediately. so to sum it up, you spend hours upon hours,. just wandering around the woods, finding plants so when you slip and fall or step in a puddle you have medicine so you dont die, ohh and once in a while you run from a monster.

I can't even beat the game. It just randomly crashes when I try to use the canteen, refill canteen, try to science, falling off of cliffs, getting raked by kitty, picking up components of the cure, and applying the cure. After several attempts though I was able to reach the boat but it ends up crashing there too.

Управление, а точнее, физика перемещения это отдельная песня - сначала дико бесит, потом учишься перемещаться правильно и понимаешь, какая это крутая фишка. В игре приятная картинка, но в целом и технически игра очень устарела.

Miasmata is a really intriguing game, with some unique ideas that could have been very interesting to play. Unfortunately the whole experience is repetitive and clunky, the graphics are really not engaging, and the overall atmosphere is too low budget/amateur to keep me on my toes. It is definitely not bad, the concept on paper could for sure interest and entertain some players and some devs looking for different ideas about investigation, puzzle solving and exploration. But as a player in 2025, there is just no reason for me to spend more time on this.
This is a 62%, it's okay but completely skipable - only look into it if you are intrigued by the concept or in search of new ideas!

I played this game originally back when it came out and recently had it come up in my mind for some reason. Downloaded it on Steam and spent the last three days playing it. It's a great game if you allow the mechanics to sink in. If you are patient to actually learn the island of Eden.
Initially it was annoying that you can't see where you are on the map at all times and how the map doesn't automatically update as you move around the island. But once the triangulation clicked with me and I started to recognize the landmarks I truly began enjoying my time with the game.
I don't think there is another game like Miasmata out there.
There are a few visual bugs here and there. The game crashed half a dozen times. The mouse movement frequently stops working after you close the map. The only way to reset it is to attack or to open and close the journal. But outside of those few technical problems, the game is flawless in my opinion.

Ist zwar grafisch etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber immernoch eins meiner Lieblingsspiele, selbst jetzt in 2025.
Wer also eine schöne natürliche Szenerie, entspannte Musik und Pflanzen sammeln mit Nervenkitzel/Stressfaktor [spoiler]wegen eines gewissen Monsters[/spoiler] mag, der ist hier genau richtig.
An sich ein sehr simples Spiel.
Pflanzen sammeln, bei Untersuchungsstationen untersuchen, ein Heilmittel suchen.
Die Steuerung ist anfangs sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber in Ordnung.
Sie ist bewusst so und Teil des Spiels.
Die Kartenfunktion habe ich so auch noch nie irgendwo anders gesehen und gefällt mir sehr gut.
Diese muss man nämlich erst mal durch kartografieren selbst aufdecken oder Kartenteile in Außenposten und Zelten finden.
Mit einem Kompass rennt man dann durch die Welt und muss zusehen, wie man sich orientiert.
Man verläuft sich tatsächlich relativ schnell, wenn man nicht aufpasst.
[spoiler]Das Monster ist recht simpel zu handhaben, wenn man den Trick raus hat.
Am besten man sucht sich direkt hohes Gras oder einen Busch, sobald Herzschlag losgeht und versteckt sich dort.
Das Spiel ohne Ton zu spielen ist demnach nicht zu empfehlen :D
Je nach Region ist es einfacher oder schwieriger ein schnelles Versteck zu finden.[/spoiler]
Je nachdem wie schnell man ist, hat man die Hauptstory in 6-10 Stunden durch.
Wenn man jedoch wirklich alle Pflanzen entdecken, die Karte komplettieren und alle Notizen finden will, kann man mit einer Spielzeit von ca. 18 Stunden rechnen.
Der Preis ist für das, was es bietet, in Ordnung
Im Großen und Ganzen auch 2025 weiterhin zu empfehlen. <3

Good game, very original and the weather system and clouds look amazing to this day. I just wish the game had more QoL features and ran better, along with having a safe mode where there is no monster and you could walk around like normal and just explore the island.

Controls aren't good, very unappealing landscape and just boring to walk around.
Poor controls that aren't explained, very slow gameplay with too much aimless wandering, and a story that doesn't seem to continue after the intro. Why are there dead people all over the place? There's no internal monologue or anything. I managed to make some drugs, but how do you administer them? There's nothing on the key map for using the stuff you make. It shows that it's a 2012 game, but it seems to be abandoned despite still costing more than comparable current games. Should be free at this point.
It's a great game with a beautiful hand-crafted map. A lot of love went into this one. I especially like the triangulation mechanic and the momentum-based player control that is frustrating to suck at but satisfying to master. 8/10 would recommend.

Tense exploration game. Make potions with mushrooms to power up and stave off hunger and sickness. Stay quiet to avoid what may be lurking out there. Watch your footing or you run the real risk of tumbling down a cliff and doing damage. Fill in the map by navigating with a real-world compass triangulation system. You really feel like you're discovering the environment.
Played this many years, near release. A fun and interesting cartography/triangulation game; I remember getting frustrated occasionally with the monster and some of the achievements weren't working at the time- but managed to map everything and finish the game. Might play it again when I have the chance.
I appreciate what this game is trying to do, but I couldn't find a resolution/FOV combo that felt comfortable. I kept getting motion-sick.
So between trying to focus through the fever-blur and feeling a little ill, I couldn't get much into the game.
I really like the mapping aspect, but I could not figure out how to make any useful medicines. The movement was really slippery. When I got bored, I couldn't keep playing. Sorry :(
This was bad in 2012, so of course it's horrible today. Janky and boring - so painful to try and get into. So many games these days that do this better. The Forest, Green Hell... Off to remove this junk from my account.

Miasmata is a fairly interesting mix between an open-world exploration game and a classical horror game. You play as a man stranded on an unexplored island; hoping to find various herbs and plants to cure the disease that is slowly killing you. Unfortunately, said island also happens to be home to a very large cat, which ideally would like to eat you before you get to leave,
Ironically, this nondescript 'Beast' usually is the least of your worries. What should worry you is that every last of your moves carries momentum, and said momentum will more than often see your character slipping, running, and then falling heads-over-heels because trying to climb a nigh-vertical cliff face probably wasn't the brightest of ideas.
To put it bluntly: Miasmata will be frustrating at first. And its peculiar movement system will take some getting-used-to. Once you do, however, you'll find yourself pushing back against your chair while you try to prevent your character from losing its footing. It's a weird king of category for a horror game to be sure, but Miasmata can proudly claim to be a hiking simulator from hell.
I played this game as a kid and wanted to relive some nostalgia, but the game still holds very well, not so much in terms of graphics but how fun, tense, and sometimes even scary.
Happy to play it again.

It took me many tries to get the cartography aspect of the game right, but I did it.
The game feels like an actual adventure through the jungle, and the environment, as well as the attention to detail kept me coming back to Eden for more.
Strongly recommend playing.
It's a bit janky, but I love it.
The story is really interesting, and is very well implemented into the game mechanics. The soundtrack is excellent and sound design of moving on different terrain and animal sounds is also great.
It doesn't have too much survival mechanics, no food or hunting. Only medicine and water, which you get from pitchers in tents and certain ponds. You also have a canteen that can hold 5 gulps of water.
To reveal the map you have to "triangulate" by pinpointing different landmarks visible from your position. Also something I didn't quite get at first was how to get distant landmarks. You have to triangulate your position first, then you can point out undiscovered landmarks, and basically triangulate their position the same way, so you may need to point them out from different angles.
Your character, Robert Hughes, is sick and you have to combat a fever by producing medicine from plants, or with bed-rest. There are tents/huts jutted about the island where you can rest, find clues, and store up to 6 plants. The storage cross over between huts, and you can carry 2 different plants in your hand. Only a few huts have the necessary setup to make medicine however. You can only keep one of each type of medicine at a time, if you try to pick up extras they disappear into the ether.
There is also a beast that's hunting you on the island. It can't be killed, so you must outrun it or hide from it until it goes away. The beast will become more aggressive in time, and end-game I found it to be a tad much at times, when I hid from it and it didn't go away (though that may have been a glitch or pathfinding issue), only to have it come again 3 minutes after leaving the tent the next day.
The movement is perhaps the games biggest issue, It feels more like skating, and you have to be very careful when moving downhill, lest you'll slide and fall. Which you'll be doing a lot, as it's a very bumpy island. Your fever flares up when you're hurt, so keep a pill ready. The fever also keeps you from being able to swim, so stay away from deep water, though there are meds that can help on that front.
There are a few graphical and sound glitches, and some minor bugs, and some pytos in the notes you find in the huts. But overall it's a really interesting game. Especially considering it's made by only two people. Well done Joe and Bob Johnson.

I don't even remember buying this in 2012 - but apparently I did - and I haven't touched it since - so it must be Absolute Rubbish.
Twelve years after release, and to date, it's the only game I've seen with a cartography system implemented in just this way, makes mapping feel fun and rewarding, Even if it's pretty barebones and the art is showing its age, It's competently designed and there are parts of this game that are breathtakingly beautiful. An ambitious project from a two-man team that's worth your time, even if it is a little rough around the edges.
I really wanted to love this game, but in just 90 minutes of play time I crashed 5 different times. That's not a tenable experience considering the time between save points.

It's a game I've wanted to play since I was a kid. I fell in love with the graphics, the theme and the artwork. AND THE MUSIC.
I'm 17 now. I finished the game. I love it. Amazing game with a great story. The graphics aren't the best, but for some reason I find them great with this game. The plants and details look amazing to me for the year of release. The medicine making process could be longer or the research process and even the whole game. I actually finished the game in one go and didn't sleep at all and I'm still having withdrawal because there isn't another game like it(do you know of any???). The problem I had was that the game didn't have a translation into my language, but English in the game is not the most complicated. I don't think I've played a better story game <3. I send a round of applause to the authors. Good job Joe and Bob.
This is a hidden gem. Despite many of its shortcomings, the experience is no less than reading a thriller. It's a good reminder on the need for a thriving indie scene as we enter the era of live service quadruple A's. Please make more games, IonFX.

I really want to love this game, but I guess I'm just going to have to go against the flow here. It has all the right ideas. It's the execution I'm having a few problems with. I realize that this is an indie game in the purest meaning of the term and didn't expect it to be the most polished thing in the world, but there are some things that feel less like an issue of lack of polish and more like they were just trying so hard to make things realistic that they actually lost sight of reality and instead slam that fourth wall in your face all the harder than ever before completely ruining any existing suspension of disbelief. It's really quite too bad because some of the things they did for the sake of realism could have made the game truly shine and they've definitely made this island an interesting and beautiful place to explore -- they just tried too hard and made it turn far more unpleasant to actually do so than it should be.
First of all, one of the things driving me the most crazy is the way the game handles slopes. It's trying for realism, but you start sliding with ridiculous ease. Also, once in "slide mode" you have to reduce speed below a certain amount or the slide mode won't end -- I've actually slid UP a hill before! It feels like I'm sledding in a snow-covered area, except obviously this area must be very warm or the main character would be dead since he brought nothing (not even decent shoes apparently.) In fact, based on the story I'm guessing he's an escaped convict because he couldn't even bring so much as a backpack or, well, pants (no pockets! You must hold everything -- even small flowers -- in hand and if you fall it all gets dropped all over the place.) It's really hard to climb any slopes -- even the one foot tall slight incline leading into the side you'll most approach of the first "laboratory" building you'll be dealing with. IRL I'd just probably just step right over it (not even a real jump really) straight to the building, but in this game I'm sliding down, trying to jump straight forward, bouncing (seriously, if you just barely hit something in a jump you bounce backwards as if you were made of rubber.) It doesn't help that when you jump while on a slope it's very hard to jump in any way other than exactly perpendicular to the slope. If you gather enough inertia you can jump at a better angle, but for some reason apparently the character can't bend his knees at all, so it's perpendicular whether you like it or not if you don't have the right inertia.
Also, it's kind of annoying that you can carry three samples at once, yet you can only carry one of each -- you can't pick up three of the same flower. This is a real pain when you need a particular thing to make medicine yet have to trek through a pretty good bit just to get to it since there is a finite amount of resources in the game and you can only get so much close by. I mean, worst case scenario, given the situation, he should be able to make a makeshift sack using the burlap-like material on a few buildings and some of the rope holding it up. (Sacrifice a small piece of ONE of the many structures and you'd have a bag that could carry an enormous amounts of the materials you need to, well, live. It seems such a small price to pay for an enormous benefit...)
Which brings me to another thing. You get feverish not over time (or if you do get fever over time it's not enough time that it has happened to me from time alone yet) but based on frequency and extremity of when you fall or otherwise get hurt. I'm running out of plants to make medicine not because I've been on the island for months (BTW, on the ironic side, while the game is realistic enough to require you to drink water, deal with fevers, and etc, you don't deal with food at all! The closest thing is there is some rotten fruit in a few of the shelters that you can pick up and throw apparently as a weapon) so I'm having to run back and forth just trying to collect it (and you can only "store" six samples at once, and only hold one pill of each type at once -- though you can make an extra strength medicine that supposedly lasts longer so you can carry two if you make it and a normal one.) How you get feverish just from falling is beyond me. Last I checked this is not a normal symptom of falls. Sprains, broken bones, etc I can understand, but fevers? Given that a "fall" occurs just from sliding past a certain speed and you slide with ridiculous ease (I've actually "fallen" on perfectly flat solid surfaces!) I'm popping pills like a junkie! (If nothing else, shouldn't there be a such thing as overdosing?) If they wanted to go for realism, they should just do the "hidden hitpoint system" like many games do where your health improves over time, but you don't really know exactly what it is and then just add consequences like not being able to walk very well. Or even have no healing and if you sprain your ankle you walk with a sprain from then on (well, that would be a bit rough, but it would be interesting and less annoying that constantly having to make medicine and pop pills just because you tried to walk up a slight incline that couldn't even be called a hill...) I feel almost like I spend more time sliding around than walking or running. If you could just regain control fairly easily and quickly it wouldn't be so bad, but no matter how you hold the back button or even turn, often enough the only way you can get your ice sliding under control is to slam into a tree (which further reminds you of the way the realism ISN'T realistic by the fact that this actually doesn't hurt...)
And the map system. OMG... Now, I want to state for the record, I'm actually pretty ok with the idea of triangulating to find your current location. IRL you don't just pick up a paper map and then suddenly know your current location at all times. Alright, there are GPS systems and such, but since he's an escaped convict with prison shoes and no pockets I'm not surprised he didn't bring a GPS system with him. HOWEVER, their system goes far beyond simply requiring triangulation. First, you can only use man-made landmarks and you can not make your own (so no tying a dyed piece of fabric in tree limbs or something for the sake of mapping the area better.) Even if you see a giant boulder that stands out or a cliff edge that you could recognize anywhere, it means nothing, however, a pile of sticks someone threw together on the other side of the "river" you see at the beginning to the left (I can't figure out if it was supposed to be an animal trap or what exactly but apparently it counts as a man-made landmark even though it's just a few sticks standing on top of a couple of other sticks and so small you usually can't so much see it as much as the mark indicating where it is) counts just as much as if it were a giant stone statue... Second, it requires exact line of site. A few leaves in the way and that's it. I usually end up spending about four minutes in the middle of a pixel hunt worthy of the worst adventure games (at least there are fewer pixels to search in in a 320x200 resolution game!) to get a point in many areas with trees because just knowing that it's exactly a straight line past that tree is not good enough, you MUST see it with your eyes. The worst thing is, since you can only use known landmarks, you must mark new landmarks which is an absolute incredible pain. It's a two step process that requires that you first triangulate using two known ones and then you must move to a new spot and triangulate again (and as far as I can tell it seems to require that you use another two known landmarks because I haven't been able to get it to learn any new ones by triangulating just two separate positions alone using the same landmarks even though supposedly the point is just to triangulate the new landmark.) This makes exploration an incredible pain in the rear, yet exploration is one of the most important parts of the game... I'm probably ul
the game's a buggy mess, things seem to break at random (my favourite time was when game saving actions caused the game to crash; i have no idea what i did to fix it, or if the game graciously allowed me to play again), some achievements won't work unless you install an unofficial patch. that being said 10/10 would recommend, this game is my roman empire and i need help
A very shallow survival game with terrible gameplay mechanics. In this game you basically just wander around looking for plants. For some reason, your character can only hold 3 flowers at a time, so you'll be backtracking constantly across a boring environment. The mapping aspect of the game is also really annoying, so get ready to waste plenty of time on that annoyance.
To make matters worse, the movement controls are very floaty, like your characters is always running on ice. Not only does this affect the feel of controls, so your character also falls and slides constantly, like his feet have no grip whatsoever.
Ultimately, I just didn't care enough to keep dealing with the many annoying aspects of this game. Overall, this game isn't worth playing at any price. It's simply a waste of time.
There is something genuinely exhilarating about getting truly lost in an open world game. Exploration is at the core of Miasmata, relying on an initially empty map, a clever triangulation mechanic, and making the simple act of walking around a possible danger.
Everything about the game makes you engage with its environment. All of the objectives you get, all of the plants you're supposed to gather, and all of the writing are delivered diagetically.
Its overslippery and tumble prone protagonist makes for some occasionally very tense chases where one wrong step could lead to a bad fall, leading to death or you dropping your precious flowers on the floor. Having to actually watch your step when navigating is nice, but it is frustrating more often than it is interesting.
It has problems outside of its clunky movement not always having the intended effect, like a shallow health system that is more of an annoyance than something you really think about.
Getting lost and getting chased through treacherous terrain by the creature have made for some unforgettable experiences. This game understands what exploration should feel like. Too many open worlds end up being already charted and safe territory, serving more as backdrops for a checklist of things to do and collect. Miasmata stands out by making charting and traversing its world the core gameplay of it.
Word of warning, it crashes a lot.
Miasmata is the best game no one's ever heard of. It's a game that lives in my “not technically fun but ruthlessly compelling” box alongside games like Pathologic and Rain World. It’s part cartography game part survival game part narrative mystery, but any comparisons I can try and make would only emphasise how unique it is. It has the most interesting mapping/traversal mechanic I’ve ever seen in a game, being entirely based on using line of sight to triangulate your position and a combination of compass and incomplete map to find your way around. It’s also totally broken, buggy, glitchy, crashy, and janky, but like any game with a ton of heart and a strong core, none of these glaring issues have killed my burning desire to keep coming back, compass in hand, again and again.

Sorti en 2012, Miasmata était déjà vieillissant à sa sortie par ses textures et effets plutôt moyens, même s'il faut reconnaître le mérite des développeurs qui ont conçu de zéro un moteur de jeu spécifique. On est évidemment loin de la jungle d'un Far Cry 3, pour prendre un titre contemporain, mais les moyens mis en oeuvre n'ont rien à voir non plus. Laissons donc de côté la partie graphique, qui, mis à part quelques questions de luminosité ou de rendu des éclairages, ne nuit pas non plus à l'expérience de jeu.
Le jeu se donne comme une aventure centrée sur l'exploration d'un île plus ou moins déserte avant l'arrivée de scientifiques exilés, dont fait partie le héros. Aucun dialogue, pas de combat non plus, mais l'exploration est traitée par le biais d'un système très ambitieux de cartographie : à partir de lambeaux de cartes trouvés dans quelques avants-postes, au détour de chemins à travers l'île, on peut trianguler sa position et de là noter celle d'autres repères situés sur des éminences du terrain, permettant une découverte progressive de l'île. De tous les jeux de survie/exploration auxquels j'ai pu jouer, c'est de loin celui qui place la barre le plus haut dans le réalisme cartographique, et parvient à en faire un élément intéressant du gameplay. Il faut à la fois conserver ses repères, savoir vers où regarder pour retrouver des points connus, et optimiser sa position pour trianguler avec des lignes de mire sur les cibles. C'est par moments assez ardu !
L'autre volet majeur du jeu est la science, puisqu'il s'agit de synthétiser un vaccin pour une maladie qui touche le personnage et son pays d'origine. Il faut pour cela collecter des plantes, fleurs et fruits locaux, les analyser et les combiner pour créer non seulement ce remède, mais aussi d'autres médicaments qui augmenteront les capacités du protagoniste ou le soigneront. L'exploration conduit aux plantes, qu'il faut ensuite ramener sans se perdre dans des laboratoires disséminés un peu partout sur l'île. Cette "quête" principale est aussi assez unique en son genre, et complète bien l'exploration comme moteur du jeu.
Ces deux volets sont rendus plus dynamiques par l'existence d'une menace qui rôde sur l'île et traque le héros. Impossible à abattre, ce danger ne peut qu'être contourné et évité : il faut donc se cacher, ruser, et fuir en cas d'embuscade. Cela rajoute un peu de tension et un sentiment d'urgence à un jeu sinon très calme : on est cependant assez loin des mécaniques d'un Alien: Isolation, par exemple, et il faut reconnaître que les capacités de la créature sont un peu limitées...mais elle remplit plutôt bien son rôle.
Pour finir, le moteur de jeu a une gestion assez inhabituelle des déplacements, qui donnent une grande force d'inertie au personnage. Il faut quelques secondes pour accélérer en course, mais aussi pour décélérer, ce qui peut provoquer des chutes plus ou moins graves lorsqu'on freine près d'une falaise. Descendre une colline abrupte n'est jamais facile non plus et il faut parfois prévoir son itinéraire pour éviter les accidents. Cela donne une impression étrange lorsqu'on a l'habitude d'un mouvement plus vif, mais dans l'ensemble les déplacements sont assez réalistes et s'intègrent bien au gameplay d'exploration et à la nécessité de maîtriser la topographie de l'île.
Miasmata est donc un jeu assez unique, limité dans certains aspects mais profondément novateur (et hélas jamais imité) sur d'autres. L'expérience d'exploration est à nulle autre pareille, et sa richesse compense largement, de mon point de vue, les limites du titre.
Oof, this game gave me terrible motion sickness, and the only option I found that's supposed to address it was an FOV slider which never works for me.
On top of that, one of the things I have a low tolerance for in games is being chased.
I have a lot of other minor gripes about the mechanics as well.
I liked the concept, but there are far too many barriers to me enjoying it.

Unique game mechanic, and fun exploration
was a fun game despite its age, the triangulation mechanic was really what brought me in. would really like to see more games with that type of feature.

This game makes so much sense in the end. From janky movement to constant fever to overall apathy.
Movement at beginning is bad. So bad it pushes people to quit this game. Its gets quite a lot better after getting some items and improvements for you and you also getting better at it. I think its made on purpose, but one cannot be sure.
The story is quite well thought out but purposefully vague. And the main task of collecting plants is just enough exciting, challenging and rewarding enough to keep you going.
This game isn't masterpiece. But I do appreciate a lot what it is and the devs clearly knew what they want to do. After beginning struggles I had fun, and thats whats most important. And then I had something to think in the end. Both great qualities of any game.
Extra note is that I appreciate how forests in this game look like real forests. There is enough trees in forest to hamper your movement and trees are also tall enough to make seeing anything harder even from hills.
Mapping system also is one of the best ever I have seen if not best.
This game is awesome :) It's not your default survival game where you build and have to eat every 5 minutes but more an exploration game in which you try to reveal the plot and make research on plants and their medicational use. you have to sleep every now and then but because the nights are really dark you will automatically sleep then to skip them. you have to drink too but because in nearly every hut is a water pot its no issue at all.
And that would all be very peaceful if there wasnt a mosnter that stalks you over the whole map. sometimes that can be a bit annoying but that is a big part of the game. only downside is that it was announced that the monster has a really advanced AI and uses all his senses to spot you, like smelling and hearing. but in reality it just has spawn points at important places on the map where you have to go for the plot. that was a bit dissappointing.
But overall i like this game. it is like an interactive horror/mystery movie, perhaps a walkingsimulator +
The game is now i think over 10 years old but i find the graphics still very nice. the audio, espescially the music is still very good too. The controls take a bit of getting used to, but you get used to it fairly quickly and learn that you have to walk slowly and carefully instead of sprinting and jumping everywhere.
Overall i would give this game 7/10 and it is one of those older games i like to play every now and then even after 10 years. nice work devs!

Wasn't a bad survival game back in the day not sure how its doing today. But it was fun.
A game that has sat in my library for 10 years.. a game that should have been part of my childhood memories that I am now getting to enjoy at an older age. I highly recommend this game as it is one of those games you get so pulled into that you cant help but feel that you are always being watched.

Interesting concepts marred by poor execution. Poorly implemented, tedious, or frustrating mechanics, bugs, etc.
Nice short and sweet survival horror experience! Felt like a combination of 1) Alien Isolation/Amnesia: The Bunker general gameplay of undergoing expeditions to gather materials while avoiding a stalker that hounds you and 2) hiking physics even more intense than Death Stranding where you really need to think about terrain, balance, momentum, pathfinding and cartography and 3) the old-school low-fi hudless immersive-yet-janky feel of games like Penumbra and maybe Far Cry 2.
Despite its jank, it was definitely a very unique, immersive and addictive experience that I couldn't stop playing: especially loved the feeling of getting to know the land and not being able to effortlessly walk up 90-degree slopes like in Skyrim. Took me back to my days of navigating the woods as a kid, or more old-school games like Morrowind that make you use your intellect instead of just following the glowing waypoint.
Survival adventura, kterou jsem rozehrála asi 11 let po tom, co jsem se dozvěděla o její existenci. Mnohokrát jsem na ni dostala chuť, ale nikdy se k ní nedokopala. Až do teď. A že jsem poslední momenty nevěděla, zda ji vůbec dotáhnu do konce. Proč? O tom se rozepíšu.
Není to typický survival, spíš některými mechanikami velmi originální a nevídaný. V kůži doktora nakaženého morem se probouzíte na ostrově, kde by se měl údajně vyskytovat lék. Vše co víme je, že jej namícháme ze 3 látek, ale které to jsou ani jak je získáme absolutně nemáme tušení. První originální věc je, že hra stojí na objevování flóry kolem nás. Utrhneme kytičku, doktor si ji poznačí do deníku, pod mikroskopem zjistí její vlastnosti a co by z ní šlo případně jednotlivě nebo v kombinaci s jinou získat. Nemusí vše objevit nutně sám, občas narazí na poznámky bývalých obyvatel ostrova či členů výzkumného týmu, který tu byl ze stejného důvodu. Ale co se nimi stalo?
Dalším originálním prvkem je pohyb a orientace herní postavy. V ruce máme kompas, neodhalenou mapu, jejíž útržky objevíme v různých kempech, a kterou si triangulací můžeme rozšiřovat. Chůze je krkolomnější a hlavně má jakousi formu setrvačnosti, čili našlapuji opatrně. Nejednou se mi stalo, že jsem výšlap neubrzdila a pak se svalila z útesu. Nebo, že jsem chůzí z kopce nabrala takovou rychlost, že to Robert neuchodil a rozplácnul se. Po několika kotrmelcích. Někdy pan "Padavka" uklouzne jen tak, třeba na hlíně. Jindy pan "Mamlas" začne nesmyslně couvat a klade odpor. Zároveň toho jakožto nemocný člověk moc nevydrží, neuběhá a neuplave. Nakonec mi to však přišlo jako super nápad, který ne vždy může působit šťastně. Mnohdy je to na nervy jdoucí.
Prostředí bažin, džungle i travnatých lesů je velmi pěkné a na první pohled dost svádí k bloudění. Nakonec je však dostatečně různorodé i zapamatovatelné na to, aby se hráč rozkoukal. Zvuky přírody jsou fajn, pohled na zapadající či vycházející slunce nad hladinou oceánu je taky moc pěkná podívaná a v noci je opravdu černočerná tma. Naštěstí ji můžete prospat. Audio i vizuál jsou obstojné a žasnu nad tím, jak se to bratrům Johnsonovým povedlo dát dohromady. Nemůžu se ubránit pocitu, že tento projekt byl jejich osobní a srdeční záležitostí.
No a pak je tu technický stav, na který nevím zda jsem měla smůlu nebo hrála roli zrovna má sestava, konstelace a počasí. Pominu-li dva pády hry při hodně tvrdém pádu pana "Vošousta" při běhu z kopce, tak po asi 9 hodinách hraní nastalo peklo. Hra začala náhodně padat u pití z lahve.. a pití ze džbánu. A nahlédnutí do mikroskopu. Při tom, co jsem si lupla prášek na horečku.. vlastně žádná interakce nebyla jistá. A nakonec se mi "buglo" rozhlížení kolem sebe, takže jsem TABovala jak vzteklá, abych se mohla otočit doprava/doleva. Asi 2x se mi stalo, že mi začaly předměty v ruce glitchovat do takové míry, že jsem místo do mikroskopu koukala do velké rozplyzlé textury. No byla to psina. Po asi 40 nešťastných pádech během 3 hodin hraní jsem se rozhodla, že tedy hru dohraji další den. A naštěstí jsem ji již bez pádu dotáhla. (Zkoušela jsem komunitní patch, reinstal, instalaci z SSD na HDD a nepřišlo mi, že by cokoliv pomohlo)
Na jednu stranu velmi oceňuji kombinaci originálních mechanik a nápadů, které jsem v žádné jiné hře doposud neviděla. Na tu druhou to byly i dost krušné chvíle, kdy jsem nevěděla, zda hru kvůli bloudění, neschopnosti si uvědomit měřítko na mapě, padání hry nebo dost náročné chůzi, dohraji.
Ve výsledku je to parádní originální kousek. Ale nevím, zda si k němu ještě někdy najdu cestu.
Hru bych doporučila lidem, kteří ve hrách rádi zkoumají prostředí, kochají se přírodou nebo objevují nové neotřelé herní mechaniky a hratelnost.

I have no idea how this game has mostly positive reviews.
The mechanics are so poorly implemented to a degree I didn't expect possible. How is it even possible to make walking so painful and frustrating?
Why can't I drop things? I just have to carry them around forever or put them in the "inventory" system?
Triangulation, cool idea completely ruined by slow animations and the constant running backwards down hills you got slightly too close to.
I can forgive the bad graphics, and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ quality of the animations, and the lack of widescreen support, and the weird way the game starts offset in windowed mode so you can't move the window, but the window is resizable so too bad if you try using shortcuts.
There are so many little issues that just stack up on each other and ultimately deliver a near unplayable experience, some ideas in the game might be interesting but they just make me want to play a better game that implements them properly.
I just have so many questions...
I really tried to enjoy this, to understand why people seem to think it's such a masterpiece but I can't. This reminds me of the low quality unity games people made as a joke and gave out for free, except it's trying to be a real game.

This game is amazing, and in some ways it's unlike anything I've ever played before. The entire vibe of exploring the island and finding waypoints is wonderful, and the sense of scale (you as a player compared to this island) is awesome. However, it's too unstable and crashes constantly. When you combine this with the intentionally spread-out save points, it's basically unplayable. The worst is that sometimes trying to save the game triggers a crash!
Update: This game wouldn't leave me alone and I had to finish it, despite the crashes. If you prioritize lights before anything else (including water, meds, etc), you may not lose TOO much progress (maybe only 10-15% instead of 80%). At some point, my characters right hand turned inside out in every animation, which ruined the mood a little.
Despite these flaws, there's nothing quite like this game.
I would love for this to get a high-def, stable rerelease.
Когда-то рефанднул игру, поспешно посчитав её слишком занудливой. Да, игра и вправду нетороплива, и я даже рад, что ничего не торопит игрока быстрее найти лекарство. Можно в своё удовольствие исследовать остров с обилием красивых биомов, наполненных живностью и звуками. Мешает полному погружению, разве что, устаревшая графика и иногда корявая система света, которую разработчики пытались подстроить под реальное восприятие яркости человеческим глазом. Интересным решением стало ощущение от управления главным героем. Ты правда чувствуешь вес тела, тяжесть на подъемах и инерцию при спусках, сопровождаемых отдышкой. Последний раз такое я видел в Mirror's edge. Лор подаётся через записки, заставляя задаваться вопросом: [spoiler]"Кто же убил всех учёных?" [/spoiler]? Отвечая на этот вопрос только внимательным игрокам в финале.
Я рад, что дал игре второй шанс. Самый интересный опыт, который подарила мне игра - это способ, которым она пугает. Полная свобода в исследовании и страх неизвестности. В начале ты волен идти на все четыре стороны, исследовать остров как хочешь, собирая крупицы информации о местонахождении очередного цветка. И если другие хорроры пугают запертыми пространствами, Miasmata кидает тебя в открытый мир, где только ты, карта, компас и зверь, следящий за тобой. Let's just describe some of my "expeditions".
I went on with a full day ahead of me, plenty of time to discover a big part of the island, I thought. I ventured into the woods, trying to be attentive to the vegetation around me and of the possible appearance of the beast hunting me. Then I saw it, this big mountain with a huge cliff. So appealing to climb up, I found a way to the very top but not without taking a big fall, I had to take some medicine to counter my headache. On the top I managed to draw a big part of my map, and take bearings of important landmarks for my later explorations. Time to go down now, but on which side? The unexplored one? Or coming back to camp? I looked at my watch, noon... So early to go back... The temptation is big. I went for the mysteries. No beast, no new plant, but a huge part of the map was being revealed, an important endeavour. I finally reached the coast. I could see on the other side where I have been exploring a few days before. So beautiful that I did not realized that the sun was setting over the landscape! In a matter of minutes I could not see over 5 meters in the thick wood, coming back through the mountain was not a possibility now. I remembered the time when the beast was chasing me in the dark and I had to jump into a lake to reach a camp. The fear took over and I decided to wait here for the sun rise. Time went by slowly, I was thirsty and realized I had almost no water left. I had to move if I wanted to survive the night, the plague can handicap me very fast without drinking. I decided to round the coast in the hope that my predecessors built a camp somewhere on the shore. I saw an intriguing small peninsula and ventured onto it, it is only at its tip that I saw it, the end of my misery: a small tent inviting me to come rest (and save all my progression that otherwise would have been lost). Tomorrow is another day, another expedition.
Awesome experience, the best exploration game I ever played.
Cult game. Survival before survival was a thing as a genre. One of the very best exploration mechanics and dynamics I've played. A must in my book.

Fun and interesting game. I liked the cartography means of revealing the map. The Unreal Engine is running smoothly, but maybe it was just dated a bit on the shaders because the tiling was awful. I also felt the "perspective" was a bit off - like you were the size of a large dog rather than a human.
A lot of people didn't like how clumsy your character is at the beginning of the game - I think the game makes it pretty clear that you are deathly ill... so of course you can't breath and can't run. My only advice is as tempting as it is stop looking at the ground at your feet - lift your head and you will be more stable.
If you are wanting to complete the Steam achievements - you absolutely must install the community patch made bye DarkStarSword (find it pinned in the discussions). I would also advise the Miaschiev Achievement Tracker... If like me you don't install the patch before wondering why something isn't popping - you will need the Miaschiev app to "reset" a flag or two. To be clear - neither the patch nor the app are cheating in my opinion. The patch fixes several real bugs. The app can fix a bug if you have already tripped it in the game - sure you have to re-do that one thing - but without the app that tripped bug will never fix itself.
There were a few mind numbing tedious achievements - mapping the entire coast line... without the app I would still be looking for which one pixel (literally) wasn't lit correctly on the map as in the game everything looked exposed. Lighting the urns - keep detailed notes as they don't stay lit (or use the app to take the notes for you). The plants... there really is no online help for this one... but there are 36 plants not 32, and some that the wiki say are "common" are only in one or two places...
Don't forget, some plants are very "low" to the ground - and even though you feel you are only maybe 2' tall, you might have to "crouch" to pick them up...
Last bit of advice - the game doesn't end when you give yourself the cure... but life gets a lot better. You can now swim all day long, you can run all day long, falling (even off a cliff) no longer hurts you, and best of all "Milo" the cat no longer spawns... so my advice to achievement hunters is to not worry too much about any of the achievements (other than the "hit monster with x ones) until after you are cured - cartography with out the cat is much better, and being able to swim gets you around a lot easier.
Clearly a passion project that a lot of effort was put into sadly did not connect with me. What I thought would be an enjoyable experience turned into something completely different. 3/10 should have been free

Todkrank sogar, aber der reiche Schnösel von Welt sorgt natürlich vor. Schon lange vor meiner Ankunft hab ich einige Forschungsteams hier angesiedelt, die sollten mir aber mittlerweile ein wenig mehr als ne lahme Hühnerbrühe zusammenkochen können. Im Idealfall haben die Herren Eierköppe eifrig geforscht und gleich ein Heilmittel für mich parat.
Aber wie eigentlich immer - Man wird enttäuscht.
Die Labor-Heinis haben nix zu tun, als unter der tropischen Sonne faul rumzuliegen und gar nichts zu tun...
Typisch mal wieder.
Faul, überbezahlt und... ähmmm. tot.
Mausetot sogar...
Aber das lass ich als Ausrede nicht gelten, allesamt Drückeberger sind das, jawoll!
Naja, selbst ist der Mann und in dem Sinne koch ich gleich mal ein Süppchen aus Mutter Naturs erlesensten und absolut giftig aussehenden Zutaten.
Hier ein Blümelein und dort ein Pilzchen und schon ist die Wunderpampe fertig.

Also entweder werd ich jetzt gleich zum Hulk mit übermenschlichen Kräften oder ich kipp aus den Latschen, mal gucken...

Oder eher reif fürs Altenteil?
In beiden Fällen kann ich Dir dieses Survival-Exploration-Adventure-Stilmix-Dingens nur wärmstens empfehlen.
Hier gibts anders als in The Forest und Konsorten keine Wilden, Kannibalen oder sonstige Bösewichte, die Dir nach dem Leben trachten, nur ein einsames Mönsterchen, dass tatsächlich richtig schlau und gerissen agiert und noch dazu absolut unsterblich ist.
Toll!
Dein eigentlicher Gegner ist allerdings die eigene, eher gebrechliche Gesundheit, denn schon bei Deiner Ankunft bist Du sterbenskrank und Deine Forscherkollegen liegen mausetot in der Gegend rum, statt an nem Heilmittel zu forschen.
Läuft ja richtig gut.
Doch Jammern hilft wie immer nix, also suchst Du Dir Deine sieben Pflanzen eben höchstselbst zusammen und braust Dir im Labor den richtigen Energie-Drink mit Feuereifer selbst.
Das macht Spaß und die Rezepte sowie allerlei Insel-Wissen kannst Du Dir schön selbst erarbeiten.
Genau wie Deine Landkarte.
Die gibts nicht einfach vorgefertigt, sondern vielmehr darfst Du Deinen Standort mittels bekannter Landmarken selbst triangulieren und das ist zwar nicht gerade leicht, dafür aber echt spannend und mal richtig neu und erfrischend.
So stapfst Du also extrem realistisch übers Eiland und stolperst bei jedem Schritt, denn wer hier einmal in Schwung gerät, besonders beim bergab laufen, der fällt leicht auf die Nase.
Also Obacht, Du bist schließlich krank und gebrechlich, denk immer dran!
Dabei entdeckst Du Dein neues Heim nach und nach, gehst einem natürlich hier nicht gespoilerten Geheimnis auf die Spur und vielleicht rettest Du sogar Dein Leben.
Ne uralte eingeborenen-Kultur, oder vielmehr deren Überbleibsel in Form riesiger Stein-Köppe gibts auch noch und alles ist natürlich total mysteriös und gar gruselig grausig!
Vor allem ists aber höchst atmosphärisch in Szene gesetzt und der Exploration-Charakter des Spiels ist herrlich unverbraucht und motiviert zu immer neuen, stets noch waghalsigeren Expeditionen.
Deine Krankheit und auch den Durst im Zaum zu halten ist hart genug aber dem Höllenbiest, das überall lauern kann, auszuweichen ist noch härter.
Und hat Dich das Tierchen einmal entdeckt, macht es regelrecht Jagt auf Dich.
Ein bisschen Flucht-Horror-Erlebnis gibts also obendrein.
Und naja, grafisch siehst Dus ja selbst, der Zahn der Zeit und so...
Da muss man eben drüber stehen, als das hier erschien, wars aber echt hübsch und der Sound geht auch heute noch absolut klar.
Wenn Du also Nostalgie-Optik (sprich: hässliche Grafik), sowie eine etwas hakelige Steuerung ertragen kannst und mal ein kreatives und ganz anderes Survival auf ner Insel erleben möchtest, dann guck doch mal rein und koch Dir nen leckeren Gift oder Nicht-Gift-Tee.
Und beim vielen Erforschen, Pflanzen häckseln und Kochen und beim um Dein nacktes Überleben Flüchten wünsch ich Dir wie immer...

An immersive adventure with the right amount of survival, exploration and a bit of tension.
For the extremely low price you are going to pay for it, it will be worth.
One of the best horror games ever released on Steam. Easily holds up even 10 years later. Extremely atmospheric, so much so the monster will almost always catch you off guard. Highly reccomend.
Glitchy , cumbersome controls, 1990's graphics, constantly crashes on runtime error.

Interestingly, this is the very first computer game I have ever played. And it was certainly fun.
Crashes every 5 minutes (even with the community update to stop this)
Random frame-rate drops (down to 10 fps)
Awful character handling (guy can't run more than 10 feet without getting exhausted and tumbles to take damage if going faster than 1km/hr)
Creature AI so dumb you can throw a banana in its face and it will not notice you.
Lots and lots and lots of floating terrain/objects/flora even with v-sync on.
Light rays coming from beneath the ground.
POV focuses on highest point in elevation making it impossible to see anything at the bottom of a hill.
Achievements are still broken.
Miasmata was one of the best games to come out of Greenlight before that crashed and burned.
It was one of, if not the first game to use volumetric skies, volumetric lighting, realistic looking water and water reflections together. This game could barely run at release, it just asked too much of computers at the time. There are some pretty drastic measures taken to optimise the game, mostly in low LoD on many objects. But even with that measure taken the game can still look incredibly beautiful, mostly the sky and water at sunset or in dense forest.
It has some amazing, probably understated level design that gently guides you but never forces you down one road. You always have the freedom to go where you want or do what you want. It guides you with notes but never with an exact map marker or compass pointing you to it. The music fills you with such a calm and relaxed feeling as you discover new outpost and hear it's unique discovery music for the first time.
There is nothing else quite like it and it's hard to describe what makes it compelling to explore. It's a whole experience that needs to be seen to be fully understood. If you like watching sunsets or just being immersed in nature with mechanics that compliment it well then this might be for you.
