This game works as both a fully functional rpg, and a way to educate people about autism. You can tell the creator did his research on autism and listened to other people as well. The only real problem i have is the use of the puzzle piece, which has been used in the past to demonize autism and treat it as some sort of horrible curse

The game audio randomly broke, which was fine, until I got to the music class section, which requires listening to notes. I was unable to progress, and this made me so angry that I smashed up my expensive gaming rig and got shards of glass in my fists. I cried for hours and nobody came to help me. Do not buy this game if you're autistic.

I think this is a great game, regardless of if you are autistic or not. I think it does a nice job of portraying some of the difficulties through the media of video games.There were some improvements. I thought the last cut-scene was a bit repetitive if you lost to the last boss and had to reset, unstoppable cut scenes are a bit of a staple. the combat got a bit repetitive but I think they used the mechanics well, just a couple more fights than I was expecting through the game. I did not play the DLC, but I felt that the game was solid without DLC. But assuming it is of the same quality, the DLC would be worth it.
Overall, I'd give it a 9/10 game for a niche indie title.
This game is probably one of the most emotionally captivating games I played, and I mean it unironically. I have 30 hours on this game. I have not regretting anything. Worth every penny

I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

RPG Maker strikes again!
"Max, an Autistic Journey" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Unlike almost all RPG Maker "games", this is not the usual bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction.
Instead, we have something much worse. The "developer" of this RPG Maker asset flip did include some non-RPG Maker "art" assets, they are terrible. Notably the developer here couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make an RPG... and that's the only thing RPG Maker can do properly... except it's not even very good for making RPGs. Instead, we have a preachy "educational" autobiographical story about a parent with a child suffering from autism, with a few crap minigames punctuating the mediocrity.
Trying to address social issues through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. Game developers are not professionals in areas of mental health and social problems, and when they use video games to pretend they are, this can cause far more harm than good. It's my opinion that it's improper to use video games to push political or social agendas. Apart from the harm such hamfisted attempts at addressing social problems can cause, this offers zero benefit to PC gamers. People suffering from health issues or other social problems should seek out professional help rather than going to crap shovelware video games attempting to get sales by exploiting such problems for their own benefit, as is the case here.
And that's really what bugs me most about this... only a very small proportion of the profit from this RPG Maker asset flip was given to any charity. The developer primarily made this asset flip so he could cash in on the incurable disease suffered by his son. He exploited his sons illness for his own financial gain, with an RPG Maker asset flip. I've reviewed over 10,000 games on Steam, some of them the very worst things a developer could ever do, but this eclipses all of it. If the developers intention was noble, this would be amongst the 9000 free titles on Steam, but he wants $5 profit from you for his son's illness.
On with the usual list of defects universal to RPG Maker asset flips:
As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers.
You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. "Max, an Autistic Journey" has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for Picto #1, which you get almost immediately as you start the game, trivial to achieve, but less than 5 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 5 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game.
That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
"Max, an Autistic Journey" has the laughable, eye-watering price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.

Max is a bottom tier character I pity the father of that fiend. Charles on the other hand is a saint and single handedly made the game bearable. The final fight had more encounters than the entire game and the final boss was some bozo who got stun locked.
In conclusion, this game made me despite autistic people. Mathis is a real one and he needs his muffs back ong.
Now, I don't have autism, but I hope my kid does so I can bottle him. I'll just keep having children until one of them has the little quirk, I'll do IVF, impregnate socially inept women, you name it, and nobody's going to stop me. And when little junior has autism, I'm going to teach him how to count the exact proportions of alcohol and how many standard drinks they'll equate to. That way I'll have my own little calculator, who'll be able to gauge how many standard drinks I've had throughout the night.
Y'know, speaking of alcohol, it reminds me of the time when I saw an opened bottle of hand sanitiser nailed to the wall, that read "70 percent alcohol". Now at this point in time, I hadn't drunk for about two hours and desperately needed to quench my thirst. Without a moments ado I ran on over and began licking at the bottle, to get a few droplets of that sweet nectar. Ho ho ho, I couldn't be stopped. It took three strong lads to drag me away from the bottle. Good times, days when alcohol was in everything, even the hand sanitiser. Now you're lucky to find anything strong in this paltry excuse for ale they sell in the pub nowadays.
Anyway, Max is a good kid, a real good kid. We form a close, tight knit bond, him and I. He even has a penchant for games, since his imagination roams and works wonders due to the autism y'see. There's even an established favourite game of his, which we mutually enjoy, it's called 'Get me a beer now before I smash you'. The premise is simple, he gets off the couch and scurries away to the fridge, retrieving a drink. If he does so before the Footy ads pop up, then I won't hit him with the bottle. I feel the game adds a tangible sense of structure to his life and instils within him an honest, diligent work ethic. Too often are delivery industries rife with sloth, causing tardy Dan Murphy's deliveries. How's a man meant to drink his 34th pint of Guinness at 2am, if he's been kicked out of every pub, the stores are closed and his delivery is four minutes late? So yeah, you gotta start 'em young, lest they turn into indolent, lethargic fiends, with no sense of urgency permeated inside their minds. When he gets a tad older, I'll have him start benching beer kegs and brewing me brews. It'll be like I'm Willy Wonka and he's one of the Oompa Loompa's making my products.
Plans for my auspicious future aside, the game was touching, genuinely. It's good to espy that efforts are being made to ensure Max becomes a functional member of society. If I am to be candid however, my negative review is derived from the fact that this story relates to a real life experience between father and son, and said son Max at ten years old is being medicated for having Attention Deficit Disorder, a purely mental affliction, which doesn't cause physical harm to a child and instead is related to a hyperactivity personality, hyperactivity being incredibly broad and common for children. The game attempts to ambiguously refer to the medication, which is likely Ritalin or Adderall as simply being a 'little pill' which enables him to concentrate and be more studious in school. What it omits mentioning is the severe repercussions it can have on a developing brain, especially that of a child's. It can stunt growth, cause a chemical imbalance, lessen a child's appetite which can again affect growth because a kid needs to eat and deprive them of energy. It effectively makes them docile, placated and completely lacking in energy, during a time when they're meant to be happy, brimming with life and carefree. What they are doing is having a child ingest what is essentially a sedative, it's despicable. This isn't even mentioning the fact that it is addictive and if a person, especially since childhood, has taken the medication for months to years, they will grow addicted and suffer withdrawals when they inevitably try to live without relying on said substance. This will then likely cause an effect where they despise how they feel while on the medication, attempt to get off, suffer in anguish due to withdrawals and eventually relapse. It's essentially prepping a child up for a miserable life of addiction, and for what? To remedy an intangible affliction, which can be solved through natural means? I view the parents of Max with nothing but scorn. because Instead of taking the longer, less harmful and natural route to solve the perceived issue, they take the easy option and just choose to sedate their child. The whole mentality is literally just 'out of sight out of mind', because who cares if you are just pushing the issue under the carpet, it'll take years before it resurfaces, better just to temporarily resolve the issue and ruin a kids life, so you have more time to watch television. I also want to reiterate by saying that it's ridiculous to do this over a child being hyperactive. They're kids, if they aren't energetic and all over the place, then something's wrong. Allow a child to be a child, not an adult filled with the stresses off the real world. Anyway, I hope Max is doing well nowadays, I reckon you should give him to me for a week and I'll show him how to chug a pint of Guinness in under ten seconds. It's a speciality of mine and what I'm renowned for in the local taverns.

I recently played Max, an Autistic Journey and it was truly life-changing. This game brought my wife and kids closer together, and my wife and I even started to make love again. My kids also started to love me again after they had reported me for child abuse.
Although the game play is executed well, but given the engine it is created with,
Because of this (the engine, a somewhat rpg maker like kit) it just doesn't have me
wanting to play this game, even given the content and theme is interesting.
Guess what I'm trying to say is if you don't like aged rpg maker style games,
I cannot recommend this.
While this isn't a groundbreaking game in terms of gameplay or graphics, it's a great little indie game that gives a brief look into life with a child with ASD. As a dad of a non-verbal kiddo with ASD, I absolutely love the care that the creator put into this game for his kiddo. The little snippets of ASD info intertwined into the gameplay are great little moments of education for those who may not be in the ASD world. Great job, dev!

Max: An Autistic Journey is a game made with some requisite edition of RPG Maker. There are a lot of these games on Steam but this one's a little different. Rather than go on some ill-advised and inappropriately thought out quest with unbalanced monsters and spells this game attempts to guide you through a day (a few days actually) in the life of Max, an autistic child.
Was RPG Maker the best creation suite to make this game? Probably not, but I feel like it was chosen regardless because it's one of the most accessible and easy to use game dev programs to handle. Max is a real child and this game was created by his father as an act of love. I can't hate on this game for that reason, it's just too wholesome. Max's father had a story to tell and he figured out how to do it the only way he knew how, even if that meant using RPG Maker to do some wild things.
And yes this game does do some wild stuff with the RPG Maker engine. The battles are kind of hamfisted and feel janky but there are instances where you can play a musical instrument, a timed minigame where you attempt to calm down, and a couple of other oddities that make you wonder how in the world the developer figured this out using, again, RPG Maker.
Max: An Autistic Journey is not the best game. It's probably closer to the edge where the worst games are all things considered, but the game is sincere in what it tries to convey and for that I say it's worth your time if only to see the curiosities on display.
So as someone on the spectrum, I was intrigued and finally got the game. Within seconds I was filled with disappointment. The puzzle piece logo - why on earth is that in there when it's so heavily associated with negativity and the notion of erasing autism? Beyond me. Second disappointment came at the intro to the story when the parents were reacting to the diagnosis like it was cancer 'what are we going to do?' how about support your child like you would anyway there's nothing wrong with being autistic. Thirdly the clash of noises in a game devoted to autism is a weak choice. I have severe sensory issues and this really threw me off. Lastly, and probably the only thing I can forgive, the game dynamics need altered slightly as the action button fails to respond multiple times and leads to heavy frustration - also not great when you're autistic. Little to no instructions on how to complete each mini game also leads to confusion. This game could have been so good but it was so so underwhelming and just sad.
Some of the monsters just ain't child friendly some are inappropriate whilst other's are too scary and for those with ASD or Autism who want to play there is so much light sensitivity with flash photography which is ridiculously bright, its a great concept however just not well through out. I get the game needs to have some playability, too many puzzles within puzzles or missions within missions especially towards the night scene there was just too much going on imho.
Overall, I genuinely appreciate the awareness on Autism and making a game on this, well done devs :)

Hay algunos que son Zombies con carnes pudriendose, Piernas despellejadas atadas al techo (spoiler: estos aparecen si fallas al bañarte y limpiarte la piernas), o como en el final (spoiler) en donde tienes que agarrar unas 6 baterias, te salta un Screamer siempre al interactuaar:

Jugabilidad no ideal para publico infantil:
Si yo fuese un niño, y quisiese jugar algo educativo, al menos obtaria por algo mas arcaico, casual y sensillo, pero no por esto. Sumado a los combates y tacticas rpg´s: como usar auras para evadir daños por MP, y aumentar mas el TP, curar y purificar a nuestro aliados, etc.

ALGO DE DESBALANCE:
Max es un guerrero magico, pero es mas Mago que guerrero, y aun asi, no tiene ningun item, ni poder que le aumente bastante el TP. Solo al final, cuando sus hermanos se le unen a la batalla, puede regenerarlo de manera fluida.
Por que siempre, en los previos combates, se me hizo molesto, tener que ponerme en modo defensa o dar ataques basicos, que apenas hacian cosquillas, para poder cargar mi barra de Tp, y encajarle un Flashligth o Magic Maker, para causar un buen daño. Mientras, que mi MP, estaba de sobra. NUNCA HABIA UNA PUTA MAGIA, QUE DIERA UN BUEN DAÑO, O SE ME HICIERA UTIL EN COMBATE, PUROS ATAQUES ESPECIALES, QUE SE CARGABAN CUANDO TE SODOMIZABAN !!! :(

Al final, el prota termina siendo Puro tank y supp. Que tira auras para ayudar o potenciar a los aliados, por que no podemos quedarnos de acuerdo en un buen daño que supere los 2k, aun siendo level 30, mientras que Nuestra hermanita level 16, causa alrededor de 6k de daño con sus magias. ¡¡PTM !!

La historia, pues, si, cumple con su funcion de enseñar acerca del autismo:
Trata acerca de la vida cotidiana de Max, y como ve el mundo de manera fantasiosa y RPG. Siempre habran ¨combates¨, cuando nuestro prota haga algo cotidiano, pero que le cuesta, como intentar encontrar sus ropas y luchar con los germenes, intentar comerse la Lasaña que no le gusta, y pelear contra hongos de estas, etc.
Todo el mundo cotidiano, se moldea a la imaginacion de Max, y siempre es una lucha interesante por salir adelante. Al final, logra demostrar que es un chico valiente, al vencer su mayor miedo ¨La oscuridad y los truenos¨.
Pues, me olvide de algo:
hay un momento en donde nuestro valiente Heroe, sufre de Bullying, ya sea por el chico de Pelo negro con mecha blanca, que le quiere robar su desayuño, pero su mejor amigo lo recato. O como aquella vez que se quejo de su compañero de clase, en frente de todos, por ser aburrido, y la profesora lo castigo.
Haciendo que nuestro protra entrara en una crisis existencial, y luego, ser salvado por nuestro querido Godzilla, rey de la conciencia y de los Monstruos.
Sin olvidar que la Maestra, lo consolo, alegando que todos somos seres humanos especiales y no debemos lastimarnos, pero aun asi, no quedo concluso esa parte, de que si, afecto negativamente sus notas escolares, si despues del castigo, su papa no le reto como se debe, por faltarle el respeto a un compañero.
En fin, ya Spoilie casi todo, pero lo que quiero decir, es que la Historia se me hizo graciosa, interesante, bien educativa ¨en un sentido no ironico¨ para concientizacion del Autismo, pero la jugabilidad y la estetica de los enemigos. MEH.

Simple and old school, but very nice game to play. Maybe a little bit too fights in my opinion, because this is a game about autism and the story around it. However I recognise somethings inside me, I have to say in this game the autism is in an extremely hard form. It would be nice if there will be more games in the future that also emphasize the milder forms so the world can create a much better image of the whole spectrum.
But for everybody who can't imagine the life of a real autist I really recommand to play this game to experience it !!!

I initially had some bad things to say after getting destroyed by the final boss, but after biding my time and learning more about the characters' moves, I just beat it! :)
I should mention that I'm a young adult with autism, who does not normally play RPGs.
Negatives first. There are some features that would help. First of all, I wish I had gotten an in-game warning that I was about to face the final boss. Usually games let you go back before you do so. Second, in-game hints would be nice. There seems to be some sort of strategy for some of the enemies. Some attacks work, others don't. But I'm not good at gauging that kind of thing on my own.
There's really not that much bad about the game, though. Now on to positives.
This is one of the best depictions and explanations of autism in media I've ever seen. The amount of love you put into creating a game about this autistic child and how he sees the world is really heartwarming. It was helpful for me, and I'm sure it can be very informative for people who don't understand autism as well. The part where the King of Monsters talks to Max in the Relaxation Room... I really teared up at that. Even though I don't think I'm exactly like Max (I'm older, and not all autistic minds are the same, of course) it's clear that you really understand how we think and feel. Well done in that regard!
Finally, the art, the music, the story, and everything are fantastic. You put a lot of work into this game, and it was absolutely worth it. Well done. :)

Great RPG Maker game about autism.
Fun to play, why? Here's why!
a) real-life story with detailed situations
b) explanations of problems
c) simple gameplay, but yet not getting bored because of introduced varations
d) game was made by parent and his autistic child (that's mainly why it's so great, because story is basically about themselves)
Here are some other features:
- contains some well-known RPG Maker templates, but ALSO some unique stuff
- game's profit goes to foundations related to autism
- ability to Save almost everywhere (not all RPG Maker games allow that
- ability to play only with mouse :P
Final boss made me want to throw my keyboard out the window. a lesser gamer would have done so.
So rare to see a game about a real-life disorder come together with RPG elements. I deal with young people on a daily basis in my work and I have had a couple of autistic kids in my care. This game has actually taught me many things I didn't know about autism. Thank you so much to the developer for putting your heart and soul into such a masterpiece.
This game a treat to play in comparison to other RPG I've played. This game is meant to understand individuals who have autism while enjoying the gameplay along the way. I can understand a bit on those who have ADHD. I have a nephew who has ADHD and he keeps talking about random topics out of nowhere. He has the need to say whatever is in his head instead of listening to what other people are saying. Max reminds me of my nephew. Seeing the challenges and frustration allows me to realize that I have to take it easy on my nephew when he gets annoying. [spoiler]The part when Max was frustrated with his condition got to me. You never want a loved one to go into a depressed situation because no one gets what they are going through.[/spoiler]
The gameplay is pretty fun with a variety of easy mini-games to go through. This may be a lesson too. Sometimes players would love a good challenge, but having higher difficulty would likely frustrate players and stray from the purpose of the game. After all, most "battles" in this game are all in Max's head. This shouldn't frustrate him, but rather use these "battles" to cope or use it as enjoyment; hence most mini-games and "battles" are easy, so that Max will feel triumphant when overcoming the situation.
The visuals are great. I like RPG Maker games that use their own assets. There are obvious default assets in the game, but some things are different especially the art of the characters.
The game is recommended not just for the educational aspect, but for the fun gameplay that goes along with it.

I have a history with this game.
I was gifted this about half a year ago because my name is Max (I don't have autism though) by my friend Conner because he wanted to be a ♥♥♥♥. I decided to hold off on playing this until my birthday because that is when I can get all of my friends to come over... When I booted it up I found out that it was an RPG maker game. Within 4 minutes of playing this game it said he liked to play five nights at Freddy's and he had a nervous tick off saying "in fact" even when he was asking a question, windows also said that this might be a virus. The game then crashed my computer (my computer is not the strongest but it can run fallout 4 on the second highest settings at 30fps), this was the time my computer crashed since I bought it a year ago. When I booted my computer up again it took 30 minutes to get running again and I checked to see if it corrupted my computer. Nothing was harmed but I then ran it on my virtual machine so it would not crash my PC again. The game crashed every 15 minutes and I discovered that I had the power to walk through a table in the cafeteria. The game crashed again and corrupted my previous save so I lost 10 minutes of progress and gave up.

Umas das histórias mais tocantes que eu já joguei. Como professor que lida com crianças dentro do espectro autista, realmente me ajudou a entende-las melhor. Пожалуй единственный минус - не очень большая продолжительность, в остальном рекомендую без тени сомнения.
I highly recommend this game even if you are not very familiar with autism or RPGs. M,AAJ is a great game that details the everyday challenges of somebody with the condition, and does so with striking detail and respect. It is clear that many aspects of this game's story are either heavily researched or drawn from experience as this game is somewhat based on a true story.
The gameplay itself is very creative. Since this game takes place during an average day, M,AAJ goes the Earthbound route of making enemies out of the ordinary and mundane. As a fan of Earthbound-likes I've always loved it when games do this, however the context of these events being drawn from an imaginative mind makes it much more real.
The game is around 4-5 hours and never overstays its welcome. It also has a DLC campaign which I'd admit is a bit on the short side, but it is still enjoyable. If you're still not convinced know that some proceeds from this game also go to autism-related charities, so it's a great buy if only for that.
My fiance bought me this game because I am autistic and our daughter is named Max. I happen to love this game and recommend it highly to anyone who wants to have a fun time!

I'm choosing to review this with the context of it being something of an edutainment game.
Essentially you'll spend a day in the life (and imagination) of Max, an autistic boy. I have to admit I found myself rather charmed as the game went on - through the plot Max has his ups, his downs, and his moments where he's the same as any child his age. You're not going to find a mechanically complex or challenging game, since it's really more about experiencing Max's inner world and quirks specific to him - this is a good thing, though boss encounters will require you to be a bit more attentive with healing than other fights. There was one element I was actually quite surprised to see - [spoiler]very tenderly and gently given the age of the protagonist, the game discusses the risk of self harm and suicide in later years due to difficulties in coping and self management that can have their roots even in those early years of life.[/spoiler]. I respect spine like that.
This is also very clearly a game with a lot of love behind it. That normally isn't something I get to say in a review, not like this anyway.
I also have mucho respect for attributing each and every song and sound effect used properly and visibly.

This game singleplayer is based on a true story
In this game you play as Max, a soldier who fought in WW2 and got autism because of it. The Nazis were experimenting with Meme grenades, and one grenade got too close to Max and unloaded 50 TeraBytes of Memes into Max's head.
As a result, Max got autism.
Few years later, Max is accepted in the United States Marines "Special" Forces. An elite squad with very "special" people.

This game is amazing for me because it has the perfect ammount of gore, you can 360º no scope enemies' heads and blow their brains out, you can drive vehicles and the weapon variety is insane, for rifles you've got the Meme Blaster, for vehicles you've got the 4c[b][/b]han truck, it's amazing.
I recommend this game to anyone, all in all I rate it a solid:

Max, an Autistic Journey è un titolo particolare, ho deciso di comprarlo perchè mi piaceva l'idea di un gioco realizzato da un padre con il proprio figlio su un tema caldo. Vi troverete ad interpretare Max un bambino di dieci anni affetto da autismo e trascorrerete nei suoi panni una intera giornata facendo le cose normali che fa un bimbo di 10 anni (andare a scuola fare i compiti e cosi' via). Premetto che ho skippato buona parte delle schede informative perchè un gioco a mio avviso mi deve intrattenere non fornire kili di nozioni, i dialoghi sono ben curati e rendono già bene l'idea senza la necessità delle schede sopra citate. Un paio di bug non particolarmente fastidiosi li ho incontrati (piccoli episodi di pixel hunting e leve che non si tirano ma nulla che comprometta eccessivamente il gioco) i mostri sono quasi tutti ben calibrati ad esclusione del re dei mostri che incontrerete verso l'inizio che è abbastanza overpower ma si lascia comunque abbattere in un paio di tentativi (tr.it. usando pozioni vita come non ci fosse un domani). La trama tratta con estrema leggerezza il tema in questione ma alcuni momenti sono di una tristezza disarmante. Sono presenti piccoli easter egg e citazioni di film che ho adorato (spoiler con jon snow per me il gioco era già promosso).
In conclusione consiglierei il titolo a chi ha un minimo di conoscenza della lingua inglese (non è localizzato e non credo mai lo sarà) ed è disposto per una volta a interpretare un eroe un po' diverso dal solito.

In the past i got the opportunity to work and educate some children with autism, and i must say that this game represent a lot of barriers they have, not all types of Autism is on the game, because the history focus around Max a 10 years old boy and the challenges he need to work around everyday (what a day it was).
Well Crafted RPG turn based, the combat is easy to play , but you have some bosses that will bring your tactical mind. Max fears and anxiety will be represented by "monsters" that you need to defeat (or run). Music is great and very fitting and some Easter eggs here and there in order to crack you a smile.
In Fact i must end this review in a in a "Thank you" to the creator i can see clearly that this game was made with Love.

The game itself is fine, boss fights are really challenging (that's a good thing!) and I even learned a few things.
There's just one thing that was really annoying but guided me through the whole game: Almost every second sentence started with "In fact, ..." what became really annoying quite fast. Also the screen froze 4 times in total and I needed to restart the game and load the latest savegame to be able to continue from there onwards.
There were two or three enemies that felt kinda overpowered due to their healing/life suck abilities (looking at my screenshots there's even the possibility to end up in an endboss fight that would never end if you're unlucky) but beating the enemies is managable - especially if you keep on screaming like a madman during fights (chance to stun all enemies).

There's not much to say about bugs. Beside the screen freezing (which actually might be an engine issue of the RPG Maker version that was used) I was just aware of two smaller typos (eg "!" followed by ".") and a few smaller animation issues (missing animation for Lego wall skill, Max still sitting next to his brother while jumping away from him after beating the console game at the same time etc).
I'm not sure if I'd really recommend the game to someone or gift it to someone. It's really a niche game and most likely not everyone's taste. I actually like RPG maker games - this one is well made and not like all the others. Rating this one would be unfair compared to all those trashy "grind your level up to beat the boss" RPG Maker games which all look the same.

Gameplay itself is pretty garbo and the information provided is the sort of thing you see in parenting forums.
This simple yet unique RPG lets you see the world through Max' eyes: daily obstacles are monster bosses, little challenges are dangerous quests and small fears become scary nightmarish monsters. [i]Warning: near the end, when you look for batteries, you’ll get some jumpscares. But only then.[/i]
Luckily, there’s this Dad of the Year with all these helpful picto’s, some earmuffs and a flashlight. Pretty normal for us, but all these things mean the world to Max.
The overall style is very cozy and personal, because it’s made by Max’ dad (yes everyone in this game is based on Max and his family, and all experiences are based on his too). Like I said, Dad of the Year!
As someone who’s worked with children with ASD, I must say that this is a nice way to either learn about ASD or teach others about it. In my oppinion, it's even useful as a [i]serious game[/i] or something to add to psychoeducation for kids. The picto’s come with personal yet useful information about that special brain. I recommend it!

Nice little rpg about autism
Never seen or heard of this game until this past week. I decided to purchase the game predicated upon it's unique subject matter. This game is extremly well thought out and put together nicely. You spend a day in the life of Max, where you partake in various adventures in the form of mini games and treading through imaginary lands. You can not help but have a smile on your face when playing this game.
I have played quite a bit of RPG Maker games and this game stands all on its own. This was a breath of fresh air in the smog of churned out games in this category.

Me encontraba fascinado de poder ver que es lo que podría tener y como visualizan a las personas dentro de este juego, aún siendo adulto sigo viendo a las personas como 'aliens', y entre otras tantas cosas que con las que nos asemejamos a este juego.
Importante también que a pesar de esto, no es algo sobresaliente la jugabilidad, de la cual carece muchos detalles, llegando a ser aburrido y tedioso, siendo su punto débil engancharte como título de RPG. Pasadero sin gran mención.
Within the opening thirty minutes of "Max: An Autistic Journey", the titular character failed to understand a simple knock-knock joke, had a melt down over which bathroom to use and repeated a verbal tic a dozen times. As the father of a child with ASD, it felt immediately familiar albeit from a different perspective. "Max" tries to carry the player though a day in the life of a ten year old high-functioning autistic child and help you see things from his side. Along the way, the game is carried by fairly simple RPG elements where, through Max's imagination, the player does battle with obstacles as varied as houseplants, zombie ants, dinosaurs and manifestations of anger. The game uses pictographs at each stage of Max's day to help explain Max's particular challenges and how he has learned to cope with them the best he can. Despite being the protagonist of the story, Max isn't above reproach, sometimes making a joke about a fellow student's disability or causing a scene. By its broad strokes, Max's story seems true to life: he's not a Hollywood-style autistic savant nor is he sainted because of his disability, he's just a kid with his own unique struggles.
As a game, "Max" sometimes falters. There is a tricky line to walk between making a game challenging for the player and having a ten year old boy lose an imaginary fight with a toy dinosaur and "Max" tends to play it safe which means that combat soon becomes rote. Likewise, the minigames are designed more around evoking a sense of imagination or whimsy than compelling game play. I understand that they wanted some "game" in their game rather than a walking simulator PSA but it could benefit from some reworking.
Ultimately though, I felt that "Max" was successful in what it sets out to accomplish: giving the player an alternate perspective into the challenges of an ASD child without being overly preachy. I don't know if it holds up on its own as a gaming experience but I did feel like it had something honest to share.
Internet jokes aside, this game just isn't fun to play at all. A subpar RPG maker tier game that feels very rough and missing some basic RPG elements.

As someone diagnosed with ADHD as a child, and with several friends who have Asperger's, I can related to this game. You play Max, a 10 year old child with high functioning autism. Your job is to get through the day's challenges, such as getting dressed, making it through school, playing with friends, doing homework, and weathering a thunderstorm.
The gameplay is standard for games made with RPG Maker. You have turn-based combat, items, spells, and experience levels. The real charm of the game is not the gameplay, but how you see the world through an autistic child's eyes. For that reason alone, this game is worth the investment.

Je recommande fortement ce jeu que j'ai découvert avec beaucoup de plaisir, les mini-jeux étaient sympathiques et amusants, je me suis parfois faite tuer lors des combats, mais dans tous les cas j'ai ressenti beaucoup d'émotions.
Ce titre m'a fais rire, m'as émue, et parfois agacée aussi...
Ah ce personnage !!! Un phénomène ! Parfois sale gosse trop gâté, parfois émouvant, parfois rigolo, on peu dire au final qu'il ne laisse pas de marbre et donne une âme à ce jeu.
Une bonne petite bouffée de fraîcheur en perspective !
Je n'ai pas vraiment l'habitude de ces jeux rpg à l'ancienne, (rpg maker) et combats au tour par tour, mais là j'ai bien aimé car les mini jeux ajoutent un peu de piment, une dose de "autre chose".
Les conversations "full English" (pas de traduction Française ici) sont faciles à comprendre et ne demandent pas une connaissance soutenue et approfondie de la langue.
Le gameplay est facile à prendre en main et se joue aussi bien à la souris qu'à la manette, je n'ai pas rencontré de bug, mis à part peut être pour un succès (celui avec les fruits).
Pour ce qui est de l'histoire, vous vous retrouvez dans la peau de Max un gamin de 10 ans atteint d'autisme, et à travers une journée type vous allez en apprendre plus sur sa vie au
quotidien et les difficultés que cela implique parfois, sur cette routine qui s'instaure et l'aide à avancer ; le tout dans un monde où l'imaginaire et le jeu ont une place importante.
Si je chipote je dirais que pour les côtés négatifs, il y a trop de combats, beaucoup sont trop faciles, mais le jeu dans son ensemble est très bien réalisé, beau visuellement et amusant même si parfois on a l'impression de jouer un jeu destiné aux enfants. Enfin en même temps j'imagine que c'est l'univers qui donne cette impression car on incarne un gamin.
J'ai nominé ce jeu aux steam awards car il m'a beaucoup émue, si vous aimez les rpg, si vous avez envie de voir autre chose que des FPS bourrins, achetez le vous ne serez pas déçus, en plus une partie de l'argent est reversée à une association pour les personnes atteintes d'autisme.
edit : le succès avec les fruits a été réparé depuis et tout fonctionne comme il faut.

I can tell that a lot of love has gone into this game and it really shows. It is informative, hopeful and fun. Awesome story and very important information that is being brought across in a nice way. But sometimes the game design lacked a bit. Some bugs here and there... Most annoyingly though: very hard boss battles that followed no real logic whatsoever (as damage dealt, turns, etc seemed completely arbitrary). I can not imagine a child (the target audience, I would assume) not getting frustrated by these. Overall, though - amazing, unique and important!

This was an amazing game. Very story rich, educational, and heartwarming. Cannot recommend this enough.
