C'était l'un de mes jeux d'enfance sur wii et j'ai longtemps hésité à le racheter sur steam vu les commentaires négatifs. Finalement c'est encore mieux que dans mon souvenir ! Cosy-gaming avec une vraie petite aventure progressive, une mignonne petite histoire, un chouette gameplay, et une ambiance (à mon avis) ultra apaisante avec des morceaux classiques que j'adore et de très belles cinématiques. La nostalgie joue probablement mais franchement je recommande à 100% aux joueurs de cosy-gaming en général, aux fans de musique classique, aux débutants en jeux-vidéos...

L'un des jeux de mon enfance, ça aurait pu être un plaisir de le re-découvrir sur PC, dommage que le portage soit full buggé.

Les gros problèmes que j'ai rencontré :

- jeu qui crash en jeu (juste avant de sauvegarder, un pur plaisir)
- jeu qui crash lors du chargement de la sauvegarde. J'ai déjà mis plus de 30 minutes à batailler pour charger ma partie en relançant le jeu ainsi qu'en redémarrant mon PC jusqu'à ce que le jeu me laisse enfin jouer, youpi !

Petit bug mineure :

- des bruitages qui disparaissent
- des persos qui avancent au dessu des murs dans le château
- des bugs d'affichages (affichage d'élément que je n'ai pas encore trouvé, la bannière avec les infos quotidienne qui freeze,...)

C'est vraiment dommage parce que le jeu en lui même est bien :(

No a good port. At all. On every front, it's a straight downgrade.

The Wii version had a lot, I mean a LOT of bloom that is completely absent here. There's also the missing distant effects, such as fog and the "cloud haze" present in later areas.

The UI also received little to no care, disregarding the original art style and presentation.

Other than that, the game is buggy, incomplete, and severely lacks polish: objects floating in the world, translation errors, incorrect 60 (and 30!) FPS pacing, and so on.

If you want to do this game justice, open up Dolphin.

UPDATE (4,8 hours in):
I wanted to finish the game beacuse I have fond memories of it on the Wii and I value the money I spend - yes, even 3-4 $ -, but this piece of garbage of a port decided to stop functioning altogether after the first major boss. The game just won't go past the file selection screen anymore.
DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. PORT.

REVIEW:
The Game is great, really a hidden gem of the Wii Era. I bought this port during the summer sales because of nostalgia, and yet I regret even spending 4 Euros on it.
This version is hot garbage. I read somewhere that someone was hired to fix it and somehow made it even worse.
I'll mention ONE of the problems, just to let you know how lazy and poor this port is: the on-screen radar, the "minimap", doesn't work. They coudn't even get the freaking minimap to work. Imagine the rest.

One point for nostalgia.
One point for the beautiful music (when actually audible and not glitching).
That's it, 2/10, don't buy it.

そして多分これが直ることは多分無い！！！！！！
ただ対処するか気にしないでおけば大丈夫
自分の環境でのバグと一部の解消法を載せておきます。参考になれば幸いです。

・最初のOPの音はあるけど、ゲーム本編の音が無い
　パソコン本体の音量を上げる
　通知音が嫌いだったのでパソコン本体の音量を0にしていたが100にすると音が出た
　ゲーム本編での音はそこでのみ調整可能なので基本的に音は小さめになる
・ゲーム本編の音が無くなるもしくはめちゃくちゃ大きくなる
　ゲームの再起動を何回かすれば直る、何故か2回ほど再起動すると直ることが多い
　無くなる方はまだ良いけど、本当にめちゃくちゃ音でかくなるので気をつけてください
・グラフィックの一部が画面に残る
　看板を読むと、看板の上下の囲みが残る
　ニュースの帯の部分だけ画面に残る
　等ありますが、一旦気にせず城に入るなど読み込みが入ると消えることがあります
・ゲームを進めると国の外に出た後城に飛ぶ機能ができるがその時になにかチラッと映る
　映るだけなので気にしない☆

今のところこんなものだと思います。
バグを対処して良き王様ライフを！！！

Little King's Story for Nintendo Wii is one of my favorite Wii games of all time. This is not Little King's Story for Nintendo Wii. This is Little King's Story for PC. If Little King's Story for Nintendo Wii was on PC, it would be one of my favorite PC games of all time. Little King's Story for PC is [i]not[/i] one of my favorite PC games of all time.

In the 10 minutes I have played Little King's Story for PC, I have noticed multiple glaring problems not present in Little King's Story for Nintendo Wii, such as:

[*] Character voices not playing most of the time
[*] The UI is [i]hideous[/i] in ways unique to Little King's Story for PC
[*] The radar in the top-left is completely broken
[*] The recruitment animation plays bafflingly incorrectly

Despite all of the issues Little King's Story for PC has, it does have one key redeeming factor. It is still, despite its new, depressing flaws, Little King's Story. It still comes out the other end at least pretty good, purely by virtue of being Little King's Story

Would be traumatized by cows again.
Would rule a tiny kingdom of weird little guys, accidentally create a dictatorship, and throw pikmin at my problems until they go away (spoiler: they don’t)..
Discovered monarchy is not a sustainable political system, but I do like having a crown.
If you ever see me building fences and crying, mind your business.
Half my citizens died to a giant chicken. Their ghosts haunt me still.
Was not emotionally prepared for the ending.
Would declare bankruptcy, get overthrown, and start a new file again.

An absolute broken mess of a gem of a game. I have put up with so much trying to make this game work from broken mechanics to constant crashing to weird corruption of save files. Where to begin. 70% of the time you start the game your save file will not load and will crash the game on loading. To remedy this you need to keep three plus save files of the same game constantly in circulation to make sure you can go back and rest in a bed and try to overwrite your save and hope to god the save fixes itself. Otherwise you must Start the game all over again and wait until you can save an whole new save file so you can go back to playing the file you were making progress in. The UFO boss, crashes the game unless you do arbitrary things to load it in a roundabout way. Every boss has a chance to crash the game when you beat it rendering hours of progress lost when you boot up the save file once again (assuming it loads of course). Some mechanics just are outright broken and render a play through so much harder than they need to be, the clime up Mount Sobamanjaro has hidey holes that are wholly necessary to avoid rocks and one hit KO attacks from the boss and they are entirely unusable for some damn reason. Playing this game in hell mode for these reasons make the game an utter pain because you need to play at an even more careful pace but are brutalized by mechanics that are broken or do not work period. I do not recommend this game and feel sorry for anyone experiencing these problems.

Yeah don't buy this port. The game itself is wonderful and I haven't found another quite like it, but the experience of playing it on steam has been a nightmare. Constant crashing, bugs, and endless frustration just trying to get the game to run.

So tedious to fight a boss and have the game crash over and over. Or have the audio cut out. Or the map stop working. Or your save files not load. Or..

If you want to experience this game, emulate or play the physical release. Avoid this port at all costs.

Hablando claramente, es un autentico juegazo de la Wii, pero su port es absolutamente desastroso. Al nivel de que apenas puedo jugarlo sin que pare de crashear (con una rx 7600).

Recuerdo intentar jugarlo hace unos años con otro equipo y que el resultado fuera el mismo, y si lees por mas foros faltan pistas de audio para boses que usan sonido y mas cosas varias.

Me duele una barbaridad, pero no recomiendo para nada comprar el juego, sobre todo tratandose de un port 7 años despues del original, y que apenas hay mods para hacerlo funcionar. Jugad al original con la copia del delfin a poder ser si quereis disfrutarlo de forma mas accesible

I adore this game and have had it on steam for at least 6 years now. I come back to it every so often because I think I can push through all the bugs and crashes. I still cannot. I would love to play this game all the way through again. I could not get enough of it on the Wii, but the port is just so ridiculously difficult to play for any real amount of time. It make me so sad.

The other negative reviews are not exaggerating. This is a really bad port!

I had this game on Wii. When it was first announced that it was coming to Steam, I was ecstatic, but then it launched and it was terrible. They hired a well-known modder to fix some of the issues (And bless him, he tried), but this port is practically unplayable.

I got the urge to play this game again recently, but 2 of the 3 times I launched the game, it had no audio. The one time it did have audio, the music played fine, but the sound effects were very quiet.

There are also framerate issues. 60fps can cause gameplay issues, but 30fps feels too slow. Literally, it's playing in slow motion. (EDIT: I originally retracted this and said that. in actuality, 60FPS is playing in fast motion, which IS true. However, I loaded up the Wii version, and even though it's 30fps, it's still snappy. The framerate limits in the PC port are bad.)

Keybindings cannot be changed, meaning enter is the game's A button; Q and E rotates the camera instead of the mouse; and they used backspace, of all buttons, to recruit people. I watched a video about this port and discovered that controller support isn't much better.

But the worst issue I had was that the minimap is broken. If you move around or rotate the camera, the icons don't move with it, so the first part of the game with the treasure hunting? It's nearly impossible because you don't know where to go!

This is an amazing game that many people overlooked when it first launched on Wii. It deserves another look. It deserves to be played. BUT NOT LIKE THIS!!!!

I hope one day, this game is ported to modern consoles, and by extension, patched on Steam. Until then, I recommend that you play the Wii version if you can get your hands on it. The Wii version doesn't use motion controls and is all buttons, so..... You know.... *Wink wink*

I highly, highly recommend this game, but not this version of it. Play the Wii version, this port is extremely buggy. If you like Moon RPG and Pikmin this is for you. This game means so much to me and I played it at what felt like the perfect point I could've in my life. It'll surprise you a lot, it looks goofy but then somehow conveys a sense of dread in an extremely unique way, it really caught me off guard how anxious the plot made me, and for the most part, delivered on the theories I was making along the way. The gameplay is extremely addictive and solid, I consider it one of the best games in the Lovedelic legacy, it's truly a feat this game was made. Play Little King's Story

- random crashes after not saving for over 1h
- sound either spikes, or is bugged in a different way
- game crashes after some bosses
- scrolling text at the bottom is bugged, especially for TV Dinnah fight
- last set of flags are not shown in TV Dinnah fight
- save file is not loadable about 50% of times and reqires to restart game and make a different save in order to continue the actual save file

Just going to delete this game at this point after almost completing it. Just not worth it anymore. Game itself is 10/10. Steam port is 1/10.

Little King's Story was one of my favourite games on the Nintendo Wii when it was initially released, and clearly (being from the UK) I was one of quite a small number of children who got to play it. I am so glad that it is available to a wider audience. There have been many well-documented problems with the PC port, and despite the developers' efforts so far there are many issues (including the game sometimes crashing unexpectedly, and problems with loading the game). The graphics of the PC port are not quite as good as the Wii graphics, but the game is still beautiful, and maintains a great deal of charm. The music is as amazing as it always was. The mechanics of the game are intuitive to learn, and take the whole game to truly master. The plot elements also manage to thread a careful balance of invoking tropes about world conquest and saving princesses without it becoming creepy. Overall, can recommend.

Utterly broken garbage, avoid at all cost.

Has 2 visual modes: 30 fps where game plays like a slideshow and 60 fps where it's turbo mode. With 60 fps that's literally game at twice the speed making bosses and smaller enemies near impossible to beat. So you are forced to either play on 30 fps or use "quick switch" between modes which often breaks some stuff.

Controls are atrocious with controller and game is supposed to be made in favour of controllers. Aiming is almost non-existent, especially when there are two targets close by or on top of each other. Sometimes your party misses their targets even when walking right over it.

Boss fight mechanics aren't fun. While different with each one I've managed to fight, none was fun. With above mentioned points it's a hell of a frustration fiesta and I won't be suffering anymore trying to complete the game.

I really wanted to like this game, I like this concept for party management (even though taking a lot of clicks to readjust), kingdom building (pay for upgrade and new buildings are built in the world) and exploration. But at this point it's really nerve wracking with how many things don't work properly or at all.

Says that it supports XBox and XInput controllers but I could not get either to function at all after an hour of trying all available options and settings. After creating a custom mapping to just map keyboard controls to the controller even that bugged out and over half the keyboard controls simply didn't function and made the game unplayable.

I adore this game to bits, from the huge library of classical renditions to the world building and all. It is glitchy and if you don't care much about steam achievements, it's better to play the wii version on an emulator. I'd say proceed with caution but I think the game is just a nice cute lovable game that deserves some appreciation, despite the rough port.

At first when I was playing it the game would run smoothly with little lag, however now when I run the game it freezer or crashes. Another problem I am facing is that when I try to build structures that are necessary to progress in the game, like stairs the bar that shows the progress of the structures goes in reverse and keeps me from being able to progress past the first boss! Not worth it for a game I used to play in my childhood

This game is truly incredible. I also played this game back then on Wii when I was still a kid. This is basically my childhood game and I am so glad that they have it now on Steam. I read the previous reviews saying it had lots of bugs and issues. Now I am playing at 2024, although I also had some issues but they were so minor it did not bother me much. I love how I am able to play this game now and understand the overall story. I think it's still worth the pay. They'll use it anyway to continuously improve the game anyway.

PERO, la cantidad de bugs que tiene es una vergüenza, ya de normal para cargar la partida tienes que hacer malabares para poder continuar pero entre los crasheos randoms, lo mencionado de cuando inicias partida y que cuando le da la gana en mitad de una escena se bloquea el juego pues mira, le pueden dar por culo la verdad.

Si sois como yo, que jugasteis al juego cuando estaba en la Wii acabáis antes poniendo un emulador, de verdad, no lo compréis.

Good game, sh*t port. You cannot beat some bosses on 60fps like first mushroom boss. The 30/60 fps options really affect how fast you can take down some enemies and other mechanics like building and destroying obstacles. Don't forget the no sound bug and constant crashes. Still a great game.

I love this game to death. The vibe is super chill and the mechanics are very intuitive -although you have to do some reprogramming of the buttons since this was originally made for the Wii. The game does crash at times, as expected of a port, but the value of being able to play this scaled up on PC is priceless. I highly recommend it along with a bit of patience. Great story, art and pace. If not for the port bugs, it would be a 5/5 for me.

After I saved a few times there was a glitch so the game wouldn't load my save file. I can start a new game, exit it out and try again according to other players. It's very annoying. I used to play this game on the Wii and it was good on the Wii.

I know it's an ancient relic at this point, but if you can get this game on the Wii, you're talking about one of the greatest games of ALL TIME (Not JUST on the Wii).

I just finished recording a Let's Play for the game, like in the last 30 minutes here so I thought after playing about 30 hours I'd let everyone know my experience.

Is the game perfect? No. It's got some problems. They're all fairly easily fixable and are more of an annoyance than anything. What I ran into most were the following...

1. The game loading with no audio. Had to just shut down and load the game again. Eventually it fixed itself. Nothing else I tried solved the problem 100% of the time.

2. The game crashing when loading a save. This happened maybe a half a dozen times. The fix was to start a new game, play just long enough to save. Save the game, exit, and your old save would work. An annoying but not game breaking problem. I just used the bottom save slot for this. It took, maybe, 2 minutes to get through the dialog and save and all that. Easy but annoying.

3. Some graphical glitches. Nothing major here, nothing that made the game unplayable. Placing the black gem on my scepter at the end of the game was the worst issue I had.

4. Camera seemed a little overly energetic.

5. The map markers for quests didn't always appear in the proper places. Thankfully that's not a huge deal as the quests always gave you locations in the text.

6. Icons on the compass for items and breakables, etc didn't rotate with the camera. They always maintained a fixed "north" position. IE they only appeared as they would if you have North at the top of the screen. Again, not game breaking but a little annoying. Just rotate the camera and you can figure it out from there.

7. Cutscene audio was about 200% louder than game audio. I always had to adjust it in the footage I recorded. Not easy on the ears but if you can anticipate it you can work around it.

8. The game crashed on me during game play one time in the Leftover Kingdom when I was just walking around. This is the only time the game crashed for me unexpectedly in the 30 hours I played.

Is it flawless? No. Is it playable? Yes. Is it beatable? Absolutely. Will it be a little annoying having to load the game multiple times to get the sound to play? Sure. But for what the game is priced at I don't see that really being an issue. It's not Cyberpunk here, it's a 15+ year old Wii game ported to the PC which it was never designed to do.

The game still looks, sounds, and plays great.

Świetna Gra, OKROPNY Port

Niestety, mimo dobrych chęci i pomocy samego Durante, Little King's Story na Steamie dalej nie jest idealną wersją tej gry. Strasznie zwalnia poza zamkiem, opcja fullscreen wogóle nie działa, kiedy postacie gadają czasem nie są animowane lub nie słychać i głosów, brak konfiguracji sterowania (defaultowe sterowanie jest strasznie dziwne). I to wszystko w pierwszych minutach gry.

Polecam ją ograć LKS na Dolphinie, leprze kontrolki, mniej slow downu. Polecam teź poczekać na potencjalny fan patch do tej wersji... o ile taki powstanie. Do tego czasu, nie polecam jej kupować, no chyba że chcecie wesprzeć deweloperów.

Still a really frustrating port.
I love Little King's Story for Wii. Its a really strong combination of a Pikmin-style RTS and a city builder with a lot of Love de Lic charm but this port unravels quickly. In 5ish hours it crashed on me 6 times. Sometimes making me repeat up to 30 minutes of gameplay. The weirdest part of this port is that you can set your FPS to 60 but it just makes the game faster making some bosses way harder (or easier) than intended. I got so used to saving every time I returned to the castle but I had a crash immediately after the Duvroc fight and decided no, its just not worth the convenience of playing this on steam.
It's a shame Cing went under, they made some brilliant work, the original game included. Play the Wii version if you can help it and steer clear of this port.

Cute game that has some similarities to Pikmin, but the various crashes it gets ruin the experience.
In particular i've had it crash multiple times on loading a save (for which there is a workaround but it's still annoying), and it crashed after beating a boss.
So sadly i cannot recommend it based on the technical issues it has, and based on the other comments, it's highly unlikely these issues will be fixed at this point.

This was a surprising good, unique and creative game.I played this game on a linux pc with a playstation 2 controller.

I will let the in deep review for other people and I will basically focus on the linux experience.

The game plays out of the box in linux and I didn't experience any killer bugs that people mentioned in the forums (like savegame corruption or not hearing audio during boss fights) and I completed the game successfully.
The only major annoyance was that the videos didn't play out of the box in linux, but one can fix that easily with a couple of commands (check my notes on protondb).

Also the launch window settings screen is misleading! Be careful to not select "Skip Intro Movies" as that will not only skip the intro videos but ALL videos in the game!

For using a PS2 controller you must choose "Generic Xinput" as controller method at the launch window settings screen, and you must also enable and configure "steam input" through steam. I have read that 30 FPS should also be selected to avoid bugs during gameplay.

I found some minor graphic glitches during gameplay (like in game fonts) but I am not sure if this is just a linux problem.

Also I found it a bit disappointing that this game does not run well on a regular HDD, and a SSD should be used, otherwise there will be noticeable frame drops when loading large areas or even when the music changes.

Otherwise this is a great game that will work well on Linux through proton (I used 7.0-6). Recommended!

I'll have to update this once I complete the game another time!

I played this originally on the Wii. I still think it's a really fun and unique game. In a short sum of the plot/game play, you play as a newly made king who goes about growing his kingdom, defeating bosses for "world domination", and gaining princesses as you manage and command your troops to do specific jobs. The cut scenes are really charming with a effect on em making them look messily painted.

The achievements are alright, a lot of them you'll get just by playing the game naturally. Though a few are a bit up there such as having some achievements for completing the game on each difficulty (I believe there is four difficulties without double checking atm) For the paintings, I'm sure they'll be the most annoying achievement you'll try for. If you're ever stuck on what to do to collect the paintings on trees, children can climb trees! You can have your citizens marry in the church, only if they like each other (bit hard to tell, but gathering up citizens and sending them all in should net you a few marriages). There also seems to be a glitch where you can freeze at cheering the newly weds. You might encounter your saves not loading or coming up black screen. Make sure to keep around three saves slots and just keep booting.

Though some aspects are a bit annoying. I've noticed that sometimes when I boot up the game it'll stay on a black screen frozen, though this has only happen a few times and is easily fixed with just restarting the game. There's some weirder happenings in the game, like images being stretched when you are picking images to display in your castle, the game randomly crashing once you summon your royal guards (only happened to me once), text will sometimes stay stuck on the screen instead of despawning (I've only noticed this on daily announcements and not on any other text so far), and there's a weird thing about the corn stalks the corn seems to be floating sideways and not attached. There's still the annoying aspects of troops falling of ledges at times and getting stuck until you go get them or them not following you up stairs correctly.

In all, I can't recommend the game enough! It's really charming and honestly one of my most favorite games.

I played this on Steam Deck and loved it but read on as there are still issues in playing it on Deck and I have stated some fixes for the best experience I could get.

The game with no issues is an absolute masterpiece and one of the greatest ever made and I don’t say that lightly. I wish it was at 100% overwhelmingly positive on Steam because the game is that good.

A sequel won’t happen but it is deserving of one. People compare the game to Pikmin. Although I’ve only ever heard people that compare it to Pikmin say that this is the superior game and I’m in complete agreement.

This port/playing on the steam deck isn’t without its faults unfortunately. A lot of the negative reviews are simply down to the port. There have clearly been improvements and do the below to enjoy on deck:-

Comparability:-
Don’t use default as some/all cutscenes won’t play. Instead download and select any version of Proton GE eg GE-Proton7-10. Doing this will mean the cutscenes will play albeit without audio. To fix the audio then copy and paste the below into launch options:-

Launch Options:-
GST_PLUGIN_FEATURE_RANK=protonaudioconverterbin:NONE %command%

From the games own launch menu selection:-
Select 30fps (don’t choose 60fps as doing so will prevent progress due to a few glitches at stages throughout the game)
Texture Resolution = Medium (this is in fact the highest setting as the Medium is the High option and the High option is the medium)
Invert Camera = ticked (this is in fact normal camera rather than inverted)

The game itself has plenty of laugh out loud moments. Art and character design is 10/10. Characters with personality. Building an army of different characters. Expanding your kingdom. There’s a lot of choice. The fan art collectibles are a fun touch. The soundtrack is outstanding. Seriously the game is something special

Great game, only bug that annoys me in gameplay is broken minimap with object locations. Ui scaling would be nice too, but the minimap's funcitonality is what I say is the only weakness of this port atm. Prob my favorite game from the wii, glad they did it justice after a poor release.

Excellent game, terrible port.

Overall experience remained good because the game itself is very fun (even in 2023 it made me hella hooked right from the start), still it sucks to be anxious on important moments feeling a hurry to save ASAP because there's a chance the game will immediately close itself any second. Since I enjoyed the game, I can barely accept putting effort into minimizing the game problems by lowering graphics, relaunching the game once in a while, etc.

Usually I would tryhard and go for 100% achievements, but for this bugged port I don't see myself willing to do much more than minimally completing the game once.

Edit: nvm just got 100% achievements, as much I could swear I would not do it I actually went through everything. As bad as the port is, I was able to eventually handle like 95% of the problems. What I did was basically lowering the FPS to 30, quality to low and resetting the game every 50 minutes, as by doing that the crashes were completely gone even after dozens of hours.

Little King's Story is my one of my favorite games. I was so excited to get to play it again (and without a wii remote), that I was honestly willing to pay full price without any graphic updates. All I needed was the game I fell in love with to work.

Too bad it doesn't...
I've tried to play it several times, and every time I have run into a different game breaking glitch.
I think if it was just the occasional crashes and odd graphics glitches I'd just accept it, but I keep having saves corrupted, enemies glitch and get stuck to my character, or even get stuck in the castle before the game even starts.
I'd be thrilled if this was just a glitchy game, but instead it's broken and unplayable

Unfortunately I cannot recommend this particular port of Little King's Story, despite the efforts put in previously to bring it up to a workable state. The game itself is super charming and I would love to continue playing, but I have been hit by the recurring 'game fails to load save' glitch wherein you are hit with a black screen upon hitting 'Continue' at the main menu.

The negative review does not reflect the game itself, just this particular port of it, as a warning to other potential buyers.
