A hidden gem of spacesims. If it would be more popular, newton-based space physics would be the norm
This is a fantastic classic space game. the story is captivating and you will not regret the purchase, It's hard but once you get in you will be amassed at how well they did it back in the day.
Well, I WAS interested in trying this unique-looking space sim, but it doesn't have a single-player campaign included in this version for some insane reason. WTF.
This game still rocks.
This has silky smooth handeling, and the best newtonian physics i have ever experienced in a space sim.
this works fine with modern hotas as my vkb hotas, you just need the mod for simple ini file changes, or the patience to edit the ini yourself.
all mods are just done moving the zip file to the game mod folder, no complex crap.
No cd mod is also avalible.
Loved this game when it was released, and it still holds up...
I-War comes from a different time and stands proud next to Freelancer in my heart in terms of the fun I had.
All my playtime comes from the CD version: Steam was just the platform I picked it up again "just in case" in a sale (and so I never forgot!). I gather though that Steam's version has some issues - so might not be the best to grab (just to get the time to write this review I was sat on the "insert CD" screen, for example, so there's that).
Anyway - if you enjoy narrative space sim games that give you freedom enough that while you have a story to follow, you *also* absolutely will not be babysat as it pats you on the backside and says "have at it, kid"? You'll like I-War is where it's at. Sure, visually speaking this won't blow you away, but it has the visual charm of early noughties cinematics and style.
Where I came to fall in love is that over a decade after release on a re-play I found the modding community - where you can absolutely improve things with things like Custom Jafs (tired of him talking? Also want him in a *Superfrieghter* with tons of capacity while you *YARR* your way around spacelanes? Get this!) and more.
It's these kinds of things that made me fall in love all over again - it's not just something you can blitz through as there's an element of skill to actually progress and beat, but once done once? You'll absolutely want to do it again with the new knowledge, take your time more and build things up.
Heck I'd ply the spacelanes for ages just for the entertainment value of Jafs bringing in haul after haul, then on saving my game to clock off for the session admire the wealth of stuff I was now going to either sell or have available in future.
When you get far enough through to unlock all the ships and finally be in a position to get your two AI fighters (piloted by your crewmates) on the largest ship? It's sheer joy. I-War felt ahead of it's time, leaving me hoping for decades now that we'd see a sequel at some point, a continuation or at least in-universe spinoff. Who knows, maybe someday.

Five minutes after getting keybinds from internet: huh, interesting, very sophisticated flight system...require more time to handle it.
10 min after entering the base: What? my grandma is a space pirate? I am Kane Blueriver driving Swordbreaker?
Best space game ever
A work of love for its year. But unplayable at the moment. If you have no CD Drive on your machine you have to install an unofficial patch to play singleplayer. (oh and there is no multiplayer whatsoever too) Starmap is a mess.

Now that it's 2023 and there are some community fixes for the most glaring mission bugs - plus the availability of many mods created over the years over at the I-War2 fansite - it is time for me to revisit the Hoffer's Wake system.
great space combat, unlike anything else
Honestly this game when it come out in box, many years ago was a marvelous game, with a lot of story, different ships, your base, and a lot of hours of pleasure. To that original one I gave 10/10
But the one available on Steam is just a piece a crap and I am nice, where they disabled the possibility to play alone and it is totally unplayable, I give to that one 1/10, I am very disappointed with that one
20+ years have passed since its release, but it's still one of the best space sims ever made.
I recently played Edge of Chaos, and I must say it's the best space simulation game I've ever played. The game's flight model is absolutely superb, offering a realistic and engaging experience that truly immerses you in the game.
What really sets Edge of Chaos apart, however, is the captivating storyline. The game is full of twists and turns, and the characters are so well-written that I found myself emotionally invested in their struggles and triumphs.
One of the most memorable moments of the game for me was the pirate base located in the asteroid.
Overall, Edge of Chaos is an outstanding game that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a space simulation with a gripping story and exceptional gameplay mechanics. If you're a fan of the genre, you won't be disappointed!
This game was FAR ahead of it's time. Looting piles and piles of cargo crates, save game, do a mission or two to unlock more market options, spend tons of cargo getting schtuff for your ship, go back to looting again. Great loop and the storyline is pretty decent considering the era it is from.
Definitely shows it's age. Lots of finicky control issues and whatnot. But full physics capabilities with flight assist off is fantastic! Boost to high speeds, missile launch an enemy while passing them at near light speed, turn around, use FTL drive to drop all built up speed down and turn to full standard thrust forward back towards the enemy. FANTASTIC fun and realistic, even if the enemy doesn't use the tactic. Also, if you're ever in bad trouble, pull all power from weapons to shields and engines, and just max boost thrust till you're far far far away, rebuild shields and repair stuff, then head back in!
Blast from the past, so much atmosphere and its still quite pretty visual and with the music .
I've never really gotten that far in this but always been fully immersed.
The save system completely rips you out though, completely.
Makes it feel a bit of a rogue like at times with the risks you take in procuring more and more loot.
it may say that i have less than half an hour in this game, but i have lost YEARS to this game.. it is extremely amazing for its time and even to today's standards still huge in my eyes for map size and playable area... if the company would msg me and say they were remaking this game id be one of the first to buy it all over again!!

I loved this game back in 2001 and still loving it today.
It is a space opera/action/tactical/shooter/space sim/rpg ultimate combo game with good story and strong immersion.
I was hoping for a third installment for years.
The graphics are outdated by today's, but its still decent and a great classic.

Il est très dommage que Steam et aussi les autres plateforme de téléchargement ne propose pas les langues existantes avec les jeux.
Ce n'est jamais l'audio qui prends le plus de place sur l'installation des jeux.
Un gros effort à faire de ce coté la de la part des plateformes de jeu, éditeurs etc...

No CD Fehler nach wie vor nicht behoben... aber auf Modernen Systemen läuft die Retail Version ohne Probleme F14.6 man benötigt nur den Mod für den Scriptfix und somit lässt sich das Spiel toll spielen.
Es gibt aber einen No CD Fix auf der I-War 2 Internetseite
Empfehlung: custom Jaffs Mod (da fliegt er dann mit einem Frachter statt der kleinen badewanne zum container holen)
Still brilliant after all these years, even with the bugs, and there are a few, its well worth playing this game if you like space sims, and the way the ships fly in space is just brilliant, not like flying an aircraft at all.

A very fun but very flawed Elite-like experience.
The original game is amazing. Steam version has lots of unnecessary bugs. The game is available on other platforms. CD/DVD on start can be bypassed by creating a virtual disk from any iso (the game start fine after). Compatibility settings to XP and run as Administrator have to be set on game shortcut (see other comments). But finally the game crashes. In the end is just not worth it to buy from here. Steam quality check bar is just too low.
This is a once great hidden gem of a space combat sim. With expansive gameplay, upgradable ships, cool space piracy, Newtonian space combat, it's a recipe for success.
Sadly the game has aged and there's problems. Changing to UHD resolution fails and resets you to SVGA 800x600. It's an unfortunate problem that should be fixed, or better, the game really could use a remaster because it's a hidden classic. I don't get a maybe option here, and because the game doesn't display properly at high resolutions, it falls below the standard for making a game recommendable. A regrettable thumbs down for a once great game.

Considering its age, the game has aged incredibly well. Excellent game back then and it still is now. Recommend playing with a joystick!

It even runs perfectly on my Windows 10 new age PC in 2020, nineteen years after its release.
Ofcourse for an old game like this to run on a new PC there are a few hoops you might have to jump.

Game starts in low res and as soon as you choose the correct resolution for your monitor the screen reaches out of bounds and touches your desk :-p, you crash exit the game and then you restart just to find that not even the mouse works because as soon you move it it dissapears. Screen out of bounds, mouse dissapearing ... mess

Solution:
First
After instalation create a shortcut on your desktop to point to the game .exe "loader.exe"
Path in my case "D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos\bin\release\loader.exe"
In the target box of the shortcut use the path ending with the argument -ac iwar2.icGame -dl 3
so the whole target should display:
"D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos\bin\release\loader.exe" -ac iwar2.icGame -dl 3
in my case
and then make some very quick compatibility adjustments to the shortcut
Set it to "Run this program in Compatiblity mode for Windows XP SP3"
Check * "Disable fullscreen optimizations" and also "Run this program as an Administrator"
Click ' Change DPI setting button and and on that click both options given
click ok and then again ok and voila
there you have it.
The above should resolve the issues with choosing the correct resolution and any mouse dissapearing issues.
After that use your modified link to start the game and avoid the steam menu sellection as it will run the game "as is" with no compatibility settings that you just made.
I use 1920 X 1080 and it's top to bottom left to right, perfect
cons to this method: The game runs perfectly but is not measured by the steam site. (Minor for me) Will probably solve it in the future
And then (or maybe before) you focus your attention on the fact that the game asks for you to insert a disk or ales there is no single player mode and other cool stuff.
There I did some research on this. It was an easy fix too!
This game is heavily codely depended on the existence of a real cd/dvd player hardware device to play. But actually all the files and the videos are allready there installed in the game folder. But seriously it still asks for a play disk. Actually it doesnt care what kind of a play disk. Because it is allready patched and it just wants cookie
SO give it the cookie it asks for.
Solution
If you dont have a CD/DVD Drive to load any type of Disk into it in order for it to play run any iso emulator programm like WinCDEMU or your favorite emu and load any "iso" disk available in you pc. Like a linux Puppy.iso (my case).
All should spring to life when you run it again.
There will be a single player mode as all of the other game cool choices
Its good to have a joystick arround.

The graphics are still holding pretty good minus the videos wich now might seam a bit outdated

One of my favorite games back when it was released. I bought this game hoping to play it again but it will not work on a modern OS (Windows 10). There is absolutely NO single player option unless you download a third party tool and ISO. Also, it appears that there is a bug in the second act even if you do get it to work. Really crappy...

I've had this game for years, still got loads of old mods for it, it's full Newtonian physics, and looks really good on modern hardware, some of the ships, I think one's called the Storm Petrel, are really good, fly tight. pack a punch. If you like space opera it's a great old game.
Bought this game out of nostalgia. Was pretty ahead of its time when released. Need to find mission guides online to help out with some stuff, but overall it should definitely be on anyone's radar.
Well I could go on about this game for paragraph after paragraph if had too (my friends would testify to that).
But honestly the best way I can keep this short is to tell you I am not exaggerating, really I am not. What I am about to tell you is straight up truth:
This is a MUST PLAY THIS GAME, one of those everyone who has liked space games of any kind MUST play. It's in the same league as Freespace 2, Freelancer, Tie-fighter and so on. It is a MUST!! you MUST play it. Yes it's old, yes it's got a Newtonian physics engine (not fully) and yes it can be hard in parts. But... don't die without having known this game.
Btw as with many of these old games you can ignore my play time, I have finished the base game probably 10 times before steam, not even thinking about Gold Rush or Torn Stars. Anyway that doesn't matter, PLAY this game before it's too late.

I was concerned to read the odd negative review saying it doesn't work out of the box (so i downloaded and dived in). I've actually got the original on CD but got the steam version as i had issues with the original game.
This works seemingly fine for me on win 7
I've tried both multiplayer and the campaign.
re: multiplayer. I only tried searching for an internet game. The browser appeared to work and was searching (obviously didn't find anything). I tried hosting too and an MP game started fine.
re: solo. Again, literally just ran it. The initial cut scene is a touch pixelated but actually looks ok, given the age of the game and how horrible cutscenes from other old games can be (dreadful textures, low resolution, etc). I literally just ran it until my cockpit appeared and i moved the ship around a bit. joystick (thrustmaster hotas x) seems to work ok. NOT THOROUGHLY TESTED THOUGH.
finally, i only did a superficial bit of research into issues with this game. It sounded like you might need an .ISO and a virtual CD drive.
Another comment mentioned about needing an optical drive. The game notes on steam say you need an optical drive.
I've got a physical CD drive and DIDN'T need a cd or .ISO / virtual drive for the game to run, though the odd negative review listed the test OS as Win 10. I'm not clear if the OS is a factor or not.
So, in summary, game runs fine for me on win 7. I do have an optical drive though, which might be part of the DRM / anti piracy code.
Game really actually looks ok for a 2001 release (and i play both old and new games - everything from xwing alliance with modded models and quake 4, to MW 2019)
The highest resolution i found was 1080p (1920x1080). There is a 1440x900 option too (but NOT 1440p).

Yes, it IS an old game, but Steam should not be selling this game simply because it does not run out of the box after installing. ( I am using latest version of Windows 10 OS).

Great game, its somewhat free form open during the story campaign, after I recall it got very open with the gear you had in the campaign, may have been a mod, I dont recall. It used to have a bunch of mods back in the day, i'd love to see a workshop for this game on steam to get them all back. Newtonian physics is a thing in this game... do keep that in mind, you will drift, and I dont mean drift if you take a turn wrong, no your gonna drift a little, if you turn hard, your gonna drift a lot, it isnt perfect by any means, but its not your average space sim. You can disable computer assist and keep going in one direction while facing another quiet easily, or to control your thrusters manually. Keep this in mind for combat. Used to be fairly competitive in PvP back in the day also. Glad to see it and its predecessors on Steam. Great games all of them. I'd love to see a 3rd.

Where is the story mode?
A great game that I spent more than 500+ hours on when it came out. It has aged since it was released, but still a game I recommend "with a mod or two" if you like:
-Flying thru a populated "NPC" space.
-Anwsering distress calls, defending of raders. (And if theres any cargo drop, eighter by the enenmy or by you "accedently" hitting the trader ) you just pick it up by the help of Jaf.
-An interesting storyarc.
Bare in mind that its an old game, and might not have the best controlls, but you can still mod a few thing
All in all a great game, just hope I have more time to play it this time around!
this is a great game and a shooter. Unfortunate the game is flawed on steam. The problem is the speed at which the game goes, in fact i cannot get through the rings. If anyone has a patch to the speed please let me know. I have win 10 64 bit update 1903. I have an amd processor 8 core running at 4.7 gigaherts. 32 gigs of ram and a nvidia card Geforce Gtx 1070 TI and sound 7.1 surround.

This was an excellent game back in it's day and would still hold up today if it didn't constantly crash in the mid game. Just like the original IWAR, it crashes when jumping through L-points, and there are no patches to be found.
Worse still, they failed to put a disclaimer in the sale option that you would be required to pay a third party for a virtual cd/dvd drive to play it. You can get temporary "trials" for one, but you can only use those for so long. They should have INCLUDED one in the software package for this game if they're going to charge any more than FREE for it... Borders on THEFT in my mind.
Still a very immersive and nice to play spacegame. One of the best of it's kind in my opinion.
I tried to like this game, I really did. But in the end, it's terrible because it does not deliver what it says it does: it's not an open space sim, it's a heavily scripted action adventure game.
The game is more like an adventure game where you have to jump through hoops to get to the next cinematic. Any attempt to be creative or deviate from the norm either does not work at all or just bugs the game. For example: there is a mission where you have to cut a habitation module away from a platform to isolate the police squad inside and steal a ship. I tried sneaking in with all my systems down (since it's a supposed 'feature' of the game). Managed to get close, but then the cutting droid used to cut the module does nothing. Basically, you have to follow exactly the sequence the developper want for the drone to iniate the cutting: get in the system, says exactly the right thing, fly straight to the module. So boring.
I've been flying the same borring ship for about 30 hours now. You do not have access to other ships, at least not for a very long time. Your initial cool looking interceptor gets confiscated early on and you'll end up flying the ugliest space bucket ever for a very, very long time. Customisation is a joke: you buy what is available in the market, basically you are offered random upgrades that vary from pitiful to useless. I've never had to buy missiles or gatling ammo once ever, don't know if it's a bug, but it removes a lot of the immersion and usefulness of trading and therefore pirating. Never had to use the Manufacturing system ever. It really feels like an action space shooter rather than an immersive space sim where you have to manage and refit your ship.
Combat is boring. Once you figure out the one and only way to dogfight, you just repeat this forever. It's basically just WASD with a joystick and in this sense feels more like an FPS than a space sim. Battles devolve around you straffing around clueless opponents forever. Missile spam is aids and there's not much you can do about it but run until they all explode.
The weapons are wildly imbalanced, for example rockets are useless and the gatling is op. I remember taking on a station with a gun platform. A full clip of rockets (designed specifically for static implacements) would take about 20% of the gun platforms HP whereas the gat can destroy it with about half a clip. The remote bombs are a joke: as soon as you shoot, you are 'teleported' in the bomb to fly it, which is neat except no one is flying your ship anymore!! You'll get shot down real quick, and since stealth does not do anything there is no way to get creative with those. Missiles are slow, weak and miss a lot. The turrets are ridiculously OP, as long as you dont undock them and loose them (which will require you to grind goods for about 5hours just to remanufacture one, you're better off re-loading). Basically, there are very few viable options in battle.
Pirating is fun for a while, but when you realise you can't really use the loot to buy anything useful it becomes pointless. It also tends to devolve in grinding.
As mentioned before, stealth is a joke, despite being touted as a feature: you're supposed to power your systems down to reduce your signature but this has zero usefulness in the game.
Anyways, this game is disappointing for one simple reason: it does not deliver anything it says on the box. repetitive combat, only one ship for a very very long time, laughable ship customisation, no need to buy ammo, scripted, buggy... It's not an open space sim, it's a heavily scripted action adventure game.
Absolute waste of money. First, there's no mouse control, you have to mod it in, which took me about half an hour. Second, there's no way to change the controls or even view them. Oh, and if you use mouse control in windowed mode the mouse will leave the game and if you click the window will disappear. This game shouldn't even be available on steam in this state.
A great game, but there is an unfixable gamebreaking bug(dagda system) in act 2, which stops your progression completely.
Probably hardware/os related, as i don't recall i ever had that issue back in the days.
Burn the money in front of yourself. You will get more for your money.

Another old school space sim... First I-war was a must play in his time.. (with the freespace series..) the second part was as good as the first one and implement a great following to the first story. The Game is old but ok in itself.. Videos are running correctly, game runs correctly. I still have the first one on Big PC Box (Limited edition) and i'm pretty sure that you could rebind keys in the first one... In this game there are no rebindable keys... So that's just makes the game unplayable to me... maybe with a Joystick made for space sims (the game was intended to be played with it at the time) but i don't have one. So i cannot recommend the game in this state.
Great game, runs fine, but no rebindable keys is a pain in the ass for this type of game..
So if basics controls in game suits you and if you can play this way, i recommend a try, because the game in itself is good. But if you are like me and can't cope with it.. i'd recommend to try another game. But in my opinion, players should not have to do such manipulations to have a fully working game they paid for. Try GOG's version, it seems that the patch for controls is integrated in the game, so you can play easily. I don't know why steam didn't kept it (or add it) in this version though.. So that will be a thumb down for me..

after the download and install
you can find a file called resource.zip in the Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos map
this is your game disk so to use it you need to
unpack resource.zip to a map put everything in this map in an iso file using DAEMONTOOL S
after this u can load/mount this iso file using daemontools making your pc thinks youve loaded the needed cd
now you can start the game and you get the single play/story option in menu

While it came out years before the show, this is probably the closest any game has come to capturing the spirit of [i]Firefly[/i].
This is simply the best space-pirate game ever made. It does an amazing job combining a tactile sense of realism - freighters you're stealing from ejecting their supply-boxes into space so your support can tractor-beam them in and take them back to your base - with simplicity and smooth, easy-to-use controls. The game is at it's best when you're just lazily shooting around the galaxy looking for possible heists. The entire universe is dynamic and feels alive, allowing you to predict what sorts of shipments will pass through which gates or arrive at which stations - a mining station, for example, would import supplies and export ore.
And, smartly, the game makes almost all the new technology you unlock for your ships and wingmen be "sidegrades", ways of customizing them for specific missions rather than just numerical increases, so it feels like your capabilities are expanding rather than just keeping up with higher-numbered enemies. This also ensures you never get so strong that you can just do stuff by brute force - you still have to plan out your piracy in individual heists, you just get more tools and more options when doing so.
The game isn't completely perfect. Inexplicably, you have to fiddle with a config file to get mouse controls working (you can find a premade one if you search online; for some reason it was included with the GOG release and not this one.) Additionally, the difficulty of missions is all over the place, sometimes spiking dramatically with no warning, sometimes throwing you softball after softball. Finally, it's possible to bypass a huge chunk of the main quest by accident (if you find yourself in the second part of the galaxy without having really explored the first, you screwed up; there's no way back and you'll have accidentally skipped a large chunk of the game.) Still, given the low asking price today, these are minor issues for a game that captures the core essence of "be a space pirate rebel" so perfectly.
This is once again one of the best sims i have ever played. I loved it 20 years ago and it still gets me everytime i load up. The graphics hold up very well, They are simple but do what they are supposed to do. Let you play the game not go wow look at the graphics. I'm spending far to many hours playing this.
Save the game after a mission then go pirate stuff for a while, Save again and then do a plot mission. Have fun.

Dagda Jarvis mission and Wolfs lair missions finally fixed, You need to download a patch from i-war2.com called EoC Community Patch.
This now makes the game playable again in all it's glory as before on CD version.
V 14.6 update. MCA convoy escort to Toadskin way point. You enter jump point and get sent to somewhere else The mission fails and you explode. That didn't happen in CD version. You have a 50/50 chance to get there. You eventually get into system and the 2 guard ships are almost immune to your guns and missiles, Kill ships first then get the mines.. The mission flies as usual after the convoy arrives.
Big map a lot of opportunities and a lot of fun. Great game for its age. I played it in my childhood and it haves some mods. Well sadly sometimes it haves alpha bugs, BUT there are savegames or patches on the dev site.
One of my all-time favorites, still feels great to play after 15 years. I was concerned that it may not work properly under win10, but it works perfectly with graphic settings maxed. Highly recommend it!
All time classic with great newtonian physic based gameplay

Почему именно космический симулятор? Космос для человечества до сих пор остаётся загадкой. Ещё неизвестно, когда люди смогут спокойно борздить просторы Вселенной и открывать для себя что то новое в этом наверняка неприветливом, мрачном, поистинне бесконечным пространством, полным тайн и загадок и даже того, что находится за гранью нашего понимания. И потому мы читаем и пишем статьи о этом, рисуем и любуемся артами, снимаем и смотрим документалки, сериальчики, фильмы о том, о чём мы знаем немного, но всё же хотим знать, как можно больше: О космосе. И с недавних (или напротив, весьма давних) пор, с зарождения эры компьюетров, мы получили возможность ещё и создавать видеоигры о бесконечной, но манящей пустоте, ровно как наслаждаться творениями разработчиков в этой сфере. Опустим времена, когда крупица этой манящией пустоты заложилась в нас, в эпоху приставок, с платформерами м стрелялками.
Именно данная игра, позволила мне (да думаю, и не только мне одному) заглянуть в этот таиственный мир за монитором. Это было так давно, но первое прохождение я помню до сих пор: Я начал в неё играть и даже не начав толком тренировочную стадию, смог наконец полноценно окунуться и понять общие принципы игры и управления в ней с клавиатуры, только спустя два-три года. Затем прошёл ещё немного, от силы четверть игры по сюжеты, не смог пройти и забил на неё от досады на полгода (а причина проста: сложности в управлении + баги и родная, не патченная версия лицензионной игры, которая была на двух дисках).
И лишь только тогда, набравшись ещё больше опыта касательно игр, я в течение месяца смог её пройти, и позже, перепроходил раз в год. начну с плюсов, и перечислю всего лишь один горький минус: Нет продолжения у этой игры, и очень жаль.

+ Пиратство и торговля (жаль, всего лишь одна считай профессия в игре, зато какая)
+ разнообразие оружия, акссесуаров к кораблям и множевство самих кораблей (правда, под управлением ИИ лишь; у игрока будет всего лишь несколько кораблей за всю игру, причём, по хожу сюжета, особо вариаций не будет, придётся пересаживаться на что дают, иначе пройти игру будет сложно)
+ Сюжет (Единственное, играйте с оригинальной озвучкой)
+ Квесты (Вряд ли за игру найдётся два идентичных за всю игру)
+ Графика (На тот момент, обгоняет первую и вторую Вселенную икс и Фрилансер)

Like so many this is an all time favorite of mine. But you really do need a joystick.
There were fixes to enable mouse control available onlie but those I have found are way out of date.
One of the devs wanted to include mouse as a standard option and though I like his obliging attitude I feel his bosses got it right because the control requirements make mouse play very, very challenging.
Anyhows, if you can get a joystick (with a hat) up and running you are in for a treat.

Classic Space Sim. Downloaded it after so many years and it's still fun to play. Interface still looks solid despite the age.
Total nightmare to get this game running, and even doing simple things like finding the keybinding to exit the stupid HUD menu thing is impossible. Don't waste your time.
Schade, dass das Spiel nicht auf Deutsch verfügbar ist. Ich hatte es irgendwann mal auf Deutsch und bin jetzt etwas enttäuscht. Dabei ist es gerade im Internet ja wohl überhaupt kein Problem, alle Varianten anzubieten...
Ansonsten: Super, dass ich es wiedergefunden habe. Ich hatte es damals nicht durchgespielt und werde das nachholen.
Why haven't I played this earlier?
The only bad point so far is the controls but I found mod that is very easy to use and it let me set up the controls nicely (I will put the website at the bottom). Using a combination of joystick and joystick now to control the different movements of my ship. Also has a nice mod to improve the cargo ship that collects your plunder.
I almost quit after 2 hours because missiles.
Then....... the feeling you get when you hear the beeping and the woosh as it flies past you while you finish off the aggressor is just a quality moment and doesn't get old. You actually want them to fire missiles just so you can evade them =D.
I'm not even far in but I had to review this, you are literally a pirate holding ships up and taking their cargo. Of course you try to be a nice pirate by not killing them but when I recieved a little sarcasm off some pilot I couldn't resist just lining them up before they could jump away and sent a few missiles thier way.

Looks horribly outdated, but one of the space gems back from to good old days. It's not FreeSpace, but it is great.
I own the first game, and I had a blast playing it. It is what honed my skills in video game piloting, I had heard of a second game but i never had the chance to obtain it till now. It is different but still a lot of fun, the old classics from the first game are still there like the Corvettes and Patcoms, but also new versions of them. Clay is very different in this game from the first, but it does not detract from the enjoyment. He's more melow which 200 years time might do that to a human conscious recorded into a computer. If you haven't played the first one, his character will throw you off as who is this guy and why is he important. I haven't finished this game yet but i'm still holding out hope of finding my old ship from the first game.
Amazing game with hours and hours of play value, Massive universe full of ships to plunder and loot, if you have the guts to go for the big score and pull it off then you will be set for the next big hit.

Excellent game, graphics are still pretty good. A few bugs, i-war2.com has a few mods that help with broken things.
The plot is interesting at first but I do have to admit the tutorial for controls, what little there is, is terrible. When it doesn't even tell you how to switch back and forth between missiles and guns or even HOW to target the nearest enemy....frankly the interface and the game itself was good for it's time, but that was a while ago.
Juegazo, lo jugue en su dia, bien podria ser el simulador espacial de su epoca con mejores fisicas. El control puede resultar ortopedico pero en la pagina oficial hay mods y presets de controles para descargar, el del mando de 360 funciona suficientemente bien para luchar.
Graficamente hoy en dia no creo que luzca muy bien para quien no lo disfruto en su dia y lo recuerda con nostalgia. Yo lo sigo viendo mas que decente pero cualquiera nuevo puede que le ardan los ojos y mas teniendo ahi fuera simuladores como Elite dangerous o Starcitizen (el dia que salga XD). Incluso No man's sky puede lucir mejor.
I've spent more time than I care to admit playing this game & still have a copy of it sitting on my desk. If high-shine graphics come secondary to gameplay for you then I highly recommend this game; don't get me wrong, this game has failings but the gameplay still holds its' own even after all these years.
Excellent space shooter, 1st or 3rd person views with other tactical views available. Worth every penny and more even fo an older game.
Played this game about ten years ago as a kid and I'm happy to say it has aged very well!
Sure, apart from the still teriffic pre-rendered cutscenes the graphics are a bit out-dated and most people these days don't own a joystick, but the gameplay, story, voice-acting and music all make up for it. Also you can play it just fine using a keyboard.
Playing it ten years later I can apretiate how ahead of its time it was. The physics, the open world, even the Mass Effect-like dialogue trees. And it's still the only game I've seen where the distances between planets are realistic. It's not just a cutscene and *zap* you're somewhere else, you actually see the planets and asteroids whizz by you as you travel in FTL speeds.
After a half-hour prologue you'll get your own crew of pirates and then it's off stealing cargo, selling it, upgrading your ships and getting revenge. This game is still good today and a I hiiighly recommend it for anyone who likes space-ship games.

Classic space sim that was way ahead of its time in terms of graphics & gameplay. I'm so happy to see it made it to steam.
While I do enjoy playing this game, even to this day, the one major con is overly political socialist propaganda. It was said when the game first released, and I'll restate it here. The biligerent extreme left nonsense being shoved in players faces Murdered this game, along with its potential.
Being a space sim nut, I can get past it and just enjoy the game. The ease of modding the game is certainly my favorite part. The bulk of the game can be changed with a text editor, making so that rebalancing or going crazy overpower a snap. You'll have to search the web for it, but there is an iwar2 cult out there, still keeping the game, and mods for it alive.
Flightstick Flightstick Flightstick!
Why anyone would want to play a piloting game that doesn't require a flightstick is beyond me. You can mod this game for mouse, but you will be missing out.
Sehr gelungenes Weltraumabenteuer.
Trotz des Alters ist es für mich persönlich immernoch ein bringer.
Grafisch für damalige Verhältnisse sehr schön gemacht und die Spielphysik ist sehr realistisch, was beim Fliegen manchmal für ungeübte Piloten Probleme mit sich bringt.
Im Weltall kann man nunmal keine Bremsen betätigen, also muss man volle Kraft zurück fliegen um zu bremsen und braucht fürs bremsen genau so lange wie für das beschleunigen.
Wenn man aber erstmal den dreh raus halt, läuft alles wie es soll.
Ein sehr großes Problem bei diesem Spiel ist die steuerung...
Entweder Joystick und Tastatur oder nur Tastatur.
Es wird nicht mit der Maus gespielt und es gibt keine Anleitung zur Steuerung welche man selbst herausfinden oder nachgooglen muss.
Die Steuerung ist auch aufgrund des realismus wirklich extrem komplex und belegt fast die komplette Tastatur.
Dafür ist die freiheit im Spiel sowie die Story einfach unglaublich gut umgesetzt und ich habe selten ein Spiel mit solchem potential gesehen.
Fazit:
Die Steuerung macht sehr viel am Spiel kaputt, aber für Leute die gerne mal den Kopf anstrengen und sich reinlesen wollen, ist es perfekt und sie werden voll auf ihre Kosten kommen.
Ein unglaublich gutes Weltraum-piraten-abenteuer in dem man fette Frachtschiffe ausraubt, sich Schlachten mit der Polizei und anderen Piraten und Räubern bietet und Schiffe aufwertet und tuned, sowie mit Schmuggelware handel treibt um an bessere Waffen und ausrüstung zu kommen.
Nicht das beste Spiel, aber ein Sammlerstück und mir persönlich macht es Spaß :)

A great game that holds up very well. It's one of the rare occasions where you can play as a pirate in space. Unfortunately I witness some graphic glitches and stuttering if there are many ships on the screen. Maybe it's because of Win 10. Who knows. It's still playable though.
For those who own a boxed version: You can copy all language files over to the Steam folder and your game will be completely localized including video and audio.
Everyone who is spoiled by games like Freelancer should search for a file called "mouse.ini". With it, you can play the game with mouse and keyboard. That works surprisingly well with a mouse set around 1600 dpi.
Get it and enjoy one of the best space sims out there! If it's not too hard for you ;)
Well I don't see this mentioned anywhere in game description or forums, but it appears it's only multiplayer only. No single play...bummed (after the fact).
i like this game because its a video game, which was a pleasant surprise.
Important: You need to manually set your controls to keyboard only if not using a joystick. You can do this in the options menu.
I am extremely glad to see this game on Steam as well. I have played this many times since its release and each year I hope to play it at least once. I own several copies, on disc as well as digital. It would be great to see an I-War 3 project revitalised, because the series is too good not to have sequels.
While you don't need to play the previous games at all to enjoy the story (mostly unrelated to the prequels), I recommend all the games. They are space simulators packed with action and adventure. The campaigns are all great, diverse, and challenging. The story itself is quite nice: you are trapped in an ever-escalating war between Marauders, Corporations, and independents of the cluster. While employing diplomacy and weapons to get through it and make yourself a living, you get to uncover some other surprising mysteries of the universe. Compared to other space simulators, I feel that the quality of any I-War game in the series is much higher. I was not able to enjoy any other space-related games since playing the series. While I-War 2 may be difficult to master at first, once you do the gameplay is very rewarding to say the least. The game was very well built as well: it natively supported widescreen, at least 5.1 audio, and runs flawlessly on modern hardware. In short, my favourite game of all time.
This game is not your average space shooter where you just fly and blow up things in space. It uses Newtonian physics, so you will have to learn how to steer your ship in space and when to accelerate and decelerate. Just like in real space. :-)
This may not be for everyone and I can respect that - but I love the kind of realism this game gives me.
I also recommend playing this game with a controller or even better, a real joystick. That's what it was intended to be played with.
I-War 2 has its flaws. The missions are easy at the beginning, but after a while you will get lost without instructions. Also, the starmap is horrible and your pirate buddy Jafs is constantly nagging. All of these can be solved with mods or a bit of reading, though! :-)
The game may also have some bugs if you play it on later systems than XP, but these can also be solved.
(Edit- year 2022: Make sure to install the newly-released community patch that fixes two very massive mission script bugs!)
