Yea... it just kinda sucks in general. The writing is bad. The voice acting is bad. The art is bad. You can't customise character portraits. The character portraits are bad. The combat is bad. No Steam Workshop support. It's just not very good.
能玩，但实在没耐心玩下去，除了画质和音乐还算可以，其它地方全都简陋无比：游戏的地牢场景一成不变（上一个见到如此素材复用的DRPG还是1990年的巫术6）；角色的属性/技能不但种类贫乏、甚至连加点都没有（仿佛玩到了前几代勇者斗恶龙）；游戏的画面和操作主打写实，然而放出来的法术居然无法远程攻击，观感极度割裂（比DOS时期的魔法门都不如）；作为一个即时制游戏竟然没有动作快捷键，所有攻击施法全靠鼠标，战斗时眼睛必须一刻不停地盯着最下方的按钮等待CD轮番结束（我目光停留在怪物身上的时间不到5%）；不仅是战斗，事实上整个游戏就不支持设置键位，更牛逼的是它连键位都没告诉你。总而言之这是一个纯纯的用Unity商城资源拼接出来的练手玩具，也是少有的能让我无力继续但有力吐槽的游戏。

-Combat inintéressant, pas de kiting possible, juste un face tank bourrin où on clique sans réfléchir, pas de strat possible.
-Pièges non détectables et qui one shoot EN PAGAILLE. Sauvegarder TRES souvent.
-Maps couloirs inintéressantes et riquiquis (8 maps minuscules, mention spéciale pour la 6ème, torchée en 20 min chrono).
-Equilibrage au fraise, pas de choix réel de développement de vos personnages.
-Littéralement aucune histoire...
-Mono tile du début à la fin: mur vide, même mur avec un peu de lierre et même mur avec un peu de poussière.
Bon etc, etc...
Aucune envie de m'attarder plus longtemps sur la review d'un jeu aussi médiocre. On dirait un jeu pour portable péniblement porté sur PC pour du cash grab sans le moindre effort. Je l'ai eu lors d'un Bunble et même là, ça me fait mal aux fesses de l'avoir acheté.

My experience of 'blobbers' (that is, first-person dungeon crawlers where your party moves as a single 'blob') is pretty limited. I've dabbled in a handful but never got to the end of one. It's a genre that I like more in theory than in practice - although I like the idea of them, I find many of them too long, too punishing, or both.
Enter Heroes of the Monkey Tavern, which captures most of the key aspects of a good blobber (including both non-trivial combat and some environmental puzzles) but streamlines the whole thing. In some ways this is a bad thing - you choose your characters' classes but after that have no say in what happens when they gain levels - but mostly works out as a net positive, at least for me.
You only ever have quite a small number of abilities and consumable items. Combat is mostly one-to-one (or one-to-blob, at least) with none of the ridiculous being mobbed by 396 enemies that you get in some games (that's not an exaggeration either). While the game isn't easy and it does make you work for some of your wins, with even routine grunts presenting a credible danger to your party, it's not so difficult than even an inexperienced novice like me can get through it with some effort and cunning cheese tactics. It also has an easy mode (which I probably should have used, in hindsight).
A playthrough clocked in at just under 8 hours for me, thereby managing to avoid not only excessive difficulty but excessive length too. Is it a classic of the genre? No, probably not. But not every game has to be.
What it does manage to be is a mostly enjoyable few hours of first-person dungeon crawling that's accessible enough for people who haven't spent countless hours honing their skills in the likes of Wizardry.
I'm an old head unc and I have to admit this is the first time I've ever played a dungeon crawler of the type. I have to leave a positive review since it was a completely new experience so I might be biased. It's short, sweet and what I feel a good introduction to the genre. I don't get the negative reviews criticizing the fleeing? It's a good game mechanic. Every fight is to the death, you have to face it head on and always be prepared.
That being said the big negative for me is that it's all too similar. The secrets are almost always a torch or pushing a stone in the wall. The traps are always some lion heads spitting fireballs or spikes coming through the floor but they get progressively more difficult, the enemies are goblins, lizardmen , orcs very stereotypical. Same strategy for all of them. The only thing that really changed were the walls so after the halfway point now secrets are more difficult to find. If it was going to be like that it needed more variety or depth.

Short simple dungeon crawler, I liked it ^^
Nice visuals, for normal the difficulty was okay, although I cannot imagine not having a healer. I also liked not having to deal with levelling up and picking skills as it is pre-designed for each class.
The only thing I struggled with was the spell management - could not drag and drop onto the character in the lower bar, but only in the inventory.
The dev of this game is very responsive and I hate to give a game a negative review but I feel I need to warn people off from this one.
The healing system, combat, story and really most of the game needs some fine tuning. It is only around 5-6 hours long but by hour 3 you're going to want out.
I had to use the rest function to heal my characters after almost every combat. I have heard the priest can help some with this. But I had the paladin and it was impossible to use their healing magic in a faster method than just pressing z and watching the same screen you've seen a hundred times. You do slowly heal but often not fast enough for your next encounter. I bet I spent 20-30 minutes of playtime waiting for my characters to heal. Come on now! Imagine if in D and D you had to long rest after every fight with a single enemy.
The story is basically nonexistent as well. You get 2 minutes of poorly voiced dialogue at the beginning and that's it.
The combat becomes very repetitve. You are going to be spamming the same attacks over and over again. Hoping the enemy just runs out of hp before you.
I want to encourage the dev to keep making games because this was almost there but I ended up not enjoying my time with it for the reasons listed above

マップも面白味が無い。特に6Fには閉口した。クノッソスの迷宮というテーマがあるにせよ、壁延ばしアルゴリズムで自動生成したような迷路がフロア全体に広がっている。
アイテムは大別して三種しかない。装備品・ポーション・鍵、である。
細かく分類するにしても、ポーションは2種、鍵は2～3種しかない。装備品は流石にいくつか種類があるが、マジックアイテムなどはない。ユニーク武具でも、ステータスバフの効果があるだけである。遠距離武器は弓しかない。
そして極め付けは、戦闘システムである。
他のレビューでも指摘されているように、Dungeon Master系のゲームでありながら、本作では「立ち止まって正面から殴り合う」ことが推奨されている。敵の正面から移動したら「逃走」ペナルティとしてHPが減る。ボス戦に至っては戦闘に入ったら移動不可で、推奨どころか強制である。
もちろん本家Dungeon Masterでも、後継にして名作Legends of grimrockシリーズにしても、立ち止まって殴り合う戦闘は起こりうる。しかしそれは可能な限り回避すべき事態である。特に高難易度ではそうなったらほぼ負けであり、そうでなくとも多大なリソース消費を覚悟しなくてはならない。
なのでいかに正面からの殴り合いを避け、アイテムや魔法、そしてプレイスキルを駆使して敵の攻撃を食らわず自分の攻撃だけをヒットさせるか。それを模索するのもDungeon Master系ゲームの醍醐味である。
その醍醐味をこのゲームはオミットし、単調な殴り合いに固定してしまっている。
上に書いたようにアイテムは三種しかない。戦闘中に使えるアイテムはポーションだけである。つまり回復だけである。ボムやフォースフィールド、時止めといった要素は無い。
戦闘は武器アイコン（もしくは拳、魔法アイコン）をポチポチとクリックするだけである。移動しないのでWASDキーに手をかける必要も無い。
最初の戦闘から、ラスボスまで、ずっとこうである。
もちろん、そういったシンプルさを好む人がいることは否定しない。
しかし、Dungeon MasterやLegends of grimrockに脳を焼かれたようなゲーマーには、このゲームは非常に物足りないだろう。
ユーザー制作ダンジョンすらやり尽くして、ここいらで少し味変がしたい、と思ったプレイヤーにはオススメ出来るかもしれない。

Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is quite classical dungeon crawler. Strong role playing experience, party in dungeons killing enemies and looting treasures, Story on beginning is absolutely hilarious.
Battling with monster and bosses works as in any grid based dungeon game. Playable and fun. And you can smite them with classical fireballs too.
Not best dungeon crawler, but experience I would recommend.

If you're a fan of the first Legend of Grimrock and you've grown tired of playing mods with the same tileset, this game is for you. The game isn't long and it's simpler in all aspects from mechanics and progression to puzzles and map layouts, but it's still pretty fun. Dungeons are filled not just with monsters, but with secrets and traps, atmosphere is eerie, graphics are good and the music is great.
One common misconception I see in a lot of reviews is that you're forced to fight enemies head-on, because they damage you when you try to move. That is simply not true. Enemies can attack you only when they've finished moving, so you absolutely can lure them into wider spaces and then strafe and attack, while evading damage. Only few bosses lock you in a fight, and this is where you'll need those potions you saved up.

No se trata de un juego memorable, sólo es un intento de seguir la estela dejada por The Legend of Grimrock, quien unos años antes se atrevió a recuperar con mucho éxito las obsoletas mecánicas del rol clásico, moviéndose por cuadrículas.
Sin embargo, el juego está bastante entretenido y nos ofrece todo lo que se puede esperar de estos juegos, combates, tesoros, trampas, interruptores, equipamiento, niveles y atributos que, eso sí, se desarrollan de forma automática.
El arco de dificultad está bien medido (al menos en el nivel normal que es el que jugué) y, quitando un par de combates contra varios adversarios a la vez que son un verdadero reto, te permite acabar en juego en un par de días, sin tampoco tener la sensación de luchar contra enemigos debiluchos.
Echo de menos poder deshacernos de muchos artículos que ocupan un lugar en el inventario desde el principio del juego, pero sin utilidad ninguna pasada la mitad del mismo, así como un cambio de armas o magias más ágil que ayudaría a plantear otras estrategias de juego durante los combates
La banda sonora es medianamente variada y no llega a ser molesta, aunque para nada inmersiva.
Por último comentar que los gráficos son bastante limitados para la época en la que salió el juego y es acercamiento del enemigo final es bastante pobre, con un efecto que podía parecer pasable a principios de siglo, pero que en pleno 2016 da cosita verlo
It's simplistic to the point of being overly simplistic. No tutorial, You don't even know what the skills you're getting do, as there's no hovertip for them. It's extremely easy to die, and as everything regarding loot seems to be predetermined, there's no variation, it's just standing in front of the monster mashing buttons for attack, hoping you won't get plastered. All in all an extremely underwhelming experience, I regret buying this game.

Very basic dungeon crawler that will scratch the dungeon crawler itch for most people. It's not up to the level of Legends of Grimrock, but not many are, but it's a good classic dungeon crawler like the Eye of the Beholder style crawlers. A good indie effort.
It was good fun and takes anywhere from 4-6 hours per dungeon run. I finished it a couple of times to use all the classes.

Simplistically functional the lack of standout features or design results in an overall mild time.
It isnt that good. You get locked into a fight and just stare at the icons waiting to click. No moving around. No combos.. just waiting. The skills you get at level up dont have tool tips so you have no idea what they do. It just wasnt that fun to play.

A fairly decent "dungeon crawler" with a reasonable balance of exploration and fighting monsters plus a fairly basic character progression system, largely based on equipment found. The graphics are pretty good and the music is excellent. No real puzzles to speak of, other than finding keys to open locked doors that allows further progression in the dungeon, but quite a few traps.
It has a good auto mapping system.
It takes a while to get use to the "flee mechanics" where you take damage if you move away from a 'facing' monster. However, you can damage the monster if it is 'side on' to you and you are very quick.
The game seems to be free of software bugs. It took me about 16 hours to complete. The game is also very cheap.

It is simple, quaint dungeon crawler. It doesn't do anything particular amazingly, but it has this simple charm to it. Honestly, I see it as a fun little time killer that feeds the need to fill time.
Сначала хотел оставить положительный отзыв. Но, несмотря на то, что игра короткая, она мне надоела спустя 4 часа и до финала я так и не дошел.
-А еще у меня умер маг на одном из этажей, и воскресить нет возможности, либо загружай последний сейв/1 из 4 возможных сейвов или начинай игру заново. (нет, это не хардкор а гнилая з_лупа)
-На некоторых этажах есть фонтанчики для воскрешения, по 1 шт. и они, как я понял, одноразовые. (хотя в тех же Гримроках были кристаллы лечения/воскрешения и они были многоразовые).
-Вообще, если вы играли в Legend of Grimrock 1-2, то Heroes of Monkey Tavern совершенно нечего вам предложить.
-А еще тут странная боевка. Она реалтаймовая, но при попытках передвижения вам наносится урон. И потому, во время боя вы просто стоите на месте, жмете на иконки оружия как в пошаговых боях от первого лица.
-Музыка тут так себе, окружение неплохое, есть секретки, количество лута умеренное и это хорошо.
-В задачках есть где подумать но они не сложные, в отличие от Гримроков, легко решаются без гайдов.
-Прокачка тут автоматическая, вы выбираете только классы персонажей на старте и вбрасываете по паре тройке очков в статы. Никаких экспериментов с билдами не ждите.
Итог: даже по скидке брать не советую.
sorry, but: NO. The malus for turning away from enemies is such a bad design decision for a game like that, I just can’t get past that. This makes every encounter pretty boring, because yes, I can click on my mouse button every time my attack is ready. Really exciting. It’s a pity, I love games like Beholder, Black Crypt, Grimrock. I adore Dungeon Master. But this one – not too good for me. But – as always – give it a try yourself, you might like it 🥳✌️
I was disappointed. I had this game on my wishlist for years, and a few months ago I finally took it off my wishlist. That should have been then end of it, but then I turned around, against my better judgement, and purchased it.
I really don't have much to say about it except that it was a waste of money and the short amount of time I wasted trying to play it.

Étant admirateur depuis toujours de Dungeon Crawlers, je me devais d'essayer celui-ci, et j'ai été emballé du début à la fin ! Et impressionné par le fait que cet excellent travail soit le fruit d'un seul développeur.
La première chose qui saute aux yeux c'est qu'il a vraiment eu le souci du détail : le jeu est fignolé, très stable, et je n'y ai détecté aucune erreur informatique.
Les graphismes sont magnifiques, avec une belle finesse des textures : les murs sont criants de cynisme, avec notamment un effet de relief parfaitement réaliste. Mention spéciale sur les jeux de lumière superbement rendus. Par exemple, on peut être dans un couloir et voir des ombres se projetant de loin, qui est celles de monstres se déplaçant dans la salle voisine. Ce genre d'effets visuels renforce grandement l'ambiance.
Au niveau sonore, tout "sonne" bien justement :) , surtout les musiques variées et adaptées à chaque situation.
Concernant la façon de jouer, celui-ci représente exactement ce que je recherchais : quelque chose de simple qui plonge directement dans le bain : une création de personnages rapide, mais offrant tout de même de nombreuses possibilités de combinaisons et de classes. Et pour une fois, la classe voleur est vraiment utile dans un jeu de ce type :) par sa détection des pièges et objets cachés. Le jeu ne s'encombre pas de choses qui freinent la progression : pas de gestion de nourriture ni de fatigue, ni poids, etc., et c'est tant mieux ! On est tout de suite dans l'exploration et l'action et c'est tout ce que je demande ;).
Sans être simplistes, les énigmes ne sont jamais bloquantes, tant mieux je n'avais pas envie de rester 3h bloqué devant un mur.
Architecture des niveaux bien conçue aussi, cela aide à se plonger dans l'ambiance. A noter aussi quelques pointes d'humour qui sont toujours bienvenues dans un jeu où l'on doit s'amuser avant tout.
Par son accessibilité, il peut être un premier Dungeon Crawler idéal pour commencer si on veut se mettre au genre.
Pour les connaisseurs, il offre également un challenge intéressant, mais jamais frustrant, avec ses différents niveaux de difficulté.
Vous recevrez 9 cartes de collections sur 15 et 28 succès +/- facilement. Je recommande vivement ce jeu, trop cool.

Перемещение по тайлам ([i]клеткам/полям[/i]) с привязкой к ним же, типичное для партийных данжн краулеров или, как их некоторые знают, [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_crawl#First-person_party-based_dungeon_crawlers]блобберов[/url], это буквально всё, что имеется в игре. Отсутствие многих элементов жанра ставит игрока в весьма комфортные условия, но и лишает каких либо специфичных возможностей. Загадок нет, но есть немало скрытых проходов, а "головоломки" чаще сводятся к перебору рычагов. Экономика отсутствует. Сюжета, можно сказать, нет. В дополнение — игра довольно короткая.
Если глобально — от игрока зависит лишь состав партии персонажей и распределение ресурсов по ходу приключения. Прокачка статична и представляет из себя последовательное открытие новых навыков и перков согласно классам. Задумываться о ней не нужно. Выбранные игроком в начале путешествия характеристики неизменны и влияют на игру лишь впоследствии. Знай себе, что подбирай вещички кому надо, да зелья перекидывай. Ресурсы, по классике, не резиновые и что либо "фармить" попросту не выйдет. Потратили все зелья или не нашли хорошего оружия дойдя до босса? — Что ж. Отправляйтесь дочищать этаж, либо отгружайте сохранение. Фактор ошибки долгосрочной перспективы всегда был нормой для таких игр и даже «Таверна» его не лишена при всей простоте своего исполнения.
Пошаговости тут нет и бои происходят в реальном времени, пусть и с привязкой к тайлам. Это же действительно и для противников, с той лишь разницей, что, по всё той же классике, они не умеют стрейфить ([i]ходить боком[/i]), что в значительной степени ещё более упрощает прохождение и позволяет экономить ресурсы. Боссов же это не касается, поскольку во время боя с ними перемещения исключены вовсе. Именно в эти моменты включается режим менеджмента, будь то вещички, активные навыки или использование зелий и геймплей резко меняет тон.
Казалось бы, всё это можно отнести к минусам, однако складывается впечатление, что именно такой игра и задумывалась — лайтовое приключение в декорациях классических партийных RPG на пару вечеров без особого смысла. Причём, проходя её на высокой сложности заметно сие более явно. Исходя из баланса имеющихся в игре ресурсов, противников и свойств боссов, создаётся ощущение, что разработчики буквально учитывали все эти "пробелы" составляя игру так, чтобы игрок ими пользовался в процессе. Основным препятствием видятся только боссы, для прохождения коих нам дали болванчиков для повышения силы и наполненное инструментами решения боевых ситуаций окружение. Нужно лишь собрать всё это добро и реализовать в решающей схватке. Исключением является конкретный этаж, в каком-то смысле являющийся одним боевым ребусом, но буду избегать спойлеров.
Как было сказано ранее, у игры отличное техническое исполнение, однако не обошлось и без некоторых общих минусов, являющихся, скорее, издержками субъективности. Например, толкование перков отсутствует вовсе, хотя и подразумевает лишь прибавку к врождённой боевой предрасположенности персонажа. Также ввиду отсутствия представления о реализации местных классов может случиться так, что корневое распределение очков на персонаже лишит его каких либо личных возможностей. Паладин в пример. По мере роста у него открывается два лечащих спэлла: целевой и командный. Очки были раскиданы с расчётом на некий аналог танка и магия ему не поднималась, в следствии чего командное лечение было ему недоступно ввиду перманентного недостатка врождённой маны. На деле это можно пофиксить обмундированием, да и спэлл оказался не так полезен, как целевой вариант, но всё же.
Итого мы имеем пусть и максимально упрощённую версию классического блоббера или партийного данжн краулера, но вполне себе имеющую право на существование. Не стоит ждать от «Героев таверны Обезьяна» какого-нибудь банального [url=https://store.steampowered.com/sub/49358/]Гримрока[/url] или, упаси кто угодно, [url=https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizardry]Wizardry[/url]. Советовать мне её откровенно некому, да и, на мой взгляд, есть варианты лучше. В собственных рамках реализации игра сделана хорошо и вполне может подойти не самому искушённому игроку. Остальным же рекомендую поискать что-то другое, согласно имеющемуся опыту, и заглянуть в Таверну лишь при необходимости расслабиться в привычных декорациях.

Took about 10 hours to complete the game on normal difficulty. It's not horrible and I had fun but I don't recommend it:
- You can't use strategy and run around the enemy. It's just a dumb "stand still and click buttons" so it depends on lucky hits or misses.
- I only reached max lvl minutes before the ending so the ultimate skill you get at max lvl is useful for 1 like fight (one of my characters didn't even get max lvl. they get different exp if though no one died)
- I only saw 2 bows in the whole game and the first one only showed up half way through it so some classes are useless.
- I found out how to dupe items with glitches by accident seconds after starting so it removes from the fun. It's a reported issue that was never fixed.
I could forgive almost all of it, but standing still clicking buttons and depending on luck instead of strategy is the biggest reason for the thumbs down.

Wer ein Spiel auf dem Standard von "Legend of Grimrock" erwartet, wird vermutlich enttäuscht sein. Gerade mal anderthalb Stunden drin und schon ein Drittel aller Achievements? Scheint ein vermutlich kurzes Spiel zu werden.
Eine Sache die mich persönlich stört ist die Mechanik, dass man beim "Fliehen" aus dem Kampf Schaden erleidet. Damit will man wohl das "herumgetänzel" aus Grimrock unterbinden. Sobald man da aber erst einmal hintergeblickt hat, dass es einen kurzen Timeframe gibt in dem man zuschlagen und sich auch ohne Strafe vom Gegner entfernen kann. Und spätestens dann erkannt man schnell, dass die Gegner-KI nicht die Hellste im Leuchter ist. Die Rätsel sind bisher auch eher rudimentär gewesen mit einfachen Schalterrätseln.
Auch wenn "Heroes of the Monkey Tavern" durchaus solide und nicht "schlecht" ist, ist es vom Umfang her, was es zu bieten hat, nicht zu empfehlen. Greift lieber auf die Grimrock-Games zurück, die über der normalen Story hinweg auch noch einen Editor mitliefern und mit einer aktiven Modding/Creator-Community dahinter.

敵を倒すとたまに装備をドロップする
うまくやればポーション類はラスボスまで使わずに進行可能（ラスボスもマナポーション１つしか使わない）
I pretty much own every dungeon crawler ever made. My addiction started with Dungeon Master on my Atari ST. This game is a lot of fun and a pretty much simplified version of Legend of Grimrock. (Basically you can't strafe in combat) I've played around with all the classes they all are fun. The weapons are varied and the monsters look great. If you like dungeon crawlers I think you should give this one a try.

Big problem with the game is a heavy lack of information - took me a while to find out there was a minimap. Still don't know the difference between lower and higher levels spells. Still fun for five-ish hours.

Donc, plutôt réussi pour un jeu dans la même veine que Eye Of The Beholder ou Grimrock pour le plus récent. Il n'est sans doute pas parfait mais il propose une expérience simple et plutôt courte de ce que peut être un pur Dongeon Crawler (personnellement environ 9 heures au niveau le plus difficile). Le gameplay se prend très vite en main et on prend plaisir à explorer et à chercher les passages secrets. Les énigmes ne sont pas trop compliquées (j'ai bien aimé une des derniers niveaux avec les dalles à lances...). Les combats sont en temps réel on aura alors tendance à regarder plus les armes et leurs disponibilités que les animations. Le jeu est plutôt facile donc pour une meilleure approche, si vous êtes habitué au genre, surtout aller directement au niveau le plus difficile!
Il a été développé par une seule personne, vraiment du bon boulot! On a l'impression que c'est une introduction au genre, pas trop de fioritures, juste l'essentiel (et une carte qui se dessine toute seule). N'ayez pas peur, vous devriez pouvoir arriver au boss de fin!
Souvent en promotion, n'hésitez pas à ce moment là.

Very cool throwback to OG dungeon crawlers... not for me type of game play but i can tell this is a labor of love and if you like this type of games its probably pretty awesome... i tried on easy mode and was still to hard i might give it a go again sometime.
Nice little dungeon crawler with good balancing and about 7 hours playtime in normal mode.
I was introduced to the grid based, dungeon crawler rpg in the Grimrock games. I really enjoyed both of them. This is a pared down, much simplified version. Nothing to write home about, but I also enjoyed my time with it.
Keep in mind, there are basically no instructions or tutorial. You have to more-or-less figure everything out yourself, so it's probably not the best place to start if you're looking to explore this type of game for the 1st time.
Didn't like how the combat attacks were animated and how you moved around the dungeon/in combat. Very basic dungeon crawler.
I'm going to cheat and copy this list from the store page:

* 3 difficulty levels
* 2 hours of intense music
* Static real time fights
* 22 different enemies, including 6 bosses
* Full keyboard and gamepad support

* No meaningful story, there's an intro to tell you where you're going and that's it.
* Only 8 floors long. Well built, but not huge and nothing randomized.
* Minimal replay value aside from doing the same set of dungeon floors again with a slightly different selection of classes for the achievements you missed (once you've learned the puzzles and where the secret rooms are it's just repeating it again)
There's just not much to say, it's got enough content to be entertaining for a few hours, but there's no real depth or hooks to bring you back to it after you finish it once or twice.
The puzzles were fun the first time, and it makes for a fun weekend of completing achievements and at this price point that's good enough. Just don't expect more than it can deliver. It's a couple hours of fun, but then it's the same loop over again on replay just with mildly harder enemies if you change difficulty.

"Heroes of the Monkey Tavern" is essentially a ripoff of your grid based first person oblique dungeon crawler CRPG. We all know the type, from Might & Magic through to Eye of the Beholder and the retro-done-right Legend of Grimrock games. So at best, this is a lame ripoff game.
However, the peripheral art aspects of this game make it look a lot more like an asset flip, while perhaps well intentioned, it's clear to me the developer is trying to claim credit for the work of others, and get paid for it. Here's my reasoning... the game features no credits at all. This means either people who worked on the game never got credited for it (this alone is unethical enough), or more likely, the developer used someone else's assets and claimed they are his own work.
I'm drawing my conclusions around the second simply because the cover artwork is absolutely atrocious high school art class dropout stuff, like it looks BAD. Like he scanned in some stuff he scrawled out with a cheap set of pastels. And then, into the game, and WHAM. High quality 3D art assets and textures mapped on a very smooth and functional 3D dungeon engine... combined with really crap level design and storytelling and a very short single player campaign.
So we're expected to believe a single developer (remember, no credits) who can't do art properly has created all this stuff on his own? I call bullcrap. This is an asset flip, the developer has taken a basic dungeon crawler template in Unity, filled it full of other people's assets, did his own lazy level design and plastered some really crap hand drawn crayon art on the front of it, and wants to get paid for it.
While this isn't necessarily against the license for the use of those assets, claiming the work of others as your own is unethical. Dumping asset flips and construction kit template jobs onto Steam is not real game development. The result of such behaviour is never the kind of game I can recommend people pay money for, because it's harmful to real game developers who do the right thing.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
"Heroes of the Monkey Tavern" has the completely unrealistic cash grab price of around $10 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product. You can get Eye of the Beholder games and Legend of Grimrock for less than this, and those are real, sincerely made games, and not asset flips.

Ths game suprised me. The (solo??)dev lives up to their philosophy; all the fun, none of the slog associated with this genre (dungeon crawler rgps).
It is combat focused I'd say though the puzzles are decent they are not the focus.
Would love to see another game from this dev, Must confess, the name put me off a bit figured it was going to be a low effort game with jokes to make up for its shortcomings but in my view the dev really nailed it based on what they said they were aiming for which is rare from what I've seen.
If you like dungeon crawlers and want something lite and fresh give it a go, Minimal story (par for the course), tons of secrets, rewarding progression no fiddling with hunger management (thought I'd miss that mechanic cuz I'm soooo HARDCORE!!! .. but actually didn't) can be pretty challenging on higher difficulty - but most importantly its fun!!!.
As a bonus for me this game has unarmed monks so it can't go too wrong :P
Enjoyable grid RPG. Not being able to move in combat (most of the time) is a little strange though. Not a bad place to begin a live action grid based RPG.

Decent ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles for the price. Good for killing a few hours, especially if you are into old school indie RPGs. Wasn't a big fan of the left and right hand quick slots, having 1-2 things to do every combat little dry combat. Though nothing wrong with simplistic action for a short game.

Good nostalgia in the form of an old-school grid-based dungeon crawl (despite the tags, it is NOT turn-based). It's fairly short (with only 8 floors) and there is little-to-no plot or logical level design beyond "hey, this is a cool prop / mob / wall texture." No hunger mechanic. Plenty of loot for all classes (though more than 2 of one type - heavy, light or mage - will leave you wanting more of one type of gear and carrying around a lot of junk for the others.) A few interesting puzzles, and some tough challenges. On regular difficulty, all the classes feel pretty well balanced and playable in any combination (so long as someone can heal) and the loot comes at appropriate times to keep the challenge going.
Hard mode is definitely for gluttons. Mobs' attacks target the entire party, so be prepared for a LOT of healing on any difficulty, especially when surrounded.
Anytime the price is under $5, I'd recommend this for a single-day's entertainment.
SHORT REVIEW
Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is a very basic and quite short dungeon crawler. If you like classic dungeon crawlers then this game might be worth looking at but if they are not really you're thing then give it a miss.
PLOT: The plot (which is never a strong point of dungeon crawlers) is lame even by the very low standard of dungeon crawlers.
GAMEPLAY: The combat is the area where this game is really poor. There is a “flee” mechanic that damages the whole party if you try to side step or back up reducing combat to nothing more than a toe to toe DPS race.
DIFFICULTY: I played on the “Normal” difficulty setting (out of Easy, Normal & Hard) and found that to be about right. The difficulty is a “one shot” choice made at the very beginning of the game and you can't change it part way through. I did a second run on “Hard” to get the final achievement but found that to be a bit of a slog.
GRAPHICS & SOUND: Good and more than adequate for the game but not exceptional by today's standards.
REPLAY VALUE: Virtually none. Its worth a play through but once you've done it there is nothing further to keep you interested unless you're a completionist and missed an achievement or two.
ISSUES AND BUGS: None. The game works “straight out of the box” with no messing around and appears to be completely bug free.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND TRADING CARDS: Full integration with the Steam platform.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Average to Poor. Its cheap but its also very short. I would put it in the “wait for a discount in a sale” category rather than the “buy it now at full price” category. If you like dungeon crawlers there is also a Grid-based Crawling Bundle on Steam offering an extra saving which is how I came to end up with this.
LONG REVIEW
Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is a very basic dungeon crawler. The game is also short. The 16.6 hours I have logged represents two complete run-throughs of the game at quite a leisurely pace as I played on “Normal” difficulty and then did a second run on “Hard” to get the final achievement but found that to be a bit of a slog.
The combat is really poor. There is a “flee” mechanic that damages the whole party if you try to side step or back up reducing combat to a toe to toe DPS race. (I suppose some people might consider this a bonus if you don't like the “attack and side step” style of play from games like Legend of Grimrock.)
Other than the combat the game is very simple and character progression is fixed. The party also seems to be in a line 4 abreast rather than the usual 2 x 2 arrangement so there is no “front” and “back” row.
There are eight (relatively small) levels each with its own end of level boss and then the final fight with the [spoiler]Dragon[/spoiler]. There are the standard loose bricks and hidden buttons but thankfully the puzzles are quite simple, there are none of the horrible push a whole series of buttons in a timed sequence type encounters and thankfully no pits to fall down.
I come from the school of Dungeon Master on Amiga. That particular game stayed on my shelf for about a year before I could afford the RAM upgrade board for my old A500. I looked at the box almost daily, with it's screenshots from the Atari ST. How dare they not use an Amiga screenshot! lol
The one thing that captivated me about the screenshots was the closed doors. What's behind there? And the items scattered on the dungeon floors. What other treasures could there be in those dungeons? Damn I loved that. And when I finally got to play it it was all that and so much more. Pretty much my favorite Amiga game.
I'm only about 3.5 hours in but there's a lot to like about HotMT. Everything from the dungeon itself to the pissed off residences inside all look very nice. The sounds are pretty good however the music is superb.
Although a few things throw spiders in the leather helmet and get stuck in your hair as you scream for you mama and... (sorry, went too far). There is so much wasted opportunity (laziness?) to create atmosphere with these kinds of games. DM, Grimrock 1 and 2, Eye of the Beholder, and a few others nail this. Here, that magic is just missing something in most places. Hard to pin it down totally.
One thing, there are just too damn many wall shelves. Put some stuff on the floor like those screenshots on the Dungeon Master box! Make the place look lived in. Have blackened spots on the walls where the fireballs hit after you trigger a trap! The trigger buttons for secret areas are either the same old thing or something I don't even know how I triggered it in the first place. Triggers should still operate even if you have used them even if you just hear a sound.
Other things, like that penalty for fleeing. You automatically take a hit even if the thing you are fighting is not facing you. I feel cheated. I got used to it and just don't think about it too much. But I do wish I could turn that off somehow, maybe on a slightly easier difficulty level,
I still have a ways to go on this one to warrant a full on review but I just wanted to put some thoughts down. At this early stage, this is a pretty good game with flaws. There are others that are FAR better than this one and deserve to be played before it.
Crazy boring. Bargain bin Grimrock. Loots were lame. Never even filled all the slots on my toons. Super short. Zero character development. Mage blows. Like where you're better off with out a mage.
Bueno si eres un versado en juegos de mazmorreo este no es tu juego, pero si quieres empezar si que lo es. El juego es muy básico pero no por ello es que sea un juego fácil. Es bastante corto y su historia es un par de párrafos al inicio. No obstante es el primer downgeon crawler que he podido terminar, solo en una ocasión tuve que consultar una guía, los puzzles son simples, pero te obligaran a estar atento. En barata y por lo que pesa en un día te lo puedes terminar, lo recomiendo si quieres iniciar en este mundillo del mazmorreo pero en algo que se pueda terminar sin muchas complicaciones.

HotMT is a decent dungeon crawler. It doesn't live up to Legend of Grimrock or Fall of the Dungeon Guardians and some of the mechanics seem a bit poorly polished, but it was fun to play through with only few moments of frustration. I can recommend it, though a word of advice: Unless you go for the achievement, you may want to skip the highest difficulty setting as the game may become luck-based on it in some sections.

Зато из плюсов вы получаете замечательную атмосферу, прекрасную музыку простенькое хождение по подземельям и разрешение задачек. Маленькая очаровательная игра с потенциалом для перепрохождения.
Nach Lands of Lore usw. gab es eigentlich nur sehr wenig Dungeon Crawler. Um so größer war meine Überraschung als ich dieses Spiel entdeckte.

Es gab Kommentare in denen Leute als Kritik schrieben, dass dieses Spiel einfach gehalten sei. Ist das denn schlimm? Muss man immer Spiele haben wofür man ein Handbuch braucht, um es zu verstehen? Bei Dungeon Master hat mich das "essen müssen" der Figuren immer genervt und ein Platzinventar (unabhängig vom Gewicht) ist ebenfalls positiv.
Das Spiel hält was es verspricht. Gehe durch den Dungeon und treffe ein paar Feinde.

There was nothing that excited me about HotMT. Combat was boring (click on weapon, attack, wait for cool-down to finish, click again). Changing spells mid-combat was awkward. There was no strategy in the fights. Most puzzles were also very straight-forward. Even leveling up was automatic, with no choices to make.
Conclusion: Shallow. 5/10
Baby's first dungeon. Very streamlined, lacks such staple elements like food/water or inventory weight management. There even aren't any pressure plate based puzzles. HP&MP regenerates on its own. And largest distance between level and door in whole game is like 8 tiles.
The only annoyances is the lack of spell buttons disabling when you don't have enough mana, and portrait placement, that prevents you seeing what is on the floor(but outside of very few weapons (on skeleton level), there is nothing on the floor)
To get all achievements in one run you probably want monk, barb(for damage achievement), priest (for mass heal and resurrection) and mage (for freeze spell).
The power hitter is most annoying one - you want to get your barbarian to max level(10, that requires killing like 99+% of all monsters), give him all strength increasing items and 1 or 2 of 4 tomes that you find in dungeon. Having no rogue is bit annoying but you will get a feel where to expect secrets, it is just matter of searching walls for switches/torches.

Completed twice fully unlocking all "Achievements" in about 10hours. Not much content in this game. Hard to recommend. Very simplistic. Plays like a high school I.T project.
Item progression coincides with stronger monsters. Best gear in the game plays like weakest gear against weakest monsters.
If you like clicking weapon cooldowns as they rotate between characters this is the game for you.
If you liked the first Grimrock but you wished it was a bit simpler, HotMT is for you. There's more wandering, less combat, no food or weight management, and some straightforward puzzles and secrets to uncover.
The high point for me was the music - it's really good. Plus it was made by just one guy, so well done to him.
HotMT is good if you just want to kill a few hours making your way through uncomplicated dungeons, it's bad if you're looking for the Next Big Thing in the grid-based dungeon-crawling genre.
I could have finished this in record time, had I not been using it as a time killer while waiting for various actions in another game.
It has a WHOLE 8 levels, this feels like a tester game or something, the narration in the intro within the Tavern seems forced and struggled to complete, the art for the character creation leaves a lot to be desired, as does the game-play.
This is a mild way to waste a couple of hours, just don't throw your cash into it until this goes HEAVILY on sale...like a couple of dollars that you won't miss.
like Dungeon Master ... not bad
There's really not much to say, it's a very basic dungeon crawler. It's a gridder/blobber but with real time combat. There's very little armour, no active skills (except Spells), a basic level up system, basic levels, it's... well it's a barebones crawler through and through. Yet, despite all that, it was fun and it killed some time. I enjoyed it and if you can find it on a deep sale; pick it up for a few hours of mindless dungeon crawling :)

Bon jeu classique de dongeon. Attention à se mettre en clavier QWERTY pour jouer sereinement. Ambiance sympa, enigmes abordables. Combats parfois redoutables (très variable!). Un bon jeu avec une difficulté et une durée très correcte

A me che personalmente amo i dungeon crawler non dispiace, certo sta parecchio distante dai Legend of Grimmrock, però se amate il genere non potrete fare a meno di dargli uno sguardo. Personalmente non ho riscontrato bugs..e grazie agli sviluppatori per la buona traduzione italiana.
To mógłby być przyjemny budżetowy LoG, ale gameplay jest nudny i całkowicie psuje przyjemność z gry. Broni jest mało, zadaje śmieszne obrażenia, jest strasznie wolna i absurdalnie często pudłuje. Wrogowie to cysterny życia, którzy atakują jednocześnie całą naszą grupę(nie ma rzędów w ustawieniu postaci wszyscy są z przodu.) Walka polega na bardzo precyzyjnym poruszaniu się między dwoma polami, atakowaniu przeciwnika i przesuwaniu się na przylegające pole aby nie zostać trafionym ale trzeba to zrobić odpowiednio szybko bo jeśli przeciwnik stoi przed nami i wtedy się od niego odsuniemy to cała drużyna dostaje obrażenia. Można oczywiście stać nieruchomo i brać wszystko na klatę tylko, że na dzień dobry atakują nas węże a nie mamy odtrutki na ich jad, a zaraz za nimi pojawiają się żołnierze z taka ilością życia, że prawie na pewno utracimy jakąś postać.(na poziomie hard)
Для ознакомления с жанром подойдет, иначе проходите мимо. Игра больше похожа на мод к чему то более глобальному. Оставляет много вопросов. Не совсем ясна механика боя. Почему с боссфайты проходят в статике, а с обычнымт мобами можно "вальсирлвать"? Множество пустых комнат и однотипных ловушек так же заставляют задуматься

Un vrai plaisir de (re-)jouer à un jeu d'exploration de donjon en 3D isométrique. Les visuels sont bons, la musique sympathique, les énigmes abordables Le gameplay est réussi et l'on se prend en regretter qu'il n'y ai pas plus de niveaux à explorer et de monstres à combattre. Les combats sont la partie qui pêche un peu avoir peu de stratégique (surtout hack&slash), peu de moyen d'influer sur les combats, qui même s'ils restent accessible nécessite parfois de s'y reprendre à plusieurs fois.

Короткий и сильно упрощённый представитель жанра “обходчик подземелий”. Начну с того, что в игре всего восемь не слишком обширных уровней плюс босс, каких-то интересных секретов или головоломок не предлагается – всё из категории “нажми на едва заметный камень” или “угадай правильную последовательность рычагов”. Ловушки стандартные – шипы из пола, стрелы и огненные шары из стен… даже банального проваливающегося пола не завезли.
Можно собрать свою партию из четырёх героев восьми разных классов, но единовременно каждый из них сможет использовать в бою только две вещи или умения, что находятся в правой и левой руках соответственно. Если вы решите дать магу в руку посох с пассивным бонусом к интеллекту, то у вашего мастера по чарам и таинствам останется ОДИН слот под заклинания! А если вооружите воина мечом и щитом, то использовать навыки он не сможет! При этом герои получают опыт и повышают уровень, но вместо возможности выбрать развитие персонажей нам просто выдают либо бонус к характеристикам, либо определённый навык.
Механика боя весьма странная, она подразумевает неподвижное стояние напротив противника и обмен ударами. Передней или задней линии в отряде нет (если живы бойцы ближнего боя, магам достаётся чуть меньше урона и только), а если вы попытаетесь “танцевать” вокруг врага, то получите серьёзный урон по всей группе за бегство. Добавим сюда тот факт, что в бою не восстанавливается мана, а противники встречаются в основном поодиночке и получим… то, что получим.
К сюжету придираться не стоит, но можно посмеяться над тем как легендарные герои, сидя в невзрачной таверне, сперва пропили все свои деньги, затем оружие с экипировкой, а, учитывая, что качаться они начинают с первого уровня, навыки с заклинаниями они тоже пропили. Попировали, так попировали, что сказать.
Резюме: сложно понять для кого эта игра – новичков жанра оттолкнёт механиками, старожилы лишь пренебрежительно фыркнут.
Es mas casual que la mayoria de estos juegos, con un sistema de combate mas simple y que no te deja moverte libremente cuando peleas (si estas acostumbrado a estos juegos, el combate seguro no te va a gustar), pero tambien significa que es mas facil para los principiantes y la gente como yo (que juego algo 10 horas y despues me voy a otra cosa) lo puede terminar sin problemas. Tambien el manejo de los heroes es mas facil porque desde el principio te das cuenta mas o menos de como se usa cada clase, no tenes que preocuparte por sus posiciones y cuando suben de nivel no tenes que ponerle puntos en los atributos, sino que los ganan automaticamente como en los juegos de rol viejos tipo bardurs gate
Para pasar el tiempo y aprender de estos tipos de juegos esta bueno, Le doy 4 de 7 bananitas dolca.

Отвратительный кравлер. Если вы ищете хороший кравлер, идите и перепройдите гримрок в десятый раз, 4 часа этой игры вам не понравятся.
- Отвратительный левел дизайн. Секреты исключительно в тупиках.
- Отвратительный итем скейлинг.
- Отвратительная система прокачки. Вы просто получаете опыт, а за левел вам просто дают характеристику или пассивку \ активку. Никакого выбора.
- Модели врагов как будто взяты из бесплатного магазина в юнити.
- ИИ тупейший. Вы, конечно, получите дамаг, если "избежите драки", но вы можете стрейфоваться в двух клетках и бить противника пока он идёт на клетку напротив вас. В момент пока он не пришёл можно стрейфануться и не получить дамага.
- Все битвы тупо топорные. Просто закидываешь врага спеллами \ бьёшь рукой. Всё, больше механик здесь нет.
- Все враги ходят по одиночке. В моменты, когда они ходят по двое, вы, о нет, о господи, будете вынуждены выпить зелье маны на хилера.
- Секретки с 4 по 8 уровень хрен разглядишь. Помните те великолепные круглые кнопочки в гримроке? А вот здесь хрен вам - это только лишь выступающий кирпичик. Спасает только редкая надпись о том, что поблизости есть двигаемый объект. В игре есть одно упоминание о том, что вор видит секретки, но перепроходить игру как-то не хочется. В секретках нет ничего стоящего.
- Финальный босс состоит из 30 полигонов, а приближается 30 минут. Зачем - неясно. Механика в нём та же самая - кидать скиллы и бить оружием.
- Можно выбирать персонажей, подсвечивая их, но непонятно зачем это сделано. Это не делает ничего. Видимо, разработчик наметился на что-то великое, а потом забил :)
- Оружие \ заклинания используются только кликом мышкой. Очень удобно, ага.
- У всех четырех персонажей сделан такого размера инвентарь, сколько суммарно шмоток нет в игре. А зачем? Тут же нет веса, и все предметы занимают одну ячейку.
- Я прошёл игру и даже не получил ачивку об убийстве 100 мобов. А всё потому что их в игре - ровно 89 :)
В общем и целом, это неплохая игра на телефон, на один-два присеста на унитазе. Рублей за 25. У меня всё.
