При этом я одновременно и упустил ряд побочных возможностей, и успел забыть, что я вообще тут по сюжету должен делать и зачем. Кажется, игре пошло бы на пользу, если бы она была более сжатой и динамичной, а также если бы она активно помогала игроку перепроходить упущенные дни. Bomber's Notebook из TLoZ: Majora's Mask или система сохранений из Papers Please — вот такого бы сюда.

Lovely all-rounder of an adventure game – a distinct art style that grows on you, interesting characters, intriguing mysteries, and a workable stealth and combat system. It also has meaningful choices, like which secondary class to take!
I appreciate that there are non-combat solutions to many scenarios, especially when you invest in your stealth skill. I don't generally enjoy "time management" in games, but I found that Hero-U gives just enough time each day. Just keep multiple saves, because it's easy to miss things!
It was a pretty good game. Much more to do than the old Quest for Glory games they made back in the day. That said, I wouldn't call it a successor. It just didn't scratch the same itch, I guess. Of course it doesn't have to.
currently on my 2nd play through. Its not Quest for Glory but unique in its own way. Truly enjoy this one.
Essentially, it's a Western RPG Persona. Who wouldn't love that. Sweet and charming, just enough of a throwback to old role-playing games (especially Quest for Glory) without drowning in nostalgia. On my fourth playthrough on two platforms, and I really do hope they make that sequel.

A Kickstarter game that was released about 4.5 years late. Such egregious mismanagement of over $500,000 of backers' money should not be forgotten.

I've never played quest for glory but played the demo and really enjoyed it. Found it fun. So bought this game but then got to experience past the demo and hated how restrictive everything felt. The time limit to do things is so severe I hated it and it ruined my feeling of enjoyment. I felt frustrated and annoyed I could barely do anything. I can't recommend this game so I requested and got a refund. As it's not a game I can happily keep playing. Also it seems like trying the demo got rid of achievements, the section on your profile which would usually list achievements and show what they are are gone and I was not getting any in game that was listed on the store page.
Full disclosure, I am a massive Quest for Glory fan! So it might be fair to say I am a bit bias when writing a review for the unofficial follow up from the series creators. With that said, I can truthfully say that Hero U stands up on it's own merits for any point and click fan.
The sound in the game isn't anything special. There is some nice music here and there, but nothing that really pops out. And the overall art design is fairly basic. I feel as though the 3D modelling from the unity engine, coupled with the hand drawn character panels feels a little amateurish, even for such a small project. That doesn't mean the art design is bad, it's just nothing super special either.
This is the genre that is all about story telling and I must say that the developers have done a great job! It has a very Harry Potter-esk feel to it, set in a school for hero's. The overall writing is very solid, with some decent dialogue with plenty of references to the QFG series thrown in, so much so, that it feels like an unofficial sequel in some ways. All blended together with some point and click puzzling that makes use of a pretty intuitive RPG system. It might not be the deepest game-play in the world, but it does make you feel like a student trying train up for the rouge class.
The point and click genre might be fading away, but at least games like Hero-U play towards nostalgia while trying a little bit to innovate the game play and story telling. Worth a buy if you are a long time fan of the old Sierra classics. However, if it only sparks your interest, maybe wait till it's on sale as the slow nature of the game-play won't be fore everyone.

A little known addition to the quest for glory saga. Personally heard of this while it was on Kickstart & quickly forgot it afterwards. Well, shame on me.
If you have played the old sierra Quest for Glory games, you know what this is about, to those that have not, its an old school style point & click adventure game with RPG elements.
It is made by the original Quest for Glory writers, and it shows, in a good way.
Is this for everyone? Hmm, neutral on that one, but for fans of adventure games, absolutely.

I come to this game as a life long fan of fantasy games. This includes the original Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory games from the 1980s and 1990s. This game is a worthy successor. It provides a alternative, and interesting, take on the genre. A player sincerely gets the opportunity to play a rouge, in a variety of roguish styles, in order to progress in the game. The game is funny, innovative, as well as enjoyable to play. I am saddened that the authors' original plans to make equivalent sequels for warriors and magic users could not come to fruition. I could have paid twice as much and not regretted my purchase.
I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, lore, references to previous quest for glory games, and general play style. The mini-games were fun and I think the game would have benefited from including more of them (darts, pool, etc.) rather than just having them as screenshots/cutscenes.
My main complaint was the gameplay itself which was simultaneously too much and too little. There was lots to interact with in the environment but very little of it was meaningful or useful. IMO, point and click games should be a bit more restrictive in terms of what can be interacted with to drive the player towards what is needed to complete the story. When there are literally dozens of clickable objects (with multiple options on what to do with them) on a single page, anything truly important is drowned out in all of the other noise and it becomes a chore to click through them all and find what is relevant. I get the concept of red herrings and not making the story too linear but come on...
[spoiler] For example, as far as I could tell, just about every lighting device (sconce, torch, candle, etc.) was clickable yet at no point was it ever helpful to click on them. For the first several hours of gameplay I thought there MUST be a secret passageway or something hidden at some point to justify having them all clickable in the game so I continued to check through them individually but nothing ever materialized. [/spoiler]
One other minor issue was the rather bizarre romance options. Several felt forced or unnecessary and a few options that felt like they should have been viable, weren't. Nothing game-breaking but unnecessarily frustrating at times.
Overall, a lot of the game (read: unnecessary clickable objects) could have been cut out without sacrificing anything of note which would have made for a more pleasant overall experience. That being said, the game was still fun and if you've got a nostalgia itch for the quest for glory games this should scratch it.
Worthy successor to the Quest for Glory series.
It's a shame Point and Click RPGs died with QfG because this game proves it they can still be done well and be very entertaining. In terms of story, character interactions, puns and just sheer content this game towers over it's predecessors.
Still, I had couple of gripes. One of them is while Quest for Glory had a lot of replayability due to different solutions to problems depending on class and skill choice, in this game you are rogue and there is not that much you can do about it, you'll be raising pretty much every single stat you have and because of that there is little reason to replay the game, since you most likely gonna end up doing things mostly the same.
Tied to this fact are the puzzles. Like in Quest for Glory puzzle solutions are tied to be being trained in a specific skill rather than monkey wrench logic, but because you are supposed to be trained in every skill the alternative puzzle solutions are rather rare and usually insignificant.
Other minor gripe I had is that the game offers certain task to complete that don't really have any tangible rewards on their own. I get it - it's roleplaying game so often you'll help someone just because you felt like it or because that's a type of character you are playing but from gameplay perspective it just left me scratching my head wondering if I did something wrong or out of order because game didn't react at all to any information I gathered or situation I resolved by doing it.
Still, game is absolutely worth it's asking price, and as a fan of original Quest for Glory series I had a blast playing through it. Hopefully we can expect a sequel or another game of this genre soon.

Hero U is filled with entertaining characters and whimsical humor. It is quite well written. I enjoyed exploring the world a lot. I actually grew to like the daily routine of training skills and progressing the story.
I've been playing this the QFG series since the Heroes Quest days and it's a nice addition. Is it as unique in scale as the original - I would say no. In fact nothing has topped the fourth game but you do finally go back to adventure school. I don't like the music which is too much like a Harry Potter film - nothing can beat Chance Thomas score for QFG 5.
This is probably my all-time favorite adventure game, and I grew up playing through the Quest for Glory and King's Glory series every few years. I love that this game feels like a mix of the Pick Your Own Adventure stories, Harry Potter, and Quest for Glory. I love how many different varieties of stories and side quests there are. I love how many different relationships there are to build or turn into an enemy.
This game is perhaps not the full Quest for Glory experience I love and enjoyed, but it's got all the hallmarks of it. It's pun-tastic, challenging at times, and a lot of cameos of that world I came to love.

Quest for Glory is a very near and dear game to my heart. This plays below the levels of a vnovel, and is more or less a cash grab by washed out devs. Utterly pathetic and disgusting how it was advertised.
Flawed gem that QFG fans should absolutely play. The are absolutely aspects of this game that need to be tightened up and edited and I think the ending is pretty anticlimactic but I still very much enjoyed stepping into another game world created by the Coles. QFG will always be near and dear to me and this is a bit like a love letter to the fans.
True successor to the series. I would love to see a continuation.
i replayed qfg 1-5 just to play this.. absolutely worth it.
Succeeds in being a spiritual successor to Quest for Gory, albeit more RPG based than Point & Click puzzles. You are also limited to being a Thief, but plenty of choices in how you deal with situations. The day/night curfew may be stressful at first, but once you relax and go with the flow it becomes less of an issue.
It gets boring closer to the end, but being a Quest For Glory fan, there's only one question that could be asked: "So you want to be a Hero?"

I think it's my fault for going into this, hoping for a spiritual successor to the wonderful Quest for Glory series, which I absolutely adored, but this game was a huge disappointment for me. It's too restrictive to be fun, and the strict timings you have to adhere to means there's not a lot of freedom to explore and do as you wish.
If you were a fan of the [b]Quest For Glory[/b] (and other point-and-click adventure) games of the 90's, then you'll probably feel right at home with Hero-U.
[h2]The Good[/h2]
This feels like it's made by people who love good stories, and love to immerse others in them. The characters, dialog, locations, atmosphere, and overall storytelling contribute to an engaging experience that pulled me in like a book I didn't want to put down. It doesn't take itself too seriously, weaving heartfelt narrative themes with threads of lighthearted banter, cheesy rhymes conscious of their own cheesiness, and a peppering of dad jokes. I find this nuanced balanced increasingly rare in books, not to mention in games, so I was quite tickled to encounter this gem.
Visually, I appreciated the lo-fi, semi-pixelated look of most of the game, which gave it a retro, nostalgic feel. A lot of care and talent went into the design and artwork, much of which is meticulously hand-drawn. The locations and maps don't have that random, procedurally-generated feel, but seem carefully curated and planned.
The music completes the storytelling. It's never too epic for the encounter or too whimsical for the occasion. I don't know whether the score was written by multiple talents, or a single... either way it's always 'just right'. Dynamic enough to engross, but tasteful so as not to distract.
[h2]The Bad[/h2]
The game lacks some of the polish and production value of the original QFG/Sierra games . I found the hi-res, 3D-modeled player, NPCs, and other random 3D elements to be out of place with the rest of the pixel-rich artwork. The overall visual experience felt a bit disjointed.
In the end, these are minor (and arguably tedious) considerations, but worth noting.

All in all, Hero-U is a fun throwback that I enjoyed playing and would love to see a sequel to.
If you ever played any of the quest for Glory games this is AMESOME! If you haven't then it's still a great game with an excellent sense of humor and enough puzzles that it's worth playing through a few times to get all of the jokes and options uncovered.
Full of soul, character, and SO MANY DAD JOKES! A touching and engaging game that's great for both new players and old fans of the series.
Loved the school/time based system and even grew to love the characters. Got really invested and addicted and ofc it's punny as all hell.
This is the spiritual successor to the old Sierra Heroes Quest/Quest for Glory games. It is all here, with more humor, charm and snark than ever before. There is a heap of in jokes and references that reward folks that have played the previous games.
The first play through was challenging, and I didn't get Rogue of the Year, but my 2nd playthrough I knew what to focus on. I'd invested in the Kickstarter, but hadn't gotten around to it until now. I wish I had so much sooner!
This is the best way for Harry Potter to be made into a game. Replete with choices, well-written characters, funny dialogue, magic and danger, this game is an absolute joy to play.
This game is full of heart, it's obviously a labour of love, and a respectable homage to adventure games of decades past... but it feels not quite fully fleshed out. It drags towards the end (there are long periods where it's unclear what to do next) and is ultimately unsatisfying to complete. Worth playing though, especially if you can tolerate a frankly excessive number of bad puns.
i'm a massive fan of the quest for glory series. however, i speak as someone who was born long after the first few games came out, so i don't have the nostalgia factor that many other fans do. but i've replayed them over and over and over and over and over and-
that said, i was really scared to play hero-u, so much that i held off for about 4 years. and yet when i finally succumbed to my curiosity, i found myself actually enjoying this game!
the biggest difference from the qfg games was that while they featured a nameless hero, hero-u provided you with a character who already had a name and personality made for them. and as the title suggests, you end up attending hero-u to learn the ways of being a rogue.

Hero-U is a charming game with one major flaw, but it still worth playing in my opinion.
Developed by the same people who made the Quest for Glory series, this is a good spiritual successor. I like the game's writing and there are a lot of interesting characters. The setting is fun too. The game has some of that Kickstarter jank, but it doesn't really get in the way of enjoying the game. There is some backer designed content, but thankfully its not intrusive and or terrible like certain other games. The game is clearly designed to be part of a series, but it has a satisfying conclusion and it doesn't feel like you need to buy the sequels to get a complete and satisfying experience.
There is one major issue with the game. I do not like how the game has a time limit. I feel like the game handles time limits very poorly. It barely ever gives any indication when a deadline to finish an event is. It also gives the players hints about how to do something well before they actually can use the hint because its time-locked. This often leads to situations where the player can wonder if they are missing something they need to do or if they just need to wait. Its also hard to tell what stats to focus on. This can lead the player to make a single bad choice, and leave themselves at a significant disadvantage. Magic is worthless, and the player can miss out on learning the two other skills which are actually useful.
Now some people might argue that since the Quest for Glory games had a time limit mechanic, Rogue U should too. I disagree. A game shouldn't keep an unfun and annoying mechanic just because the prior games had it. I also understand that the time limit is there to prevent players from just grinding stats and getting bored, but I believe if someone wants to grind, the game should let them.
Overall, though I enjoyed the game, and I hope this is just the start of a new game franchise.
This is the sequel for the series of Quest for Glory from back in the 1980s-1990. The game is long, interactive and fun. Well worth the money. The combination of RPG on a good story. It does not disappoint.
TL;DR - This game is excellent, and you should buy it.
I have a complicated history with this game.
I'm a huge fan of the old Quest for Glory games, which you might already know if you recognize my avatar. I found an email address for Corey Cole back in 2012 and wrote an email suggesting that they do a Kickstarter campaign for a new QFG type game. I was shocked to actually receive a reply. He told me that they were considering it and planning towards it.
Later that year, the Kickstarter campaign for this game launched, and I chipped in. On the final day of the campaign they were still short of the goal... so I increased the size of my contribution. I personally bumped it over the finish line. I felt like I had done a good thing, and I was excited to eventually get a successor to QFG.
Development dragged on... and on... and the original release date slipped.
...and then they asked for more money, in a 2nd Kickstarter campaign.
...and then I read that the husband & wife team had mortgaged their house to fund the game.
By that point, I felt terrible. I had a lot of guilt around contributing to miring two of my idols in development hell. The thought of them losing their house and having their retirement impacted felt horrible.
Am I overstating my influence and importance in all of these events? Yes, absolutely... but that's how I felt, and I couldn't escape the guilt.
I couldn't bring myself to read the Kickstarter blog updates any more. I never played the early betas that I had access to. When the game finally came out a few years ago, I couldn't bring myself to play it. I worried that it couldn't possibly live up to the hype in my head. Most of all, I wasn't ready to risk the emotional impact if I disliked the game.
A couple of weeks ago I decided that it was time to finally play it.
I feel like an even bigger idiot for putting it off.
This game is *outstanding*. It has everything that I enjoyed in the QFG games. The writing is excellent. The characters lean towards well worn archetypes, but they are relatable and well fleshed out. The plot is interesting, and leaves several threads unresolved for a potential sequel. It's full of cheeky humor. The stats-building component is surprisingly fun and rewarding. I loved the QFG games in spite of their clunky combat, but the combat in this is both fun and rewarding, with dozens of gadgets that can turn the tide of a fight.
And here's the main point, something that RPG fanatics are always clamoring about - YOUR CHOICES MATTER. The way that you handle certain events impacts the plot of the game. Characters can DIE if you do not save them in time. There are multiple ways to solve almost every quest. The other characters in the game will solve some quests if you fail to! It feels like a living, breathing, interactive experience.
I have nothing but praise for this game. I feel like a fool for not pouncing on it the day it was released.

I had so much fun with this spiritual successor to the Quest For Glory series by the original creators. I played through the classic Quest for Glory series on my first real PC as a kid. This new title isn't perfect, but it follows in it's origins as a point-and-click adventure with skills and RPG mechanics. Plus it has some very sweet and sincere romance options for the side characters that are fun to read. Give this adventure game a try, very recommend!
This game is everything but perfect. There are a lot of flaws that jumped in my face:
- the clunky UI, everything is a dialogue.
- puzzle logic that builds up time pressure on you to finish something, even though it is not solvable until the last minute.
- the intro looked like an amateur 3D artist made it in the year 2000, kept me from really trying to play this game for over a year.
- waiting for opponents to move or do something
BUT...
I had a lot of fun with this game:
- the hand-drawn 2D art creates a dense atmosphere
- story and characters kept me invested
- the game-loop and constant character improvements were satisfying
- the feeling and nostalgia of Quest for Glory was very strong
If you liked any of the old games, then this game is a clear recommendation.
If you are new to this game series your mileage may vary.
Hero-U is a unique game, not without flaws, but I think it's altogether positive and worth playing. It's well-made, so whether you'll like it is probably a matter of taste.
This is part Adventure, part RPG, part time-management. The story is basically 100% linear across the 50-day school session. All objectives are optional, but you need to pass a certain bar to get the best ending. You altogether have quite a lot of time to do the time-limited tasks, so even with somewhat inefficient play, if you are making an honest effort, you'll probably be okay. The major quests give you good clues, so there's no "moon logic" here.
There are tons of conversation trees and random objects to play with, filled with mostly-clever and humorous commentary from Shawn (the player character). It's a game just as much about trying every single random thing to see what Shawn will say.
There are a couple of mutually exclusive paths and sidequests that are difficult to find, especially on a first play. So it can be nice to play a second time (or come back and play a third time after a long while).
The worst part of the game is that the skill training is a bit grindy. You can generally only learn 5 points of a skill (out of 100) each game day. And then, once you do learn how to manage your days efficiently, you have way more time than you need and it's a pain to keep clicking Shawn's bed to sleep through the excess one in-game hour at a time. However, there are lots of games that are a bit repetitive in a calm way (Harvest Moon, zero-plot simulator games, etc.), so I'm sure some players see this as a positive.
Second worst thing is that some of the dialogue can be pretty stupid. It's kind of spread throughout in random places, but less than 5% altogether. And then there's pretty much zero point to having any conversation with Sophia the receptionist. All she does is call Shawn a series of stupid and inappropriate pet names from first to last meeting while being generally whiny about nonsense and giving you no helpful information.
Overall I still give a generally positive rating, and better if you can get a 50% off sale.
I love this game.
I enjoyed playing Quest For Glory I and II as a young person, (I stopped playing games for a while and missed the other ones). Rogues are my favorite characters to play when I'm playing any RPG, and I love the sort of character building in Persona 4. I like the university setting, I like the characters and the dad humor, and I like turn based combat over real time combat. I find the gameplay loop to be addictive and I found myself playing for 5 hours yesterday, telling myself that I would stop after "just one more in-game day".
It was very similar to the original QFG games.
I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It brought back wonderful memories of playing the old quest for glory games when they first came out. Definitely recommend the game.
One of the few games I've played through to the end in the last few years. A worthy follow-on to the Quest for Glory series.
I'm giving the game a positive review even though it is highly flawed. I had a lot of fun playing it, and I was able to do most of the different things there are to do, and explored all the areas, both common and hidden. The beginning of the game was great, the middle got boring, and the ending was excellent. I felt very accomplished by being able to defeat bosses and situations by a combination of combat and diplomacy, but I was very disappointed I did not win the game by achieving Rogue of the Year.
The reasons I didn't like it were the constant restrictiveness of the clock. You had to be done exploring for dinnertime and bedtime, and if you weren't you got teleported out of your current place to the dining room or bedroom. I achieved finishing an advanced elective course, but that meant I had to be at the classroom by 3pm every day. Another thing that was very annoying was how things unfolded at certain days.
I ended up not achieving Rogue of the Year because a fellow classmate died, and I couldn't rescue him because he died in the catacombs, which at that point I had not yet unlocked. I played it all the way through, only using a save-game once to back-track, but if you want to do everything and win you'd be hard pressed to do it without a walkthrough. Overall, it was a fun ride.
A fun and funny point & click adventure for those of us that hate button-mashing. Lori Cole has designed a worthy successor to the "Quest for Glory" series--one rife with in-jokes and references to those original games. I wasn't prepared for how elaborate or intricate this game would turn out to be, or just how much control I would have over my character and his evolution. This is the kind of game that cries out for replay just to explore alternate characters, stories and solutions. It's great fun. It's also the first game I've ever played that allowed me, a male character, to fall in love with any other character, including male classmates. I have to say, that made me feel kind of great, and leveled up (so to speak) my passion and engagement in the story. My only question: when do we get the sequel!?

Stopped playing due to boredom.
Very enjoyable throw-back to the original QFG series, and worth buying at full price (don't hold your breath waiting for this title to ever go on sale). My criticisms are as follows: 1) gameplay is linear 2) I felt the pace really slow down toward the end, it got a bit repetitive and tedious, and I ended up taking a few weeks off before coming back and completing the story 3) no short-term replay factor like the original games had. Overall I had a great time with this and am really glad I finally caved and bought it (I'm more of a mobile gamer these days), it's a lot of fun, and made with love.
This game made me a better rogue! I never play as a rogue in RPGs because I'd rather have heavy armor or devastating spells. But thanks to the approachable curriculum of Hero-U, I became a lot more confident in my ability to sneak, trap, throw knives, and redistribute wealth. I was advised early on to avoid conflict if possible instead of rushing in, and I though of that advice many times when I got surrounded and overwhelmed by wimpy little monsters. Fortunately, a friend would always save the day if necessary. I ultimately aced my exams, including the very real multiple-choice questions. Most importantly, I won the heart of a certain pirate...
The developers did an excellent job capturing the feeling of being a student in a magical castle. There are abundant secret passages, ghosts, lost treasures, and social opportunities. At first it may seem difficult, and at no point will the game hold your hand, but if you pay attention to details and explore everything you should be fine. My only complaint is that sometimes there wasn't enough to do; a few more side quests would be appreciated. But the charming characters and environment more than make up for any shortfall.
Very much a spiritual (and literal) successor to the classic Quest for Glory games. It has the same elements of exploration, skill building, and humor, but with more updated graphics and smoother gameplay. It's also packed with easter eggs, so if you loved the Quest for Glory games, you'll love this one too!
I loved Quest for Glory as a kid and I love Hero-U as an adult.
A character and story driven RPG that is well up to todays standards while also maintaining the ‘old school’ adventure game feel. I was immersed by the game and didn’t let go until it ended.
The game adds a lot of lore to the existing Quest for Glory world of Gloriana and sets an ideal stage for many sequels and spin-offs. The creativity of the writers for making up intruiging plot devices is impressive. I really hope Transolar games will get the chance to make more games like this!

I never thought about how well the old QFG formula fits with the school VN elements that this adds, but QFG was always about distributing your time between training, earning, and progressing story, its just a bit more regimented now.

This is a fun point and click game with a good plot, memorable characters and funny writing. It reminds me of the Kings Quest games that helped get me into gaming as a kid.

Now to [i]Hero-U[/i]. This game is great in some ways and really bad in others.
Great are the sense of wonder and adventure, the many tales you can weave yourself into, and the varied places you can discover. In these respects—as in the humor—[i]Hero-U[/i] is a proud heir to [url= https://store.steampowered.com/app/502750/Quest_for_Glory_15/]the Quest for Glory series[/url].
The graphics are good, overall. A lot of places do elicit wonder, as do some of the 2D drawings. Many other 2D drawings, however, are … less inspired. Also, the 2D and 3D renditions of the same characters differ noticeably.
The characters themselves are … OK? Honestly, I don’t know why they didn’t engage me more than they did. They have interesting personalities and backstories, and even their own side quests for some.
The fights are slow and boring. And numerous. You can try to sneak around them (though not if you want to become able to help some of the characters with their side quests), but sneaking is itself very slow. And if you get caught, you have to fight, and if you’ve avoided fighting up to then, you aren’t gonna win.
[i]Hero-U[/i] is very grindy. Sure, there was some grind in Quest for Glory, but here the game is longer and the grind exponentially worse. It sucked out any pleasure I had in playing, after a while.
This game doesn’t even [i]need[/i] the grind. The grind is something other games use to inflate themselves artificially, but [i]Hero-U[/i] would be a long game even without it. So I wish the grind had been reduced somehow. Or replaced by another system altogether, even if that distanced [i]Hero-U[/i] from Quest for Glory.
One aspect of Quest for Glory that [i]Hero-U[/i] didn’t replicate, alas, is the variety of ways to tackle the same situation. In Quest for Glory, many puzzles could be solved differently by the three character classes (four, if you count the Paladin). Not so here, since there’s only one character class: rogue. The magic, as a result, had very limited utility out of combat. No [i]fetch[/i] spell. No [i]open[/i] spell. No [i]levitate[/i] spell. <sob>
Finally, the ending was a letdown. Some of the side quests (notably Katie’s) were a lot more exciting, and had a much more thrilling climaxes, than the main arc did.
Reminds of the Quest for Glory games, with plenty of references and same creators. Gameplay is fun, with options for working through things in different ways. The only real downside is the time issue, which controls the flow of play and make a real huge time commitment to get through the entire game (if you want the best ending) because you constantly have to have good time management and complete everything you want in 50 days (with different days having differing amounts of free time).
Lots of fun nostalgic feelings with this game, it definitely captures the Quest for Glory magic. Thirty years on and I still go back to play these games at least once a year; this game is a great addition to the canon. Thanks to Lori and Corey for all of the fun times, bad puns, and good memories.
This game is fun to play, with an immersive world, great music and exciting non-player characters to interact with. The art is gorgeous, the story and world-building are very interesting. If you're also a fan of the Quest for Glory series, this is a worthy and wonderful successor to that set of games, and so has a lot of nostalgia value. But if you've never played those games, this one stands on its own as something very exciting to play. It may even pique your curiosity to try out those older games! I love this. This is another example of a game that made me wish Steam had a neutral option for rating games. Ultimately though I have to say that this ended up feeling like a chore to finish.

I went into this title strongly biased. Growing up on the QFQ series I was immediately intrigued when I saw that Lori and Cory Cole had started their own studio and developed a new title in the vein of the QFG series.
[h1][b][u]Pros:[/u][/b][/h1]
-Probably the one thing that stuck out the most in this game was the level of object interaction. Nearly everything on the screen is clickable and interactable with I'd say at least 95% having unique interactions, descriptions and writing for each. This is an extremely tedious process and I give made probs for the development team for this work.
-I think the setup for the story and character design are mostly fairly good. I’ll get into why it doesn't really work out in the long run though shortly.
[h1][b][u]Meh...:[/u][/b][/h1]
-Annoying to go back and forth between the character stat screen and equipment selection screen to see what effect each item has on stats.
-Updating equipment doesn't change character style. This is keeping in line with QFG and other RPG type games, but here it sticks out for some reason.
-Main menu style underwhelming.
-Intro video is low resolution, choppy
-No voice work. Again, this can and has worked in many P&C games. In this case I am unsure if it’s really a negative as I think all of the puns would have gotten old quickly. I also think it would have upped the cost of the game substantially due to all the unique interactions and dialogue.
-Music is decent but gets repetitive.
-The overall interface and game design makes me think they might have been attempting to make a title compatible with mobile OS’s. I would almost think this is comparable to one of those cheapo mass produced mobile OS RPG games were it not for the somewhat better story and writing then you’d find in one of those.
[h1][b][u]Cons:[/u][/b][/h1]
-For those looking for a quest for glory reboot, this is not it.
-There are no character classes (closest is you get to choose two of three "Electives").
-You are essentially locked in the school so there is no sense of world exploration like in QFG.
-The RPG elements are underwhelming, and character building takes FOREVER with little pay off.
-Fights are boring and repetitive. Often goes to overhead view which is ugly. Had one or two occasions where there were clipping errors due to view change.
-So much of this game feels tedious. The time mechanic makes it really feel like I’m at a school. Go to class, do one or two stat building activities, go to elective, eat dinner, do an additional thing, repeat. Repeat...REPEAT....ughhh.
-No direct inventory interaction (i.e. dragging objects out of inventory to use on environment/other objects). In some P&C’s this can work but, in this case, it really just adds to the lack of immersion and overall sense of tedium. You can literally do all your interactions by pressing the 1-5 keys on your keyboard.
-Ughhhhhh....here’s a good one: The triggering for being able to proceed with certain events and actions is a pain. The game will hint that you need to perform a certain action (like finding a hidden door). You quickly find where the door most likely is, but you can't choose to open it UNTIL a specific day. This makes you waste time on things trying to do things you can't actually do yet.
-The poobah card game is dumb. I had to continually reference a reddit post about how to play. It takes too long, and you can't set your own bet amount. Also, the availability of the game starts early on, but I didn't have enough money to play until many game days later.
-The dating mechanic is, again, tedious and feels like something that might have been an interesting idea but just didn’t pan out here.
-EXTREMELY UNDERWHELMING ENDING.
[h1][b][u]Final Thoughts:[/u][/b][/h1]
I really hate to say this, but I was glad when I was finally done with this game. The ending would have actually made me upset if I wasn't so relieved it was finally over. Halfway through I had already invested 10+ hours of time and I wanted to see it through so I could write a comprehensive review. It appears Transolar Games is doubling down on this world they've built here; I see they already have a similar game styled more towards a younger crowd in the same game world and there are many references to a future sequel(s). I do not believe I will be checking any of those out. Still, the Cole's are legendary P&C designers, so I am really hoping that they shift to a more faithful QFG style adaptation in the future and wish them the best of luck.
I did not pay full price for this game and could not possibly recommend anyone else to do the same.

A really fun and enjoyable game, the setting, interaction and characters really give me a nostalgic feeling and I've enjoyed it enormously.

Hero U is a lovingly crafted and respectful successor to the old Sierra 'Quest for Glory' games. This will make it nostalgia fuel for some, but leave some of the references 'over the heads' of non QFG fans.
If you have never played a QFG game, this is a cute title about going to a school for heroes, where you grind up your stats in a day-to-day time management game. Your days are spent going to class, training skills, and making friends/enemies.
The game contains combat, equipment, magic/alchemical items, and differing dungeons with some different enemies to explore.
You read stories, ask questions and take tests while trying to avoid getting demerits and being kicked out of school.
The good;
-For QFG fans, this is a game set in that world, with lots of respectfully made references back to those great games of old.
-The story and character are interesting and diverse. I wish there was greater emphasis placed on the different characters, their individual goals, and generally more/deeper interactions with them.
-The various events that pop up throughout the games 50 odd days, add interesting problems, unique situations, and enjoyable obstacles for the player to overcome.
-The unique events that come up throughout the story are a fun diversion with puzzles and interesting content. I wish there were more of these.
The Bad;
-Most of the content is fairly shallow;
Problem -> solution -> resolution, without much impact beyond a few comments, this describes most of the game. Outside of one or two points that I won't spoil, your decisions don't have much meaningful impact. While exploration is fun, I had quickly managed to fully explore the new areas as they unlocked. Most of which had little impact once their event was over.
-The grind gets very repetitive very quickly;
I found myself getting bored with the same 'grind stat until dinner', while this is broken a little by the unique events, there are not nearly enough of them to completely mask the wash, rinse, repeat. Simply put, the cycle of ‘go-to A get apple’ ‘go to B give apple’ ‘get “X liked that” ‘…. Gets boring by the third time I did it, let alone the thirtyish…
-The constant need to revisit locations and make sure you don't miss anything is just a disappointing and aggravating time sink;
Many of the game's intrigues and secondary plot points, don't come up unless you visit certain areas on certain days (sometimes at specific times). As there is no real indicator of this, I found myself constantly treading over the same ground, day after day, to make sure that I found all the possible events. For example, there is a character that appears in a specific room, but not every night. Learning their story requires you to enter that room on several of these nights. As I did not know which nights this character was present, I ended up repeatedly visiting this room every night (usually by saving first, sneaking there, and loading my saved game if they were not present).
- The lack of a real ending just bugged me;
After forcing myself to grind through the last several days (there was some good story content mixed in which helped me here). I finally got to the last class. The ultimate combination of my 40+ hours of exploration, grinding, sleuthing, helping, and discovery. The final reward, a group photo and a bump to the title screen. To be clear, the journey was fairly fun (if grandly), but the complete lack of anything resembling an epilogue was just a disappointing cherry on an ‘ok’ second half of the game.
Conclusion;
As a fan of the QFG games AND a fan of point and click games AND as someone who enjoys the Coles (Writers) storytelling style AND given that I paid $15 for the game…. With all this, it was worth it for me.
However, I highly doubt that I am in the majority. Fans of QFG will find a flawed game that provides enough enjoyment to make it work playing. Non-fans will likely enjoy the first several ‘in-game days’ before realizing that, outside of some scripted events, that’s as good as it gets.
Hero U is a mix between an annoying game of repetition and poor design, combined with a fantastic revisit to one of my favorite gaming worlds. The result is a game that I both enjoyed (at times, when something new game up) and truly felt wasted my time at others (grind stat, grind rep, grind money, revisit a location, run the hallways, check for something new).
I have read that this is supposed to be the first in a new trilogy by the developers. On the one hand, I hope that this is true, as I would like to revisit this world. On the other hand, many of the elements that I loved about the QFG games, such as exploring new places and meeting new peoples, these elements are extremely limited in this game. You meet a half dozen classmates, and about the same number of teachers, and you are confined to the school the whole game….
QFG had me defeating brigands, making camps in the Savanna, sleeping under the protection of magical trees and saving cities from djinn, and defeating dark gods... Hero U…rat’s in the basement (there is more later)… it is just limited.. in almost every metric by comparison, both in scope and depth.
Will I play the sequel? Probably, I just hope that they don’t stick with the Hero U ‘stuck at school’ day-to-day grind motif.
Non è un Quest for Glory, e forse non sarebbe stato nemmeno giusto provare a farne un altro. Come seguito spirituale, tuttavia, credo non possa mancare nella bacheca di chi ha amato i cinque adventure games che lo hanno preceduto. Inaspettata specialmente la profondità del battle system, che supera di gran lunga quello dei QFG. La storia, pur semplice, è raccontata bene, spinge ad andare avanti e a scoprirne i segreti cliccando ovunque, anche se effettivamente i primissimi giorni potrebbero sembrare un po' monotoni. Forse è troppo facile costruire un personaggio "perfetto", capace di fare tutto, a mio parere sarebbe stato più giusto rendere le scelte più "punitive" e orientanti verso un finale o un altro (ma d'altronde sarebbe stato anche parecchio più frustrante). Naturalmente è molto piacevole scoprire gli accenni e i riferimenti ai Quest for Glory, ma il gioco è godibilissimo anche senza averli mai giocati, a patto che vi piacciano gli ibridi tra GDR e adventure game... e lo humor inglese!

This a true gem of great value in that it is the real spiritual follow up to the quest for glory series by Sierra.. If anything this game proves that the spirit of this series lives on. And not just in a way that diminishes the original experience if you are interested most in being a rogue in the original 5 games. I honestly recommend this to all who would otherwise the genre of the adventure/rpg even though would call it quaint. Even if that is the case in the form of the graphics oozing the atmosphere of the original games, this is not a bad deal as you honestly feel more connection to those game than if the approach was taken of doing graphics that indeed are decent and high definition, but miss out on the nature of the excellence which is these 6 games.

+ The characters are very likable. They remind me of The Name of the Wind a lot but I’m a fan of the book series so that’s a plus.

The game provides a worthy challenge and I had even more fun re-playing it to see what I missed! I personally enjoyed the old references to Quest for Glory, which was why I got the game in the first place! I hope Hero U continues with new characters and tasks and it continues to refer to QFC here and there since it was one of my favorite games as a kid!
If you liked the original Quest for Glory and love the puzzles and mysteries associated it, then this game is for you! A great sequel to the original. Very intriguing story line and challenging puzzles.

This game is super fun. It has an old school style but a modern interface and it is fun. Lots of cool characters, funny dialogue, and it is long and engaging. If you liked Lori and Corey are awesome.
For me this game was a no. It simply didnt allow me, as the player, to figure things out on my own at my own pace. Many of the quests are time locked, in that even though they are given to you, you are not actually allowed to "solve" them until a specific, unannounced time in the future when some pre programmed script kicks in giving you all the tools and information you couldnt have found no matter how much time you wasted looking for it previous to that.
In short you have to play the game all the way through, and suffer endless lost hours doing pointless things, because you dont realise their pointless, and well that just left me feeling upset.
YMMV as they say and this game certainly has its following, so feel free to make up your own mind.
I just completed this game for my new YouTube gaming channel. I started with Quest for Glory 1 to 5 and went all the way through to Hero-U. Will be 42 episodes on my channel (FlightlessBird) when I'm done uploading and I spent hours in this game. Overall, I give this game a HUGE TWO THUMBS UP! If you are a fan of the original Quest for Glory games, this one is true to its form. The original creators, the Coles, did a magnificent job with this game. If you want more QfG in your life, you owe it to yourself to get this game. It has the heart of the originals, from choices to puns everywhere. It never takes itself too seriously, but there are moments of true suspense and drama!
Is it perfect? No. There are a few events that seem off. For example, if you do badly on the midterm (like I did), you can't go back to your elective class but the teacher still tells you to be at class by 3 if you wish to go. Sometimes, like in the original Quest for Glory, you can complete objectives out of order. For example, giving Katie her map after completing the Sea Caves with her. Yet, are these huge negatives to the game? The answer is no.
In fact, because we couldn't do more magic, it freed me up to do more thieving skills. Which, I think, is the biggest plus to the game! There are so many ways to play this game! You can play through without fighting any fights! OR, you can play through attacking everything! The combat is super fun as well. It starts out slow, but once you get traps and learn how to effectively fight AS A THIEF (running in and saying Hulk Smash will leave you in the hospital for sure!), it's a lot of fun.
The game is about twice as long as Quest for Glory 5. And if you are to play through to see everything, you can probably double that time. I really want to see more from the Coles and Transolar. I hear they have a new game called Summer Daze coming out, which I will definitely be playing and posting on my channel. I just hope they don't forget about Wizard's Way, the sequel to Rogue to Redemption. My favorite class has always been a wizard, and I so badly want to play as a full-fledged Wizard in this world. Even with the Harry Potter game coming out, there's always room for more Magic in a School full of heroes!
I want to close this recommendation by just saying THANK YOU to the Coles and their team at Transolar. I was a huge fan of the original Quest for Glory games growing up, but for some reason never played Dragon Fire until I made this channel. Then I played Hero-U and realized how much I love you all so much. You were a huge, integral part to my growing up loving the world of fantasy as a kid and you still fill me with wonder today as an adult. Please, don't stop. I love you guys.
This is a decent game, although it's not quite what I expected. I had been expecting more puzzle and adventure game elements, but this game is definitely more of an RPG. You play as a young wannabe thief, Shawn. Shawn is caught during his very first break-in attempt and is enrolled by a mysterious benefactor to study as a Rogue at hero school. Rogues consider themselves to be far superior to thieves; rogues are charming and honorable and brave, and thieves are selfish cutthroats.
The game unfolds over 50 days. You are on a strict clock, but the clock is more turn-based than real-time. If you stand still and take no actions, time will not pass. Time only passes when you walk or interact with any object or person. Most days unfold using the exact same schedule. You have to be in class until 2, there is an elective at 3 that the game strongly suggests you take, you have to show up at the dining hall between 5 and 6 PM, curfew is at 10, and bedtime is around midnight. If you go to bed after midnight, you will suffer (minor) penalties on the following day. The game definitely railroads you onto this schedule, so if you try to pump iron in the gym instead of going to dinner, the game will warp you to the dining hall, and if you try to read a book in the library too close to curfew, Shawn will refuse to do it.
Time comes at a premium in Hero-U, so a lot of the game is figuring out how to cram in enough activities to raise your stats. You will spend most of your days following the same basic routine: Class, gym, elective, dinner, rec room, sneaking about a bit, bed, repeat. It is very fun to see the stats increase at first, but by the end of the game I had most things maxed out and I did not notice very much difference in the gameplay.
There is also a social aspect in the game. Shawn can chat with and make friends with a number of teachers and staff, his roommate, and his classmates. The characters are all a bit flat, and friendships don't have too much of a gameplay benefit, but nonetheless I found this aspect of the game to be welcome. There's even a bit of a romance aspect tacked on with both men and women to flirt with, which is quite minimal but also a nice touch.
Most of the aspects of Hero-U could be best described as "adequate, if not stellar". The combat works and gets the job done. The abundance of time-gated content is a bit frustrating, but understandable. The character progression, world-building, and overall story is decent.
There is one place where Hero-U really shines, though, and that is the attention to detail with with the environment and the general writing with the flavor text. Every picture, every suit of armor, every random pot and bush and tree has multiple interaction options. These serve zero gameplay purpose, but the writing that went into these things is enjoyable and warm and funny. There's a staggering amount of well-written flavor text hidden away in this game which has no function other than to reward exploration. These delightful puns and other tidbits are funny, cheerful, and somehow nostalgic.
There's a lot here to make me optimistic about Summer Daze, and I will be picking it up as soon as it is available.
The game is retro. Don't go in for it if you're not looking for something that smacks of the late ninties. But if you like the look of the posted preview, and like puzzles and secrets tossed in with your RPG, Hero-U doesn't disappoint. Charming from start to finish. I'd love to see the other hero paths!
In Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption you play as a young thief named Shawn O'Conner. After a burglary goes awry, you are presented with an offer you cannot refuse: a place at Hero University, where you will learn the skills and discipline you need to become a good rogue (in every sense of the word "good").
Attendance at daily lectures on the ways of the rogue is compulsory, but whether you choose to spend the rest of your time hanging out with your classmates, kissing up to the faculty and staff, working out in the gym, studying in the library, or just playing games in the rec room, there is plenty to do and little time each day to do it at Hero-U.
The school grounds themselves also hold secrets for the aspiring hero to uncover, and the ways of the rogue will help you uncover them if you so choose. The old wine cellar in the lower levels of the castle is easy enough to find, but to explore the place, one must either fight or sneak past the giant rodent-like creatures and cockroach-mantis hybrids that now infest it.
Each in-game day gives you dozens of ways to spend each in-game hour, and only about eight hours to spend, giving it a fair amount of replayability. Adding to this replayability are the various ways that you can roleplay Shawn: nearly every social interaction allows him to be charming (affected by his Charm skill), clever (Smarts), or sarcastic (Moxie).
Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is a very enjoyable game, and I look forward to more Hero-U games for the Wizard, the Warrior, and the Paladin in the future.
