One of the first games Ive ever fallen in love with, I played it years ago on an older account didn't realize how deep the story got for the final true ending. I even took a trip to japan and took a train the Bird cafe. I hope you see this review and spend some hours laughing and crying while playing this game. For the pigeon by the pigeon.

Hatoful Boyfriend is the kind of game you launch as a joke and then suddenly you’re three hours in, emotionally confused and wondering why a pigeon dating sim delivers plot twists than half the AAA releases this year. The writing bounces between absurd comedy and emotional gut punches and somehow the mix just works. Some routes land harder than others and a couple of the birds definitely radiate first‑date‑and‑ghosting energy, but the overall charm carries the whole experience. If you’re ready to embrace the chaos and let a visual novel roast you for being human, it’s a surprisingly fun ride. Not life changing, but absolutely in the category of games you finish and then sit there thinking I can’t believe I actually enjoyed that.

Genuinely such an unexpected gem. I bought this originally because I thought "haha, funny dating sim about birds, i love birds!" but was definitely not expecting the amount of story and depth put into this world. I know it's really stupid and cringe to get emotional over a bird game, but Hatoful actually kinda helped me through a really tough friendship breakup by getting me so invested in these characters and their stories that they were what I'd be thinking about instead of my current events. Truly such a precious game, even if it is silly and stupid in concept. Also I like Shuu Iwamine. Thank you Hatoful Boyfriend! <3

Hatoful Boyfriend is the gaming community's best kept secret. I have had this game wishlisted for years, until my boyfriend gifted it to me recently. I streamed it for him and we did not expect the ride we would go on with this.

When I think of human creativity and ingenuity, I think of Hatoful Boyfriend. It has so many endings and branching paths, that it makes even Life is Strange blush. I fell in love with all the characters (except Shuu this nasty bi*** a** mf). Sakuya was my favorite bird, but my boyfriend's is Yuuya. The dating sim element of this game is fun, but literally everything else you get once you go down a certain path is the true culmination of this game. Literally, every character will make you fall in love with them (except Shuu).

The beautiful narrative threads spun by this game have completely enveloped me, and I will carry this experience with me always. You can tell the devs were not winging it, they knew exactly the story they wanted to tell. I am not even being ironic or something, this game is honestly that good. 10/10.

Update: I broke up with my boyfriend because he is not Sakuya.

I don't review games I love enough, oh my god. Hatoful Boyfriend is an experience, and a damn good one. You go into it thinking "silly bird dating sim?" and you're thrown for 5 thousand different loops. There is a lot more going on here, and a LOT more to uncover than you'd ever expect - especially if you keep playing. Routes for characters you'd never consider to have routes, then a secret ending if you complete every route, then even more story and characters in the 2nd game?! Truly, an experience. 10/10 , amazing.

It took me over a decade to finally buy and play this game, and I can honestly say that going in entirely blind was the best choice. I decided to play it initially because of my love for birds, especially pigeons.

I was expecting something silly and cute ... boy was I wrong about that.

It seems silly on the surface, but depending on the route you pick, you're setting yourself up for a world of heartache. As I'm writing this review, I've just spent the last several hours obtaining the last 2 achievements. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, I was thrown for a loop.

Going through the game and getting every ending in its entirety, I grew attached to each of the characters. So learning about all of the birds in such depth, and coming to that final ending ... that was a punch to the gut. I loved this game dearly. It's not the longest game I've ever played, but I certainly won't ever forget it.

I have been obsessed with this game since I was around... thirteen? I don't remember. But Hatoful Boyfriend is one of the most important games I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing and playing. If not for it, I would not have become the storyteller I am today. It is majorly inspirational. Hatoful is funny, it is depressing, it is beautiful, it is ugly. The most important theme of the game is love in all forms. Love that saves or corrupts or is just there. You will find a way to be moved by it. I assure you.

Alors [b]oui[/b], c'est rigolo à jouer, [b]mais[/b] ça reste basique. Et la traduction française n'est pas géniale (la protagoniste, supposée vouvoyer son professeur, le tutoie sans prévenir au beau milieu de leur conversation !).

Néanmoins, j'ai bien apprécié le scénario alternatif (je ne divulguerai pas la méthode de déblocage).

Bref, ce n'était pas déplaisant mais ce n'était pas aussi [i]top tier[/i] que Katawa Shoujo.

我去，真的牛逼，本来以为是野人女主和一群鸽子谈恋爱的无厘头喜剧，但这只是背景板，打完攻略鸽子部分后的BBL线才是真正的剧情，反转够大，直呼“还有高手”
鸽子们的人形立绘还都挺好看的，虽然只在刚出场的时候出现，后面再也没了。看惯了之后觉得鸽子立绘倒也没那么抽象。
因为这游戏很老了，所以ui系统那些都挺简陋的，但影响也不是很大。
BGM有几首也挺好听的。
游戏本身只有英语和日语，但是有汉化组做了汉化补丁。里面还附带了攻略、系列游戏list、世界观年表之类的，B站搜鸽子汉化组就能找到。
反正玩了绝对不亏

C'est ultra absurde mais c'est surtout Vraiment Très Bien ?! J'ai été surpris à quel point le jeu est court, tant l'histoire tient vachement la route.
La dernière route est sans contester la meilleure du jeu mais les mini-routes requises avant celle-là ne sont quand même pas à jeter !
Côté technique, la trad FR est quali, même si c'est un peu dommage que les images de l'archive n'aient pas été traduites. Le jeu est aussi un peu vieux, donc un peu lent, impossibilité de sauvegarder sur un choix (même si un jingle retentit juste avant qu'un choix apparaisse), le jeu ne reconnait pas quand du texte a déjà été lu et peut skip tout si le bouton pour skip est enclenché, etc. ça reste pas trop dérangeant non plus.
Bref, c'est un bon jeu doujin, et une bonne parodie du genre, peut-être toujours la meilleure à ce jour...? Le fait que le jeu fonctionne à la fois en tant que telle et vire aussi dans un bail plus sombre pour la dernière route (sans même causer un "genre whiplash" ultra edgy!) est très inspirant. Un banger en somme.

i knew this game had a deeper layer to it, but i decided to 100% it in a single sitting anyways. ended up staying up until nearly 5 in the morning and was so beyond distraught by the end that i cant help but be completely obsessed with the game now. it almost made me impulse purchase the sequel game on the spot just to know more about this world and its characters

this game is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys visual novels and is willing to give this a shot. it can be a tad repetitive at the start, but i promise it is so so so worth it in the end. no wonder this game is such a cult classic lol

But when you actually go and play this game, you'll realise that it is just much more than it being silly and funny because of the pigeons, there is a [b]further in-depth[/b] of the story and you realise that by spending time with a pigeon throughout your gameplay, if you chose to spend the time with [i]him,[/i] throughout your entire story, of course you can replay over and over to get different endings with each pigeon.

The narrative is actually really enjoyable and a breeze to read through, and you're interacting in majority of the dialogues where you can choose what to say/do. It takes about an hour just to do one pigeon's storyline, which you can of course speed up the texts if you're replaying, because it's mostly the same dialogue until you choose certain points, where you're doing Maths, Gym or Music Class, and hanging out with a certain pigeon. As well to note, majority of the storylines do require you to do a lot of the same subject to get your destined pigeon lover. But the BBL epilogue takes about 4hrs over all, but can be shortened down to roughly 20-30 mins if speeding through the dialogue. But it is worth going through the entirety of the storyline, because it takes up a much darker route as opposed to the main story. :)

If I were to say my favourite? It has to be [b][i]Sakuya Le Bel Shirogane[/i][/b] because of his storyline and realising what kind of pigeon he was, and the way he grew up, his ending made me sad a bit. Same with Ryouta's and Nageki's. I recommend doing the BBL storyline [i]after[/i] getting everyone's endings, because you get the [i]truer[/i] ending, some of them have two different endings (true and normal), so best figure out which one's which!

[code]I genuinely enjoyed this game a lot, and I'm going to get the second game some point, so all in all, this is your money's worth and get on with this game! Because it is not what you think at first impression![/code]

After courting all the birds, I went to fulfill my promise and [spoiler]ended up being killed, dismembered, and having all my body parts put into boxes just for my childhood friend to find my head and go out to solve the mystery of my murder, just for him to find out that he's actually a bio weapon made to kill off the rest of the human race and that he was the one who killed us.[/spoiler] 10/10 would recommend everyone to play this game

I cannot stress enough how much I love this game. The writing is incredible. My most sincere wish is that people actually fully played this game through rather than only viewing is as "silly game where you date some pigeons".

This game is a major influence on my tastes and in my personal writing, every interaction goes deeper than you expect and each route is interwoven in a manner that you would not expect. It is nuanced and deeply compelling in a way that its premise would not have you believe. Please 100% this game, it's incredible and I do not think it gets the credit it deserves.

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2023 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

잘 만들어진 쿠소겜은 정말 매력적이다....정말 모순적인 평가라고 생각할 수 있지만요
대놓고 이상한데 그런 b도 아닉 c급정도 되는 이상한 드립에 서사가 있고 감동이 있다. 이상한데 엉성하지 않다. 잘 설계된 쿠소함은 플레이어로 하여금 이 말도 안되는 세계관에 동화되어 게임 뒷부분에 눈물을 흘릴 수 있게 한다. 비슷한 류의 "이,이거랑 연애를?" 을 여럿 해보았지만 명작을 따라잡지 못하고 그저 쿠소함에만 집중하다보니 짜증날 정도로 성의없고 만듦새가 떨어지는 모습에 실망했음........
비둘기를 빼고 보더라도 훌륭한 비주얼노벨, 미연시지만...아니, 비둘기를 빼는건 상상할 수 없다. 그들이 조류이기에 이 게임이 더 완벽한거다. DLC까지 다 하고 한동안 길거리의 비둘기를 보면 료우타 생각에 눈물이 났어........ 내 소중한 남조친....

처음부터 갓겜이라고 생각했어요...! 귀여운 둘기가 나오는데 어떻게 망겜 ㅋㅋ
근데 진짜 객관적으로 명작임 캐릭터 각각 엔딩도 너무너무 좋은데 꼭 진엔딩을 봐야함
캐릭터부터 브금, 스토리, 엔딩까지 거를 타선이 없음 인생게임입니다
단점: 캐릭터 엔딩 다 보고나면 비둘기가 남자로 보임

Doch wer sich von dieser skurrilen Prämisse nicht abschrecken lässt, wird mit einem der überraschendsten und tiefgründigsten Erlebnisse im Genre der Dating-Simulationen belohnt.
Die Faszination des Absurden:
Der anfängliche Humor ist die große Stärke des Spiels. Die Tauben-Charaktere sind fotorealistische Stockfotos, was in starkem Kontrast zu den typischen, detaillierten Anime-Charakteren steht und für unzählige Lacher sorgt. Die Dialoge sind gespickt mit albernen Wortspielen und Anspielungen auf das Otome-Genre, was das Spiel zu einer herrlichen Satire macht. Man beginnt es für den Witz und die Leichtigkeit zu spielen.
Herz und Tiefgang unter den Federn:

Dieser Handlungsstrang dreht das gesamte Spiel auf den Kopf und verwandelt die harmlose Dating-Sim in eine fesselnde, dunkle und unerwartet ernsthafte Science-Fiction-Thriller-Geschichte. 目前全成就，直说的话，不算神作，包括真相线。不推荐的原因首先是被真相线里堪称横冲直撞的人物冲突解决而感到不满，里面所有的设定都不能细想，所有的爱恨也不能细想；其次是文本量包括乙女线下来5h以内就能看完，我甚至是有段时间不想打了，在开始界面挂机了一小时，感觉不值36块钱。
最遗憾的是鸟的立绘太糊了，同时鸟与鸟之间的清晰度亦有差距。我是来看鸟的，怎么能不整高清小鸟给我看呢？？但凡是高清小鸟我都溺爱了……啊，但是还得再说一句，太可爱了吕宋鸡鸠，太可爱了，这么低的清晰度也如此可爱。

I never thought I would get so invested in a story about birds but...here we are. This is one of those classic games that is a must-play for anyone who enjoys visual novels/dating sims with a silly (and serious!) twist. The dialogue is extremely witty, and for once, I don't actually hate the MC I play as (if anything, she's my favorite character!). If the fact that you only see bird pngs as sprites turns you away from playing, trust me- you eventually don't even notice and get too into the story to care. I started playing thinking I'd be in for an unserious story, but came out with an actually interesting and thoughtful plot line in the end.

If, for some reason, this title has escaped your library, I definitely suggest adding it...everybirdie should give it a try!

Bien, no soy buena con los datting sims, principalmente porque no sé ni ligar en persona, menos voy a saber ligar con palomas, sin embargo, el concepto me gusta mucho y mi favorito es Yuuya ♥ es entretenido y divertido, pero si no te gustan las novelas visuales, puede que no te atrape (ya sabemos que la mecánica de juego de este tipo de juego es practicamente el mismo que el de un powerpoint)
Lo recomiendo muchito, todos los personajes entrañables y le tengo especial cariño por ser de los primeros juegos que jugué en steam

一款披着乙游皮的歌颂亲情与友情的悬疑作品。不如说一周目的乙女线只是大致了解角色人设的表象，而通向真结局的里线才是这个游戏真正想表达的东西，小鸟们的过去与如今的羁绊交织在一起，本来是冲着观鸟去的结果被优秀的感情描写和对角色关系的把握给震撼到，虽然说涉及乙游诈骗了但是真的挺不错的，就是小鸟们要是会叫就更好了

Never in my life did I think a game about dating birds could get me so attached to the main character, and then subsequently cause me to get emotional and even cry in the final route/ending of the game.

Do not be fooled by its cover. This game's overarching story and the way everything comes together in that final story makes all the absurdity and tedium of the rest of the game worth it. Absolutely one of the best visual novels I have ever played, and the twists and emotional rollercoaster that is that final ending will leave you wanting more. Please give the game a try if you haven't, or at least watch a playthrough.

The original pigeon dating sim. Classic VN before all those other comedic ones showed up on the scene. I played the original in a tiny little 640x480 window with an English translation patch, and this version does a great job of keeping all of the charm.
