With how ubiquitous the Match-3 genre is these days, it's kind of hard to remember a time before Puzzle Quest. Casual games like Bejeweled and Zuma were able to capture a major underserved audience and there had been previous attempts to add story lines to arcade puzzlers with varying success. Puzzle Quest kinda blew the doors off of the whole thing though. I don't think anyone expected it to be even 10 percent as successful as it ended up being but something about the familiar Bejeweled gameplay with a more complicated layer on top made everyone go gaga for it. It probably didn't hurt that the Nintendo DS, the first system Puzzle Quest released on, was also a massive, [i]massive[/i] success and had a hugely varied demographic install base. Puzzle Quest overlapped so many of those demographics and its mix of story, RPG mechanics, and puzzle tile matching has continued to be influential since. From the whole "No, no, I swear, I'm just playing it for the articles!" deal of Hunie Pop or the Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion series from last year, they all owes it to Puzzle Quest.

As with anything that has that kind of breakthrough success, copycats immediately sprang up. Just like the the last few years with the endless Vampire Survivor clones coalescing into a new genre, everyone was trying to get a bite of the Puzzle Quest pie. Notable publishers even. Konami had their Puzzle Chronicles game, for example. Then there's [b]Gyromancer.[/b] Somehow, Square Enix teamed up with Pop Cap Games to release [b]Gyromancer[/b] and it's kind of a weird one. It almost seems like the two companies working together started as a joke like the old Archie Meets The Punisher comic book crossover. However, just like that crossover, this game mostly works pretty well. Pop Cap was firing on all cylinders in this era, before EA bought them and everything just... disappeared, so the foundation for [b]Gyromancer[/b] is going to be solid. Essentially, it's their earlier game Bejeweled Twist slapped into a faux medieval RPG coat of paint. You've got the traditional looking Bejeweled board but instead of just swapping two tiles, you rotate a 2x2 square clockwise. A minor difference but it changes how you approach the board greatly.

On these boards, you are competing against an opponent but unlike Puzzle Quest, your opponent isn't twisting the pieces against you. Instead, both the player have meters that rise after each twist the player makes. These meters represent an action that will change a tile on the board to an action piece. If the player has one of these pieces in a match, then it'll set off an action, such as exploding which will remove surrounding tiles, removing all tiles of a certain color, and so forth. This will also send damage to your opponent. Now when the opponent's meter fills, it too changes a piece on the board. These pieces have skulls on them and start to count down like a time bomb. If the player can match these time bombs before the bomb reaches zero, they're gone. However, if you fail to match them, then it sets off an attack that damages the player. Simple concept but if you have played this kind of game before, you can see how complex it can become with combos. Once you get the hang of it, it works pretty well.

Now the other thing is that you go into battle with a roster of monsters. You can take three with you in a roster at one time and each monster has a color affinity, which makes matches of those colors stronger for your meter gain. There's also a rock-paper-scissors thing where different monsters have strengths and weaknesses against monsters of different affinities, like the Pokemon type system. All of these battles are strung together, for lack of a better word, by 11 dungeon maps. These maps consist of paths that you move along, encountering monsters, finding treasure boxes, discovering new monsters for your roster, and removing obstacles to open new paths. Moving around on these maps is incredibly slow and I don't know why they couldn't let you move faster. On the earlier shorter maps, it's not a big deal but a couple of the later ones are much too big. There's also some sort of story going on here but I'm not gonna lie; I just skipped most of them. The characters are generic looking in the story scenes and the whole story felt like an afterthought from the get go so I stopped caring almost immediately.

Despite the map speed and the immaterial story, I ended up playing this for nearly 30 hours. Once I really understood how the rhythms of the puzzle battles worked, I got more than a little hooked on it. I got stuck in the auto repair shop for almost 6 hours last week and thank god I snagged my Deck before going there because playing [b]Gyromancer[/b] made that time just fly by. It's not the most original game and is clearly trying to ride the coattails of a different game but it really worked for me. The various monsters you have available to use each have their own attack styles that change they way you approach your matches and needing to switch around your roster depending on which types are in the map your are tackling really can keep it fresh. One of the monsters is this ant thing and his action gems causes two locked pieces to appear in the same row or column. A locked piece means you can't rotate any square that contains it. The more pieces you match, it will add more locked pieces to the board, limiting your moves. It can cause you to take massive damage from the enemies bombs but when you manage to get a match on those locked pieces, it causes lightning to shoot out, which chains the other locked pieces, just knocking the opponent senseless. It's one of those satisfying things to see and watching the board explode rules.

I'm not gonna say this game is some sort of hidden masterpiece but I enjoyed it a helluva lot more than I expected to. The early game can feel a little overwhelming and confusing, which seems turn off some people based on the reviews I've seen. It probably comes down to expectations. These kinds of puzzle games are usually much more casual and don't expect too much from the player. [b]Gyromancer[/b] isn't all that casual. It has dungeon maps, level grinding, elemental affinities, and roster management. If you're looking for a match-3 with a little more depth and you've already played the more recent ones, this is probably worth a look, at least if you can get it on sale. At the end of the day, it still is a game made by Pop Cap in their prime and even their worst games from that era are gonna have something worthwhile. [b]Gyromancer[/b] is far from "A Day in the Life" but it's no "Mr. Moonlight" either, even if it's essentially a cover song.

Do you like Bejeweled Twist: the 2008 video game? Because that's what Gyromancer is. It's just Bejeweled Twist the 2008 video game with some very flimsy prop graphics. I guess on the positive side, if you can't get Bejeweled Twist to recognize that you have a graphics card that wasn't made in 2008, Gyromancer may do better. Otherwise, it's a fairly repetitive experience, but sometimes all you want after a long day is some mindless grinding. You can do a lot worse for $6. You can do better, yeah, but you can do a lot worse, too. It's a tepid thumbs-up.

I like collecting the monsters but collecting the monsters make you over-levelled as you have to explore the awful map if you want to find the new monster codes and can't skip fights (you come across monsters while traveling). Even if you don't explore the map to find stuff it's very easy to not die as in this game enemy doesn't move the board. Once you get used to the gyro mechanic the game becomes trivial so I'm not sure if I'm gonna finish it. The game doesn't even come close to the depth of the original Puzzle Quest. The gyro mechanic is something I haven't seen before so that's something but I prefer the usual match-3 if I had the choice.

Coming back to the map it's like a maze and you have limited view of it. You can see a bigger bird's eye view but that is also limited, not the full map. They expect you to draw or figure out the full map by checking the bird's eye view to find out where you haven't been yet. The controls for the map navigation suck too. Music, sound effects and story is ok I guess. I'm on Stage 3. If my opinion changes I might update my review but this is very underwhelming.

Este juego surgió como una broma. Square Enix era la distribuidora de PopCap en Japón, y en una de estas reuniones, el cofundador de PopCap dijo de coña que molaría hacer un Final Fantasy Bejweled, y a Square Enix les encantó la idea. Y aquí está el fruto de aquello. La historia está curiosa, y su toque RPG está muy bien. El juego puede llegar a hacerse muy pesado porque al final el planteamiento no varía. La guionista de la historia es la misma que hizo la de FINAL FANTASY TACTICS ADVANCE y la música es obra de Sekito, guitarrista de los Black Mages (la banda de Nobuo Uematsu) y con una dilatada carrera. Por los 2,39 € que cuesta de oferta merece la pena darle una oportunidad a esta rareza de FINAL FANTASY Candy Crush.

As you might expect of a game this age there are some issues, though it does run on W11.

You'll need a frame limiter, otherwise it will run at 900fps (no joke) and melt your entire laptop, or your desktop's GPU.

Also, it sort of works with touch screens, but seems somewhat finicky.

As to the game play, it hasn't aged that well, or maybe just modern match-3 RPG conventions have evolved so much that my expectations are just wrong all the time. I tried twice, two years apart, to get into this, and just could not.

Histoire: pas très inspirée, avec des personnages fonctions dénués de charisme.
Gameplay : un peu original mais les capacités des créatures sont mal équilibrées (pourquoi je voudrais verrouiller une gemme de compétence ?). Les objets sont trop peu nombreux du coup on hésite à les utiliser et on ne peut pas simplement en acheter malgré les thunes accumulées. Enfin le rythme est trop lent, finir un niveau prend beaucoup trop de temps.
Ambiance: Les graphismes sont corrects même si le design fait penser à des cartes Magic bas de gamme. Les musiques sont sympas.

A ne pas mettre entre toutes les mains.

It's fancier "line up 3" game except you have different colored gems instead of Xs and circles and you can rotate a set of 4 gems in 4 directions, one move at a time, though you are free to move around the board as you want.

- It'd be better as a turn based game. As it is, sorting is in real time and the AI is kicking my tail while I'm getting my bearings.

- The tutorial makes it seem like you have all the time in the world, so it actually misrepresents the game.

+ The visual novel story portion seems interesting, but there's no way to skip the sorting to only view the story.

It'd take way faster reaction time than I have since both you and the AI can sort anywhere on the board at the same time.

It's been a long time since I tried this, and I thought "Hey, maybe today!" But, alas I still don't like this. It's a mix of Pokemon and matching games tied together in some kind of strange monstrosity that's borderline awful.

I say that because it's just... not fun to play at all. You have up to 3 animal/monster things with you that have their own unique attacks, and you can use them to your advantage against certain monsters. Sounds like a recipe for success. But, the matching mechanic is bonkersly bad. You have to rotate pieces in order to match things that will unlock a random gem somewhere that you can then match for an attack. You also have to worry about the skulls from the enemies, which can be snuffed out before they attack or positioned in a way that they won't cause any damage to you. It's unnecessarily complicated, and not fun at all.

Eh, some people might like it but I simply do not recommend it.

Pour ceux qui aiment les jeux à la "bejeweled", le côté RPG en plus. Du "puzzle quest", quoi...mais en un peu plus travaillé niveau "background", je dirais. Une histoire somme toute plutôt classique dans un monde "medieval-fantasy" on l'on combat surtout des bestioles (invoquées ou sauvages) avec ses propres bestioles (oui, vous êtes une sorte de mage-invocateur...il n'y a pas de sous-métier, hein...). Les mécanismes sont cependant un peu obscurs malgré le tutorial...par exemple, mon impression est que le level des creatures qu'on contrôle est quasi-inutile: lvl 1 contre lvl 1, on gagne, puis avec sa même bestiole avec 6 ou 7 niveaux de plus que l'IA on peut perdre contre le même adversaire (pourtant toujours lvl 1, lui)....pas très clair tout ça.
A part ça, que du classique: système d'affinité élémentales, combat de boss, de "mid-boss", quelques objets à utiliser lors des combats, combos (qu'on realise des fois au pif, du coup) des "gils" à gagner (oui oui, des "gils"...square-enix oblige...), le deplacement sur les maps se fait par clic de souris pour avancer d'une "case" (mais n'est pas très pratique et ça ne répond pas toujours bien), sur des chemins balisés mais relativement travaillés pour un jeu de ce type (avec des trésors, des "autels" pour restaurer les pv des creatures...)...bref on a une map vue de dessus qui bien qu'assez basique est plus agréable que de se deplacer sur des cases en tant que telles ou des lignes.
Pas vraiment d' (voire aucune) animations que ce soit aux niveaux des creatures durant les combats ou des persos lors des échanges verbaux (...moi ça me gêne pas, mais certains pourraient trouver ça "cheap"...ceci dit, je connais pas beaucoup de jeu de ce type qui animent leurs persos...bref...).
On peut se lancer sur une map avec trois bebêtes max dans la besace, et on choisit laquelle lancer en combat à chaque rencontre. On peut changer son équipe une fois sur la map générale, histoire de se construire un trio adapté aux types d'elements rencontrés dans chaque map de combat (à condition d'avoir débloqué les dites créatures avec des objets specifique qu'on troive sur les maps de combats).
Je n'ai pas suffisamment d'heure de jeu pour évaluer la profondeur du scénar, mais c'est du square-enix (les musiques de combat me rappellent un peu les FFVII ou VIII, d'ailleurs...) donc peut-être l'objet d'une edit, car je sais pas mais comme dans la serie des FF, ca sent les rebondissements et les coups de théâtre...donc à voir...
Voilà, en esperant vous avoir aidé un peu quand même...

An odd teamup of Popcap and Square Enix trying their own hand at Puzzle Quest gameplay. Maybe they would have had something more successful if it weren't for the odd design decisions

[*] You have to pay currency any time you swap monsters on your team. This discourages experimentation and it doesn't help that a lot of the monsters are bottom-tier useless in your hands due to slow play styles or only countering one specific enemy type.
[*] Currency does not buy items. No on Xbox 360 they wanted to get you to buy a DLC pack with 10 of each item. No such DLC exists on PC, so the items you find in chests are seemingly all you get. Chests also don't respawn on any map I explored, so there's a finite amount for a normal playthrough. I'm fine with it limiting the number of times I can 'meat nuke' a boss, but the magic mirror is way too important especially after the halfway point...
[*] Said halfway point introduces a new mechanic, every twist you do that doesn't result in a match counts as you having twisted twice. It was way too easy without this mechanic, but after it's brought in it feels like a lot of the fun has been scrubbed from the game. If the enemy places an attack in the bottom-left corner (by default you can only twist clockwise), it's almost impossible to remove it in time. Instead gameplay devolves into saving your own attacks to camp the enemy's, which contributes to severely limiting which monsters are viable.
[*] The story feels like an awful stageplay. Laska could have been written out entirely and most maps boil down to 'chase after this person then split apart so you can chase down someone else'. The mastermind was pathetic and they don't even bother to scroll the credits when you beat him. Instead you get some more party chatter then back to the map.

10年那会就玩过，感觉这游戏算是三消RPG的鼻祖之一，不过那时候完全是瞎玩，只凭着自己玩《宝石迷阵旋转》的经验无脑推进，结果卡在了那个50级大蘑菇堵路那关，后来才发现要让螳螂吃掉它们，结果我把螳螂先杀了，就卡关了。之后搞了个汉化版才逐渐搞懂了剧情和玩法，甚至还写了个攻略，前几天整理电脑的攻略文本时意外发现了它，但看起来还缺很多内容，于是最近准备重打一遍然后发个指南，帮助大家的同时也算纪念一下我和这个游戏的点点滴滴，更是纪念自己美好的童年时光。

这游戏每个关卡是要重复游玩的，第一遍先过剧情，关卡很多地方要等第一次通关后再开，因此第一次进关卡时不妨直奔任务目标，别开箱子，等重复游玩时再慢慢探索，这样高分成就才好拿。中期开放四向之阵后就可以刷50级大蘑菇练级了，然后拿Motu，再用Motu拿到Resheph，再用这俩拿到古代龙，基本主线就可以横着走了。

A Popcap/Square Enix collab that's a match 3 monster battler. It seemed okay at first but the overland maps that constantly spawn enemies, along with some of the more irritating enemy monster abilities turn the game into a slog.

I do not recommend this game!
First, I want to say that I wanted to like the game.
It seemed like a low-pressure match 3 gems kind of thing, that didn't demand anything from me, and even had a bit of story.
However, 2 issues appeared. 1 with the game experience, and 1 with the technical side of the game itself.
The experience issue was simple, the fact that I couldn't match the gems counterclockwise, but only clockwise. It kept bothering me, for some reason. I could have learned to deal with it, if not for the other issue.
I have a fairly high-end computer, and the game could run in a browser on a phone, so I didn't think about computer power at all. Sadly it seems the programmers made the same mistake.
I noticed a strange whine from my computer, that disappeared when I shifted away from the game.
When I enabled FPS measurements, I hit just above 1400 frames per second.
without any kind of cap, my computer was trying to tear itself apart.
That's when I uninstalled the game.

TLDR:
Annoying controls. No cap for graphics. Hit 1400 FPS. Don't install it!

This is an addictingly fun game.

Gyromancer is one of those games I try to play every few years and fail miserably, apparently forgetting just how bad it is. At a glance it looks appealing, a match 3 game involving what are basically Pokemon. Unfortunately it's marred by repetitive battles that are a real slog, combined with increasingly harsh penalties if you don't make a match on a turn.

So this review is a really a note to myself in disguise. Replay Puzzle Quest, or even the much maligned Puzzle Quest: Galactrix or Puzzle Kingdoms over this.

If you like Puzzle Quest, don't play this and stick to Puzzle Quest.

The UI really did not age well and the game crashes constantly if played in Full Screen.

You can only "twist" (ie. rotate 4 gems) clockwise unless you use a consumable item to rotate counterclockwise once. This limiting factor plus the fact that you eventually get penalised for any move you make which does not cause a match make for some questionable game play. This is compounded by the abilities of monsters you face, some of which will replace gems with rocks or lock gems making your moves extremely limited.

The game also has this weird Pokemon aspect to it where you build a beast roster with different gem affinities and abilities of which you choose any 3 at once to go battle. Their level is tied to yours but each beast has a level cap which seems like it was added just to force you to find more Beasts with higher level caps.

There's a story, I guess, but after you read the first few screens of dialogue, you will absolutely be clicking the skip button to avoid any more of it and not think about it ever again.

Ein cooles Game das eine experimentelle Nische besetzt.

Popcaps und Square Enix ... zwei Studios die eigentlich nichts verbindet. Die einen kochen digitales Crack in Form von Handygames, die anderen erzählen bombastische Legenden und packen zwangsweise ein wenig Gameplay dazwischen.

Meine Theorie ist das beide Studius sich irgendwann an ner Bar getroffen haben, kräftig gesoffen und am nächsten morgen peinlich berührt neben einander aufwachten. 9 Monate Später kam Gyromancer.

Ein Match-3-Game dessen einziges Alleinstellungsmerkmal ist das man nicht 2 Perlen vertauscht sondern 4 Perlen dreht. Dazu noch Artwork, Musik und Story von Square Enix draufgesetzt und fertig ist das Game.

Die Musik ist für diese Art von Spiel Bombastisch, das Artwork gut gezeichnet aber kaum bewegt (Auf der Karte bewegen wir uns als unanimierter Sprite, in den Storysequenzen sind geht die Animation nicht über gelegentliches Links-Rechts-Wackeln und ein paar Effekte wie Blutspritzer hinaus).

Die Story selbst ist typisch Japanisch darin das die eine tiefe Hintergrundstory hat, die nirgends erzählt wird. Oberflächlich sind wir ein unsterblicher Magier der nach dem Mord an ein paar Adligen den Rebellen in einen magischen Wald folgt um ggf. den Erben zu finden und zu retten. Dieser Wald verschließt sich allerdings alle paar Jahre um den neuen Herscher des Waldes zu ermitteln und in dieser Zeit wachsen die Bewohner zu Alptraumhafter Größe und hauen sich im Kayu-Style die Hucke voll.

Man bildet vor dem Betreten der Map ein Team aus 3 eigenen Monstern die einen dann durch die Kämpfe begleiten. Diese Monster gibts es nochmal in verschiedenen "Ausbaustufen" und in 6 Elementen / Farben a 2 Monstern (sprich 2 Rote, 2 Blaue etc.). Jedes Monster hat einen unterschiedlichen Spielstil und manipuliert das Spielbrett auf unterschiedliche Weise. Während der Feuerdrache sehr schnell sehr viele Angriffe auflädt die (wenn man sie sammelt) in einem explosiven Schlagwirbel den Gegner zerfetzen baut der Baumgeist sich eine große Regeneration auf und vergiftet den Gegner, so das dieser langsam verendet während der Baum sich stetig hochheilt. Die Unterschiedlichen Styles der Monster sorgen für reichlich Abwechslung und interessante Matchups. Einige Elemente haben dazu noch Vorteile gegenüber anderen und und und... insgesamt gibt es zwar "nur" 12 Standard-Monster (Mit je 3 Ausbaustufen) und zum Ende des Spiels nochmal 6 Ultimative-Monster. Aber allein die Teamauswahl ist für ein Pop-Caps game überraschend komplex.

Die Kämpfe finden im im Match-3 Modus statt, wobei, wie eingangs erwähnt, die Perlen nicht getauscht sondern gedreht werden. Wenn man jetzt eine Perlenkombo vervollständigt laden sich die Angriffe des eigenen und des gewählten Monsters auf. Dies geschieht schneller wenn man Kombinationen in der "Farbe" des jeweligen Monsters bildet, wobei die Farben für die jeweiligen Elemente des Monsters stehen, Rot für Feuer, Blau für Wasser, Gelb für Blitz usw. . Wenn ein Angriff aufgeladen ist überträgt er sich auf eine Perle auf dem Spielbrett und explodiert wenn man eine Kombination mit dieser Perle bildet, bzw. bei Gegnern (da der Gegner keine Züge bekommt) nachdem ein Timer abläuft. Sollte man eine gegnerische Perle vor Ablauf des Timers mit einer Kombo vom Feld nehmen ist der gegnerische Angriff somit pariert. Sein eigenes Puzzlegeschick hat somit direkte Auswirkungen auf den Kampf.

Das System ist für ein Match 3 Spiel ausgesprochen komplex und interessant. Ich kann die Reviews verstehen die das System als zu komplex bejammern. Im Vergleich zum Puzzle Quest oder ähnlichen Vertretern raucht hier überraschend hart die Birne.

Im Fazit:
Spannendens komlexes Gameplay, verwirrte Story, gute Musik, bescheidene Grafik. Dieses Spiel ist kein Meisterwerk der Spielgeschichte ABER ein Meisterwerk der Match-3 Games. Ich mag das Genre und habe seit Gyromancer kein Spiel gefunden das in diesem Genre ein annähernd ähnliches Spielerlebnis bildet. Also ganz klare Kaufempfehlung meinerseits an alle Match-3 Fans die mal den Kopf benutzen wollen.

No. Just no.
I cannot in any way shape or form recommend this game with its garbage match mechanics.

It's a match 3 game. Let it be a match 3 game. Instead these "clever" chuckle f*cks completely sh*t the bed and screwed the pooch for one of the WORST match 3 systems that I could think of. If you want to read me rant and metaphorically crap in this game's open mouth more, please read on dear viewer!

Here's the deal:
Movement requires pieces move clockwise.
Doesn't sound too bad right? Well in the legendary words of Billy Mays: BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!
You have to select a group of FOUR pieces in a square pattern to move all at once to move clockwise with a piece you want/need to move.
FOUR ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pieces in a square HAVE to move clockwise. I cannot stress enough that it can ONLY go clockwise and you HAVE to select four pieces all at once to do the same thing.
It's SQUAREenix guys! It's a pun! It's f*cking hilarious! Don't you get it?!

Now that I've repeated the masochistic dumpster fire of mechanics enough for a Manchurian Candidate to get activated,..
It's the main mechanic of the game. This mechanic alone gets it a massive hell no from me dawg.
I can't tell you how frustrating it is to try and set up combos with these mechanics while the enemy is blowing sh*t up on the board to skullf*ck any expectation of fun.
Got two pieces next to each other with the same "color" and only two turns before they get exploded by an enemy attack?
Sucks to suck, the clockwise rotations just aren't in your favor kid. Better luck next time.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the "enemy" had to move pieces too so they could be on a level playing field of madness in order to get anything done, but nah. That'd risk you being able to block them and having any fun you silly bastard. We can't have that here, what the hell were you thinking?

I would need to genuinely sit down and think of a way to make these mechanics any worse, yet still playable. I'm not sure I could actually do that Herculean feat. I'd need a f*cking poet to write an epic of my labours. Even if this game was free I'd feel ripped off with my time. Imagine how it must feel to pay for it.

P.S. - The dialogue and story is written like a 14 year old tween read too much Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, and King Arthur and got his "game dev" dad to let him write the script.

tl:dr. Don't buy it. It's awful.

This is not a bad game, exactly. And I got 15 hours of fun out of it...until things got annoying. Here's the rundown:

The Good:
The actual match-3 battle gameplay is just fine. Different than PuzzleQuest, but fun.
The monster and character portraits are high quality.
The monster collection mechanic is also just fine.

The meh:
There are a lot of other mechanics that aren't clearly introduced.
The complicating mechanics that are later introduced (that basically discourage moves that don't immediately result in a match) aren't really that much fun.
Music is fine, but more variation would have helped.
How do monsters get experience? How does my level affect anything? I'm still a little confused.

The bad:
The story and dialog are a load of pretentious nonsense.
I'm fine with grinding. Ask anyone. But there comes a level where the bottleneck battle is 20 levels higher than your monsters, even if you've been grinding up till that point. Ain't nobody got time for that.
The special combo level (where you have to make a chain reaction that makes five matches) is very annoying. I've spent 20 minutes trying to get through it before giving up.

The verdict:
A great game (for about 15 hours) that eventually gets ground into the dirt by the necessity for grinding and overly difficult 'bonus' levels. Worth it if it goes on heavy discount. If not, not so much.

This is one of those ones where you want to give it both a thumbs up and a thumbs down. The actual game play is good, marred only by a sudden difficulty spike a third of the way through the game. The story - especially the writing - is awful.

The game is a collaboration between Square Enix and Popcap who seem to have both seen the cross-over hit Puzzlequest and decided they wanted a piece of the action. The core game is Bejewelled Twist with some extra running around mazes. You have different beasts to use in the matches and the affect how often special gems appear and what abilities they trigger. It does keep you on your toes strategy-wise. The main criticism of the game-play is that the rules suddenly change after four levels in a rather significant way. It does not make it easier. To be fair, without the change the game would get stale before the end, but its introduction is done poorly.

The packaging around the game-play is pitiful. The story is nonsense and the writing is terrible. I'm pretty sure the good guys were spending most of the time trying to suppress a popular uprising so the ruling classes could maintain their privilege. On top of this the art work (all static) looks like a cheap knock-off of the art from old dungeons and dragons books. The hero and heroine are eternally stuck in dramatic poses without any context.

I should add that the graphics are stuck at 720p. This was standard for Popcap games of the era, they didn't target people with the latest gaming rigs. What graphics options there are can be turned up to the maximum on any computer of the past decade (possibly two). Since most people will have been playing at at least 1080p it will be noticeable, but you get used to it.

Einer der schlimmsten Grinder, die man sich ausdenken kann. Langweilig, heftiges RNG und ein Spielspaß raubendes "Fehlerelement", dazu keinerlei taktische Freiheiten. Ein rundum böses Spiel, das SpielerInnen leider durch ein sehr interessantes, "casual"-wirkendes Konzept einlullt und wie eine Spinne einfängt.

Ganz ehrlich: Die ersten Stunden kann man mit Gyromancer viel Spaß haben. Man kann sogar leicht und beschwingt durch schon geschaffte Abschnitte gehen, um zu versuchen alle "Erfolge" zu farmen oder einfach nur sein Level zu steigern. Man kann dabei leicht über einen Daumen hoch nachdenken. Aber dann...

Was ist Gyromancer? Es ist:
1. Eine Fantasy-Geschichte, die sehr oberflächlich ist, aber mit schönen 2D-Charakteren für eine gewisse "Dranbleiben"-Stimmung sorgt.
2. Ein ewiggleicher Kampf: 1 Monster vs. 1 Monster. Wer zuerst auf 0 HP ist, verliert. Wir haben stets 3 Monster im Köcher, nicht mehr, nicht weniger. Alle Monster haben Maxlevel, sollten also regelmäßig durch Stärkere ausgetauscht werden. Außerdem gibt es, wie bei Pokemon und Co. Stärken und Schwächen nach dem Schere-Stein-Papier (+ einiges mehr) Prinzip.
Wir wählen also vor jedem Kampf eines unserer 3 Monster mit möglichst Pfeil nach oben (Vorteil), Nichts (neutral) oder, zur Not, Pfeil nach unten (Nachteil) und natürlich möglichst viel HP. Die Kämpfe entscheiden sich aber nicht durch Mana oder Fähigkeiten, sondern durch
3. das Bejeweled/CandyCrush etc. 3. Element des Spiels. Wir bilden Reihen mit 3+ gleichen Farben in waagerechter oder senkrechter Richtung. Haben wir 1 unserer max. 3 Fähigkeiten "aufgeladen", erscheint zufällig ein "verstärkter" Stein. Lösen wir diesen aus, gibt es einen Effekt (meistens Schaden) auf den Gegner. Dieser operiert exakt identisch, mit einem Unterschied: Er muss nichts fertigstellen, sondern aktiviert seine Fähigkeiten einfach über Zeit und unsere "Drehungen". Es erscheint ein Totenkopf-markierter Gegnerstein. Wir haben dann x-Züge, um diesen in eine 3+-Reihe zu bringen oder anders zu zerstören. Gelingt das nicht, löst er aus und der Gegner macht Schaden oder einen Effekt.

Anfangs ist das Spiel fair und handzahm. Die Gegner sind level 1, 2, 3, so wie wir. Wir leveln sehr schnell und unsere Monster werden stärker. Schnell kriegen wir "neue Monster" und schaffen, Story betreffend, einen Abschnitt nach dem anderen.

Aber dann schlägt das Spiel GNADENLOS zurück.

Auf einmal wird, aus dem Nichts, eine neue Strafe eingeführt. Jedes "unnötige Drehen" kostet Extra-Speed für Gegner-Fähigkeiten. Der Witz: Das Spiel macht es unmöglich, diese Drehungen zu vermeiden.

Aber es wird noch viel, viel besser:

Fast kein Monster verfügt über "Heilung". Auch unsere 4 "Hilfsgegenstände" können das nicht. Diese sind zwar nützlich, aber stark limitiert. Selbst mit 30.000 Gold können wir nirgendwo "einkaufen". Wir können uns also entweder in den ersten Abschnitten zu Tode farmen oder damit leben, dass die Gegenstände kaum eine Hilfe sind (weil immer aus).
Es gibt manchmal in Leveln "Heilungsschreine", aber diese sind einmalig und heilen nur anteilig, nie voll.

Sind wir besiegt oder zu low, müssen wir das Level verlassen. Konsequenz: Voller Reset. Alle Monster wieder auf 100%, alle wieder da, alle Absperrungen etc. --> Der Grind kennt keine Gnade.

Auf Abschnitt 6, schon 10+ Stunden im Spiel, zahlreiche Abschnitte im Bereich 1-4 MEHRFACH gesäubert, auf Level 30+ gegrindet, warten plötzlich LEVEL 50 (!) Monster an unpassierbaren Abschnitten. Selbst mit VOLLEM LEBEN, Monster mit Vorteil (Pfeil nach oben) und "Durchbruch" (eine Art Super-Booster), werden wir in der Pfeife geraucht. Der Gegner, obwohl seine Fähigkeiten kaum Schadenspunkte machen sollten UND er einen verrückten Self-Heal hat, spawnt alle 5-6 Drehungen 5-6 Totenköpfe gleichzeitig. Es ist, und das meine ich völlig ernst, UNMÖGLICH (oder zumindest zu 99%), diese zu entschärfen. Folge: Rausch-artige Schadenskanonade, die du höchstens 2 Runden überlebst.

Was will das Spiel hier von dir? Das du stundenlang Level 50 grindest? Das man irgendein spezielles Monster nur dafür braucht? Ich weiß es nicht.

Das Spiel hat keinen Schwierigkeitsgrad. Du kannst nicht mal eben "auf leicht" stellen. Man wird, so tief im Spiel, einfach knallhart daran gehindert die Story zu Ende zu spielen. Keine Rede von den "Endleveln" wie "Rivels Probe", wo man nur noch lauter 50+ Monstern begegnet oder an Steinen Prüfungen wie "Kombo 5+", "Kettenlevel 5" etc. machen soll.

Am Schlimmsten ist das verdammte Zufallselement. Der RNG-Faktor ist zum Kotzen. Mal spawnt eine deiner verstärkten Fähigkeiten auf einem Stein, der WEIT UND BREIT keine gleichen Farben hat. Mal spawnt er in der tiefsten Ecke. Und die Totenkopf-Gegner genauso. Mal kann man easy mit 1-2 Drehungen die Steine "entschärfen", mal weiß man schon den Moment des Spawns: Selbst in 7 Zügen finde ich dafür keine Verbindung. Konsequenz: Man kann nur noch Schadensbegrenzung betreiben, weiß aber genau: Ich krieg gleich schön Schaden.

Warum kann man diese Items nicht einfach endlos einsetzen? Wenigstens ein Refill nach jedem Kampf? Oder ein Händler dafür?
Warum wird es überhaupt so schwer bis unmöglich gemacht, dass man die Drehrichtung verändert oder Dots entfernt?
Warum ist Heilung so schwer bis gar nicht zu bekommen?
Was soll das Element der "Strafe für unnötiges Drehen"? Es ist nichts anderes als ein kranker KI-Buff, der den Spieler massiv einschränkt und jeden Spaß, jedes Knobeln und Ausprobieren nimmt.
Warum kann man wenigstens die Story nicht ohne mega-Hustle abschließen und dann später diesen "Bonus-Content" auf Level 50+ machen, wenn man Bock hat (oder nicht...)?

Ich hatte schon nach ca. 2 Stunden überlegt, ob ich das Spiel wieder aufhöre, weil es einfach wirklich WENIG bietet. Es ist immer Monster vs. Monster, EXP-Grind und eben die Steinchen drehen. Aber der Story zuliebe wollte ich es doch durchziehen. Jetzt, nach 11 Stunden ernsthaften Versuchens, bereue ich meine Entscheidung. Das Spiel sagt mir dreist: Spiel einfach noch 10 Stunden, dann bist du Level 40-50 und kannst (vielleicht) Abschnitt 7 oder 8 erreichen.

Du kannst mich mal am ***** lecken, Gyromancer! Selbst Grinds in Diablo, WoW oder anderen Spielen fühlen sich nicht so grenzdebil wie hier an.

Fazit: FINGER WEG, wenn ihr nach Anschauen der Trailer oder nach einer halben Stunde nicht merkt, dass ihr dieses Klötzchen-Drehen abgöttisch toll findet. Dieses Spiel wird SEHR SCHWER und ist ein mieser GRIND.

If you like Bejeweled Twist, this game is fire
It has the same problems as Bejeweled Twist (idle moves being VERY punishing, notably) but if you like Bejeweled Twist that won't bother you
Anyone into the Match-3 genre should at least give it a try. Simpler and more focused on the puzzle mechanics than Puzzle Quest, but play that too it's very good

I almost want to recommend this game, since the dialogue is VERY campy and silly, and knowing Square Enix, that aspect was definitely not intentional, which frankly makes it even funnier. However, no amount of goofy facsimiles of medieval speech patterns can save this game's terrible gameplay.

In the beginning, it's not that bad, albeit a bit weird. It has similar gameplay to Bejeweled Twist, but instead of earning special gems from matching 4 or 5 gems in a row, they're earned by filling a bar on the HUD that corresponds to your beast's color identity. There's also a Pokemon-esque type matchup chart, but it's not relevant very often. Your special gems can be matched to deal damage to the enemy, and the enemy's special gems are treated like time bombs from Twist: they count down from an arbitrary number each time you make a move, and when they expire, their effect deals damage to you.

It's a very strange system, no doubt inspired by the surging popularity of Puzzle Quest at the time of the game's development. However, every other aspect of the game seems to clash with this battle system.

- Battles can take a VERY long time, especially against enemies with high health or fast-filling bars. Add in the fact that each level only has two or three enemy types, and you'll quickly get REALLY sick of certain enemies.

- Nearly every level contains monster dens that churn out the same type of enemy, each of which must be battled along a linear path in order to fight another boss monster inside the den in order to destroy it. At least the enemies spawned from the den disappear after you kill it.

- The game has a very irritating sense of how to make battles challenging, From the most recent two bosses that I faced, the former had a mechanic that let them run from battle without placing a gem on the field to do so, forcing you to replay the same battle on a strict timer over and over until you whittled down their health. The latter instantly placed a gem on the field with a 3-turn timer, forcing me to take unavoidable damage, and this ability also has a short cooldown, so it kept churning out short timers constantly throughout the fight. I can only imagine what the later bosses are like.

- Something that I had to discover for myself (since the reviews conveniently left this detail out) is that when a certain story event triggers, the game is irreversibly changed so that making an "idle spin" (a move that doesn't actively match gems) incurs a penalty. Whenever you make an idle spin, enemy action bars are filled dramatically, and timers count down an additional time. This feels HORRIBLE to deal with, since you often have to make idle spins to avoid taking damage, and certain abilities that already felt unreliable and clunky now feel even worse, since you have to constantly match gems to avoid the penalty. In addition, there's no algorithm like in Zen Mode of normal Bejeweled that guarantees matches will appear. There's a fairly good chance (especially in longer battles) that you are forced to either take a penalty or use one of your consumable items.

- On a different note, the music is not good. It's very by-the-book fantasy music, and it almost sounds like stock music. There's also almost no variation in the battle music. One track for normal enemies, one track for "dangerous" enemies, one track for bosses, and presumably one track for the final boss. It's mind-numbing to have to listen to the same track over and over and over again.

Overall, this game is funny to watch, but horrid to play. I doubt any streamers have played this game, but that's probably the best way to experience this one, rather than spend your hard-earned Gil on this strange little satchel of gems.

マップ移動も戦闘も操作がもっさりしてる。ここのレスポンスは全然早いほうがいいと思う
召喚モンスターはスキルを持っているけど、自由に選べるわけじゃない。
ついでに攻撃するには召喚モンスターの色のジェムを消してスキルジェムを発生させてそれを消すという
手順を踏むので面倒で仕方ない。別に戦いに入れば戦略性はあんまり無い・・う～ん・・
マップも大きいわりにスクロールで全体確認も出来なくて移動も遅く、いちいち一回一回クリックするし、
モンスターのぬしを倒せば周りのモンスターも消えるけど雑魚モンスターの量が無駄に多い
なので本当にレスポンスにイライラする。二面あたりでやめてしまう人も居そうだ・・
全体のもっさり感さえ無ければ、詰むことのないパズル、絵の魅力と良いところもあるので惜しい
値段を加味して一応お勧めに入る感じです

While I do enjoy the match-3 nature of the game, I can't recommend this game in 2022.
Why? It didn't age well.
Can't change resolution, stuck at a very basic low res state.
Also game keeps crashing for some reason.

I found Gyromancer to be a very enjoyable puzzle-RPG hybrid. I was intimidated by some of the reviews here, which said that the game has horrible performance issues. Well, by some strange miracle, Gyromancer fortunately ran well on my PC, with no crashes and no deleted data. Please note however that this was just my experience, so people could still encounter technical problems on their computers.

Two quick notes about performance. Firstly, the game has an uncapped framerate, and while it did not tax my graphics card all that much, the game might increase the temperature significantly on certain computers. Some cards are more vulnerable than others, so if you have had problems with games with unlimited FPS in the past, do take into account that this game also has uncapped FPS and might cause some fuss. The second thing worth mentioning is that, while the game did not delete save game data while I played it, IT DELETED IT ENTIRELY WHEN I UNINSTALLED. I was aware this might happen, so I only uninstalled the game AFTER i beat the final boss. So please be aware that uninstalling or modifying the game in any way might cause you to lose progress. It really sucks that such a thing happens in the first place, but as long as you take certain steps and avoid doing certain things, you will not encounter many problems.

I am saying all this because, despite the technical hiccups you might experience, Gyromancer is undeniably fun and I say it is worth sticking with it despite the problems. Fighting monsters is very addictive, even if it gets a bit repetitive near the end. The game does punish idle moves later in the story, but this is not as crippling as some people have suggested, and you will actually get used to it and learn to think more strategically. There are very few attacks that you cannot avoid, even with the idle moves penalty.

The game is very grind heavy, which I found is a double edged sword. On one hand, it can be frustrating, such as the final boss, which required me to grind almost three hours in order to be strong enough to beat him. It is essential (heck, even the help menu in the game says it) that you should always be at least a couple of levels over your opponent. The final boss was a bit frustrating because it has two forms you have to beat, although, if you beat the first form and then come back, you will only have to deal with the second form, so in the end it was fair, even if a bit frustrating.

On the other hand, it is very satisfying to level up, because enemies, as far as I could tell, DO NOT have level scaling. Which means that if you have trouble beating an enemy, all you have to do is level up, come back and crush the son of a b***h! While I consider Puzzle Quest to be the better game, this is one area where Gyromancer is superior to PQ.

There are a few other minor flaws (such as how you find so few items, and once you use them up they are gone), but overall, Gyromancer is still one of the best puzzle-RPGs out there, and it deserves at least a try if you're a fan of the genre.

the entire seems like a good concept, however this game basically stalls every so often and freezes the game screen. Changing the settings in the game does not help matters, and running it in compatibility mode also does nothing. I originally bought this game many years ago and only now got around to it, do not recommend as it does not work properly with modern computer builds.

A standard match-3 type of game. For some reason they felt obligated to add a ton of needless complications and story line which gets in the way of just playing a casual game.

On top of it the tech is bad, as you can't set a resolution and there's no steam achievements.

The game is good, with a nice story, but the ones that sells the game don't do anything about the save being deleted if you uninstal the game, or if you have to verify the integrity of it on steam... so if you like this game, buy it... but, don't think square will do anything for this game players...
and yes, i tried sending an email to them asking for help, and they didn't even cared about resolving it

I love everything about the concept of this game, but this PC port is just unplayable. The instability on three different machines, combined with the save data being located in the program files makes progressing through the game a fight against the software every step of the way. If you can get it on xbox 360 this game might be an enjoyable experience, but for PC, other puzzle RPGs are a much better use of your time.

Gyromancer is a fun, easy time-waster built on essentially the same premise as Pokemon and Bejeweled, but with a twist (ha HA). Trying to master all the different match challenges and uncover the different trophies in each stage provides a nice mixture of difficulty and entertainment. I would definitely recommend this for your Steam Deck when you get one, it'll kill help kill a lot of time.

Weirder than seeing PopCap's logo following Square Enix's one is to behold the aggressive breed born from such unlikely partnership.

Gyromancer is somewhat oppressive in many levels: characters art pieces can be surprisingly wicked, the plot is dark and gory, and the gameplay--as far as gem-match puzzles go--aim to constrain the player instead of encourage creative problem solving. In fact, even simple actions as spinning gems counter clock-wise (something that could be intuitively pulled off with a right click of the mouse) cost an item, and must be executed sparingly. As it piles up towards the end, some concepts communicate badly and puzzles manage to become even cryptic, an unthinkable feature for an apparently casual setup.

But it still hooks. Finding, unlocking and training gorgeous beasts proves to be rewarding--and so does simply following the classic-yet-nicely-told story. To the point it's easy to take "twisting gems" for granted and end taking the game more seriously than it has any rights to be.

Gyromancer succeeds by not only dressing PopCap's stuff in a beautiful coat of paint, but also by adding meaning to mundane gameplay mechanics.

Gyromancer plays like a visual novel with match-three twist mechanics for combat. I really enjoyed this game. Playing a summoner who progresses by unlocking new creatures or more powerful versions of creatures is a really cool idea. The constant dilemma between setting up the board for a big combo attack versus defending against the opponent's damage is also really interesting. If you like match-three games the puzzles are very challenging, specially if you want to get all the in-game achievements.

I played this game on the Xbox 360 when it first came out. It's basically a clone of Bejeweled Twist with a monsters, battles and a story. I was looking forward to playing the game again, but I can't really recommend it on PC. For some reason, the game keeps crashing and I have absolutely no idea why. Seems like it is poorly optimized for PC, or maybe just my system. Worth buying when it's ultra cheap if you don't mind constant crashes.

I'm a sucker for puzzle games of any sort, but unless you get it for free or deep discount, don't bother. I got it through a Humble Bundle, and played it offline because I'm just that bored in a place with little internet.

The core gameplay is middling. Bejeweled Twist is a fun take on the match 3 format, but the game never really fleshes out the RPG elements. If you're decent at match 3, you can cruise through almost everything by just picking a set of your highest HP summons, ignoring their individual abilities entirely.

The plot is complete rubbish. It's as though the developers weren't given a narrative team, and so they went to a company party and found a narrative designer from another project at Square, and asked them while everyone was drunk as skunks for a fast plot outline. And that's what they put in the game, without editing, clarification, or expanding upon. I review bad books *professionally* and this made less sense than a good number of books I've reviewed. The art is nice, though, no complaints there (ok, Laska is drawn very much for the male gaze, but what else is new?).

Accessibility: Sound is irrelevant to gameplay. Controls cannot be remapped, and consist of mouse and left click or click-drag. Gems have both different colors and different shapes, so it's at least color blind friendly.

J'ai apprécié que le jeu soit traduit en français, et son tutoriel.
Mais celui ci est trop léger, on ne comprend pas bien ensuite ce qu'il se passe parfois lors des combats, combos...
Le scénario est insipide, on combat avec des insectes ou des oiseaux on ne sait trop pourquoi. Tout est imposé, peu de personnalisation. Les musiques sont communes. Les graphismes assez ternes et laids.

Gets old quick when you can't make matches. You can get stuck within a single match, the algorithm for potential matches is really bad compared to Puzzle Quest. Then you have to make no-match moves until you can get matches again. That's fine, until they start penalizing you for it. Then the fun is sucked out entirely.

小学时接触的，现在已经大学了。最近发现steam上有这玩意，又重温了一下。
个人感觉游戏的模式让人眼前一亮，消除进行战斗虽然不是独一无二的想法，但是将消除的特点完美融入战斗系统是很赞的。这也直接使得游戏规则与操作十分简单。本人大概打了全流程7，8遍了（之前都是下的盗版），大部分战斗都可以无伤无空转完成，正努力把每一关的分数刷上万。这个游戏的核心玩法算是高效的消除。这要求玩家在尽可能短的步数内做到连锁，瓦解或者联击以及特殊颜色宝石的消除。因此游戏消除的时间毫无限制。游戏的立绘与音乐都很赞，能力宝石的特效也算是加分项。
美中不足的地方也有不少，其一就是游戏元素太单调，各种族魔兽的不同阶段改动太少。再就是后期游戏趣味降低，如果不慎把等级练的太高，就会很没意思。魔林消也很鸡肋（连消等级到五之后接着消满一圈槽造成极大伤害），因为一般消到等级五就已经结束战斗了。不同魔兽的强度不平衡，例如实战里瑞舍夫与古代龙的实力几乎碾压所有未突破的魔兽，在刷分中蚂蚁与枭也强于绝大多数魔兽，至于敌人，除非是跨越十级以上的战斗（可以做到），一般来说不存在极具挑战性的敌人。（当然，如果你在猎物丛林里先杀死螳螂恶魔，那么你将在跨20余级对原始真菌的战斗中大大提升水平（被虐））
虽然这玩意应该凉了也大概不会有什么人买，不过确实算是美好的回忆，期待一下肯定不存在的续作吧~

The game has that addictive feel of Puzzle Quest, with some unique mechanics of its own.
That said, some of the beasts' abilities are straightforward broken. It somehow feels like it was supposed to be a multiplayer game (some skills are just uselesss when playing against AI) but then it is single player only.

I cannot, however, say that I haven't enjoyed it. It is a mixed bag for sure.

J'aime normalement beaucoup les bejeweled mais le systeme proposé (tourner uniquement en sens rotation horaire dans une limite de 4 cases) est horrible. Le jeu est en plus assez moche et surtout les commandes immondes, j'ai mis plusieurs minutes a arriver à sortir d'un cycle de clic / message impromptu indiquant un obstacle !

This game is absurdly punishing and unnecessarily difficult. Also its design is completely unintuitive and sometimes very frustrating. At least it has no timer.
So, you have to essentially do a sequence of battles in each level, but your health carries over, Pokemon Elite 4 style. Problem is, both recovering health and avoiding damage become nigh impossible as the game progresses. So it's very tough at the later stages. Also, there's no difficulty setting for whatever reason.
The grid jams every so often (a sign that probably they did a color too many) and the penalty for twisting without making a match becomes very high. Attacking is unnatural and not actually easy to do, defending comes down to a bit of chance most of the time. And, the worst of all, no matter your skill level, if you do not get significantly lucky, the opponent will perform better than you, due to mechanics only!
Even some small details are weird. It features a type disadvantage chart (Pokemon-style) except one color has 4 strenghts and 0 weaknesses (out of 7 colors!). It does not let you twist in the other way, except if you use a somewhat rare and consumable item. (Like, I played games with such a restriction, but why tempt the player with freedom and then lock it behing item grinding?) Although the levels are built to be replayed and explored, the game features a level cap which will force you to constantly ballet and not quite get used to your beasts.
I might come back to it one day and finish it just for the challenge. Right now, though, I'm still bitter by all the unnecessary frustration.
For a much better implemented RPG-match fusion, Puzzle Kingdoms plays much nicer in many ways.

Like many said before, this game is very similar to Puzzle Quest. But somehow ... well, it's kind of lacking the charme PQ has and the story didn't get me at all, I skipped all texts and concentrated only on the battles. And that's why I didn't choose the thumb down, 'cause when you ignore everything but the "action"-part the game can be entertaining, at least for a couple of hours. It's less fun than PQ but doesn't deserve a downvote either.

Gra logiczna, przypomina trochę puzzle questa. Różnica jest w tym, że tutaj obracasz kamienie cztery w prawo oraz że przeciwnik nie ma ruchów własnych. Tylko pojawiają się bomby z czasem, które jak nie rozbroisz to ci odbiorą HP. Zbiera się zestaw po 3 kamienie tego samego typu.

[h1] Match-3, worse than the alternatives[/h1]

[b]TL;DR: Buy Puzzle Quest instead[/b]

[b]Gyromancer[/b] Is a game of its time, which means it's developed by PopCap and it's a Match-3 game. What makes it different is its Fantasy setting and RPG-like elements, proof that Square-Enix was also here.

The game itself is simple. You choose a [strike]Pokémon[/strike] Sacred Beast to fight for you, with one or more special attacks. Then, onto battle: you choose a 2x2 grid and rotate all gems within in a clockwise fashion [spoiler]and only clockwise![/spoiler] to match 3 gems of the same color. When you make enough matches, a special gem appears onto the field and when you match [i]that[/i] gem, you attack.

With time, you unlock new Beasts, with higher level caps and different attacks, so there's some variety there. Every map is a series of paths where monsters roam and treasure lies; you may fight minibosses, defeat enemy spawners and find items.

But the game has many design features that are just not admissible. The whole game can be controlled by mouse only, but you're never told how to use several UI elements (like, for example, right-clicking is akin to going "back"). The help is a bit buried and its text is not easily comprehensible. When using the keyboard to control movement in the maps, it's not always clear where exactly you're moving (since the paths themselves don't follow nicely an 8-directional scheme). [b]The game also sometimes crashes completely out of the blue in my computer, with no other option but to cast the window to a different (virtual) desktop and end the task from the Task Manager.[/b]

Gameplay-wise, Gyromancer has a feature I really dislike: there comes a point relatively early in the campaign where you start to be penalized for rotating gems without making a match (in game these are called [i]Idle turns[/i]). The problem with these is twofold: 1) you're guaranteed to come up with scenarios where there is simply no possible match, and 2) the enemy attacks can only be neutralized by using these idle turns (enemy attacks are gems that must be matched in a limited number of turns). Every idle turn makes enemy attacks more frequent, which sometimes gets a bit frustrating.

Overall it's not a bad game, but it has enough annoyances that it merits to be skipped. And the gameplay seems a lot worse once you've played [b]Puzzle Quest[/b]. Get that one instead
