Grey Cubes is a modern variation on the brick-breaker-type game, based on real-time physics and three-dimensional gameplay (not just 3d look). Minimalist in style, with clean graphics and deep, original soundtrack.

i only mildly enjoy this genre but Grey Cubes was an amazing experience. the physics-based gameplay was executed so well and i didn't find any issues with it, really. the boards were not consistently amazing but i don't mind because i prefer experimentation with form rather than rote tradition. i also fell in love with the atmospheric/ambient tone to this game; usually these are wacky/intense affairs, so Grey Cubes stands out with its understated approach.

[h1]Breakout-Klon mit Kurzweil statt Frust[/h1]
Ich mag zwar das Prinzip von Breakout, bisher hat mich aber fast jede Variante davon gestresst. Und zwar einfach weil das Gameplay bzw. die Schwierigkeit darauf aufbaut, dass es irgendwann (eher früher als später) die Reaktionsfähigkeit überfordert. In der klassischen Arcade soll man zur Niederlage gezwungen werden.
Grey Cubes allerdings macht daraus endlich mal ein modernes, weitestgehend faires Spiel, bei welchem man auch (fast) frustfrei das Ende sehen darf.
Die Grafik würde ich als minimalistisch-ästhetisch bezeichnen.
Ein paar der Spielelemente, die ich im Folgenden nennen werde, machen das Spiel fast zu einer Flippererfahrung (die Art wie der Ball sich verhält/abprallt + Multiballextra).
Leider ist der Wiederspielwert sehr gering.
[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
Wie bekannt steuert man ein Schiff am unteren Bildschirmrand und muss einen Ball hochhalten, der im oberen Bereich Blöcke entfernt. Das geht solange gut von der Hand, wie man noch genug Ziele hat. Im Original ergab sich aber bald das Problem, dass die letzten übriggebliebenen Blöcke immer schwerer zu treffen waren. Um nicht im immer gleichen Winkel zu enden und nie das letzte Ziel zu treffen, musste man den Ball mit dem Schiff “anschnippeln“ (um die Flugbahn zu verändern), was nicht immer frei von Risiko war, besonders wenn der Ball sehr schnell geworden war. Hier macht Grey Cubes genau zwei Dinge richtig bzw. besser:
1. Dass das Schiff gebogen ist, ist natürlich keine reine Ästhetik, sondern es sorgt dafür, dass man auf einfache Weise den Abprallwinkel wählen kann, ohne mit der Bewegung des Schiffs tricksen zu müssen.
2. Es lädt sich eine Magnetfunktion auf, mit der man den Ball in Richtung der Blöcke lenken kann, die er sonst passieren würde.
Es gibt die üblichen Extras zum Einsammeln. Positive, negative und „unbekannt“ (das Fragezeichen bedeutet “Überraschung“ ^^)
Positive: der Ball wird größer und hat mehr Wucht / der Ball wird 1x stark abgefeuert / der Ball hat eine leicht explosive oder elektrische Wirkung / der Ball kann gehalten werden / aus einem Ball werden zwei oder drei / das Schiff wird breiter / die Linie hinter dem Schiff wird safe und gibt 1x einen Ball zurück
Negative: der Ball tänzelt unberechenbar / der Ball wird kleiner (weniger Wirkung) / das Schiff wird kleiner
Man startet mit vier Leben (aus meiner Beobachtung können durch Extras bis zu fünf Leben angesammelt werden) und kann bis zu vier Extras parallel aktiviert haben. Sind alle Leben weg, kann man die laufende Kampagne trotzdem mit dem Einsatz von 20.000 Punkten fortsetzen. Dieses Schicksal ereilte mich zwei- oder dreimal in den höheren Levels, da war ich aber schon kurz vor den 200.000 Punkten, insofern ist genug Währung zum Weitermachen vorhanden.
Positiv erwähnen möchte ich, dass der Ball im Gegensatz zum Original in Grey Cubes nie schneller wird.
[h1]Leveldesign[/h1]
Hier liegt der Clou von Grey Cubes. Jeder Spieldurchlauf ist aus drei Gründen immer anders: die Steine verschieben sich, ein Level “lebt“ und das 3D spielt immer mehr eine Rolle. Es gibt diverse Elemente, die für Veränderung sorgen. Nicht wie behauptet alle, aber die meisten der 60 Levels bringen ihre eigene Mechanik mit bzw. unterschiedliche Kombinationen derer.
Erst einmal zu den Steinen. Die verschieben sich physikbasiert mit jedem Treffer und rutschen über das Spielfeld. Dadurch ergeben sich nicht nur neue Hindernisformationen, sondern auch neue Abprallwinkel.
Die Levels selbst unterscheiden sich natürlich erstmal dadurch, wie die Blöcke am Anfang aufgebaut sind. Manchmal werden sie auch live noch aufgebaut oder fallen ins Spielgeschehen hinein. Dann gibt es Mechaniken wie veränderliche Podeste, Randbumper, veränderliche Wände/Hindernisse oder Teleportationsstrudel. Alles was eben so die Routine über den Haufen werfen kann ^^
Und jetzt zum Einfluss des 3D. Man nimmt das erstmal eine Weile nicht so wahr, aber irgendwann merkt man, dass das Spielfeld nicht nur eine platte Draufsicht darstellt, sondern es Ebenen gibt. Spätestens wenn diese Ebenen den Ball beeinflussen, wird einem alles klar. Später heben und senken sich Teile des Spielfeldes und man muss sich an den richtigen Stellen entlanghangeln, um die Blöcke erfolgreich treffen zu können.
[h1]Spielgefühl[/h1]
Die ersten zehn, zwölf Levels sind so zugänglich, spaßig und kurzweilig, dass man denkt, hier (zu) schnell durch zu sein. Manchmal dauert ein Level etwas länger, dann kommt aber wieder ein schnelles.
Die Extras, die durch manche Blöcke freigelegt und eingesammelt werden, funktionieren sehr intuitiv (Wirkung sofort erkennbar).
Während ich anfangs noch recht entspannt das Spielgefühl genossen habe, fing es in den 40er Levels an, anspruchsvoller zu werden. Die letzten 15,16,17 Levels kosteten mich dann doch Nerven. Leider verzichtet auch Grey Cubes nicht darauf, den Spieler zu ärgern. Es wird einem teils die Sicht versperrt oder der Ball wechselt so schnell durch irgendwelche Teleporterstrudel, dass man nicht mehr schnell genug reagieren kann.
Das häufiger zitierte finale Level kann ganz schön nerven, weil man hier wenig Kontrolle über das hat, was man erreichen muss. Irgendwann ist man endlich durch und dann haben die letzten zappeligen 45min den Spielspaß doch etwas getrübt (in meinem Fall).
Alle 60 Levels hatte ich nach knapp 3h durch.
[h1]Kritik[/h1]
Neben dem gerade erwähnten, nicht mehr ganz so fairen Finaleinlauf der letzten Levels würde ich noch kritisieren, dass manchmal die Mechanik nicht so gut durchdacht ist bzw. funktioniert, wie es sein sollte. Als da wären:
1. Der Magnet hat nur einen gewissen Wendekreis. Manchmal kreist die Kugel um einen Block herum und die Wirkung war verschwendet. Unbefriedigend!
2. Die Teleportationsstrudel sind übereifrig. Hier wechselt der Ball gerne mal so schnell hin und her, dass man nur hilflos zuschaut und hofft, dass er irgendwann dort rauskommt, wo man ihn ohne übertriebene Reaktionsfähigkeiten noch abfangen kann. Ein Cooldown dieser Mechanik würde das verhindern.
3. Die aktivierbaren Wände haben teils zu breite Flächen, so dass man ständig etwas auslöst (oder etwas so gut wie eigenständig ausgelöst wird), was einen nicht weiterkommen lässt.
4. Manchmal prallt der Ball von einer kleinen Kante des Spielfeldrandes überraschend im 90°-Winkel ab und ist so gut wie im Aus, wenn man nicht direkt aufpasst.
Beim ersten Durchlauf in den oben erwähnten drei Stunden ergatterte ich 9 vollständge Achievements. Weitere 3 zählten noch zusätzliche zwei Stunden bis zur Vollständigkeit hoch (5000 Blöcke treffen, 5000 Ballberührungen, insgesamt 4h* spielen).
Die meisten der insgesamt 14 Errungenschaften hängen damit zusammen, soundso oft etwas zu treffen. Die Errungenschaft dafür, ein Level in 30 Sekunden zu vollenden, werde ich wohl nicht mehr schaffen. *Warum ich die „spiele 240min“ erst nach FÜNF Stunden bekam, kann ich mir nur damit erklären, dass das Spiel die Menüzeit & Zeit zwischen den Levels abzieht und nur die tatsächliche Spielzeit trackt.
Nach dem Ergattern der (meisten) Errungenschaften ist der Wiederspielwert leider nicht mehr gegeben. Die Levels sind nur beim ersten Durchlauf wirklich spannend, beim zweiten ist’s schon eher zäh, öde, träge. Dafür muss ich nochmal einen ganzen Punkt abziehen (sonst hätte ich 80% gegeben).
Leider gibt es nämlich nicht so etwas wie tägliche Herausforderungen mit prozedural generierten Levels, oder gar einen Workshop. Und die im Abspann erwähnten baldigen neuen Levels werden wohl nach fast zehn Jahren nicht mehr kommen ;-)
[h1]Fazit[/h1]
Insgesamt der fairste Ansatz des Breakout-Prinzips, den ich so kenne. Größtenteils locker-spaßig und insgesamt sehr kurzweilig, bietet aber bald nur noch wenig Wiederspielwert.
Leider nicht mehr im Steam Shop zu kaufen, also bei Interesse nach einem Key schauen (so hab ich’s getan). Sollte für <1€ zu haben sein.

他のブロック崩しゲームなどでは爽快感があったりするがこのゲームにあるギミックのせいでその爽快感は０に等しかった。
ブロックが筒から落ちてくるギミックは特に酷く、ボールが見えなくなり何度もミスが起こった。
ブロックを吐き出し終わったあとは画面上をウロウロしとにかく邪魔。
その他のギミックもゲームを面白くするギミックではなく単調でつまらないものになっていてとてもつらかった。
上記の件から購入はおすすめしません。

It's a modern take on Araknoid that somehow makes it feel even more bland and slow.

A very fun and unique 3d brick-breaker game. I played this game years ago on Mobile and when I found recently that it had a steam version I was overjoyed, unlike the mobile version this one feels like a real game (original mobile game had ads and annoying game mechanics that this one doesn't have).
If you haven't played grey cubes before I would absolutely recommend it, something to note though is that from what I've heard this game isn't purchasable anymore in the United States so you won't be able to buy it from the store page if you live there.
This is easily one of, if not the, best ultra-cheap game I've gotten on Steam. It's a casual and satisfying brick breaker whose difficulty is very gradual, by introducing novel elements the entire way through, keeping things interesting. By the end of it, it's like they made a masterpiece of what a brick breaker game could become. Very inventive take! It makes good use of physics and the twists they add into levels to make for some fun times. Honestly, failing a level isn't so bad because it's still fun as heck. I don't regret playing at all! It's simple, yet fantastic, and cheap! No reason to pass up.

Grey Cubes est un très bon Breakout/Arkanoid like. Le jeu est très chill et bien moins punitif que les autres jeux de ce type. L'ambiance est très froide et très "chirurgicale" de par l'excellente bande son qui nous accompagne le long de 60 niveaux tous très bien pensés.
Grey Cubes is a cool Breakout clone that adds some 3D verticality elements and physics as well. It looks like it was made with generic Unity assets, like school projects, but the game works surprisingly well without major bugs, so there’s effort involved in here.
The game has 60 levels of varying quality, with different layouts and mechanics. Some are fun to play, others are a slog at times. It has a lot of different upgrades (and downgrades) for the ball and pad that also combo well together.
Towards the end of each level, a special magnet upgrade will be periodically available to clean up the last blocks, a smart implementation that prevents wasting a lot of time.
It lasts for 2-3 hours, but for all achievements you must grind, for example by beating the game a second time. Each level has a score, but given the random nature of the upgrades, it’s mostly a matter of luck if you want high scores. And without any leaderboards, it’s not worth to focus on that.
For a single playthrough, I can recommend it, especially because the game is cheap even at full price. It may look generic, but I had fun with it.

Was gonna let this go because I'm pretty sure this was included in a bundle, so I probably paid 10 cents for it. But I'm super confused by these reviews and the final levels pissed me off enough to add my thumbs-down.
[h1]Overview[/h1]
It's a Breakout clone with 3D elements. You should already know what you're getting into.
60 levels in total which can be completed in ~1.5 hours. Not sure on total achievement completion, but I'd assume about double that.
Where Grey Cubes breaks down is in level design and speed of play.
[h1]Speed[/h1]
This game plays slow. There are a few levels where you are using a paddle at the top and bottom of the screen which adds to the perception of speed, but it's still slow unless you have a multi-ball going. The environment does [b]not[/b] help the speed of play when columns are moving up and down trapping the ball tight areas where it just bounces aimlessly.
Average bricks take about 3 hits to break, which is fine [b]if[/b] you can get bounces going. And you really can't. Could crank it up about 30%.
The game also suffers a problem that many of these games do which is not adjusting the angle at which the ball bounces off the wall. Many times the ball will end up in near horizontal motion and you have to wait for it to slowly bounce off the side walls back to you. I had to exit level 30 because the ball was bouncing between two panels infinitely.
[h1]Poor Design[/h1]
[b][u]Layouts[/u][/b]
When I think of a brick-breaker, I imagine many rows of bricks [b]*gasp*[/b], with many entry points that allow for bouncing madness. Then at the end, you have to aim for the remaining bricks. Grey Cubes doesn't offer this. In many levels, bricks lay flush with one another, or are stacked, leaving no gap to get combo bounces going. The game has exploding bricks that will scatter nearby objects, but they are underutilized. When they [i]are[/i] utilized the result is generally all of the bricks clustered along the side or scattered everywhere. Cool for physics, bad for brick-breakers.
Most levels you clear as many bricks as you can and then just wait for the magnet ability to come off cool-down to clear the final ones. Make sure you don't activate it too close to the brick, else it will just circle around it due to the turn radius.
Many of the layouts [i]aren't[/i] planned layouts at all. In fact, there are several that don't have any bricks at all upon entry and they just get dropped on the screen one by one. Or you have to hit a panel that pushes a few blocks to the floor. This isn't level design.
You'll hit a panel to release 1-3 bricks. You then do this 3 or 4 time for each panel. Where are the bricks?
[b][u]Repeat Mechanics[/u][/b]
Intro levels are nice showing off some neat mechanics, but by level 20 (out of 60) you've seen everything. Levels are repeated with a different multiple mechanics slapped on. It's not that the mechanics couldn't be used to make something interesting, they just aren't. Many have to do with bricks being pushed around by objects or columns appearing as you roll over portions of the screen.
[b][u]Levels Actively Work Against You[/u][/b]
The game doesn't want you to hit the bricks.
I don't know why.
I would like to hit the bricks.
Many rotating pieces on the screen that you have to wait for or columns extending out of the layout slowly to prevent you hitting bricks. Bricks will be locked away in different sections surrounded by walls that need to be hit first to retract the wall for a few seconds. Of course, this also activates another wall somewhere else on the screen that you will need to avoid unless you wanna lock them away again.
You'll get locked into portions of the screen where there are no bricks, desperately trying to get back to the side with the single brick. Screaming, pleading "Please, I just want to break bricks". But your cries fall on deaf ears.
They don't want you to hit bricks so badly that they have buttons [b]that make the bricks indestructible[/b]. They stay indestructible for about 5 seconds, giving you enough time to reconsider your decisions, and then inevitably hit the same exact panel again.
[b][u]Wormholes/Portals[/u][/b]
Pretty straightforward idea. Ball goes in hole, ball comes out hole. Except the holes are spaced in a way that the ball usually just bounces back and forth between them. Mix this in with the angle issue I mentioned previously, and you're basically just waiting for the ball to slowly get out of the hitbox for the portal. It's not that the [i]idea[/i] of a portal is bad, it's how they all seem so poorly placed. The levels where this idea works are the ones where the portals are moving, keeping you engaged with the motion of the ball. But the majority of their usage, they are just stationary and are is terrible locations for the layouts.
[b][u]Final Levels[/u][/b]
These are obnoxious. One is a dual-paddle level where blocks are dropping one by one on either side. What makes it a nightmare is that the "arm" dropping the blocks takes up a good 25% of the screen and is layered [b]on top of the paddles[/b] so you literally can't see the ball or paddle at times. I don't know if they thought that would be challenging or what, but it's the difficulty equivalent of sticking a fork in the eye and playing.
The final level utilizes portals and the indestructible blocks. Wouldn't be bad except the panel to toggle on the indestructible blocks [b]is the entire top half of the screen[/b]. What's worse, the bricks you need to hit are located in a way that you need to bounce the ball of the back wall and then through the portals in order to hit them. Well, if you do that, then the blocks are in an indestructible state for about 5 seconds, and the ball will generally bounce back out through the entry portal as is tradition.
Not hard, just annoying.

[*][b]Solid Music[/b] - Couldn't tell you anything about it. Which means it did arcade music exactly right. As frustrated as I got near the end, I never [i]felt[/i] frustrated, and I attribute a portion of that to the soundtrack.
[*][b]Price[/b] - Over an hour of playtime for basically free. Did I enjoy my hour? Not really, but who cares. Cheaper and more effective than my therapist.

It's not egregiously bad or anything, I'm just a bit floored by the reviews and don't think the majority of people played through all 60 levels.
This feels like a demo of a game engine rather than a fully fledged game.

A brick breaker game IMO is supposed to be relaxing but this game just pisses me off with its stupid mechanics the bricks have health so you gotta hit them multiple times to break them making tedious repeat hits and level 40 is why I'm writing this review where if you hit the big button at the top of the map the bricks become invulnerable and refill their health and its almost impossible to not hit this button
This is perhaps the only "First Unity Project" I've seen that is worth any amount of money. It looks nice, and it mixes up what is needed each stage. However, there is a major sticking point for me.
A game's point system and its skill ceiling are necessarily closely intertwined, otherwise the points don't mean anything. If the skill ceiling is too low, then the game is trivial, and anyone who spends time on the game can get a max score. If the skill ceiling is too high, then no one is going to put in the effort of getting a good score, because the best score is unachievable due to any player dying of old age long before they can get good enough.
Have you ever seen a demonstration of the chaotic nature of a double pendulum? The movement of the pendulum is so divergent that even the slightest change in position will create an entirely different result. No human, or even physical, effort could possibly allow someone the replicate a specific result. However, there is actually an even simpler example of a chaotic system.
A particle bouncing off a curved surface.
By the absolute nature of the physics of reflection, the chaos in a system increases dramatically with each addition of a curved surface. It becomes impossible to meaningfully predict where a particle will be located after a few seconds. Therefore, the skill ceiling of hitting a specific point in space with the particle with a curved surface in a space that contains other chaotic objects, like random powerups, pushable objects, and rotating objects and other curved surfaces reaches far beyond human achievement.
Regardless of how nice the game looks, by the nature of its design, there will never be a top player for this game.

벽돌들이 중력에 영향을 받거나 벽돌이 폭발하면 주변 벽돌들이 튕겨나가는 등 기존 벽돌 깨기 게임들과는 차별화된 게임성을 보여줍니다. 하지만 벽돌 깨기 게임이라는 태생적 한계때문에 오래 즐기기는 힘들었습니다.

그럼에도 불과하고 60스테이지를 깨는데 2.6시간이나 걸렸을 정도로 게임이 엄~~~~~청 루즈하다.
온갖 스테이지 기믹이 게임에 활력을 불어넣긴 커녕 게임을 루즈하게 만들려고 한다.
예를 들면 어떤 스테이지들은 벽돌이 생성되는 것을 기다리는데에만 1분 8초를 기다려야 하고
어떤 스테이지들은 공이 잘못 갇히면 컵라면 하나를 끓여오는 동안 전혀 조작을 하지 않아도
기믹속에 갇혀 죽지도 벽돌을 부수지도 못하는 상황이 생긴다.
어떤 스테이지는 건드리면 벽돌들이 굳어 아예 데미지가 안들어가는 기믹이 있는데
마지막 스테이지인 60스테이지는 아예 윗면 전체가 이 패널로 구성되어 극강의 지루함을 선사한다.
어느 부분에 쏙 하고 넣어 많은 양의 벽돌을 한번에 부수는 묘미도 없고
내가 생각지도 못한 방향으로 꺾인 덕분에 생각지도 못한 연쇄 작용이 일어나는 묘미도 없다.
그런 걸 떠나 애초에 스테이지 기믹 자체가 벽돌을 아주 천천히 깨작깨작 부술 수 있도록 짜여져있다.
게다가 애초에 게임의 특징이라고 하는 물리엔진에 기반한 요소가 매우 약해서
생각보다 벽돌이 멀리 날아가서 난장판이 되거나 하는 일도 없고
(마치 나무 구슬을 굴려 돌을 밀어내려는 느낌이 든다.)
심지어 몇몇 벽돌은 날아는 가는데 다시 제자리로 돌아오는 귀소본능까지 가지고 있어
이럴거면 도대체 그놈의 물리엔진이 무슨 소용이 있나 싶다.
게임의 디자인은 깔끔하고 그에 맞춘 OST도 잘 작곡된 느낌이지만
너무 정적이고 단조로워 게임을 어느정도 하다보면 슬슬 질리게 만드는데에 한목 거든다.
안그래도 게임 자체도 질질 끄는데 OST마저도 질질 끌리는 것이다.
아니 오히려 OST가 시끄럽고 활기찼으면 질질 끌리는 게임과 OST의 괴리로 인해 더 짜증났을지도 모르니
어쩌면 그 점은 오히려 다행인 걸지도 모르겠다.
이렇게 진행하다보면 점점 집중력을 잃게되어
분명 게임 자체의 난이도는 매우 낮은 편이고 목숨도 생각보다 퍼주는데도 불과하고 한번 두번 미스로 흘리기 시작하게 된다.
20000점을 소모해 하던 스테이지부터 이어서 목숨 5개를 받고 할 수 있긴 하지만 이렇게 되면 보너스 목숨 없이 깨는 도전과제 달성이 안돼 도전과제를 전부 달성해야만 직성이 풀리는 사람이라면 고통스러울 수 있다.
(애초에 이 게임 정상적으로 플레이하면 60라운드 전부 도는 동안 바운스 5000번 이런 도전과제의 수치가 절반정도밖에 안차있다. 결국 2회차를 해야함.)
사소한 버그로 가속패널이 가까이 있는 맵의 경우 막대기 바로 앞에서 가속패널에 튕겨져 나올 경우 막대기로 받아치지 못하고 뚫고 나가 죽은걸로 처리되는 경우가 있다.
60스테이지를 전부 깨고 나면 커밍순이라고 뜨는 걸 보아 원래 스테이지를 더 추가할 생각이 있었나보다.
잘 팔리지 않아서 더 추가가 안된건지 아님 다른 이유가 있어서 그런건진 모르겠지만
어쨌든 내가 이 게임을 실행하기 전에 스테이지 추가가 더 이뤄지지 않았어서 다행이다.
1100원밖에 안하는 게임이니 정 심심하면 사서 시간 죽이는데 사용할 순 있겠지만
개인적으론 1100원인걸 감안해도 남한테 추천할만한 게임은 아닌것 같다.
분명 게임 자체는 잘 만들긴 했지만... 완성도와는 별개로 재미가 너무 없다.
Playing this game is like waiting for the DVD logo to hit the corner but it never will. You'll wait to do anything as your ball gets stuck on level obstacles. The 3D physics is only there to make the ball unpredictable as it pushes and deflects off of them.

Très bien réalisé, c'est indéniable et la 3D est réussie Ok.
Cependant mais c'est sans doute une affaire de gout, à cause de l'atmosphère très froide (couleur et musique), le jeu manque cruellement de FUN je trouve. On s'ennuie rapidement et on se lasse vite. Certains niveaux traînent en longueur..(un comble pour ce genre de jeux). Bref Mitigé (11/20)
My mother and I both loved this game, as we enjoyed the old brick breaker and bubble popper games. This game had some fun power ups along with a few original, like the unforgettable tiny pad. My mom beat the game and I ended giving up at the last level ^_^

1.场景中的砖块不再是固定不动的，而是可以被你的攻击打乱、移动到其他位置上
2.你控制的挡板不是直的，而是弯曲的，导致你的回球角度更难控制
除此之外，通过击打砖块也是有几率调出一些特殊效果的奖励，有增益的、也有减益的（红色的）
包括增长（减少）挡板长度、使得小球带电可对附近的砖块造成伤害，等等
游戏本身价格不贵，还算是挺值得玩一下的
Dieses Brakeout-Spiel ist keines wie die Üblichen. Es ist tatsächlich eine Klasse für sich. Das kann man mit keinem anderen Game dieses Genres von den 90ern bis jetzt vergleichen (graphisch sowieso nicht, aber auch inhaltlich ist Grey Cubes weit mehr). Tolles 3D-Design (Perspektive von oben), wirklich außergewöhnlich gute Ideen, die hier in den einzelnen Levels umgesetzt wurden. Phantastisch, wie echt hier die physikalischen Einflüsse aufeinander wirken! Die verminderte Schwerkraft beim Fallen der Würfel ist hier sicher gewollt.
Die ersten Level sind noch relativ einfach, sozusagen zum Einspíelen. Später wird es dann immer kniffliger, wenn man mit zwei Paddles (unten und oben) spielt und der Ball durch zahlreiche Wurmlöcher teleportiert wird. Hier ist verdammt schnelle Reaktion gefragt. In den letzten zehn Levels musste ich schon des öfteren um 20.000 Punkte fünf neue Bälle kaufen, um überhaupt bis zum letzten Level spielen zu können.
Alles in allem ist das Game jedoch nicht zu schwer, so dass man sich auch über die schwierigsten Levels hinwegspielen kann, ohne daran verzweifeln zu müssen :). Aber knifflig genug, um den Spielspaß aufrecht zu erhalten!
Da hier wirklich tolle Ideen von sich dauernd bewegenden Schiebern, Barrieren, Ebenen, Teleportern und anderen wirklich nett anzusehenden Dingen toll umgesetzt wurden, macht es sicherlich Spaß, die 60 Levels immer wieder durchzuspielen - mit dem Anreiz, die Punktezahlen zu verbessern.
Und nicht zuletzt: der Sound! Passt erstklassig zur Atmosphäre des Spiels.
Fazit: an alle Freunde dieses Game-Genres: greift nach Grey Cubes! Da braucht ihr wegen des einen Euro nicht länger zu überlegen!

NOTA PER GLI ACHIEVEMENTS: per sbloccarli dovrete uscire dal gioco (chiudere l'applicazione) poichè, presumo a causa di un bug, non vengono registrati in tempo reale. Inoltre, se sbloccate più di un achievement in un unica sessione di gioco, verranno sbloccati (quelli che avete preso) e registrati alla stessa ora in cui chiuderete l'applicazione.
Non ho tantissimi giochi su Steam, ma tra quelli che ho provato Grey Cubes è l'unico che ha presentato questo problema.
Per i nostalgici di Arkanoid e simili.

The 3d element is quite alrigth, it misses the point on large level as the camera is a bit weird in mouvements.
And sometimes you have tubes from the ceilings who drop the tiles on the floor that block the view.
Completed the 60levels, but achievments tell me I did only 40, weird ^^.
Anyways a casual game that is ok.
Когда-то мне очень нравился один арканоид с Алавара, что-то в его названии что-то связанное с ядерным оружием... В нём было много анимаций, и выглядел он шикарно. Так вот, Grey Cubes — это больше чем куча анимаций, разработчики сделали из арканоида экшен с физикой, телепортацией, кнопками... Ближе к последним уровням игра исправно надоедает, и расставаться с ней уже не печально. Но поиграть явно стоит =)

Let me talk to you about a game called Grey Cubes. I can tell I've lost you there already. I can hear your thoughts, I had them too and they go something like this:
GREY? Isn't that like the least of all the colours? Is grey even a colour? Is it a shade? If it is, it's like the beige of shades. Lifeless, soulless, drab.
CUBES? Well what's fun about those? I guess maybe a Rubik's Cube is kinda fun if you're stuck in the eighties with no means of escape. Otherwise cubes aren't renowned for their entertainment factor.
GREY CUBES? I'm with you, it's a terrible name. I mean there are grey cubes in it sure, but really it doesn't help to sell the idea of the game.
HYPER MIND FUC< PSYCHO BALL BLAST. That's what I'd have called it. That's what the kids need to hear nowadays. Something edgy and possibly dangerous. For the remainder of this review I shall be referring to the game as HMFPBB.
So what is HMFPBB? Well it takes the decades old phenomenon of brick breaking games such as Breakout and Arkanoid and trails them kicking and screaming into the 21st century and possibly beyond.
Gone is the one dimensional vertical gameplay of yore; in is the pinball infused power up laden omni-dimensional strategy puzzle wonder of the modern age.
From the outset you will be pleased by the minimalist aesthetic. Blacks, whites, greys, blues and reds are the range of the palette and it is quite striking. Everything has a nice sci-fi glow and it's very easy to see the action unfold. It's brick breaking inside Tron 2.0.
The music is a kind of minimal ambient electro which is perfectly pleasant and in fact I rather vibed on it.
I initially tried to play with a controller but found it to be overly sensitive and sometimes resulted in a slight over movement of the paddle. I then switched to using the mouse and this is just as smooth and responsive as you could want. As the old saying goes "For precision brick breaking, real champions use the mouse".
Gameplay is surprisingly varied for a game that involves hitting a ball into (grey cubes) bricks.
From the outset right to the very last level (60 in total) there are new mechanics and ideas constantly mixing things up. A secondary paddle on the far side of the playing field, rotating barriers, portals, moving floors, walls which increase the speed of the ball are just a few of the many variations which prevent the game from ever becoming dull.
Then there are the power ups (and downs) which can dramatically change your chances of success. These are thrown out at a fairly regular rate and again add a nice layer of variety.
The pinball influences are shown on multi level stages. Sometimes the floor of the playing field will rise and fall, suddenly pushing the game into a third dimension. This is always done very well. At other times, you will have to activate machinery in order to place the cubes onto an otherwise empty playing field, like activating the features on a pinball table. Then there's the score multiplier. As long as your ball is hitting the cubes, the multiplier is going up and high score chasers will enjoy trying to outdo themselves on previous levels.
The game begins fairly sedate but within a very short time it becomes a frantic juggling act testing reflexes and concentration. The difficulty level is never insurmountable and even if you do lose all your balls (ha ha) the game is fairly forgiving and exchanges some points for a new set. Oh yeah and there's a magnet which charges after a while, because you know, magnets.
So all in all HMFPBB is a great version of a classic and definitely worthy of some more attention than a game called Grey Cubes will ever likely receive.

*Bat and Ball Out of H£LL.
*ULTIMATE BRICK.
*Smashy Cubes.
*Anything.
It's the best version of Arkanoid I've seen yet, by a large margin... but it's also, y'know, Arkanoid. We are well past the point in game development where Arkanoid can still be considered a fun game.

お目当てのゲームを購入後、ウォレットが中途半端に余ってたので購入してみた。
紹介動画の見たまんまのブロックくずしゲームです。物理演算でブロックが移動したり上から崩れてきたりします
ステージが進むとワープや移動する壁、せり上がる床、など厄介な妨害が増えてきますが難易度はそれほど高く無いので
詰む事なく最後までいけると思います。
Old game but don't look at the release date. It is a solid paddle and ball game with an emphasis on levels with different mechanisms that forces the player to figure out the best way to move forward. 60 levels are available which will pose some challenge. Especially if you are going for a perfect game.
The store trailer actually shows pretty well how the gameplay works. A good purchase considering it's low-low price of 0.99€
Grey Cubes is another arkanoid/breakout clone, this one features some bricks stacked on other bricks.
While the 3D aspect of the game is interesting, it ultimately doesn't add much to the formula as the ball still bounces around on a 2D plane. 3D clones of arkanoid have been around for decades and never really caught on. Added bonus, the developers don't know about gaming peripherals like HOTAS, racing wheels etc, so they bind these as if they're console peasant gamepads, rendering the game unplayable. Can't recommend this game as it may not work for many PC gamers because the developers didn't bother with controls customisation.
Entertaining somewhat original Breakout game. I don't like much the grey aesthetics but its fine. My only complain was the last 4-5 levels that were atrociously annoying because some columns obstruct the camera, not the ball's path. Good to kill some time if can get it with a discount.
This game is great to play when you just want to take a break and relax cause its simple easy and fun.
I dislike the fact theres no local save file cause i had like 80 % of the game and had to start all over again.

It's a mobile port, but that's not to say it's bad.
It's a Breakout clone (it reminded me of Alleyway, a Gameboy game I had back in the day) with just about different upgrades and things going on to make it it's own simple, yet fun game.
It's fine if you're into arcade games with a chill atmosphere.
I can recommend it since it's cheap, casual and functional enough that it will make you feel you didn't just waste $1.

The purest form of arkanoid combines randomness of ricocheting balls with the player's ability to bounce the ball at specific angles and utilizing the power-ups.
Now, adding more random ̶s̶h̶i̶t̶ poo to the equation makes the player less in control, and the "game" becomes straight up annoying. I deliberately put the word 'game' in quotation marks, because at certain point it stops being a game, and becomes a thing of "release the ball and wait for it to break the bricks."

An awesome take on the old-school Arkanoid clones. Who would've thought that realistic physics would improve a game that's been around about as long as pac-man? It takes skill to master, but with sixty levels, each with it's own kind of challenges, I definitely approve of it. I only wish they would have held up their promise of more levels to come in future updates. Seriously, does this studio still exist?

so i think on level 59 there is a bug where when you go through the portals very fast, you may die/lose your ball. this happened to me like 3 times and i couldnt figure out why i was dying. Overall great games, please add more levels (since you said you would at the end of the game) and add an option to adjust volume level, not just on or off
Ugly Arkanoid. Feels like a science fair nightmare of boredom, or a Picasso game. I tried to like it, just didn't.
It is not a giant. But it's a good and honest game.

Grey Cubes is a modern take on the classic Breakout Game.
It adds lots of powerups and unique mechanics, blackholes, staircases, conveyor belts.
The levels are well thought out, I enjoyed most of the levels except the one's where you have to defend both top and bottom, but that might just be personal taste, it just makes the game impossibly hard. Luckily they are spaced apart in general and the dev is very generous with continues, only decreasing your score to get more lives.
Personally I feel the strongest point of the game is that it excels at adding 3D features to a 2D game, Cubes move, rotate, and fall over when they get hit and the physics are well done.

What to say about Grey Cubes...
My overall positive impression stems partly from my childhood Arkanoid days, partly from the fresh approach to the genre and the very fair pricing at €1. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 12 levels as a nice passtime and skill-based challenge. Then the first invisible blocks (rotating around a visible one) entered the game.
While you can (quite rightfully) argue this is still skill-based, it starts to become a bit of a hassle and introduces some hectic elements into an otherwise enjoyable and relaxing experience so far. However, with some imagination and a good memory you can guess the remaining blocks. And you will learn to love the magnet feature that will home in on remaining blocks, visible or not.
Looking back, this was still an easy and enjoyable level. Heck, all the levels can be finished even by an old geezer as myself (it took me about 3 hours to finish all 60 levels). But the further you proceed, the more little annoyances and grievances start to surface.
My major complaints:
- Some obstacles are hard to make out in some areas (very light blue on light blue simply doesn't stand out visually and you may be surprised quite a few times when the ball suddenly bounces right back and out of bounds).
- Later on the tubes dropping cubes (cool idea, by the way) remain on the playing field for no other purpose than to block your sight, often blocking both ball and paddle if at an unconvenient angle, thus leaving you to guess whether you will make contact or not - especially if you have some cubes or obstacles in that area as well.
- The "whirlwind teleports", moving around at the most inconvenient times and patterns or being placed statically in positions that trigger a nigh endless loop.
There were some other minor annoyances, but all of that can be attributed to personal preference. I imagine some people don't mind some randomness or some "tough-luck" situations and see that as a way to increase difficulty in a game. I sometimes felt left to the will of the game (not quite often enough to make me quit, though) instead of failing because of slow reactions or making mental errors. Personally, I don't mind increased difficulty, but I do mind being helpless in a given situation.
As for the devs message at the end of the game, mentioning more levels to come... since I can't see any updates for this game since its release in 2015, I would take that with a pinch of salt.
Another thing that may annoy people: The achievements seem to be broken for many players, including myself. As of the time of this review, I didn't get any of the achievements (not even the one you should theoretically get for playing more than 5 minutes...).
With all this in mind, I would still recommend the game. It was mostly fun (induced with some short bursts of frustration) and for 99 cents you can hardly go wrong if you are looking for a little distraction. Just don't expect too much.

Verdikt: Môže byť už nespočetnekrát recyklovaný koncept hry zábavný a inovatívny. Hra Grey Cubes v sebe nesie kladnú odpoveď. Jedná sa o modernú verziu ničiteľa rôznych blokov kociek a ďalších geometrických útvarov. Náročnosť jednotlivých úrovní sa postupne zvyšuje aj vďaka statickým alebo pohyblivým prekážkam. Vplyv na úspešné zvládnutie úrovne majú power-upy, ktoré buď pomôžu alebo naopak priťažia hráčovi. Grafická stránka hry je utilitárna, teda zameraná na účel. Ten si plní celkom obstojne, no pre viaceré dizajnérske rozhodnutia sa niektoré úrovne stávajú peklom, kedy si podáva ruky rýchlosť a splývanie predmetov pre ich farbu. Treba však uznať, že sa tak cibria reakcie hráča. Grey Cubes v sebe ukrýva päťdesiat odtieňov zábavy za atraktívnu cenu.

SImple and nice cube breaking game.
Pros: Good controls, good challenges and nice ideas. Particularly involving some height dimension in some of the levels (as if you were watching the board from above).
Cons: If you're an achievement fan you'll need to replay levels to get them all. One of the tricks involves some "pillars" that place cubes on the board and obstruct your vision in the process. I didn't like those levels but they're only a few.
The first proper games I played as a small child were Tetris and Arkanoid on ZX Spectrum 48K, the 80s British home computer that used audio cassettes to load games (it took like half a hour to load a game).
Needless to say, I have a certain soft spot for "Brickout clones", and thisone here is pretty good and costs just a buck.
It's casual-friendly, but can get tricky in the later stages.
The game is a mobile port but it does the job.
[b]WARNING: This game is unplayable on Linux if you have two monitors.[/b] The game starts in a weird mode where its resolution seems to be the combined resolution of your monitors but the game window is only one monitor in size (in my case 1920x1080). So the game window content is stretched and you can only see the left half of the menu where none of the text in the menu buttons is visible. Thankfully the Exit button is located in the left bottom corner so you can at least exit the game gracefully.
One would expect you could work around a problem like this by editing the config file manually, but nope. While the config file is editable and you can change the resolution to whatever you want, for some indiscernible reason the game overwrites the config file at launch and starts at that completely wrong resolution no matter what you do. To add insult to injury the game also starts on the wrong monitor; my primary monitor is the right one and the game starts on the left.
The developers [url=https://steamcommunity.com/app/371500/discussions/0/615086038687243641/]were made aware of the issue[/url] by multiple people less than a month after the game launched (and many since then) and 3 years later have done nothing to address the problem.
TL;DR: Unless you're willing to disable your second monitor just to play this game (which will completely mess up your window setup in every single workspace you're using), you can't play this game.
