Brings me back to the time I got the physical copy from OfficeMax.
This game reminds me a lot of CivCity Rome, I love the graphics too. Mostly building a functioning city with the mix of combat too. Really like that they added naval warfare boats that can transport troops to seperate islands on the map so you can get to resources like mines. Definitely recommend to anyone like a city builder simulator with a roman theme.
Majestic streets, bustling markets, each day feels like a festival of ancient jokes. Bright graphics, a plot that keeps me on edge until I can’t stop laughing!

Un caesar-like efficace.
La réalisation globale (graphismes,son,ergonomie,IA...) est bonne. Pas de gros défauts selon moi sur aucuns points.
La partie construction/développement est centrale et très réussie avec beaucoup de bâtiments dont chacun a un rôle précis (production/loisir/religion/administration...). C'est un plaisir de voir sa ville grandir et de planifier l'urbanisation en fonction de la localisation des ressources et de l'aire d'influence des bâtiments .
La partie gestion quand à elle est simplifiée. Tant mieux ou tant pis. Les habitations n'évoluent pas de façon dynamique en fonction des biens et services proposés donc pas de catastrophes démographiques à prévoir. Mon plus grand regret: la partie production/logistique/commerce également très réduite. On est quasiment limité à la production de matières premières. Très peu d'ateliers de valorisation à des fins commerciales. Une fois votre ville bâtie vous n'aurez quasiment plus de problèmes d'urbanisme. Pas de pénuries de ressources car pas d'épuisement des filons/terres agricoles. Bien sur si vous vous faites attaquer et que vos bâtiments important sont détruit c'est toute votre économie qui s'écroule comme dans n'importe quel jeu mais Les adversaire IA ne sont pas féroces et le multi est mort donc vous n'aurez pas d'adversité de ce côté là.
La partie militaire justement est assez développée avec moultes bâtiments et unités. Les combats contre L'IA dont je parlais pus haut sont cependant une formalité. Pas de challenge, rien à voir avec AOE. Ce n'est pas un problème car il y a d'autres jeux pour ça.
I mean, it's not a new game, but it will play on anything, the graphics still hold up, at least for the buildings, and it's still fun.

The game is fun and very hard. I like how hard it is to be able to complete the missions. It makes it competitive and allows me to grow as an engineer
Not a bad game, until you've experienced the random burning down of your outpost... which is the reason I give it a thumbs down.
In this game, you are given an outpost from which you start building everything. I spent hours building everything from citizen housing, to entertainment, goods and even a forum. Everyone was happy. My approval rating was outstanding. I was making money and gearing up to attack the enemy.
The by random chance, my outpost starts on fire. I've played a lot of Rome games where this is an issue of course, but usually there are structures you can build to prevent fire, or put out fires. In this game, the only way to put out a fire is to demolish your building before it spreads. Now imagine imagine your outpost is on fire and when your outpost is gone, that's it. Game over. No saves, no alternatives, nothing. Just done.
Well, that means I'm done. This game mechanic is so inherently flawed it feels like a bug and getting an immediate game uninstall. By the time you run across this flaw, you'd have spent too much time to get a refund. Glad I didn't pay much for it.

It's very similar to the ANNO saga, but with better ideas.
- Building cities and its resource chains, which without proper supervision can lead to the collapse of all your cities.
- The ability to have multiple cities and specialize them in capturing one or more resources.
- The battles and city destruction are nice additions, but not its strong suit.
- The campaigns are very entertaining and follow the history of Rome.
I recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
If you like city builders you'll like this.

I was curious to try Grand Ages: Rome, so I entered a contest to win a code for it. To my surprised, I won the contest! But, the game experience was a complete disaster from the start. The game consistently lagged and froze every few minutes, making it practically unplayable. What’s even more frustrating is that this isn’t some modern, hardware intensive release, it’s a game that’s over 15 years old.
I’m running it on a laptop with an NVIDIA RTX 3050 GPU, which can handle far more demanding titles with ease, yet somehow this game brought my entire system to a standstill. It didn’t just crash the game, it froze everything. I couldn’t even open task manager to force quit it. Steam became unresponsive, and I was left with no choice but to do a hard restart on my laptop just to escape the frozen screen. It’s baffling that a game this old could cause such instability. I can't comment on the gameplay itself, because I didn’t get far enough to experience it properly since the performance issues made sure of that.
I think this game seems to be completely abandoned. There haven’t been updates or fixes in years, and no signs that the developers plan to address the serious compatibility issues on modern hardware. It’s really disappointing, because if you're gonna leave it on steam for people to purchase, you should at least make sure it actually worked.
With that said, I can't recommend this game at all... Unless you're running a setup from the game's original release era or feel like troubleshooting just to get a glimpse of gameplay. It's broken, outdated, and unsupported, avoid it!
[h2]Perhaps the best Roman city-builder one can play today[/h2]
The "Roman" here is not a figure of speech, nor is it merely a decoration chosen for an otherwise generic builder. In addition to welcome yet ultimately expected things like temples and aqueducts we have 4 population classes with their own needs and quirks - patricians, equites, plebes and, notably, slaves - with the latter being more of a commodity. We have two campaigns that let us meet notable figures of Roman history and work for them - and sometimes against them (with some unique missions based on your choices). All of it, including the soundtrack, does the job to create the appropriate atmopshere and immerse you into what happens on screen.
Great customization and progression is something this game shares with Haemimont's Tropico 4 that came out a few years afterwards. You get to pick your character's name, portrait and one of the 5 families - each coming with its own set of perks to unlock and each representing a particular side of Roman fantasy. You may start at level 1 and slowly work your way up, getting a single skill point to spend per mission completed. Or, you may start as a level 25 character and get your perks right away - which I honestly recommend doing. There are 3 perk trees to invest into - City and Military which are the same for every character, and the Family branch, specific to your family. You get about 36 perks to choose from, meaning there is build crafting and some tough choices involved, since you won't be able to just grab all the best perks - they only become available after investing a certain number of points in the tree.
There is also a secondary progression system called estates. You unlock new estates to buy and the money to buy them by completing side objectives during missions, and estates allow you to start a mission with a surplus of certain resources - ranging from money and research points to slaves or building materials. Another reason to start as a level 25 character is it makes every estate purchaseable from the get go, as opposed to forcing you to play in a certain way to complete side objectives, that can sometimes not align with your family's preferred playstyle. Speaking of families, the guide you might stumble upon here on Steam considers slavers Lucii and traders Valerii to be most powerful, however I personally swear by the scholarly Flavii - leading to the point that most families appear pretty balanced and fun to play, with different builds available even with a single family, contributing to the game's overall replayability.
As for the gameplay itself, this game's approach to it is pretty unorthodox for the time and can be considered a war crime by an old Caesar 3 veteran. You see, there is no simulation of individual citizens here, there are no "walkers". There is no need to watch haulers carrying your goods to warehouses... heck, there are no warehouses in this game to begin with. And the thing is... it works nonetheless. Instead of resource logistics the primary city-building challenge here comes from layout planning. You see, every building has a radius it affects and where it draws workforce from. Leading to a reality where any production building needs people living nearby. Those people need food, religion and entertainment. And, before you know it, you'll have small towns forming organically around farmable land or stone quarries. It's a satisfying gameplay loop that just makes sense. Or if you don't want to build an entire town for the sake of a single quarry, you can build a slave market instead, that's going to serve all hard labor jobs in its proximity, as opposed to a regular "1 house - 1 workplace" rule.
A seemingly oversimplified city-builder, it's actually surprisingly deep and comes with challenges for you to solve, with bonuses and penalties being applied based on how you play. Went all-in on food quality? Your low-tier housing is now free to build. Your city mostly consists of equites and patricians, while your hard labor is carried out by slaves? You get the "city of nobles" modifier that doubles your taxation income. Ignored fountains and herbalist shacks? Congratulations, a plague. Once again, every family encourages its own approach to urban layout. For example, as Flavii you want to have a beautiful city with lots of gardens and plazas, meanwhile Julii thrives when you cram as many insulas next to each other as possible.
And then there's combat. It ain't Total War, yet fairly impressive for a city-builder. You have morale, training, unit abilities, not to mention many, many unit types including Roman legions, gladiators, gaul berserkers, war elephants and everything in between. Combat is an important part of the game - while there are purely economic missions, there are many hybrid and even purely military ones. This serves as another aspect of your build as it makes you plan for how you're gonna handle the inevitable combat segments of the game. Lucii will flood the enemies with multiple squads of cheap light infantry, Flavii will call upon an elite squad of Praetorians, meanwhile Valerii are just gonna bribe enemies to make them go home - a neat trick if you'd like to skip most fights the game has to offer.
Back in the day it was regarded as visually stunning, so I gotta admit that for a 15 years old game it still holds up - to the point it's probably going to be prettier than most recent "labor of love" games half a decade in the making by a single indie dev. It still works like a charm on Win 10 and is surprisingly stable, to the point you can just buy, install and have fun - more than can be said for many old games!
Are there flaws? Of course. Some descriptions of how buildings work are inaccurate - for example, you'll read that artisan market makes goods out of clothes and olive oil, while in reality it only uses the latter. There are several mistakes like that, and they might be a result of balance changes by the Reign of Augustus expansion. Other than that, the gameplay can get repetitive, as after you've figured out your build you just repeat the same actions again and again every mission. This can be remedied by playing multiple characters in parallel, leaning into different playstyles.
Overall, while Haemimont Games' titles tend to be hit or miss, Grand Ages: Rome was definitely a hit. I don't find myself recommending games very often, but the truth of the matter is this is perhaps the best Roman city-builder one can play today.
A classic city builder I can just enjoy when I want to relax and craft a city.

Grand Ages: Rome is a city builder with RTS-elements. You have to provide your population with food, religion and entertainment. Scarcity will increase crime rate, lead to upsprings and your population will leave your city or start burning down your buildings. If your city is well managed, you can build up your military and invade other settlements or defend your own city from them.

오래된 RTS 게임을 지금 하려니 적응이 힘들긴 하지만 재미있게 할 수 있습니다.
농장을 좀 빨리 짓고 싶은데 허허벌판까지 건물을 지을 수도 없고...
건물 거리 적용도 그렇고 수도관도 그렇게 막 엄청나게 딱딱 지어지고 그런 느낌은 아닙니다..
도시 건설을 좀 더 잘 하시는 분들에겐 유리하겠지만 이걸로 도시건설 입문하실..분은 없겠지만 그렇게 추천드리진 않습니다.
옛날 게임 특유의 잘 만듦새에 전 따봉입니다.

El juego en un principio parece atractivo, pero el tema de los incendios que se desatan cada dos por tres acaba siendo desesperante... No hay más que ver que Internet está lleno de foros preguntando por cómo evitar los incendios en este juego, por algo será. Llega a ser un problema, más cuando tampoco tienes gráficas ni indicadores claros sobre la gestión de la ciudad que te indiquen la causa, y especialmente si tenemos en cuenta que ya puedes haber construido la mismísima copia de Roma... Si tu Fundus sufre un incendio y se destruye, pierdes la partida y tienes que empezar de cero. Yo he jugado en paralelo a este y al Imperium Romanum Gold, y aunque este último gráficamente es inferior, a nivel de jugabilidad le da mil vueltas al Grand Ages: Rome, y yo diría que incluso es más realista.
Y es que parece que los desarrolladores de Grand Ages: Rome (o Imperium Civitas 3) se centraron demasiado en el tema gráfico y menos en hacer un juego realista y adictivo; básicamente colocas tu insula, y ahí se queda, ni evoluciona ni nada... En el Imperium Romanum Gold por lo menos las casas y sus ocupantes pueden ir mejorando o empeorando, y es un juego super adictivo que te quita el sueño y en el que echas horas y horas y ni te enteras; aquí, no veo eso, lo siento. En fin, lo he acabado desinstalando después de dos partidas perdidas por los dichosos incendios, y me quedo con el Imperium Romanum.
This game is great! I received this game years ago when it was released, on CD, so I have way more hours played.
This is one of the best city-builders I've played. It's challenging and rewarding. I enjoy the city-building aspect more than the real-time strategy aspect, but the military campaigns are still a ton of fun. I love how your character progresses through the campaigns by purchasing estates and unlocking new talents. The free-build is also extremely satisfying, even without the challenge the campaigns give you.

Мне понравилось реалистичность и динамичность. Что не понравилось, так это малый размер карт и местами баги (корабли могут плыть по суше и здания надвисать в воздухе). А так игра интересная, но уже не соответствует современным требованиям градостроительных симуляторов, так как устарела! Однако в силу очень малого количества игр на данную тему, эта игра оставляет малую отдушину любителям античности
Really fun city-builder. Military leaves a bit to be desired, but there are a lot of other titles that cover that base.
Grand Ages Rome ist für mich vom strategischen Teil her eher lasch, da es fast unmöglich ist, die Aufgaben nicht zu erfüllen. Dafür ist die Story um so besser und der Spielspaß rührt daher, dass es schön aufgemacht ist und man einen "kleinen Ausflug in die Anfänge der Zivilisation" erhält. Ich persönlich habe die Standard-Kampagne durchgespielt und werde mich nun an die Erweiterung machen.
Noch ein Hinweis zu einem Bug: Das Spiel ist mittlerweile 13 Jahre alt und weigert sich, mehr als 1 Speicherstand zu speichern. Der Kompatibilitätsmodus bringt in allen Variationen leider nichts, also schaltet man in den Optionen "Automatisch speichern" aus, da es sonst nicht möglich ist, eine Mission durchzuspielen.

angenehm, etwas schwieriger als der Vorgänger Imperium Romanum aber dadurch auch eine kleine Steigerung im Spiel. Gibt jetzt die Möglichkeit Fähigkeiten auszuwählen und Technologie zu erforschen was dem Spiel etwas mehr Tiefe gibt. Schöne Grafik und läuft flüssig. Zu empfehlen.

Tbh I don't even remember when or how I picked this up, must have gotten it on sale at some point, then later discovered it again in my library and decided to give it a try.
The UI is a bit clunky at times, building streets can be fiddly and the tutorial is a bit basic and doesn't necessarily do a great job of explaining which buildings you want at the start to stop your people from getting unhappy.
But boy, oh boy, is this a hidden gem.
The mechanics might require some getting used to with how you need to cluster, but other than that building placement and freedom exceeds a lot of games that are 10-15 years newer and had way more budget, graphics are really solid for its age and you can still build some amazing looking cities.
If you are looking for min-maxing and super complicated production chains there might be better titles, but if you want to build a cool looking Roman city, this is the best game I know.
Great atmosphere and, surprisingly, really good music as well, even if I wish there were more different tracks.

Esta muy bueno. Su temática de juego es algo complicada a comparacion de otros títulos de estrategia, aquí se fusiona una temática de juego sobre gestión de ciudades y estrategia. Basado en la cultura romana y el largo de su expansión, esto lleva a que en ciertos mapas tengas que buscar los lugares con recurso estratégicos indispensables y por consiguiente defenderte de ataques.
En simples palabras, la colocación de los edificios hará que logres los objetivos o en el otro caso reiniciar la partida. Las campañas son variadas, puede que después de dedicarle algunas horas lo encuentres repetitivo es algo que a mi consideración me pasa después de jugar títulos de construcción de ciudades. Cabe resaltar que este juego ya tiene sus años encima.
Una opción bastante buena para jugadores que les gusten los juegos de estrategia o construcción de ciudades.
